That's where Yoorana Women's Domestic Violence and Resource Service comes in.
They are committed to ensuring women and children live a safe, healthy, and happy life free from Domestic Violence.
The service is a refuge, with three sites located in Maryborough and Hervey Bay, providing safe accommodation to women and children escaping violent situations.
Sadly, Yoorana services up to 128 women and children locally each year out of domestic and family violence. Manager Tanya Sanders said Yoorana is
THE Hervey Bay RSL has dug deep to support local women in crisis.
Myriam Cottage is a three-bedroom home in Scarness that was purchased by Marie Gibbon in 2016 to fulfill her late mother's dream of buying a house and opening the doors to accommodate the less fortunate.
guided by the feministbased principles of autonomy, choice and empowerment and are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment to create change and improve the safety of women and children.
“We provide temporary accommodation, therapeutic support, counselling, and advocacy,” Tanya said.
“We provide good quality accommodation with capacity for client privacy and wherever possible a homelike atmosphere.”
The Hervey Bay RSL has played in important part in helping to provide that atmosphere recently with a $4667 grant to buy two trampolines, two
swing sets and two TVs and brackets for the Hervey Bay refuge.
Tanya said the new additions to the homes have helped the women and children's wellbeing and healing during their time of crisis.
“The grant money has been utilised to positively impact the women and children of Yoorana who are navigating through the chaos that is Domestic and Family Violence,” she said.
“Generous support from donors like the
RSL provide the financial, material and moral support needed to continue our work.
“The children will benefit from outdoor play and additionally having a television equipped with Smart features which will allow our families to feel at home whilst they navigate through such a traumatic and turbulent time. “We would not have been able to do this without the RSL's support.”
THERE’S no rest for the wicket as far as young Caelan Barr is concerned.
The talented Hervey Bay cricket player was selected to play in the U14s Wide Bay Cricket Team, that competed at the Queensland Junior Cricket Southern Championships on the Gold Coast recently.
A $250 Hervey Bay RSL grant helped to cover some of the entry costs to the prestigious competition where Caelan's performance was outstanding.
Marie used the proceeds from her mum Myriam's estate to ensure her wishes were honoured.
The aptly named cottage has since been home to 77 women who have found safety in the short, medium and long-term accommodation.
The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program has assisted the notfor-profit organisation in the past with buying a new washing machine, removal of a tree, security screens for the doors and an office printer.
The cottage received further assistance recently with a $3380 grant to replace tired and worn window shutters.
“Thanks to the RSL grant we now have three rooms sheltered from the afternoon sun since the installation of the shutters,” Marie said.
“The ladies in our care are so happy and very grateful.”
Marie said most of the residents are referred to the cottage from Mental Health Unit Outpatients, Head Space, Domestic Violence, Social Workers, Case managers, and community members, with the women all homeless for reasons beyond their control.
The cottage is run by volunteers who help guests gain valuable life skills through cooking and cleaning classes, therapy, budgeting, self-esteem building exercises, and supporting them to find employment.

Not only did the Under 14 Colts Captain take 7 for 17 for the Wide Bay side, at the end of the carnival he was also selected to play in the QJC President's XI merit team.
Caelan's proud mum Melissa said he contributed with both bat and ball in all five games.
“He finished the week with a top score of 58 against Sunshine Coast and best bowling figures of 7/17 against Darling Downs and Southwest Queensland Cricket Inc (DDSWQ).
“Caelan was playing against the best players in his age group from Southern Queensland and we're very proud of his achievements.
“Thank you to the RSL for your support.”
IT is a basic human right to live in a safe and healthy environment free of domestic violence.
THEY flip, jump, stunt and tumble and now Braydoch Scott and Denman Hampton will fly their way to The Global Dance and Cheerleading Games in Hawaii this May.
The two Hervey Bay athletes have been selected to compete at the invitationonly four-day event where only a few cheerleaders from around the country were chosen to represent Australia. They will compete against the best of the best in every country, nation, level, and style!
A $1500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant awarded to both athletes will help pay for their flights, accommodation, competition entry fees and event insurance.
The two formed a dynamic duo in 2019 when they started training together at Asgard All Stars.
The powerhouse performance they have been producing ever since has led them to the world stage.
Braydoch, 16, is the base (the muscle at the bottom) and Denman, 15, is the flyer (the stunt man).
When their local studio closed the boys dedication to their sport made the decision to travel and train twice a week on the Sunshine Coast inevitable.
The boys mothers Monique and Kelly say their commitment to their sport has given them the skills to progress to an international level.
“Denman has worked very hard balancing both school and training,
coming home from training at midnight and then getting up for school the next day,” Monique said. While balancing school and training Braydoch has also been working parttime to save enough money to attend the competition.
