The Humpback whales of Hervey Bay are famous far and near.
And tourists by the thousand come to see ‘em every year.
They’re at their most spectacular when leaping through the air. But it’s still an unsolved mystery just what they’re doing there!
Some people think they’re specially trained to act as tourist bait. While others think they’re showing off ‘n trying to woo a mate! Scientists call them “Big wing whales” and with pectoral fins so wide. They’re just perfectly
Councillors don’t backflip on this, you will lose all semblance of credibility
THERE is a rumour banging around town like a screen door in the wind.
A number of councillors are looking to backflip on their previous strong support for the new $100M+ Community Building and Council Headquarters.
I have written about this project on a number of occasions and remain a staunch advocate for it.
Not only for its obvious need, but also for the real crippling costs of not going ahead, that we will burden later.
Where is the new library going to go? What about the Disaster Coordination Centre and all of the community-use spaces?
The commentary about this being just a Taj
adapted to flutter fly and glide! It doesn’t happen often mind but last time the moon was blue. Old timers say one pod of whales leapt right out the sea and FLEW!
With hoots of joy this family of forty-five ton whales went flapping over Hervey Bay behind two alpha males!
Then flying in formation they began to swerve and jink - Spectators were so stupefied you could hear their eyelids blink! But just as they were nearing the climax of their show, some drongo flashed a photograph – you’d think the galah would know.
That flying whales hate nothing worse and the whole mob gave a sorta snort of
disapproval and dived straight back in the water!
Since then to see a whale in flight’s a sight that’s pretty rare. And only just the lucky few will see them in the air. For though you’ll see them leaping to fall back with a splash. The only thing that stops ‘em flying is those tourist camera’s flash!

Bear in mind that nine out of the eleven elected councillors endorsed this project, except Mayor George Seymour and Cr Paul Truscott. Both have a vested interest in not upsetting the good people of Maryborough. I get it.
There is a full Council meeting on July 26th to review the build and contract award. It’s going to cost more than what was floated in 2021.
agree with your comment; the Council will not listen to reason whatsoever on the building of their Taj Mahal in Main Street, Pialba. All they can see is the monstrosity that will be built there, in the most silliest place, on the corner of Main Street and Torquay Road, not once taking into account the problems it will bring to the so called CBD. Where will the car go as far as parking is concerned? One only has to look at Main Street now and see the difficulty there is in parking there.

If the Council backs out of this deal, the $40M in Federal funding will be lost, and any funding already received and spent by Council will likely have to be repaid back to the Government.

When you take a leadership position, you stick to it.
If councillors change their position on this, they might well find a chorus of calls to have voters change their position on them.

Mr Neve, remember many years ago, when a developer wanted to build a “tower” on the Esplanade over the then three storey limit, and the then council had the decency to put out a referendum for the public to have their say on the matter, and of course the vote was for no. However, once that council was no longer there and the new council was elected, that was overturned and allowed the higher towers to be built.
Why can’t this council have the decency to do the same and allow the public to have their say on the matter?
I still cannot see why they need to move there, the area they are in now is perfectly safe for the public to park, and there is plenty of space for the staff to park their cars out of the way. There is nothing wrong with the building if they want to “modernise” and allow themselves to enjoy the sea views build higher. And look at the cost saving there would be.
Maybe help eliminate some of the 26 million dollar plus debt the Council have got themselves into and expects the public to have to pay for it.

Failed strategies
After highlighting problems and inefficiencies in the Aged Care sector and promising to provide many improvements, homes were shut down before the improvements could be made available.
Displaced residents are now faced with finding alternative living quarters, while less are available.
It’s a bit like the renewable energy story. They are shutting down reliable base load coal fired power stations…blowing them up, before the projected renewable replacements are built and operational.
Inconvenienced people… that will be all of us, will be highly frustrated without the reliable power we have been so accustomed to for so long.
How many more trial and error schemes will fail before Labor realises they can’t shut down facilities before having something to seamlessly replace them?

