The club has just held its yearly AGM and there is no doubt that 2023 has seen the Hervey Bay RSL Group have an outstanding and successful financial year. I would like to congratulate staff, management and our committee for a tremendous year. Thank you also to members and guests for their ongoing support of our venues.

Part of this process this year saw several members contest available Committee Positions.

Congratulations to Memorial Club committee members Bob Ney, Terry Clayton and Robert Garland on their re-election at the 2023 Annual General Meeting.

I thank you for your commitment, time, and passion to uphold the vision, mission and ideals of our club. Finally, thank you to all our members who took the time to come into the club to vote.

There are some exciting times ahead and I feel privileged to once again be elected in the Clubs' President's position.

We look forward to seeing the RSL Club alterations come to fruition in 2024, which will include an increase in kitchen space, major upgrades to Frasers Bar and renovated toilets on level 1.

An extension to the deck area will also provide additional seating for another 100 patrons which will prove popular on our Thursday night President's draws which has been booking out at least a week in advance.

The renovations at The Clubhouse Hervey Bay are now almost complete with a new façade, remodelled reception area, sports bar, keno lounge, extension to the gaming room and new kitchen. The last item we are waiting on is the carpet for the restaurant, sports and gaming areas.

The new functions room and adjoining alfresco deck area looks fantastic and is sure to be a hit with locals wanting to host special occasions. A kitchen and bar were incorporated into the renovations which will bring a smooth and timely delivery of meals and drinks.

RSL members can swipe their membership card at the Clubhouse to receive discount on meals and drinks, so we would love members to go along and check out the new-look club!

The opening of Mini Golf Hervey Bay has surpassed all our expectations with many locals and visitors enjoying the new 18-hole course and cafe.

Continually high numbers of guests shows that this is a very successful investment and an attraction that was very much needed in Hervey Bay.

After a brief period being closed for a revamp, Sea Bar 469 has a new menu and is now open seven days a week for breakfast and lunch. It has been terrific to hear positive feedback from guests since reopening.

Our highly anticipated Melbourne Cup functions were a great success with a sold-out crowds enjoying all the fashions, fun and frivolity that the colourful cup day is known for.

It was also wonderful to see a huge crowd of people turn out for the Remembrance Day service at the Freedom Park cenotaph on November 11.

All our venues are now gearing up for the Christmas period with the RSL already sold out for our popular Christmas buffet lunch.

There are no public holiday surcharges at the RSL and Clubhouse during the holiday period so be sure to make a booking online or by phoning the club.

I would like to wish our members, guests and staff a safe and merry Christmas, and I look forward to seeing you all at the Club in 2024!

HERVEY House has been a hub for entertainment recently with a little bit of every genre to suit members and guests’ musical tastes… and there’s lots more to come.

Check out our entertainment pages for details on upcoming shows over the Christmas holidays including Soul City for NYE, Pink Vs Gaga Show, Akmal and Jimeoin, just to name a few.

Guests took a step back in time to the 50s recently when the Rock 'n' Roll Boys came to town.

Their energetic performances with catchy melodies had everyone ready to shake, rattle and roll on the dance floor.

A big thank you to the dancers from Flame Studios Hervey Bay who also entertained the crowd with their awesome moves.

Elton John fans just loved the amazing voice of Greg Andrew at the recent tribute show. You couldn't help but sing along to all the superb classics like Candle in the Wind, I'm Still Standing and many more!

Rumour has it that these guys and girls are one of the best Fleetwood Mac Tribute bands in town!

The band has played sell-out shows across Australia, including the Hervey Bay RSL. These talented musicians immerse themselves in the 70s and 80s era to produce this sensational show.

If there’s one day of the year to use as an excuse for putting on your best frock or suit, fascinator and a bit of lippy, it has to be the Melbourne Cup! Guests who attended the sold-out cup function in Hervey House did just that! The room was filled with all the glitz and glamour of the day with lots of laughs and race day fun.

RSL CAROLS SET TO ROCK A MAJOR shakeup to the production of this year’s Hervey Bay RSL Carols by Candlelight is sure to make it one of the best in its 25-year history.

