Hervey Bay needs its own convention centre
THE BROLGA Theatre is touted as the entertainment heart of the Fraser Coast and is an adequate facility today; it would have been cutting edge thirty years ago.
But I believe it’s time to have a serious conversation around the suitability of the Brolga to remain our flagship convention centre moving forward.
When it was opened back in July 2000, Maryborough and Hervey Bay were vastly different places to what they are today.
That was well prior to the 2008 amalgamation of Hervey Bay and Maryborough into the now Fraser Coast Regional Council.
You simply cannot prosecute an argument that

Why Main Street?
Unlike most places built as crossroads to elsewhere, Hervey Bay was a terminal for sending coal and lumber.
Matthew Flinders noted a shallow sheltered bay that became the basis of a fishing industry.
It appears there is an historical fixation on Main Street becoming its namesake even though the Bay avoided the urban sprawl resulting from a CBD with radiating circular expansion with the replication of suburban shopping centres that the Bay avoided being initially linear.
From the acknowledged dangerous Boat Harbour
Drive roundabout to the Esplanade, Main Street is single lane in both directions. Any substantial concentrated centralisation near the Torquay Road intersection is certain to create congestion as happens at the lights of Old Maryborough Road.
As the building of the Wellcamp quarantine white elephant shows, government can make decisions and build infrastructure post haste when it wants to. Even though public accountability has become increasingly irrelevant over the years and the farcical excuse of ‘commercial in confidence’ means nothing to associated industries; it is as much a throw-away line as
increasingly is public money.
Perhaps Mayor George Seymour would care to explain why his principal place of residence was chosen as the Bay rather than Maryborough?
If the Council has an abundance of ratepayer money, rather than set a precedent of rate reduction, and continue to subsidise the history of regional heritage, a chat with the State government may prove beneficial. It could result in rebuilding some of the removed right angle of the Urangan Pier easing the congestion that regularly happens at the end.
Residents as well as tourists,
Hervey Bay has not swooped past Maryborough like a gale force, to become the economic, residential and lifestyle powerhouse of the Fraser Coast.
Hervey Bay is the growing heart of the Fraser Coast.
Like many things, the amalgamation of the regional councils created understandable political bias and that is accentuated by the fact that the Brolga Theatre and Convention Centre is owned and managed by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.
I’m not having a crack at FCRC by any stretch, but I don’t see any Maryborough councillors having a bar of supporting a future focused
approach to attracting high end entertainment and economically rich conventions, if it involves competition to the Brolga.
For many residents of Hervey Bay, going to Maryborough is like visiting a foreign country. Don’t get upset, you know it’s true.
So what is our future plan? Even if we started today, it would be four or five years away.
Do we let great shows continue to pass us by; for convention tourism to wither on the vine?
It’s a hard conversation that needs to be had. What do you think? Do we need the region’s premier entertainment venue to be located in Hervey Bay?

Leash free beach!
Response to Mark Grimsley letter on 6 October
As a resident of Craignish, and a dog owner who regularly uses the beautiful leash-free areas in our community, I was shocked and somewhat taken aback by the tone of the unsigned letter regarding the safety of a local community member from Dundowran, due to unleashed dogs.
I am aware of the gentleman in question and a great admirer of his photography seen on our local Dundowran community
Facebook page. However to make it appear that all our dogs are dangerous and to call an end to the joy so many dogs and owners receive from these beaches, is grossly untrue and unfair.
I have 2 dogs and meet many, many dogs and owners, whilst enjoying the leash-free time before 8 am and after 3 pm. Some dogs are boisterous, friendly, and energetic others quiet and not concerned by others on the beach. Never have I felt threatened or unsafe.
It’s ludicrous to consider removing this wonderful opportunity in our beautiful part of the world.
To relate to a dog attack, which I’m assuming, was a
very shocking and sad event in Maryborough, is totally out of context, and is an attempt at shock reaction from readers.
The fact that the writer of the letter published in your 20 October remains anonymous is concerning. Troublemaking for what end?
I wish Mark Grimsley many happy hours on Dundowran beach, and thank him for the opportunity to view his magnificent photographs. But let’s be sensible here.

