A dawn service and main service was held with veterans marching from the RSL carpark to Freedom Park. Large numbers of veterans marched in both services to be recognised and honoured by the Hervey Bay community for their service to our nation. Anzac Day is our veterans' day for commemorative activities. Here at the Hervey Bay RSL we had 470 veterans return to the club for the Gunfire Breakfast and 575 veterans and partners for the lunch function. RSL clubs were established as a meeting place for veterans to enjoy. On Anzac Day, the club was closed to the public until 1pm so that the veterans could enjoy that time together.

We honour all veterans who have served in the armed services, and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Lest We Forget.

We have just completed upgrading and replacing the aged air conditioning units in the Anzac Sports Bar, with two new 54kilowatt units installed on the roof.

In addition, a large water cool chiller (over 300 kilowatt) to be used during cooler months will be installed adjacent to the plant room on the roof. This will replace the current unit, which has failed due to the age and corrosion. The Clubhouse has been trading soundly; however, we are still awaiting the approvals from Fraser Coast Regional Council for the upgrade to the building façade at the front of the club and carpark extension. On busy days, it is almost impossible to secure a carpark. The increase of 70 carpark spaces should assist greatly in this regard. Burpengary Community Club is going full steam ahead and is expected to be up and running by mid-June. Our full committee recently inspected the new venue for a walkthrough and many glowing comments were made. If any members are driving past, please pop in and have a look at the new club. The Burpengary Community Club is located on Henderson Road, opposite the Burpengary Railway Station.

the effort they put in. Guests staying at The Hervey Bay Motel on the Esplanade are sure to get a good night's sleep, with the beds now replaced in all the rooms. Bayswater Bar & Grill has also been trading well. The Hotel has also taken up the exciting opportunity to open a bottle shop in the Fraser Shores Shopping Centre. A plan has been developed by Bloc Design for the layout. We are currently waiting for the liquor licence approvals. Finally, a Covid-19 update. All patrons, staff and the committee must use the Queensland Government Covid-19 sign-in App when entering the club. Patrons without a mobile telephone can register via the iPad and sign in terminals at reception. This is a mandatory requirement from the State Government, Queensland Health and the Office of Liquor and Gaming, not from our RSL Club. We thank you for your patience during these busy times at reception.

Both of our motels are also seeing good occupancy numbers, especially the Comfort Inn on Main.

To make entry into the club more prompt, we encourage you to download to Check In Qld App before your visit.

Recently our Comfort Inn was awarded the Choice Hotel's Gold Award and Comfort Hotel of the Year for 2020.

OUT & ABOUT AT YOUR

CLUB

The club has been a hive of activity in April and May with guests dressed to impress at the Mad Hatters Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea, as well as feeling hot under the collar at the Sydney Hot Shots all-male review.

As the saying goes, girls just want to have fun … and a crowd of excited ladies did just that when the Sydney Hotshots boys appeared on stage in Hervey House recently. It was a night to remember with plenty of cheek, fun, laughter, plus hunky muscles and sultry dance moves that wowed the crowd.

Little Rissoles Kid’s Club

Lots of families visited the RSL on May 9 to show their appreciation for the special ladies in their life. Six of the lucky ladies will also be feeling fabulous after winning a luxury basket of goodies in the awesome Mother's Day Raffle. To all the motherfigures out there, we salute you!

Congratulations, to Hannah and Kadence, our Easter colouring competition winners.

TWO TIERS OF

SEAFOOD Delight SEAFOOD lovers unite! There’s a new and improved version of the Sandy Bay Restaurant’s seafood platter now available, and it’s an absolute showstopper. This mouth-watering two-tier platter was created by Hervey Bay RSL Executive Chef Mick Mielczarek in honour of the region's love affair with fresh, local seafood, and it doesn't disappoint. “Hervey Bay is such a beautiful place, with the ocean and Fraser Island right on our doorstep,” Mick said. “I wanted to create a seafood platter that really reflects how lucky we are to be able to source seafood that comes off local boats, and then directly to your plate.” It's the kind of meal that will make you the envy of your friends and family, and probably the restaurant when other

diners see it delivered to your table. It's also a great option for couple's celebrating a special occasion as it's made specially for two people to share.

But be warned, if you are ordering this platterfor-two for dinner, be sure to have a light meal for lunch because you won't want to leave any of this delicious feast on your plate.

