Immens goeie teksten: de uitreiking van de Toneelschrijfprijs 2020 Maak alvast een plekje vrij in je boekenkast. De winnende toneeltekst, Immens van Casper Vandeputte en Vincent van der Valk, is ‘een meesterwerk’ en ‘een monnikenwerk’ volgens de jury van de Toneelschrijfprijs.

De jury, bestaande uit Judith de Rijke, Rashif El Kaoui en Els Van Steenberghe, koos Immens als winnaar uit de vier teksten op de shortlist (zie onder). Casper Vandeputte en Vincent van der Valk ontvangen 10 000 euro van organisatoren Literatuur Vlaan­ deren, de Taalunie, het Fonds Podium­­­ kunsten en het Nederlands Letteren­fonds, gesteund door deAuteurs en het Lira Fonds.

De Poolse Bruid van Jibbe Willems wint de vertaalprijs van Maison Antoine Vitez en wordt vertaald in het Frans.

De winnaar Casper en Vincent werkten met Immens samen aan hun zevende project, wat resulteerde in een voorstelling die Vincent speelde en dit jaar de juryselectie haalde van het Nederlands Theater Festival. En nu dus ook nog eens de Toneelschrijfprijs erbovenop.

Wat je kunt lezen in dat monnikenwerk?

Een mentale pelgrimstocht van het personage Fritz langs vele thema’s, zoals bijvoorbeeld vrije wil, liefde en het mense­ lijk verlangen naar geloof, waarbij univer­ seel en brandend actueel hand in hand wandelen. Immens is geen droog en hermetisch werk met als doel je kennis over Nietzsche bij te spijkeren, maar een ‘prikkelend en levenslustig feest’, aldus Casper en Vincent, met fictieve humoristi­ sche zinnen in plaats van citaten van de bekende filosoof. Ook wie bij het horen van Nietzsche eerst aan een nietjesmachine denkt, kan de tekst begrijpen.

Wat Immens nog bijzonder maakt, is het gezamenlijke schrijfproces. ‘Een ongelofelijk gedoe’, zo omschrijven de auteurs het zelf. Net als Nietzsche liepen ze vele rondjes in het park om na te denken, wat overigens ook in de voorstelling zelf terugkeert. Ook gaven Casper en Vincent elkaar vaak kleine opdrachten die ze na verloop van tijd samen bespraken. Dat had erg smaakvolle stukken tekst tot gevolg. God mag dan wel dood zijn, Immens is zo levenslustig als iets. Tijd om eens te surfen naar de website van De Nieuwe Toneelbibliotheek dus, waar je Immens en de andere genomineerde teksten vindt.

Volgens de jury: ‘Een tekst die dusdanig graaft in het gedachtegoed van Friedrich Nietzsche dat het ons bijna koortsig maakte. Omdat ze nergens uitleggerig worden, en nooit hun humor en relativering verliezen, of de menselijke maat, slaagde het schrijversduo erin ons, met de tong door het zand, mee te laten graven.’

Uit de toneeltekst: ‘Ik ben sinds een tijd bezig eerlijk, echt eerlijk te zijn. Sinds gisteren. En wat ik eigenlijk probeer te doen is denken: is dat echt zo, of is het maar een verhaaltje?’ ‘Leuke bloes!’ ‘Is dat echt zo? Of is dat maar een verhaal­ tje?’ ‘Papa is nu een sterretje aan de hemel dat naar jou kijkt.’ ‘Is dat echt zo, of is dat maar een verhaaltje?’ ‘Ieder mens heeft recht op…’ ‘Is dat echt zo, of is dat maar een verhaaltje? En dat is moeilijk voor een mens. Het is menselijk, al te menselijk om verhaaltjes te verzinnen.’

De andere genomineerden Hertenleer Anna Carlier

Volgens de jury: ‘In Hertenleer belanden we in een post-apocalyptisch tijdperk.’

Volgens Anna Carlier: ‘Er is een hele generatie mensen die kinderen willen en beseffen: Is het er nog moment voor?’ zo vertelt Anna in het filmpje over haar toneeltekst. Daarin vertelt ze dat ze haar tekst een soort schets is geworden van een dystopisch toekomstbeeld. Zo vertelt een moeder over haar ongeboren dochter en hoe ze zich zorgen maakt over haar toekomst. Zo vraagt de lezer zich af: welke toekomst is er voor kinderen?

Ode aan Buldegart Bastiaan Vandendriessche Volgens de jury: ‘Bastiaan Vanden­ driessche laat ons vallen voor twee giganten die elkaars groteske, afzichtelijke werkelijkheid adoreren en de lezer daar weerloos in meeslepen.’