chosen by all for its peace and serenity, but the parking even the entrance from Cornfield st are both tricky.
Boat trailers accessing the very popular ramp are parked there. As for having what’s called music to all hours is ridiculous. This will bring an element not needed around here.
Also, this Taj Mahal council building in Pialba will add to the already chaotic traffic which locals try to avoid at present is sheer madness. Build it where we can access it easily on the present Tavistock site. With the predicted increase in population, it will only get worse in Main St and there will never be a CBD we are spread out along the Bay similar to Surfers Paradise, a holiday destination. That’s why people come here. Wake up and stop wasting our rates.

Say NO to the WILD LIFE in Gatakers Bay
My wife and I recently moved to Point Vernon in anticipation of a quiet relaxing lifestyle. The idea of living next door to a music and entertainment venue was furthest from our minds when purchasing our property on Gatakers Bay. When we initially visited the area we were very taken with the tranquillity and natural
beauty of the place. We now see people of all ages making good use of the facilities.
Young families visit with their children, even the youngest child is safe to play free from the threat of speeding motorists and alcohol fuelled misdemeanours.
At the moment anyone can enjoy a walk with their pets uninterrupted or threatened by roaring traffic and loud music. Fishers can park their vehicles safely
Everyone can just enjoy the natural beauty and encounters with abundant wildlife.
Will these pastimes presently enjoyed by all, be as carefree with a licenced venue promoting the sale of alcohol up to 14 hours a day right on their doorstep. Loud music blaring out all afternoon and well into the evening will force many of the wildlife species that now inhabit the area to relocate or vanish.
The publisher’s insinuation that expanding the liquor licence at Gatakers Bay will enhance the appeal of Hervey Bay is preposterous. What attracted us, and thousands more like us, is, the relaxed lifestyle as it presently exists.
It may not be apparent to the publisher of this newspaper but those of us who have relocated to this area have brought a great deal of spending power to the area. It may not be spent in his
publication but it certainly goes into the local economy, so the inference that the issuing of another late night liquor licence in a residential community will somehow benefit the local economy is unfathomable.
Reports by an acoustic engineer to decide the acceptable decibel levels is not reassuring. Just ask the hundreds of thousands of residents affected by the second runway at Brisbane airport what their opinion of this would be. They were assured that every conceivable aspect of noise pollution had been considered. Now BAC, Air Services Australia and interested Airline partners are spending tens of millions of dollars working out how best to minimize the noise problem they assured the residents would not exist.
We, as residents of Gatakers Bay welcome visitors to our coastal reserve to enjoy what the area already has to offer; natural beauty, tranquillity, a safe environment and a relationship with many native species.
If it is alcohol and electric entertainment you require then there are already several precincts in Hervey Bay that cater to your needs.

FRASER Coast residents interested in working as lifeguards, swimming teachers or fitness instructors at Council’s aquatic facilities had the opportunity to a ‘Try Then Apply Day’ at WetSide Water Park recently.
Potential employees were able to talk to current staff about what they do, tour WetSide, and do an instant interview.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Director Development and Community Gerard Carlyon said Council had recruited new lifeguards, but more staff were needed at
WetSide Water Park, and the Hervey Bay and Maryborough Aquatic Centres.
“Council has a range of roles available including lifeguards, swimming teachers and fitness instructors,” he said.

