Fig. 38: Telltales After you have completed the starting preparations in accordance with ìStarting the engineî on page3-15 and ìDrive interlock with transponder key (option)î on page3-17: ☞ Turn the ignition key (preheating start switch 4) to position ì1î • Telltale 54 for engine oil pressure comes on • Telltale 53 comes on if the parking brake is applied • Telltale 52 for alternator charge function comes on • Telltale 47 for the cold starter comes on ➥for about 5ñ 10 seconds at normal temperatures (over 0 C) and ➥for about 15 ñ 60 seconds at low temperatures (below 0 C) ➥The intake air is preheated via a temperature-dependent time lag relay ➥The telltale goes out as soon the preheating temperature is reached ☞ Press accelerator pedal 24/11 through about a quarter of its travel and ☞ Turn the ignition key to position ì3î and hold it in this position until the engine starts ☞ Release the ignition key ☞ Replace defective telltales immediately
Caution!
In order to avoid damage to the engine and the exhaust turbocharger due to insufficient lube oil supply: ☞ Do not run the cold engine at full throttle when starting and ïlet the engine warm up at low idling revs (for about 30 seconds) ☞ When switching off the engine: ïDo not switch off the engine from full throttle ïLet the engine run at idling speed for about 2 minutes
☞ Check that the following telltales have gone out: • Telltale 54 • Telltale 52 • Telltale 47
Important!
In general, a battery delivers less energy in cold conditions. Therefore make sure the battery is always well charged.