Volgens Bastiaan Vandendriessche: ‘Het is een soort archaïsche, middeleeuwse oude taal. Ik heb nog nooit dit soort taal geschreven en dat was een hele leuke taalontdekking.’ Die ontdekking is begon­ nen in Zwitserland, waar hij met zijn vrienden een spel speelt over de uitvinding van een onbestaande naam. Daaruit ontstaan de twee namen van de tekst: Brullejan en Buldegart. De volgende dag in de trein is hij met die inspiratie personages beginnen bedenken zonder te weten waar het verhaal naartoe zou gaan. Dat vloeide daaruit spontaan voort. In deze ‘taal­ ontdekking’ laat hij het publiek zichzelf ontdekken met de vraag: Wie bent u?

Brullejan of Buldegart?

De Poolse Bruid Jibbe Willems Volgens de jury: ‘Een uniek taalbouwwerk waar twee beschadigde individuen bij elkaar thuiskomen en in rust en kracht verstrengelen.’

Volgens Jibbe Willems… gaat het over twee mensen die op de rand van de afgrond staan. De personages van zijn tekst hebben niet per se communicatieve waarde. Vanuit deze gedachte creëert Willems een vorm om reflectief en poëtisch twee personages op te voeren die in de derde persoon over zichzelf praten. Het gaat in tegen alle basisregels van het drama. De man is niet gewend om te communiceren, terwijl de vrouw geen machtige taal spreekt. Volgens Willems is gesproken taal altijd ‘afgeslachte gedachte’. Daaruit komt deze dialoog.

De man: ‘Als er al een God is, dan is het een lul.’

De vrouw: ‘Amen.’

ACT Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company & Het Zuidelijk Toneel

‘Door alles weg te vegen, probeert Beckett tot de diepe essentie te komen van wat ons drijft’ De voorstelling ACT van Kris Verdonck verkent Stories and Texts for Nothing van Samuel Beckett op drie verschillende manieren. Acteur Johan Leysen brengt een monoloog. Filosoof Jean Paul Van Bendegem biedt een filosofische reflectie op de thema’s in het werk van Beckett. Installatie Mass #2 verbeeldt het landschap waarin het personage zich beweegt. Samen probeert dit drieluik een onmogelijk personage in een onmogelijk verhaal te brengen.

Wanneer Kris Verdonck aansluit in de radiostudio van het TheaterFestival, lijkt hij gelukkig te zijn. Hij kijkt er dan ook erg naar uit om de voorstelling ACT opnieuw te spelen: ‘Samen met Kristof (van Baarle, dramaturg van de voorstelling, red.) en Johan (Leysen, acteur in het stuk, red.) hebben we ons enorm geamuseerd met het maken van deze voorstelling.

Bovendien is ook het heel leuk om de voorstelling te spelen.’ De toon voor ons gesprek is meteen gezet. Het is een onverwacht contrast: Kris die enthousiast en grappend vertelt over een voorstelling die gaat over moeilijke en zware thema’s.

ACT is gebaseerd op vijf van dertien teksten die samen Stories and Texts for Nothing vormen. Samuel Beckett schreef

het geheel in 1946, net na het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het is in deze en andere teksten uit deze tijd dat Beckett zijn eigen stem en focus vond. De terug­ kerende thema’s van Beckett trekken Kris enorm aan, vertelt hij. ‘Becketts verhalen gaan in essentie over de mens in de twintigste eeuw. Na de Tweede Wereld­ oorlog is alles uit elkaar gevallen. Alles is failliet. Beckett heeft dat zelf ook meege­ maakt. Op vlucht voor de Nazi’s staat misschien wel de bekendste toneelschrijver van de twintigste eeuw plots met zijn voetjes in de modder. Beckett moet toen echt gedacht hebben: “F*ck, wat doe ik hier eigenlijk”. Het is vanaf dat moment dat zijn personages niets meer weten. De absolute waarheden vallen volledig weg.

Het (gebrek aan) verhaal De teksten uit Stories and Texts for Nothing die centraal staan in ACT zetten deze ideeën op scherp, volgens Kris. ‘In zijn andere teksten loopt nog een zeker personage rond. Maar in deze tekst gaat Beckett verder en denkt hij na over wie dat personage eigenlijk is en waaruit het bestaat. “Misschien ben ik dat wel?

Misschien bestaat het personage wel uit mijn herinneringen?” lijkt Beckett te denken. En daar stopt het niet. Beckett vraagt zich af of personages wel kunnen sterven. Je kan als schrijver een personage laten sterven, maar wat als dat personage de volgende dag opnieuw in je hoofd zit?.’

Deze vragen zorgen ervoor dat Stories and Texts for Nothing geen verhaal meer heeft of wil hebben. Het personage, of eerder de man op het podium, geeft het zelf toe.

Zijn grootste fout? Hij wou een eigen verhaal (kunnen) vertellen. Het enige dat overblijft is de schrijver, eenzaam en alleen op zijn kamer.

