It was a very well attended event. The Mayor of Moreton Bay Regional Council said a few words, along our CEO Jason Lynch. The Club opened to the public on the following day, which was a great success. Let's hope the community continue to support the club and we see no reason why this won't happen, as there has never been a community club in Burpengary before. If you are going past, be sure to pop in and say hello. Your RSL members card will entitle you to a discount on food and beverages. There are also some exciting promotions coming up at the Hervey Bay RSL in August, with patrons getting the chance to win a brand-new MG Excite vehicle, plus $10,000 worth of cash prizes.

COMMUNITY GRANTS TEENS GET A SHOT

COSMOS Netball Club thinks outside of the court when it comes to providing earning potential and development opportunities for teenage athletes. Since 2016, the Hervey Bay RSL has sponsored the club with an annual Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant of $3000 to help run their Cosmos Umpire Development Program, which enables teenagers to be paid a small wage as mentors, junior umpires and trainee umpires. This opportunity gives teenagers the chance to earn some money, while still staying connected to the sport, their club and the community. President Sonia England said Cosmos has long held an ethos of developing a love of the game, which not only refers to netball, but sport in general.

meaning they have a high level of experience, confidence, selfesteem, and strong will to support and encourage our younger inexperienced umpires.

So, there's often a major disappointment when it comes to teenage members giving up the sport to make time for work. “We have found over previous years that we lose players once they reach employment age to part-time jobs, with many girls upset at having to give up netball once they enter part-time work,” Sonia said.

“We then offer them permanent roles for the season as a mentor and a place in our Umpire Development Program.

“So, Cosmos identified a way to merge the love of netball with part-time employment.

“The feedback since we launched this program in 2015 has been overwhelmingly positive on all levels.”

“We identify experienced teenagers from our existing pool who met our requirements as an Umpire Mentor,

Sonia said the funds received by the RSL is vital in delivering the program each year.

Now, thanks to the help of a $10,000 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant, the little ones will be climbing and swinging by the end of the 2021 school year.

“Active play is an important component of child development,” Ms McMorrow said.

Principal Sharon McMorrow said the installation of a dedicated, purposebuilt playground for the middle school learners will help encourage the

“The sponsorship provides opportunities for teenage athletes to remain engaged in sports, encourages community spirit and helps develop them for leadership roles in the future.

“Purpose-built play equipment also provides children with the opportunity to strengthen their core and develop upper body strength, all of which encourages healthy minds and healthy bodies.” Ms McMorrow said the RSL grant allowed the P&C and school to fast track the plans to build the playground, at an expected cost of about $70,000.

“In today's society we see an increasing number of children from an early age spending more and more time in front of screens and less time engaging in physical activity.

COMMUNITY GRANTS (CONTINUED)

A FIELD OF POPPIES

for reflection NINE incredibly talented local poppy artists have come together for the ‘Lest We Forget’ poppy project, which incorporates crafting 1443 single ceramic Flanders poppies and then ‘planting’ them on the grassed slope of the light horse memorial for Anzac Day services in 2022.

Poppy Project leader Fliur-Louise Genevieve – an ex-service member of the Royal Australian Navy - said the tribute will be a visual art installation that recognises the service and sacrifices made by those who are listed on the light horse memorial, Freedom Park, and the Pialba Memorial Cenotaph. There will also be one lone purple poppy to commemorate the animals that served during conflicts.

Ruth Dillon and Irene's husband Alec who singlehandedly prepared all the poppies stems.

Poppies need to be pre-purchased prior to the display and then collected after Anzac Day.

They take about two- and-a-half hours to complete from start to finish and an additional two days to fire the poppies.

All funds raised from the poppy sales will go to Mates4Mates charity, who work with the military community (both serving and veterans) and their families to offer strong mental health and wellbeing programs.

When planted in the garden each poppy stands approximately 35cm tall, are designed to be outside and will hold water so that small birds can drink from them.

While the poppy project was inspired by Paul Cummins and Tom Piper, who conceived and then developed the 2014 Tower of London poppy installation, the design of these poppies is original to the group.

