SALUTE
to the fallen Fraser Coast residents will be able to mark Anzac Day on April 25, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announcing that Dawn Services, marches and public commemorations can all go ahead this year. It was welcome news for Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman, who was determined that COVID-19 would not stop local diggers from honouring the fallen this year.
While it was gratifying to see residents turn out on their driveways, Mr Tidyman said as a veteran, nothing can compare to standing at the cenotaph at first light for the Dawn Service.
Instead of heading back to the RSL for an iconic rum on Anzac Day in 2020, Mr Tidyman poured a glass at home, watched the live telecast of the service from Canberra and later laid a wreath at the Freedom Park cenotaph – a shift in routine that left himself and many fellow veterans feeling lost.
Mr Tidyman said its origin stems from Reverend Arthur Earnest White, who moved from England to Albany in Western Australia in 1912 after weeks aboard the SS Persic.
“You stand and look down into King George Sound, and it's eerie,” Mr Tidyman said. “There's a museum there now and a plaque naming every ship.” The first official Dawn Service was held at Sydney’s Cenotaph during 1928. The simple ceremony was for veterans to assemble for a ‘stand-to and two minutes of silence. “The Dawn Service is the ex-services parade,” Mr Tidyman said.
In November 1914, history books show that the Reverend and many locals climbed Mt Clarence to watch as 60 or more ships left for the Great War in Europe.
“It's the one where we remember our mates. “The Main Service is for the public to pay their respects and that's why we only allow veterans to march in the Dawn Service.
While some of these ships stopped by Fremantle, others didn't and for many of the troops the green hills of Albany were their last sight of Australia.
“We all lost mates and that's something we all unfortunately have in common.”
Several went straight to Egypt for training before being dropped at Gallipoli on the morning of April 25, 1915.
April 25 and November 11, Remembrance Day, are two of the most poignant days honoured and celebrated by veterans and both fell victim to the Coronavirus Pandemic last year, with all services cancelled. Many Fraser Coast residents and veterans instead held Light up the Dawn driveway vigils on Anzac Day.
The veterans will step-off from the RSL for the Dawn Service march at about 5.15am, and again for the Main March at about 10am.
On February 24, 1918, and after spending time on Western Front late in 1916 as a “Padre”, Rev White held a service for the fallen at the bottom of the Mt Clarence summit, where a boatman cast a wreath into King George Sound (Albany's harbour) to coincide with the ceremony.
Due to ongoing restrictions, only ex-service personnel will march on the day. The main service will also have a special focus on Air Force 100 – Centenary of Air Force, including an address from ex-RAAF personnel.
In 1923, it is believed that Rev White conducted Australia's first unofficial Anzac Dawn Service at the same summit, known widely as the “Diggers Service”.
Mr Tidyman said social distancing will still be a key part of the public services,
with those who want to show their respects doing so independently.
If the public would like to come, they certainly can, but the onus is on them to keep their distance. Veterans will then return to the Hervey Bay RSL for a closed function, where they will be sure to raise a glass or two to their fallen mates, tell tales and exchange yarns – something that was sorely missed last year. The RSL will then open to the public from 12pm, with the café open at this time. The gaming room will open at 1pm. Two-up will also be held in Hervey House from 1pm.
SERVICES
GUNFIRE BREAKFAST Sub-Branch members who would like to attend the Gunfire Breakfast from 6am at the RSL, MUST BOOK their ticket at the Sub-Branch or RSL Administration (Level 2) between 9.30am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, between March 21 and April 21, 2021.
The Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch will hold COVID safe Commemoration Services at the Light Horse War Memorial in Freedom Park, Pialba. Due to ongoing restrictions, only ex-service personnel will take part in both marches this year. DAWN SERVICE: The Dawn Service march will leave the RSL Club at about 0515 hours and the service will start when the march has entered Freedom Park at about 0530 hours.
Sub-Branch members are allowed one guest or carer per commemoration service and function. Wristbands can be collected at the Sub-Branch between 9.30am and 1pm, Monday to Friday, between March 21 and April 21, 2021.
MAIN SERVICE: The Main March will step-off from the RSL carpark at about 1000 (10am) hours and move to Freedom Park. The service will commence at 1030 hours.
Due to ongoing restrictions, wristbands will NOT be issued on the day.
If you are feeling unwell, please stay at home. Residents are still welcome to pay their respects in their driveway should they choose to.

