Develop excellent, comprehensive English skills
As English listening tests become essential for university and high school examinations, the ability to listen and
speak English is very important. Languages only become effective when you know how to use them fluently. In addition to professional teaching standards, through activities and competitions, we are able to provide a good learning environment for our students. Our aim is to develop elite international students.
Speech Competition
The speech competition is a lot more behind to give a good speech. Students have to write the speech, they have brainstorm the ideas and they have to think of the logical way to deliver their messages.
Mini Musical Competition
Mini Musical competition gives students the opportunity to have fun and show their confidence. Students are able to learn from each other and gain interests in learning English.

I want to share the honor with them. Several months ago Teacher Tracy recommended that
I take part in this competition. I didn't have
the experience of speaking to public in English so I decided to try. I prepared materials about
Hitler's past for my speech on "Change the past". I might not change Hitler's past but this award could change my future.
在 Tracy 老師的推薦下，Robert 參加了今年
「驚奇之旅」，從賽前的訓練課程到分校賽、區域
學習的興趣及愛好，Robert 一直都不怕苦的全心
投入，加上 Teacher Dane, Ariane 和 Tracy 老師 特別撥出時間加強指導，最後終於取得佳績。想要
自然且得體的對群眾用英語演說，對大人來說都不
是一件容易的事，何況是未滿 14 歲的孩子？然而 我看到他透過練習的過程，汲取比賽上台的經驗，
在每次比賽中都有進步，最後能夠呈現自然而生動 的演說，不管最後名次如何，我相信這段過程都將
成為每個參賽者未來寶貴的資產。其次，在每次的 比賽中，可以看到來自各分校參賽者精采的表現，
每個人都有自己獨特的長處，而且把自己的長處發 揮得淋漓盡致，藉由學習他人的優點也可以提昇自
己的表現。感謝 HESS 費心舉辦這樣的比賽，讓全 國 HESS 的學員共聚一堂，切磋琢磨，期待未來有 更多的孩子參與，勇於嘗試，一同提升英語力。

Teaching the HESS English Competence Competition speech class is always a fun and rewarding
experience. It's such a pleasure to see what fun and interesting ideas the students come up with. This year's topic If I could Change the Past was a particularly compelling topic and it certainly produced a pantheon of great topics and even better speeches. It was an
amazing experience to guide our students through each stage of the competition—
from the initial lessons, to the branch and area competitions, and finally to the
finals—to share their eagerness and enthusiasm and their joy and elation with success. Congratulations to all the students and see you next year!

績，從這次比賽除了學到了勇氣，更是超越了最好
與進步，在練習過程中，Ulia 盡自己最大的努力不
知道“天下沒有白吃的午餐”，每個禮拜一和禮拜
自己的能力，比賽當天難掩緊張，但在大家的加油
我從沒想過我能在比賽中得到第二名的好成

HESS International Annual English Competence Competition in 2020 has been one wonderful experience for me, Ulia has been well-prepared
for every practice day throughout the week and she kept on improving not only with her
speaking abilities but also with her confidence to perform her speech, not only in front of her
class but also in front of other older classes. Being so well-prepared I just had to motivate her to build her beliefs and self-confidence. Ulia did great at the competition and myself and the rest of the staff at HESS Zhongli are so proud of her. (Tiaan)

從小看姐姐參加演講比賽游刃有餘的樣子，都
不覺得進入決賽有什麼大不了的，直到後來自己參
加了 Sing and Dance，還有之後的 Speech 才知 道進入決賽是一件非常不容易的事。
在那之後的三次演講比賽我都把總決賽的門
檻當成最終目標－直到這次。在報名前，老師要我
把野心放到最大，但心態放到最低的狀態去參加這 場比賽。心態放低讓我不那麼在意成敗、野心放大
讓我充滿自信。也是得到現在的名次後才明白自己 完成了多大的目標。
一路以來我感謝我的家長、感謝我的老師、也
感謝我自己。
謝謝我的家長在背後莫大的支持及鼓勵； 謝謝我的老師不遺餘力的指導；