Het is een vraag die Kris al jaren bezighoudt: leven we echt in een verhaal of creëren we het slechts omdat we het nodig hebben? Hij legt het uit met een droom als voorbeeld. ‘Stel je voor dat je partner je vraagt wat je gedroomd hebt die nacht. De kans is groot dat je vertelt: “Ik zat in een raam en er vlogen olifanten voorbij en ik sprong er op en ging de wereld rond.” Je vertelt een verhaal, maar is het dat wel echt? Vermoedelijk was het gewoon een reeks associaties tussen verschillende beelden.’ Hij vervolgt met een ander voorbeeld. ‘Veel mensen zijn ervan overtuigd dat dat ze nog exact weten waar ze waren ten tijde van 9/11.

Ik ook. Ze hebben dat ooit eens getest.

Het verhaal dat ze vertellen bleek totaal niet te kloppen.’ We hebben als mensen een verhaal nodig, maar wat als dat verhaal wegvalt?

Onmogelijke opdracht Dat idee probeert ACT naar het podium te vertalen. Het lijkt een onmogelijke opdracht. Personage en verhaal vliegen meteen het raam uit. Kris vindt het heerlijk.

‘De eerste zinnen van ACT zijn: “Suddenly.

No, at last. Long last, I couldn’t anymore. I couldn’t go on.” Het verhaal stopt al bij het uitspreken van de eerste woorden. Het personage haalt zichzelf constant onderuit en veegt alles meteen van tafel.’ Maar door elke vorm van personage en verhaal

weg te vegen, lijken zowel Kris Verdonck als Samuel Beckett op zoek te gaan naar een van de grote mysteries van ons leven: waar komt onze levenskracht om verder te doen toch vandaan? ‘Je kan die “I couldn’t” vergelijken met een zieke die het opgeeft of een marathonloper die niet meer kan.

Toch is er elke keer plots een stemmetje dat zegt: “Je moet door!”. We weten niet goed waarom, maar we blijven doorgaan.

Door alles weg te vegen, probeert Beckett tot de diepe essentie te komen van wat ons drijft. Hij zoekt het nulpunt om zo te achterhalen wat onze levenskracht is.’

Deze nothingness komt ook terug in de interpretatie van Johan Leysen. Het podium wordt overheerst door het niets en de stilte.

Hij zet dit onmogelijke personage op een bijna depressieve wijze weer. Hij brengt de tekst alsof zijn levensverhaal voorbij is. Toch bestaan er ook andere visies die de tekst lezen als een klucht. Kris knikt bevestigend: ‘Je kan de personages van Beckett ook neerzetten in lijn met Charlie Chaplin of Buster Keaton. Dat kan en dat mag uiteraard, maar dat is niet wat er gebeurd wanneer wij drie (Kris, Kristof en Johan, red.) met Beckett aan de slag gaan. Dat zit blijkbaar in de aard van het beestje. Zodra we in dialoog gaan met het werk van Beckett, glijdt dat af naar iets duister.’

Multimediale Beckett De kern van de voorstelling ligt in de tekst van Beckett. Toch heeft multimediale duizendpoot Kris het werk van Beckett ook op andere manieren vertaald. ‘Met ons drieën wilden we er alles aan doen om te communiceren naar en met het publiek.

We houden van Beckett en willen dat duidelijk overbrengen aan de toeschou­ wers. Het is te makkelijk om van deze tekst een abstracte voorstelling te maken waar werkelijk niemand iets van snapt. Dat wilden we bewust niet.’

Er werd een dubbele keuze gemaakt.

Enerzijds werd filosoof Jean Paul Van Bendegem gevraagd een filosofisch kader rond het werk van Beckett te scheppen.

‘Ik heb Jean Paul gevraagd het werk van Beckett uit te leggen zonder het woordje Beckett te laten vallen. Het resultaat is een roetsjbaan door de westerse filosofie en schetst een historisch kader rond Becketts werk.’

Ander­zijds is er Mass #2, het landschap dat Kris ontwikkelde voor de voorstelling Conversations (at the end of the world) en dat dit jaar op het TheaterFestival te zien is als aparte installatie in het Kaaitheater. ‘Ik vond die zwarte sneeuw van mijn voorstel­ ling wel passen als landschap in de wereld van Beckett, een soort landschap dat heel concreet is, maar ook naar een universum neigt. Bovendien zit er een clash in Mass #2 tussen het organisch over elkaar en heen en weer bewegen van de zwarte bolletjes en de artificiële mechaniek in de bak die dat bewegen mogelijk maakt.’ Kijkend naar de voorstelling krijg je het gevoel dat je naar een woest, dood landschap kijkt dat langzaam beweegt door onzichtbare maar ook onweerstaanbare tektonische krachten.

Listen to the bloody machine Het is een thema dat vaak centraal staat in zijn eigen werk, maar ook terugkomt in het werk van Beckett. ‘Het gaat over het idee van vrije wil en de vraag of we controle hebben of overgeleverd zijn aan de grote natuurkrachten.’ De wereld van objecten heeft altijd gelijk, vindt Kris.

