Gatakers Hotel application is music to our ears

HOW wonderful is it to hear of the proposed Gatakers Landing Hotel application? About time.

This is one of the most beautiful spots in Hervey Bay and aside from a handful of disgruntled local residents, the response to the project has been overwhelmingly positive.

When Gatakers Landing Restaurant originally covered the site, it comprised a commercial kitchen, a gift shop and an onsite residential cottage. The refurbishment and instalment of a Commercial Hotel Liquor Licence will provide the community with an amazing new hospitality venue for them to enjoy.

Fraser Coast Tourism & Events

I concur with the letters from Simon Watson and others re value for money from Fraser Coast Tourism and Events Ltd (FCTE) which organises certain local events (not sure about the 2 mentioned on 8/9/22). Until a little coverage very recently, I cannot remember ANY advertising of tourism in our local government area, let alone successful advertising. FCTE is a company set up by, and controlled by the Fraser Coast Regional Council who poured $14,475,000 of ratepayer

money into it since it was established 8 years ago.

So far the Facebook chatter on “Fraser Coast Regional Commentary” (670 members) has produced no (appropriate) response from Council, re various matters (including FCTE) and it is highly doubtful that an appeal to the state government would produce any result, because in recent years they sacked the mayor, laid several charges against him (most were later dropped), and installed their regional lieutenant as mayor.

The first issue getting a lot of negative chatter is the council’s pushing ahead with plans to build a new EXPENSIVE

administration centre in Hervey Bay on one EXPENSIVE block of flood prone land, and buying a second block several hundred metres away for the associated car park (with excellent bay views). There is a very high proportion of elderly ratepayers in Hervey Bay, so 2 blocks of land hundreds of metres apart is inappropriate. Council’s justification is to establish a “town centre” WHICH NO ONE SEEMS TO WANT, but council just ignores objections, and has never asked ratepayers if they want a “town centre” (real or otherwise). Council is also rebuilding their admin centre in Maryborough. It is on flood

The half-acre of land will see a full a la carte dining restaurant in the main building as well as a new bar, coffee shop and takeaway liquor outlet.

There is to be an acoustic engineer’s report undertaken to indicate what decibel levels can be omitted from the venue to ensure residents are unaffected by the project.

Perhaps most importantly, the developer has a life time of experience at the top of the Australian hospitality industry with multiple world class businesses under his belt.

It seems to be a somewhat common theme of this opinion piece, to be taking the high ground in an attempt to fend off the naysayers

Obviously, there is concern that this situation may be very similar to the recentlydisclosed, gross misuse of Ipswich ratepayers’ money by the disgraced former Ipswich mayor, councillors and senior council staff, via Ipswich City Properties Pty.Ltd. Only full disclosure can avert a repeat (belatedly) of the Ipswich misbehaviour. The population of Hervey Bay is largely elderly people, and council corrals

their support by numerous handouts of ratepayer money. Both Hervey Bay and Maryborough currently have ALP state members.

There are other matters that ratepayers are very unhappy about, but the above is enough for you to decide whether the story interests you.

Taj Mahal/FCRC

New Office

It was with a great deal of interest that I read the Letter to the Editor, titled the Taj Mahal in your last publication, written by Beverley Price, and the other Letter to the Editor, titled FCRC new office, by Terry O’Bryan.I agree totally with what has been written, but I would also like to add a few more points. I believe that , as this topic gains momentum, we are going to hear a lot more from the dissatisfied public, who are also ratepayers.

The comment Beverley made that the Council has a perfectly good area where they are now, is factual, and anyone looking at this site would agree it is a large area, and would handle easily a large development such as, a much larger, new council building, and perhaps, revamping some of the existing buildings, and using some of the existing infrastructure, would also keep the costs down.

I am sure that this could all be achieved at a lot less

I have the feeling,that ratepayers of the future will be still paying for this Taj Mahal proposed for Main St if built, for many years to come. I did hear somewhere in the past, that what ever was done in Main St would revitalise it. I do not believe that the site they are suggesting near the roundabout on Main St/Torquay Rd is going to do much in the revitalising department, other than creating traffic problems.

If we need to build on, or near Main St, what about the Hunter St, Old Maryborough Rd block, which I think was a council depot, and I believe the last thing on it it had a community radio station , as the last thing to go, before it has remained an eyesore for years. I would also ask the question as to what would happen to the existing site and buildings in Tavistock St. , or has this already been put on the table for discussion, or other plans made for its development.

