The RSL Group has entered 2026 at full flight, with some exciting times ahead.
It's been a hectic few months with Christmas, New Year's Eve, Australia Day, and a packed calendar of live shows and entertainment.
A big thank you to our patrons who dined with us on Christmas Day.
We welcomed 660 bookings at the RSL and enjoyed sold-out lunches at both The Clubhouse Hervey Bay and Salt Café.
A very special thank you must go to our staff, who did a tremendous job making the day so special for our guests while giving up their own Christmas morning.
It was exciting to welcome members of the Brisbane Lions AFL Club to the RSL last month as part of their back-to-back tour of Queensland.
Lots of patrons took the opportunity to have a photo holding the 2024 and 2025 Premiership Cups.
I'm sure the opportunity will be memorable for our members, especially those who are diehard footy fans. Looking ahead, we are anticipating a busy couple of months with St Patrick's Day, Easter, and Anzac Day celebrations and commemorations.
The Anzac Day Commemoration Service at Freedom Park on April 25 will see large numbers of veterans and community members gather to pay their respects in remembrance of the fallen and our exservice men and women.
Our Club honours and gives thanks to all veterans who have served in our armed services and pays respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
We look forward to hosting our veterans for a Gunfire Breakfast following the Dawn Service, followed by a luncheon after the main service. Veterans wishing to attend either event can register their attendance at Sub-Branch on Level 2.
March 9 will mark the anniversary of the floods. While we would have liked to see repairs completed by now, unfortunately there have been ongoing delays.
ANZAC DAY
That said, I am pleased to share that we are now on the downhill run.
The TAB refurbishment, reception area, and foyer flooring are all complete and looking fantastic.
New memorabilia cabinets are nearing completion, and Sub-Branch will work hard to return their treasured keepsakes to display.
We sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of our members and guests while these works have been carried out.
In very exciting news for the growth of the RSL Group, the Hervey Bay RSL Club Committee has announced the Club's next acquisition - BIGSCREEN Cinemas in Hervey Bay.
This is a profitable, long-standing business with excellent opportunities for cross-promotion, along with functions and events between the RSL and the Cinemas.
Looking ahead, the aim is to continue to offer family-friendly pricing while maintaining the cinema's reputation for screening the latest releases and providing a dedicated space for relaxation and an immersive experience that simply can't be replicated at home.
If you see me around the Club, please feel free to stop and say hello.

HONOURING ANZAC HISTORY
THE Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch and Hervey Bay RSL Memorial Club are proud to support the passing down of wartime history to 28 Urangan State High School students who will embark on an Anzac-themed tour of Europe in early April.
Educating younger generations about war and conflict is vital, as wartime experiences have significantly shaped human history.
Veterans believe that sharing history alongside their own lived experiences helps students gain a deeper understanding of the realities and atrocities of war, ensuring lessons are learned and never repeated.
Remembrance also honours the more than 103,000 Australians who have lost their lives in conflicts and peacekeeping missions, as well as the families who have endured profound loss.
To support this important educational opportunity, the RSL Sub-Branch and Memorial Club have jointly funded a $17,700 grant to assist with the cost of the tour to the Somme region in northern France.
Students from Years 10, 11 and 12 will
take part in immersive historical learning, visiting World War I battlefield sites, trenches and memorials.
The itinerary includes Villers-Bretonneux, the Australian National Memorial, the Sir John Monash Centre, Heilly Station Cemetery, Pozières and the Thiepval Memorial.
The tour will also take students to the far reaches of the Somme region to visit the battlefields around Mont St Quentin where Australian soldiers found themselves in the final weeks of the war.
Before departing, students will meet with Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch veterans at Freedom Park, where they will hear firsthand accounts of military service and wartime experiences.
The tour will be led by Urangan State High School teachers Kimberly Vanzetta and Michelle Pipe, who served seven years in the Royal Australian Air Force and comes from a strong family military background.
“We are very excited to take the students on this tour to provide a meaningful connection to the Australian experience of World War I,” Ms Pipe said.
“It will also allow students to connect with the story of a local World War I soldier who died and is buried in the
Somme region of the Western Front.
“It is hoped students will return with a greater appreciation of the sacrifice and traditions behind Anzac Day and Remembrance Day commemorations.
“We are incredibly grateful to the RSL Sub-Branch and Memorial Club for their support.”
Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch Secretary Brad Gray, Memorial Club President Ray Eustace and Vice President Ian Cox recently visited the school to present students with their distinctive tour shirts.
Mr Eustace shared his experience serving in the Australian Army during the Vietnam War and later touring the Gallipoli Peninsula.
“It was a powerful experience, and from my perspective, if I had been serving at that age during World War II, I don't believe I would have survived,”
Mr Eustace said.
“It is a privilege to assist the school in keeping our wartime history alive and to help provide students with a meaningful connection to the stories of the Western Front.”
Upon their return, the school plans to apply for a Saluting Their Service

