The club's Melbourne Cup lunch on November 3 was a terrific day and enjoyed by 160 people. Guests were treated to a special visit from Fraser Coast Regional Council Mayor George Seymour, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk and newly elected member for Hervey Bay, Adrian Tantari, who were doing a tour of the region on the day. Annastacia was even kind enough to judge the fashions on field much to the excitement of those who took part.

that it will still go ahead. Usually the club would hosts almost 500 guests, with about 50 per cent of those being patrons that attend every year. When bookings open each year there's 50 members that are automatically placed on the list because that's their tradition. As a service to our loyal members, the committee made the unanimous decision to still host 450 guests this year, with the lifting of further restrictions just announced. It's important to us that those return guests can still enjoy their special RSL Christmas Day lunch. They will all be treated to a staff-assisted buffet (in line with Covid-safe guidelines) with a traditional feast of roast pork, baked New York ham, roast beef, fresh local seafood, salads and a selection of desserts. On a final note I would like to on behalf of the committee wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy start to the new year. If your travelling please keep safe and hope to see you in the club soon.

COMMUNITY GRANTS
MARINE RESCUE WHEN most people hear about Marine Rescue Hervey Bay (MRHB), they imagine a rescue vessel heading out on the water to assist the region's boating community. For just $90 a year, boaties receive onwater assistance twice a year (free up to a certain value) if they break down or get in trouble.
What most don't see, is the volunteers of the not-for-profit organisation working behind the scenes in the radio room 365 days a year, those in administration, those doing the fundraising, and the skippers and crew who are faced with everything from simple activations to life and death scenarios. The volunteer crews were called out over 300 times last year alone. Rescue Skipper Graeme Davies said without all these people the boats are irrelevant. “We like to promote the notion that the boats are just a hole in the water unless you have the people to crew them, people in admin, people raising funds to keep them going and all of the radio team,” he said. The Hervey Bay RSL recognised many years ago that the professional rescue service was invaluable to the Fraser Coast and supports the cause by donating $1500 a month from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program.
Marine Rescue Hervey Bay will always respond to boaties requiring assistance whether they are members or not, but due to the expenses involved, nonmembers pay to help cover the costs of the capability.
A further $3000 was donated last financial year to replace outdated computers which are vital for the service's online training programs or our members.
“Membership gives you two rescues a year, and if you need three rescues in the year then maybe boating shouldn't be your thing,” Graeme said with a laugh.
The funds help cover the costs of maintenance on the boats 'Hyne Timber Rescue', 'Rescue III' and 'Rescue IV' and the cost of fuel, which for activations and training was about $48,000 in 2019.
“By joining MRHB you have RACQ on the water. “You might have the world's best boat and the best kept engine, but anything can happen and we're the fall-back option.” Graeme and John encourage all boaties, whether members or not, to log-on with Marine Rescue Hervey Bay either by radio (VHF Channel 73) or by phone (07 4128 9666) before hitting the water. This radio monitoring is a free service that could save your life.
The expense of maintaining these vessels and crews to the high standard they expect was in excess of $70,000 for 2019. MRHB Commodore John Smith said the community and MRHB would be at a loss without the RSL's support. “Without the RSL pouring fuel into the boat, it's not going anywhere,” John said. “The club's funding is vital to our ongoing operation.” Graeme said a major aspect to successfully funding MRHB is for those boaties in the community to take up an annual membership.
Without the RSL pouring fuel into the boat, it's not going anywhere. For more information about this vital service, follow them on Facebook or visit the website at marinerescueherveybay.org.au.

