Got something to say about THE PUBLISHERS POINT?
Should new Council abolish Fraser Coast Show holiday?
I’M ON my annual rant about the Fraser Coast Show holiday. I make no apology until someone sets me straight.
Whilst it is a cute nod to a cherished tradition, surely it raises significant concern about its economic impact on our region.
It is probably costing our community a bucketload of money.
While I totally get the history and community spirit of the Show, I question the necessity of maintaining a public holiday to mark all its splendour.

Thank you for printing the balanced and informative piece by the folks at CoralWatch on the potential impacts of both the proposed Esplanade resort and overdevelopment around town on our shared environment in the Bay.
The headline should have been “Proposed resort WILL MOST LIKELY HAVE serious environmental impacts”...not could have. There is no doubt about that; just look at other coastal areas in Australia and abroad.
More importantly, the piece emphasises yet another key point, about our Bay’s
The vast exodus across the Fraser Coast Show holiday weekend suggests it might actually detract from the local economic activity rather than bolster it.
environmental well-being, to add to what most people have been making about this particular project, as well as the unchecked development that is causing serious impacts in congestion, crime and gaps of affordability. It’s time for the Council to acknowledge the voices of science and the majority of residents here, and the consequences of overdevelopment.
Do not approve this unneeded resort that will damage the beauty and environment of Hervey Bay’s wonderful coastline.

Growing population
What a great letter to the editor in number 84 edition from Syl Mod.
Excellent points and concerns raised with the issue of the ER, I live in the newer section of Eli Waters and they are still building like crazy here in the new Azure section; the traffic and chaos I see on a daily basis as I am an everyday bicycle rider.
These roads just cannot cope as it is, but these issues are rarely mentioned likewise the hospital not enough beds I had read Hervey Bay’s population had grown by 11,000 in the last 18 months wow think of all those cars!
As residents flock elsewhere, spending their holiday dollars outside our community, the supposed local economic benefits of the holiday seem illusory.
Furthermore, for businesses that remain open, the day is marred by heightened staff costs due to holiday pay rates, squeezing their margins even tighter.
Our region grapples with eleven public holidays annually, and it seems the Fraser Coast Show holiday could be a candidate for reconsideration.
Recognising the importance of our historical agricultural show needs to be balanced between celebrating heritage and inadvertently hampering our local economy.
We need to consider a fresh approach. It’s time for a candid discussion about the true cost and benefits of the Fraser Coast Show holiday.
I write about this every year, and I never receive any economic data or Letters to the Editor, suggesting I have it all wrong.
Is it merely a nostalgic gesture, or does it have tangible value for our community today ?
The answer may shape the future of how we honour and engage with the Show.
Your thoughts and feedback are crucial— please share your views by email or on our Facebook page.
The show must always go on, but for me, the holiday benefit is a myth.
Let alone when these people have an emergency or get sick or car accident it really is a terrifying thought now!
I am amazed how these counsellors only tend to think about the front end and not the back end consequences of this level of growth.
With the longer-term plan of houses all the way from the Serenity Drive traffic lights to the first turn off into Dundowran Beach at Ansons Road it really is a terrifying thought.

Hire Scooters
The hire scooter debate is ongoing.
The Council allowed them and then changed by-laws to allow them on Council land, jetties and pier without thought to the regular uses of the Council Footpaths.
The Council also removed all responsibility for them and put the responsibility on Queensland Laws to be enforced by our Police who don’t have the manpower to police all the illegal activities these scooter riders commit every day on Council Land.
The Council also stated that education is the way to go. No education is happening if they can just be hired at the roadside.
A recent article in the Sunday Mirror states that

laws are not deterring the riders from flouting the laws and endangering the lives of hapless pedestrians. This is happening on a regular basis here in Hervey Bay.
The Council instead of increasing the places the e-scooters can go should have imposed no go areas. Footpaths were for the use of people on foot and now those people have to put up with bicycles, mobility scooters and now e-scooters. Our Esplanade footpaths are not wide enough to accommodate all this traffic.
The old railway line pathway is less used with plenty of room and can get those e-scooters almost anywhere

they want to go in Hervey Bay and should be restricted to there and get them off our Esplanade.
Also because of the speed of private e-scooters the riders should have to get registration and a license for them as they use them on footpaths and on the road with traffic.
The Council needs to remove them from Council land and people wanting to hire them need to go to the business they are run from in Main Street and the proper education from that business is given before hire.