The top tier comes with a hot and mighty selection of Oysters Kilpatrick sourced from the waters of Bribie Island, fried spiced prawns, salt & pepper crumbed calamari, beer battered salt-water barramundi, crispy beer battered steak chips, with a side of garden salad and coriander and lime mayo.

Our chefs take great pride in preparing this dish, so guests are asked to book the meal in 24 hours in advance, so it's prepared and ready for their arrival.

The second tier boasts an incredible array of cold seafood including local sand crabs, king prawns, Moreton Bay bugs, and Bribie Island natural oysters.

So, even if you're all grown up, this totally unique show coming to the Hervey Bay RSL is sure to reignite your love of prehistoric loungeroom battles. crowd enjoying the sell-out shows most times. The quirky cast includes a four metre-long and two-and-a-halfmetre high T-Rex named Toby, that just loves to carve up the dance floor with his dino-mite moves.

“The atmosphere is great with the kids roaring along it's so interactive and has lots of crowd participation.

“They will move and groove like you've never seen before,” Lisa said.

“We dabble into the educational side with some facts along the way.”

Joining the stars will be two Australian dinosaurs Ozzi the Weewarrasaurus and Oi the Qantasaurus, Trixie the Triceratops and some super cute T-Rex babies as well.

The 55-minute performance includes lots of singing, dancing and fact finding, and usually a lot of laughs from the kids and the adults … it's a real family show.” Guests are invited to meet and greet with the cast and the dinosaurs after the performance, and have their photo taken.

Lisa said it's a show where guests are invited to let their imagination run wild as they go on a gripping journey back through time to an age when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

COMMUNITY GRANTS

RSL supports the backbone of our community Hervey House was filled with beaming faces on April 29, where over 30 not-for-profit organisations, sporting groups and individuals received a share of over $200,000 at the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants presentations. Community Engagement Office Sarah Bailey Wilkinson said the grants celebrate and support individual achievements and those charities doing incredible work in the Hervey Bay region, with many unable to stay afloat without the RSL's financial support. “We know how tough it is for local notfor-profit groups, community groups and individuals, to get assistance and they are the ones that are serving the community and volunteering their time for the betterment of the region,” Mrs Bailey Wilkinson said. “The program was developed to ensure financial grants are spread amongst a range of deserving applicants through the supply of not only donations but in-kind donations and the use of the club's facilities.” Several cheques were presented on the day by local MP Adrian Tantari who praised the club's unique grants program.

activities, sporting groups and community groups that are here, I think it's a magnificent community grant program and long may it continue,” Mr Tantari said. “The grants are really important because what they do is give back to the community and that's the most important thing. “Communities are made and developed by individuals volunteering their time in various activities and aspects of the community and these grants go a long way in assisting those organisations to deliver that community spirit.” The most substantial grant awarded on the day was $30,000 to the Fraser Coast Chaplaincy Program. Those funds will ensure that children don't go hungry with $10,000 allocated to a nutritious Breakfast Club program

at public schools across the Hervey Bay region, and a further $20,000 will see a chaplain placed at Urangan State High School.

club because while they're having a good time out, they are also helping to give back to the Fraser Coast Community through these grants.

The RSL Bay Alley and RSL Bub Hub & Playground, as part of The Neighbourhood Hive, received $10,000 to help establish a 'messy' community space where locals can try something new, connect with like-minded people or start a project they've always dreamed of but never had the space for.

“We are the only venue in Hervey Bay that runs this kind of community program and we're very proud to have been able to assist countless not-forprofit organisations, sporting groups and individuals in the past 10 years.

Other recipients include $5300 to Hervey Bay Touch Association, $3000 to Meals on Wheels Fraser Community, $4450 to Pialba Bowls Club, $3000 to Cosmos Netball Club, $500 to the Hervey Bay Parkinson's Support Group, $500 to Hervey Bay Art Society, and many more.

In the 2020 financial year, $466,958 in grants, donations, in-kind support and sponsorship was granted, and over $400,000 has already been distributed in 2021 financial year, with more to come.

Mrs Bailey Wilkinson also gave special thanks to patrons who support the

“And it's only through the support of our patrons that we can continue to do that.”