Feature film set for the Fraser Coast
AN ENERGETIC group of Queensland filmmakers have joined forces to shoot a feature film on the Fraser Coast.
The idea was hatched when Sunshine Coast cinematographer, Fisch Rasy and director Tam Sainsbury met while shooting a short film in Brisbane.
One of the actors on the shoot, Jeremy Stanford, had written a psychological thriller called Thirteen Summers set almost entirely on a beach location.
The three of them decided, then and there, to team up to bring the script to the screen. They agreed that the perfect place to make the film was the Fraser Coast region because of its incredible beaches and idyllic locations.
They set about assembling an exciting cast of local and international actors. Director, Sainsbury is thrilled to show the cast around the local area.
"I can't wait to hear what they think of Fraser Island," she said.
"A lot of people who travel internationally don't really know how many amazing places are right here on their own doorstep."
The local community and The Fraser Coast Council have
welcomed the film with open arms.
"We've found the community incredibly supportive and are really looking forward to collaborating with locals," Sainsbury said.
Although a lot of the film is being shot on the beach, Hervey Bay locals could well catch a glimpse of a scene being filmed in and around the township.
“It will be hard to miss a film crew setting up to shoot.”
For cinematographer, Rasy, making a film on the Fraser Coast feels like a homecoming.
"I grew up in the Wide Bay area, and as soon as I read the script, I envisioned it being shot on the Fraser Coast,” he said.
“I've always loved the beaches, the community, and find the people so easy to work with."
The film is slated to be shot in the summer months: the last week of November and into December.
Currently, location scouting is underway, as well as pulling together the crew for the shoot.
The Thirteen Summers production team can’t wait to get up to the Fraser Coast and roll up their sleeves.
The film has been supported by the Fraser Coast Regional Council and many local businesses.
The film has charitable status which means any donation to the film is tax deductable.

Bay’s future Olympian off to flying start
MORE than seventy of Queensland’s emerging teenage swim stars, with their eyes set on the 2028 and 2032 LA and Brisbane Olympic, are off to a flying start after meeting recently for the annual Swimming Queensland Tri Meet on the Gold Coast. It was Swimming Queensland’s medal factory in full swing over two-andhalf hours of power at the All Saints Anglican School indoor complex as the State’s Olympians of the future showed their wares in an exciting non-stop format.
The Queensland Tri Meet was the brainchild of Swimming Queensland Coaching Director Drew McGregor who brought together not only the State’s best young talent, but twenty of his coaches as well who have been in camp at near-by
Bond University.
The event sees the premier swimming State’s Junior Squad divided into three teams, named after three of Australia’s freestyle sprint queens in Queensland’s Olympic golden girls Jodie Henry, Libby Trickett and Alice Mills.
Amongst the cream of the rising talent was local Hervey Bay swimmer Xavier Metcalfe.
Xavier raced in 100, 200 and 300 Individual Medley, placing second in all three with great personal best times.
He also competed in the Boys 17 -18 years 200m Medley Relay, placing first and the Boys 15-16 250m Freestyle Relay, placing third.
Liz Kopacz, Head Coach for the Fraser Coast Swimming Club, was full of praise for Xavier.
“I have to say that I cannot
take too much credit for the development of Xavier. Up until six-months ago, he was under the tutelage of March Elder, who did an amazing job with him.”
“Xavier is a goal orientated young man with enormous potential. The concept of this Tri Meet was to allow young talent like Xavier to understand what it means to be a part of a swim team. Swimming is often seen as a very individual sport, but is very team orientated at the elite level.”
Liz described the Tri Meet as a great cultural experience for the young people to be involved in.
“Just basic things like learning to travel in a team environment, having exposure to different coaches, it all adds up.

AN URGE to recapture the spirit of Christmas was the motivation for Tammy Sloan to dig out the

