Staff from the Hervey Bay RSL, Bayswater and The Clubhouse were treated to a delicious Christmas staff breakfast as a thank you for all their hard work during the year. A special thanks must go to the managers and catering staff who gave up their time to help serve the amazing buffet.

If any of our guests were overdue for a good laugh, then they sure got their fix at the recent Morning Melody Show with Davo Mitchell.

The comedy impressionist thrilled patrons with hilarious impressions of Elvis, Dame Edna, Chad Morgan and more. Thanks for the laughs, Davo.

It's clear that Fraser Coast residents can get enough of 70s and 80s tunes, with both of the Dreams – Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks shows being fully sold out last month. Guests were treated to two hours of non-stop tunes with many singing along to some of the era's biggest hits.

COMMUNITY GRANTS

Snag some funds with free community BBQ WHEN trying to raise funds, there's no better way for not-for-profit community groups and organisations to build up the bank than by hosting a good old-fashioned sausage sizzle.

However, buying a barbecue big enough to cater for the masses is often financially out of reach for the volunteers.

Club is one of many not-for-profit organisations to cook up a fundraising storm, including a sausage sizzle at BCF late last year.

Hervey Bay RSL Community Engagement Officer Sarah Bailey Wilkinson said the club recognised the demand and filled the gap by purchasing the RSL Community BBQ Trailer 12 months ago, which any notfor-profit community groups or organisations can use for free.

President John Lindsay said the club raised over $300 on the day.

The $15,000 set up comes complete with an eight-burner barbecue, two pull-out eskies, a table and a marquee.

“It has helped considerably as we were not in a financial state to buy a barbecue, so it was of great benefit to be able to use the RSL trailer,” he said.

“Hosting a sausage sizzle is always a great way for volunteers to raise funds … who can resist the smell of sausages and onions cooking on the barbecue,” Sarah said.

“It's a great set-up, easy to use and all they need to supply is the gas bottle and cooking utensils.”

John said being able to hire the barbecue for free meant that all the funds raised could go towards keeping the club running and subsidising activities for its predominately senior members.

“Most of our members are pensioners and can't afford to splash out on big things so we fundraise to help them get out and about, maintain an interest and get to go fishing.

“It just gets the old blokes out rather than staying at home. We get out in the fresh air; it's good exercise and

we sit down in the afternoon when we get back and just have a good yarn.

“It's great mentally for everyone to have that interaction.

In the 2020 financial year, $466,958 in donations and in-kind support was granted as part of the Community Grants Program.

As part of that, $36,000 was approved to We Care 2 to cover the cost of their counselling services, $21,000 to Volunteer Marine Rescue to cover running cots of the boats and, $20,000 to the Hervey Bay PCYC, which helps run vital programs for at risk youth and young women.

“We Care 2 help those who need a hand up, marine rescue ultimately save lives and youth in need would be lost

without the programs that PCYC provide … all these services, and all the others we help, make the region a better place,” Sarah said.

“We are proud to be a part of that.”

Applications for the next round of Community Grants will open on March 1st and close on March 19th.

Presentations will be held in June/July.

FRASER Coast veterans, former and current members of the Defence Force and their dependents, all have a solid shoulder to lean on when it comes to their well-being.

As part of their ongoing commitment to service personal, the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch offers a free Pensions and Compensation Advocacy Service that is staffed and operated by fully qualified advocates and wellbeing support officers.

Sub-Branch president Brian Tidyman said the well-being section is supported by 18 visitation officers who see veterans' in their homes, nursing homes and hospitals, to provide some mateship and make sure all their needs are being met.

SPORTING NEW FASHION

on the field WEARING a sports uniform can unite players visually, give a sense of pride in representing a club and make it easier to recognise which team athletes are playing for.

At the Hervey Bay Athletics Club, members are stepping out on the field looking their best in all new uniforms thanks to a $2000 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant.

Uniform convenor Sharon Hay said donning the uniforms was great for members self-esteem and a feeling of inclusion.

She said the club is a place where personal bests are celebrated, everyone gets to have a go and it also promotes good health and fitness.

“Having a uniform makes the kids feel like they belong,” Sharon said.

Long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus, shot put and running, are some of the popular sports enjoyed by members.

“The shirts give the members a sense of pride when they represent the club, not just locally but when they go to state events too.”

Sharon said the inclusive club welcomes all keen track and field athletes, of any age, with four

represent their schools, the region and at state and national events.

Sharon's son Jeremiah, 18, is a multiclass athlete who joined the club at a young age and went on to represent Hervey Bay at national titles.

“He feels like he really belongs to the club, and he's just one of many stories.”

Member Vanessa Williams also started young and was so inspired by the sport that she is now giving back by coaching the under 10s.

THE Hervey Bay Swimming Club provides a great opportunity for members to have fun, get active and socialise in a healthy, supportive and safe environment.

COMPLETE with pink shirts and a fundraising pink bucket, members of the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch were out in force in the Anzac Bar recently to raise funds for the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Stumps Test Cricket Day. With the help of some generous patrons, the crew did an amazing job raising $600 for this worthy cause, supporting individuals and families experiencing breast cancer, which was then matched by the Sub-Branch taking the tally to $1200.

The RSL then matched that amount, taking the grand total to $2400.

Thanks to a $3200 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant, members will continue to be sheltered from the elements after the club bought two new marquees.

The club has always provided swimmers with plenty of shade under marquees at all their swim events but with the expensive shelters now worn and tired, it was time to replace them.