Rebecca O'Conner was no doubt 'Simply the Best' at the Tina Turner Tribute Show on March 13. Hervey House was pumping to the tunes of the iconic rock legend. The audience couldn't help but stand up and get grooving to some of Tina's greatest hits, which of course included her anthem, Simply the Best!
It was awesome to see all the members and guests who got their green on for St Patrick's Day on March 17, including one lucky patron who walked away with a gift hamper for being best dressed on the day. He just loved music from an early age and as his career as a musician progressed, so did his love of Billy Joel's music.
“Then we took it to venues all around the country and its been fantastic.”
Therein lies the start of his incredibly successful musical career.
“There was no charade, no gimmicks, he was just a regular guy who plays great music!
After hearing time after time from the audience that he even looked like his idol, Mara decided to take his passion to the next level, and five years ago the Billy Joel Tribute Show was born.
“In a club atmosphere we find that it just turns into a great party atmosphere that people really enjoy, especially reminiscing on some of the many great hits Billy had.”
“He has said over his journey he's no sex symbol, he's an honest musician and that's what he's all about. “There's no rehearsing moves or anything like that and it came across really well.”
“As I got older, I looked back at his (Joel's) previous work and fell in love with the singer-songwriter sort of artist and I love the story telling element to

tribute to one of the best-selling artists of all time, with Mara and the crew belting out hits like the Piano Man, New York State of Mind, Honesty, We Didn't Start the Fire and of course, the song that started it all, Uptown Girl.
On May 22, Mara and his band will appear at the Hervey Bay RSL for the first time where he promises the audience will be up on their feet dancing by the second half of the show.
Mara witnessed Joel in the flesh at a concert in 1991 and said he loved the fact that he was just himself on stage.
Mara was a part of a cover band in Adelaide for over 25 years and would often play Joel's greatest hits as part of the show.
“What I have stressed over the five years is that I'm not up there impersonating Billy Joel … we are paying tribute to his music.
Mara has taken that same attribute and applied it to his own performances.

COMMUNITY GRANTS
bay club bowled over by support IN an era where children are spending more time inside on devices rather than outside on a sporting field, one local club is doing what they can to keep local youth active.
Cricket has been one of Australia's primary sports for over 100 years and in Hervey Bay it's honoured well with about 160 members on the books at the Hervey Bay Cricket Association. The club was formed in the early 1980s to ensure locals had the chance to take part in the great Australian sport. On weekends, the field on Walkers Rd in Urangan is a hive of activity with junior and senior players taking to the field, which is always a great sight for President Justin Geldard.

running an all-girls competition on Thursday nights, with about 20 players of all ages taking part.
“This in turn allows HBCA to cap our registration fees and absorb these costs instead of passing them onto the player.
Justin said this just wouldn't be possible without financial assistance from sponsors like the RSL.
“Our junior rego fees have not increased for the last three years as a result of the sponsorship received from the RSL.”
The Hervey Bay RSL recognises the benefits of having the sport in the region and is a major sponsor of the association through their Community Grants Program.
“Cricket is part of our cultural heritage,” Justin said.
Justin said the donation of $7500 each year goes towards uniforms and equipment, which in turn helps keep membership costs down.
The association has also been able to expand junior competitions and playing numbers including Stage 1 competitions in Hervey Bay, Stage 2 around the Fraser Coast and Stage 3 in Bundaberg.

roll together THE slab is down, and the plans are set for some exciting extensions happening at the Hervey Bay Bowls and Social Club thanks to a $5000 grant from the Hervey Bay RSL. About 210 members of the Pialba club are looking forward to seeing a new outdoor barbeque and beer garden come to fruition, with the project being in the works for the last three years. The construction also includes an undercover carport with the back and sides enclosed, tables and chairs, barbeque, and a shelf table around the perimeter, which was completed in March. Chairman Denis Hackman said members, residents and guests from all over Queensland are set to benefit