Luke Strochnetter from 360 Degrees Marketing and the Hervey Bay Christian Ministers Association will present the iconic event at Seafront Oval on Saturday, December 9 as a gift to the community in the spirit of the giving season.

The Hervey Bay RSL has helped give the gift of giving for over 10 years and this year allocated major sponsorship of $13,000 and in-kind support to help stage the event including staff hours to manage financials, tea, coffee, printing the song booklets, sandwiches for volunteers during set-up and funds towards hiring security.

“It's a very important event for the community. We are very thankful to the RSL and everyone who has come on board as sponsors this year.”

With an 8000-strong crowd expected to attend, Luke said it was imperative the carols were done right with a priority on health and safety, bigger LED screens placed on both sides of the stage, the

use of a state-of-the-art sound system and lots of stage lighting.

“We've got a bigger scale production this year with a higher standard and it's going to be so much fun,” Luke said.

“The main part of why the budget has gone up is because we want everyone to see, hear and enjoy the carols,” Luke said.

“No matter where you are sitting on the oval you will have the same experience.”

This year's entertainment will also look a little bit different with less talking and more singing with young local performer William Ramage, Soul Sisters, students from Miss Rowe's Music School and vocalists from the Combined Churches all taking to the stage.

There will, of course, also be a visit from Santa.

“This year we are making the performances a little bit different with traditional songs but also a good mix of favourites that people love to sing along to.”

NEW LOOK FOR ALL-ABILITIES FUTSAL IT WAS a fantastic year for the Hervey Bay Humpbacks All-Abilities Futsal Team who finished the season on a high with a special presentation at the Hervey Bay RSL. It was a dream of founder Jimmy Hamilton to start a sport in Hervey Bay where people with all abilities could play a team sport and make new friends in a safe space.

He started one team in Hervey Bay and it grew in popularity so quickly that a second team was formed.

However, this club is not just about kicking a ball.

“The Humpbacks are a team and community group for people with disabilities, run by people with disabilities,” Jimmy said.

“As a team we have helped fundraise for members of the community and our players also volunteer working on Whalesong Cruises.

“These activities have all been a result of a Futsal team deciding to be a friendship group.”

When the Humpbacks return to the field next season they will be looking extra suave after receiving a $1500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant for new uniforms.

“No matter what type of year you have had or what type of family you have or what's going on in your financial situation, you can forget about all that, have joy and just be in a happy place for the night.

“It's kind of like a light at the end of the tunnel every year and no matter how old or young you are or how much money you have, you can come along and have a fun night out.

“It's about coming together as a community and having fun in a safe environment.”

There will be lots of food vendors available or bring along your own picnic to enjoy.

Candle glow sticks will be available to purchase on the night with all funds going back to the Ministers Association Chaplaincy Program.

Gates will open at 4.30pm with the main carols program set to start at 6pm, followed by the Prime Agents Fireworks Finale at 8pm.

CASTING FOR NEW MEMBERS FISHING clubs have been a staple of recreational pleasure for many years, as they provide an opportunity to have fun and form friendships with like-minded individuals.

That's certainly the case for the handful of fun-loving members from the Fraser Coast Memorial Fishing Club.

Fishing gurus Ivan and Frank said the club formed two years ago with a goal of attracting members of all abilities, all ages and both male and female members.

It's also a great club for members who would love to cast a line but don't own a boat of their own.

The crew do some incredible fundraising during the year to help subsidize the cost of club shirts and jackets, whale watching trips, an annual seven-day fishing trip and deep-sea charter fishing trips a few times a year, just to name a few.

They can be seen cooking up a sausage sizzle at the Torquay markets on the first and second Saturday of the month and many other local community events like the scooter rally and this year's New Year's Eve celebrations in Torquay.

To assist the club in their fundraising efforts, the Hervey Bay RSL Community

Grants program provided the fishing club with two new marquees valued at over $2000 to erect on their fundraising days.

The previous shade covers had been leaking, had holes in and were no longer structurally sound.