“This is a unique sport and requires hours of dedication and training. They have both put years into becoming incredibly versatile, strong athletes and this is shown by their acceptance into Australia's International Level 4 squad,” Kelly said.
The RSL grant has got both boys dream to compete in Hawaii across the line.
AN outrageously fun triathlon catering for all levels of fitness will be held this year to help raise funds for the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre’s Youth Mentoring Program.
While the RSL Community Grants Committee won't be dusting off their joggers or donning their swimsuits, they are proud to support the April 23 event with a $2500 community grant.
After a four-year hiatus the Col Pearce Corporate Triathlon will be held in spectacular fashion with costumes, fun and frivolity assured.
The Tri was originally started in 2011 in honour of Hervey Bay Tri-Club Patron and community stalwart Col Pearce who sadly passed away from cancer.
The event raised over $45,000 for cancer research and funds for various other charities during that time.
Hervey Bay Tri-Club President Paul Smith thanked the Hervey Bay RSL for their generous support and said the club looks forward to working jointly with the HBNC to support the region's youth.
“Having benefited various charities in the six years the event ran previously, helping the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre take on this event to fund critical Youth Mentoring initiatives is something the club is energised about,” Paul said.
Youth Mentoring has been delivering support to young people experiencing difficulties at school for over 15 years.
The program provides one-on-one mentoring for young
people aged 7 -17 years in partnership with local schools to support them once a week and targets students experiencing difficulties at school to provide extra support and prevent youth disengagement with school and community.
Many of the students with the Youth Mentoring program are referred due to issues they are experiencing at home, mental health, and behavioural issues.
If you or your business would like to support this very worthy cause, then head down to the Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club on the Esplanade to take part in a 300m swim, 10km ride and a 3km run.
Nominate yourself or dob in a team of three. Costumes add to the fun but they're optional and purely your choice.
Every team stands a chance to win, with the champion team finishing closest to their nominated time.
“This grant has gone an extremely long way in relieving some financial stress that this international competition places on us as parents,” Kelly said. “Receiving this grant has given Braydoch and Denman an opportunity that few people have.”
While only one team can walk away as the overall Grand Champions, there will also be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes at every level.
We can't wait to see these boys achieve their goals and wish both the boys and their team the best of luck!
GET set to be a marvellous Mexican, fancy French girl, an awesome Arabian or choose from many more international-themed costumes for the Fraser Coast Fundraising Groups
Biggest Morning Tea.
The highly anticipated event will once again be held in Hervey House on May 9 to raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland.
It is the FCFG's biggest fundraiser of the year and of course, the most fun! Twelve months of planning has gone
into the event with hand-made table decorations made by the group's volunteers, arts and crafts sold in the RSL foyer weeks in advance and lots of raffle prizes donated, collected and wrapped before the day.
A Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant of $2500 will cover the cost of food and room hire for the day.
The group fundraise under the umbrella of Cancer Council Queensland with all money raised going directly to providing assistance towards the services and support that CCQ offers, as well as an investment into vital research and education programs to increase the awareness of cancer and its wide-reaching effects.
Tickets are only $25 and are available from RSL reception Registrations open from 7am. Racing starts at 9am. Visit www.herveybaytriclub.org.au/charitytriathlon to find out more.
However, the insurance company covering their liability had different ideas.
Margaret, the club's social secretary, said the HBAFC has always been inclusive to members of all ages and abilities with club days and their popular annual Junior Whiting Competition, which is a public event that teaches children the basics of fishing with a little prize pack at the end.
They host lots of sausage sizzles and fundraising activities
with funds going back to local charities
Insurance premiums to cover these activities rose significantly last year and meant that events in 2023 would be unaffordable. But with the assistance of a $1200 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant to pay for this cost, the club can now get back to concentrating on working together to run a club that benefits members and gives back to the community, Margaret said. There are some great ideas on the horizon.
“We want to encourage members to think outside the square and back new ideas with the security

A Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant of $1500 plus $500 in fuel vouchers helped pay for accommodation, entry fees and fuel costs.
of insurance behind us to work more with the community, especially youth, elderly and the disabled,” Margaret said.
“We have successfully run the Junior Whiting competition for two years in a row and now we want to do more.”
The club has trialled using a wheelchair to take elderly folk and the disabled to the beach to wet their feet or cast a line which was “absolutely brilliant”, Margaret said.
“Once again, our insurance stopped us from seeing it through at the time.
“We can now get this activity off the ground, make our Junior
Whiting Comp bigger and better for the children of Hervey Bay and be able to offer extensions from the competition for keen youngsters to learn more.
“Thank you the RSL Grants Committee for all you do in the community. It certainly doesn't go unnoticed.”

The 10-year-old autistic boy left school at the age of seven due to severe anxiety and disruptive behaviours.