I was wrong, I laid the blame
on the Fraser Coast Regional Council for financing the Pulgul/Moolyyir St road works out of ratepayers money. I should have done my homework better, as your article states it was funded by the federal government and now a waste of tax payers money. The terrible design must have been included in the application for the govt grant, and as for being a black spot, I could think of much worse places.

As ratepayers and artists, the Hervey Bay Art Society have been running a yearly Art Competition and Show for local and interstate artists for 30 years. The Art show and competition has always been
sponsored by the community. We organized the competition in the new Regional Gallery when it opened. The opening event was one of the bigger events in Hervey Bay. People came and filled the show area and spilled out on the deck.
We are very upset that our Society has been rejected by the Regional Gallery and we have had to move the competition to another town, Maryborough. We need support, not rejection

The obvious beneficiary of our energy policies is China. They make our solar panels, wind turbines, steel, electric cars, & many other items, using slave labor, our coal, gas & iron ore.
The more restrictions we place on our own industries; disincentives to mining, and the much more expensive power for the entire country, the far greater is the benefit to China.
There is no reduction of emissions for the planet.
Those emissions are simply produced by China instead of Australia.
Why are we being conned onto this self-destructive path?

Boundary Road Extension Progresses
A section of Denmans Camp Road near the intersection with Boundary Road will be limited to oneway traffic for up to a year while a major new east-west road connection through Hervey Bay is completed. Road and drainage works in Boundary Road between Maree Street and Denmans Camp Road will continue
until November this year, weather and construction conditions permitting.
Construction works in Denmans Camp Road will start in July and continue to mid-2024 when the entire project is due to be completed.
This will mean various changes to traffic conditions, including detours and oneway arrangements on roads such as Denmans Camp Road and Maree Street. We
urge motorists to be patient and follow the traffic control advice while this important work to deliver a major new road connection in Hervey Bay is underway.
The final asphalt seal at the Grevillea Street and Boundary Road intersection will occur during the June/ July 2023 school holidays, requiring a full road closure of this area for five days. Further details can be found on the Council website.

State budget 2023 – Cost of living help for Hervey Bay
The 2023 State budget has once again delivered for the people of the Hervey Bay electorate.

Adrian Tantari said, “we know that cost of living is impacting every family across Queensland, and this is no different for the people of the Hervey Bay.
“The Palaszczuk Government promised to ease cost of living and this Budget delivers that.
“Addressing everyday costs is what this budget has done.
“Included in this budget are several relief subsidies and rebates that will have a real impact on home budgets.
Electricity Rebate for all.
“As a part of this Budget, every Hervey Bay household, will receive an electricity rebate totalling at least $550.
“This rebate will be split evenly over the four quarters next financial year.

• Swimsmart Vouchers - A two year expansion of the FairPlay scheme to provide up to $150 for eligible children aged up to 4 years old to learn to swim.

New funds for schools
STUDENTS across Fraser Coast are on their way to becoming the next generation of environmental champions with new funds from the 2023 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program.
They join more than 1,100 schools and early learning centres across Australia who will be awarded grants to help build and develop handson environmental learning projects.
Schools in the Fraser Coast who will be awarded a grant of up to $1,000 include Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School.
Over the years, thousands of schools have used these grants to create interactive projects focused on sustainability and have inspired students to play an active role in the future of their natural environment.
This year, the program also officially included First Nations perspectives projects for the first time. Woolworths and Landcare Australia are excited to award more than 320 grants as part of this year’s funding to projects that focus on expanding students’ First Nations education and deepening their connection to Country.
Woolworths Fraser Coast Group Manager, Everett McMillan, said: “Bringing the classroom to the great outdoors and encouraging
kids to get hands-on with nature is always something we’re excited to see, and we hope all of the schools across Fraser Coast will have fun working on their new projects.”
With their projects up and running, Junior Landcare’s online Learning Centre, supported by Woolworths, offers a range of free online resources to help students of all ages build their knowledge of biodiversity, sustainable food production, waste management and more.
Landcare Australia CEO, Dr Shane Norrish, said:
“For over 25 years Junior Landcare has recognised the vital role children and young people play in caring for the environment. Thanks to the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants, and the Woolworthssupported Junior Landcare Learning Centre, young people have an opportunity
to experience hands-on learning with environmental education.”
Proud Wiradjuri man and First Nations educator for Junior Landcare, Adam Shipp said: “The knowledge from our Elders and ancestors that have come before us is extremely important to capture and keep alive. Our lands will be much healthier in doing so, and so I am delighted that a number of Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants will be funding First Nations perspectives projects this year.”
To date, Woolworths has contributed over $5 million to more than 4,900 Junior Landcare projects across Australia and reaching more than 400,000 kids.