GRANT HITS THE RIGHT NOTE A HERVEY Bay RSL grant of over $2600 has provided a local volunteer singing group with a safer space to perform at aged care homes and local community events.

The Believe It or Not performers are well-known for putting smiles on the faces of aged care residents who get great joy out of tapping their toes and clapping along to their cool tunes.

The BION group is made up of seven mature aged performers ranging from 63 to 80 years old, who volunteer their time to bring joy through entertainment.

However, to continue performing in a safe environment where audience members could also get on stage,

BION needed cable-free sound equipment so there's no exposed leads to trip over.

With the help of the RSL grant and a generous discount from David and Kai at Ultra Music, the group now has a wireless microphone system and a new mixer to run it.

You can catch BION at city events like the Mayor's Picnic, the annual scooter rally and they regularly perform for audiences at the Hervey Bay Bowls Club.

PICKLEBALL CALLS

AN urgent call to clean up the Pickleball courts at the back outside area of the Hervey Bay PCYC has been heard by the Hervey Bay RSL donations committee.

Committee member Robert Garland had been watching the slow progress of the courts with interest from his office and approached the Pickleball Club to see if the RSL may be able to assist.

The club submitted a community grant application to the donations committee and with an approval of $5700, two of the old worn-out courts have since been resurfaced.

“The Hervey Bay RSL is our members community club and we are here to assist where we can,” Robert said.

“I could see that the club was struggling to get where they needed to be and the grant helped get them over the line as far as the refurbishments were concerned.

“It's great to see that members of our community can now safely gain all the health benefits while playing pickleball.”

Pickleball Club President Rob Towan said it's one of the fastest growing not-forprofit clubs in the world with numbers increasing rapidly on the Fraser Coast since the club formed two years ago.

They currently have 70 members with almost 600 people on our Facebook Group. Rob said the state of the courts

SWIM CLUB GETS HITCHED MEMBERS of the Fraser Coast Swim Club no longer need to borrow tray back utes or worry about the floor falling out of their rusty old trailer.

A major sponsorship of over $7000 from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program has made attending swim meets around Queensland much easier with the purchase of an 8x5m custom enclosed cargo trailer with colourful signwriting.

President Kyleigh Metcalfe said the trailer is now a permanent home for the club's four marquees, trolley, weights and dress up costumes used by club members at out-of-town events.

She said the flash new outfit has been a blessing to members and their families.

Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and pingpong using a paddle and plastic ball with holes.

It's a sport for all ages and skill levels.

“We had a really old cage trailer and the floor had rusted out and, in the meantime, we used our work ute but the tub was getting damaged from throwing everything in all the time,” Kyleigh said.

“So, whoever is taking the trailer now, can just pull it out from the shed, hook it on and off they go.

“It has just made life so much easier.

We can't thank the RSL enough for their support.”

Kyleigh said being able to transport the marquees without fail also means the club can always provide essential protection from the sun.

“With temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees in some parts of Queensland, providing shade is crucial to the wellbeing and comfort of our participants and their families.

“The trailer will also ensure the longevity of our marquees tents by offering secure storage.

“Previously the tents were stored outside an old clubhouse, exposing them to the weather.

“We can now safeguard all our valuable assets, ultimately reducing replacement costs.”

CALLING ALL RC BOATIES THE Wide Bay Remote Control Power Boat Club was formed two years ago to provide a place for local enthusiasts to get together and enjoy their chosen sport.

Club founder John Anderson even purchased his property in Dundowran for the sole purpose of running these incredibly fast boats on his massive dam which now boasts a specially designed Australian Standard Course.

Since then, the club has grown significantly and so has the need for more equipment to host multiple events during the year including the Queensland Titles and the Southeast Queensland Titles with inter-clubs from the Gold Coast and Brisbane travelling to the region.

It's safe to say the members had a grin ear to ear when they collected a new state-of-the-art P/A system purchased with a generous discount from David Salata at Ultra Music and a $2255 grant from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program.

BIG GOALS FOR STRIKERS IT has been a massive year for the Bayside Strikers Football Club who have proudly celebrated their 25th anniversary.