“Our kids are getting older, and I started to feel the Christmas magic disappear,” she said.
“I hoped decorating the house would help rekindle the magic.”
And it did.
“This year we will be back; and bigger,” she said.
“We’ve got more lights, more reindeer and an inflatable screen to show Christmas carols and a snow machine to create a winter wonderland.”
Fraser Coast residents planning to light up their homes for Christmas are encouraged to let Council know so their display can be part of the Light Up the Fraser Coast Trail.
“More than 135 families put their Christmas light displays on the map in 2021 so people could drive past and enjoy the display,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour he said.
“So, if you are decorating, we’d love to hear from you.”
To be a part of the Light Up the Fraser Coast Trail, fill in the online nomination form that will be available
on the Council website www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/festive from October 19.
Residents can also get together to have a go at taking out the coveted Christmas Street Award.
You need a minimum of three houses to nominate for the street award.
The winning street is presented with the ‘Christmas Street’ sign to be displayed under their street sign for the next year.
Council will join in the festive fun and decorate giant
Christmas trees in front of the Maryborough City Hall and at City Park, beside the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery in Hervey Bay.
Nominations for the Light Up the Fraser Coast Trail, and for Christmas Street, close at 5pm on Monday, November 21 to give Council time to create the maps so they are available from early December.
The maps, and a list of festive activities from across the region, will be available from the Council website in early December.

Wide Bay Health 2022 Excellence Awards
contribution of team members across the Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service was lauded at its 2022 Excellence Awards at the Hervey Bay Boat Club. The awards recognised how staff and volunteers have put into practice WBHHS values of collaboration, accountability, respect, excellence and seeing care ‘through patients’ eyes while implementing, delivering and supporting vital health services across the region.
The Director-General of Queensland Health Shaun Drummond was a special guest at the awards, which was attended by the finalists of each award which were selected from a total of 174 nominations.
Wide Bay Hospital and Health Board chairperson Peta Jamieson said the awards
provided a great opportunity to not only highlight the many examples of excellence across the WBHHS, but also to reflect on what has been achieved.
“It is a great honour for myself and my fellow Board members to be a part of the Excellence Award as it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of WBHHS staff and thank them for the important work they do each and every day,” Ms Jamieson said.

Alastair Ginman (Senior Podiatrist, Allied Health Hervey Bay) for his contribution to measurable improved outcomes in patient care and reduction in the amputation rate of the local diabetes population.

Take a tour of the local recycling centre soon
IF YOU want a behind-thescenes look at how the 11,000 tonnes of material collected from the kerbside recycling bins each year is processed, then sign up for the tour of the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Dundowran on Thursday, November 10.
The tour is part National Recycling Week (November 7 to 13), which was founded in 1996 by Planet Ark to improve Australians’ knowledge on recycling and build better recycling habits.
This year, National Recycling Week explores the idea that Waste isn’t Waste until it’s Wasted.
“The tour of the MRF will give you a better understanding of what happens to the material you put in the recycling bin
and what you can put in the recycling bin,” Cr Darren Everard said.
“While a lot of things can be recycled, not all of them can go in the recycling bin; some, like paints and oils, should be taken to a transfer station or landfill site.
“On the tour you will learn some tips and tricks to make recycling easier for you at home and help cut contamination.
“Putting the wrong thing in the recycling bin could spoil a truckload of recycling which then has to go to landfill.
Bookings for the tour which is from 1pm to 3pm, are essential for the MRF tour as places are limited, and you must wear closed-in shoes.

Cr Everard commended residents on their good work to recycle.
“More than 100,000 tonnes of material were diverted from landfill for recycling and reuse on the Fraser Coast in the past financial year,” he said.
As part of its recycling efforts, Council also conducts education programs in schools on ways to cut rubbish and recycle.
“The education programs help participants learn how to ‘bin it right’ to minimise the amount of contamination in the yellow-lid recycling bins,” Cr Everard said.

