We have been fortunate on the Fraser Coast to remain open during the latest COVID-19 lockdown however, our new Burpengary Community Club was forced to close several times.

Having only opened in June this year, the shutdowns were difficult, but we are not overtly disappointed with the early trade.

The Burpengary community and surrounds have embraced the club and we thank them for their patronage.

There are some exciting ventures also happening in Hervey Bay, starting with the opening of The Bayswater Bar & Grill's bottle shop at the Fraser Shores Shopping Complex. The bottle shop is allowed under the Hotels license and we feel the location is perfect for a bottle shop.

The RSL Group has purchased a block of land on Truro St, Torquay, and an application is currently with council for the development approval of a unique mini golf complex, motel and townhouses.

This will not be your average put-put course! The 3300sqm space will be much like the very popular Maroochy River Mini Golf at Bli Bli (example in the photo), and will boast landscaped humps and hollows, water features and sand traps.

It is envisaged that the mini golf, coupled with an on-site café, will provide a tourism boost to the Fraser Coast and give local families more variety when it comes to things to do in the region.

Watch this space for more updates.

The Annual General Meeting will be held on October 23, at 10.15am, and all financial members are welcome to attend. Given the complexities of the reporting requirements this year your committee extended the requirement to hold the AGM from three to four months after the end of the financial year.

Last but certainly not least is the fact that one lucky patron will drive away in a brand-new MG Excite Car when it's drawn on October 9.

Members receive one automatic entry with every $10 spend in the club between Monday, August 2 and October 9.

YOUR CLUB THE RSL has been a hive of activity recently with a visit from Santa for Christmas in July, along with toy raffles, Father's Day celebrations and lots of live entertainment.

The next few months are shaping up to be just as action-packed with Melbourne Cup celebrations, hilarious comedy shows like Faulty Towers: The Dining Experience and Women Like Us, as well as Christmas day functions and entertainment.

About 200 guests dressed in their festive best to enjoy the day's entertainment with lots of raffles, cash giveaways and live music at the recent Christmas in July celebrations.

With the real deal now only a few months away, turn to the back page to see the exciting plans the RSL has for Christmas Day this year. Table bookings are now open.

Christmas really did come early for the kids who took home a prize from the Christmas in July monster toy raffles. With everything from plush toys to a bike, over $2500 worth of prizes were won on the day.

Guests who were able to snavel tickets to the two fully sold-out Eagles Tribute Show last month were treated to two hours of non-stop entertainment by these spectacular musicians.

Performing all the greatest hits, the band captured the Eagles timeless appeal that connects with music lovers everywhere.

Guests had a cracker of a night with multi award-winning Australian entertainer Steve Cummings taking to the stage in Hervey House recently.

The Neil Diamond tribute star had the audience up and grooving to legendary tunes like Sweet Caroline, I'm a Believer, Cherry Cherry and many more favourites.

Freedom Park in Hervey Bay was a place of tribute on August 18, with about 50 veterans turning out in honour of Vietnam Veterans Day. After the service, the vets came back to Hervey House for a cold beer and some banter with good mates.

A CONSTANT

in the kitchen

OVER the past 25 years Vanessa Breitenbach has spent more than 45,000 hours working in the kitchen at the Hervey Bay RSL. She knows every inch of the floor space, the daily schedule inside and out and doesn't hesitate to share her wealth of experience with anyone who needs a hand.

but when her husband heard that a job opportunity had become available for a kitchen hand at the RSL, she was lined up for an interview … and the rest is history.

Affectionately known to her work mates as Ness, she has become one of the most loved characters of the Sandy Bay Restaurant and is well-known for her sense of humour, a willingness to help her team and her “let's get this done” attitude.

She proved her dedication to the role for about 12 years before being promoted to cook, a job she still relishes in today.

Not just in the kitchen but to anyone in the RSL team.

The veteran cook started all those years ago when the RSL was just one level, a small team of kitchen staff and no A la carte menu.

After moving from Gladstone to Hervey Bay in 1995, Ness's husband started work at HBW – a supplier to the RSL. Ness had never worked in hospitality

“You need to have your mind on the job because if you haven't got what you need to do done, then you have to do it in the middle of service, when you're under the pump.