每次的比賽，坐在台下，看著台上的孩子們都
可以不疾不徐的完美呈現，時間掌控在最完美的秒 數結束，每每都覺得很佩服很感動！那是要多少的
練習跟多大的抗壓性！而且在比賽中，Catherine 學會觀察其他選手們的優缺點，推算自己的贏面跟 勝算，適時修正呈現的方式，和面對比賽壓力的心 態，不管是能力上或是心境上的成長，都很令人感

can express myself. Through the words that I
speak, it can let people understand me more. And leading students to reach this goal is a great
task for me because speech is not just a daily conversation, it is more like an official statement for people to know you.
In the past three years, it was my great

在挑戰何嘉仁英語演講比賽的分校初賽時，
我抱著滿滿的自信踏上了初賽的舞台，並且如願的
晉級至南區決賽；在挑戰南區決賽時，我懷著「必 須晉級至冠軍總決賽」的心態，站上了決賽的舞
台，也如願以償的晉級。在挑戰冠軍總決賽時，我 心想：我終於站上了這光榮的舞台……這是一個試 煉自己的好機會，我要好好把握！當評審開始公布 結果時，評審念到傑出內容獎時，我的心中一半是
高興自己得了名，另一半是在 Regret，後悔著「即 興看圖演說」沒有好好發揮……不過，當我整理好

心情後，覺得這次沒有前三名沒有關係，至少我學

I spent a lot of time practicing my speech.
I won the Outstanding Delivery Award at the end. I'm actually very happy, but a little bit sad at the same time. I didn't get the results that I
wanted, but I know I've done a good job. I want
to thank my two teachers. They spent a lot of time practicing with me, and they also told me that I have already challenged myself. I still get
touched with the results. I also thank HESS for holding this competition which I have chance
to stand on the stage confidently, and sharing my story to everyone. Finally, I hope that I'll

Hi, I'm Annabelle. I'm very happy to join the ECC Competition. I still can't believe I got into the natoinal championship. I want to say thank you to all of the people who supported and encouraged me. Without you, I wouldn't be in the national championship. This is my first time to join this competition. My friend introduced me to participate in the competition. At first, I refused. But when I saw the poster, I was so impressed! "You won't lose anything if you try it." I said to myself. It was hard at the beginning. Everytime when I want to give up, the poster came to my mind, which gave me power to move on. After knowing I was in the national championship, I practiced harder. I'm a little upset that I didn't get the first, second or third place. But I finally took courage to join the ECC competition, I feel like that I move a step forward to succeed. Thank you.

I think it's very hard to adventure the final contest. I've only had one opportunity to stand for Hsinchu area. If you ask me how could I able to stand for Hsinchu to go to the final competition, I would say"Because practice makes perfect." This year, Teacher Laila is my teacher for speech class. She gave me some ideas, good suggestions and the most important thing- facial expression. At the Final competition, I saw lots of people who were full of experience. Although I practiced a lot, I still didn't win any place. My teacher told me "That's ok. If you learn something from the competition, that’s perfect." I want to say thank you to my teachers and parents. With your support, I am brave and confident.

Jimmy is a natural performer. Working with him to prepare for the speech competition was very easy because he already has good instincts when it comes to public speaking. Since he had participated in the competition the previous year, Jimmy was familiar with the rules and structure of the competition. This allowed us to focus our time on practicing his delivery of the speech, as well as Picture Prose. We challenged Jimmy to think more about how his facial expressions impact his performance. While this was a little difficult for him, he really developed his facial expressions and used them to enhance his speech. We also helped him focus on his pronunciation, and pushed him to focus on his stressing the consonants in words. Any feedback he got, he immediately would make changes to improve his speech. Jimmy was dedicated and passionate about the competition. Overall, as his teachers, we are all very proud of Jimmy.