The project will be completed in time for the poppies to go on sale from Monday, April 11 for $25 each, until sold out and can be purchased from the foyer of the RSL.

This includes the talents of volunteer artists Annie Alexander, Camille Sangster, Fay Thomson, Helen Kirk, Irene Brown, Jo Shadbolt, Kaye Moffat,

“The poppies will occupy a space of approximately 50 square meters and we hope those who view them will

ROTARY'S

pause for a moment of reflection upon the service and sacrifices made by all military members and how these allow us to enjoy the freedom and lifestyle we all enjoy,” Fliur-Louise said.

The group hopes to raise $45,000 for the not-for-profit charity. The project is proudly sponsored by a $6000 grant from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program and a $6000 donation from the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch.

DRIVE for safety

A $1500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant is helping to keep local youth safe behind the wheel. the showgrounds,” Chris said.

Around the world, road traffic injuries cause 1.25 million deaths and up to 50 million injuries each year.

“Because of this, all 1500 Hervey Bay students have to be transported to and from the venue.

It is the leading cause of death among young people aged 15-29.

“One of the barriers in the past for some students and parents has been the cost of getting to and from the venue, so we have committed to provide transport.”

That is why local Rotary Clubs are dedicated to ensuring local youth know the dangers before getting in the drivers' seat.

The Richers Transport truck was used in the program to teach students about safe distances with trucks. There is a vehicle parked behind the truck, a vehicle parked in front and one to the passengers' side of the truck. The students get up into the truck and experience what the driver can and can't see.

The Rotary Clubs of Hervey Bay and Maryborough are hosting two innovative youth Driver Awareness/Road Safety courses for about 2500 Year 10 and 11 students this year.

Chris said the Maryborough team had been running the successful program for some time and, at the request of local Police and schools, Hervey Bay students were now included. He said the course is made up of several components that challenge students to change the way that they think about road safety and is designed for youth who are starting to drive independently or likely to be a passenger of novice drivers.

Spokesmen Chris McIntyre said the RSL grant would contribute to the cost of transporting 1500 Hervey Bay students by bus to the Maryborough Showgrounds, where the course is held. “The logistics required to run the program means that the only suitable venue to run the program in the area is

“They participate in a speed and braking demonstration, grasp an

12

understanding of road awareness and road conditions, the challenges that confront them driving on the highway, particularly with large vehicles around them, and proper decision making. “The importance of road safety education on young drivers cannot be underestimated, particularly on the Fraser Coast where there is a high volume of highway and open driving. “Road trauma statistics are alarming, and the enormity of the loss affects the impacting family, friends, a school community and the community in general.” Facilitators of the program include crash investigators, police, driving instructors, and trucking industry representatives. Survivors of serious motor vehicle accidents also attend to share their stories about how decisions on the road have impacted their lives, and the lives of family and friends.

EMPOWERING

local youth COLOUR run, skate party, giant games and an afternoon of block busters were just a few of the activities enjoyed by about 700 kids for 2021 Youth Week on the Fraser Coast. The Hervey Bay RSL was a supporter of the day after providing a Community Grant for $2000 to help cover the cost of inflatable activities and about 10 raffle prizes including a $900 electric scooter, speakers, gift vouchers and more. Mayor George Seymour said the events were held to celebrate young people aged 12 to 25 and the positive contributions they make to the Fraser Coast. “Young people make invaluable contributions to our region and play a vital role in our community,” Cr Seymour said. “To support our young people Council is committed to working in partnership with youth and community

organisations to provide strategic advice and capacity building that encourages young people's participation in the community.” The Colour run at SkateSide on the Esplanade was one of the week's biggest highlights, which included a skate park party, live DJ and Red Frog Board Riders, a beach touch carnival, inflatable activities and games, an Amazing Race style scavenger hunt, free WetSide waterslides, barbecue and drinks.

EQUIPPED WITH

mateship

WHEN a loved one is struggling with their mental well-being, it's hard to know what to say and where to turn for help.