‘Objecten hebben een eigen leven op het podium.’ Het maakt een repetitieproces soms niet gemakkelijk: ‘Het zijn vaak meer de objecten die mij regisseren dan ik de objecten. Denk aan de zwarte sneeuw uit Conversations (at the end of the world).

Iedereen had meteen het gevoel: “hier kunnen we niet boven, dit krijgen we niet weggespeeld, de acteurs niet, de technie­ kers niet, de pianist niet. Er zat niets anders op dan: listen to the bloody machine.’

Het is deze veelzijdige benadering die de complexiteit van Becketts werk uit elkaar haalt maar ook treffend weergeeft

De acteur, de filosoof en het object staan los van elkaar en belich­ ten elk een verschillend facet van Becketts wereld, maar werken ook samen en verdiepen elkaars ervaring. Belangrijk vindt Kris zelf: ‘Beckett was misschien wel een van de weinige theaterschrijvers die echt multimediaal werkte. Iedere keer dat er een nieuwe uitvinding of nieuw medium op de markt kwam, sprong Beckett er meteen op. Dat ging van taperecorders, tot radio en televisie. Hij gebruikte dat allemaal als dramatische middelen.’

Egoloos regisseren Dat resulteert in ACT in een multimediale voorstelling waarin elk aspect elkaar versterkt. Het acteren doet het filosofisch kader leven en omgekeerd. De traag bewegende scenografie Mass #2 zoomt in op de onderliggende wereld van de acteur en biedt een meer contemplatieve ervaring. ‘Zij maken samen de voorstelling.

Het zijn die bolletjes die het doen, het is Johan die acteert en Jean-Paul die vertelt.

Ik noem het wel eens egoloos regisseren.’ (lacht) Toch is het precies wat Kris wilde realiseren met het werk. ‘Ik wou een parcours creëren dat je meeneemt en wanneer je ‘s avonds in je bed ligt alles laat samenkomen.’

ACT is op 11 en 12 september te zien in Kaaitheater. Mass #2 is de rest van het festival te bewonderen in de foyer van Kaaitheater.

Mia Kermis Stefanie Claes / Lucinda Ra & Vooruit i.s.m. De Studio

‘Art can open a world that I A foundling is a child without a past.

But how can you live without a past?

Visual artist and theatre maker Stefanie Claes addresses this question in Mia Kermis. She tells a life story without words, but only with puppets and paintings.

How did you first come into contact with the topic of foundling children?

Stefanie Claes: ‘I lived in Antwerp and a few streets from my house there was a baby hatch, the only one in Belgium. I was walking past it and saw the word “Vondelingenlade” on the house. I thought “Wow, it’s here?” and wanted to visit it. I contacted the owners and they were really friendly. They showed me the whole organisation for families and mothers in poverty. They said “Here you open the door and you put the baby here. Then you close the box and the alarm goes off.” She also activated the alarm. It was strange because it was such a practical thing. It stayed in my head to work with this.’

Why did you decide to make a play about them?

‘In the beginning, I just wanted to think about it and work with it somehow. I was also busy making puppets, just experimenting with them in my atelier. At one point this idea of the foundling child connected to the puppets. Because I thought it was good to tell the story with images. I had an image stuck in my head. It was the image of a baby lying somewhere, and everybody, including the parents, is gone. That was the start and that is why I stuck with the theme of a foundling. For me, the foundling is a metaphor for everyone. Everybody has to deal with their history.’

During your research, did you get to talk to someone who grew up as a foundling?

‘I have a very good friend who is a foundling, so I talked to him.

Other people said “I can give you names.” At a certain moment, I didn’t want it anymore. I wanted to tell something else. So I mostly talked to people who are working with children with no parents, for example at an adoption house. I think it’s important to hear the opinions of experts. For me that was enough information. In the beginning I was also thinking about talking to a child. But they are very vulnerable at a young age so I didn’t want to do it. But maybe I want to show my performance to them.’

Can you walk us through the process of developing the play?

‘I worked on it for a few years. I told myself in the beginning that I wanted to work very intuitively. I also decided to work alone.

Sometimes I made a puppet and from that, I got ideas for the play.

It was as if my puppets and drawings told me how to build up my story. I didn’t imagine a story from the beginning. I made puppets without knowing whether they have a role in the play. For example, I made an Indian and I really worked on it for a long time and thought “Oh yes, it’s really theatrical!” but at the end, I could not use it in my story. Because I was working alone, I also needed rehearsals from time to time. I started really early in the process to show it to the public. Then I had to explain really well that it was not finished yet.’ (laughs)

scenes. I want to show that someone who doesn’t know his or her parents has a big blind spot, a dark place where other people know their roots. I wanted to bring across the feeling of a blind spot in the story of my character. But it’s not the case that I literally make her life. I didn’t want to tell a story from A to Z. For me, it starts with the story of her life. But then I will open it. The piece starts with two people having sex. Because that’s the beginning of everyone.