Land for Wildlife
We moved to this beautiful part of the world in 2000 onto our block which is mostly natural bush.
One of the first things we did was apply to be a Land for Wildlife property, with the Hervey Bay City Council Land for Wildlife officer, Peter Sykes.
I am just looking at a
2023 quarterly newsletter of Southeast Queensland Land for Wildlife. We haven’t received a newsletter in 2024.
Reading inside the last newsletter we received:
“Membership statistics have declined since last quarter due to the cessation of the Land for Wildlife program in the Fraser Coast Region.”
So the Fraser Coast Regional Council no longer supports Land for Wildlife.
Incredible!!
We are in an area that depends on tourism generated by our beautiful environment - whale watching, visits to Fraser Island, sandy beaches and Council is not supporting the conservation of our natural areas.
Thirteen local government areas in SEQ support Land for Wildlife.
Lockyer Valley, which depends on agriculture, has a LfW officer. Somerset Regional Council which depends on agriculture and the abattoirs for employment is a member. Gympie Regional Council is a member.
Come on new Councilsupport the conservation of our natural areas and please reverse his regrettable decision.

Property value increases
I read in the last issue dated May 2nd, complaints from Delma Taylor and Z. West about the massive increase in land values since 2022, which may indicate an assumption on their part that properties in regional areas in Queensland, like Hervey Bay, are somehow immune to such capital gains if Council behaves itself.
The past thirty years, however, would suggest otherwise.
According to the published sales history of my threebedroom home on a 600 square-metre block, in 1996 it sold for $92,000, in 2002 $114,000, and in 2007, $275,000, i.e. it increased its value by factor of 2.5 from 2002 to 2007, and a factor of 3.0 from 1996 to 2007.
From 2007 until 2022, that’s 15 years, it remained unchanged, before increasing by 90% to $520,000 in a mere 18 months to 2024.
This is the nature of real estate all over Australia, so let’s not just blame councils. Perhaps the escalating housing costs in Brisbane have made cheaper places, as Hervey Bay was during Covid, more attractive, thus forcing up prices here.
And make no mistake, within fifteen years, housing in our little patch of paradise will most likely boom again.

Police station set for $28 million upgrade
THE MILES Government has released plans detailing the scope and scale of a major new police facility at Hervey Bay.
The Queensland Police Service advises the original scope of the project has been expanded to include additional watchhouse cells, increases to the general dayroom and investigations areas, additional interview rooms, facility amenities and car parking upgrades.
Hervey Bay.
The $28 million project will provide Hervey Bay police with-state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities to support their work into the future.
The project is part of a record police infrastructure pipeline that supports the biggest investment in police personnel in more than 30 years.
That investment in the Queensland Community Safety Plan will deliver more than 2,000 extra police personnel.
The Queensland Police Service states that investment will deliver a minimum of 150 extra police officers to the police region that encompasses
Given the Queensland Police Service is currently undertaking the biggest police recruitment drive in the state’s history, to deliver on the government’s investment, it’s clear that police will require enhanced infrastructure and facilities to support the extra personnel.
Premier Steven Miles said, “Every community across the state deserves to not only be safe, but feel safe.
“That’s why the Queensland Community Safety Plan includes investment in frontline services and facilities, as well as funding for critical services to help with intervention and prevention.
“I know that Hervey Bay police officers go above and beyond every day to support their local community and it is only right that we give Hervey
Bay police the best possible facilities.”
Hervey Bay MP Adrian Tantari said, “Since being elected in late 2020 to represent my local community I have advocated strongly for this project, and this investment by the Miles Government recognises that Hervey Bay is a fast-growing regional city.
“This is about community safety, building infrastructure, ensuring better services and securing good jobs for our future.’’
Police Minister Mark Ryan said, “Hervey Bay is a growing community and the investment from the government in establishing a new state-of-theart police facility will ensure police are working in a fit-forpurpose facility that can cater for future growth.”