That's why it's vital to have services like Fraser Coast Mates available in the region. The not-for-profit organisation aims to build awareness and conversations about mental health issues with local men and their families, while building the gap between support services and ultimately make progress for suicide prevention.

Spokesman Darren Bosley said the group's goal is to encourage mates to be better equipped to help their friends and colleagues in times of need, rather than shy away from a conversation.

Mr Bosley said the donation has played a significant part in helping to promote the group's resources, activities and educating the community on mental health through various social media platforms.

“Conversations are very powerful. It takes a lot of courage for someone to speak up about how they are feeling and encouraging conversations is the first step,” Mr Bosley said.

“This (Coordinator) role has allowed us to produce video messaging, and the latest campaign on Facebook reached over 20,000 with very favourable feedback,” he said. “The communication this role generates not only educates and creates stronger awareness around mental health, it also aims to promote relevant services in this space and make people aware of options locally.

Mr Bosley said promotion of the group's services is key to reaching those in need, and the Hervey Bay RSL Committee couldn't agree more. In the latest round of Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants, the club donated $9600 to help cover 50% of the cost to have a dedicated Content Coordinator for 12 months.

“Fraser Coast Mates must take a lead in communicating to the local community. Connecting people in need with the right services is crucial, so our

13

Content Coordinator role plays an integral role with our communication on social media and our website.” The group's website is jam-packed with information on getting help, knowing the signs of various mental health issues like depression, anxiety or stress, and links to local sporting organisations to help get moving and clear the mind. Following the Facebook page is also a great way to follow the links to other local organisations, positive and mindful posts, and promotion of Fraser Coast Mates activities. Visit the website at frasercoastmates.com.au or find them on Facebook under Fraser Coast Mates.

IN STYLE STUDENTS from Xavier Catholic College stepped out onto their respective sporting fields in style this month thanks to a $2000 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant. The grant enabled the teams to don new uniforms and help cover the cost of attending the events. It was also lovely, he said, to reward the artists for their hard work thanks to the RSL grant. It's a passion and a positive outlet for many Fraser Coast residents. So, when it came time to reward several passionate artists for their contribution to the arts, the Hervey Bay RSL was happy to support the Hervey Bay Art Society's annual competition with a $500 Community Grant to cover the cost of prizes. of getting socially isolated veterans, of any age, together for an outing with like-minded people.

VETS HAVE A SHOULDER

TO lean on TRYING to navigate through government assistance packages can be frustrating and confusing at the best of times. For Fraser Coast veterans, former and current members of the Defence Force and their dependents, not knowing what help and services are available to them, or how to gain them, can often be the tipping point to serious mental health issues like PTSD and suicide. That's why the Hervey Bay RSL SubBranch's free Pensions and Compensation Advocacy Service is vital. The service is staffed and operated by two fully qualified advocates, Adrian Lindsay and Michael 'Tiny' Andersen, Wellbeing Coordinator Kristie Scire and Wellbeing Administrator Chrissy Dimitriou. Together the team work tirelessly to ensure that veterans, of any age, and their families have the assistance they need, when they need it. The well-being team work alongside about 20 volunteer visitation officers who visit veterans' in their homes, nursing homes and hospitals, to provide mateship, reduce social isolation and make sure all their care requirements are being met. They also help veterans fill out forms and applications, apply for assistance in the home, health referrals and more. “A lot of the veterans don't know what they are entitled to until they come into the office to see us,” Kristie said. “Especially the older generation that might struggle with computers and

filling out forms,” Chrissy added. “We have volunteers that go out and have coffee with them, have a chat and they can be there as long or as little as they like … it's up to them.”

Guests must be ex-service, visited by one of the support officers and unable to get out and about to socialise by themselves. The office, located in the Signature building on Torquay Rd, is managed by Meagan O'Brien who is the first point of contact for anyone in need of information. If a veteran needs any sort of help, they shouldn't hesitate to make an appointment. The Pensions and Compensation Advocacy Service is open from 0900-1500 hours, Monday to Friday. Phone 4184 9496.