NO LIMITS
on catering FOR over 14 years, Older Men Unlimited have been making a difference in the lives of Fraser Coast men. The organisation was originally funded by the former Hervey Bay City Council as a community support group for local men at risk of depression, dementia and suicide. The not-for-profit organisation has only grown over the years, with about 150 members who enjoy going along a few times a week to have a chat, enjoy a cuppa, go on bus trips, take art classes, go on walks or enjoy a morning tea each Friday.
Men need to sit down and talk … women get together and have their chats, but you find that men find it a bit harder to do that.
Secretary Chris O'Brien said the organisation was about providing a safe environment where members can enjoy some good old-fashioned Aussie mateship, which is a great way to combat loneliness and social isolation.
In order to cater for the masses, the OMU were in desperate need of some new kitchen and catering equipment, which is where the Hervey Bay RSL stepped in to help.
Prior to Coronavirus, the men also took part in an outreach program where they would visit other men in nursing homes or hospital. “We put on a little morning tea each Friday and the main thing behind it is that the men get to sit down, have a cup of coffee and have a talk with each other,” Chris said.
Knowing the difference the club makes in the lives of local men, the club was only too happy to donate over $4600 worth of equipment through the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program.
“It's very much a comradery type thing.
Chris said now having a new bainmarie with overhead heating systems, two electric hotplates and a large sandwich press has made the world of difference to the way they cater their functions.
As well as hosting their own functions, the organisation is also a big supporter of the Seagulls Rugby League Club. The men are often found behind the barbecue cooking up a storm for each game at the Bideford Street grounds, where the OMU clubhouse is located at the top of the building.
“It has been exceptionally good,” Chris said.
“I help out in the kitchen on Friday morning and do some catering and the best bit of equipment is the bain-marie … it's been fantastic. “When we cater for the Seagulls home games' we take down the two hot plates and wheel the bain-marie down the ramp and cook everything from hamburgers, sausages in bread, bacon and egg rolls and we do hot dogs as well. “We can fill up the bain-marie, and while we are cooking, we can still cater for the people at the window. “It's made such a big difference.”

HERVEY BAY HOSPITAL
Auxiliary Children’s Christmas party SEEING the pure joy on the faces of children at the Hervey Bay Hervey Bay Hospital Auxiliary Children's Christmas party is what keeps Trish Hummerston coming back each year.
For the past four years, the passionate volunteer has been co-ordinating the festive get together for any child up to the age of 15, and their families, who had been admitted to hospital that year. The market-like event is usually held in the hospital grounds behind the maternity ward, with face painters, popcorn, fairy floss, balloon making, and in the past have had special visits from police, ambulance, Paw Patrol characters, lots of food and, of course, a visit from Santa.

“I have so enjoyed doing it for the last four years,” Trish said.
“The RSL has supported me for the past four years, and I'm very thankful,” Trish said.
“I'm just a passionate person, that's just me and I just love what do. I love seeing the look on the kids' faces when they see Santa and get a gift. “We weren't going to have a Christmas party at all this year because of Covid, so thank goodness we can now actually go ahead.” Children up to eight years of age receive a gift and the older kids will receive a voucher for popcorn, drink and a movie screening at the BigScreen

“I would be lost without the RSL's support.”
“I appreciate so much what the club does for me and the kids … they pay for the movie tickets and all the toys and gifts.
Trish has also been known to stand on the number 2 tee at the Hervey Bay Golf Club to help raise funds for the days' entertainment.
“There's a lot of children on the Fraser Coast that don't have much so, to me, to be able to give them a movie ticket … I know they can at least go out for a little bit of recreation and that's
She can also be found selling raffle tickets at local markets. “I raise that money because it doesn't matter what it costs, I just need it to be a happy couple of hours for the kids.”
The RSL also supports the station an ongoing monthly donation of $200 and previous grant of $1000 for side annex for the station's mobile van.
FRASER Coast Community Radio station will now be able to promote their great work online thanks to a $1550 grant from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program.

