HOW healthy is our local health system? It’s hard to know.

When you work in a media organisation, you often get to view the world around you from the perspective of press releases and statistics. Mostly produced by government or union groups, who are looking to spread their version of the gospel, or as we sometimes like to term it, propaganda.

Whilst the Publisher’s Point is an opinion piece and not to be confused with news reporting, it is a place where I freely express my view and invite you to share yours, both for and against.

I am having trouble reconciling how our health system in Hervey Bay is performing. I

can’t land on a true north view with this. Let me explain.

As life sometimes dishes up, my family has had to access a myriad of professional medical services this year, the same as many other families in our region, I am sure.

We have been exposed to public, private, specialists and GP’s. Overall, the quality of care, organisation and time to access has been overwhelmingly good.

The flipside to that coin, I have heard of many first-hand accounts to the absolute contrary, including long wait times, impossibility to see a GP, Accident and Emergency debacles and ambulance parking stations at the hospital. How can it be at such extremes?

As our population gets older across the country, Hervey Bay is in a very unique position. Our ‘new’ population is overwhelmingly slanted towards younger families.

This creates a dichotomy in terms of our health needs versus many other communities across Australia.

Our news cycles are filled with reports about Royal Commissions into Aged Care, Ambulance Ramping and response time, and hospital wait lists. Is that a broad sword across the Wide Bay health system that we sit under?

Convention Hall

In this week’s paper you have requested views on the establishment of a Convention Hall in Hervey Bay.

Prior to the 2007 Federal Election, a group of Hervey Bay people, primarily from Urangan State High approached the National Party Member for Hinkler for assistance in obtaining Federal funds for such a building.

As there is no suitable venue in Hervey Bay to allow the very active and good quality performing arts students at the local High Schools, Mr Neville eagerly embraced the idea.

I was part of a deputation to the then Education minister, Julie Bishop who also agreed to advance the proposal.

Needless to say we were delighted. Two stumbling blocks had stopped us getting anywhere before Mr Neville, himself a great supporter of the Arts, took up the cudgels on Hervey Bay’s behalf.

The State Government would not even look at the proposal and the Council were very luke warm to the proposal.

Unfortunately history overtook us and Rudd was elected and while Mr Neville remained our member and

continued to advance the proposal, as he was then in Opposition nothing happened.

That we need a large good quality venue for the performing arts is a given.

Getting Council and local members to pick up and run with the proposal is a different matter.

For government funding, the impetus must begin with the local community and Council.

Council seem eager to replace the Council offices with a new unnecessary building and to spend millions on a sports arena but no money or it seems enthusiasm is available to have a suitable

venue for performing arts in Hervey Bay in spite of the very excellent work being done in our schools.

It would be fantastic to attend orchestral and ballet in Hervey Bay. Lin Powell

E..scooters

The rules regarding speed on e-scooters has changed from 25 km to 12 km, on foot paths.

Yet anybody riding is not required to have third party insurance.

You as a pedestrian could be taken out by a rider from behind and have no recourse legally.

This has already happened.

Reducing speed is a small plus but as a pedestrian you are still a skittle like in a bowling alley.

Yes, they are great for cheap commuting, but at who’s cost??

Responsibility of these isin the hands of the rider, but you as a walker have no rights legally.

Here is the disparity of this situation.

Let’s look at the scooter itself. Question - has it got a speedo or a limiter fitted by law?

We rely upon our fellow man to do the right thing but reality

is different.

When riding a bicycle and approaching a walker from behind, it’s good practice to inform walkers to ring a bell....

Why isn’t it mandated on e-scooters.

We have workplace and safety rules in place, yet the powers to be ignore even the simple things.

Now let’s look a policing of speed...who’s going to implement this?

Police have radar guns but have they got the time (me thinks not).

Reality and practice are completely different.

There are flaws in every situation, like age and responsibility aspect.

A bicycle rider of any age can get on a bike and ride legally on the road...think about that for a minute.

Even a 5 year old...yet you as a driver of a car have to have third party insurance. It’s not even about speed. I’m asking for loopholes in the laws to be closed!!!

