Esplanade mega project will drive Hervey Bay forward

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY support the new development proposal for the luxurious twenty-one-story project located on Torquay’s Esplanade.

We have been aware of this project for some time, it’s our job to know these things.

It marks an exciting phase for our city, showcasing significant investment and dedication to our prosperous future.

It’s important to acknowledge that not everyone shares the same perspective, as evidenced by various opinions expressed on social media. However, let’s take a moment to focus on the facts.

Over the past two and a half years, the average value of residential homes in Hervey Bay has increased by an impressive 68%, primarily driven by migration demand. I personally haven’t seen

Limited flights

The airport flights are so limited as to be almost useless unless you want to fly to Sydney.

There used to be early and late Qantas link flights used regularly by visiting specialists, these no longer exist. The Fraser Council own the airport wholly I understand, so aren’t we getting Bonza or Rex airlines to fill the gap if Qantas don’t want to upgrade their service I ask.

My family have a special milestone to celebrate in November and I would like to fly my son down from Darwin.

I find however it’s almost impossible to fly from

Brisbane to Hervey Bay when connecting to flights from other cities with the exception of flights via Sydney.

This Council I understand wholly owns our airport. So I ask then why are we so locked into Qantas link who do not fly early or late to and from Brisbane to connect with other flights?

Why are we stuck with using either Bundaberg or Sunshine Coast airports and driving home when our airport is on our doorstep but definitely DOES NOT suit the needs of its ratepayers?

I am so very angry about this, in fact, to travel from Darwin to Hervey Bay can take

as long as 24 hours!!

Is this Council in the pocket of Qantas too?

Why can’t we have Bonza or Rex Airlines in to fill the very obvious gaps in ratepayers’ needs?

If the Council does not know how to run an airport properly then perhaps you should consider leasing it out to someone who does! Or selling it!

For those seeking exceptional educational opportunities, quality healthcare services, and relatively affordable housing, Hervey Bay is emerging as the next big thing.

While I respect the sentiments of those in the community who prefer to preserve the peaceful fishing village lifestyle, I encourage them to also appreciate the high quality of life that an evolving community can offer.

Well said Rolf, Nice to hear your idea for personal service. Banks etc go out of their way to avoid providing personal service; seniors in particular will enjoy being able to discuss concerns personally with someone prepared to listen. The older one gets, the more difficult it is to express oneself well in writing; face to face works best.

Change is inevitable, and attempting to resist or control it is futile.

Our local Council should embrace this significant development as a recognition of our city’s growing sophistication. This is evident in their past decisions to approve projects that exceeded previous height guidelines, as long as they benefit the community economically.

The proposed development, comprising 187 short-stay rooms, 431 residential units, and world-class facilities, will only reinforce the belief that infrastructure forms the foundation of a city’s economic growth.

Grants support local projects and events

RESURFACING pickleball courts in Pialba and new tables and chairs in the Toogoom Community Hall are among initiatives being supported with community grants from the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Cr Paul Truscott said Council approved almost $56,000 in grants to assist 16 local community groups and notfor-profit organisations under the first round of the 2023/24 Community Grants program.

“Council’s grant scheme offers a range of opportunities for groups to apply for funding for projects and events that help ensure we have a vibrant, connected and inclusive community,” he said.

“It is great to see so many community-driven activities being organised across the region, and Council is pleased to be able to support

community groups to develop their facilities and events.

“It’s all about building better communities together.”

THE HERVEY Bay Advertiser is launching a monthly Community Diary from our issue of November 2nd, specifically catering to charity, not-for-profit, sporting and community groups to advertise their programs and initiatives.

From the Men’s Shed to health programs, Lions Club, Rotary, Neighbourhood Centre programs, Council programs or anything that is of benefit to the wider community, it will be found in the Community Diary.

Scarness parklet sought for precinct

Timo Van Hest has a vision to greatly improve the street appeal of Scarness and the Hervey Bay Esplanade, with the advent of a parklet.

With a vision to increase pedestrian activity for all nearby businesses including the hotel, clothing boutiques and adjacent services, Timo is calling on public feedback to make this happen.

“The Fraser Coast Regional Council proposed a commitment to establishing two new parklets in the region.

