Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2026 HESS International Annual English Competence Competition. It was amazing to see many outstanding performances and I was very proud of all of you.
All the students had to practice extremely hard for the competition. We are thankful for the hard-working teachers who helped the students during this time. Also, I would like to say a big thank you to the parents who supported their children and believe in HESS.
The competition is just one format of an activity, the most important thing is that we see the students passion for learning and enable them to do the best they can. It also brings back the love of teaching for the teachers. We believe that this is the foundation of teaching.

As English listening tests become essential for university and high school examinations, the ability to listen and speak English is very important. Languages only become effective when you know how to use them fluently. In addition to professional teaching standards, through activities and competitions, we are able to provide a good learning environment for our students. Our aim is to develop elite international students.
Practice searching, integrating, and organizing information skills, and cleverly utilize presentation technology to make speeches more layered and attractive. In-class exercises also incorporate on-thespot response training, allowing for flexible adjustments of language style and tone based on different situations and audiences, making expressions more natural and fluent.

Charlie is one of the most dedicated students I’ve come to know. He put a lot of effort into speech, but worried that it wouldn’t be good enough. But he persevered through the doubts and worked hard on getting the fundamentals of speech craft correct. In the end, it wasn’t about a flashy presentation, but illustrating to the judges through his emotion why Hong Kong was the place to go.

Over the years that she has competed in speech and presentation competitions, Ana has consistently pushed herself further and further towards better mastery and performance. Going from her experience with speeches to this year, her first year competing in the presentation category, we expected some new challenges for her. We told her that the other students would likely be older and more experienced with presentations. We explained that the content and expectations would be different, and she would need to adjust her preparation accordingly. In true form, none of this mattered. Her ability speaks for itself, and our job became just making sure she appreciates her accomplishment and builds confidence. My role in her achievement is very limited, and it’s honestly inspiring to see someone so young continue driving towards greater heights.
This is my fourth time joining Hess ECC, very first time making it to the finals in Taipei seeing my video on YouTube! When my announced, I was so excited as I walked stage. Since this was my first time using format at ECC, I was actually quite nervous. In the past, I came close to Taipei many always fell short. I felt disappointed, but myself, 'It’s okay! Don’t give up... you can next time!' After the competition, the best our teachers taking us to a great dinner our journey to Taipei! Winning at ECC was challenge, but I’m so proud I did it. I definitely join ECC again next year, and my goal is the first prize!

This was my first time participating in an English presentation contest. At first, I just wanted to have fun and work hard with my classmates. But because my parents and teachers kept encouraging me, I started to take it very seriously. I am so thankful to my teacher, who practiced with me and gave me great advice. I also want to thank my dad; his professional tips helped me a lot. And thank you to my mom, who taught me how to use the right tone and how to vary the pitch of my voice. "No pain, no gain." After a lot of hard work, I finally made it to the national finals! I felt so proud. Even though I didn't place in the top three, I am still happy because I know I tried my best. Making it to the final round in her very first competition is a huge achievement for Tia. After watching her put in the hours, refining her delivery and working through the nerves. Seeing her stand on that stage with such composure was a real highlight. She truly spoke from the heart. To me, ECC is an opportunity for the students to use the language they have learned at HESS to truly communicate. Rather than relying on scripted responses, the students are able to share ideas that they are genuinely passionate about. Dehe Branch exemplifies this for me and I couldn't be more proud of the students that participated. They all gave their absolute best effort and the culmination of their hard work was inspiring. I am constantly in awe of the ability of these students to express themselves in their non-native language. As we reached the end of our journey, I believe we have all learned a lot and we are ready to attack it next year with newfound veracity.
Pierre deserves a huge congratulations for his determination that resulted in making it to the Finals of the Presentation competition this year. Pierre should be proud of himself for the effort he gave creating his presentation. He worked meticulously both in-class and at home to write, edit, and build his speech into something that he felt was acceptable. He really took responsibility for the full creation of his presentation and made sure to make it as personal as possible in order. He did a wonderful job expressing his feelings and grew significantly as a writer, speaker, and presenter during this process. I was also extremely impressed with his ability to take critiques from the numerous students, teachers, and judges that he faced over the course of this competition. I have no doubt that Pierre has an extremely bright future ahead of him. Great job!
Working with Tommy is always an interesting experience because you never know what he will come up with.
He is an exceptionally creative student with a vivid imagination and a strong ability to express his thoughts. What made teaching him especially engaging was his willingness to challenge ideas and thoughtfully debate different points of view. These conversations added originality and personality to his writing, making his speech both appealing and enjoyable to read.
Tommy’s greatest challenge, however, was condensing his many ideas into the limited three-minute speech format. Eager to include every detail, he spoke too quickly. With more practice in organization and pacing, Tommy has the potential to become an outstanding speaker and storyteller.
I never thought that I would have reached of ECC this year and win my first championship trophy of my life. First, this was my joining this annual HESS event. Participating over contests for two years in a row has confidence and bravery on stage, and me less afraid of speaking in English in people.
Secondly, when I participated in the speech for the first time two years ago, I realized not just about delivering a speech. It good control of volume and vocal Therefore, when I participated in the speech again this year, my teachers, Sian, Hazel, helped me correct many weaknesses previous performances.