to Hervey Bay Basketball’s Boys U18 Teal, Boys U18 Purple, and Girls U18 teams for making it to the recent State Championships on the Gold Coast.

grant to install a memorial on school grounds, and students will prepare submissions for the Anzac Day Schools Awards competition.
WHALE OF A TIME CARNIVAL SUCCESS
ONE of the most highly anticipated events on the Urangan Ladies Bowls Club Ladies Section calendar, the Whale of a Time Carnival attracted 128 bowlers from across Queensland.
The Hervey Bay RSL was proud to sponsor the carnival, contributing $2,000 in prize money for the winning teams.
The event was one of four carnivals supported through the RSL Community Grants Program this year, with a total of $5,000 provided to help host the Lorikeet and Major Minor Carnivals, as well as the club's 50th anniversary carnival.
Teams from Bargara had plenty to celebrate, claiming the overall win and securing runner-up positions across the two-day event.
Congratulations to everyone involved in hosting such a successful and enjoyable carnival.
KICKING GOALS FOR LOCAL CLUBS
THE Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program continues to invest in the region’s sporting community, providing major Platinum Sponsorships across a range of sporting codes this season.
The RSL Donations Committee recognises the important role grassroots sporting clubs play in bringing people together. These clubs enrich lives, encourage teamwork, and provide safe, supportive environments where players can enjoy staying active and playing the sports they love.
In support of this, the Club has committed more than $30,000 to the Hervey Bay RSL Seagulls Rugby League Club for the 2026 season, along with $20,000 to Bay Power Australian Football Club across the 2025 and 2026 seasons.
The Hervey Bay RSL is also a major sponsor of Hervey Bay Basketball and a foundation sponsor of the new basketball stadium. Additional support includes new marquees for Hervey Bay Hockey, First Aid Kids resources for Bay Bullets Netball, equipment for the Hervey Bay Swimming Club, and numerous
SPACE TO CREATE
A NEW carport under construction at the Burrum District Men’s Shed will provide a safe and practical workspace for members to let their creative juices flow.
The not-for-profit organisation received assistance from the Qantas Regional Grants Program to purchase the carport and a $1500 sponsorship from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program to pay the certification costs.
individual junior sporting grants supporting Wide Bay Queensland and Australian representative selections.
Seagulls President Sam Schooth described the financial support as invaluable, with funding directed towards playing kits, ground maintenance, development programs, 600 water bottles, playing vouchers, and more.
More than 600 players are expected to register for the 2026 season.
“The RSL sponsorship ensures participants across all age groups, from Under 6s through to A-Grade Men, can play Rugby League each week, access highly trained coaches, and enjoy wellmaintained facilities,” Sam said.
“With the generous support of the RSL, we can continue to keep registration costs low, making Rugby League accessible for families throughout
Grants Coordinator John Laffin said the new shaded area will allow members to comfortably and safely work on larger projects, like the incredible guitar pictured.
Talented members used their woodworking, woodturning and signwriting skills to create this three-metre guitar at the request of a music store in Bowen.
John said these activities are only made possible through the generous support of organisations like the Hervey Bay RSL.
“The carport will strengthen the shed's role as a safe, inclusive, and productive hub where members share skills, support one another, and contribute to the resilience and well being of the community,” John said.
“It will also increase the shed's capacity to take on and complete a greater number of community projects for local schools, charities and community groups.
“The guitar project was an interesting challenge, employing the skills of several members.”
our community.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Hervey Bay RSL as our naming rights partner again in 2026 and look forward to another great season with their ongoing support.”
Bay Power AFC Sponsorship Officer
Matthew Schlein said the $20,000 sponsorship plays a vital role in helping the club meet essential costs, including uniforms, equipment, facility maintenance, and competition expenses.
“This support allows Bay Power AFC to focus on what matters most — providing a positive, safe, and inclusive environment where players of all ages and abilities can develop their skills and enjoy being part of the club,” Matthew said.
“This partnership makes a meaningful