“Our application for a parklet was submitted in November of 2022. Since that time there has been no further development with policy, or commitment created,” Timo said.

“We have case studies with Madigan’s and Toast Cafe proving their usefulness, and the design requirements are available here. We believe, given the opportunity, that we will far surpass the minimum standards.

“A parklet in this position would create a point of interest in a highly visible, and usable place. An opportunity for respite, or a place to enjoy a takeaway coffee in the morning for footpath users.

“The parklet would serve as a visual indicator of the vibrancy and active community hub within the City of Hervey Bay, and the Esplanade as a whole.”

A Fraser Coast Regional Council spokesperson said, “Council is keen to develop new parklets to promote business interest in alfresco dining, and is in the process of developing a policy and guidelines.

“Council has recently purchased a parklet to commence trials at a number of locations in the coming months.

“Bar Soma’s petition was tabled at the September

Council meeting (Wednesday 27 September) and referred to the CEO for consideration and action.

“A response to the petition will be presented at an upcoming Council meeting.” Beach House Hotel owner Janet Persal welcomed any discussion that involved the progress of Scarness.

“This is a very vibrant part of Hervey Bay and we are always supportive of engagement with Council, particularly when it involves building our community here in Scarness.”

New Film on K’Gari

THE MOVIE industry continues to be present in our region with a new film beginning production on K’Gari this month.

Fraser Coast Films is about to undertake their second project in the space of 12 months with the proposed title ‘He Loves Me Not’ scheduled for filming in October.

Their previous production in Hervey Bay, 13 Summers, has finished their exclusive private screenings in Maryborough and Caloundra to rave reviews.

Producer Jeremy Stanford says it’s being considered globally. “It’s with our international sales agent…… we have also been approaching Australian distributers in the last few weeks. We are pretty confident it will be picked up

soon.”

The cast for the new project is already has a high profile lineup. Rhiannon Fish, well known for roles in Home & Away and internationally recognised series The 100, will be well supported by popular Australian actress Georgie Parker.

Producers were very excited to announce Lincoln Lewis, son of the legend ‘King’ Wally Lewis, joining the cast who will have a strong Queensland following. “He did a cracking screen test. He was head and shoulders about anyone else”, says Mr Stanford.

Executive Producer of Fraser Coast Films, local businessman Glen Winney, says there is opportunity for Fraser Coast based businesses

to support the new project.

“We already have some great local sponsors but we want a lot more local content, local product placement to showcase what we do well here on the Fraser Coast”, says Mr Winney.

“Even restaurants can support us with providing meals for the team…. everything helps”, says Mr Stanford.

Director for ‘He Loves Me Not’ Tam Sainsbury says the locations on the island are stunning for the production.

Surf Club back on patrol

THE PATROLLING season has kicked off once again at the Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club, the iconic red and yellow flags are a well known sight on Torquay Beach.

The Hervey Bay patrol season runs from September through May each year and is run solely by volunteers. The volunteers provided over 3100 hours of beach patrolling during the 2022-23 season, supporting an estimated 53,500 members of the public along the foreshore of the bay. During this period the Hervey Bay SLSC patrol members attended to 184 first aid cases and 7 rescues.

A spokesperson for the

club says their volunteers are very well trained. “Surf lifesavers are all first aid trained and many have further qualifications including advanced resuscitation and advanced first aid training”, he says.

Patrolling lifesavers have access to many resources for search and rescue purposes including Rescue Boards, Inflatable Rescue Boat’s, JetSki, All-Terrain Vehicle and soon with Aerial Drone capabilities.

While our beach is notorious for its smooth, calm conditions, it can still present with dangers. “The northerly winds and strong currents can

surprise those who may not be experienced in these water conditions. As the mercury rises, swimmers must also be conscious of marine stingers”, says the club spokesperson.

Surf lifesavers are encouraging beach goers to swim between the flags and always check the conditions before going in the water.

New Esplanade development to reach new heights

A NEW resort style development application has been submitted to Council that could be a complex that could be the start of a new look esplanade in Torquay.