I think it is time the council gave the public a lot more detail, and out in the open, rather than just an overview, and bring the whole thing up for public discussion. We have a right to know. If the proposed building with all the added inclusions is built

in Main St, I also fear for the traffic congestion that will be created, and I find the excuse that it will revamp Main St very flimsy.

Whale Parade –Going Downhill

I have been building floats for the whale parade now for many years and actually won a couple of prizes.

The parade used to be really great for the community and the tourists. But it has been going downhill now for the last couple of years.

This year was a complete disaster, and I believe that there will a lot fewer spectators and entrants at the next one.

The parade should have been left at dusk so the floats can be lit up. There also should not be rules dictating what materials can be used.

There should not be Hotrods revving their engines, as this has nothing to do with whales. Also, the theme for next year “A whale fo a time” has already been used.

The whole whale festival needs new organizers as even the seafood festival was not as good as it used to be when it was down at the mariner.

This is a whale tourist town and we should go all out to promote a great festival to bring in more tourists and more float sponsors, just like it used to be.

Wildlife Talks

The Fraser Coast Branch of Wildlife Queensland is extremely fortunate to have Ranger Jenna Tapply speak on the wongari (dingoes) of K’gari for its October Wildlife Library talks: Hervey Bay on 21st and Maryborough, 28th.

Jenna has worked with the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) on K’gari (Fraser Island) as a Community Engagement Ranger for the past ten years.

During her time on K’gari, she has been fortunate enough to be part of the Natural Resources and Wongari Management team. Her job consists of educating the tourists on dingo safety by giving visitor briefings, and other aspects of the dingo management program.

QPWS aims to inform visitors on how special K’gari is and how to protect the environment, especially in regard to the wongari.

Focus will be on topics concerning the wongari of K’gari covering its history, biology and lifecycle; some of the research projects undertaken including the outcomes; and some of the technology that is used to monitor the wongari in the field.

State Budget delivers on healthcare for The Bay

The 2022-23 State Budget delivers record funding for Queensland’s health and hospital system, including a $771.9 million operating budget for the Wide Bay region, to ensure better, quicker healthcare for all Queenslanders.

Across the state, the record $22.6 billion Health Budget includes investment in new infrastructure and more beds; a larger workforce; a focus on mental health; and innovative reforms to Queensland’s health system.

For the Wide Bay Health and Hospital Service, this includes the Hervey Bay Hospital Expansion, a $40 million expansion that will

deliver around 35 additional beds and a new rooftop helipad by the second half of 2024; and continued funding of $39.6 million toward the Fraser Coast mental health enhancement project that will deliver a new 22-bed acute mental health inpatient unit at Hervey Bay Hospital.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Yvette D’Ath said the State Budget would support strong growth in the health workforce, committing to employ an extra 9475 staff in this term of government.

“Investment in our healthcare workforce is vital – they are our greatest asset and the reason Queenslanders continue to

receive first-class healthcare every day,” she said.

Minister D’Ath said the budget included $1.1 billion for the Queensland Ambulance Service, and a focus on improving mental health and wellbeing.

“The investment will help QAS prioritise regional and rural services to ensure accessible healthcare no matter the location, as we recruit more frontline staff and open new facilities,” she said.

The QAS will also commission an additional four Mental Health Co-responder services in the Darling Downs, Mackay, Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast areas.

Each year, on September 29, vigils, services and marches are held across Australia to commemorate National Police Remembrance Day.

In 2020 and 2021, the usual celebrations did not take place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Marches are back this year in locations throughout Queensland.

National Police Remembrance Day is a day to remember and honour all police officers who have been killed in the line of duty.

Kimberley McLaughlin organised and held a fundraising morning at her workplace, the Fraser Street Discovery Holiday Park, to assist in not only raising awareness about National Police Remembrance Day, but also to raise some funds.

‘I felt this was a great way to help support National Police Remembrance Day and being as it was during school holidays, I also thought it would be a great opportunity for the kids to

see the police in the park and interact with them’ Kimberley said.

‘All too often, I feel like our officers can be taken for granted in the community. It is a vital job they do and every shift can potentially put them in harm’s way. Having a morning like this, is just a small way to express our gratitude’.

Blue Ribbons were available for sale on the day, along with some raffles, morning tea and a sausage sizzle.

Just over $1,000 was raised for Police Legacy in Queensland.

‘It’s not a huge amount of money, but it is just as much about recognising and acknowledging the great work they do’.