A heartfelt thank you to all Hervey Bay RSL members, guests, and staff. Your ongoing support enables the Club to continue giving back and make a lasting difference in our local community.
HOWZAT FOR A SELECTION
DEDICATION to his sport has seen Hervey Bay’s Hamilton Suter earn selection to represent Queensland at the recent National Cricket Championships in Ballarat.
The talented young cricketer travels regularly to Brisbane during the winter off-season to further his training, a commitment that was clearly reflected in his performances with the 10–12year-old schoolboys' team.
Batting at number four for Queensland, Hamilton enjoyed a standout carnival, highlighted by an impressive 52 off 35 balls against South Australia and a rapid 19 off just nine deliveries in a T20 match against the Northern Territory.
Hamilton was supported by the RSL through a Junior Individual Sporting Grant, which assisted with the costs of the entry levy, uniform, and accommodation.
Keep the good wickets coming, Hamilton!
CELEBRATING INCLUSION
AN UNFORGETTABLE night of live music, dancing and celebration was enjoyed at the 2025 Fraser Coast Ability Ball.
The event has grown into one of the region's most anticipated galas, bringing together local disability groups to celebrate inclusion and uplift people of all abilities.
FRESH START FOR OUTRIGGER FLEET
THE Fraser Coast Outrigger Canoe Club completed a successful refurbishment project made possible through the support of the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants.
The $5000 grant provided muchneeded financial assistance to restore and upgrade the club’s fleet of canoes, ensuring they remain safe, seaworthy, and competition-ready for years to come.
The canoes underwent essential repairs including re-fibre glassing of worn out and damaged part of the hulls, repainting and polishing, and the inner hulls painted with non-skid materials.
Secretary Josie Lategan said the improvements have not only enhanced the performance and appearance of the canoes but have also extended their lifespan, representing a sustainable investment in the club's equipment.
“The refurbishment project has had a positive impact on all members, from seasoned paddlers to newcomers, by improving training conditions and safety standards.
“The upgraded canoes are now regularly used for club sessions and interclub competition.
“On behalf of our members, the Fraser Coast Outrigger Canoe Club sincerely thanks the Hervey Bay RSL for its valuable contribution, which has supported the ongoing growth of outrigger paddling in our community and helped ensure our club can continue to promote teamwork, fitness, and cultural connection through the sport.”
The evening was proudly hosted by Community Lifestyle Support and sponsored by the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program, which provided a $3,200 grant to cover venue hire and the evening's delicious meals.
The RSL is proud to announce it will continue as a major sponsor of the Fraser Coast Ability Ball in both 2026 and 2027.
Ability Ball Events Manager Trevor Sands described the evening as exceptional.
“Our collaboration with the RSL team, from the initial planning stages through to the conclusion of the event, was a truly outstanding experience,” Mr Sands said.
“Community Lifestyle Support is honoured to bring this event to the Fraser Coast and looks forward to continuing this cherished tradition for many years to come.”
Mr Sands said the ball continues to serve as a community-wide celebration, offering an evening of fun and dancing while also providing guests the opportunity to engage with special guest stars from Home and Away, who have supported the initiative for the past seven years.
The dance floor remained full throughout the night, with guests' smiles lighting up the room.
Organisers are already looking forward to hosting the Ability Ball again next year.
TURNING SUNSHINE INTO SAVINGS
FOR a not-for-profit organisation running model trains, electronic workshops, model engineering projects and air conditioning, electricity costs can be a major concern.
That pressure has been eased for the Fraser Coast Men's Shed thanks to a $6,000 Community Grant from the Hervey Bay RSL, which funded the installation of a solar system on the shed's roof.
Trusted Solar generously installed the system at a reduced rate, and it is large enough to generate sufficient credits to cover the group's power bills.
The arrival of the first electricity bill brought smiles to members' faces and welcome relief to the group's fundraising account.
“Members were concerned that the two air-conditioning units recently installed at our shed would significantly increase our power consumption, making electricity our biggest expense,” member Laurie Hunt said.
“Now, our entire power bill has been wiped out, freeing up valuable funds that can be used for the benefit of our members and the continued development of our shed.”
Laurie said the Men's Shed provides a welcoming space where men and women can come together to collaborate on meaningful projects with like-minded people, while enjoying plenty of laughter, banter and the opportunity to form lasting friendships.
With a strong focus on model railways and electronics, the savings generated by the solar system will allow the group to expand its offerings to include activities such as 3D printing and laser engraving.
“It means a great deal to our members to have access to engaging activities at the shed - whether they are using skills developed over a lifetime or learning something completely new,” Laurie said.
“This fosters a strong sense of achievement and self-worth.”
The Fraser Coast Men’s Shed is located on the Uniting Church grounds on Exeter Street, Torquay. Find them on Facebook to learn more.

