Whales migrate North from April to November Each year between April and November, Australia’s eastern coastline is a scene of spectacular acrobatic displays of humpback whales. After a summer of feeding on krill in Southern Antarctic waters, these charismatic animals migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth.

The majority of humpbacks in Australian waters migrate north from June to August, and back towards the Southern Ocean from September to November during their annual migration of up to 10 000 kilometres.

The exact timing of the migration period can vary from year to year depending on water temperature, sea ice, predation risk, prey abundance and the location of their feeding ground.

At a maximum length of 16 metres, the humpback is not the largest whale found in Australian waters.

This species was once only valued dead — mainly for its oil and baleen, or ‘whalebone’.

Beginning in Australia shortly after European colonisation, whaling and the export of whale products became Australia’s first primary industry. Early Australian whalers once hunted from small boats, towing their catch back for processing at shore stations which one was believed to be at Urangan on the shore at Dayman Park.

The development of harpoon guns, explosive harpoons and steam-driven boats commercial whaling so efficient many whale species came very close to extinction. When southern right whales and blue whales became scarce, Australian whalers began to target humpback whales, until the International Whaling Commission banned humpback whaling in the Southern Hemisphere in 1963.

It is estimated that the east coast population of humpbacks was sadly little over 100 individuals.

Part of Australia’s whaling history During the 1790's and early 1800's whaling ships, mainly from Britain, visited ports in New South Wales and Tasmania to unload whale products, but commercial whaling in Australia really developed during the late 1820's. Whalers obtained oil from the whales for use as lamp fuel, lubricants, candles and as a base for perfumes and soaps. By 1845 twenty six thousand whales had been killed and by 1935 there were so few Southern Right Whales remaining that whaling ceased and they became protected internationally. Before World War II, most hunting for humpback whales took place on the west coast and in Antarctic waters. On the east coast of Australia, humpback whaling was initially much less intense and very few whales were taken before 1949.

By 1956 whaling stations were operating at Norfolk Island and Moreton Island in Queensland, and at Byron Bay and Eden in New South Wales. Between 1950 and 1962 nearly

12,500 humpbacks were killed and processed along the east coast.

Australia ceased whaling in 1978 when international treaties were signed by most whaling countries. However, some of the signatories to the treaties continue to hunt whales for what they call "research" purposes.

Aerial and surface surveys indicate that, from the estimated 200 to 500 Humpbacks left in 1962, about 1,900 now migrate up the east coast of Australia. Humpback whale numbers are recovering slowly and now there are thought to be up to 5,000 breeding in Australian waters. Humpbacks, along with the Bowhead, Blue and Right whales, are some of the most endangered species on the earth.

During a 2010 survey, at Point Lookout it had found the population has rebounded from whaling strongly.

Over the past years there has been a very consistent rate of increase per annum – effectively a doubling of the population every seven years or so.

Our Humpback facts!

The Humpback whale is a species of Baleen whale. One of the larger rorqual species, adults range in length from 12–16 m and weigh about 36,000 kg.

The Humpback has a distinctive body shape, with long pectoral fins and a knobbly head Life span - 45 – 50 years No Teeth - The Humpback Whale has no teeth instead they have baleen plates, that acts like a giant sieve!

Blow Holes - The Humpback Whale has two blow holes, one for each lung.

Each of its lungs is the size of a small car. Wow, that’s a lot of air!

Baby Whales - A baby Whale is called a calf. They are nearly one tonne when they are born and suckle up to 600 litres of milk a day from their mums!

Song - Males produce a complex song lasting 10 to 20 minutes, which they repeat for hours at a time. Its purpose is not clear, though it may have a role in mating.

The Bay’s other Whales Antarctic Minke Whale Bryde's Whales is more robust than the other large rorquals (large baleen whales).

The rostrum of the Antarctic Minke Whale is very narrow and pointed, with a single ridge on the head . museumvictoria.com.au The maximum length of Antarctic Minke Whales appears to be around 9.8 m. Are not gregarious and tend to swim alone or in pairs, large feeding groups of up to 400 individuals may form. Minke whales are known to be curious, often approaching boats from a distance. Antarctic Minke Whales probably do not migrate as far north as Dwarf Minke Whales but this species does undergo extensive migration between the summer Antarctic feeding grounds and winter sub-tropical to tropical breeding grounds. Mature Antarctic Minke Whales feed primarily on the Antarctic Krill. www.environment.gov.au

Pilot Whales have a robust body with a thick tail stock.

The Long-finned Pilot Whale is widely recorded in colder waters off southern Australia.

The Short-Finned Pilot Whales reaches physical maturity at approximately 17 years and is more than 5 m in length, a maximum age of 46 years. while females are smaller at 4.8 m and reach 63 years. Feeding mainly on squid, cuttlefish, octopus and some fish. www.environment.gov.au

Southern Right Whales are large baleen whales with a less streamlined shape than balaenopterids like Humpback Whales.

They grow to a maximum length of 17.5 m and weight of 80 t, with mature museumvictoria.com.au females often slightly larger than males.

The majority of are uniformly black in colour, no dorsal fin.

Thought to be solitary during migration, or accompanied by a dependent calf or occasionally a yearling offspring. Forming large groups in breeding areas. These have been recorded in the coastal waters of all Australian states with the exception of the Northern Territory. Krill is a major food source and require adequate supplies of food to accumulate energy reserves that is essential for migration and breeding. Let the fun and Succulent seafood, colourful parades, fireworks, culture, live music and a blessing will all be part of the winter fun on the Fraser Coast. The festivities begin with the Blessing of the Fleet on Saturday, July 21, which combines a rich blend of experiences.