The 21 storey development proposes a combination of over 180 hotel room accommodation with another 431 stylish apartments for residential purposes. The application states “The site development provides for four hundred and thirty-one (431) units in eight (8) differing formats and providing for floor areas of 94 m2 to 206 m2”. The location has been identified on the esplanade at Torquay which currently has the budget accommodation of ‘Buzzers’, surrounding units at ‘The Hub’ and the now closed nightclub Smoke ‘n’ Leather.

The owner of the land Sunny Beach Land Pty Ltd, is also named as a developer in the recent submission that indicates a complex that

compliments the unique coastline.

The submission provides the designs and layout of the resort that includes a hotel section for the first five levels. This shows 187 short-stay rooms and car parking facilities provided.

Level 6 is an entertainment area for guests like no other in the region. Some of the facilities that are included in the level 6 plans are a “communal recreation” area that provides a large resort pool and bar, barbecues and a children’s specific swimming and playing area.

From level 6 to the top 21st floor will be 431 residential apartments with views never experienced in Hervey Bay previously.

This proposal would be the first multi storey development exceeding six stories since 2006 when the original Peppers Pier Resort (now Oaks Resort) was built. There have been other recent approvals of 10 plus storey complexes since but no construction has been started.

The area identified is recognised for its potential with the location central for tourism to many of Hervey Bay’s favoured facilities including the family friendly swimming beaches. A Fraser Coast Regional Council spokesperson said, “This is an impact-assessable development application, which requires a broad assessment of how it will impact the community. It also means the public will have an opportunity to provide feedback before a formal report is provided to Councillors to make a decision.

“We encourage anyone interested in having their say about this proposed development to do so during the public notification stage of the assessment process.”

While social media has been fiercely debated by locals, local businesses within this precinct have been vocal in their support and focused their attention on employment opportunities and housing availability.

The application states a number of economic benefits including employment growth, that states “the proposed development will generate 1100 jobs during the construction phase and 250 direct employment opportunities during the operational stage.”

It also mentions tourism benefits, and connecting with other “business and industry opportunities that support or service the mining industry are encouraged”.

Darren Carter, Licensee for the Torquay Hotel, is very strong in the support for development. He said, “It’s great for employment. It’s great for Hervey Bay”.

He went on to discuss the ongoing benefits, “it brings more flights to our town, it helps with housing; it makes everything more affordable for the region”.

The application is expected to be considered with a decision by early 2024.

Schools compete to be Recycling Heroes

RECENTLY five local schools have entered a ‘Battle Of The Schools’ competition that aims to have environmental benefits.

‘Battle of the Schools’, an initiative organised by Express Recycling, has an objective to help reduce the environmental impact that our cans and bottles are having on our environment and marine life.

Express Recycling have seven sites across Queensland with recently opening a new Hervey Bay site.

“Our focus has been on the schools because that is where the change is for future generations looking after our environment”, say Business Development Manager Nikki Mullen.

It is a competition between schools in the local area to compete for the prestigious title of the best overall School Recycling Hero. The participating schools get to raise money through the initiative by simply recycling their schools’ eligible containers and encouraging their wider community to help contribute and support the cause.

The competition not only had the prestigious award of being the ‘Recycling School Hero’ for

their region but there were also two $500 cash prizes awarded, donated by the organiser Express Recycling.

The winning schools were awarded this prize who had been judged to have the most eligible containers collected and recycled.

The school that won the most containers collected was Xavier Catholic College with 4,219 units collected over the duration of the competition (Terms 2 & 3).

with community support, determined by customers from the depot who put their tickets towards a school, was Howard State School with 138,320 containers.

Kikki Mullen says the feedback has been excellent and more schools have already engaged with the program ready for next year’s competition.

HBNC launches indoor bowls to build community

HBNC is excited to announce the launch of its new Social Prescription Initiative: Indoor Lawn Bowls.

This weekly event, set to kick off on Friday, October 6th, aims to foster a fun and relaxed environment where community members can come together, connect, and socialise, all while combating isolation and loneliness in the Hervey Bay community.

Loneliness and social isolation have become significant concerns in our society, with adverse effects on mental and physical health.