LUCAS MAKES HIS MARK ON QLD SPORT
Thanks to a Junior Individual Sporting Grant from the Hervey Bay RSL, the 11-year-old was able to compete in five state championships, representing Wide Bay in a variety of sports.
Lucas, who plays rugby for the Hervey Bay RSL Seagulls Rugby League Club and cricket for Hervey Bay, was selected for five representative teams in the U12 age group in 2025.
His journey took him across Queensland, testing his endurance, skill, and leadership every step of the way.

season with a local aqua-solo event in Hervey Bay.
The race involved two 1km runs and a 200-metre ocean swim.
Despite calling it one of the hardest things he's ever done, Lucas said he loved the challenge and that it set the tone for the rest of his season.
In AFL, he represented Wide Bay at the state championships on the Sunshine Coast. Competing against teams from across Queensland, Wide Bay won half their pool games and finished eighth overall.

Talor McGill has spent the past four years training tirelessly for the opportunity to earn a place at the Australian Martial Arts Championships. Her dedication at Bayside Martial Arts paid off when she was selected to represent Australia at the championships in Japan.
The 15-year-old delivered an outstanding performance, bringing home two thirdplace finishes and a second-place result.

him to Brisbane for the Wide Bay U11 championships. Playing as first receiver (halfback) and serving as vice-captain, he scored two tries at the carnival and helped the team remain competitive throughout the week.
Next, Lucas and his mum travelled to Roma for the state touch football carnival. Wide Bay finished ninth out of 12 teams.
Most recently, Lucas was selected as an opening bowler for the Wide Bay U12 cricket team, playing in Bundaberg, where he impressed by taking six wickets during the carnival, capping off an
incredible year of sport.
Lucas's dad, Mark Ferguson, said participating in five state championships comes with significant costs, including levies, uniforms, fuel, and accommodation.
“The Hervey Bay RSL's community grant eased the financial burden, allowing Lucas and his family to focus on the competitions and enjoy the experience without worrying about logistics,”
Mark said.
“The grant made these trips possible and helped Lucas grow as an athlete and a person.”
A big congratulations to the following athletes who have been supported by Junior Individual Sporting Grants.
Gabriella Price
Gabriella Price dedicated herself to the pool, swimming laps morning and night with a single goal in mind: to represent her state on the Queensland Representative School Sport team. Her hard work paid off in a thrilling achievement late last year, when the 11-year-old dove into the Ballarat Aquatic and Lifestyle Centre pool to compete against some of the country's toughest young swimmers.
Gabriella's determination shone as she smashed two personal bests in the butterfly and 200m Individual Medley, finishing with impressive placings of fifth, sixth, and two seventh positions.
Supporting her journey, a $500 Junior Individual Sporting Grant helped Gabriella's family cover travel expenses and competition entry fees, making her statelevel dream a reality.
Lincoln Davis
Hervey Bay's Lincoln Davis has made his mark on the global Muay Thai scene, competing against top young fighters from around the world at the 2025 IFMA Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi. Training in Muay Thai since the age of nine, Lincoln has spent the past eight years representing his state and country with distinction.
At the championships, he faced two tough bouts with his first ending in a no contest, and in a thrilling second match against Malaysia, he claimed a hardearned silver medal.
Lincoln's journey was made possible with support from a $1,500 RSL Community Grant, which helped cover travel and accommodation expenses.
“Thank you, RSL, for believing in me and helping turn my dreams into reality,” Lincoln said. “Your generosity has had a lasting impact.”
The Hervey Bay RSL is a place where locals love to gather and unwind with functions and events, great food, entertainment and a flutter in the TAB or gaming room.
But what many patrons don’t realise is that while they’re enjoying a great time out, they’re also helping make a real difference in the local community. The Hervey Bay RSL is the only club in the region with a dedicated community grants program, and over the past decade it has proudly returned more than $6.3 million to the Fraser Coast through donations, in-kind support and sponsorships. Local sporting clubs, community groups, individuals, and the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch and associated veteran groups, have all benefited. The grants program supports the charities and notfor-profit organisations doing incredible work to strengthen and support our community.