CONSTRUCTION has commenced on a new shelter and picnic area at Dayman Park in Urangan, aiming to boost sun protection for locals and elevating it as an inviting leisure spot.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Zane O’Keefe said the upgrades are forecast to cost $60,000 and are expected to enhance the park’s amenities.
“The old shelter was closed to the community in December 2023 after an inspection identified it as in a state of disrepair,” said Cr Zane O’Keefe.
“Rather than erecting a completely new shelter, we’ve been able to get a replacement
from the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre, which is currently undergoing renovations around the 25m pool area.
“We are now relocating that shelter to Dayman Park making this the most economical choice saving ratepayers money and also the most environmentally conscious option.”
Cr O’Keefe said the existing picnic settings and barbeque will also be replaced as part of the project.
“Dayman Park is a great place to bring people together so it will be great to restore the park to its full potential,” he said.
“Dayman Park has undergone several upgrades in
recent years to make it sun safe and interactive.
“In 2020 Council added some musical instruments to the lower Dayman Park Playground and increased shade as part of a $100,000 makeover.
“In 2022, part of a culturally significant scar tree was incorporated into a sculpture at Dayman Park adding to its cultural significance to the Butchulla people.” Council carpenters and landscapers will deliver the majority of the upgrades. Local companies will also be used for the electrical and concrete work. Works are scheduled for completion by mid to late June.
Applications now open for native plant donations
FRASER Coast community groups and eligible individuals can now apply for plant donations from the Council for environmental projects or events.
Mayor George Seymour said the Fraser Coast Community Nursery donated up to 600 plants a year, depending on the number of applications received.
“The Fraser Coast Community Nursery, located at the northern end of the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens, propagates over 300 different species of local plants,” he said.
“The nursery was originally managed by six volunteers when it was established in 2006, but it is now supervised by a paid full-time team leader and 45 volunteers.
“Applications for native plant donations are sought twice a year, with the latest round open now until 31 May 2024 for plants that will be available for collection in the coming months.
“The type of projects or events supported include community planting events, local species conservation, environmental education initiatives, erosion control, urban lakeside revegetation
and wildlife corridor plantings, among other things.
“Eligible applicants include schools, not-for-profit organisations, incorporated environmental groups, registered Land for Wildlife members, registered Community Environment volunteers and community groups that seek to protect the natural environment within the Fraser Coast.
“Our region has a unique and beautiful natural environment, and initiatives like this help
Council achieve our goal to plant 100,000 trees by 2030.
“It’s all part of Council’s plan to shape a healthy future for the Fraser Coast and create a destination for future generations to come. It’s all about building better communities together.”

NBN upgrade milestone reached in Wide Bay
MORE than 53,000 homes and businesses in the Wide Bay region can now connect to full fibre under a national nbn upgrade program.
What this means is that anybody who may have had issues to do with slower speeds during peak periods,
Unreliability with dropouts and unable to order a speed plan above 50Mbps.
Will likely no longer have these issues (or have them at least significantly reduced) if they upgrade to fibre.
We know that households are using more data than ever. We have seen a tenfold increase in average household data consumption on the nbn network over the past decade, going from 40 GB per month
in 2014 to over 400 GB per month in 2024.
These Fibre upgrades are just one way we are bringing better broadband to regional communities.
Utilising the latest technology, we are enhancing the reach and the speed of the fixed wireless through a $750 million investment. In June (2023) we delivered big improvements for satellite customers with a new nbn satellite plan, which provides access to uncapped data usage for all internet activities and for the first time our 25/5Mbps wholesale plan can offer burst download speeds of up to 100Mbps.
nbn Head of Customer Strategy and Innovation,
Key points:
Dr Robert Joyce, said the upgrades deliver a better, and more reliable internet experience for homes and businesses.
“The average household now has 22 connected devices and that’s growing year on year, we encourage customers to check with their internet provider to see if their plan has enough speed and data inclusions”, he said.
Local Hervey Bay resident, Terry Lynch said, “Since upgrading to nbn fibre we haven’t had any issues at all. I encourage anybody that now has the option to upgrade to do it sooner rather than later. The process was quick and simple and the benefits are very noticeable.”
• In the Wide Bay region more than 53,000 households and businesses that can now benefit from faster and more reliable connections and speeds.
• nbn is aiming to enable access to nbn’s fastest services to more than 10 million premises nationwide; representing about 90 per cent of homes and businesses in the fixed line footprint across Australia by the end of 2025.
• It is simple to order an upgrade. First, head to nbn’s website to check your address for eligibility, then speak to an internet provider and purchase an eligible high speed internet plan (at least 100Mbps) and nbn will work with the internet provider to build fibre right to a customer’s door.