Kimberley especially wanted to thank the Fraser Street Discovery Holiday Park Manager Andrew Sturges for his support and organisation of the event, along with the kind sponsors who donated prizes for the raffle.

‘The police are truly our community heroes. It was a privilege to have them here’.

Local apprentices compete for international glory

COMMERCIAL cookery apprentices from the Wide Bay Burnett region will be putting their skills to the test at the prestigious WorldSkills Australia Competition at TAFE Queensland’s Hervey Bay campus on Thursday 15 September.

Competing first at a regional level, apprentices will go on to represent the east coast region at the national competition in Melbourne in August 2023, where one representative per trade will be chosen to represent Australia at the international competition in Lyon, France in 2024.

Thursday’s competition will see a collection of apprentices undertaking a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery come together in TAFE Queensland’s Hervey Bay training restaurant to compete.

WorldSkills Australia’s Queensland Manager Eric Davis said he is once again excited to see the enthusiasm and talent from the newest competitors.

“The WorldSkills Regional Competition provides competitors with the opportunity to practise and perfect their skills in a supportive environment, then test their skills against their peers,” Mr Davis said.

“Participating also provides

competitors with the chance to develop important relationships within their industry nationwide.

“The benefits for trainees and apprentices are extensive, from further developing their skills to networking, forging new friendships and creating exciting new career opportunities.

“The competition helps competitors to become more confident in themselves and gain greater understanding of their skill area and industry. Most importantly, they bring this confidence and knowledge back to their workplace to benefit their employers, work colleagues, and industry.”

The WorldSkills Australia Competition is the largest vocational educational and training competition in the country, where competitors test their skills across over 50

different trade and skills areas.

General Manager for TAFE Queensland’s East Coast region Ana Rodger said TAFE Queensland has long been a strong supporter of the WorldSkills Australia Competition and is excited to see the most recent cycle of the competition beginning once again.

“Vocational Education and Training forms an integral part of the Australian education system and this competition highlights the important role that skilled workers play in our industries and our communities across Australia,” Mrs Rodger said.

Mural

A MURAL depicting the history of fishing on the Fraser Coast has been painted on the side wall of the Urangan Fisheries cold store which faces Fishermans Park.

The mural was commissioned by the Fraser Coast Regional Council and developed in consultation with the Butchulla Native Title Aboriginal Corporation and mural artist Akso Juhasz.

“It links the Butchulla and European history of fishing in the region,” Councillor Zane O’Keefe said.

“The Butchulla People have been fishing these waters for thousands of years. They taught the early European settlers how to fish here and worked on many of the local fishing boats.”

“This was where we played as children, although the sea came to where the road is on a king tide then before they built the harbour,” she said.

“Archaeological investigations of the dunes on neighbouring properties show that they are 3,800 years old and contain middens which are up to 900 years old and were still in use up until the last 100 years.

“The Butchulla People have a long association with the area.

“The Butchulla also have a long association in the local fishing industry.”

Lorraine’s father, Mickey Wheeler and grandfather Percy Wheeler were local fishermen.

In about 1903, as a 19-yearold, Percy was one of the first Butchulla to hold a professional fishermen’s licence.

Her father worked with Nick and Ed Schultz, the founders of Urangan Fisheries.

The mural is culturally and historically accurate, artist Juhasz said.

“Aunty Lorraine told me a lot of stories about the local history of fishing and the families,” he said.

“She gave me pictures and I did a lot of research so that the nets, the boats and fishing methods I have painted are accurate.

“While they reflect the people and history of fishing, they are not of anyone in particular. The faces I created.”

The mural also includes a range of marine animals that live in the waters of Hervey Bay that were culturally significant to the Butchulla People such as dugong, diamond-scaled mullet, turtles and dugong.

Mrs Woolley hopes the mural will form a part of a cultural trail that starts at the Kundu Tree (scar tree) in Dayman Park and winds its way along the shoreline through Fishermans Park to Pulgul Creek – culturally significant spots for the Butchulla.

“It was for many years the home of the Hervey Bay Seafood Festival which was organised by local professional fishers.

“If it all goes to plan eventually there will be another shelter shed, barbecue and all abilities access to Fishermans Park.”

“A few years later when I was 19, I invited her to Sea Point on the beachfront and I proposed to her and she accepted on the spot.

“We then came to Australia in 1961.”

Lawrence says he’s never forgotten a wedding anniversary and even considered renewing his vows.

He said the qualities he loved about Olive during their courtship still shine strong today.