Visitors can tour whale watching vessels, wander through market stalls packed with locally made crafts and affordable food, enjoy a sail past, listen to great live entertainment and get a kick out of the fireworks as the region’s famous fleet is blessed in a centuries-old tradition at the Great Sandy Straits Marina to foster a safe and prosperous season.

Then the region splashes out with the annual Hervey Bay Ocean Festival, presented by USC, from August 11 to 19.

A new addition to the festival this year is a kite flying day on the beach near the Urangan Pier on Saturday, August 11, with small $6 kites on sale for children to colour-in and fly.

Urangan’s Fishermen’s Park is the site of the hugely popular Hervey Bay Seafood Festival which is hosted by the local fishing industry on Sunday, August 12.

Serving up loads of seafood, competitions, tips for cooking and catching fish, live entertainment, art displays and sideshow alley, the festival also features a pop-up restaurant. Usually catering to a sell-out crowd, Tastes of the Bay is a six-course seafood and wine extravaganza featuring exceptional, local, wild-catch seafood fresh from the fleet moored nearby.

festivities begin The Ocean Festival continues the following weekend with the Whale Parade and Concert on Saturday, August 18, and the Paddle Out for Whales on Sunday, August 19.

Illuminated floats will be ready to roll for the family favourite whale parade themed ‘enchantment under the sea’ this year.

Crowds line the Esplanade route from the starting point at Frank St in Scarness to the finish line at the Seafront Oval in Pialba.

The event also features a fabulous free concert, market stalls, all the fun of sideshow alley and a fantastic fireworks display to end the night.

The Paddle Out is a heartfelt tradition that began as a protest about whaling and has evolved into a welcome back to Hervey Bay for the humpbacks and an acknowledgment of the ongoing threats to whales such as hunting, pollution, fishing entanglement, industrial noise and ship strikes. Participants jump on paddleboards, kayaks, canoes, blow-up pool toys and homemade rafts to join in a circle for a minute of silence for the whales that have died or been killed during the year.

Visitors on the shore can also join in by dipping their toes in the water and enjoying the line-up of workshops, craft activities, live entertainment and environmental speakers.

Childers Festival 2018 The Childers Festival, an event so good it stops the Bruce Highway, will be held from 28 – 29 July. The festival kicks off on Saturday from 2pm with Stage One going until late, with a number of stallholders and food vendors operating in the Crescent Street precinct.

The main street will come alive with over 400 food and market stalls providing an unforgettable market experience on Festival Day, Sunday 29 July. A highlight of the festival, which is free to attend, is the opportunity to taste cuisines from around the world. Plan your day around the non-stop multicultural entertainment with five stages featuring a myriad of performers, artists and bands, and complemented by colourful roving artists.

This year, Ashby Lane, which is home to Baker's Military Memorabilia Museum, will be transformed into “Artillery Lane”, a commemoration of the centenary of the end of the First World War, featuring the Bundaberg Army Cadets and a performance from the Band of First Regiment Royal Artillery.

In the days leading up to the festival, there will be an exciting array of activities and events that include the popular Isis Central Sugar Mill and Cane Fire Tour, the delightful Opera by the Lake held against the stunning backdrop of Lake Redbrook, historical bus tours of Childers, to name a few!

Toogoom: 15 minutes from the bay

Toogoom is located approximately 15 km or 15 mins north west of Hervey Bay. To get to Toogoom from Hervey Bay, simply take the Pialba - Burrum Heads Road out of Hervey Bay and follow the signs. This picturesque area boasts unspoilt beaches, great fishing, wildlife, bird watching and most amenities.

Bring your boat and enjoy one of the Fraser Coasts best fishing spots, including the Toogoom Inlet, Beelbi Creek and Burrum Heads area. It has a boat ramp which can be used in all tide levels. Real estate in this area is still very affordable.

Currently, there are two new developed estates, now selling.

A place for the whole family

Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20 km north of Maryborough.

William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise.

It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way.

The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable.

Better outcomes, more opportunities for regional, rural and remote students

The Coalition Government has accepted all 11 recommendations of the Independent Review into Regional, Rural and Remote Education (IRRRRE), committing to a whole of government approach in response. “By accepting all of Professor Halsey’s recommendations, the Government is putting the education needs of the almost 400,000 students from regional, rural and remote communities front and centre”.

Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack said. Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham said.

“There’s clearly a gap between the city and the bush in the level of study or qualifications students achieve.

That’s why we’re creating an extra 500 sub-bachelor places at regionally based higher education institutions, and an additional 500 Commonwealth supported bachelor places for students at the Regional Study Hubs we’re establishing and maintaining. I’ve also asked Australia’s higher education leaders to increase the transparency of the student accommodation options they offer and to guarantee places for regional, rural and remote students”.

Minister for Social Services Dan Tehan said. “We’re lifting the parental income cut-off for the ‘workforce participation’ independence criterion for regional students from $150,000 to $160,000, and by a further $10,000 for each additional child in the family.

This will mean for a two child family the cut-off will be $170,000 so that students with both parents earning around $80,000 each from their jobs won’t miss out”.

Caution crossing creeks Be very careful when crossing Eli, Wyuna and Coongul Creeks.

Large volumes of water create steep creek banks.

Never attempt to cross Wathumba Creek or Moon Point estuaries.

Towing safety tips

First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job!

If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits.

In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working. * Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job? * Trailer or tow bar weights - check your car's handbook for the maximum weights allowed. * Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the car's mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars. * Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your car's handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too. * Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard. * Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights. * Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturer's recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move.

Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it. * Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc.) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly. * Suspension - Towing puts extra strain on a car's suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing. * Reversing - There are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner.

When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears.