習 Picture Prose，每次必定是一番苦戰。一開始比
上誰不想要改變過去呢？不論是過去後悔的事物、最
家的面前進行演說。儘管結束時，大家都鼓勵我表現
的某個歷史事件裡，成為改變一切的人！陪著孩子從
這次參賽確實很辛苦，不論是撰寫草稿，或是練
分校賽時真的讓人非常緊張，畢竟是第一次正式在大
地非常好，但我卻很不以為然，因為我知道自己有表 現不好的地方，Picture Prose 的演說時間甚至未達
標準，而我又是個完美主義者，這對我來說確實是很 大的打擊。之後，在執念與老師的鼓舞之下一切漸入 佳境，終於得以在區域賽中脫穎而出，繼而參加全國
賽。雖然在全國賽中沒有拔得頭籌，但卻收穫滿滿， 果然不虛此行，儘管準備過程很辛苦，但所謂：「吃
的苦中苦，方為人上人」，如果希望是花朵，那參賽
這次的 Speech 主題非常有趣─改變過去─這世
尷尬的一瞬間、最想挽回的東西，又或者是回到過去 眾多選擇中挑選想寫的主題是最難的一個環節，因為
每個故事都是如此精彩，而最終，我們選擇最貼近生 活的題目─改變自己的過去。演講最吸引人的地方， 就是透過文筆以及口語表達，分享自己的觀點和看
法，看見孩子們能夠自信滿滿的站在台上，流暢自如 地述說著自己創作出來的故事， 真的非常引人入勝！
過程就是一條布滿鮮花的道路，也在我的成長路上開 出了更多璀璨的花蕊。

這是我第二次參加何嘉仁英語力大賽，第一次
的參賽，因為當天聲音沙啞而被淘汰。有了前車之
鑑，這次老師們指導我可以用上次聲音沙啞的經驗來 發揮這次的講稿內容，我將我的沙啞嗓音比喻為家子 叫聲，沒想到一路過關斬將，從初賽晉級到總決賽 !
總決賽令我大開眼界，原來和我一樣在各地區
脫穎而出的選手也個個都是強者。然而我覺得這次比 賽中我表現得比較不理想的部分是看圖說故事比賽， 要在短短的二十分鐘思考出符合圖片的劇情，進而連 貫成一篇生動的故事，對我來說真的是一大挑戰。

I've been lucky enough to work with Lucas in speech class over the past two years, and he has grown so much since the beginning. In both years, he worked hard to ensure that his speech was excellent. I'm especially proud of his effort to make it to Taipei this year because his speech "career" has not been an easy one. After narrowly missing out on the South Area Finals last year, no one would have blamed him for not returning. But he came back, worked on his areas of weakness, and took his speech to the next level. He showed great maturity and dedication to achieving his goal. 本次指導孩子們參加 Mini Musical，過程中充滿
歡樂。最初，大家都對故事不甚熟悉；後來，和孩子 們一起討論適合的角色，多次嘗試將歌詞套進旋律之

「微音樂劇試鏡就在下禮拜，將會選出對微音
儘管最終的結果並不如預期那麼好，但在訓練的
樂劇具有熱忱、興趣的學生，報名請儘快。」沒想到

Mini-musical is a great way for the students
to experience English in a new light. It let's them
be flamboyant while still working towards a goal
"normal" way. The students had a lot of fun and as well. There was a lot more freedom and
creativity in the process and the end result was a collaboration of everyone involved, even the students. Overall, it was a good experience for all the people involved and we all walked away with a better understanding of each
other. I'm happy that I got to

Ariel did a great job in her role during the musical She dedicated herself to learning her lines and really gave it her all in every performance. Lily gave an excellent performance in this year's musical. She was energetic and enthusiastic during the rehearsals, and she carried that same spirit into the competition. Cinderella was the perfect choice for the lead role in this year's mini-musical. She was excited to start acting before each performance. She has a bright future ahead of her! Ian was a joy to have in this year's minimusical! He spoke loudly and with lots of energy. He was never shy to perform and always gave it everything he had.

Melody helped out so much with this our school's mini-musical this year! Each week, she was eager to rehearse. She brought that same enthusiasm to the competition, which helped us advance to the final round! Isabelle was always attentive during the rehearsals and she was an invaluable actress during our performances. I think she really enjoyed being a part of our production! Emma gave an excellent performance in the mini musical this year. She always tried her best and helped out the other kids whenever it was necessary.

The establishment of this competition has given our students an opportunity to explore their creative and fun side. The first day I met the students who entered the competition I could just see how excited they were. They were ready to do something they have never done before and were beyond eager to get started. I knew in that moment that it is my responsibility as their teacher to do everything I can to ensure their expectations are met as far as possible. 這次英語力大賽因為疫情的關係，時間拉了比

往年多很多。猶記得去年開始要準備音樂劇時，就有

students in the ECC program. It was so rewarding
ECC competition. I think it is really a great way
and enthusiasm that the kids brought to the