“If I had my life over again, I’d remarry her because she’s a beautiful person,” he said.

“She’s always considering other people and has a kind nature.

“There are no bosses in our relationship - we respect each other’s opinions and our differences.

“We don’t always agree on everything, but we acknowledge we are both entitled to our own points of view and it cuts out arguments - we don’t have that at all.”

For husband-and-wife duo Olive and Lawrence, marriage marked the passage to their happily ever after as they celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary recently.

As the lovebirds cut the cake among family and friends, they were asked what makes a happy marriage? The South

African couple answered, “respect.”

High-speed marine adventures for the Fraser Coast!

Showcase the place to be for local jobseekers

JOBSEEKERS of all ages are being encouraged to go along to next Wednesday’s Fraser Coast Industry & Careers Showcase to tap into current job vacancies, apprenticeship opportunities and long-term career pathways.

The free event, a partnership between Jobs Fraser Coast and Fraser Coast Regional Council, brings together local businesses, training providers and support agencies with current jobseekers and those on the hunt for a new or future career.

The showcase takes place at the Maryborough Showgrounds on October 12 from 1pm6pm, with a special focus on secondary students from 10am1pm.

Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said with more than 70 employers and organisations from a wide range of sectors involved in the indoor-outdoor event, it would be a one-stop employment shop for everyone from school leavers and career changers through to local businesses struggling to find workers.

“We’re so excited about this event and the possibilities it can open up for our community

members and, by extension, our region’s economy,” Cr Truscott said.

Training program provides pathway to Council jobs

The Department of Environment and Science invites you to provide feedback on proposed changes to the zoning plan for the Great Sandy Marine Park. The marine park is located in the Wide Bay-Burnett region and extends from Double Island Point in the south to Baffle Creek in the north.

FRASER Coast Regional Council is seeking expressions of interest from local job seekers wanting to take part in a skills training program that could lead to casual employment as an indoor or outdoor worker.

CEO Ken Diehm said Council was one of the biggest employers in the region and this program provided an opportunity for local job seekers to get a foot in the door and receive skills development training at the same time.

“Council has a pool of temporary and casual employees to draw on for a range of administrative, customer service and outdoor roles, with the first step being the completion of a training program,” he said.

“We are looking for people who have the motivation, availability and willingness to learn with up to 30 places on offer.”

Mr Diehm said potential outdoor team members would undertake a two-day skills development training program with those applying needing to be physically fit with an enthusiasm for manual work.

“The training program for administration and customer service team members is online and self-paced covering a range of areas including

general administration, computer skills, customer service, conflict resolution, workplace health and safety and business communication,” he said.

“About 50 Fraser Coast residents have participated in the TEMPO program since Council launched it in 2020 securing work in a range of areas such as roads, construction, water, waste, parks and customer service. Many have gone on to secure permanent positions within Council.

“The program is open to anyone living on the Fraser Coast and is provided at no cost to selected participants who receive a certificate upon successful completion of the training.”

Fraser Coast community groups and organisations planning events to celebrate Australia Day in 2023 can now apply for Council grants.

Mayor George Seymour said grants of up to $2000 were available for local Australia Day events.

“Australia Day is an opportunity to come together to celebrate the diversity of our community, and we encourage Fraser Coast community groups and organisations planning events for 26 January 2023 to apply for a Council grant,” he said.

“The event must be community-focussed with a wide audience appeal that celebrates Australia Day.”

Grants to conserve history

GRANTS of up to $10,000 are available for owners of heritage properties to conserve and enhance their properties and streetscapes under the 2022/23 round of the Fraser Coast Heritage and Character Incentives Scheme.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the scheme encouraged the conservation, maintenance and enhancement of historic buildings and places across the region.

“The Fraser Coast is steeped in history, and we should do everything we can to preserve it,” he said.

“The grants are a cocontribution with Council matching the applicant dollar for dollar, up to a maximum of $10,000 to undertake works to preserve or enhance our heritage and character buildings and sites.”

The scheme applies to properties across the Fraser Coast that are on the Local Heritage Register or selected commercial character buildings in the Maryborough and Howard CBDs.

“Council is very focussed on the conservation of local heritage and character,” Cr Seymour said.

“Our historic buildings, places and streetscapes set us apart from other cities and destinations, and they have shaped our sense of identity.”

Works covered by the scheme include conservation or restoration projects, painting, urgent remedial works, reversing unsympathetic alterations and preparing Conservation Management Plans to support development applications.