So it was important for me to start with that scene.’

Have you always been interested in how other people lead their lives?

‘Yes. Biographies of people who are not known is something that triggers me. It’s the first time I made something like this, a story of one person. But every time when I work, I need stories of people.

For example, I made something about Chernobyl a few years ago and I also needed to read about the people who were there at the time. I need a human factor in my plays. Now I am working on the story of my grandmother who was in a concentration camp. The biography is something that always comes back.’

Why did you choose puppet theatre to tell your story?

‘In fact, I really don’t like the classical puppet theatre. But I had the feeling that it could be a form I can use to tell my story. And also with drawings, I have the feeling “Oh, it’s such a nice way to tell a story!” For me, it can open a world that I cannot always find in words. Before, I also wrote a bit. But sometimes, it feels a bit claustrophobic. And then I also had voice problems in another play and I thought “Pff, when I can show something without speaking, I’m relaxed.” They are big decisions for me. Do I use text?

Shall I use film? Music? Who makes the music? How do I use light?

For me it’s very, very important. But I want to use the forms that I already make. If I want to use puppets, I will not take lessons in making them. I don’t make puppets very professionally but I don’t want to learn it. I want to make them how I make them.’

How did you acquire the skills to make all these puppets?

‘In art school, I wanted to make puppets but I was scared to start.

But then the professors said “You have to make now, what you really want to make” and I thought: okay, I will start to make puppets! And I made some very bad ones. When nobody was looking, I tried it. (laughs) Since then I never stopped. Maybe the first seed of Mia Kermis was planted many years ago.’

How important is the music in your play?

‘In the beginning I thought it would be a necessary factor. Because it’s really hard to show something without words and no music and no sounds. Then I wanted to work with Jeroen Van Herzeele, a jazz musician. He’s really good and we tried one rehearsal together. But I had the feeling I really had to do it alone. It was stronger than myself, that idea. So I tried out how to make music myself and bought a loop station. Now I also make music and I discovered that I really like to do it myself. I improvise with my voice and some children’s instruments, a little flute for example.’

Mia Kermis is a wordless play. How do you tell a story without words?

Your play tells the story of foundling child Mia Kermis. How did you approach the task of reconstructing the life story of a foundling?

‘I realised that it’s possible to use something simple, like two puppets, to tell a big story. You have a man and a woman and you show them naked. It already tells a story. You can manipulate the story really easily. When you turn the woman a bit, you can tell that she doesn’t like the situation. And in the meanwhile, every day I thought: what do I have to tell? What is my story? I don’t immedia­ tely have the answer but I think asking the question while working is my method. I build it up from scene to scene, chronologically. And I didn’t write anything down. It was the first time I completely trusted the things I was making. I had the whole story in my head. Only when the premiere came in February, I wrote some of it down so that I don’t forget anything in the heat of the moment.’

cannot always find in words’ ‘Having a child of my own, a son, was also an important trigger to make this. The birth was such an incredible thing so I had the feeling that I have to do something about it. I hate it when people have ideas of what parents have to do or when a mother cannot take care of a baby. That they punish her. I don’t understand that.

When I was giving birth, I thought everybody who gets a child loves the baby. But for some women, the circumstances are so hard that they can’t do anything but give the child away.’

Mia Kermis is a foundling who is named after the place where she was found. How does a last name influence a life?

‘It really is something, a name. That’s why I looked at the archives of the OCMW, the long lists of foundlings’ names in the 1800s. I saw names that were really funny. Like Mary Orgy or names from comic books. But it was also tragic. Because it’s a name! There I also saw Anna Theresia Kermis. For my character Mia, I don’t think the influence of her name was very positive. But I wanted to make a piece that gives hope. I was searching for a story that was more positive. ‘

Mia Kermis goes on a quest to find her past. Is knowing your past necessary for moving on?

‘It’s hard to say yes. Because it would mean that people who don’t know their roots cannot do it. And that’s not true. But sometimes it helps to understand yourself. It’s a part of who we are, our past. For me, it’s very important to know stories about my parents, my grandparents. Because I can relativise myself. I am a very small part of a very big story. There’s a reason why Mia Kermis wants to know who her parents are. She’s a bit stuck with that. But my story is more about letting go of that idea. You have to make something of your life without your parents. You have to let it go.’

The play is also about being lonely. When do you feel lonely and what do you do when you feel lonely?

‘I think when people don’t understand you. When you feel that you cannot make connections with others. For example, a foundling wants to make a connection with the parents but cannot do it.

Overcoming loneliness works differently for everybody. My solution is moving and walking. Sometimes it’s reading a book. Or just letting the time pass and trusting that it will go away.’