The fact that you have never felt threatened or unsafe is a great thing!

I do wonder how taken aback and shocked you would be if you had fists put in your face after twice saying “Could you please keep your dog away!”

I have NOT said all dogs are dangerous, in fact most dogs are amazing in the local area. I have personally been knocked over four times, my grandchildren have been knocked over and I have seen a gentleman bitten on the hand by an uncontrolled dog.

COUNCIL RULES state off lead dogs should be under effective control and some are

NOT!

Hence my suggestions for dogs to be on lead, if the dogs were to be under control like they should be there would be NO NEED to change current rules.

I am NOT trying to remove any opportunities for anyone merely trying to ensure safe access for all ages and abilities.

I have had people contact me directly with similar concerns and on local Facebook groups.

As for me, anonymous my name was at the start of the story and was written on my behalf as I struggle with communication this way.

I thank you for keeping this discussion going on. Uncontrolled dogs are a serious matter!!

Incorrect information in Publisher’s Point

A recent Publisher’s Point in the Hervey Bay Advertiser, stated that it was only a “handful” of residents who were opposed to the proposal for Gatakers Hotel and that the response was “overwhelmingly positive”. This information is incorrect. A survey was conducted last March by a company called CLS regarding a hotel licence. The result - the majority of the

respondents were opposed to the application.

Social media comments REDoes the Bay need its own convention Centre?

Yes, Hervey Bay does need its own convention centre; we have a population of over 63,000 people and can’t hold a function for 1000 people or a concert, theatre or any cultural event of any significance. We must be one of the only cities in Australia of this size without good facilities; we don’t even have Showgrounds or a sports stadium.

It’s a 30 minute drive to the Brolga from HB. You travel heaps more in larger cities to venues. The Brolga does exceptionally well with the types of acts they get and pretty much get everything every other regional centre in QLD gets. Promoters aren’t stupid; they would look at the whole Fraser Coast population when determining their tours. It’s up to us as a united community to actually support it and not just be annoyed that it is in Maryborough and not HB, where I live, but happy to support the Brolga if it’s something I want to see.

Boundary Road extension project progresses well

A SECTION of a key Kawungan road will temporarily close as work on a major new east-west road connection through Hervey Bay moves to the next stage. Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Denis Chapman said while the weather had impacted the progress of the Boundary Road extension, the project was now about a third of the way through.

“The works so far have not required major road closures, but that will change in midNovember when drainage works will start in Grevillea Street where the road will intersect with Boundary Road. “These works will require a deep excavation across

Grevillea Street, which will mean a full road closure at this intersection for about four weeks, weather permitting.

“This is a busy area with a grocery store nearby and a child care centre and school further down the road, so we urge motorists to take care and plan their journeys while this work is underway.”

“We thank everyone for their patience during construction and urge motorists to please follow the traffic control advice for this and any road project,” he said.

Cr Chapman said essential water main works would occur at the Denmans Camp Road end of the Boundary Road extension work site area

in early November, with the works to occur at night and expected to be completed in one night.

The Boundary Road extension project is being funded by the Australian Government ($7.7 million) as part of the Hinkler Regional Deal initiative, the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme ($3.1 million) and Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Would these locals saying no ever attend a cultural/convention centre in the first place?

Convention Centre means visitors. Visitors mean a cash injection into the businesses in community. It’s a yes from me.

Yes, I believe we need better entertainment facilities to be available here in Hervey Bay. Our population continues to grow and we need to plan now for future generations and to cater for predicted population increases.

The Brolga is a wonderful theatre, especially

for a regional area. In recent years I’ve been there to see my husband graduate University, my children perform in Eisteddfods and musicals, I’ve seen Human Nature twice, Marina Prior & David Hobson, I know there are other big name performers come like The Ten Tenors etc. The theatre is an easy 30 minutes from the bay. When I lived in Brisbane, we had to drive an hour and a half to QPAC for performances that were far more expensive. I have been to more performances here in 8 years than when I lived in Brisbane for longer!

Local law change proposed for e-scooters

RESIDENTS will be asked for their views on a proposal to change laws governing the use of personal mobility devices, including e-scooters, on Fraser Coast Regional Council footpaths.

