Lake Powell

Powell

Scenes filmed at Lake Powell in Star Wars: A New Hope depict the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO wandering the rocky desert terrain of Tatooine after their escape pod crash-lands. The dramatic cliffs and canyons of the area were used to create the harsh, alien landscape as the droids separate and begin their journey across the planet.

Valley

Death Valley was used in Star Wars: A New Hope to film several scenes set on Tatooine, including R2-D2’s solo trek through the desert and his capture by Jawas. Iconic locations like Golden Canyon, Desolation Canyon, and Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes provided the rugged, alien terrain of Luke Skywalker’s home planet. Dante’s View was also used as the overlook for Mos Eisley spaceport.

Kīlauea Hawaii

Kīlauea Volcano in Hawai‘i

Volcanoes National Park was used as a filming location for The Mandalorian to portray the volcanic landscapes of Nevarro in Season 1. Its dramatic lava fields and rugged terrain provided the perfect backdrop for scenes near the Imperial outpost, including intense standoffs and lava river sequences. The raw, otherworldly environment added to the gritty tone of the series.

Mount Etna

Etna

Footage of Mount Etna erupting in 2002 was used in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith to bring the volcanic planet Mustafar to life. The dramatic lava flows and explosive activity were composited into the background of the intense duel between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. This real-world eruption helped ground the fiery landscape in realism, adding visual weight to the film’s most emotional battle.

Vatnajökull

Vatnajökull

The Temple of Kyber Crystals in Star Wars: The Clone Wars was inspired by the vast, icy landscapes of Vatnajökull Glacier in Iceland. The glacier’s dramatic, frozen terrain and towering ice formations helped shape the temple’s design as a sacred, mystical place tied to the Force. This connection to Vatnajökull’s natural beauty and icy environment underscores the ancient and spiritual significance of the Kyber crystal temple, making it a perfect backdrop for Ahsoka’s journey in the Force.

Pinnacles AU

The barren, windswept landscapes of Pinnacles Desert in Western Australia served as inspiration for Jakku, Rey’s home planet in The Force Awakens. The desert’s striking, rugged rock formations and vast, empty spaces mirrored Jakku’s desolation and isolation, reflecting Rey’s life as a scavenger waiting for something greater. The natural beauty and starkness of Pinnacles Desert helped create the harsh, unforgiving environment that defines Rey’s early years.