Hefty fine for illegally feeding wongari - K'gari
ANOTHER person has been issued with a fine for feeding a wongari (dingo) on K’gari (Fraser Island) following a tip-off from a member of the public.
The 23-year-old Queensland man recently received a $2,300 Penalty Infringement Notice (PIN) after the incident was investigated by the Department of Environment and Science (DES).
Compliance Manager Mike Devery said the fine sends a strong message to residents and visitors to the island that feeding wongari will not be tolerated by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS).
“A member of the public told rangers the man was at the front of the vehicle line while he was waiting for the ferry at Hook Point back in April,” Mr Devery said.
“The person said the man was ‘brazenly’ feeding the
wongari, and given his place at the front of the cue, his offending was witnessed by multiple people.
“Following a review of the witness statements and photographs, QPWS compliance officers interviewed the man and he admitted feeding the dingo.
“The man told compliance officers that he threw biscuits in the sand to the wongari when he was cleaning out his vehicle.
“This is the second fine this year that has been issued for feeding wongari while waiting for the barge at Hook Point, and rangers are urging people not to do it.
“Feeding wongari can cause them to become habituated and approach people for food, which can put people and the wongari at risk.”
Mr Devery said the rules were designed to keep people and wongari safe and those who
ignored the rules could expect a fine or a court appearance.
“It is an offence under the Nature Conservation (Animals) Regulation 2020 to feed a native animal in the wild that is dangerous, venomous or capable of injuring a person,” he said.
“In 2022, rangers have issued 22 PINs for food availability and two PINs for deliberate feeding, and on many occasions members of the public have provided us with information and photos.
“Rangers are asking residents and visitors to report all incidents of food availability and deliberate feeding as soon as possible.
“I remind people that the maximum penalty that a court can impose for deliberately feeding wongari is $11,500.”

Woodcraft gifts for Xmas
THE HERVEY Bay Woodcrafts Club will be celebrating Christmas a little early this year with their annual Xmas sale on Saturday 19 November.
This club of wood working hobbyists gather at their Torquay shed each week and develop their craft in their growing facility that continues to provide some of the best equipment available.
Secretary for the Club, John Lush, speaks proudly of the facility that is expanding again with more space to provide more equipment for the members.
“We are working on new extensions because we need the space, which we are really pleased with the progress of the overall facility.”
The facility has all of the equipment needed for wood enthusiasts, including Scroll Saws, Bobbin Sanders, and woodturning machinery that is supported by a Ducted Extractor that provides a very clean and safe environment.
Members bring their own wood or the club accepts donations to help provide a good supply of future masterpieces.

YOUNG Hervey Bay resident Connor Smith is a kid going places and fast.
After starting out in kart racing, he won the Queensland Title at just nine years of age. He quickly transitioned into racing Junior Sprint Cars, racing around the track in a Daihatsu Charade at speeds that would scare most adults.
He finished third in last year’s Maryborough Club Championships within his class, racing against competitors much older.
Recently however, twelve year old Connor has taken to flying across the water instead of the land.
Jetsprint or Sprint Boat Racing is a form of motorboat racing in which Jetboats race individually against the clock through a twisting series of channels in less than a metre of water.
“Lawrie and Karen from Drop Bear Racing are based
in Hervey Bay and run an LS boat in the Australia V8 Superboat Championship. They introduced Connor to the sport and pardon the pun, but he has taken to it, like a duck to water,” Connor’s dad Anthony

“We then travelled to Keith in South Australia, where a World Class Jet Sprint Track is located, and he placed second again. After just three meetings, he is now leading the Australian V8 Superboat Championship in the Junior Division.”
Most impressively, because of his age and experience, Connor is racing with a restrictor on his boat to lower his speed, which others do not have.

Another milestone for Fraser Lions in sight
LONG-TERM serving Fraser Lions member Bruce Taylor is a man with enormous vision.
Bruce joined Lions back in 1974 and has held all the positions for Lions, including President at two clubs and Secretary of three.
In 2023, Bruce will have given an incredible 50 years of service to Lions – quite a rare achievement.
After ten years, he has collected what he believes is his 20,000th pair of donated local glasses, and even more than that, he has more in his sights.
“I enjoy doing this little task for Fraser Lions,” said Bruce, humbly.
“When unpacked, washed and graded by optometrists, we ship them to third world countries where they make an incredible difference to their new owners.”
“It gives me a sense of pride to know that I am greatly improving the lives of people in the third world who are vision impaired.”
“Over the 26 years that the Australian program has operated, the program has delivered over seven million pairs of refurbished quality spectacles to men, women and children in need in Africa, Europe, Middle East, Indian Subcontinent, East Asia,
and the Far East, China, the countries of the Pacific Rim and Southern Asia and Oceania,” Bruce said.
Lions Recycle for Sight Australia Inc started 12 years ago in Queensland and has now grown to receive 15,000 pairs of used spectacles each week.
Last financial year, they forwarded close to 500,000 pairs of refurbished prescription spectacles to over
twenty locations in the third world, greatly improving the lives of half a million persons in the third world who are vision impaired.