In response to these challenges, HBNC has launched the Connecting Communities Social Prescription Pilot (www.hbnc. com.au/social-prescription)- a first-of-its-kind service for the Wide Bay region – which aims to support and empower every person to connect, participate, contribute and thrive in our community.

Thanks to the generosity of the Hervey Bay Boat Club, who provided four bowling greens and sets of bowls, HBNC is set to launch weekly indoor bowls get-togethers as part of this exciting new initiative, HBNC CEO Tanya Stevenson said.

“We are thrilled to introduce Indoor Lawn Bowls as part

of our Social Prescription Initiative,” Tanya said.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with our mission to strengthen our community by reducing isolation and promoting social engagement. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Hervey Bay Boat Club for their invaluable support, as their contribution has made this program possible.”

The term ‘social prescribing’ is listed as one of the 10 highimpact actions in the General Practice Forward View (NHS England 2016) and is a nonmedical option used by health professionals when a person has needs related to socioeconomic and psychosocial issues.

Is the face of Hervey Bay changing?

AS A RESIDENT of over 42 years, when I arrived the population was around 7000 and now it’s 65,000. The obvious answer is Yes, Hervey Bay is constantly changing.

Growth and economic progress are what sustains our economy, and it needs to continue to sustain our lifestyle. Most residents here are immigrants from other areas around Australia and overseas. Many fall in love with the place at the time of arrival and want to shut the gate behind them and keep paradise the same as the day they arrived but unfortunately, that’s not a reality.

There is much debate about the recent development lodged in Council for a 21-storey building and Council have a big decision to make on this which could alter the course of our future. While I won’t make comments on an active application as I don’t know all the facts of the development to make an informed decision, I will discuss the pros and cons of growth and development.

Firstly, Hervey Bay hasn’t seen a new build of a 6-story high rise for 15 years since the GFC and there is good reason

for that. The sale prices and scale of those developments has been unviable in the property market. Things need scale to work, look at all our small hardware stores that have gone over 40 years and replaced by one large $60mil

We want more restaurants but to have that you need resort style developments with hundreds of tourists to make it viable.

We need more jobs here to keep our youth because we have an aging population and well under the national average weekly income. The Tourism and Retail sector, along with Health and Construction are our biggest employers, so to create better longer-term sustainable jobs we need to build larger complexes that are sustainable to the growth.

For Council rates to steady off we need higher density around our infrastructure as urban sprawl adds enormous costs to Council.

Bunnings, small shopping strips replaced by Stockland, and the new Anaconda stores being built now with many new big box retailers.

For new flights to come to Hervey Bay such as Bonza we need more tourists and frequent users. The additional tourists will require more accommodation alternatives and the modern tourist is demanding a higher standard of accommodation and more things to do during their stay.

It’s a vicious cycle but it’s reality, so before we judge individual developments, we need to understand the longer-term implications of each major decision because they are paradigm shifts that change the course of our future.

HERVEY Bay’s only over 50’s Martial Arts Group with Close Quarter Combative, had additional reasons to celebrate grading last month.

The highly respected and internationally recognised Grand Master Kancho Terry Lim 10 Dan Black Belt attended to assist with students grading and completed a Master Seminar held in Hervey Bay

The local group commenced due to Master Michael Landas 7th Dan Black Belt wanting to provide people over 50 the opportunity to experience the huge benefits of Taekwondo.

Master Michael started the club in Hervey Bay three years ago and now runs 10 large classes per week.

The students are of varying ages and many have had

multiple health issues before they began.

Many students will say that Taekwondo engagement has strengthened core muscle and reduced pain, improved memory and concentration along with social comradery of being part of a club.

Kancho Terry Lim is an Australasian Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee, Martial Arts Australia Martial Artist of the year Master Awards recipient. He has mastered many styles including Karate, Kung Fu, Aikido, Hung Ga, Arnis (Kali sticks) and Loong Fu Pai to name a few.

Master Michael was also awarded a Certificate for International World recognition.

Association and Black Dragon International Association WASCA/BDIA by the President and Directors all 10th Dan in their respective countries around the World recognising him as a 7th Dan Black Belt World Ranking status.

Building the medical workforce in Hervey Bay

THE UNIVERSITY of Queensland is no stranger to regional Queensland. They have been operating the Rural Clinical School in Hervey Bay and beyond for over 20 years.

