JUMP START
functioning the engine
Pull throttle lever back to full speed position if engine is cold (1/4 speed position, if engine is warm). Turn master switch key to the “START” position. Turn ignition key to the start position. When the engine starts, release the key. Immediately pull throttle lever into low idle. Then set at one half speed. Maintain one half maximum speed until coolant temperature gauge needle moves from its minimum position. NOTe: Do not use the starter for more than 15 seconds without a pause of 30 seconds to allow it to cool down. Observe all instruments for proper reading. It is extremely important to allow the engine to run for three to five minutes at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle to permit the lubrication oil to warm and circulate freely through the bearings. This procedure is mandatory for cold weather operation. Check engine lubricating oil pressure. With engine running at high speed and the coolant at normal operating temperature, oil pressure must be within normal operating range. When the oil is cold no pressure may be indicated on the gauge for several seconds after the engine starts. If the pressure does not rise to normal or above, after a few seconds, the engine must be stopped immediately and the cause determined and corrected. Check the transmission fluid pressure. Within a few seconds after the engine starts the transmission oil pressure gauge must register in or near the green range.
starting the engine
1.
2. Start the engine and keep it running at one half speed for 3 to 4 minutes, before machine operation. Do not accelerate the engine just after starting, because the turbocharger shaft bearings will be damaged due to poor lubrication.
stopping the engine
Before shutting down the engine, keep it running a few minutes at low idle speed to permit turbo charger deceleration and stabilization at a low speed. Avoid shutting off the engine at a high speed, because the turbocharger shaft bearings will be damaged due to poor lubrication. If the engine is abruptly stopped when at high rotation, the turbo-charger will continue running after the engine oil pressure drops to ZERO. Operating at high rotations with lack of oil, may damage the turbo-charger bearings.
Changing engine speeds
Prolonged engine idling causes engine coolant operating temperature to fall below operating range. Since engines are readily started, there should be no reason for prolonged engine idling. Turn off the engine when this occurs. However, if it is necessary to keep the engine running, run at a speed fast enough to maintain normal oil pressure and engine coolant temperature. Place the transmission control lever in the neutral position and apply the parking brake. Lower the moldboard to the ground. Do not leave the machine unattended.
Cold starting (if equipped)
WARNING: The cold starting fluid (ether) may cause injury or death. Sparks, flames or extreme heat in contact with ether in the cold starting fluid reservoir may result in an explosion. Do not inhale the cold starting fluid vapors. Use face protection when removing or installing cold starting fluid reservoirs. Use cold starting fluid as per instructions contained in this manual.
NOTe: If the weather is cold, if the machine has been stopped for several weeks, or if the engine oil filter has been replaced, refer to “Filling the Turbocharger Lines with Oil”, in this manual. IMPORTANT: The cold starting system of this machine was designed to inject in the engine a specific quantity of ether during low temperature starting. The ether manual injection or any other manner where no control of injected volume exists, results in engine damages and creates dangerous situations to the person that performs the operation. This procedure its not recommended and should be avoided.
Important rules for ether handling
1. Get familiar with the correct method of how to start the engine with ether.
2.
3. Remove the cold start fluid reservoir from the machine before welding, grinding or cutting any part of the machine using a blowtorch. Use always a face protection and compressed air to remove any ether vapors from the environment. DO NOT inhale the ether vapors and let ether get in contact with your skin.
4.
5. Keep the cold starting fluid reservoir away from children’s reach. When temperature is within 0 and 5°C (35 and 40°F), remove the cold starting fluid reservoir from the machine. Before discarding an empty cold starting fluid reser-

DO NOT drill holes and DO NOT throw the reservoir in a flame. DO NOT store any additional fluid reservoirs in the operator’s area. Read always the instructions given on the ether reservoir.
starting the engine with ether
The cold starting resource with ether injects a specific quantity of this substance in the engine during the cold starting. 1. Refer to “Cold Starting of the Engine” in this manual and use the correct procedure to start the engine. 2. Turn the ignition switch to the IGN position. IMPORTANT: At every try, do not actuate the starter for more than 15 seconds and the cold starting switch pressed for more than 3 seconds. 3. Press and release the cold starting with ether button to inject a specific quantity of this substance in the engine. The ether is injected only after the button has been released. Use ether only to help you start the engine. Place the accelerator at 3/4 of maximum throttle to synchronize the injection pump with the cold starting conditions. Turn the ignition switch to the START position. If engine does not start after two attempts, check the ether quantity existing in the reservoir. When engine starts running, move accelerator rapidly at 1/3 to 1/2 of maximum throttle in order to avoid damages to the engine. NOTe: The starting aid system with ether can only be used when engine temperature is below 10°C (50°F). NOTe: Before replacing the ether reservoir, read carefully the instructions and warnings given on the reservoir.
ether Reservoir (if equipped)
IMPORTANT: Read carefully the existing warnings and information on the ether reservoir. DO NOT keep ether reservoirs in the operator’s area. Should you perform any welding, grinding, or blowtorch operations on the machine, remove the ether reservoir from the machine. Use compressed air to remove any ether residues from the area.
filling the Turbocharger Lines with Oil
If the weather is very cold, if the machine has been stopped for several weeks, or if the engine oil filter has been replaced, fill the turbocharger lines with oil. 1.
Make sure that the parking brake is applied.
2. Disconnect the injection pump solenoid connector.
3. Activate the starter for approximately 15 to 20 seconds until lines are filled with oil.
4. Connect the injection pump solenoid and start the engine.
engine speed
Do not run the engine at low idle for long period, as this will result in low temperature operation which can form acid and foreign material in the engine oil sump.
ETHER RESERVOIR
Replacement of the ether Reservoir
The ether reservoir is located on the left side of the engine compartment, next to the air conditioning compressor. 1. Loosen the clamp. 2. Turn the ignition switch to the START position, pressing at the same time on the cold starting switch. Repeat this procedure until the engine is running. 3. Install a new ether reservoir by turning it clockwise. 4. Tighten the clamp. IMPORTANT: When removing the ether reservoir, the following precautions must be taken to protect the solenoid valve: a. Remove the ether reservoir. a. Install the solenoid valve cover.
CAUTION: The cold starting fluid (ether) may cause serious injuries and even death. Any Sparks, flame or excessive heat in contact with the ether in the cold starting reservoir may result in an explosion. Do not inhale the cold starting fluid gases, use a protection mask when removing or installing the reservoir.
