Outcomes Report Michigan’s Transplant Program brings together a team of nationally recognized transplantation surgical and medical experts. In 2022, the lives of 288 patients were changed through transplantation and 30 people gave of themselves to become a living donor. This 2022 Outcomes Report offers a glimpse into the transplantation efforts.

Michigan’s Transplant Program

Reflected by numbers in this report is the expertise of transplantation team. The team is involved in national and local research to bring new medications or techniques to each unique patient. Advancing technology of robot assisted surgeries, the organ care system for hypothermic oxygenated perfusion (HOPE), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) and heart assistive devices support successful transplantation. Yet, none of this would matter without the experts who use the technology. These

are simply highlights of what makes Henry Ford Transplant program comprehensive. Looking beyond southeastern Michigan, the Henry Ford Transplant program has developed a state-wide network of Outreach Clinics. The goal is to reach patients who deserve the best care and expertise available. No matter where in Michigan a patient lives, they have access to the experts for pre- and post-transplantation care, lifesaving care they might not otherwise receive from Michigan’s most comprehensive transplant program.

Liver Transplant A recognized veteran team of hepatologists and liver transplant surgeons bring lifesaving options, including medical and surgical innovations to patients with advanced liver disease and liver failure. The experts of the Henry Ford Liver Transplant program offer both living- and deceased-donor liver transplantation. Few cadaver livers is always a challenge, however the need for liver donation was the impetus for development of The Henry Ford Center for Living Donation, a first in the United States. From a total of 104 transplants, 6 were from living donors.