Established in 1998, they are the longest continuously running football club in Hervey Bay, which is a fantastic achievement.

With the support of a $500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant, Cooper was able to fly to Sydney with the support of his family, attend the compulsory excursion to Darling Harbour and represent Star of the Sea

Catholic School, and Queensland, in the sport he loves.

Cooper competed in the 11 years 100m butterfly event against 20 other swimmers across Australia.

His heat swim qualified him for the final where he finished in 8th place, shaving .65 seconds off his heat swim time.

Cooper has already started goal setting for next year and hopes to gain selection on the Queensland team again in 2024.

BIG CALL FOR JUNIOR UMPIRE A $1000 INDIVIDUAL RSL sporting grant gave young Lochlan Crack and his family the opportunity to book stressfree accommodation near the fields where he was umpiring AFL at the Queensland Representative School Sports U15’s National Championships recently.

The 17-year-old was one of only a handful of umpires from around Australia selected to officiate at the event in Ballarat, Victoria, where a high calibre of competitors played on multiple fields.

Lochlan said he will now share the invaluable knowledge learnt from the carnival with his local club and junior umpires.

“I was privileged with the opportunity to umpire such a high quality of footy, and work with other experienced student officials.

“I learnt skills to further develop and improve my umpiring ability which is of great benefit to not only to me but our local league in which I umpire.”

A PITCH FOR GRANT AWARDED HERVEY Bay’s Brooke Kington is a familiar face around the local cricket scene with the young all-rounder taking out several championships and awards at the Hervey Bay Cricket Association over the past few years.

Most recently the Year 11 Urangan High student was awarded a $500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant after being selected to represent Queensland in the 19 Years and Under NSW/QLD Cricket Exchange held in Pottsville, NSW, recently.

The teams competed against each other over five days, playing both 50 over and T20 matches.

There were some very close games, but unfortunately no wins for the Queensland girls.

Brooke said she had a great time playing the sport that she loves and making more new friends.

“The grant money received helped my parents with the financial burden of attending and enable us to stay at an Airbnb 10mins away from the grounds in Ballarat.

NEW STAGE PRESENTS Z-PAC Theatre has entered a new age of technology when it comes to communicating during performances thanks to a major sponsorship from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program.

The Zephyr Street performing arts crew were recent recipients of a $6500 grant to purchase five new state-of-the-art duplex talker headsets and belt packs in a small light weight design, with a long 10-hour battery life, encrypted FHSS technology and water-resistant technology.

The RSL is the only club in Hervey Bay that runs a Community Grants Program, which has seen local sporting clubs, individuals and community groups receive a share of over $900,000 in the last financial year. The grants program celebrates and supports individual achievements and those charities and not-for-profit organisations doing incredible work on the Fraser Coast.

The pain, suffering and sacrifice ex-servicemen and woman experienced while defending our country’s freedom will never be forgotten.

That was the clear message on Remembrance Day as members and guests of the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch paused to remember on the 11th day, of the 11th month, at 11am.

A huge crowd surrounded the Freedom Park Cenotaph in Pialba for the moving service.

Sub-Branch members then came to the RSL for lunch and a catch up with mates.

Venue manager Sue Smith said it's exciting to see a look of amazement on patrons faces as they check out the new look club, inside and out.

Sue said the main feature of the new façade being the one-of-a-kind flagpole, surrounded by a synthetic green has been a popular addition to the entrance of the club.

“Especially as the flagpole lights up the night sky with LED strip lights,” Sue said.

“It looks absolutely amazing and is the only one of its kind in Hervey Bay. “There's a vibrant atmosphere now before you even walk into the club.”

The remodelled reception area boasts all new tiles and stylish contemporary carpet will be laid throughout the venue over the coming months.

Sue said the main features guests are loving so far is the extension of the HoleIn-One Gaming room and the new dedicated Sports Bar with high tables, big

screen TVs and a KENO lounge area.

“Those that would like a quiet spot to play KENO can just come in this space and sit down and relax. It's a great new addition.”