Applications open for Regional Arts Development Fund
FRASER Coast artists and groups can apply now for grants through the latest round of the Regional Arts Development Fund.
“The RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Fraser Coast Regional Council,” Cr David Lewis said.
“The fund promotes the role and value of arts, culture and heritage as key drivers of a diverse and inclusive community and strong regions.
“Previous grants have helped theatre interns develop their skills, stage a concert for the elderly and socially isolated, and for activities and exhibitions for NAIDOC Week.
“The RADF grants ensure that the Fraser Coast has a rich and vibrant arts community.”

Leeanne Enoch said as part of this successful, long-term collaboration, the Queensland Government will provide $2.13 million for RADF 2022–2023 to a total of 59 local councils, who will contribute a coinvestment amount of over $1.9 million.
“Established in 1991, RADF is a long-standing success story between the Queensland Government and regional councils, enabling local artists and arts workers to tell their rich and unique stories, boosting regional employment opportunities and other positive economic outcomes”, Minister Enoch said.
“For 31 years RADF has provided a legacy of creating new art and cultural experiences for Queensland audiences and communities, and a platform for professional development and growth across the regional arts sector.”
Applications for this round opened on Monday 10 October and will close on 14 November 2022. Applications for future rounds can be lodged at any time with the
last round closing on 14 August 2023.
In August 2022, Council was awarded $49,500 by Arts Queensland for the 2022/23 program which will be combined with $75,000 from Council to create a $124,500 funding pool for grants.

BOQ Hervey Bay Owner Manager celebrates 16 years in the Hervey Bay community
Later this year BOQ Hervey Bay Owner Manager, Wade Lineburg, is celebrating 16 years at the Hervey Bay branch which has become a financial cornerstone for Hervey Bay families.
It is Wade’s ongoing passion for helping his community that has resulted in serving multiple generations of Hervey Bay local families now looking after the grandkids of couples he first met 16 years ago.
“Finance is very personal and it’s often a life journey of setting and reaching goals. From your first home, weddings, kids, cars and holidays, I feel like I’ve been in a very privileged position to help people through the most exciting and sometimes daunting times in their life,” Mr Lineburg said.
Wade and his team have been involved in numerous fundraising and charity initiatives and is a strong believer in giving back to and supporting the local community.
“Over the years we have enjoyed supporting a variety of local events such as the Beach Volley Ball, Bay Break Cycle/Run, charity golf days and other worthy causes” Mr Lineburg said.
As an Owner Manager, Wade says he has developed long-standing relationships with customers helping secure their financial future.
“Being there for customers through monumental life moments is something I am passionate about. My team and I take pride in doing all we can to make sure banking with BOQ is easy and straightforward,” Mr Lineburg said.
“I would like to thank my customers and the local community for their ongoing support over the past 16 years.”

