People have many facets… For artists and writers each of our personal compartments informs who we are and what we say, within our work and outside of it. But the contemporary English haiku scene at times runs a perceptible risk in certain places of presenting less constructive strains of conservatism running through its discourse and presentations, perhaps in part resulting from natural associations with an older crowd, a rural crowd, a traditionalist set, which on occasion threatens to eclipse important aspects of our community and their identities. Truman Capote, Oscar Wilde, Andy Warhol, Virginia Woolf, Sidonie -Gabrielle Colette, Sappho are each many things, bring to their respective oeuvres countless mesmerizing aspects and qualities of their captivating personas, the bodies of material the sum of those parts collectively gave rise to. But it would be ludicrous, verging on asinine to consider any of them outside the context of, ignore, gloss over, or dubiously omit the orientations and sexualities intrinsic to understanding their perspectives and rich inner lives, which suffused and galvanized every word they wrote or image they conceived. So it’s somewhat disturbing or at the very least curious, a cynic might argue suspect, that we have here a form and popular practice more or less invented, certainly popularized and mastered by a gay man, introduced and best contemporized in the English tongue by gay and bisexual Beat poets, yet whose practitioners too commonly still tread reticently upon a carpeting of eggshells in terms of touting with pride their personal sexualities, at least in part because of the apparent tacit gag order in academia and polite water cooler discourse that Jack Kerouac had gay sex, Basho was an enthusia stic homosexual, Akiko Yosano visited the isle of Lesbos. In this 21st century, accepting such repressive conventions, playing along with expectations of self -censorship, the tendency to disregard and sidestep, packing our tapdancing shoes and relegating our honest identities, peers and colleagues' true selves underground, banishing them to proverbial closets and crepe beardings makes us grudging participants, complicit with the insidious cancer of fascist intolerance proliferating across our fair lands.
The selfsame scourge on rampant display allowed Europe to stigmatize and ultimately genocide thousands of gays in concentration camps during the second world war. That 2/3 of #LGBTIQA+ people in present day have experienced some variety of hate crime viole nce or abuse relating to their identity is a conclusive indication things still have a long ways to go in this disappointing regard, for our cultures and civilization as a whole both. Poetry may seem trivial, but our haiku community has the capability on a micro scale of leading by example to improve this climate, and foster the change we hope to see in our world. Listen, ask, discuss, learn and please have an open mind. To turn a blind eye, ignore the wonderful contributions directly intersecting with a ve ritable rainbow of diversity our masters represent and encompass, dismiss and overlook their history and identities imbuing seminal foundations of the short forms, is committing a great injustice and grievous error which feeds into the worst possible trend s and outcome. But through incremental progresses, via even the smallest initiatives like this one we can gradually make a meaningful impact and ultimately move mountains, one grain of sand at a time. Many hands make light work, whales can be judiciously consumed only a nibble at a time. Will you join us friends? And through gentle, patient outreach mayhap you can even coax your comrades, neighbors, family, coworkers along for the ride. It's a glorious land we search for, worth relocating to. Let the following provide a humble sextant for navigation...