They also understand the need for more doctors in the regional communities and embed themselves in these regions through the important training.

Their classrooms are the public and private hospitals, specialist consulting rooms, general practices and community settings throughout Wide Bay, with teachers are dedicated and passionate rural clinicians. Students are able to complete the final two years of their degree in Hervey Bay, and are actively encouraged to remain in the area to establish their careers.

Rural Clinical School

Director Associate Professor Riitta Partanen discusses the importance of attracting medical students to regional communities like Hervey Bay.

“We know from the research, that early introduction to rural and remote medicine and repeat exposure through placements in rural communities positively influences a student’s intention to enter the regional workforce,

which ultimately is our end goal” she said.

The University of Queensland has established Rural Health Scholarships to financially support students who are based in Hervey Bay and pursuing regional medicine.

These scholarships encourage and support medical students, alleviating the financial pressures so many young people experience, and allows them to fully invest in their education.

THE CONSTITUTION is a legal document setting out the rules for how a country is run, including the rules for how laws are made, how the country is governed, the establishment of the States, Taxes and Trade, as well as the rights of the citizens of that Country. In Australia, our constitution defines our three arms of government –which is also known as the Separation of Powers, to ensure that no one arm of government has all the power. In order to change the constitution, there needs to be a public vote, this is called a referendum.

Australia has had 44 referendums so far, with the 45th referendum scheduled for 14 October 2023. Of the 44 so far, only 8 have resulted

in the proposed amendments being made.

The current referendum is to ask Australian citizens whether the constitution should be altered to prescribe a government body that would allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be represented in Parliament and in the Executive Arm on matters related to ATSI people.

In order for the amendment to pass, it will need to pass a ‘double majority’ – that means that not only do at least 50% of the citizens of the Country need to vote in favour, but also that at least 50% of citizens in at least 4 of the States and Territories of Australia need to vote in favour.

You may be hearing a

lot about the “Yes” and “No” campaigns aiming to inform people of what they are voting for. Interestingly, advocates for the “No” campaign include prominent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people Warren Mundine, Lidia Thorpe and Jacinta Nampijinpa Price. The main argument for a “no” vote is that it is that a few major community groups believe the voice is not enough, is dividing the community and it’s not a priority for the people. With the referendum just around the corner, it would be prudent for every citizen to inform themselves of the different positions before casting their vote. As Abe Lincoln said, the constitution is a “safeguard of liberties” so any amendment must be considered a significant one and every vote counts. Failing to vote is an offence, and you could be issued with a penalty notice.

Burrum Heads Men’s Shed thankful for Council grant

BURRUM District Community

Men’s Shed at Howard were successful in Round 3 of the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s Community Grants for 2022-2023.

The group is very appreciative of the support by the Fraser Coast Regional Council, which has allowed the purchase of a safer more efficient sanding machine, pipe to control the stormwater at the western end of their shed, chairs for the common room and a garden shed.

A spokesperson for the group wanted to publicly acknowledge this support for their organisation that provides an important venue and social interaction for the local men.

The Burrum District Community Men’s Shed plays an important role in the Burrum District by providing a safe environment for men to meet to learn new skills, enjoy the company of other men and to participate in community projects. Their aim is to promote the general, social, emotional and physical wellbeing of men.

“By supporting the social, emotional, psychological and physical well being of men, we are also an important vehicle for maintaining men’s health and for promoting healthy ageing” says the spokesperson.

President John Laffin says “The availability of these grants by Fraser Coast Regional Council to community groups provides much

needed funding for them to continue their important work.”

The grant allowed the group to install a stormwater pipe during a “working B” which members experienced the enjoyment of camaraderie while working together. A number other projects were

completed on the day with the members enjoying a “Sausage Sizzle” during the break for lunch. The purchase and installation of the edge sander has provided a safer cleaner environment by being more compatible with our dust extraction system.

Prostate cancer survivor set to tackle 72km for charity

LOCAL Hervey Bay resident, Evan Munroe is leading the charge to help raise awareness of prostate cancer by joining The Long Run this September.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) campaign calls on Australians to run, walk or ride 72km throughout Prostate Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness and funds for research and support.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the local region, and one Australian man will be diagnosed every 22 minutes.

