Letter from the Head of School
We had another incredible year at Heschel, and we have each of you to thank! This last year’s theme was “Capture the Moment” and I hope this Annual Report gives you a glimpse into what makes Heschel so special. It is our students first and foremost, it is our faculty and staff, it is our parents and grandparents, it is our past parents and our alumni that represent all parts of the tapestry of our rich 51 year long history. We are grateful for the continued support from our community in all of our philanthropic efforts, and especially grateful to our current families, our faculty and staff, and our Board of Directors for reaching 100% participation in this year’s Heschel Fund. There is no better feeling than seeing that we all support our community, and we do it together. I take pride in the fact that Heschel is a dynamic school; a place of academic strength, Jewish values, warmth, and wonder where we encourage our students to think independently and critically, and always strive to be lifelong learners with an immense amount of self-awareness and compassion. Our students are thriving, succeeding, and growing into confident Jewish citizens of the world. May we continue to capture our moments of joy, laughter, and growth! Larry Kligman Head of School
Letter from the Board President
As I finish up my fifth, and final year as the President of the Board of Directors, and my 10th year as a parent, I am in constant awe of how special of a place Heschel is, and how it has evolved and grown during my time as President. I want to thank the entire administration, faculty, staff, board, parents, the Parent Org, and students for always coming together and contributing in order to create a thriving community. I am deeply grateful for our faculty and staff, the backbone of our school, who painstakingly teach our children to be better students and people. To the Board of Directors, past and present, I have learned so much from each of you. Your wisdom, guidance, and long hours have enabled the school to be in the position it is today - growing and thriving. To me, Heschel means community. I am often told by people outside of Heschel how fortunate we are to have such an amazing community. I always respond the same way. It has nothing at all to do with luck. It is hard work. It is the hard work of everyone to ensure that every new family feels welcomed, that every event is planned so well, and that everyone feels a sense of belonging. At Heschel, we have created a community that allows everyone to make lifelong friends and feels as if it is their home away from home. While this has been the most exceptional experience, I am thrilled for Melanie Cohen to take on the role of President of the Board for the 2023-2024 School Year. I know she will take this school to new heights. Thank you for the opportunity to help lead this community — I look forward to all there is to come next year! Doran Tajkef President, Board of Directors
Professional Development The sessions I took as part of the Neurodevelopment Teaching & Learning Institute broke down learning styles, strengths, and tendencies in a brand new manner. By participating in the program, I was able to discover ways in which to target the learning needs of my students in a specific, focused fashion.
During Covid, our classrooms were transformed into spaced out traditional seating for small cohorts of eleven children. After working with Lindsay Astor Grant on executive functioning, it was so refreshing to get some old furniture from storage and create new alternative seating. The children love the variety of spaces and are finding what works best for them.
NCTM gave concrete ideas and examples that I had already implemented into my classroom practice right away! It also helped that I had my whole department with me to bounce ideas off of and learn from other sessions they attended.

Over the summer I attended the Exeter Humanities West PD, where we learned about transforming our method of class discussion with the Harkness pedagogy. It has been incredibly successful! Harkness is an entirely student-centered, studentdriven method of class discussion, where the students take ownership of the direction of the discussion and their roles as productive, supportive members. It has been tremendously gratifying watching them self-regulate as they dig into the texts in both English and history! Middle School English Teacher

Working with Lindsay Astor Grant was very informative and extremely beneficial. We looked at the classroom environment to see how to better assess student learning and create new learning spaces. Setting up the learning environment differently and creating these new spaces enable us to better support students’ learning and growth. My sessions with her were excellent and made me look at my classroom environment with new eyes. 1st Grade Elementary School Teacher

