Carols by
Welcome to the next edition of RSL Life. What an incredible few months it has been! We've celebrated everything from Father's Day to Melbourne Cup, raffles and cash giveaways, and we even gave away a car to one of our lucky members.
Plus, don’t forget... we have no public holiday surcharges at our venues.
Congratulations to Phillip Green who was the lucky winner of the MG Excite.
We are also excited to announce that the club is once again the major sponsor of the Hervey Bay RSL Carols by Candlelight, being held on Saturday, December 11. It's a wonderful family-friendly event hosted by volunteers as a gift to the community. Find out all the details on Page 11.
It was also a great start to the festive season for the RSL after winning the Best Bar & Club Dining award at the prestigious Fraser Coast Business and Tourism Awards. On behalf of the club's committee and staff, we would like to thank all our wonderful members and guests for your ongoing patronage. This win would not have been possible without your continued support. We now turn our attention to Christmas, New Year's Eve and Australia Day with lots of fun, food, and frivolity assured at all our functions and events.
The club recently held our AGM and it was good to see members come along and listen to the reports and receive the audited accounts prepared by CLM Accountants.
Not to mention the share of $8,000 in cash giveaways that patrons can win during gaming room promotions at the RSL. See further details on Page 10.
It was also the first time in several years that a ballot was required for the position of Committee Associate. After this process was completed, the incumbent Robert Garland was successful. We would like to congratulate all those Committee Members who return to the Management Committee.
Bookings for Christmas Day lunch filled quickly at the RSL, Clubhouse Hervey Bay and Bayswater Bar & Grill, and staff are now looking forward to creating a no-fuss little Christmas for all their guests. Plenty of live entertainment has also been booked at our venues over the DecemberJanuary months, including local band Forbidden Road, who will rock the night away on New Year's Eve at the RSL. There will also be lots of super specials on the menus over the holiday period, perfect for feeding all of your holiday guests for the festive season.
On a final note, the Club would like to once again thank all our members and guests for their ongoing support and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year! See you at the Club!

OUT & ABOUT AT
YOUR CLUB The club has been a hive of activity recently with patrons treated to the glitz and glamour of the Melbourne Cup, a Spooktacular night of fun for Halloween, and plenty of live shows and entertainment. One lucky patron had a smile ear to ear after winning a brand-new MG Excite car in the club's super draw last month.
Did you know that Buddy Holly was only 22 when he died in a plane crash? Lucky for us, the legendary sound of Buddy still lives on with Kris Knight - the star of the Australian Buddy Holly Show. His performance at the club recently was second-to-none, with guests experiencing one of the best in the business!
All the fun is set to continue with a no-fuss Christmas lunch, New Year's Eve celebrations and Australia Day, all just around the corner!
Guests were prepped to expect the unexpected at the Faulty Towers Dining Experience in Hervey House recently, and that's exactly how the evening went. Being 70% improvised by the crew on the night, it absolutely was a laugh-a-minute.
No body won the skeleton race, but some lucky patrons did manage a win at Halloween Bingo! Even our fun-loving staff got into the spooky spirit of the night, dressing as pumpkins and witches. With so many fabulous works of art it was a tough gig judging the recent Halloween colouring in competition! Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all the children who took the time to enter.

Cup day was celebrated with finesse at the RSL, with an elegant two-course luncheon and a glass of bubbles on arrival for the 200 guests that joined us. It was a fabulous day, with the Fashion on the Field event hotly contested. Prizes were awarded for the best dressed man and lady, and best fascinator/hat. A few cheers could also be heard from those who took a punt on Verry Elleegant, this year’s cup winner.
BEEP BEEP: Hervey Bay's Phillip Green couldn't believe his luck after being announced as the winner of the MG Excite. Congratulations Phillip! Congratulations also to our other winner s Leanne Dial, Greg Di Bella, Lena Knudsen, Mike O'Halloran, Nilda Middleton and Rodney Mihelic