YOUTH DEFENCE SKILLS
REWARDED MARTIAL arts are part of everyday life for Kyal and Mackenzie Pitchford. The brother and sister duo both train about 10 hours a week after school and on Saturday's, as well as the school holidays, which is a testament to their commitment for the sport.
Kyal placed third for points and third in kata, which now sits him on the ladder as third best in Queensland.
Fifteen-year-old Kyal and 12-year-old Mackenzie both started training at six years old, and have progressed through the ranks with sheer determination to do well during that time.
“We like the discipline and the opportunity to complete on a state and national level.”
A trip to the Queensland State Championships on the Gold Coast proved that recently, with Mackenzie taking out first place for freestyle and points sparring and third in kata.
which mum Jade is thankful for. “They have both put in so much time over the last two years and they have given up much of their free time and school holidays to train,” Jade said.
They both agree that they love the sport because it has so much to offer.
The two are now training hard for the National Titles in Sydney next year and, for the second year, will be given a helping hand from a Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant to get there.
“In conjunction with the RSL sponsorship to help meet the cost of travelling to multiple events over the course of the two years, they have both achieved fantastic results.
Both Kyal and Mackenzie received a $1000 each to assist with entry fees, equipment, accommodation and travel,
“Both Kyal and Mackenzie would like to thank the RSL for their ongoing support.”
CRAFT
from the heart
A QUILT is such a simple item to many but for the families of fallen or permanently injured defence force personal, police, fire brigade and paramedics, they mean so much more. Despite all this, the volunteer still covers the rest of the costs to ensure the project continues.
“Everyone needs a purpose,” Denise said. “The reason I make these quilts is not for my benefit, but so the grieving families know that a complete stranger appreciates the loss of their loved one in the pursuit of their duty, and their sacrifice does not go unnoticed by others.
In the past 12 years, over 600 Hero Quilts have been lovingly crafted by Hervey Bay's Denise Smith who sends them on to her heroes who serve in harm's way and defend our lives and freedoms.
She often has 12 quilts, made of uplifting colours and various patterns, ready to be shipped out. The family quilts are sent to service personal through a local Legacy group, and the quilts for injured soldiers are sent via the padre at the Gallipoli barracks in Brisbane.
“The quilts are a big thank you to people who have had to lose their family member for either my well-being or the well-being of others, and that's what it's all about. “That's why I do it. I know what it's like to lose somebody.”
As a mother of seven children, Denise said family is at the heart of her life and she feels deeply for others who have lost loved ones in the line of duty.
The Hervey Bay RSL believes whole heartedly in the compassionate project and has been supporting Denise with a Community Grant of $500 for the past nine years and $1000 for the last two years, which helps cover the cost of materials.
The quilts serve as both a token of her thanks and a memorable keepsake for families in mourning.
As a pensioner, mother of five rescue animals and carer for her husband with Alzheimer's, spare cash is hard to find.
11
Staff at the Hervey Bay Police Station kindly forward on her quilts to the station where the fallen officer was working. Denise very rarely has any contact with the recipients, but she knows in her heart that they will be cherished. “It's just my gift to them.” Find out more about the project on Facebook at Hero Quilts: Quilting for a Cause.

STAFF PROFILE
Elaine Johnson THE Hervey Bay RSL had just gone to two levels, the tables were clothed for dinner on a Friday and Saturday night, and member's children would relish in the annual Christmas party with presents, lollies and ice-cream in Hervey House. That was 24 years ago when Elaine Johnson first started work at the club.
kids' Christmas party downstairs in Hervey House.
Having lived in Hervey Bay all her life, Elaine is also a familiar face to longtime locals who would have met her while working at the old Blue Pennant Bakery on Main St, O'Rileys Pizza Parlour on the Esplanade, the Ten Pin Bowling centre and many other restaurants.
‘I've seen a lot of changed over the years', but the biggest difference is the amount of staff and patrons the club has today.
Now, Elaine is one of the longest serving staff members at the Hervey Bay RSL, having started as a food and beverage attendant, worked her way up to catering supervisor and for the last 15 years has been the club's muchloved and respected Functions Coordinator. “I started on February 5, 1996 … so that's a long time,” Elaine said with a smile. “I was here when all the pokies arrived for the first time upstairs and I did the

Making sure every detail, even down to the position of the tablecloths, is important to Elaine.
“There were only about 10 staff in catering when I started. The RSL Women's Auxiliary would even come along and help serve meals on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day.”
“It's all the little things that count and it's all the preparation beforehand that also makes a difference.
From washing dishes when she first started to now organising functions for hundreds of people, Elaine has always loved her job and taken great pride in her work.
“That's the key to setting up a great function. If you're not prepped and there's a hiccup, then that's when you get behind.
She has planned and coordinated hundreds of events and created lifelong memories for thousands of clients who have held their wedding receptions in Hervey House, as well for guests who have attended Melbourne Cup functions, birthdays, Anzac Day and Sub-Branch Events, and Christmas parties.
“I love to be involved in doing the functions from start to finish, from when the initial enquiry is taken to when the function is finished. “I love meeting people and working with them to the very end, so I know they've had a good time and they are always appreciative of what you
“It's very rewarding.” Elaine has also passed on her wealth of knowledge to many school-based trainees over the years, with some going on to find full-time positions at the club. “I've always had some great staff to work with and many have been schoolbased trainees. “The ones that have been interested enough and want to learn have now been employed here permanently. “I have loved the opportunity to be able to train and then see them go on to making a career out of it in their adult life.” Well done, Elaine!