Letter from the Parent Org President
As the Parent Organization (PO) President for the past two years, I am grateful for the awesome opportunity to partner with the volunteers, families and faculty, creating purposeful and fun community events. When I started my journey as a Heschel parent, I immediately knew that volunteering and contributing to the growth and success of parent engagement and PO contributions was essential. Reflecting on the past two wonderful years as PO President, I have learned, I have grown, I have laughed, I have smiled and overall I have been in awe of the unwavering dedication and support of the community. The 2022-2023 school year saw a return to meaningful and fun engagement for the Heschel community. The PO strives to provide opportunities for all levels of community and volunteer participation! With the support of the outstanding Heschel staff and parent volunteers, the PO spearheaded, coordinated and accomplished a wealth of events. • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Looking back on our accomplishments, I am elated at the unwavering dedication and collaboration of the Heschel staff, parent volunteers and families. I know we have an extraordinary leader in Marcy Tajkef (20232024 PO President) and she will continue to provide us with the vision and guidance the Heschel PO needs moving forward. My husband, Stephen (’88) is a Heschel alum, and along with our four children, Sophie (’20) Ezra (‘22), Maya (‘23) and Lila (‘25), we are overwhelmed with joy for the integral part that Heschel has played for our family for the past 12 years. We look forward to our continued involvement and commitment with the Heschel community. Warm Regards, Kim Schwarz, President, Parent Org
Middle School Generation’s Day We welcomed our middle school grandparents and grandfriends to join their students for classroom activities and a special Shabbat celebration.
8th Grade Israel Trip Our 8th graders spent nine days in Israel in the Spring, where they got to explore the history, culture, people, diversity, food, and religious makeup of the beautiful country. This trip is an incredible way for them to live out their education at Heschel outside of the classroom, and in turn leave with a stronger sense of their own Jewish identity and connection to Israel.
RoboHawks Robotics Team We had 17 elementary school students and 7 middle school students on our JV and Varsity Robotics Teams! Our teams won the Teamwork Challenge and Design Award and our Varsity Team participated in 5 competitions, and placed third at the State Championships!

Milken Award Larry Kligman was named one of four prestigious Milken Family Foundation Jewish Educator Award winners for the 2022-2023 School Year. This was not only an incredible honor for Larry but a testament to our Heschel community and the values we hold so dear. Heschel is proud that 12 of our educators have now been recognized with this tremendous honor since 1990. This award is given out yearly to outstanding Jewish day school educators and administrators who exemplify the mission of a Jewish day school education through their leadership, relationships with families and the community, and for their impact on the education and development of students. We are grateful to the BJE and the Milken Family Foundation for the support they provide Heschel and all BJE-affiliated schools to reward our talented educators for the significant contributions they make to the Jewish community and to the world.
Math League Award Our 3rd-5th grade math competition team participated in the Math League Competition outside of school. It was wonderful to see our Heschel students so excited to be doing math on the weekend. They competed both individually and in grade-level teams. Ten of our students took home a trophy, but we are most proud of their sportsmanship, teamwork, and effort. Most importantly, fun was had by all.
Heschel Gala Our “Spring it Forward” Gala was a night filled with celebration and laughter as we honored Marcy (‘93) & Doran Tajkef for their incredible contributions to Heschel, as well as Nancy & Dan (‘83) Pardo with the Community Service Award. The night felt complete with comedian, Modi’s hilarious comedy set, and with music to dance the night away.
Golf Tournament Our inaugural Swing “Fore” Heschel Golf Tournament was a fun day of community building, friendly competition, and philanthropy all in support of Heschel! All money raised helped to provide the foundation for Heschel to instill students with a love of learning, Jewish values, and a sense of responsibility to Tikkun Olam (repairing the world).
Benefactor’s Dinner Thank you to our generous donors who contributed $2,500 or more to the 2022-2023 Heschel Fund.
Chesed Project We are thrilled that our TK-5th graders raised a total of $5,000 throughout the school year all in support of the following organizations: Beit Issie Shapiro, LACFD (LA County Fire Department), the TRZ Food Pantry, the Shalom Institute, School on Wheels, Guide Dogs of America, and LA Jewish Health.