A healthier future for sufferers of back pain
NATIONAL Spinal Health Week (20-26 May 2024), an initiative of the Australian Chiropractors Association (ACA), is dedicated to improving the spinal health of all Australians through increasing awareness of Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) including low back pain.
Hervey Bay residents are among the four-in-every-five Australians who experience back pain at some point in their lives. Dr Andrew Harwood of Harwood Chiropractic who’s a member of the ACA said, “Back pain is usually as a result of an MSD which accounts for the greatest proportion of persistent pain conditions and is the second largest contributor to disability worldwide, with low back pain being the single leading cause of disability globally.
“For about 8 in 10 sufferers experiencing symptoms beyond three months, the pain is often not caused by any particular condition. Known as ‘Chronic Primary Low Back Pain’ (CPLBP) or non-specific low back pain, it’s classified as a non-sinister, non-pathological cause with over 90% of back pain due to CPLBP.
“For people who experience chronic back pain, their ability
to participate in family, social, and work activities is often limited leading to negative impacts on both physical and mental health with significant costs to families, communities and Australia’s economy. If left untreated, back pain can sometimes lead to a chronic pain condition or disability,” said Dr Harwood.
Those most at risk are people who do physical work involving strenuous activities and those who are inactive, spend long hours sitting at work or at home or don’t exercise. Older Australians are also in the high-risk group, particularly those over 65 years as they’re more likely to develop chronic LBP.
“Best practice for treating most back pain starts by avoiding prescribed and overthe counter medications and instead, accessing personcentred, low risk, non-surgical, drug-free therapies that can treat the underlying cause not just the symptoms,” said Dr Harwood.
If you are among the many Hervey Bay residents who suffer from back pain, contact Harwood Chiropractic www. harwoodchiropractic.com.au for holistic healthcare that can help. Or for more information visit www.spinalhealthweek. org.au to help improve your spinal health and overall wellbeing.
Seeking participants for photo Exhibition
FRASER Coast residents
who would like to be involved in a Dementia Awareness Week photographic exhibition are encouraged to express their interest now.
Fraser Coast Regional Council Seniors Liaison Officer Juls de Waard said Dementia Week is scheduled to take place from September 16 to 22, aiming to heighten awareness and foster understanding about dementia.
“Dementia is an umbrella term for more than 150 illnesses, and living with it is not just about losing your memory,” said Ms de Waard.
“As the Fraser Coast’s population leans towards an older demographic, there is a high chance this illness will impact more and more people in our region as it can affect anyone at any age.”
The ‘These Hands’ Photographic exhibition will be held again this year as part of Dementia Awareness Week to showcase locals living with dementia, build awareness about the illness, and create a dementia friendly community.
The exhibition includes photos of the hands of individuals living with dementia and/or the hands of their carers, accompanied
by a storyboard that reminds viewers of the person and what they have achieved.
“Since the inception of this project, local photographer Rowena Allen has generously volunteered her services. Her outstanding work was honored in last year’s Australian Photographic Award, where she received a 4th place recognition,” said Ms de Waard.
“We are now looking for people who would like to be involved in the exhibition for this year.
“If you want to be involved, call Simone on 4191 3000 or email simone.ginman@ozcare. org.au”
Fraser Coast
Alliance will also be holding information sessions during the exhibitions so the community can gain information about support services, the illness and learn how we can create a dementia friendly community.
To assist businesses and other agencies in increasing their Dementia Friendliness the Alliance has created a checklist complete with contacts and resources which is available on the Fraser Coast Regional website at www.frasercoast.qld. gov.au/downloads/file/4112/ dementia-friendly-checklist.

YOUR LOCAL TREATMENT PLANT SPECIALISTS
While not as exciting as picking out paint colours/carpet/fixtures etc – your wastewater system is an important and vital aspect of your new home.
Australia’s land management has progressively been adapting to our environment as our understanding of it increases and we recognize the need to better manage our natural resources and what we take from and return to them.
Increasingly, wastewater, stormwater and rainwater are being seen as recyclable resources rather than as disposal problems. Recycled water use can reduce demand for potable water; thus it can make a potential contribution to easing the water crisis in Australia.
CWWS are encouraging the shift towards a more sustainable future through the installation of home wastewater treatment systems & rainwater tanks.

Charity triathlon raises $20,000 for Youth Mentoring
AN INCREDIBLE $20,000 has been raised for our Youth Mentoring Program, thanks to the efforts and antics of fun-loving triathletes and sponsors.
The UNIQSol Col Pearce Corporate Triathlon, held on Sunday April 28th, saw more than 30 teams hit the water, bike and footpath as they gave the race a go for a good cause.
Not only was the event a resounding success, with organisers Hervey Bay Tri Club delivering a day of fun racing aimed at making the triathlon accessible for athletes of all fitness levels - it also raised muchneeded funds for our valuable Youth Mentoring Program.
HBNC CEO, Tanya Stevenson, thanked the Tri Club for partnering with HBNC on this event for the second year running.
"Community partnerships are so important for the successful delivery
of our programs and services.
Without partners and supporters, we couldn't achieve what we do and support so many community members," Tanya said.
"Thank you to the Tri Club, as well as major sponsor UNIQSol and all the other events partners and sponsors, for making this such a successful event.
"The funds raised for Youth Mentoring will go towards keeping this valuable service available for Hervey Bay school students who are having trouble engaging at school. They are paired with a volunteer mentor who offers advice and support."
This triathlon works a little differently, and the winning team is the one that finishes closest to their predicted finishing time.
This year, the champions were Pavement Plodderscongratulations!
Meanwhile, the winners of Best Dressed Team were Ghostbusters!
A special mention must go to HBNC's own team, Batgirls, with Elizabeth Campbell swimming, Robyn Jacob riding and Rowey Allen running.
Well done to everyone who took part, and thank you again to all those who supported this great event.