Mr Munroe was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2022 at just 52 years old, and underwent a prostatectomy five months later. “The surgery was successful and I’m doing really well since,” he said.

“I’m taking part in The Long Run because we need to increase the awareness around prostate cancer, PSA testing and early detection.

“Prostate cancer is not just an old man’s disease – younger men are being diagnosed all the time and the impact on their lives can be significant.

“We need men to be asking for a PSA test and understanding their risks so that they are diagnosed early. In the first instance, it’s just a blood test and could save your

life.”

With one in five Australian men likely to be diagnosed in their lifetime, PCFA is calling on people to register now at www.thelongrun.org.au.

“I’m looking forward to taking part in The Long Run and covering 72km throughout the month to support this important cause,” Mr Munroe said.

Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Anne Savage, commended Mr Munroe for making a difference.

“Community action is key to cancer control, helping us to raise awareness of Australia’s most commonly diagnosed cancer and encourage early detection,” Ms Savage said.

“Evan is a role model and an inspiration – demonstrating that together we can make a difference, helping love go the distance against prostate cancer.”

MARGARET Richters was born in the picturesque coastal town of Kiama on the South Coast of New South Wales, but was brought up on the family dairy farm in Albion Park about fifteen minutes from her birth town.

Margaret’s upbringing was filled with joy and adventures, growing up as the eldest of six siblings— four brothers and one sister. She fondly recalls her childhood, surrounded by numerous cousins and with her grandparents living nearby.

Her grandfather was a regular presence in her life, creating many cherished memories.

Her great-great-great-grandfather actually founded Albion Park so

the family’s history in the area runs deep.

In 1979 the family moved another hour down the road to a little town called Berry. When she went to high school, Margaret developed a passion for tennis, playing doubles. She would walk a kilometre down the hill to catch a bus to wherever they were playing next, she loved the game.

Margaret recalls that her first job was as a dishwasher at the Dapto Dogs, a renowned greyhound racing club in New South Wales, where her grandmother used to work as the cook.

She met her husband, Fred, in Nowra, New South Wales. He was

in the Navy at the time but later transferred to the Army.

The pair connected through a mutual friend. They later moved to Oakey, Queensland.

Sadly, Fred had a terrible accident while in the Army, which resulted in him crushing his back after falling off a truck and popping three or four discs that had to be fused back together. He would eventually get a medical discharge.

Margaret had to rely on the neighbours as she had no family around at that time. She also had to go back to work.

Margaret says, “I was going to be a stay-at-home mum, but ended up back at the Westpac Bank then Fred’s specialist told us that to aid

in his rehabilitation we needed to move to a warmer climate.

“So, we did a bit of searching before visiting friends in Hervey Bay. I then decided that this was where I wanted to stay and got a job transfer to Hervey Bay.”

After the job in banking, Margaret worked in various roles, including a stint at a furniture store and later in accounting.

She eventually earned a Bachelor of Commerce and worked for Astute for seventeen years, nurturing her love for numbers.

After retiring from accounting, Margaret became the treasurer of Meals on Wheels as a volunteer, contributing to her community and helping seniors maintain their

independence.

Her retirement plans included teaching Tai Chi, a practice she had embraced for stress relief during her accounting career.

She has now been teaching Tai Chi for eight years, finding solace and improved mental health in its mindful movements.

Margaret’s adventurous spirit has taken her to various corners of the world, including South Africa, Europe, Dubai, London, and the United States with lots more travel to come.

Earlier this year she celebrated her sixtieth birthday, marking a significant milestone in her life.

While reaching this age felt a little daunting, she is grateful to be in

relatively good health.

Both she and her husband have now lived in Hervey Bay for thirtytwo years.

Margaret’s life is enriched by her twin grandchildren, who are about to turn ten. She values the fresh perspective they bring to her life.

Throughout her journey, Margaret has learned a valuable lesson: the importance of resilience in the face of life’s challenges. The past four months have been particularly tough, centred around Fred’s health, but Margaret remains steadfast in her commitment to facing adversity with determination and a positive outlook.