COMMUNITY GRANTS LIGHTING up lives
THE RSL will once again set up a Christmas giving tree in the club foyer following tremendous support from patrons last year. The club has been a long-time sponsor of the annual Carols by Candlelight and, due to the event being cancelled last year, the decision was made to redirect support to the Combined Churches of Hervey Bay's vital charity work. Organiser Julie Terry said the response was overwhelming. Hundreds of gifts and hundreds of dollars in donations were collected by the Combined Churches and distributed to Fraser Coast residents in need, by local relief agencies, church-
Patrons can also purchase a $5, $10, or $20 bauble, with the funds going directly to the local charities. “It's lovely to have gifts like toys for children but it's also nice to have little toiletry packs for a single mum or dad, or a puzzle pack for the elderly … every little thought will go a long way. “Some other ideas could be schools supplies or a knapsack, drink bottles, games, craft items, or vouchers from local businesses.
based charities, school aged care and prison chaplains. “I was so impressed with the amount of gifts and money that came in, which was amazing because we could give that to the agencies and they used it as they needed it. “The patrons of the RSL really showed some tremendous support towards the cause.” The gift of giving under the tree is encouraged for all ages including children, teenagers, men, women and the elderly.
JINGLE ALL THE WAY TO
“The funds collected from buying a bauble will go towards buying food, gifts and vouchers from local businesses or specific items that people need.” All gifts must be new and left unwrapped or placed in a gift bag with the age group and appropriate gender marked on the tag.
Gifts can be placed under the giving tree until December 17th

AS the sun sets and the stars begin to glisten, the magical sound of Christmas will ring out at Seafront Oval on Saturday, December 11.

The Hervey Bay RSL Carols by Candlelight is set to bring about a little bit of sparkle that's desperately needed after a tumultuous year. Especially as the event was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions. The Hervey Bay RSL Club didn't hesitate to get on board as a major sponsor with

Especially during a period where people have been isolated and disconnected from normality.
The carols program will run from 6pm8pm, with both traditional and fun festive songs being performed by a combined community carols band and a visit from Santa.
“Amongst Covid, where nothing has been normal, I think people are trying to seek out things that haven't changed,” Julie said. “The carols are a local Christmas tradition and have been organized by our local churches for almost 40 years.
Along with about 50 volunteers, Julie Terry from the Hervey Bay Christian Ministers' Association and event planner, Luke Strochnetter from 360 Degrees Marketing, are two key players invested in bringing the carols to life.
“No matter what age we are, there is something special about sitting together under the stars to sing Christmas carols and focus on the

The free event will conclude with a spectacular fireworks display at 8pm. All funds raised from the sale of Glo Candles on the night will go towards supporting school-based programs organised by our local churches (Chaplaincy and Religious Instruction), local aid services and chaplaincy programs in Fraser Coast schools.
COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAM 2022 Supporting the community that supports us...
We strive to make unique and significant contributions and sponsorships to proudly support our local community. Last year the Hervey Bay RSL proudly donated over $466,000 to local organisations, groups & individuals. Community Grants are now open, if you know of an individual or community group that could benefit from our Community Grants program, you can find further details and our application form is now available online www.herveybayrsl.com.au/contact-us or contact Sarah Bailey on 4197 7444.

Bay’s beaches WHERE there is water, there is risk! That's why it's so important to have the Hervey Bay Surf Lifesaving Club members patrolling our beaches and keeping the community safe. The Hervey Bay RSL recognises the valuable contribution the not-for-profit organisation makes to the Fraser Coast region and were only too happy to help keep them afloat with a grant for $5000 a year, for the next three years, through the club's Community Grants Program. The funds will assist in training young and upcoming junior life savers through various Nippers programs an also cover costs of running the annual Nippers Carnival. Chief Training Officer Andrew Eason
“We always have the first one so the novice nippers don't have to worry about waves and can compete to gain their confidence,” Andrew said. “It (grant) allows the club to go that extra mile to ensure the carnival runs smoothly.” The money will also help purchase specialty nipper boards for the bigger kids that outweigh the normal limits of a standard board.

“Everyone enjoys the day and it's lovely for everyone to come together to celebrate and remember that we are all part of the community.”
The Hervey Bay RSL has been a major supporter of the free event for over a decade, donating $3000 each year to cover running costs.
Volunteers will serve guests fruit platters and drink on arrival, followed by the main meal of cold chicken, ham, and salads. A vegetarian option is available.
Coordinator Tanya Stevensen said the team of hard-working volunteers look forward to continuing that tradition, with visitors and Fraser Coast residents from all walks of life invited to attend. “The day us about providing for people with nowhere else to go,” Tanya said. “As Christmas Day is a day for many people to spend with families, this event creates a large family for people who are alone.