“You also need to be able to think about prep for tomorrow and maybe even part of the next day.”

As in any workplace, the way a team works together determines its success, and that can't be truer when working in a fast-paced kitchen environment like the Sandy Bay Restaurant.

Ness said it's also a bonus when you've got great management behind you.

Ness said the ability to be calm and sensible are also essential characteristics needed for the job.

“I have very good bosses and they are all very calm, you can always talk to them, they never say no to answering questions … you can't have stressed bosses in the kitchen.

“Our team is very good, everyone works together, and everyone helps everyone and works well together,” Ness said.

“They are true professionals and they have been on the line as chefs … I do congratulate them on how good they are.”

She is also responsible for the delicious potato bakes, gravy and stock that are served with the very popular roast specials in the bistro for lunch and dinner.

“I think you need to be sensible to work in a kitchen. You need to be able to think

COMMUNITY GRANTS TAKE LIFE BY THE

ONE of the best ways to see the sights in beautiful Hervey Bay is on two wheels.

However, getting on a bike comes with rules to ensure the safety of cyclists and motorists alike.

Grant to help deliver a 'Safe Riding in Groups' training course which was held in August.

That's where the Fraser Coast Bicycle User Group can help.

President Brian Jessett said the main aim of the group is to promote cycling, keep the 155 members fit, healthy, active and connected with the community, but with a strong focus on safety.

It doesn't matter what kind of bike you ride or whether you wear lycra or not, the local not-for-profit organisation has seven categories of group rides, catering from beginners to advanced riders.

No-one gets left behind!

He said the one-day theory course was attended by many members of the group, volunteers and residents who just love to ride.

To help keep their wheels turning safely, the Hervey Bay RSL has assisted the group with a $2600 Community

In the past three months alone, there was four major incidents that left six members with significant injuries

including a fractured pelvis, vertebrae, collar bone and ribs.

Mr Jessett said these injuries may have been avoided had the riders been armed with the tools to handle different scenarios on the road.

“Many of our members requested this course due to lack of cycling knowledge when it comes to skills and safety,” he said.

“The course provided participants with

that knowledge and skills to handle various challenges when riding for example with cars, kangaroos, turning, going up hills … so they can keep themselves and others in their group safe.”

The Hervey Bay RSL continues to support the local community by offering financial assistance to clubs, schools and community groups through their Community Grants Program.

Students from Urangan State High School, Xavier Catholic College and Star of the Sea primary schools are the latest recipients of their generosity.

The Hervey Bay RSL has delivered $3500 to assist the schools in funding buses to attend AFL Queensland Schools Cup regional finals in Brisbane.

“The Hervey Bay RSL are amazing in the way they support the community.

Without their support, it makes it very hard for students to fund their travel to these events. It allows them to concentrate on playing footy,” AFL Queensland Wide Bay Development coordinator Kieron Hyndman said.

“The Hervey Bay RSL is pleased to contribute in a small way to our outstanding local athletes,” she said.

RSL grant A SMALL team of volunteer radio broadcasters are using their expertise to help promote everything that’s great about the Fraser Coast. region's foreshores, and two-minute stories about local points of interests.

“We like to position ourselves to be able to tell stories about all of the area and bring it to people's attention,” Alan said.

Alan Baxter and Barry Barwick are the creative minds behind the Fraser Coast Tourist FM Radio, which runs prerecorded programs 24/7 from two broadcast licenses, Booral and River Heads on FM87.8 and FM88.0.

Progress Association library, the two are passionate about the on-air promotion of over 50 local not-for-profit community groups and sporting organisations, as well as highlighting tourist hotspots and the history behind them.

Barry is a veteran behind the mic having worked at numerous radio stations around Australia as a presenter and is now the volunteer Program Coordinator and Technical Manager.

River Heads itself is known widely as the gateway to Fraser Island, with thousands of visitors passing through each year on their way to the ferry and many boaties living on the yachts in the river.

Along with Alan - who takes care of administration and promotions - and about 20 volunteers in the Friends of Fraser Coast Tourist Radio group, the team broadcast material that is popular with locals and tourists alike, first going to air in 2015.