Red Shield Appeal 2024 has launched
WITH the need for their services and support greater than ever before, The Salvation Army is launching its 60th Red Shield Appeal in Hervey Bay.
New research has highlighted the depths of the cost-of-living crisis, with 94 per cent of respondents saying they are struggling to afford essentials, such as housing, groceries, medical care, and utilities.
Sixty-three per cent of respondents had skipped meals and 45 per cent had to choose between paying for housing or buying food. Shockingly, the research also found over 1 in 4 (27 per cent) of respondents were forced to consume expired or spoiled food, while 1 in 20 had to eat food from rubbish bins.
A 33-year-old mother who accessed support, said: “I’m having to constantly borrow money off friends due to not being able to buy essentials. I’m having to go days without eating so my kids can eat, cancelling specialist appointments that are a requirement for my health due
to the cost of living.”
The research surveyed 1,500 people around Australia who had reached out to the Salvos Doorways financial relief service over a 12-month period. It showed 61 per cent of respondents could not afford to pay their utility bills on time, more than six times the national average of 10 per cent.
Across Queensland, the Salvos are aiming to raise $5.7 million and $10,000 in Hervey Bay for the Red Shield Appeal, which is now Australia’s largest and longest-running door-knock appeal.
The Salvation Army’s Major Lauriee Arthur said the numbers were frightening.
“In a lucky country like Australia, individuals and families shouldn’t have to make these sorts of decisions, like choosing whether to eat, pay rent or send your kids to the doctor. But these are the people the Salvos help every day as we try to give a new beginning to those struggling in our community,” he said.
The Red Shield Appeal weekend is May 25 and 26, but
there are many volunteering opportunities throughout the month of May – collections in shopping centres or other key locations, online fundraising or organising a collection at your workplace, school, or sporting event.
“Hervey Bay needs your support more than ever. The Salvos are grateful for the generosity we have received over the past 60 years of the Red Shield Appeal, and we hope to see our community come together again this year as we seek to make it another 60 years” Major Arthur said.
All funds raised locally will remain in the local community, allowing the Salvos to meet the specific needs of the most disadvantaged and marginalised members of our region.
To give a new beginning, please donate to The Salvation Army’s 60th Red Shield Appeal by visiting salvationarmy.org.au or calling 13 SALVOS. You can also donate at any Salvos Store.