was born in Glasgow in February 1976 and was raised in Stewarton, Ayrshire on the West coast of Scotland, with her mum, dad, and older brother.
By her own account, Angela’s childhood was magical, with lots of fun trips to caravan holiday parks and many day trips. She also remembers working in her Italian aunt and uncle’s businesses in the town.
“They had the Pioli fish and chip shop, which has been running in the family now for almost 100 years. Back in the day, we also had several icecream vans and a video shop for those that remember VHS
cassette tapes,” Angela said.
Many years later, that same video shop became her first business, a baby/children’s fashion and accessories boutique. It was a successful small family-run business that operated for almost six years. Angela’s husband and two older kids regularly helped around the boutique too.
“Those same children, Caitlin, now 24 and Kieran, 22, were the best-dressed kids in town as they were the models for the shop and first to pose in all the stunning outfits.”
Angela’s first trip abroad was when she met her husband, Ronnie. They raced off to the Spanish Canary Islands for
a two week romance. Later, when the pair had kids, they spent every year with them on holiday in Spain and France.
“One could say we always had a great love of the sun, sand, and sea. Being from Scotland, we needed it a lot,” Angela said with much laughter.
In 2011 the family moved from Scotland to Hervey Bay. They had never been to Australia before but wanted a better lifestyle with a slower pace of life and better weather.
Ronnie had a job lined up with Downer EDI Maryborough. He was in Aviation as an Avionics technician at the time, so

transitioning to the rail industry was a big move and an exciting challenge.
Angela says, “When we discussed emigrating, my husband and I joked about having another child, so holding to a promise, Lily was born in September 2014. Some might say that the 17-year age gap between Lily and Caitlin is too big, but she is such a happy, fun-loving girl who gives us all so much joy. It has its challenges but has kept us mentally and physically young.”
Life has not been without its hurdles. In April 2021, Angela was told at 45 years of age

that she had suffered a SCAD (spontaneous coronary artery dissection).
“I had not experienced any chest pain, just some nausea, sweating and tightness in my arm. Lily and I were at the shops at the time. Fortunately, the hospital was close by. I spent a couple of days in ICU and then was flown to the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane.
“My troponin levels were over 17000, which was extremely high. Three days later, my angiogram showed a tear in the artery along with some other issues, including severe Mitral valve damage.”
“A year on, and I still have discomfort and ongoing health issues and await future treatment to repair the damage. Some days I have no energy and am just exhausted.”
“This was probably the most terrifying experience I’ve ever faced.”
“I am having further tests done and am on medication for the rest of my life. One thing that I have learnt is to never take life for granted and to enjoy every moment.”
“In the next few years, we hope to do a lap of Australia with Lily. This is assuming the older two have moved out,” Angela said with a laugh.

Hundy hits the streets for another big year
TRIATHLON: One of the Fraser Coast’s signature sporting events returns to Hervey Bay this weekend, with the 2022 Hervey Bay 100 festival running over Saturday and Sunday.
The weekend begins with Huntingdale Super Saturday featuring junior athletes competing in senior, intermediate and junior triathlons and mini and multiskill aquathlons.
The third ocean swim race of the Bean Beat Crown Ocean Series, the Barge 2 Beach, will also be held on Saturday, with 100 swimmers jumping from a barge two kilometres offshore and swimming into the beach around Enzo’s.
The second annual Hervey Bay Crit cycling race will also be held Saturday afternoon, with cyclists competing over a 1.4-kilometre course near Seafront Oval.
The weekend’s main events will be Sunday with the Hervey Bay 100, Hervey Bay 50 and team races.
The Beach House Hotel Hervey Bay 100 is a long course triathlon consisting
of a 2km Swim - 80km Bike18km Run.
Josh Amberger and Ash Gentle won last year’s event. With such a big event covering roads from the Esplanade to Point Vernon, there is always some traffic disruption, with road closures on Saturday and Sunday.
These road closures include the Esplanade between Tavistock, Torquay, Taylor, Main and Hillyard Street on Saturday and the Esplanade
between Tavistock, Torquay, and Katandra Street Point Vernon.
Hervey Bay 100 organisers encourage everyone to get out and support the event and cheer the athletes on as they compete over the two days.
“There is plenty of spots to view the event, particularly up around Point Vernon, and the competitors get a buzz out of the support they receive,” a Hervey Bay 100 spokesperson said.
Trying conditions for Catamaran State Championships
SAILING: Sailors from around the state and beyond converged on Hervey Bay to compete in the Queensland F18 and F16 Catamaran State titles recently.
It was two days of sailing and two days of different conditions for the 2022 F16/18 Catamaran State Titles, with Saturday producing wet conditions with rainstorms throughout the day, followed by a sunny Sunday with fluky westerly winds.
In the F18 class, it was a win to Emma Rankin and Beau White, who collected four wins and a second in the seven-race series. Eli Henbury and Amy Rehberger were second, with Mark Symonds and Shane Hatton rounding out the podium.
In the F16 class, Luke and James Oakden took the overall win ahead of Angus Musgrave and Emily Grimsley in second and Riley House and Adam
Hughes, a Hervey Bay local, finished in third.
“It’s been a while since Queensland has been able to host a State Titles with all the COVID interruptions as well as fewer sailors in our region ready to compete. However, over the last 12-18 months, we’ve seen massive growth in the number of both F18 and F16 sailors in Queensland with plenty more boats on the water and some fierce competitors ready to take home the top prize!” Hughes said.
The next major event for the Sailing Club will be the Torquay Hotel Multihull Challenge and Impulse Queensland title on the 3rd and 4th of December.

