General description

To remove and fit idler gear bushes

Operation 6-9

Caution: If the bushes in the idler gear are to be renewed, the backlash between the camshaft gear and the idler gear, and between the idler gear and the fuel pump gear must be accurate. If the bushes are to be changed, remove them with a suitable puller. If a puller is not available, machine off the face of one of the bushes and press them out. Press in new bushes and machine the bores to get the correct clearance on the hub. The gear must have the correct backlash. Machine the faces to get the correct end clearance. When assembled, the idler gear backlash between the crank gear and idler gear must be checked in four positions. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise viewed from the front, and check the backlash between the two gears every 90°, see "Timing case and drive assembly" on page 22.