“Sometimes people just generally want to talk to somebody, they could be new to town, lost a family member or they don’t any friends here. We help put them in contact with other local groups to be able to do so.”
“We have people in their 50’s coming forward who have now
realised that they’ve struggled their whole life with mental health, as a result of childhood trauma”.
“There are many aspects to mental health whether it be family, financial, youth, isolation etc, Fraser Coast Mates is working to try and help cover them all.”
“When someone makes contact with Fraser Coast Mates and we feel and they feel like they need urgent help, we will get them in with a counsellor within 72 hours.”
“Resources can be a challenge here on the Fraser Coast but we have some fantastic organisations onboard.”
“Everything remains private and confidential it’s a vault.”
“Same as if a friend was to reach
out to you personally, they have confidently spoke to you about their circumstances, you should honour that and it remains confidential.”
“Our counselling session are completely free of charge.”
“To help with the cost of covering these sessions we hold events like The Fraser Coast Mates Golf Days, Flourish, Tennis Nights and the Annual Pink Dinner event.”
“Our very first golf day we welcomed approximately 80 guys and together we managed to raise over $15,000.”
“Since then, the event has grown on a massive scale. It now includes Flourish for the women while majority of the men are out playing golf.”
“We have also now branched out into Maryborough with both Golf Days and Flourish happening out there, with great success.”
“Reaching out to us is very straightforward and designed to ensure your enquiries and concerns are addressed promptly and efficiently.”
“The simplest method would be through our website. There you will find a contact form, upon filling out this form it will be sent directly to our team, allowing us to respond to your needs as quickly as possible.”
“Alternatively, for those who prefer social media platforms for communication, sending us a direct message through our Facebook page is equally effective.”
Why the wait?
I HATE waiting to see my doctor. I hate waiting in lines. I hate sitting in traffic.
In a world where instant gratification is increasingly the norm, waiting to see a doctor is frustrating and even can feel unfair.
There are several reasons why waiting for healthcare services is often necessary.
Similarly, you might be in a better position compared to the individual receiving healthcare while you wait.
In Australia, health funding is a finite resource. There are a limited number of doctors, nurses, specialists, administration staff, beds and ambulances available.
This is further exacerbated on the Fraser Coast given our aging population, increased rates of chronic disease and population growth.
With this limited supply of funding, it means that there will inevitably be wait times for appointments, procedures, and surgeries.
It’s simply not feasible to treat everyone simultaneously.
Triage or prioritisation is a term used in healthcare.
To use the emergency department as an example, most departments will have five levels:
• Level 1 – Immediate: life threatening
• Level 2 – Emergency: could become life threatening
• Level 3 – Urgent: not life threatening
• Level 4 – Semi-urgent: not life threatening
• Level 5 – Non-urgent: needs treatment when time permits.
Emergency situations must
take precedence over less critical issues.
This means that patients with non-life-threatening conditions may have to wait longer compared to those with more pressing needs.
Some strategies to implement to minimise you waiting times, includes presenting to the healthcare facility that will best assist your complaint.
If the condition is lifethreatening, present to the emergency department. It is also important to have a regular General Practice that you attend, whilst it may not be your regular doctor, the practice will have your records on file assist you with and not limited to, sprains and strains, bites and stings, infections, minor injuries, chronic disease and preventative care.
Other avenues to seek care include your pharmacist, optometrist and other allied health professionals.
https://www.qld.gov.au/ health/services/emergency/ keep-emergency-foremergencies
As clinicians we are sorry that you need to wait, and we also acknowledge the importance of your time.
Our system remains underfunded and understaffed to care for our aging population.
Despite some of our system challenges, we do to have good health care system compared to many parts of the world.

Volunteers and RSL grant support homeless
Those doing it tough on the streets of Hervey Bay are made to feel just a little bit more comfortable with food in their tummy and shelter over their heads with thanks to the very special Trish Hummerston and Josie Street. Together the duo makes an incredible difference in Hervey Bay through their J&T Supporting Homeless initiative, which is proudly supported by the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program.
The charity has been supported by the club for the past three years with shopping vouchers to the total of $7200 in 2023 and exclusive use of an RSL van to do their food deliveries.
J&T’s financial support was renewed last month with an approval of $1000 worth of Woolworths and Coles vouchers each month being a major sponsorship of $12,000 for the year.
The Fraser Coast community is also very quick to act when the two put a call out for donations on their Facebook page for things like pillows, pillowcases and towels.
Plus, cans and bottles they collect and recycle to purchase more food.

The two deliver the fresh sandwiches and frozen water bottles direct so that the homeless don’t need to leave their belongings. If they do move on, Trish and Josie leave their charity cards in toilets and phone boxes along the Esplanade so the homeless can call and let them know where they have moved to.
“If they are set up with tent, they don’t want to leave it because when they come back it’s likely to have been stolen,” Josie said.
“We know their usual spots where they are camped but if they do move on, they will quite often let us know where they are.
“That’s why the van is so important. The car has been just amazing and has made a huge difference to us.”
Josie and Trish said they are focusing more on food more than ever before with the two seeing a big increase in bigger families needing assistance.
“The increase in shopping vouchers will help us provide extra food because we are seeing so many more young families now more