My definition of ‘innovative’ is providing a level of service that cannot be duplicated
THERE is a true old saying in business – ‘Nothing is so contagious as enthusiasm’.
That sums up my chat with the newly appointed General Sales Manager for Wide Bay Motor Group, Thomas Middis.
By newly appointed, I mean new to the role, but far from new to a rich vein of customer service that has been the hallmark of his working career.
Thomas is the epitome of people not caring how much you know until they know how much you care. That extended to making me feel as comfortable as I possibly could when I arrived for the interview, despite him being the interviewee.
When he started out as an apprentice electrician fresh from school, Thomas thought this was the career path for him, to gain a trade and always have something to fall back on.
Apprentice wages were such that he had to take a second job on the weekends, working at the local Telstra Store.
This was his first introduction to the world of customer service, above all else.
“When you work in the Telstra Shop in Young, in the South West Slopes of NSW, everyone knows everyone,” Thomas said.
“You are found out pretty quickly if
you make promises to do something and it doesn’t happen. Do what you say you are going to do.”
Thomas did the final years of his senior schooling in Hervey Bay and after relocating to Young, found his way back north to Brisbane, honing his sales skills across both real estate and motor dealerships in Brisbane.
“It is an entirely different culture in the city when it comes to service and
the importance of following through on contact and promises.”
“It is openly encouraged to sell people a car that day, as you will likely never see them again; that didn’t really work for me.”
“I love being able to go at the speed that the customer wants us to go.”
“Wide Bay Motor Group has a repeat business ratio that is the envy of the industry, and that all comes
down to doing the right thing every time.”
Thomas has been with WBMG for just over two and a half years, firstly in a salesperson capacity and then working his way through as Sales Manager of the Maryborough dealership and now General Sales Manager across the Wide Bay Motor Group of franchises.
Prior to that, not long after moving
back to Hervey Bay, he did a twelve month stint as a Custodial Officer at the Maryborough Jail.
He describes that as a giant exercise in customer service and people management skills.
“A lot of businesses found the COVID period very challenging, and it was not without some realignments for us as well.”
“We had to manage timeline constraints in regard to vehicle delivery, and many of those still exist.”
“It is the constant communication and keeping people informed that is the key; tell them what is going on before they have to ask.”
Although Thomas has only been at Wide Bay Motor Group for a relatively short period of time, he describes the culture as the best he has ever experienced in a workplace.
“The culture at WBMG permeates from the top to treat our co-workers as internal customers. Help them in every way we can. The team-first mentality here is a huge factor in work-life balance.”
Outside of work, Thomas loves nothing more than family time with his wife and young daughter and loves the fact that both his parents and his wife’s parents also call Hervey Bay home.
“It’s an amazing life here in Hervey Bay.”