The baby box near your house was the starting point of your play. After doing all this research and thinking about the topic so intensely, what do you feel when you see a baby box now?

‘When I heard that there was going to be a new baby hatch in Brussels, I was happy. It still triggers me when I hear on the radio that there was a new foundling in the hatch. It’s the same feeling as when I started. I was also touched by the news that a woman in Antwerp put a baby in an apartment and walked away. She couldn’t take care of the baby. The police found her and then it was in the newspaper that she may have to go to jail. They immediately punished her. It’s hard to read because I think there’s nobody who has questions about why she couldn’t care for her baby. In the beginning I wanted to put it in the piece, my idea that you have to understand the women instead of punishing them. But then I wanted to challenge the audience to think about it themsel­ ves. The mother is still in the play though. In a dream, you feel her presence a bit. At least I hope so.’

Screws Alexander Vantournhout / Not Standing

‘I always enjoy hanging hanging upside upside down down with the boots’ Screws are used to connect and keep together things through a twisting movement. In his performance, Alexander Vantournhout twists dance and circus together to create a world in which gravity is defied. Performers are pushed and pulled into every possible direction. Curious about this experience, we talked to dancer-acrobats Axel Guérin and Emmi Väisänen.

Jasper Delva & Nina Cools

You are both performers in Screws, but have different backgrounds in contemporary dance and circus. How do you look at each other’s disciplines?

Axel Guérin: ‘I have a background in circus. When I started acrobatics, I looked up to dancers. They could move more fluently and elegantly than me. I wanted to become more of a dancer, so I did a lot of dance workshops.’

Emmi Väisänen: ‘I come from dance, so for me it is a bit vice versa.

You can take things from both disciplines. We learn a lot from each other. That is also how Alexander (Vantournhout, red.) works. He has a background in both circus and dance and is interested in bringing them together. Because of how we are trained, our minds work differently’

How would you explain each other’s way of thinking?

Emmi: ‘In circus you work a long time on just one discipline and become an expert in it. In dance, we touch upon different things.

Circus is more spectacular, more dangerous. Circus is more about acrobatics. The body needs to be stronger.’

Axel: ‘Dance is much more varied. I’m an acrobat so don’t ask me to do a trapeze. That would be very hard. I notice that dancers often have less upper body strength, but they have amazings legs and balance. I don’t. But maybe that’s my long lengthy body. (laughs) Dancers are always really grounded. Acrobats have strength all over the body because our focus is more general.’

So a dancer and an acrobat have different bodies?

Axel: ‘We focus on getting our body strong. Dancers focus more on their skills, not on strength in particular.’

Emmi: ‘In circus, strength is very important, also for safety. Dancers work with complexity. They talk a lot about the different qualities of

their body, for example doing something softly or fast. This is less so in circus where the body is more functional.’

What is it like to work together with Alexander?

Emmi: ‘Alexander combines both worlds. We work in a way that needs a functional purpose, but at the same time there is also complexity. That’s why for me it is hard to define Screws as either dance or circus. It is somewhere in between.’

Axel: ‘This is my third creation process with him. I start to notice patterns: Alexander likes to find a movement and then explore all its variations. He investigates all the possibilities within this move­ ment. He knows what he wants to achieve. He wants to make the movement progressive. This results in a steep learning curve. It always goes up up up. At first, I had troubles with this. I had to adapt to this. I needed to learn this way of thinking.’

Emmi: ‘I really enjoy the fact that we take one specific thing and go really deep into it. I love research. I love nitpicking. With Screws, I had to adapt to the strength of the movements. According to our different backgrounds, we found different challenges in the performance.’

‘Together we are able to fight gravity’ What’s your favorite but also hardest movement of the performance?

Axel: ‘I enjoy the ice shoes. We are on a wooden pallet with spiky shoes. This duet is also the hardest part of the performance for me.

It is a dangerous movement. I often wonder: what if I make a mistake and spike my partner? But this also keeps me on edge.

My partner is smaller and when we lean against each other, the balance is unequal. There is a lot more tension. This asks more of my long body. It asks a lot of my attention.’

Emmi: ‘For me, it changes every time we do the performance. But I always enjoy hanging upside down with the boots. It is also the hardest move. It is not normal to hang. You need to get used to it.

To hang from your ankles for eight to ten minutes is very hard.

Something that I love as well is the closeness of the audience. It gives the performance a certain intimacy. Every section of the performance has a moment that gives us the opportunity to look at the audience. I really enjoy this. To see their reaction is amazing, especially when the kids are baffled and completely tongue-tied.

You can feel the connection, something you don’t always have when you perform on a classic stage with the audience in the dark.’