They too can get a glimpse of what the region has to offer through the station's broadcasts.

“It's good to support all groups and individuals in the community, to tell of their aspirations and also let the community know of coming local events.

“We see ourselves as an information source that is going out freely for anybody that wants to listen, or anyone that wants to go to that place (promoted on air) and have a look.

“We are also a good alternative to the five stations already operating in the region,” Barry added.

One of the biggest challenges the team faces is funding for new equipment to not only keep up to the times but spread their radio wings further afield to engage more listeners.

The Hervey Bay RSL recognised the valuable contribution the station makes to the community and assisted recently with a $1400 Community Grant.

The funds have enabled the group to buy a “significant” software package including Station Playlist Pro and Creator Pro, plus three other pieces of equipment used for technical purposes.

“The software is such an innovative product as it assists so directly with programming by allowing control of music selection, allows common spacing trim, and enables frequency selection of repeats,” Alan said.

“The broadcast material sounds more regular and 'acceptable'.

“If we didn't have that grant, we would have had to scratch around and find another source of funding. It has made a significant difference.”

The committee was hesitant to spend $1750 on a machine that would be used for “just in case” but a local paramedic who visited the team for a chat quickly changed their mind.

“He said just because they are down the road it doesn't mean they are always there. It might only take them five minutes to get there but that might be five minutes too long.

Funding was also taken care of with the museum being successful in getting a $1275 grant from the Hervey Bay RSL Grants Program and a further generous donation of $475 from the Hervey Bay RSL Social Bowls Club.

“Our volunteers and most of the visitors are elderly, and it could be needed at any time.

Because of his profession, George is very aware that the unexpected can happen at any time.

“I'm an (retired) electrician so I understand CPR and the need for it in real life,” George said.

Youth mentoring YOUTH mentoring isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you first see about 300 Lycra-clad cyclists lining up for a big annual event.

But for the past decade, that's the exact reason why hundreds of people have risen early and got on their bikes to take part in the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre's Tour de Bay. Tour de Bay was first started a decade ago to raise funds for the Youth Mentoring program, which supports 30 young people at school who are experiencing difficulty interacting, participating and contributing to the community in positive, constructive and respectful ways.

Program coordinators match students up with trained Volunteer Mentors who visit students one to two times per week at school and provide positive support by listening, assisting with goal setting, helping them to recognise their strengths and develop them, and be a sounding board for ideas and problems.

Entrants had the option of four routes to choose from: the 5 km, 25 km, 50km or 100km route.

“Tour De Bay is the highlight of the year, not only because of the excitement of seeing so many riders take to the course but also because the event raises support and awareness of our wonderful Youth Mentoring Program,” she said.

Maryborough bull rider Angus Hollands is riding high after being named a Fraser Coast Regional Council junior sportsperson.

The monthly award profiles athletes who stand up above the rest; whether it's talent, heart, determination or overcoming a challenge.

Angus recently competed in the Australian Mini Bull Riding Championships in Rockhampton where he placed second and fourth in the first two rounds, before placing second overall in the under 12 division.

He also qualified to compete in the World Finals in Oklahoma in the United States earlier this year after winning the NRA Diamond K 810 mini bull ride last year but could not attend due to the pandemic.

INVESTING IN

local youth PATRONS will see some new young faces working around the RSL Group’s venues in coming months with 31 new school-based trainees joining the team.

It's the largest intake of trainees the RSL has had since the valuable training program started in 2013, with 116 students already having had the opportunity to be shown the ropes during that time.

Assistant Manager and HR Manager Janeen Holmes said the placements are designed to provide better employment opportunities for local youth, with most studying a Certificate III in Hospitality provided by the Hervey Bay RSL and at no cost to

The trainees will have the opportunity to work in the bistro, café and bar area at the RSL, The Clubhouse, Bayswater Bar & Grill and Salt Café.

Janeen said it's important to give the students an opportunity to learn hands-on skills that will assist them well into the future.

“The students are conducting handson training on every shift they work and are buddied up with skilled staff to mentor them,” Janeen said.