It also provides the volunteers with the opportunity to do a welfare check. “Doing welfare checks on those that don't go out all the time is very important,” Kristie said.

THE SUB-BRANCH PRESIDENTS REPORT

“Sometimes they can be without food and we're unaware of that; they definitely need our help.” For pensions, veterans have the support of the advocates, who can help break down the ins and outs of the DVA Acts, including assistance with lodging claims.

On Sunday, July 4, a Service of Commemoration was held for OPERATION RIMAU, the ill-fated raid on Singapore harbor. A large crowd of about 100 members was in attendance.

“A lot of them at the end of their tether and don't know what to do and that's where that little bit of help makes a huge difference,” Kristie said.

The weather was extremely kind to us considering what Saturday was like and the view over the Great Sandy Strait was awesome.

“Veterans families who feel they have no help and are fighting a battle with their father alone, we've made a few phone calls and helped them out at the right time when they thought there was nobody.

The next commemoration will be for the Korea Veterans on July 27 at Freedom Park commencing at 1100hrs. There are only a couple of Korea Vets left in the Bay, so all are welcome to come along to support them.

“There's a lot of help out there, the options are endless, they just need to know about them.”

For general interest the number of Sub-Branch Members as of July 7, 2021 is 1,616 which puts this Sub-Branch very high on membership basis.

The service also hosts a Diggers Lunch at the Hervey Bay RSL on the last Tuesday of the month, with the purpose

Pension and Wellbeing sections are very busy with claims and Veterans in need of assistance. In July, the Wellbeing will be hosting the Diggers lunch with the theme of Christmas in July with little presents being handed out. The diggers lunch has been an outstanding success since its inception with mainly Veterans in social isolation situations being the focus. If anyone needs assistance or knows of someone who does need help, please contact the Pension and Wellbeing section see our contact details and opening times below. Until next time take care and be happy.

“The biggest highlight has been building the relationships with the staff, patrons and management,” he said.

“Each step has been building the foundation of where I am now, and I will continue to build and strengthen where I am going.

He may even be a familiar face to locals after appearing on Nine News, praising his efforts and quick-thinking after a fire tore through a nearby unit block on August 1 last year. He was awarded Employee of the Month for his efforts. “There was a fire on Hunter Street, and we assisted with the buses in transporting people from their homes and sheltering them at the Club in Hervey House (function room) until they were able to be supplied with housing. “A few of the people were regulars and they were all very thankful.”

FRASER COAST MATES

GO PINK FOR Golf Day THE 5th annual Fraser Coast Mates golf day held at the Hervey Bay Golf Club on the 25th of June was a huge success. With over 200 people attending in pink shirts, the day has raised over $10,000 that will go towards funding a local counsellor for urgent support. This year's event was proudly supported by The Maryborough Sun as major sponsor with over 100 local businesses across the Fraser Coast region coming together.

growing support from the community for the golf day reflects the impact that mental health and suicide is having on the community.

Fraser Coast Mates works hard to raise awareness of suicide prevention and mental health initiatives in the local community, hosts a number of events throughout the year including the Golf Day and a Tennis Night.

“While our community has a greater awareness on mental health, the suicide numbers in our region are getting worse. If we want change, it has to start at a community level and encourage people to speak up in a trusting environment”.

President for the Fraser Coast Mates, Darren Bosley, says the

connection to mental health. So many inspiring, the experience and tools they have gained with many acknowledging it's a constant in their life. “It reiterates to anyone locally that is suffering that they are not alone. Share your feelings and you will be surprised how many have something in common.” Fraser Coast Mates will also be holding a dinner this year on Friday 13th August at the Beach House Hotel featuring guest speaker ex AFL Footballer Wayne

Schwass and entertainment by local musician Jade Holland. See their Facebook page for ticket details. The team at Fraser Coast Mates can be contacted via email at admin@frasercoastmates.com.au and you can keep updated following on Facebook: www.facebook.com/FCMates.