“The changes are needed to cater for the implementation of e-scooter hire businesses as well as the increasing use of personal e-scooters by residents,” Cr Daniel Sanderson said.

“When the local laws were originally developed, they did not cater for e-scooters because they were few and far between.

“It became evident during the e-scooter trial that the local laws had to change to keep pace with modern trends and the increasing use of personal mobility devices.

“A part of the process to change the local law is a call for public feedback. The feedback will help us ensure that personal mobility devices are used safely on Council footpaths.

“The recent changes to e-scooter regulations by the Queensland Government will also help ensure people are safe.”

The call for feedback on the

proposal will be held later this year and facilitated through Council’s Engagement Hub website - https://frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/

“I urge residents to log on and register on the Engagement Hub so they receive alerts when Council is calling for feedback,” Cr Sanderson said.

Interim local laws have enabled the recent use of e-scooters on footpaths as part of the e-scooter trial, however, the current interim local law will expire on 19 February 2023.

“We look forward to receiving the feedback,” Cr Sanderson

said.

“It’s important to note that many of the concerns raised by residents during the e-scooter trial have been addressed by the introduction of new State Government regulations, especially those governing speed restrictions.”

The new Queensland Government laws came into effect on 1 November to lower speeds on footpaths to 12 km/h, increase fines to up to $1078 for dangerous offences, and mandate bells in addition to helmets and lights.

Hervey Bay Golf Club turns seventy five

THIS MONTH the Hervey Bay Golf Club celebrates 75 years of providing its members a golf course that has survived the toughest of times due to their resilient volunteers.

The origins of the course began in 1937 when the Pialba Golf Club created a nine hole golf course that included The Esplanade at Point Vernon where many golf balls ended up in the ocean.

During World War 2, the club had decided on a three year recess that led to the course deteriorating badly.

In 1946 a small membership purchased 150 acres of land, which included a house that became a licensed bar, and built a new nine hole course with an official opening a year later.

Twenty years on, a

clubhouse was built followed by another nine holes being added in 1977.

The development in the last 20 years has seen significant improvements, including renovated tees, new greens and a large dam constructed.

The Hervey Bay RSL has leased The Clubhouse, which has contributed to the golf club being in a very healthy financial position.

“Our partnership with the RSL is very strong,” said recently retired secretary Dawn Spencer. She said this allowed the club to focus on course refurbishments while the members also received improved facilities inside the Clubhouse.

Festivities for the 75th birthday celebrations are planned for the weekend of November 26 and 27, culminating with an ‘Afternoon on the Green’ from 2pm on Sunday, November 27, for past and present Golf Club members and their partners.

The afternoon will include live music by popular local band Soul City, food and drinks and the cutting of a birthday cake by the club’s youngest and oldest members. It’s the perfect opportunity for past and present members to reminisce on the proud history and how far the club has come today.

Marine Rescue navigates fifty years

The celebration of 50 years of service to the Hervey Bay community was attended by over 100 current and former volunteers, along with many special guests.

The gathering included members from the early days of Hervey Bay Air Sea Rescue (HBASR) and Marine Rescue Hervey Bay (MRHB), dating back to its formation in 1972.

Six former Commodores were joined by the current Commodore in cutting the birthday cake. Members of Marine Rescue Hervey Bay, come from diverse backgrounds to continue the mission of ‘Saving Of Lives At Sea’.

A panel discussion was held

during the function with three former Commodores who shared their experiences from their time in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.

This was followed by the official launch of the book ‘The First 50 Years’ by Councillor David Lee. Creation of the book that gives a pictorial history of squadron operations, including early pictures of Urangan Boat Harbour.

This was made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Fraser Coast Regional Council.

Current MRHB Commodore, Graeme Davies said, “It was great to have so many current and former members together to celebrate our history, and it was a clear indication that our squadron will strongly serve our community into the future.”

Graeme continued, “While Marine Rescue Hervey Bay serves the community, we could never be able to do so without the support of organisations such as Hyne Timber and Hervey Bay RSL, as well as the community more broadly.”