Not long after Tobias started attending Bayside Martial Arts and his development just blossomed, said mum, Simone.
“Karate has been an amazing support for Tobias helping him develop confidence, discipline and respect,” Simone said.
“Without a doubt I am sure that his calmness, decrease in anxiety and ability to interact in a respectful way is due to what he has learnt and achieved through the dojo.”
Tobias now trains several times a
“Without this grant Tobias would not have been able to attend the championships,” Simone said.
“It is such a huge achievement for him to have been selected and shows how committed he is to the sport and how far he has come since starting his training.
“Receiving this grant and allowing Tobias to enter the championship will help to continue his personal development.”
Tobias achieved some amazing results after placing silver with his team doing a synchronized Kata and a bronze medal for his individual Kata.
“I am amazingly proud of the resilience he showed.”
Hervey Bay's Lucas Mills is one step closer to fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional futsal player after returning triumphant from representing Australia in Hawaii last month.
The 11-year-old was chosen for the team based on his standout performance at the National Club Futsal Championships held in Brisbane last year
After 12 days of playing 808 Futsal against other Under 11 American teams, Lucas and his team were crowned champions of the tournament.
Mum Rebecca said the win was an extraordinary effort with a lot of uncertainty going into the competition.
“The team members and coach didn't know each other prior to the tour and trained together over in Hawaii, around the tournament,” she said.
“Lucas scored four goals over the tournament and he is only 11!
“He has a dream to become a professional football player and continues to train hard daily”
That dream could be realised one day soon with Lucas catching the eye of London-based coaches at the Regional and National Westham Football camps in Australia last year
“His hard work is paying off and he has recently been selected to go to the Westham UK Development Tour in September 2023.
“He is very excited!”
The Hervey Bay RSL was proud to support Lucas' dream of playing for Australia with a $1500 Community Grant to help cover costs associated with the big trip.
THE Hervey Bay Amateur Fishing Club have always thought outside the water when it comes to integrating the local community into their club activities.
Cyclists need an extraordinary amount of time for warmup prior to races with all events held on the open roads.
Sandy Ford from Fraser Coast Cycling incorporated said senior cyclists can pedal up to 50km before hitting the start line. Junior riders don't even contemplate open road warmups due to the danger of traffic on the roads.
So, you can imagine the club's delight when they received the good news that they had been successful in obtaining a $3000 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant to buy four sets of stationary rollers.
Sandy said the rollers allow club members to better prepare for events and eliminate injuries.
“Currently their warmup is very hit and miss but with these rollers it will enable all members to actually better prepare
for events,” Sandy said.
“Our club can't thank the RSL enough for this kind support of our club. The rollers are an invaluable part of training for our members.”
Junior cyclist Oscar Schoff said the sponsorship has made an incredible difference to the way he now prepares for competitions.
Affectionately known as the club's 'pocket rocket', Oscar made good use of the rollers while training for the Queensland Juniors and Masters Championships held in Brisbane.
All that training paid off with Oscar taking home a Gold in the Individual Pursuit, Gold in the Points Race, Silver in Time trial, 4th in
Keirin and 4th in the scratch race. This brilliant effort saw oscar selected in the Queensland under 15 team for the Australian Championships being held in April 2023.
“The rollers provide important training routine that cannot be replicated on the road,”
Oscar said.
“They also help in gaining better bike control when racing, particularly important when sprinting at the end of a race or when racing in a velodrome.
“They are also great to use for training when the weather is not so good to be out on the road… thankfully that doesn't happen too often in Hervey Bay!
“I am so thankful to be able to use this equipment, and for the sponsorship that the RSL has given for our club to purchase these.”
HUNDREDS of entrants made a splash at the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre over the Australia Day weekend.
The Hervey Bay Swimming Club hosted their highly anticipated annual Long Course Swim meet, and it was a great success!
Overall, there was 39 gold medals, 43 silver medals and 30 bronze medals awarded. There was also 53 personal bests and 21 pool records!
A Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant of $4000 helped to cover the costs of the event which attracted 217 swimmers and
A $500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant has helped one young Hervey Bay athletics star compete at the Australian All Schools Track and Field championships in Adelaide recently.
Ryan Cunningham is a member of the Hervey Bay Little Athletics Club and has been training hard to reach his goal of competing in the Queensland track and Field Championships in March 2023.
He also hopes to qualify in the 800m at the Australian Junior track and Field Championships in April 2023.
Placing 7th in the 800m at the championships has now put Ryan in a great position to achieve this goal.
24 clubs from around the Wide Bay region
Not having to pay these fees out of the club's coffers means entry fees are made more affordable for entrants and their families for this competition and at weekly club nights during the year. Congratulations to everyone involved!
The grant assisted Ryan's family with the cost of flights and accommodation to the championships.