A JOURNEY TO REMEMBER A Hervey Bay youth has reached the pinnacle of scouting after tackling a three-day, 30km, self-sufficient hike on Fraser Island. A Hervey Bay youth has reached the pinnacle of scouting after tackling a three-day, 30km, selfsufficient hike on Fraser Island.
Journey Hike on Fraser Island in August, with the only assistance being water top ups from the assisting vehicles.
The completion of the hike meant that 15-year-old Bianca Piggott completed everything in her scout section journey to achieve the ultimate Australian Scout Award.
Bianca planned the journey from start to finish, ensured she had the correct compass bearings and evacuations points, and led other scouts who all set up their own camps at Lake McKenzie and Central Station.
The member of Pialba Scouts reached out to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant program earlier this year for assistance with paying for five assisting vehicle barge fares and beach permits. The club was only too happy to assist with a $1200 grant, especially after hearing this young lady's story of determination. Bianca has been a member of the Scouting organisation since 2018 and was an active member of the Girl Guides from eight years old. Her biggest accomplishment to date was completing the gruelling Australian Scout Award
12
She said it was a challenge hiking in the sand with a tent and backpack full of food, but one she will always remember. “I was proud of myself that I had planned the journey and led the hike from start to finish,” Bianca said. “I was very proud of my fellow scouts who achieved their own personal goals walking this distance; for some, it was their first time on Fraser Island and hiking on sand. “The highlight of the hike was seeing sights of the island that I've never seen before as they can only be seen on the Great Walk.”
Bianca became a scout to achieve her own personal goals and become a good leader, and the result has been life changing. Some of her biggest highlights, she said, has been making friends and teaching younger scouts, and time spent in the great outdoors canoeing, kayaking, camping, taking part in archery and going to place she's never seen before. Bianca is now focusing her goals on achieving the Queen's Scout Award, the highest award in venturers, as well as raising money to attend the World Jamboree in South Korea in 2023.
Congratulations Bianca!

FOR CLUB When your kidneys fail, dialysis keeps your body in balance by removing waste, keeping a safe level of certain chemicals in your blood, and helping to control blood pressure. However, this therapy takes time. Patients that visit the Hervey Bay and Maryborough hospitals for dialysis could be in the renal unit receiving treatment for up to five hours at a time. It's uncomfortable treatment for patients, and spending this long time doing nothing can add more anxiety to the situation. So, when the Hervey Bay RSL grants committee received an application from the Fraser Coast Kidney Support Club to supply patients with quality headphones, there was no hesitation for approval. With the $1650 grant, FCKC coordinator Sandy Turner was able to head to David's Ultrasound and buy 60 headphones to be used in both hospitals.
She said patients can now pass the time by plugging in to watch TV or listen to music, and staff can concentrate and hear alarms better with no constant background noise from televisions. “Up at the dialysis ward it's go, go go, and there's rattles, bangs, crashes and people talking, so the headphones block a little bit of that out and give the patients a bit of privacy,” Sandy said. “It allows them to plug into their iPads, computers or whatever they have with them.” Sandra knows only too well the toll having dialysis has on patients after being a sufferer of kidney failure.
make life easier for patients is so important. The not-for-profit club dug deep recently to supply members with 60 purpose-made hoodies, so funds were low. Sandra said the support she received from the RSL grant program was incredible. “The RSL are the most helpful venue that I have ever come across,” she said. “I just wouldn't have been able to do this without the grant. “I've had a lot of feedback from the patients and they loved them … they thought all their Christmases had come at once.”
That's why doing what she can to
The Hervey Bay Parkinson’s Support Group has been given a much-needed financial boost by the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program
Coordinator Maryann Boyd said the community grant would greatly assist their efforts to keep people who suffer from Parkinson's active and in a positive frame of mind.
She said the funding would help members take part in specialized exercises classes.
“We were thrilled to hear we would be receiving the grant,” Maryann said. She said the funding meant they could keep operating. “We were unable to hold meetings last year due to COVID-19 and those meetings had always been by gold coin donation, so our fundraising efforts really did dry up. “As a result, we submitted an application to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant, because that's
“There is no cure for Parkinson's Disease, but many people say living with the condition is 50 per cent medication and 50 per cent exercise. We have to keep our members moving.” As a group, Maryann said they're all about helping people living with Parkinson's live a better life. “Our meetings and activities give many people a reason to get out of the house. We usually have events twice a month and these include guest speakers and information on things like healthy living.
AN acknowledgement of the water ways, the ecology and the people that surround the River Heads community was celebrated at the Hervey Bay RSL RiverFest recently.
The Hervey Bay RSL alleviated some of that stress for the past three years by coming on board as a major sponsor, with a donation of $2000.
Parkinson’s support exactly what we're about. We are for the community,” explained Maryann.