Screws Alexander Vantournhout / Not Standing

How did you like performing at KANAL? Emmi: ‘KANAL is great! During Working Title Festival we had a great time performing Screws. A big reason for this is the sound in KANAL. The performance has a section where we jump with the spiky shoes on a wooden pallet. The acoustics really magnify the sound, making the experience even better.’

Alex: ‘I haven’t performed in KANAL yet. I have only seen it from the outside. The building looks amazing though. The fact that it is an old car factory also makes me excited. I am really into the world of car mechanics.’

As people we are often not aware of gravity. How do you as a dancer and an acrobat experience gravity?

Alex: ‘During rehearsal, Alexander said that I needed to jump higher in the section with the shoes. Not really higher, but lifting my legs more so it seems higher. This was a moment when I could really feel gravity. I asked myself the question: “Why can’t I just jump higher?” These boots are very heavy. You need to do more because of the extra weight. In the beginning, you jump in the way you always do, but this time the boots hold you down. You have to learn to jump higher. You need to be aware of the extra weight.

Now I find myself jumping higher, defying gravity with every jump.’

Emmi: ‘For me, gravity is most present when I’m hanging upside down. It is a strange and uncommon sensation to move while hanging. Squatting upside down feels unnatural. It is in these moments that I experience gravity. Another moment is the section with the bowling ball. The bowling ball weighs eight to ten kilo­ grams and really emphasizes gravity for me while moving. As a spectator, you can see gravity doing its job with the performer.’

Alex: ‘The end scene, where we move and crawl together is another moment where you can feel and see gravity. You lie and lean against each other to move. In those moments, you truly understand what balance is. When you are not in the right position, you get sucked into the black hole of gravity. You need the force of your partner to move. We tried to do it individually in rehearsals but it is not possible. Together we are able to fight gravity.

‘The performance comes down to push and pull’ Do you need to defy any other forces besides gravity?

Emmi: ‘All the different sections have very different forces at work.

Think of the forces of the objects, the forces of your partners. The performance comes down to push and pull. You feel a push coming from somewhere and then a pull. You respond with a push or a pull. It is a game that does not stop, especially – but not only – in the last section. It is a very delicate structure. It needs to be precise. You need to be equal in the amount of force you use.

It comes down to exact placement, precisely because there are a lot of forces in play.’

Alex: ‘Also, regardless of the different body structures, it is important that we are equals when we move. When you are a heavier person, you need to lean less than a lighter person. You need to take that into account during the movements. The lighter person needs to lean more to counterbalance this. It really comes down to moving as and in a group.’

What are your plans for the future?

Axel: ‘Emmi asked me the same question yesterday. I have the premiere of Through the Grapevine with Alexander at the begin­ ning of October and will continue playing Screws and Red Haired Man, all of them together with Alexander. But I am also thinking about creating my own work. It is still very much in development.

I want to work with bicycles. I am a big fan of mechanics and bicycles. I want to build my own circus bike and use that as the starting point for a show. But I am a floor acrobat, not on a bike.

I can cycle but that is not the same. It will take some time.’

Emmi: ‘For me, I will start a new creation with Alexander in November that will premiere next year. I will also work on two other creations with another company. After that I will need a little holiday.’ (laughs) Screws speelt tot 13 september in KANAL.

A Way of Seeing Rita Hoofwijk John Berger legt in ‘Ways of Seeing’ bloot dat het waar en wanneer we iets zien van invloed is op wat we zien. Voor het TheaterFestival bezoekt Rita Hoofwijk, zelf kunstenaar en verbonden aan SoAP Maastricht, vijf voorstellingen samen met een andere bezoeker en diens manier van kijken.

Ze schrijft niet over de voorstelling zelf, wel over een deel van de context van het theaterbezoek.

A Way of Seeing/ Uit de oude doos

Vandaag: Jezebel van Cherish Menzo / Frascati Producties Het wordt krap. Mijn trein heeft vertraging en ik ga later aankomen dan gepland.

Te laat, om er zoals bij mijn afgelopen theaterbezoeken in het kader van A Way of Seeing ruim op voorhand te kunnen zijn.

Als ik vanaf het station (op hoog tempo) naar het theater wandel, denk ik aan de gesprekken die ik vandaag gevoerd heb.

Ze gingen over mijn eigen werk, dat zich doorgaans niet in het theater afspeelt, alhoewel het zich soms wel ‘voorstelling’ laat noemen.

Als ik aankom bij BRONKS gaan de eerste bezoekers al naar binnen. Het is nog warm buiten. Er staat een groep mensen voor de ingang. Het heeft iets feestelijks. De meesten lijken (extra) aandacht te hebben besteed aan hun voorkomen vanavond.

Velen dragen iets van kleur.

Ik ben te laat om nog een van mijn mede­bezoekers te kunnen observeren en te vergezellen, of misschien is mijn hoofd nog wat vol om goed te kunnen luisteren.