ABOUT 95 people took a trip down the rabbit hole (aka Hervey House) on March 23 for the Fraser Coast Fundraising Group’s Mad Hatter and Easter-themed Australia's Biggest Morning Tea. Guests in wonderfully decorated top hats and dazzling costumes helped make the day a terrific success, raising over $3500 for Cancer Council Queensland. As the FCFG group's biggest fundraiser of the year, coordinator Robyn Hicks said it was wonderful to see so many people turn to show their support especially as last year's event was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

“I am one of those who have been through it,” Robyn said.

“A had a lot of support through my treatment and 11 years later I'm cancer free. “Six of my family members have gone through cancer as well so that's why I volunteer and fundraise.

“Without all that we just wouldn't be where we are.”

She said special thanks must go to local businesses who donated raffle prizes and the Hervey Bay RSL who gave a $1500 Community Grant to help cover the cost of the food, as well as free use of Hervey House for the morning. (You can see more pictures from the event on page 5.)

The group fundraise under the umbrella of Cancer Council Queensland with all money raised going directly to providing assistance towards the services and support that CCQ offers, as well as an investment into vital research and education programs to increase the awareness of cancer and its wide-reaching effects.

COMMUNITY GRANTS (CONTINUED)

TOURISM VENTURE

steaming along

A Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant has helped get the ball rolling for one of the region's biggest tourism ventures. A dream to build the Nikenbah Historical Railway Village & Miniature Railway is now steaming along, which was the brainchild of Hervey Bay's Richard Horniblow. His family have always had a passion for trains, with his great great grandfather Henry having a hand in designing the first steam trains for the former Walkers Engineering in Maryborough. Mr Horniblow collected hundreds of items from the bygone era over the years including many pieces from Walkers and the old Nikenbah Railway Station, which will take pride of place at the historical railway village. With a five-man committee at the helm including fellow enthusiasts Paul Hance and Allan Mullaly, the team is seeking to lease a 1,39ha site on the corner of Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road and Chapel Road from Fraser Coast Regional Council. The committee have now prepared a development plan to be approved by council, with a Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant of $1125 helping to

“Richard also has a mile of photographs … the list just goes on and on.”

cover the cost of professional fees. The exciting master plan envisages a much-loved tourist attraction for the young and young at heart, with two miniature locomotives already acquired to run on the 1800-metre dual mini rail system.

Once formally approved by council, the first steps for the project will be to clear the land and install security fencing around the perimeter. Being a not-for-profit organisation, Mr Hance said the committee will rely heavily on community donations and successful government grants.

The plan also includes getting a Queensland Rail Carriage to be converted into a kiosk, the old Nikenbah station will be moved to the site, as well as building a train station waiting area, train museum and craft building, equipment workshop, oil light shed, Urangan Station and a Walligan waiting room.

Here's a few ways the community can help. Businesses can come on board as a sponsor of the project. Businesses can place a train donation box on their counter. Individuals and businesses can find details of how to donate on the Nikenbah Historical Railway Village Facebook page.

The master plan may take years to come to fruition, but he is confident that, bit by bit, their dream will become a reality.

Hundreds of historic items will be on display including lanterns, signage, trolleys, clocks, scales, switchgear, telephones, plus heavy rail equipment and much more. “It's certainly a big project,” Mr Mullaly said. “A lot of this stuff you wouldn't know what it is so I think it will be a lot of interest to both adults and children, and very educational.

RSL A BACKBOARD FOR

Hurricanes THE representative season for the Hervey Bay Hurricanes basketball usually sees the under 18s team play three Central District Carnivals in Bundaberg, Gladstone and Rockhampton, plus state championships between November and January. With at least nine players, a coach, assistant coach and manager all travelling together, transport to the games is no easy feat, unless you have wheels like Digger – one of the RSL's bold gold courtesy buses. Being involved in sport keeps youth active, teaches teamwork and gives them an opportunity to make new friends, which is why the club is only

too happy to help get the teams to competitions. Team Manager Cindy Donald said being able to use the bus meant that the whole team could travel together and provide an opportunity for more diversity in the game by competing outside of the region.

“It also gives them desire to play better. “We're very grateful for the RSL's help in getting the boys to their competitions.”

ADVENTURE AWAITS LEADERS at the Pialba Scout Group are helping to build resilient and confident local youth aged 5 to 25 in the Joey Scout, Cub Scout, Scout, Venturer Scout and Rover Scout sections. The not-for-profit group is one of the biggest Scouting bodies in the district with 82 members, which includes 11 leaders, and there's always training to be done.

“Training helps us teach the Youth Members all there is to know about Scouting,” Carol said.