The 2022/23 round is now

The opening of the 2022/23 round of heritage grants follows Council’s recent decision to adopt a Refurbishment Concession Policy for property owners of heritage and other significant buildings.

Under the policy, Council can provide concessions of up to 100 per cent for waste and water charges and general rates if a property owner needs to close a heritage or significant building for refurbishment.

Applications can be lodged with Council at any time and will be assessed by a Refurbishment Concession Assessment Panel.

FRASER COAST MATES are excited to announce their inaugural Dinner Event on Friday 14 October at the Beach House Hotel in Scarness.

Featuring guest speaker Wayne Schwass, ex AFL Star and CEO of Puka Up with guest performer, Fraser Coast’s own Jade Holland.

Event organiser Darren Bosley said, “This event has been anticipated for many years and we finally have the chance to have this night.”

“His post football career will both educate and inspire you. He is the founder of PukaUp an organisation with a vision is ‘to create the environments for every person to have authentic and genuine conversations about mental health and emotional wellbeing’.”

The AFL world witnessed one of the great players for over 15 years while he suffered in silence.

Schwass is an AFL great, broadcaster and commentator who is deeply passionate about preventing suicide in Australia.

Puka Up organisation gives Australian’s the tools to create mentally healthy workplaces and communities through education, conversation and storytelling.

Mr Bosley said, “We also will enjoy the world recognised voice of Jade Holland who has been an advocate for mental health awareness for many years.”

The event will be a fun opportunity to learn more about the vital work not for profit organisation Fraser Coast Mates does for the community.

“Our community has been a strong advocate for raising

awareness for Mental Health and Suicide prevention.

“This is an opportunity to come together and educate ourselves to be a better local community.

“This night is aimed to be an annual event where conversations are shared, and we develop more ambassadors for our message,” said Mr Bosley.

Seniors Month celebrations bigger than ever before

THERE is no time for seniors to rest this October with more than 30 events taking place on the Fraser Coast for Seniors Month.

From talent shows, movie screenings and lifestyle expos there is something for everyone to get involved with.

Mayor George Seymour said the events are held to allow people of all cultures, and abilities to come together and connect; celebrating the essential role that older people play in our community.

“We hope by hosting inclusive and interesting events and activities, Seniors Month will bring people together within their community, uniting them through shared interests

and passions,” he said.

“It also provides a great opportunity to discover new programs and activities, and support services.”

The month kicks off on Saturday 1 October, the United Nations International Day of Older Persons.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Seniors Liaison Officer Juls De Waard said the jam-packed month was an opportunity for anyone over 50 to meet new people and engage with the community.

“Isolation and loneliness are huge issues so I am hoping that during October these events will encourage people to get out of the house,” she said.

“We want our seniors to be

confident, stay active and be engaged with the community.

“Seniors Month will provide opportunities to promote positive community attitudes towards older people and ageing, facilitate community participation, and enhance community connections.”

“I didn’t find my creativity until I was in my late twenties, I realised that I had been tap dancing around it for most of my life.

“My creativity was obvious to those who knew me. But for me, it was like a light bulb went off, and I finally saw what I had been missing out on. From that point onwards, I decided to embrace my creativity both personally and professionally and started to use my creativity to connect with others in a more meaningful way”.

Nat KoKo Keep On Keeping On

A large part of Nat’s family was born and raised in Hervey Bay, so there is a deep connection to the region.

It is a place where she feels grounded and connected, and it’s because of that deep connection that she can call the town home. Over the years Nat has seen many changes take place.

“When I left the bay after finishing senior high school, the first traffic lights in the area had just been installed and I felt that Hervey Bay was changing too rapidly.

“A decade or so later, I returned only to find that there were multiple traffic lights,

and “Centro” was now called Stocklands.

“Planting my feet back home is one of the most humbling experiences. Knowing that my mum went to primary and high school just down the road from me brings up a lot of emotions. The boat ramp where my father and I would launch the tinny from is only 500 meters away. I loved this place then and still love it now”.

On life, Nat says, “Many people face challenges in some way, shape, or form while growing up and into adulthood.

“Whether it’s getting stuck in

a tree on an adventure where only an imagination can take you or choosing which path to take with your future. No matter what life throws at us, we need to keep moving forward. As the old saying goes, “Keep On Keeping On.” With that attitude, success is inevitable”.

Nat believes that it is important to keep it real, stay true to yourself, say it how it is, and go forward in life with certainty and integrity. She also believes that by doing so, you will always know where you stand, and people will respect you for being honest and authentic.
