Success Story

Laid Off After 15 Years, Military Veteran Keeps Family Afloat with Help from United Way Ken Lysiak isn’t the type of man who finds it easy to ask for help. A 59-year-old military veteran and resident of Ocoee, Ken worked hard to support his family by driving a truck for a large transportation company. But when the economy went south and the company faltered, he lost his job after 15 years of service.

Ken knew he needed to find another job fast. Though his own children were grown, he and his wife, Karla, are raising their grandchildren, ages 15 and 5. Despite his willingness to do most any job, Ken could not find work.

With bills piling up and two months behind on his rent, he called United Way 2-1-1 after hearing about a federal program that United Way was administering to help people avoid or recover from homelessness. Not only did he qualify for immediate rental assistance, United Way case managers helped him in other important ways.

When you support United Way, you support our work to help thousands of people like Ken and his family who are struggling in these difficult times to pay for housing, utilities and other basic needs.

“After entering the program, I learned how to consolidate bills, lower my truck payment and create a workable budget,” Ken said. “United Way also guided me to a wider range of options for improving my job skills and finding new employment.”

Thanks to job retraining, Ken is now working full-time as a quality control technician and he and his family are back on their feet. “I would like to thank United Way for all their help,” he said. “Without it, I don’t know where I’d be today.”

If the events of the past few years have taught us anything, they’ve highlighted how quickly even the most carefully planned lives can unravel. We’ve also seen that tremendous things are accomplished when compassionate, like-minded people come together to help neighbors in need.

2010-11 Campaign Summary & Message from Chair

Thanks to outstanding leadership and generosity in a time of community crisis, United Way’s 2010-11 campaign succeeded in raising millions of dollars to help Central Floridians in need.

Led by Sandy Hostetter, President of CNLBank, the campaign’s successful conclusion was celebrated in April when it was announced that United Way’s total projected resources for 2010-11 reached $27.3 million, including $17,417,112 raised by the workplace campaign.

Leadership Investors, totaling 2,248 were a critical component of this success, donating a combined total of $3,461,021.

In all, more than 500 companies participated in the campaign, which provides critical support to nearly 100 programs operated by such well-known agencies as Coalition for the Homeless, The Salvation Army, Boys & Girls Clubs, Seniors First and dozens of others that are doing life-changing work in our community.

Among the campaign’s top 10 corporate supporters were three companies that consistently belong to the Million Dollar Club: Walt Disney Company - $3,354,920 Publix Super Markets, Inc. - $2,588,772 Lockheed Martin, Inc. - $1,176,303 Other generous companies in the top-10 donor list included Darden Restaurants, Inc., City of Orlando, Tupperware Brands Corporation, Orange County Government, Wells Fargo Financial, SunTrust Bank and Fifth Third Bank.

It was a tremendous honor – and learning experience − to chair United Way’s 2010-11 Community Campaign. As a longtime local banker and former CEO of an affordable housing lending consortium, I believed I was wellversed in community need; but I learned through United Way that today’s challenges are profoundly different.

The economic crisis of the past three years has rocked our community to the core. Thousands of hardworking people, including many of our coworkers, neighbors and friends, have lost their jobs, their savings, their homes and everything they’ve worked a lifetime to achieve.

Fortunately − thanks to you and so many others − United Way and our partner agencies have been there to help. As campaign chair, I had the opportunity to meet many people who’d been helped through United Way support. It was a moving experience to see their tears and to experience the embrace of someone who said, “Thank you. I don’t know where I’d be today without United Way.” I want to tell you that their “thank you” was meant for you.

As a longtime resident of Central Florida and a Leadership Investor myself, I also want to express my heartfelt gratitude. Your leadership and generosity have made a tremendous difference for so many local children, families and seniors in need.

You stand tall as a shining example of what makes our community great.

Investing In Results

Focusing Work & Resources INVESTING IN RESULTS Heart of Florida United Way (HFUW) is moving in a bold direction focused on prevention, known as Investing in Results. It’s a strategic approach designed to address the root causes of problems that impact people’s lives and send ripple effects across our entire community.