Guests can bring their own food to cook and beverages are available to buy from the club's bar. “We're really hoping to draw more members and visitors to the club,” Mr Hackman said. “We had a group of 120 schoolteachers on January 22 come along and play bowls … that's just one of the groups that could benefit from

A HAVEN FOR
women in crisis
FIFTY-TWO local women have turned to Myriam Cottage in times of crisis. “We have successfully supported our residents move into personal and government housing accommodation and they themselves have referred people found sleeping in cars and other less than appropriate shelters. The three-bedroom house in Scarness opened in November 2016 so that women with no other place to go could feel safe in short, medium and long-term accommodation.
“Myriam Cottage is the only service providing long-term accommodation in Hervey Bay, and has a long waiting list which speaks loudly about the need for this service.
The house was bought and opened by Hervey Bay's Marie Gibbon, who said it was her mother Myriam's unfulfilled dream to buy a house to accommodate the less fortunate.
“Also needed is appropriate supportive housing for women with children.”
With proceeds from her mother's estate, Myriam's wish was granted. “When all my siblings came to visit on the Easter after the death of our mother, I expressed my burning desire to make our mum's dreams become a reality,” Marie said.
The cottage is run by a group of volunteers, who help the guests gain valuable life skills through cooking and cleaning classes, therapy, budgeting, self-esteem building exercises, and supporting them to find employment.
“They all agreed and a cottage in Hervey Bay was purchased and Myriam cottage was born.” Most referrals come from Mental Health Unit Outpatients, Head Space, Domestic Violence, Social Workers, Case managers, and community members, with the women all homeless for reasons beyond their control.
That's where the Hervey Bay RSL has dug deep to offer its support for the not-for-profit organisation. The home's washing machine was
beyond repair and a safety issue surrounded a tree on the land, which needed removal. Thanks to the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program, Myriam Cottage received $1900 towards covering the cost of replacing the washing machine, removing the tree and replacing the natural shade with a shade sail, which is frequently used by the ladies. “The RSL has been supportive in providing us with necessary equipment such as a printer, and now household support like the washing machine which is excellent. “There's no more hassles with repairs and it's big enough to wash essential items like doonas, sheets and towels, constantly needed in a place like ours.” Marie said the RSL grant came at a great time, with their ability to fundraise hindered during the Covid19 crisis.
KEEPING SCORES
out of the pool WHEN running a sporting club, it's important that keeping entries, scores and membership details up to date, which is difficult on old and outdated computers and software. That's no longer an issue for the Hervey Bay Humpbacks Swimming Club who have a shiny new Asus VivoBook laptop and Meet Manager software thanks to a $1700 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant. After booting up in 1988 under the former name of Pelicans, the group has played host to two Queensland Championships, a plethora of swim meets, presentation dinners and club meets once a week at the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre. Of course, each event requires the use of a reliable computer. “All swim meet information like entries, results and all reports are done on the Meet Manager programme which we
will run on the new laptop,” said President Paula Hewitt. “Results can then be automatically sent to State and National results sites. “Our previous laptop was old and was not able to support the new version of Meet Manager.
Paula said the members' aged 18 and above, from all walks of life and of all shapes and sizes, love to encourage others to join in with the club's fitness, friendship and fun goals.
“We are very grateful for the support we have received from the RSL in many ways over the years of our operation and look forward to a great working relationship into the future.” Adult swimmers of all levels are warmly welcomed to join a journey of fun, fitness and good health when they sign up with the Hervey Bay Humpbacks Swimming Club.

