A message from the Library Director Hello, The HPL is proud to add 1000 Books Before Kindergarten to our educational programs for children ages birth to 5 beginning 2021. I am enthusiastic about offering this program to our community. It has been on my bucket list for a couple of years, and I have watched this program become a fundamental learning block to early literacy. The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program is a nationwide literacy initiative that incentivizes young children and their guardians to build literacy skills and kindergarten readiness. The objectives are to promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers and to encourage parent and child bonding through reading. Numerous studies estimate that as many as one in five children have difficulties learning to read. Reading has been associated with an early indicator of academic success. Public formal education does not typically start until ages 5-6. Before then, parents and caregivers are the first education providers during the 0-5 early critical years. It has also shown that families who start reading aloud to their children at birth strengthen their language skills and build their vocabulary – two essential tools for learning to read when they attend Kindergarten. And reading in an interactive style can raise a child’s IQ by 6 points. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge is a simple (read a book, any book to your child, read 1,000 before Kindergarten) and a very manageable endeavor. The program will take anywhere from a few months to a few years. The program is self-paced and will depend on how often you read together. My goal is to provide a simple, innovative, yet fun approach to establishing strong early literacy skills. We help young children gain the confidence necessary to become strong readers. In the spring, The Hewitt Public Library will host a launch party (virtual) for the new 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Program. The HPL’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program will provide curated book bags to send home weekly, with logs to record books and earn prizes. CITY OF HEWITT MAY 1, 2021 GENERAL ELECTION

The next General Election will be held on May 1, 2021. The four positions that have terms expiring are Council Member Ward 1, Place 1; Ward 2, Place 1; Ward 3, Place 1, and an At-Large position. Candidate packets will be available January 4, 2021. Filing dates begin Wednesday, January 13, 2021 and end on Friday, February 12, 2021. One Saturday a month join our Teen Librarian, Caitlin, via Zoom to conduct experiments using common household items. You can either do the experiments with her or watch, enjoy, and learn! Do you like to craft? Every month you can register on our event calendar for a craft project. Our Teen Librarian, Caitlin, will prepare the supplies for you to pick up from the Hewitt Library, then you can join her on Zoom to make the craft together!

Every week our Teen Librarian, Caitlin, sends out a one-sheet tutorial on different elements of Dungeons & Dragons - race, classes, alighnments, etc. This helps players (or interested parties) get a better

understanding of the world of D&D. If you are interested in receiving these tutorials, let us know at library@cityofhewitt.com.

Hewitt Park

Hewitt park offers many amenities to enjoy the outdoors. The park offers 32 acres of land that features mature trees, open green space, playgrounds and much more. There is an 18-hole disc golf course that travels throughout the park. At the entrance of the park, there are two sand volleyball courts with stadium seating. Enjoy two playgrounds with restroom facilities nearby and seating for parents around the perimeter of the playground. Our play area is ADA accessible, with a wheelchair ramp at the entrance and equipped with a large adaptive swing. Practice baseball with our baseball backstop located within the ½ mile concrete walking track. Hewitt park offers a sports field that is the standard American Football field. It has two sets of stadium bleachers on each side of the field. There are lighted basketball half courts with a 9’6” goal. Our 1/2-mile concrete track is a very popular alternative to traditional track settings. Feel free to take advantage of the outdoor workout stations located around the track. • • • • • • • • • • •