ERROL Rafter is known for his quirky sense of humour and a deep appreciation for laughter, which he considers an indispensable part of his daily routine.
Born in the laid-back coastal town of Bangalow, just outside of Byron Bay. Errol holds the distinction of being the youngest in a family of six siblings.
The simplicity of life coloured his upbringing, brought up in Byron Bay, Errol spent endless hours fishing off the shores and beaches.
He relished the thrill of the catch.
When he was about twenty, he landed a thirty-four-pound Dew Fish, an impressive catch.
In those days, before the intrusion of computers and mobile phones, life was simple yet rich with adventure, with bike rides until sunset and the building of treehouses built with
youthful enthusiasm.
“The rule was, as long as you were home before the streetlights came on you wouldn’t catch a whipping”, Errol says with a laugh.
His parents also instilled in him values that would shape his character for life – respect for elders, honesty, and integrity.
Errol’s face brightens with excitement as he recalls his first car, a bright yellow HG Holden Sedan affectionately dubbed the “Golden Holden” by all who beheld it.
He also remembers his first job which was at the age of fifteen at the FJ Walker meat works at Byron Bay.
His job entailed cutting up roadkill and removing the hides of cows to salt them.
It was here that he learned about hard work and the satisfaction of earning a living.
Errol Rafter Laughter is the best medicine
Over the decades, he has tried his hand at many different jobs like driving trucks and cleaning in shopping centres.
Some years ago, Errol was working for a large company and suffered a debilitating mental breakdown, grappling with depression and anxiety as he tried to meet deadlines and KPIs.
The breakdown cost him three months of his life.
The warning signs manifested in emotional turmoil and an inability to step beyond his front door, let alone walk to the letterbox.
Hobbies lost their appeal, prompting a visit to the doctor and medication that he continues to this day.
Reflecting on that tumultuous period, Errol once questioned its meaning, but now, he sees it as integral to his journey.
By Kim Parnell from What’s On Fraser CoastHis wife Kerrie’s steadfast presence over the last thirty-five years has been his anchor.
Through this journey, he’s learned the vital lesson of self-care, and he’s proved, not only to himself but to others, the importance of pausing to breathe through life’s relentless demands.
Errol knew that he wanted to draw from his own experiences to help others facing similar struggles.
Together with Kerrie, Errol founded Fraser Coast Time Out, in 2018 they rebranded to Time Out Disability Services and have been going strong ever since connecting with people to achieve meaningful goals and enrich lives.
Errol loves his job and treasures the interaction with participants and clients.
Recently, Errol was diagnosed with
prostate cancer, but luckily the
was caught while in its initial stages. It’s a journey many men his age will eventually face.
“Go and get yourself checked out it only takes twenty minutes and could save your life; early detection is the key”.
At the end of the year, Errol will turn sixty-five and is thinking about retiring.
As he approaches retirement, Errol wants to buy a caravan and looks forward to a new chapter filled with fishing trips and prospecting adventures.
With a trusted management team in place, he feels confident to hand over the reins.
He says he won’t need to worry about the business as he knows it will be in the best hands.

Lisa Curry gives Olympic flame to Fraser Coast Mates
TRIPLE Olympian and wellness entrepreneur Lisa Curry has donated her 2000 Sydney Olympic Torch to a Fraser Coast organisation to raise funds for mental health awareness and suicide prevention initiatives.
Fraser Coast Mates was formed almost eight years ago through the tragic loss of a local popular community identity. The group was formed to provide a better understanding to the community of mental health and provides urgent counselling services for those who take the step to seek help.
Lisa Curry connected with this group in 2022 as a guest speaker and provided continued support with their messaging and promotions since this time.
Her husband, Mark Andrew Tabone, has also supported the group with a number of fundraising nights performing his nationally recognised Legends Showcase featuring his Elvis tribute show.
Lisa says it’s a cause that she sees as a need for more discussion in local communities. “Fraser Coast Mates really resonates with me and I see the need to speak
more openly about how we feel, particularly with men”.
Fraser Coast Mates promotes a great awareness of mental health in the local community and connects with both men and women encouraging more conversations and the courage to speak up if they are concerned how they feel.
One of Australia’s most popular personalities, Lisa has focused her work on unique and powerful message about personal success, overcoming obstacles, discipline, determination, weight loss, regaining your health, and

getting the best out of people. She has personally signed the Olympic torch with a message “Be the best you can be!”.
President for the Fraser Coast Mates, Darren Bosley, says the genuine support from Lisa and Mark has provided great motivation for the committee to continue with their work.
“While this gift from Lisa is an amazing gesture that will provide important funds towards counselling support in the local community, her genuine care for our community and support for mental health awareness is
why we have so much respect for her.”
“She’s a true Australian that understands the meaning of “mates” and we are so lucky to have her as a supporter”.
Lisa Curry carried the torch in the Olympic Torch relay as part of the 2000 Sydney Olympics celebration.
The iconic swimmer competed in three Olympics, two World Championships and three Commonwealth Games, her final appearance representing Australia at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games as a 30 year old mother of two. Her donation to Fraser