Marine Rescue Hervey Bay are always looking out for new volunteers for on-water roles, but also on-shore roles such as administration, fundraising and radio operator roles.

Aqua Ninja course opens at WetSide

BUDDING Ninjas queued up on Saturday, November 5 to attempt to claim the crown at the Aqua Ninja course at WetSide in Hervey Bay.

The Fraser Coast Regional Council awarded the $1.3 million contract to replace the WaveRider with the Aqua Adventure Course to Playscape Creations.

Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said the new playground was a welcome addition to the popular Hervey Bay venue.

“The project was funded through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program,” he said.

“It will add a new dimension to recreation in the Bay which helps enhance the city’s liveability while boosting local jobs and supporting local businesses,” Mr Pitt said.

The course is made up of nine linked challenges which test strength, agility, coordination, and stamina.

To boost the stakes, participants are timed, and spectators can also activate water jets, sprays and canons to hose down participants.

The challenge and interaction between participants and spectators

will provide a great spectacle, and entertain on lookers, everyone will want to get involved, Cr Wellings said.

“The adventure playground will enhance the popularity of WetSide and expand the age range of people using the facility,” she said.

The cost has been set up $5 for a single ride, or $12 for three rides.

“The reaction from a group of youngsters who helped test the course in September was brilliant,” Cr Wellings said.

The installation of the Aqua Ninja course was one of several changes made at WetSide during the annual winter maintenance shutdown.

“Visitors will notice the changes, especially to the main arena which has undergone a significant

transformation with new softfall, repairs to the toddlers play area and reactivation of the popular light show,” Cr Wellings said.

The Aqua Ninja course will operate on weekends outside of school holiday periods.

Due to the shortage of lifeguards, the Aqua Ninja Course will operate from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays and Sundays, while the waterslides will run from 1.30pm to 5pm until further notice.

Council is in the process of recruiting more lifeguards so both the Aqua Ninja Course and waterslides can be operated together.

Hervey Bay swimmers on the national stage

ON THE 1st to 4th October 2022 the first ever Australian Country Championships were held in Darwin.

Swimmers from all over Australia competed in this event including four local swimmers from the Wide Bay region; Dyshart Morgan, Jayde West, Brandon and Elizabeth Carpenter and their families, who all flew to Darwin for this event.

All four members had a fantastic time, everyone gaining personal best times, making finals and experiencing the challenges of racing in the heat, humidity and monsoonal rains.

The event ran over four days, with the finals being held in the late afternoon once the heats were completed.

Dyshart Morgan - came out with seven personal bests and made it into the finals in the Men’s 13-14 years 100m Freestyle and 200m Freestyle.

Jayde West - came out with six personal bests and made it into the finals in the Women’s 13-14 years 100m Butterfly and 200m Freestyle.

Brandon Carpenter - came out with five personal bests and made it into the finals in the Men’s 15-16 years 50m Breaststroke and 100m Breaststroke.

Elizabeth Carpenter - came out with eight personal bests and made eight finals but withdrew from some finals due to illness on day three and day four. The finals in which she did compete were Women 13-14 50m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke, 200m Breaststroke, 50m Breaststroke, 100m Breaststroke and 50m Butterfly.

Elizabeth Carpenter made Fraser Coast Swim Club very proud when she gained 1st place in three of the finals, coming out with three Gold medals - the events were 200m Breaststroke, 100m Breaststroke and 50m Breaststroke.

Sport and Recreation Grants now available

FRASER Coast sport and recreation groups wanting support to improve their facilities can now apply for Council grants.

Cr Jade Wellings said nominations were open for the 2022/23 Fraser Coast Regional Council Sport and Recreation Grants for Capital Projects.

“The grants ensure that the Fraser Coast has a diverse, vibrant sporting fraternity which has access to innovative facilities that help promote community spirit, health and fitness,” she said.

“Eligible community organisations can apply for one-off funding to develop infrastructure that assists in the growth and engagement of sport or active recreation across the Fraser Coast.

“Council is very focussed on ensuring the long-term

sustainability of community sport and active recreation which plays a vital role in providing opportunities for residents to participate in physical activity and improve our health and wellbeing.