This year was especially meaningful for me. Watching my student reach the final and go on to win was an incredibly proud moment. His success was not just about talent—it was built on confidence, hard work, and sheer determination. He showed what is possible when a student is willing to keep trying, even when things feel difficult. That kind of perseverance is something I hope all students can learn from.

As a teacher, being part of this journey—from the first practice to the final performance—is incredibly rewarding. Seeing students discover their potential and take pride in their achievements is what makes teaching so meaningful.
Ray's one of those students who comes to school ready to debate every day, so he's matched almost perfectly to this kind of thing. At first, it was impossible for him for him to show any emotion when other than his signature 'grumpy old man', but over time, he started to get more comfortable and figured out his own way to make his speech his. Uin the end, he put in more than enough hard work and it all paid off in the end.
I am truly proud of Damien for earning this award. His achievement comes from dedication, perseverance, and a strong willingness to learn. I would like to thank Tr. Tracy and Tr. Henry because we spent lots of time practicing together before and after my English classes. Even when I made some silly mistakes, they still helped me fix them patiently. I also want to thank my parents. They always support me and cheer me up when I feel nervous or upset. I really like this year’s topic because dancing has always been my first choice in my heart. This is my first time joining a competition, and I am very proud of myself because I know it is not easy to stand on stage and tell my story to everyone here.
Participating in this competition was a great feat for me. From start to finish, I shared my love for sometime simple yet so meaningful to me — French Fries. Through this experience, I learned that even a small topic can bring big joy. Just like French fries, they are simple but can make people smile. This journey showed me that happiness and confidence can come from the smallest moments. Most importantly, it also taught me that success is not just about winning, but about sharing, learning, and truly enjoying the process. Just like I said in my speech, life is short — so enjoy it. This year's 14th ECC was a reminder of how much a young student can improve and achieve when they set their mind on it. Ryan went from a common to a comical choice for his‘Favourite Thing’speech, which I was a little skeptical of when he told me about it. When he returned the following week with a complete speech about his love of French fries, and it was cohesive and humorous, I was surprised. During the remainder of the classes he took constructive feedback to heart, added some extra flair to his body language, and made more and more eye contact as he recited to fellow students and other teachers. I was proud to see him complete the regional competitions and compete in the finals. He worked hard and has a lot to be proud of himself for. It was a pleasure to guide him toward his achievements.
When I finished the speech competition, I was very happy because I won the prize. But I was also pretty sad because I thought I didn't speak very well. Next time, I want to get the first place, and I should try harder. First, I want to thank my teachers because they teach me. Second, I want to thank my parents, without their support, I won't stand on the stage. Last, I want to thank my myself becuase I'm so brave. I wish I can write a better speech next time, and talk more fluently.
When Kevin walked off the stage after completing his speech, Tr. Calvina and I were glowing with pride. He had managed to bring his confidence and natural way of speaking, which we see at school every week, to a much wider audience. Even though getting on stage is daunting for the most experienced competitors, as a first-time entrant he excelled and was able to shine. After much work and practice he showed how much of a great time he was having and was relishing the opportunity to show off his skills. We are so happy with all the effort he put in and I’m sure that next year we’ll see him go far in the competition again.

It provided a platform for learners to express ideas, share perspectives, and build confidence in public speaking. Teaching ECC Voice Over for competition has been such a fun and exciting experience. It gives students the chance to take their English skills to a whole new level by using them in creative and playful ways. Voice over encourages students to step outside their comfort zones and try something new. They learn how to use tone, emotion, and timing to make their English more expressive and meaningful. It’s amazing to see their confidence grow as they practice and perform.
One of the best parts is the teamwork. Students collaborate, share ideas, and support each other throughout the process, making it a truly group effort.
Overall, ECC Voice Over is a fantastic way for students to build stronger speaking skills, deepen their understanding, and have a lot of fun along the way.