Esplanade resort has a plan to showcase environmental excellence, says developer
A WORLD-class resort and residential project proposed for Hervey Bay will be a showcase of sustainable development that will set a new benchmark for the Fraser Coast region, according to the developer.
The planned resort, which if approved will operate as Sheraton Hervey Bay, will feature a raft of best practice environmental measures to ensure the Torquay beachfront project has minimal impact on both the local environment and the surrounding community.
The developer says measures will include the latest in lighting design technology, stormwater management systems, landscaping design and sustainable building methods, while the resort will also play a leading role in educating visitors about the importance of protecting coral reefs and aquatic species.
The project’s environmental credentials will complement the significant economic, employment and community benefits it will bring to the region, attracting new high spending
tourists and helping to ease pressure on the Hervey Bay housing market.
Plans for an Australian-first themed snorkelling and dive facility have also been announced as part of a natural oasis that will form the centrepiece of the resort. The deep dive facility will teach visitors how to snorkel and dive in a realistic reef environment while adopting environmentally conscious behaviours.
Dan Cuda, director of development group Sunny Beach Land, said the Sheraton Hervey
Bay, if approved, would gain global recognition as a destination resort showcasing the very best in sustainable development.
“We have a deep understanding of this region and the beautiful natural attractions that will make it a huge drawcard for international visitors once the Sheraton brand is introduced,” Mr Cuda said.
Tax cuts
“So, it is absolutely in our best interests and those of the whole Fraser Coast community to ensure nothing we do jeopardises the environment they will come to enjoy.
“For that reason, we have also brought in highly respected landscape designer and environmentalist Jamie Durie to advise on the project and assist us with the natural and sustainable elements.”
As part of its Development Application, Sunny Beach Land commissioned a comprehensive expert environmental report on the potential impact of artificial light on sea turtles and shorebirds, covered under the Dark Sky Overlay Code in the Wide Bay Regional Plan.
The study by Emily Krunes, Director and Principal of Trend Environmental, found no recent or historical sea turtle records in the direct vicinity of the development.
Ms Krunes, an ecologist with almost 15 years’ experience, said it was essential to recognise and address the potential environmental impacts associated with a beachfront development, particularly any potential impacts on sea turtles due to artificial light.
“However, it is important to highlight that there needs to be a balance between development and environmental protection,” she said.
“It is possible to have both, with a little innovative design and ensuring rigorous adherence to environmental standards.”
Ms Krunes said a sea turtle environmental impact study had been completed to assess the proposed development against the Dark Sky Overlay Code in the new Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan.
“This study confirmed that impacts on sea turtles can be effectively mitigated with the implementation of best practice light design, in accordance with the National Light Pollution Guideline for Wildlife,” she said.
“This guideline was developed by the Commonwealth Government’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water in consultation with numerous wildlife experts and has been endorsed by the International Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals.
“The Sheraton Hervey Bay developers recognise the importance of protecting our wildlife and are committed to implementing an innovative light design that incorporates advanced LED technology that emits light at wavelengths less disruptive to sea turtles, alongside adaptive lighting controls and strategically directing lights away from the beachfront. These
measures will ensure minimal contribution to artificial skyglow from the development.”
Ms Krunes also stressed that protecting the Great Barrier Reef and its diverse array of species should begin with education.
“By informing locals and tourists about the critical importance and delicate nature of these ecosystems, we empower them to adopt more sustainable practices in their daily lives and inspire them to dedicate themselves to the longterm protection of our coral reefs,” she said.
“One of the most transformative experiences the resort will offer is to teach visitors how to snorkel and dive in a realistic reef environment. This allows them to witness firsthand the stunning beauty of the Great Barrier Reef, an experience that can profoundly shift their perspective and encourage more environmentally conscious behaviours, without the associated impacts of tourists on the reef itself. This will ultimately lead to better conservation outcomes for our reef.”

Do you know how high you can bid?
Property is likely one of the most expensive purchases you will make. It is important to make informed decisions when making an offer - you can look into similar sales in the area, understand the background of the property and neighbourhood and get to know any risks or potential near-future costs. But when you’re deciding how much to offer, it is a good idea to understand how much lenders may be willing to lend you.
To help you on your journey I:
4 Can calculate your borrowing capacity across over 60 lenders.
4 Will be your personal negotiator to find the right loan for you.
4 Can arrange pre-approval to help you bid with confidence.
Not all lenders are the same. They vary in lending criteria, which can impact who will lend to you and the amount they may be willing to lend. For example:
This scenario shows how different lenders might assess the maximum borrowing capacity of a couple with one child, household income of $130,000p.a. – the client’s ability to buy will be influenced by which lender they choose. These figures are an example only, and will change based on the different lenders considered, and the borrower’s personal circumstances.
We always recommend seeking out professional and qualified expertise to assist with individual scenarios. In order to make a recommendation a full assessment would be required. Terms, conditions, fees and charges may apply. Normal lending criteria apply.