“Through the grants, clubs and groups can build their capacity to meet the growing population and improve the standard of their facilities.

“Priority will be given to proposals which enhance or establish regionally significant sporting facilities; enable multi-use by more than one sporting code or club and provide infrastructure that enables economic growth or increases participation opportunities in sport or active recreation.”

Council encourages community organisations to actively share resources and

will look favourably on joint club applications or multi-use projects, Cr Wellings said.

There is only one funding round per financial year for the Sport and Recreation Capital Projects Fund and projects and activities must be completed within 12 months of the approval date. The maximum grant is $10,000 per project.

Rotary backing the youth of our region

ROTARY of Hervey Bay City have been a supporter of many great organisations and individuals in our community and recently chose Operation Hard Yakka as a beneficiary of their generous donation.

Operation Hard Yakka is a military style youth diversion training program on the Fraser Coast that started in 2008.

They aim to instil respect, correct attitudes, confidence, self-control, anger management, self-belief and anti-bullying values in each of their classes.

Recently they proudly announced a 90% success rate with their classes

There are so many young men that have positive stories to tell after their course.

Schmidt, presented the Director of Hard Yakka Boot Camp, Bob Davis, and Senior Trainer Cameron Gee this donation to put towards helping the future camp contributions to the youth of the region, along with the President of the Rotary Club Alec Brown.

Mr Schmidt commented, “We hope our Rotary club can contribute more in the near future to this wonderful cause.”

The staff of Operation Hard Yakka have a variety of backgrounds; from exAustralian military instructors, police officers, youth workers, business operators and even past participants.

This group focuses on key concepts for a person including respect, attitude,

trust, confidence, motivation and many other social issues.

Family and friends have the opportunity to be present at their graduation which many recall as a very emotional but proud moment.

Recently Coot Camp Manager Mr Davis had a visit from a young man who did the Operation Hard Yakka Program back in 2015 at 11 years of age.

He is now a qualified carpenter; he has purchased a home on Bribie Island and is engaged.

Mr Davis said it is these results that keep him so motivated.

“He has come so far, and the future is his to enjoy. There are so many positive outcomes over the years since we started in July 2008,” said Mr Davis.

Grant gives wholesale nursery room to grow

A NURSERY wholesaler in Hervey Bay will have room to grow their business – and boost local jobs - with the help of a Rural Economic Development (RED) Grant of up to $200,000.

Hervey Bay Nurseries, which specialises in producing indoor houseplants and patio plants was one of 16 businesses to receive the RED Grant in Round 4 of the program.

Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said the grant would help the business stay competitive in their industry while boosting local employment opportunities.

“As technology advances, so do competitors. Hervey Bay Nurseries has identified a project that will help them stay relevant in their industry and

keep their competitive edge,” Mr Tantari said.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries Mark Furner MP said, “The project to expand the nursery business is expected to create six new fulltime job opportunities while creating a sustainable future for the existing employees of the business.”

Director of Archer Operations Alison Archer said the funding would be used to construct a multi-span growing shed.

“The project will involve building a larger multi-span type of growing shed. This type of structure provides an enhanced growing area with the ability to modify and influence growing conditions, which in turn, increases

the quantity and quality of output.”

Ms Archer said the expansion would allow the business to diversify its range of product offerings.

“We have recently expanded our access to include unique plant varieties from around the world. Our ability to work with these suppliers to obtain exclusive varieties will be achievable with the new shed as we can create the ideal growing environment for them,” she said.

Hervey Bay Nurseries is one of 16 businesses approved in the fourth round of the RED Grants program, with total funding of just over $3 million.

Overall, these 16 projects are expected to create more than 217 direct long-term jobs across regional Queensland.

PLANS for this year’s Christmas Day lunch are well under way, with the free community event being held at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre.

Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centres’ - Hervey Bay RSL Picnic in the Park has received a grant of $3000 to help cover the cost of a Christmas lunch for local residents who don’t have anyone to celebrate with.

The popular Christmas Day lunch has been supported by the Hervey Bay RSL since 2008.

