Whales migrate North from April to November Each year between April and November, Australia’s eastern coastline is a scene of spectacular acrobatic displays of humpback whales. After a summer of feeding on krill in Southern Antarctic waters, these charismatic animals migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth.

The majority of humpbacks in Australian waters migrate north from June to August, and back towards the Southern Ocean from September to November during their annual migration of up to 10 000 kilometres.

The exact timing of the migration period can vary from year to year depending on water temperature, sea ice, predation risk, prey abundance and the location of their feeding ground.

At a maximum length of 16 metres, the humpback is not the largest whale found in Australian waters.

This species was once only valued dead — mainly for its oil and baleen, or ‘whalebone’.

Beginning in Australia shortly after European colonisation, whaling and the export of whale products became Australia’s first primary industry. Early Australian whalers once hunted from small boats, towing their catch back for processing at shore stations which one was believed to be at Urangan on the shore at Dayman Park.

The development of harpoon guns, explosive harpoons and steam-driven boats made commercial whaling so efficient that many whale species came very close to extinction. When southern right whales and blue whales became scarce, Australian whalers began to target humpback whales, until the International Whaling Commission banned humpback whaling in the Southern Hemisphere in 1963. It is estimated that the east coast population of humpbacks was sadly little over 100 individuals.

The Humpback - Hervey Bay’s Favourite whale Humpback whales are enormous creatures - about the size of a school bus. They are known for their haunting and melodic songs and for breaching the water with amazing acrobatic abilities.

Humpbacks don't normally have a hump on their backs; the name comes from the large hump that forms when they arch their backs before making a deep dive into the ocean.

Humpback whales are not the biggest whales - that's the blue whale.

Humpbacks can grow to 60 feet (18 meters) long, and they can weigh a whopping 40 tons (about half the size of a blue whale). Their ippers can grow up to 16 feet (5 m) long, which is the largest appendage in the world.

Their tails are also massive and grow up to 18 feet (5.5 m) wide. Like most whales, females are larger than males.

Humpbacks often propel themselves above the water and then splash back down, this is called breaching.

Believed that they may do this to splash off parasites,

but they may just do it because it's fun.

They also slap the water with their tails or ippers.

These behaviours may be used to communicate with one another. They may also be used to show dominance and health during mating season.

Humpback whales are known for their haunting songs, which are complex sequences of moans, howls and cries that often continue for hours.

It is believed only male whales sing, so scientists think they are trying to attract potential mates.

A dedicated band of volunteers run the Fraser Coast Wildlife Sanctuary at 31 Mungar Road Maryborough.

At the sanctuary you can pat a kangaroo, howl with the dingoes, laugh with the kookaburras and much more.

Childers Festival 2019 Mouth-watering cuisine, show-stopping entertainment and diverse cultures will be on display for the 2019 Childers Festival to be held on 27th and 28th July.

The event, which is free to attend, is the only event in Queensland that closes the mighty Bruce Highway!

On Sunday 28 July, over 250 food and market stalls will line the historic Childers streets, featuring a range of cuisine from all parts of the world.

Caribbean, Irish, blues, energetic Indie folk, South-sea Islander and indigenous music, as well as dancing from Colombia, Nepal, India and the Middle East will feature on stages found throughout the event area.

Street performers and roving entertainers will top off the varied and jam-packed entertainment program.

The festival kicks off on Saturday afternoon with Stage One hosting performances into the evening.

There will be a limited number of stallholders and food vendors in the Crescent Street precinct.

In the days leading up to the festival, there will be an exciting array of activities and events that include the popular Isis Central Sugar Mill and Cane Fire Tours, the delightful Opera by the Lake set against the stunning backdrop of Lake Redbrook, and a historical bus tour of Childers, to name a few!

Toogoom: 15 minutes from the bay

Toogoom is located approximately 15 km or 15 mins north west of Hervey Bay. To get to Toogoom from Hervey Bay, simply take the Pialba - Burrum Heads Road out of Hervey Bay and follow the signs. This picturesque area boasts unspoilt beaches, great fishing, wildlife, bird watching and most amenities.