“You need not be a highly competitive swimmer or even want to compete,” she said.
The club is run under the Masters Swimming Australia, whose mission is to provide at club, state and national level an environment to encourage all adults, regardless of ability, to swim regularly and compete in order to promote fitness and improve their general well-being.
“Humpbacks are a friendly group who enjoy several social outings away from the pool and have fun when travelling

HANDS-ON TRAINING
from the best SEEING young high school students grow in confidence, gain valuable life skills, and get a taste of working life before leaving school, is a major highlight of the school-based traineeship program undertaken by the Hervey Bay RSL. Assistant Manager and HR Manager Janeen Holmes said the placements are designed to provide better employment opportunities for local youth, with most studying a Certificate III in Hospitality and working in the bistro, café and bar area. On average, the club takes on 18 school-based trainees per year, with 116 students having had the opportunity to learn and grow at the club between March 2013 and November 2020. A number of those students who excelled during their traineeships have even gone on to become part of the RSL team. Janeen said it's important to give the students an opportunity to learn hands-on skills that will assist them well into the future. “If they are going to continue to university, they will have more employment opportunities in the cities if they have hospitality skills, and certainly from working at the Hervey Bay RSL Club,” Janeen said.
“It's also important to retain students in our local community so they can be close to home with support from their parents. “It is exciting to see our students, during the traineeship, gain confidence and experience to achieve their goals and in general gain life skills by being employed.”
started, said she was grateful for the chance to get a feel for the industry in such a supportive environment.
The traineeship takes about a year to complete, which is assisted by a Club Training Australia trainer who comes on site every six weeks for the theory component of the course.
“I was only young, so I didn't really know what I wanted to do, so having the opportunity to come on (as a trainee) and get a feel for what it was like was great,” Shauna said.
Janeen said the students also have the bonus of being buddied up with some of the most experienced hospitality stars in the region.
“I just love the people and the staff here are just amazing.
Shauna Nicoletti proved herself as a hardworking trainee about five years ago and as a result was employed by the club.
“I'm such a shy person and having had that support gave me the confidence to be able to talk to people.” Shauna said a great aspect of the traineeship was being welcomed into a real-life working environment while gaining a qualification, instead of just sitting in a classroom.
She is now a supervisor in Poppies Café and the Sandy Bay Bistro. Shauna, who was a shy Year 11 Xavier Catholic College student when she
“They didn't just have you doing the paperwork; it was a lot of one-on-one training and if you needed anything you could just ask. “The study side of it wasn't just theory it was hands-on.” By offering this sort of quality training, Janeen said the investment is beneficial for both the individual and the club. “By training our staff in techniques to perform their job better for the club, staff directly benefit by reduced customer complaints, improved skills to obtain other positions outside of our club, and better promotion opportunities. “Often students also receive formal certification to add to their resume.”
Guests also receive 20% off all meals at the Hervey Bay RSL and The Clubhouse Hervey Bay. *Blockout dates apply - unavailable school holidays & public holidays. Offer for 2 people. RSL members receive an extra 10% dining discount, non members receive a 20% dining discount.

ONE SHIFT TURNS INTO
29 years
Shona McMahon learnt to be a whizz behind the bar after leasing a pub with her husband Michael out west in Tara for nine years. After moving to Hervey Bay, and Michael getting a job at the RSL, it was no surprise that he called on Shona to lend a hand when three out of the 25 staff called in sick before a big function. Shona came along and helped behind the bar and now, 29 years later, is still a highly valued member of the RSL team. “I vowed and declared that I wasn't going back into hospitality, and guess what … I'm still here, Shona said with a laugh.

“In the bar you had to know how to do everything and if need be you would help clear plates, and when the pokies came in you would just do whatever you were needed to do.
There were only about 2000 members at the time in comparison to the 29,690 members the club has today. About six months after Shona started, 12 poker machines arrived, followed by renovations and the introduction of a bottle shop, which Shona helped run for many years.
“I remember coming in one Christmas Day and washing up.”
Sho na McMahon and is grateful for the opportunity to have met so many lovely people over the years.
There isn't much that Shona hasn't done in her time with the club, apart from working in the kitchen.
Back when Shona started at the club, there was only one level, and the main entertainment was old time dancing on Friday nights, and a rock 'n' roll band called Step Back would travel from Bundaberg once a month.
“I was lucky enough to go away to other clubs in New south Wales to see how the poker machines all worked … it was a huge learning curve when they first came to Queensland.”