THE HERVEY Bay RSL Sub-Branch have a dedicated Advocacy and Wellbeing office with a great team of professionals and around twenty highly valued voluntary Wellbeing Service Officers.

Their extensive veteran services are important to all the veterans who reside in Hervey Bay. It is great to see they offer them a helping hand of some sort.

The Sub-Branch saw a need some years ago to focus and specialise in wellbeing and pension services.

That is when a decision was made to establish a dedicated office exclusively for all those services. Since then, the office has grown in strength, status, and professional output with specialist veteran experienced people engaged.

The Hervey Bay Sub Branch services are free to ex-service

and current serving personnel and their families. It is a vital link between our community and veteran services for advocacy, compensation and support programs.

These include DVA services, pension matters and healthcare, just to name a few.

The Sub Branch in Hervey Bay recognises that our local veteran community is of a complex nature and characterised by many various veteran groups bringing friendship and camaraderie to those who need support or companionship.

The Sub-Branch’s local Advocacy services are highly valued by all those veteran groups.

The office provides a framework that connects those who have served or still are to appropriate services in a safe manner, without the need to

travel out of town.

The office has enabled the connections of a local service framework to complement the state and national network.

We are fortunate to have such a valued veteran service facility in Hervey Bay, with all the right network contacts made available to our large Hervey Bay veteran community.

Their office is on floor 2 of 19 – 21 Torquay Road Pialba, (office hours from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday).

They are just down the road from the big RSL building. Any veteran or currently serving person is welcome at the office to seek advice, support or a shoulder to lean on.

HERVEY Bay is one of the fastest growing cities in the country and the latest Census shows our current population is at 63,492. Hervey Bay could easily be a 100,000-population city in the next 20 years.

So why don’t we have the infrastructure to match our population base? Why do cities that are half our size have better infrastructure than us?

There has been recent debate over whether Hervey Bay should have a convention centre. The answer is ‘Yes, of course it should.’

The question should be ‘How do we not have one already?’

We are a tourism destination that should be the perfect venue for conferences, retreats, concerts, theatre productions and major events.

We also severely lack any land-based tourism attractions

that aren’t reliant on good weather.

With the Olympics coming up in 2032, we could hold lead events. But we don’t have a stadium that could hold 10,000 people.

We don’t even have the capacity to host football events like Bundaberg’s recent Cowboys’ game.

We are also getting bypassed for a new level 5 hospital which is going to Bundaberg.

This is in contradiction of all the statistics that say Hervey Bay will have the biggest population base in the area over next 20 years.

Hervey Bay’s current average age is 51, but our health facilities do not reflect this. We do not even have a cardiac ward at our hospital.

Private enterprise and developers can see the growth

and opportunity which is leading to major investments including Bunnings, Spotlight, multiple new land estates, apartment complexes, and new medical centres to name a few.

Why are all levels of government not seeing the glaring gap in our infrastructure? And, why aren’t they doing everything they can to get the needed infrastructure built and gather community support?

For a city this size, with our growth trajectory, we seriously lack key infrastructure to make this a truly liveable city and provide the cultural, entertainment, health, and moveability infrastructure we deserve.

Local law change could allow caravans in yards

Community facilities enhanced with grants

FIFTEEN local community groups will share in more than $60,000 in Fraser Coast Regional Council grants to help improve their facilities and purchase new equipment.

Cr James Hansen said the grants had been approved under Round One of Council’s 2022-23 Community Grants Program.

FRASER Coast residents are being encouraged to provide feedback on a proposal to allow people to let family or friends live in a caravan on their yard for up to six months.

“The changes will allow people to help family and friends who cannot find rental accommodation,” Cr Jade Wellings said.

“There is a critical shortage of rental accommodation across the country, and this is one way Council can help.”

Council is proposing to amend its Administration Subordinate Local Law (No. 1) to allow caravans to be used for up to six months in a 12-month period.

The arrangement would last until 31 December 2027 and then revert to the current version, unless extended, or

repealed earlier. Any extension or proposal to repeal would also require community feedback.