Coaching this group for the Voiceover competition was one of the most intense and meaningful experiences of my teaching career. For months, these students gave their time, energy, and heart to something far more demanding than most people realize, and every bit of their success was earned. I watched them grow into an exceptional team, learning to control their voices, express emotion, work together, and perform under pressure.
That is why the national result was so emotional. Second place is an extraordinary achievement, and I am deeply proud of them. At the same time, it was heartbreaking to come so close to first place yet to see another team walk away with it due to a technical difficulty. Still, they proved their worth through resilience, courage, and professionalism. I will remember their growth, hard work, and the pride I felt in leading them throughout this remarkable journey together.

When I was first invited to lead our ECC Voiceover team, I had no idea just how rewarding and fun it would be. Watching experienced teachers share their methods really opened my eyes to what was possible. At the semifinals, my goal was simple: I wanted the students to enjoy the experience and learn from the opportunity. I honestly wasn't even thinking about the finals!
Between the children's fantastic performances on stage and the excitement of Team Taiwan's win over Korea, hearing Dajia called for the finals caught me totally off guard. In the end, going to the Taipei Finals and walking away with third place was beyond anything I imagined! I couldn't be prouder of what we all had achieved!

The ECC competition is a wonderful chance for students to challenge themselves and grow. Throughout the journey, I have seen them practice independently, actively share ideas, and add creativity to their performances. They have become more confident, and their pronunciation has improved so much. I'm really proud to watch their effort and growth shine on stage.
Video over requires a great deal of teamwork. What a teacher can teach students is actually quite limited, but the potential I see in my students is limitless. Thank you to all the students who participated—I am so proud of them.

Dehe students really enjoyed participating in ECC. We talked about key factors like emotion intonation and sound effects that would help them do well in the competition. I believe the students really had a fun time expressing themselves in a fun and creative way in a safe environment. We allowed students to have the creative freedom to choose their characters and group members. We practiced reading the script and then rehearsed the video without sound. After about fifty minutes to an hour we would switch the video. Throughout the last few weeks, students oftentimes struggled staying focused. Positive incentives helped them get back on tract. I believe the students favorite aspect of ECC voiceover was the voice acting. It was something new and silly most of them had never done before with their English. Overall, it was a fun and exciting experience for them.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to teach and grow alongside students like Noah, Mollie, Kitty, and Mina during our voiceover performance class. Teaching this class has been a meaningful experience, as I’ve watched each student build confidence, explore their creativity, and find their unique voice. Their willingness to try, take risks, and support one another made every session enjoyable and inspiring. Noah showed great determination, Mollie brought wonderful energy, Kitty demonstrated thoughtful delivery, and Mina impressed with her steady improvement. Each of them contributed something special to the class dynamic. Thank you for your enthusiasm, hard work, and positive attitudes. You have reminded me why teaching is so rewarding. I hope this experience has helped you grow not only as performers but also as confident communicators. I look forward to seeing how you continue to develop your voices in the future.

It has been another amazing Voiceover Competition experience for our students at Taishan branch. I am so proud of all that Aurora, Jim, Chichi, and Fay accomplished. They grew and improved so much during this process. When they came to class every day, they always brought a positive attitude and a smile on their face. Their ability to believe in themselves, project confidence, and put in the hard work needed really make them a special group of students. I’ve never seen students at this age so comfortable at expressing different emotions and really embodying their characters. Our students did a great job at ECC. I am so proud of each of them. It was wonderful to see them work, laugh,and study as they engaged with the videos and mastered their voices!
When I first started the voice-over challenge, the most difficult part was teaching sound effects from the videos. I give full credit to the students for their hard work in learning and performing them. What I enjoyed most was the creativity and how quickly the students adapted to new groups and videos. I especially liked guiding them to match emotions with characters—hearing them act sad or angry was both fun and engaging, and they truly enjoyed it. The most challenging part remained the sound effects for both myself and the students. Overall, it was a very positive experience, and I’m proud of their effort and focus in achieving success in the Taoyuan competition.

Teaching ECC this year was very rewarding. It was lots of fun to watch the children improve their English skills in a more unconventional way. It helped a lot that our group of students worked hard and put forth their best effort. For me, I was able to do some research and find lots of new ways to teach the children memorization skills and how to express their emotions properly when reading in English. I thought it was intersting to watch the students come up with ways to make the different sounds on top of reciting their lines.

I would like to congratulate Erica, Edison, Eileen and Cindy for their hard work in advancing to Taipei in the ECC Voiceover Contest. It is always exciting when students are motivated to showcase their abilities and take on new challenges. As an English teacher, seeing students having fun using English in a unique setting provides remarkable insights into individuals’ motivations that are not possible in a typical class setting. I was only available for a few classes but in that short time I saw a group willing to come out of their comfort zones as we did warm-up activities and explored new concepts. They were all very supportive of one another and worked well together to reach a common goal. And most importantly, they had a lot of fun participating. All of the groups really enjoyed the videos this year. I hope to see you all participate again next year.