Knowing that the group is providing Fraser Coast children and young adults with fun and challenging opportunities to grow through adventure, the Hervey Bay RSL was only too happy to assist with training costs by awarding a $1500 Community Grant.

“On a Training camp, Leaders camp as if they are Scouts. This gives them an understanding of how it all works. They put together and sleep in a Queensland Patrol tent like the Scouts would in many camping situations, plus do all the risk assessments and paperwork that comes with being a Scout Leader.”

Group Leader Carol Britton said the funds will make a huge difference to the Scouts with eight of the current leaders needing to complete three training camps each, in Brisbane, at a cost of $180 per camp. She said the leaders are always striving to better themselves in order to make a difference in young people's lives and the training is an integral part of that.

she said. “We try to pay a portion for the Youth Members to go otherwise a lot of Youth Members don't go because the parents can't afford it.”

“We all have to be qualified to do what we do.

Leaders undertake courses such as leadership training, management, adventure skills, archery, abseiling, canoeing, hiking, water rescue, survival skills and four-wheel driving amongst others. The programs that Scout Leaders deliver, support young people in reaching their potential by taking part in adventurous activities appropriate to their age group and level of ability.

Carol said having the grant approved means that the group can use their fundraising efforts to help keep costs down for the families involved, especially with many camping trips planned for this year.

Carol said the outdoor programs endow the Scouts, especially the young adults, with more independence, selfconfidence, resilience and skills to work in a team.

“Getting the grant enables us to allocate more money to the Youth Members camping trips and activities,”

The Scouts are Youth Lead, with adult support.

“Their growing maturity and skills are of immeasurable benefit to the community and are utilised to mentor younger members into developing the same skills and community-focused attitude,” she said. “Pialba Scout Group is all about contributing to the education of young people through a value system based on a Scout Promise and Law, to help build a better world where people are self-fulfilled as individuals and play a constructive role in society. “It just makes such a big difference in their lives. “If I wasn't a part of Scouting my kids wouldn't get these opportunities. All of us Leaders are volunteers and we just love Scouting!” To join or find out more, find them on Facebook under Pialba Scout Group – Hervey Bay.

STAFF PROFILE

sUE SMITH

MEET your friendly floor Manager, Sue Smith. Sue Smith started her career in superannuation, but quickly found out that being confined to an office chair just wasn't for her. At 18 and still finding her feet, she walked through the doors of the Penrith RSL and that's where her long and successful career in hospitality began. “I couldn't handle sitting in one spot,” Sue said. “I gave hospitality a go and I have loved it ever since.” A position working behind the bar at the Hervey Bay RSL was her first official job in Hervey Bay a year later. The club looked a lot different back then, with the Anzac Lounge and memorabilia located where Poppies

“I have really liked everything I've done at the club.

Café is now, and the bottle shop was at the side of the building where the staff entrance is now.

“I just love the whole team I work with … everyone works together and it's a really great environment to work in.

Sue said she loved the work and it was only that her husband received a job offer in Sydney that she left the club.

“Out of all the places I've worked in, this one is by far the best and I feel lucky to be part of the team.”

She went on to develop her skills at different venues around Australia for several years' but work eventually brought the family back to Hervey Bay in 2014, and Sue back to the RSL.

Patrons may have noticed that all RSL staff have a smile printed on the back of their uniforms which shows a commitment to customer service.

Now seven years on, Sue has worked in bar and gaming and a casual supervisor role before becoming a fulltime Floor Manager.

For Sue, seeing customers walk away with a smile is one of the greatest rewards of her job.

The RSL is Sue's second home for four nights a week, where she's a muchloved staff member and a friendly face to many regular patrons.

“If you know that they aren't having a good day, it's nice to try and make their day, have a bit of fun with them and make sure they have a good

Sue Smith experience when they come out. “Sometimes all people need is for me to ask; “How's your day today?”, and it makes them feel better. Giving a smile ends up being contagious. “It's nice to be a part of that.”