A copy of the proposed subordinate local law is now available on Council’s website at www.frasercoast.qld.gov. au/local-laws Residents can provide written submissions to Council by 28 November 2022.

Submissions can be sent via email to enquiry@frasercoast. qld.gov.au marked attention Public Consultation Local Law, by mail to the Chief Executive Officer, Fraser Coast Regional Council, PO Box 1943, Hervey Bay, QLD, 4655 or delivered in person.

“While housing is primarily a State Government responsibility, our community is looking to us as local leaders to do something in this

space,” Cr Wellings said.

“This proposal certainly won’t be a cure or a fix, but it may help take some pressure off and allow people to take care of their loved ones in their time of need.

“The next step in the process to amend the local law is to undertake a public interest test (to make sure that any State Government concerns are acknowledged) and call for feedback from residents.

“The proposed amendments contain a lot of detail regarding where caravans can be situated, that it is not a commercial undertaking so there is no exchange of funds, and that grey-water and sewage is disposed of properly. Council looks forward to receiving feedback,” Cr Wellings said.

“Council’s grants scheme ensures that community and sporting organisations are able to grow to meet community aspirations and needs,” he said.

“Our community groups and volunteers are vital to the health and well-being of our region, and Council is pleased to be able to provide support for these groups to develop their facilities and events.”

Cr Hansen said the Maryborough Amateur Athletic Club would receive $3,374 towards installing a flood-free mezzanine storage area for equipment.

“During floods in 2013 and again this year, the club’s fields in Maryborough were inundated with up to 1 metre of floodwater,” Cr Hansen said.

“Being able to store equipment out of flood reach will enable the club to recover more quickly from any future flood and allow the community to recover quickly.”

Wayne Martin Living Life

WAYNE Martin has a face that many of us who live in Hervey Bay know well. He is always quick with a kind word and ready to help those that need it the most.

Born in 1957 in Cremorne, a suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, Wayne was an only child and is surprised that he is here at all as his mum was very unwell for most of her life after being run over by a car when she was only two years old. Sadly, she never really recovered and passed away at the age of fifty. Dad was a truck and taxi driver and, by Wayne’s account, a top bloke.

“I had a fantastic childhood.

Luna Park, Taronga Zoo, and Sydney Harbour were all within reach. My friends and I would ride our push bikes everywhere, we had a lot of fun.”

“I met my wife Cathy in 1979. Believe it or not, we met in a butcher’s shop in my birth town. She was a customer, and it was love at first sight.”

“Meeting Cathy was the happiest moment of my life. We had three children close in age. This had its challenges but was a very special time.”

The family moved to Hervey Bay in 1988 and rented for a while before moving into their own home, where they still live today.

In 1989, Wayne was helping a mate and his business partner out by working in his furniture store in Pialba making custom furniture.

He found that he enjoyed the job, so he stayed. Together, they built the business up from building barbecue settings to doing kitchens.

The business went from strength to strength and bigger contracts came. The trio even landed a contract with the Army making Billy Huts for remote area housing. Despite the long hours, they were exciting times.

Wayne says, “The next contract started well. Towards the end of it, we were so excited

because we knew we could buy better machinery and go into being a full kitchen production company.

“The next day, we sent the truck off with the order and celebrated with champagne. But this was short-lived, as we never saw my friend’s business partner again. He just disappeared with the cheque and did a runner.

“He was never found, but we heard many rumours about where he may be. All that my friend and I were left with were debts and one big headache. Suffice to say that the business did not survive for long after that.”

Wayne had to pick himself up, put the incident behind him and move on. He had decided that he wanted to build and own a butcher shop. This dream took six months to complete, and with the help of family, Kawungan Butchery was born. Wayne proudly ran the shop for seven years; the business was quite successful.

Many will have seen Wayne Martin’s smiling face at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre’s Comfort Kitchen; he was the Team Leader there for almost ten years.

“Working in Comfort Kitchen was one of the best jobs that I have ever had. I was working

with a great bunch of people and getting to cook every day,” said Wayne.

Fast forward to today, and Wayne is now semi-retired but still volunteering at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, working in aged care and transport.