FOOD
The sharing of food has brought people together since the beginning of time to make friends, build relationships, celebrate milestones, mend conflicts and just love life.
Sam W hefeldon
Sam Crocker - C
When a job for a Chef de partie became available at the Hervey Bay RSL about four years ago, Sam jumped at the opportunity to apply.
It's that very reason that Sam Crocker decided to become a chef.
Since then she has worked in the bistro at the RSL, The Bayswater Bar & Grill and is now a valued member of the team at The Clubhouse Hervey Bay.
The 29-year-old said she just loves the way that food speaks a universal language.
She said a highlight of working at the club was the wonderful team and the vibrant menu on offer, which
“It brings everyone together and that's the beautiful thing about it,” Sam said. Sam started her career as a school-based trainee in the kitchen of a small bowls club in Bribie Island and later went on to travel the world. “I travelled the world and had fun. Cooking has been what I have done for the majority of my life and it's what I love.”

incorporates lots of fresh local vegetables and seafood. “I love experimenting and I love when the food is fresh. “I'm a regular at the markets.” The local flash fried whiting is consistently a favourite with patrons as is the scallops, the signature fillet mignon, crispy pork belly and a flavour-packed coconut curry chicken salad. The grilled chicken supreme with prawns and avocado are always a hit, as is the grilled barramundi and salmon, topped with an avocado and mango salsa. The menu is extensive, with a variety of gluten free and vegetarian options also available. Lunch specials, which change each fortnight, are available Monday to Friday for just $12. It's a very popular option for golfers who have just come off the greens looking for a bite to eat and a cold drink.
The café is also open with the club's famous lemon meringue pie in the cabinet most days, but you have to be quick to get a slice of that pie. With Easter and Mother’s Day coming up, it's the perfect time to arrange a get together with family and friends at The Clubhouse Hervey Bay.
The club is open seven days from 10am to late. Phone 4124 1177.

sea change
AFTER working in inner-city Melbourne restaurants for the past 13 years, the Coronavirus pandemic gave Brad Selkrig the opportunity to seize the sea change he had been looking for. Signature Wagyu Rib Fillet, sourced from Rangers Valley – one of the world's most respected premium marbled beef producers.
calamari and reef fish, tossed through with some incredible flavouring like garlic, chilli, basil, tomato, parmesan and fresh lemon.
With family now close by, the Bayswater's new executive chef feels right at home, being able to take his children to the beach and cast a line from the iconic Urangan Pier. “I just love the view from the Bayswater, and having the ability to walk along the beach and go fishing after work … I just love being by the beach,” Brad said.
Last but certainly not least is the Bayswater Angus Beef Burger, stacked with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion rings, tomato relish and served with a side of chips.
His love of the ocean is also the inspiration behind the venue's new menu, which puts the region's fresh local seafood in the spotlight.
Brad's main goal as a chef has always been to satisfy the taste buds of the patrons he serves, and he believes this menu does just that.
Chef's top three pics from the menu, created with the help of Catering Manager Exec Chef Mick Mielczarek, includes The Citrus and Chilli Fried School Prawns entrée, with paprika aioli and lemon.
“I've been cooking since I was 15, I've always had a passion for it and I just love to please the customers.
If you're popping in for a light meal or a sweet treat, then the venue's new Gelato and Pizza Bar is just the ticket, with dine-in or takeaway options available. The new café-style area is also now open and includes a pizza oven. Guests can choose from 20 styles of pizza, including the traditional Hawaiian to prosciutto, fig, goats' cheese and candy walnut. Calzones and some specialty dessert pizzas will also be on offer. Be sure to save room for an ice cream for dessert with a myriad of delicious gelato flavours to choose from, which rotate regularly.
“I love to make sure people are happy with the quality of the food and the feedback for the new menu has been really good so far, so that's been great.”
Next is the very popular Seafood Risotto, packed with lots of protein from fresh prawns, scallops, mussels,
Come along and sample all the flavours, old and new, that Bayswater has to offer. You won't be disappointed!

Beth will be delighted to serve you our delicious Seafood Risotto.