The Sub-Branch is looking forward to hosting many memorable commemorations in 2026 with the first being the National Day for War Animals on February 24 . The inaugural service was held in 2022 to pay tribute to the remarkable deeds and sacrifices of animals in times of war.
Throughout history, animals have served as indispensable assets in various roles, including transport, messengers, protectors, mascots, support animals, and cherished pets. The service will start at Freedom Park at 1100hrs.
Next up will of course be Anzac Day on April 25 . Fraser Coast families are encouraged to come together at Freedom Park this Anzac Day to honour every soldier's sacrifice and service to Australia.
The veterans will line up for the Dawn Service at 5am and step-off from the RSL at about 5.15am. The main march will form at 8.45am and step off at about 9.15am with veterans, current serving members, service groups, schools and dignitaries.
The veterans and current serving members will then return to the RSL for a private Gunfire breakfast.
Sub-Branch members who would like to attend the Gunfire Breakfast or the Anzac Day luncheon, must book their ticket at the Sub-Branch office on Level 2.
Membership continues to grow and now stands at 1838. This has positioned us as one of the largest Sub-Branches in Queensland, which is quite exceptional.
The Pension and Wellbeing section are very busy with high numbers of Veterans continuing to seek assistance from the RSL Sub-Branch.
The Sub-Branch is still calling for Contemporary Veterans to consider a position on the Board of Management as my time is done and it is time for you to take the RSL forward. If this position is of interest, please feel free to contact me for further information.
If anyone needs assistance or knows of someone who does need help, please contact the Pension & Wellbeing section, for full details please see below.
Until the next edition,
Brian Tidyman President, Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch
THERE is no mistaking who these wonderful ladies are with the Hervey Bay Ex-Service Women’s Association Social Club receiving a $1200 Hervey Bay RSL Memorial Club grant to purchase association polo shirts.
The shirts proudly display the Association's emblem, ensuring the group presents a united presence at special occasions such as ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, and Association gatherings.
The ladies meet on the second Monday of each month at the RSL, from 10.30am for fun, fellowship, support and planning of future events. Ex-Service Women from all services are welcome to attend.
FRESH VISION FOR CLUBHOUSE FUNCTIONS
Her hospitality journey began in her teenage years at McDonald's before progressing into leadership roles across cafés, pubs and clubs throughout Melbourne.
Having recently relocated to Hervey Bay, Victoria is embracing the region's relaxed lifestyle and her exciting new role within the RSL Group.
But for The Clubhouse Hervey Bay's new dedicated Functions Coordinator, Victoria Corkell, it's a challenge she's more than ready to take on.
With eight years of industry experience and a degree in Event Management, Victoria brings both passion and precision to the role.
She's no stranger to working in clubs set against picturesque golf course backdrops, having previously held the role of Functions Supervisor at the prestigious Settlers Run Golf and Country Club in Cranbourne. Now, she's eager to continue delivering first-class functions from weddings and milestone celebrations to meetings, conferences and corporate golf days, all brought together through meticulous planning and a strong focus on client satisfaction.
“I love working closely with clients to explore their ideas and then seeing everything come together on the dayespecially weddings,” Victoria said.
“Watching their faces light up when they see the room is incredibly fulfilling.
“It's the small details and the preparation behind the scenes that really make the difference. I enjoy getting to know my clients so I can create a truly personalised event just for them.”
The Clubhouse's 160-seat functions room, built as part of a multi-million-dollar extension, features expansive glass windows offering stunning views across the Hervey Bay Golf Club greens and surrounding wildlife which is an elegant and private setting for any occasion. Victoria is also keen to inject fresh energy into the space by introducing Club-run themed events.
“I'm playing with the idea of bringing theme nights to the club as they were
always a crowd favourite in Melbourne,” she said.
“We hosted everything from 80s nights to Indian-themed events, and people loved coming together for a drink and a dance.
“It's definitely something I'd love to explore here.”
Guests can work closely with Victoria to design the perfect menu, whether it's a seated dining experience or a buffet-style function.
The venue offers basic set-up, with the flexibility to add personal touches through customised décor.
Proud to be one of Hervey Bay's best value-for-money wedding and functions venues, The Clubhouse combines exceptional food with professional, dedicated service.