As a not-for-profit organisation, the event is run only by volunteers and in previous years, was paid for by fundraising efforts and small grants.
MAKING A MOVE FOR
The group received $500 from the Hervey Bay RSL to put towards exercise programs for its members.
A PROUD
“Parkinson's Disease is a very common neurological condition, but many people do not know where they can go to get help.” She said it was important for people living with Parkinson's to get out of the house and share their stories. “Everyone's stories are different; the condition affects people in different ways. But the one thing that is always the same is that we encourage members to see a neurologist.” Maryann said people wanting to join the Hervey Bay Parkinson's Support Group can do so via the Parkinson's Queensland website www.parkinsonsqld.org.au You can also call 0741 281 339 or 0449 578 652.

There were lots of smiles on little faces with the face painting stall being a huge hit, as well as the fire truck display, and a special visit from Rexie the Dinosaur, Poppins the Cat, Fraser the Dog, and Harvey the Whale. The crowd was also kept entertained with a belly dancing display, market stalls, karate demonstration, car rally, local artisans and more, held in and around the River Heads Community Hall.

COMMUNITY GRANTS (CONTINUED)
SMOOTH SAILING TO
promote Bay club THERE will be no mistaking the identity of the Hervey Bay Sailing Club at local and interstate competitions now that two new branded marquees will stand tall at all their events. A $2500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program grant has helped the club purchase the new 6x3m and 3x3m shade covers that were needed for several different reasons. As well as providing shelter to members and visitors, member Emily Grimsley said the logos on the marquees will also promote the longrunning club and help attract fellow sailors to our beautiful waters. “We will also be taking these shades away to sailing regattas outside of the area to promote Hervey Bay as a place to come and visit and sail, so it will be exposure for both our Sailing Club and Hervey Bay. “We often have the public look at us as we set up our boats and some ask a few questions.
“Sailing also is an adrenalin rush and absolute thrilling sport to be involved in, especially when out on trapeze and flying a hull with our spinnaker up.”
“Having marquees with our logo on will offer information and encourage people to engage with us. “We often see other branded marquees and its always interesting to see where people have travelled from – and we engage in conversations.”
Emily said the not-for-profit club was always grateful for assistance from the Hervey Bay RSL, especially during the Coronavirus Pandemic when fundraising is difficult.
In those conversations, there's always plenty of praise for our beautiful Fraser Coast with the canvas for sailing described by Emily as “absolutely spectacular”.
Emily believes a well-run city with plenty of activities to offer will attract visitors, boost the economy and encourage community involvement.
The club also plays host to the iconic annual Bay to Bay Yacht Race.
“Currently, especially with Covid, many families do not have spare money for fundraising so it's vital that businesses like the RSL help to boost clubs to be able to continue to function and provide community sports and experience for our locals,” she said.
“Being out on the water sailing from Urangan up to Point Vernon and looking over the ocean is a wonderful experience,” she said.
“Hervey Bay is an amazing place to be with so much to offer. I am involved in numerous clubs due to my children. “I thank the RSL for their ongoing commitment to all clubs and I encourage everyone to be involved with a community group somehow, as it promotes friendship, builds life experiences and adds value to everyone's well-being. “I also thank all the volunteers out there to keep clubs going through their enthusiasm and passion for community groups.” To find out more about the club, visit the website at herveybaysailingclub.org.au or find them on Facebook.
HELP TO KEEP VETS’
TAKING FLIGHT AT
Bucca
retreat going
LEADERSHIP and individual development activities was the major focus of a unique camp experience for Year 6 students from Torbanlea State School.
The veterans' retreat at Lenthalls Dam has been transformed over the past 11 or 12 years into a picturesque site that offers veterans the perfect place to unwind.
The school's P&C Association had been working hard to fundraise enough money to subside the two-day camp to Bucca Retreat in Bundaberg and the Hervey Bay RSL also helped with a $1000 community grant to pay for the cost of the bus. Coordinator Annie Newberry said the grant was a major win for the school, which is part of a rural, low socioeconomic area, where extracurricular activities like the camp are a luxury. “In a small town, it is a drain to always be asking our families, businesses and community groups for donations,” Annie said. “As the P&C, our aim is to ensure that our local kids receive the same quality of education, opportunities and
experiences that are available in larger and better funded schools.
The Hervey Bay and District Veterans Association will be able to continue with the facility's upkeep and maintenance thanks to a $1,500 Community Grant from the Hervey Bay RSL.
“Experiences such as participating in the Year 6 camp are not a given in our school and we do everything we can to try and bridge this gap.”
The association's secretary Simon Morley said they were excited to hear the association was announced as a recipient of the Hervey Bay RSL's Community Grants Program.
The students had a blast experiencing activities like catch and release fishing for bass and barramundi, canoeing, laser skirmish, swimming, volleyball, and obstacle courses on offer.
“The retreat sleeps up to 30 veterans at any time. It offers them the great place for rest and relaxation,” he said.
There were also some exciting twists and turns on the 15m high waterslide, which lit up at night-time.
Mr Morley said the grant would also go towards fuel costs as the retreat is powered by a generator.
For more information on how to apply for a community grant, visit www.herveybayrsl.com.au
“The retreat is a place where veterans can get together and unwind,” he said.
15
While the venue is used extensively by the Hervey Bay and Districts Veterans' Association, it is available to other veterans' associations for hire. “It would be very difficult for us to keep the retreat running without the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant Program,” explained Mr Morley. He said the association had received community grants from the Hervey Bay RSL on previous occasions. “This grant will be used specifically for maintenance work and to continue with other projects at the retreat that we have already started.” Veterans wanting to use the retreat at Lenthalls Dam can reach out to the Hervey Bay and District Veterans' Association.