We know that even with great work by HFUW and our agency partners – as well as tremendous generosity from our community – health and human service problems have continued to grow and compound. Not only is prevention the right thing to do for people, it also makes smart economic sense. Research shows that for every dollar spent on prevention, a minimum of $7 is saved on intervention.

In seeking long-term solutions to our community’s most pressing problems, our areas of focus include: • Building Safe Communities through Education • Improving Financial Stability • Developing Healthy Children and Families • Alleviating Hunger and Homelessness Community Problems Require Community Solutions United Way is in a unique position to lead the community in creating new prevention-based solutions. But HFUW and our partner agencies can’t do this work alone. To move the needle, we need all segments of the community working together.

Making progress on complex issues will require steady, sustained focus over the next several years. Guided by community volunteers, United Way will measure results and report back to the community every step of the way.

Dividing the Dollars Heart of Florida United Way was responsible for raising, managing and distributing $27.3 million throughout Central Florida in fiscal year 2010-11.

Known as “total resources,” these include all dollars raised through the workplace giving campaign, leadership giving, special events and other donor-related activities.

It also includes federal grants such as Ryan White Part B for HIV/AIDS care; the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing Program (HPRP); and the Emergency Assistance Fund. HFUW also solicits and administers several state and private foundation grants such as one for crisis counseling services provided by United Way 2-1-1, which is funded by the Florida Department of Children and Families.

These, combined with other programs, services and resources, make Heart of Florida United Way the region’s largest funder of local health and human service programs.

With your help, United Way touched the lives of more than 323,400 people last year. From children to seniors, to those recovering from job loss or a family health crisis, United Way supported programs help people at every stage of life.

By percentages, funding for organizations with programs providing services across the Investing in Results focus areas are as follows: Building Safe Communities through Education — 21 percent Improving Financial Stability — 16 percent Developing Healthy Children and Families — 35 percent Alleviating Hunger and Homelessness — 28 percent 8

United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society (ADT) recognizes the generosity of individuals contributing at the highest levels of personal giving. Donating gifts of $10,000 or more annually, these caring philanthropists demonstrate a profound commitment to helping those in need.

The society is named after the young French aristocrat who wrote admiringly of the American effort to promote the common good.

In all, more than 700 women, representing all walks of life, invest their time, talent and treasure to help improve the lives of our area’s most vulnerable residents.

Throughout the year, the council sponsors many meaningful volunteer and fundraising events that support United Way’s focus on helping families improve their financial stability.

The Year in Review

CAMPAIGN KICK OFF Central Florida’s top companies and business leaders came together to help kick off United Way’s 2010-11 Campaign, chaired by Sandy Hostetter, President of CNLBank. Millions of dollars were raised to help local residents who are struggling to survive difficult economic times.

UNITED WAY DAYS OF CARING More than 1,700 corporate volunteers took part in United Way Days of Caring, the region’s largest community-wide volunteer event. Lockheed Martin led the way with nearly 900 employees participating. Publix, Disney, Coca-Cola, Fifth Third Bank and many other companies also took part.

19TH ANNUAL CHEF’S GALA Tantalizing food from 20-plus top chefs, fine wine, and tremendous support from WALT DISNEY WORLD® Resort and other sponsors combined to make Chef ’s Gala another delicious success. A full 95% of dollars raised went to support local nonprofits.

LIVE UNITED CELEBRATION Honoring the generous spirit of our community, the LIVE UNITED event celebrated the end of a successful fundraising campaign and the 500-plus companies who supported it. Lauren Rowe, news anchor for WKMG Local 6, emceed the festivities.

Leadership Appreciation Event More than 2,500 of United Way’s most generous donors attended the 13th Annual Leadership Appreciation Event, hosted by SeaWorld Orlando. The occasion, which recognizes individuals who generously donate $1,000 or more, is an annual tradition for many donors who enjoy a complimentary breakfast and a day in the park with their families. Shamu and friends add to the fun.