THE CLUBHOUSE
celebrates DRESSED in their Melbourne Cup best, a crowd of 150 guests enjoyed all the fun and frivolity of the annual event at The Clubhouse Hervey Bay. Venue Manager Iona NicolCronin said the function was always popular, with tickets selling out almost right away. Guests enjoyed an alternate drop two-course meal, including a delectable chocolate brownie and crème brulee for dessert.
leave because they were enjoying themselves so much. “It was a really great day and we look forward to doing it all again next year.”
“It's a function that regulars always seem to come back and enjoy,” Iona said. “There's always a great atmosphere and the food is always great.” Local musician Doug Edwards kept the punters entertained with live music, and the raffles, sweeps, and fashions on the field competition were also a big hit. “People just didn't want to

WHEN you stay in one job for 17 years, there must be something special that keeps the employee coming back. For Chrissy Teasdale, it's the great work mates she has had the opportunity to work alongside, the customers she has met and the personalised service you can find at The Clubhouse Hervey Bay. Chrissy has seen many changes at the much-loved venue after first walking through the doors of the then Hervey Bay Golf Club in 2004. The Hervey Bay RSL officially took over the Clubhouse in November 2014 and went straight to work on a refurbishment of the bar and servery area, added a dedicated children's room, expanded the car park and moved the gaming room away from the dining area. “I was with the golf club for 10 years and have now been at the Clubhouse for five years,” Chrissy said. “ I've worked with a lot of wonderful people over the years.
AT HERVEY BAY The Hervey Bay Golf Club has a very diverse membership.
Chriy Teasdale - Bar & Gam “It's the ing Attendant only job I've had. I just really enjoy it.”
From being a bar attendant to ordering stock, Chrissy has tried her hand at most roles over the years. “I always make sure the duty managers have all the stock they need at functions and just make sure everything goes smoothly so they don't have to worry. “I still do the bar side of things too.” Chrissy has also formed some great relationships with long-time customers, which she attributes to working in a smaller, more personalised environment. “You get to know the regulars, what they drink and what they like and that gives the experience a much more personal touch. I really love that.“
Among these members is the Veteran Golfers. The Veteran golfers form, almost, the largest group within the club. At present we number 277 split between men and ladies. To become a member you must be over 55 yrs for men and 50yrs for ladies. We play every Monday (public holidays excepted) and each week we play a variety of different games. We have 3 inter club challenge matches against Gympie, Maryborough and Tin Can Bay. Each club is played twice home and away. We are affiliated to the Wide Bay District Veteran Golfers and also the Queensland Veteran Golf Union (QVGU). Through these two affiliations we are involved in Open Days, Carnivals, State and District championships as well as the National Veteran Golfers Championship.
The Wide Bay Spring Carnival is played over two weeks in September and involves five of our local clubs including Hervey Bay. This event attracts approx 260 competitors from all over Australia the Hervey Bay Veterans will be hosting the Queensland State Carnival in November played over 2 days. Some of our fundraising is done by participating in the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle and this allows us to support Junior Golf by way of donations and also pays for subsidised lunches on specific occasions and our huge Christmas dinner and presentation night to close our season. Veterans golf is a great way to enjoy golf (regardless of skill level) with your peer group.

FRASER COAST MATES
ANNUAL GOLF DAY GOLFING MATES finally got the opportunity to get together for a fun day to support mental health. The 2020 Fraser Coast Mates Golf Day finally arrived, after being delayed from the normal June date, with reduced COVID restrictions allowing the day in much warmer conditions in its
4th year on Friday 6th November. The Fraser Coast community united in their support for mental health awareness with a record turnout of 160 players. While the
warmer weather did add more pressure for the drinks carts, the atmosphere was strong in pink and filled with many emotions. Wide Bay Health won the Geoff Redpath Memorial Trophy as they turned up in many to support the day and provide some tools to many in understanding the issues in our community. The harsh reality is more people will lose their lives to suicide this year compared to COVID-19.
The Fraser Coast business community have shown in numbers they will not sit back in silence in addressing this illness and everyone involved in the day needs to be congratulated. Over $10,000 was raised on the day to help Fraser Coast Mates support communication to encourage people to be brave and speak up.