SALUTE TO THE
fallen
AS 11am on November 11 ticked over, thousands of residents observed a minute silence to remember the pain, suffering and sacrifice ex-servicemen and woman experienced while defending our country’s freedom. The crowd gathered at the Freedom Park Cenotaph in Pialba for the Remembrance Day memorial, which this year marked 103 years since the ending of World War 1.
In 1914 the population of the country was under five million.
After World War 2, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom's proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars.
“Out of the 324,000 who enlisted and served overseas, 61,720 of them were killed in action, 155,000 wounded and 4,044 captured as Prisoners of War … 397 of those died in captivity,” he said.
Today, the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on this poignant day. In a moving address, Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman said Australia made a huge sacrifice to play a significant role in the conflict.
Brian said a great price was paid by Australia for the final Victory on this date 103 years ago.
“We must never forget the sacrifice that was paid then and in following Wars and conflicts that Australia has been involved in since.” Following the service, dignitaries and school leaders were invited to lay a wreath in honour of the fallen. Lest We Forget!

LEADING
THE TEAM It’s exciting times in the kitchen at The Clubhouse Hervey Bay with the introduction of a new and highly experienced head chef. John Schmidt has been part of the RSL team for some 15 years and made the move to the much-loved Pialba venue about a month ago. John's passion for food and flair for culinary art was ignited at a young age, having started his career as a kitchen hand at the iconic Sizzler food chain on the Sunshine Coast. This led to many more fantastic opportunities to progress his way to head chef, including working in some of the most prestigious Sunshine Coast restaurants like the Kawana Waters Hotel, which looks right on to the spectacular Mooloolah River. “I worked my way from the bottom up and have learnt some valuable lessons along the way,” John said. “I love the thrill of creating new ideas and new dishes and meeting new people along the way.
“It was great experience and certainly set me up for my role in the kitchen for the RSL.” One of the key requirements of becoming a chef is being able to work under pressure and, with a great team behind him, John thrives in a fast-paced environment. Luckily, he said, his new team at the Clubhouse are outstanding. “We have a fantastic team at the Clubhouse.
with the team taking great pride in every dish they serve. “We pride ourselves on our popular steaks, chicken schnitzels and our variety of seafood options, and we have a great variety of lunch specials too. “We change the special every few weeks to keep it nice and fresh.”
“You have to have a good team behind you because if you don't, that kitchen will fail all the time.
The Clubhouse caters for all ages and is a friendly-friendly venue that has a playroom to keep the kids entertained.
“When there's a good balance and harmony in the kitchen it will all come together. Everyone here just gets in and gets the job done.”
There's also plenty of meals for the kids to choose from, plus a selection of vegetarian and gluten free options.
John loves the variety of culinary flair already created in The Clubhouse menu,