Ik besluit vandaag alleen te kijken. Hoe voel ik mij? Ik heb een beetje honger en ben met mijn gedachten nog ergens anders. Ik heb niet zo’n zin om collega’s tegen te komen en bewust wacht ik een eindje van de groep vandaan om naar binnen te mogen. Ik heb speciaal ver­ zocht over Jezebel te mogen schrijven, omdat ik het graag wil zien. Het was uitverkocht. Meer mensen willen het graag zien. Ik heb een interview met Cherish gelezen en ook een recensie over de voorstelling, maar dat is al even geleden.

Ik weet dat het een solo is.

binnen. Bij de ingang tuurt een medewer­ ker met me naar een lege plaats. Die zijn er genoeg, maar we zoeken er één zonder publiek aan weerskanten. Rechts bovenin blijken er nog een paar plekken vrij en onverwacht tref ik daar ook twee vrien­ den. Het wordt toch nog een gezamenlijk theaterbezoek. Door de speakers klinkt een opgenomen stem die ons in het Engels welkom heet en informatie geeft over de coronarichtlijnen. Dan wordt het donker.

- Ik zie Jezebel – Ze had een mooie manier van buigen.

Ongehaast, alsof ze de tijd wilde nemen even terug te kijken. Zoals ik als laatst naar binnenging, zo sta ik ook als een van de laatste bezoekers weer buiten. Veel anderen zijn al vertrokken, maar ik zie nog een paar vrienden en collega’s staan. Het is niet erg meer. Onze gedachten zijn bij hetzelfde. Mezelf kom ik tegen in de spiegel op de toiletten. Mijn ogen zien er wat klein uit boven het zwarte mondmas­ ker. Ik ben moe, maar tegelijkertijd voel ik me energiek. In mijn hoofd herhaalt zich een melodie uit de voorstelling. Het lichaam heeft zin om te bewegen.

Het TheaterFestival bestaat 30 jaar! Elke dag diepen we een voorstelling die ooit werd geselecteerd op uit het rijke archief.

Mouchette van Arne Sierens Winnaar in 1990 ‘Wie zorgt er voor de mantelzorgers? De helpende hand van Arne Sierens.’ (Humo) ‘Mouchette is “vintage Sierens” en een ode vol klankkleuren aan jonge mantelzorgers die wroeten om thuis en op school overeind te blijven terwijl hun zieke ouders het leven niet de baas kunnen.

Dat klinkt triest, dat is het ook. Maar Sierens transformeert die tristesse met muziek, veel roze licht én een prachtig einde tot vuurrode levenslust.’ (Focus Knack) ‘De opeenvolging van momentopnamen, deze mengeling van gevoelens en gevoeligheden, verleent aan het stuk een zeldzame directheid en kernachtigheid.’ (Europese Toneelschrijfprijs in 1991) ‘Dit is modern volkstheater. Erg fysiek maar ook heel emotioneel.

Het moet herkenbaar zijn en dat is het ook.’ (VRT)

Over 30 jaar Het eerste TheaterFestival vond 30 jaar geleden plaats. Wij blikken vooruit met jonge makers die toen nog in de luiers zaten of niet geboren waren. Hoe zal het theater er volgens hen uitzien in 2050?

Vandaag: Lisaboa Houbrechts, een van de vier jonge makers van P.U.L.S (Toneelhuis), zonder glazen bol maar mét dromerige, maatschappelijke en poëtische gedachten, woord en verbeelding.

‘Ik heb geen glazen bol, dus geen defi nitief antwoord. Maar ik heb wel mijn gedachten’, begint ze. ‘De avond nadat je mij deze vraag voorlegde, droomde ik van een soort onderwater theaterwereld, waar mensen duikpakken moesten aantrekken om naar het theater te gaan. En tussen het reizen van voorstelling naar voorstelling stierven er veel theaterbezoekers.’

Dat laatste klinkt verontrustend, maar wat Lisaboa in de echte wereld zorgwekkend vindt, is de mogelijkheid van artificiële intelligentie om zich te mengen in het theater. ‘Een computer kan via AI meten welke gebieden in de hersenen oplichten bij een ontroeringservaring, en het kan die stimulansen recreëren. Theater is een subjectief gegeven, dus zo’n robot zou voor iedere persoon het ultieme kunstwerk kunnen maken, om zo de ultieme ontroeringservaring te hebben. Ik vind dit een heel depressieve gedachte, een enorm dystopisch toekomstbeeld, maar een dat toch niet totaal onwaarschijnlijk is.’

Maar Lisaboa ziet ook positieve ontwikkelingen. ‘Ik kijk uit naar grotere, verbindende projecten die minder schade toebrengen aan de aarde. Oplossingen zijn bijvoorbeeld minder reizen, minder grote decors. Maar ik hoop gewoon niet dat dit resulteert in kleine, scenisch lege projecten, want ik geloof nog altijd in het grote gebaar.’