“If they are going to continue to university, they will have more employment opportunities in the cities if they have hospitality skills, and certainly from working at the Hervey Bay RSL Club,” Janeen said.

TWENTY years of recognising the exceptional achievements of young people in the community will be celebrated at the Fraser Coast Youth Achievement Awards in November.

ALL eyes were on the Hervey Bay Touch Association recently when thousands of players from around Queensland and New South Wales converged on the local field.

There are nine awards to be presented, with three of those proudly sponsored by the Hervey Bay RSL including the Overall young Achiever Award, Sporting Achievement Award and the Community Involvement Award.

Organised by the Maryborough Neighbourhood Centre, the awards are open to 12 to 25-year-old residents living in Hervey Bay and surrounds.

The awards recognize young people within the Fraser Coast community who have set goals and achieved those selfdefined goals through determination and will-power.

The awards presentation evening on November 5 will feature honoured guests, speakers and performers displaying the talents of the young people from the Fraser Coast community.

A grant of $1000 was allocated to the not-for-profit group as part of the Hervey Bay RSL's Community Grants Program.

Other categories include Academic Achievement, The Voice of Youth, Multicultural Involvement, Achievement in the Arts, Musical, Personal Achievement Awards.

With the field ready and the players in new uniforms thanks to a $5300 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant, the club was well prepared for the running of the 25th annual State Touch Carnival.

After being cancelled due to the COVID19 pandemic in 2020, organisers are looking forward to once again hosting this special event.

It was the tenth time the association had held the cup at the Denman Camp Road grounds.

It returned after being cancelled last year due to the sports shutdown caused by the pandemic.

“It's actually great to have it back, and I think that's what's made it so exciting for everyone. We get to play touch footy, which is what we love to do,” Hervey Bay Touch Association president Jodie Houliston said.

The Hervey Bay Touch Association had four teams playing in this year's carnival including under 12 boys and girls, under 14 girls and under 16 girls.

THE SUB-BRANCH PRESIDENTS REPORT

The pain, suffering and sacrifice ex-servicemen and women experienced while defending our country’s freedom will never be forgotten.

That will be the clear message on Remembrance Day as members and guests of the Hervey Bay RSL SubBranch pause to remember on the 11th day, of the 11th month, at 11am.

A 3000-strong crowd is expected to turn out at the Freedom Park Cenotaph in Pialba for the memorial, which will this year mark 103 years since the ending of World War 1.

After World War 2, the Australian Government agreed to the United Kingdom's proposal that Armistice Day be renamed Remembrance Day to commemorate those who were killed in both World Wars.

Today, the loss of Australian lives from all wars and conflicts is commemorated on this poignant day.

“It's important that we come together to observe this very special day and remember those that gave their lives 103 years ago in the 'War to end all Wars'.”

With last years' service being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman is hoping for a better outcome this year.

Mr Tidyman will lead the 30-minute service with a special address, followed by laying of wreaths by local dignitaries and school captains.

“Depending on State Health regulations at the time we will be hoping for a large turnout of veterans and citizens of Hervey Bay on the day, even though the 11th is a Wednesday,” Mr Tidyman said.

The service will start at 10.45am at Freedom Park Cenotaph, Pialba.

The Sub-Branch Committee have been busy with Commendations for VP Day, Korean Veterans Day and Peacekeepers Day. The next Commemoration will be Remembrance Day on November 11, 2021.

He said it's just like Christmas at home with decorations setting the festive spirit and a full buffet dinner or lunch with turkey, ham, roast beef, salads, a dessert tasting plate, and all the traditional trimmings like stuffing, cranberry sauce and gravy.

There will also be a selection of cold seafood like oysters and Moreton Bay Bugs.

Children will have the choice of either the roast or a pizza with a soft drink included.

There will also be entertainment on Christmas Eve by local artist One Sly Dog, so you can sit back and relax to some modern tunes.

The Christmas Eve dinner was held for the firsttime last year, and many guests enjoyed the evening so much that they have already booked again for this year.

“We had such great feedback last year with lots of guests pleased with the huge amount of food and the great entertainment,” Duane said.