Wayne says, “We look after the grandkids regularly. I also do all the cooking and shopping, not to mention all the odd jobs that build up.

“When Cathy and I have time, we also like to travel and have recently come back from America and Canada, where we visited our boys and their families. Life is good.”

Pialba pair named champion of champions

LAWN BOWLS: Pialba Bowls Club pair Mark Armstrong and Nic Gosley have recently returned from the South Suburban Bowls Club in Mackay with some new silverware after winning the State Champions of Champions Men’s Pairs.

The pair played together for around 18 months and were pleased to win over their rivals.

“It is great to wear the Pialba shirt and hat at these tournaments when we play against players from the bigger clubs around the state,” Mark said.

The over 40’s Queensland bowler and his under-25 Queensland teammate believe their temperament delivers the results for the pair.

“We are both pretty laid back and calm on the greens even though we are pretty competitive,” he said.

The modest pair were pleased with the result but more impressed that they could do it for the Pialba club.

“They are proud of our achievement and were cheering us on the entire way,”

The pair did not drop a

game in the tournament, winning 33-11 in round one and a 25-17 victory in round two.

They scored a 24-18 third-round win before dominating the final 24998 against Broachbeach pair Chris Lanham and Sean Ingham.

They are not resting on their laurels and are preparing for the rich Ultimate Bowls competition to be played at the Moama Bowling Club in December.

“Bowlers from around the world will compete in a team’s event, and we will play with Cohen Liftin as part of the Pialba Phoenix team.”

It is the most lucrative bowls event in the world, with a prize pool of 500,000 dollars.

The UBC is a pairs event; however, all teams consist of three players who rotate during each event. There are three events played per year.

The format of the Ultimate Bowls™ has been strategically designed to appeal to both bowls enthusiasts and people who enjoy watching sport at its best in a fast-paced, exciting

manner. We see a winner of every match after just 25 minutes, with spectators both at the venue and watching on TV at home, on the edge of their seats.

One of UBC’s most exciting features is its dynamic and innovative scoring system. Players have the opportunity to score points with every bowl that is played. A ‘toucher’ earns their team 3 points, as does holding the shot when the leads have finished their bowls.

Both teams can earn points on the same end; 10 points for the closest bowl, 5 points for the second closest and 3 points for the third closest.

“It will be an exciting tournament to play in, and we are ready to go.”

Max effort from Quirk in Hundy

TRIATHLON: The Hervey Bay 100 and 50 has been run and won by Max Quirk and Prudence White. The annual triathlon event attracts people from around the region and Australia to compete in the “Suffer in Paradise” event.

Max Quirk was the first home in the men’s race ahead of Daniel Padidson and Jared Havemann, while Prudence White defeated Billie Pedersen and Hannah-Mae Sempf to claim the women’s win.

The event also draws athletes from other sports, including V8 supercar drivers Will Davison and Aaron Seaton.

Davison has competed in the event previously and loves the challenge.

The Hervey Bay 50 race

was won by Hervey Bay Lars Olsen ahead of Shaun Feuerrigel and Mark Gunther, with Dwyane Mckay in fourth and Will Davison in fifth.

In the women’s race, Courtney Le Lay was first across the line ahead of Carla Thomas and Toni Deutzmann.

On the day before, Huntingdale Super Saturday truly lived up to its name with some great racing from juniors in triathlons and duathlons.

The juniors set the standard for the weekend in front of cheering family, friends and spectators.

The Senior and Intermediate triathlon race was first and second to brothers Benjamin and Christopher Rudd, with Dylan Smith in third in the males.

In the junior race, Wade Wallis was first over the line in the male race, followed by Jack Veach and Lachlan Wyllie, while Madison Rand beat home Bethany Marsman and Olive Perrott.

In the junior aquathlon, Jake Perkins claimed the win ahead of Nicholas Campbell and Hugh Campbell in the boy’s race, while Elise Vaughan won the girl’s event ahead of Hannah O’Connor and Amelie Ing.

Jada McCoombes won the all-abilities race ahead of Joshua Hickey, Hallee McCoombes and Lachlan Philo.