“Ryan really enjoyed competing at these championships and is very motivated with his training,” said mum, Lynley.
“Thank you for the sponsorship to help get Ryan to these championships, we really appreciated it.”
There is always a hive of activity going on at the Hervey Bay RSL with patrons enjoying everything from bingo and functions to cold drinks, great food and a flutter in the TAB or gaming room.
What many don't know is that while they are having a good time out, they are also helping to give back to the Fraser Coast community. The RSL is the only club in Hervey Bay that runs a Community Grants Program, which has seen local sporting clubs, individuals and community groups receive a share of over $900,000 in the last financial year. The grants program celebrates and supports individual achievements and those charities and not-for-profit organisations doing incredible work on the Fraser Coast.
Application forms are available online at herveybayrsl.com.au or by phoning Kerrie Alexander on 41977466.
The Hervey Bay RSL is proud to be a Dunga Derby Rally Partner and once again a Gold Sponsor of local charity Rally for a Cause in 2023.
The RSL has been a major supporter of this vital charity for many years in many ways, including having RSL Cars #888 and #40 go off the beaten track for the Dunga Derby.
We look forward to another adventurous run on the Dunga from Thursday, August 3 to Sunday, August 6.

When a family or individual's life is thrown into utter turmoil because of life-limiting medical conditions, sickness, sudden death, or disability, carrying on with everyday life can become difficult.
Imagine being told that the light of your life has a lifethreatening condition that is so rare that there's only 800 cases in the world!
That was unfortunately the case for four-year-old Archer and his family.
The local boy was diagnosed with Haddad's Syndrome which has two very scary components.
It is a combination of a Respiratory condition called
CCHS which affects all areas of the brains autonomic function (breathing, body temperature and heart rate) and Hirschsprung Disease, which is a bowel disease.
Archer only has a 1/3 of his bowel remaining.
Mum Summer said Archer's brain forgets to tell his body to breathe and needs to be attached to a portable ventilator machine every time he falls asleep or is sick. Without it, Archer wouldn't survive an hour.
“Archer's body can't detect C02 from slow or low breathing”, Summer said.
“We have to make sure he's getting adequate volumes of air from his ventilator, or he

HONOUR IN THE early hours of April 25, Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman will don his uniform and proudly pin five medals to the left of his chest.
A symbol of his service to the country during the Vietnam War. The retired Gunner will then head to the poignant Anzac Day Dawn March and Service at sunrise – the time of the original landing in Gallipoli.
“The Dawn Service is the ex-services parade,” Mr Tidyman said. “It's the one where we remember our mates.
something we all unfortunately have in common.”
Brian was in a small unit with “120 blokes” and unfortunately over half of them have now passed away.
“I have some very close mates from Vietnam that are still with us.
“We don't get to see each other all that much because of distance but when we do get together, we remember the good times and remember the mates who have gone before us.
“This year will be 54 years since we left Australia to go to Vietnam.”

The veterans will step-off from the RSL for the Dawn Service march at about 5.15am, followed by the Main March at about 10am with veterans, current serving members, service groups, schools and dignitaries. The veterans and current serving members will then return to the RSL for a private Gunfire breakfast, where they will be sure to raise a glass or two to their fallen mates, tell tales and exchange yarns. The RSL will then open to the public from 1pm, with the café open at this time. Two-up will be held in Hervey House from 1pm.
DAWN SERVICE: The Dawn Service march will leave the RSL Club at about 0515 hours and the service will start when the march has entered Freedom Park at about 0530 hours
MAIN SERVICE: The Main March will step-off from the RSL carpark at about 1000 (10am) hours and move to Freedom Park. The service will commence at 1030 hours. There will be a RAAF flyover at a time yet to be decided.
For the past three years the Hervey Bay RSL Sub-Branch have been campaigning to get an amphitheatre-style seating in Freedom Park.
That wish has now become reality with works currently underway on a three-tier sandstone-lined terrace that will improve the comfort of veterans and others attending memorial services.
The Hervey Bay RSL Sub-branch gained an $88,000 grant from the Gambling Community Benefits Fund to help fund the project which is being undertaken by Council's Open Space and Environment team. Sub-Branch President Brian Tidyman said the three terraces will be dug into the natural slope on the western side of the park.
He said the terrace seating will provide an element of both comfort and safety.
“At present people attending events at the park, especially our mature veterans, find it difficult to stand or use chairs because of the slope,” he said.
“It was also dangerous and slippery to walk on with morning dew at memorials like the Dawn Service.”
Each terrace will have room for guests to use their own seating or sit directly on the sandstone. Stairs, with support handrails, will be installed through the centre of the terracing to facilitate access. The project is expected to be completed and the site re-established before ANZAC Day commemorations.