ANZAC DAY

AUSSIE PRIDE

Following a year where residents and veterans were confined to their driveways for Anzac Day, there was an “incredible” show of Australian spirit as the Hervey Bay community gathered in the centre of town. About 200 veterans and service personnel marched from the RSL carpark to the Pialba Cenotaph for both the dawn and main services, while thousands of people lined the streets to watch on and pay their respects. Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman was delighted to see the services so well attended. “There was a hell of a lot of people at the dawn service and the main service was the same,” Mr Tidyman said. “It was so wonderful to see so many people turn out. “Even in my street, people still had poppies and Lest We Forget signs out and that was very nice to see.” Mr Tidyman was also thrilled to see increased numbers of young veterans take part in this year's services. “I was very pleased to see that there were so may young veterans enjoying themselves because they are the future of the RSL Sub-Branch.”

had a wonderful day.

While school students and community groups were sorely missed in this year's march due to Covid restrictions, Mr Tidyman said the day “almost felt normal”.

“The food was absolutely spot on. “The way they all looked after us just made the day even better.”

Especially with the diggers being able to head back to the RSL for a Gunfire Breakfast and Anzac Day lunch, where they raised a glass to fallen mates, told tales and exchanged yarns – something that was sorely missed last year.

THE SUB-BRANCH PRESIDENTS REPORT Anzac Day has been and gone and on behalf of all Veterans, I would like to thank everyone who attended the services.

“It was just good to have the day back compared to last year … we were just grateful that we could go ahead.

Half of 2021 has already gone, and Christmas will be here before we know it!

“Last year, while the driveway business was good, when I went back inside it was flat.

The new staff at the Veterans Wellbeing section are very busy with new clients, especially with an influx of veterans moving to the region.

“There were no mates. It just didn't feel right. This year, it was spot on.” Mr Tidyman said all the staff at the RSL also helped make the day so special.

THE

CLUBHOUSE HERVEY BAY

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE WITH

winter-warmers

AS the cooler winter nights start to creep in, the Clubhouse Bar & Grill has some added some warmth to their brand-new menu. Head Chef Duane Ditton has created a selection of culinary winter-warmer delights with a mix of some delicious new selections, as well old favourites still making an appearance.

The fried calamari will be popular with those who like to spice up their meals, with the entrée now served with Romesco sauce, rocket and a chilli salad.

Starting with the entrees, the fresh Hervey Bay Scallops is still on the menu but is served with different condiments weekly.

“The Romesco is a Spanish paste sauce that has a blend of tomatoes, capsicums and nuts.

“The scallops are fresh from our local fisheries and are just the same, except it could be served with a puree, crumb or salad … it's just been changed up so it's not the same dish each week. “There's a bit of chef's creation that comes with it each time.”

Kids Eat Free

Kids eat free every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday nights.

“It does have chilli in it, so it does pack a bit of a punch.” Steamed Mussels in Crazy Water has also been a popular choice, which is an Italian fishermen's dish with tomatoes, herbs, chilli and salted water, served with crispy bread.

Tempt your tastebuds with something just a little bit different like the Confit Duck Cassoulet with white beans, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, onion and crispy bread.

The Best Little Club in the Bay! Steak lovers will also be impressed, with chef Duane adding a rib fillet and rump steak to the menu. The choice of Porterhouse and the very popular 250g Fillet Mignon are still available. “Being the Clubhouse Bar & Grill, I thought we should utilise that,” Duane said. “So, we now have four awesome steaks on the menu.” The pizza menu still boasts the classics like BBQ Meatlovers, Margherita and Hawaiian, but for those who want a little taste of Italy right here in Hervey Bay – then give the new selections a go.

“I just wanted to take what I have learnt from working with other chefs, combine it with several different ideas and put it all together.

INAUGURAL

“The menu has been well received so far. Everyone is enjoying the range of different flavours and the presentation of the meals.” Of course, the best way to sample what's on offer is to go along and give it a try. The Clubhouse is open seven days from 10am to late. Phone 4124 1177 to make a booking.

The Puttanesca, Pepporoni, Sopressa, Salsiccia and Capricciosa pizzas are all chef's creations and have been well received since the new menu started last month.

Defence Force Golf Challenge On Anzac Day, we ran the Inaugural Defence Force Golf Challenge alongside the Daily Competition that was run by the Club. We took the opportunity to perform a Wreath Laying Ceremony prior to the days play. Although we had some technical issues, the Ceremony was a great success having at least 50-60 Ex-Service Members and Club members present. We had 25 Ex-Service Members from our Golf Club participate in the Challenge with ARMY coming out on top. Well done to Graham Parker and his team. The event was sponsored by the Pro Shop and the Shield will be proudly displayed behind the counter until the next battle.

There is also a variety of gluten free and vegetarian options available.