Bring your boat and enjoy one of the Fraser Coasts best fishing spots, including the Toogoom Inlet, Beelbi Creek and Burrum Heads area. It has a boat ramp which can be used in all tide levels. Real estate in this area is still very affordable. Currently, there are two new developed estates, now selling. Real estate prices in Toogoom have remained steady during the last few years. Welcome to Fraser • Known for thousands of years as K’gari, or Paradise.

• Fraser Island located just south of the Great Barrier Reef • Fraser island is about 120 kilometres long and ranges between 22 km at its widest point to 5 km wide.

• Captain James Cook first noted the island in 1770 and presume it to be part of the main land and named it the Great Sandy Peninsula.

• Matthew Flinders came ashore over 200 years ago at Sandy Cape.

• Captain Willliam Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay determining that Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island.

• A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the Stirling Castle found there way ashore and the death of Captain J. Fraser.

• 1863 The first Kauri logs where punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu.

• Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canel and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers.

• Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914.

• Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935.

• A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes some as much as 70 metres above sea level.

Sand driving isn't difficult Some basic rules: • Don't be afraid to deflate your tyres (you can go down to 10psi without damage in soft sand if you absolutely have to • Never drive over 60km/hr on deflated tyres • Inflate tyres as soon as you pass the soft sections to prolong the life of your tyres • Avoid driving deflated tyres on bitumen (if you have to, keep speed to under 50km/hr).

• If you get stuck in sand, firstly check that you have engaged your hubs and are in 4WD. Once stopped, first try reversing over your tracks. If you cannot get out of the bog in reverse in one try, get out and deflate tyres more. Check that the diff is clear - usually by now it is deep in the sand and you'll need to dig it out with a long-handled spade.

If the sand is particularly soft it sometimes helps to clear 4 tracks - one for each tyre. This is also a good method for reversing out of a bog.

• Select a gear that will get you out of the bog without digging yourself in further. Try H2. Give it some revs to get out of the bog and onto a firmer patch.

• When driving on beaches never park on the wet section of sand. Always park your vehicle with the nose pointing to the sea and if doing a u-turn always drive towards the waterline so that the turning tyres are in firmer sand than if you turned with the vehicle positioned nose uphill where the weight of the vehicle will sink the driving wheels in the soft sand.

• ALWAYS carry a tide chart for the beach that you are travelling on and try to travel at low tide.

Caution crossing creeks Be very careful when crossing Eli, Wyuna and Coongul Creeks.

Large volumes of water create steep creek banks.

Never attempt to cross Wathumba Creek or Moon Point estuaries.

Before crossing any creek, walk through it, if safe, to check the depth of water and softness of sand. Never stop your vehicle midstream; your vehicle may sink or stall.

3. Inflate tyres correctly Check your tyre pressure once a week, when the tyres are cold.

Keep tyres inflated to a pressure slightly higher than that stated in the vehicle handbook, find the tyre pressure on the tyre placard, which is typically inside the glove box, on the driver’s door or on the fuel filler flap. Setting the tyre pressure slightly higher will aid in fuel economy and safer handling.

4. Check the wheel alignment Ensure the wheel alignment is correctly set and the brakes aren’t dragging, as increase rolling resistance will use more fuel.

5. Check your load If you can, reduce the amount of gear in your car. Things like golf clubs and toolboxes add unnecessary weight, which in turn increases fuel consumption.

External attachments ie: roof racks will increase wind resistance and fuel use. If possible remove them when not in use; and when you are using them, load carefully to minimise wind resistance.

Trouble free towing

First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job!

If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits.

In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working. * Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job? * Trailer or tow bar weights - check your car's handbook for the maximum weights allowed. * Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the car's mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars. * Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your car's handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too. * Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard. * Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights. * Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturer's recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move.

Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it. * Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc.) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly. * Suspension - Towing puts extra strain on a car's suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing. * Reversing - There are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner.

When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears.