The future is bright for our very own nuclear scientist
WHEN Giorgia Kilpatrick graduated from Xavier Catholic College and headed off to UQ for her future education, she had no idea that her zest for life and focus on taking every opportunity that came her way would lead her into the nuclear workforce.
Back in Hervey Bay to present to Xavier Catholic College students as a part of Careers Week, Giorgia shared her experiences around her two-year graduate program with ANSTO.
After studying a Bachelor of Science (Majoring in Microbiology) with a Bachelor of Arts, she was excited to understand what a day in the life of a nuclear scientist looked like.
“I’m based at Lucas Heights now with ANSTO, which is short for Australia's Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation,” Giorgia said.
“ANSTO operates much of Australia’s landmark infrastructure including one of the world’s most modern nuclear research reactors.”
“It is incredibly exciting to be part of early career pipelines that will support the Australian Government with developing a nuclear workforce of the future.”

“When I was at school, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do, but I knew I wanted to head to university and see where that took me. It’s important to keep your options open and when you do, you have no idea what amazing opportunities can come your way.”
With her work at ANSTO, Giorgia will have exposure to research that will improve the health of Australians by supporting access to current and future nuclear technologies
and innovative treatments for current and emerging diseases.
“There is a commitment to train early career researchers from Australia and overseas in the application of nuclear techniques to study environmental systems, as well as develop new research tools and products. That’s very exciting for future generations.”
Fifteen years ago, Giorgia and her family undertook an amazing holiday to all parts of Australia, but it was Hervey Bay that attracted her parents to make a move north.
“Hervey Bay still feels like home to me, but I have been given the privilege to join the two-year graduate program with ANSTO. The future is bright.”

“That is a fantastic effort, and I congratulate dog owners for their efforts to register their pets.
“There was a spike in pet ownership during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially as we faced lockdowns and our movements were restricted.
“It is great to see that people who bought or adopted pets are taking up the responsible pet ownership mantle and ensuring their companions are registered and microchipped.”
To ensure that the Council’s records are up to date, the annual dog registration inspection program will run through to the end of September.
The inspection program will start with the owners who still need to return their paperwork.
Council staff conducting the
inspections will visit homes across the region between 7am and 5pm Monday to Saturday.
So far, during the program:
• 1,533 owners registered their dogs for the first time;
• 425 owners renewed their registrations;
• 318 animals have been removed from the register, and;
• 271 fines issued (52 for
applied for more.
Cr O’Keefe said registering animals had benefits for owners.
“If an animal is found wandering or is taken to the pound, registered dogs can be reunited with their owners very quickly,” he said.
“It is harder to reunite dogs with their owners when they are unregistered or not microchipped, or the information on the microchip is outdated.
“It is essential those details are kept up to date with Council and the group which holds your pet’s microchip data.
Dog registration fees help pay for animal management, training programs and provide for improved access to dogfriendly open spaces.”
Owners found with an unregistered dog are liable for the $287 fine.

The Hervey Bay Regional Gallery is packed with art and memorabilia celebrating the history of the State of Origin rugby league series as a part of a special new art exhibition which opened on Friday, 9 June.
Inspired by Queensland’s passion for the greatest sporting rivalry of all time, Origin Story brings together artists from across the Fraser Coast to reflect on the cultural contribution of the State of Origin to Queensland’s identity.
Deputy Mayor Denis Chapman said he was thrilled to see such a diverse offering in the gallery.
“There’s modern art, a decked-out commodore, historical photos as well the original State of Origin Cup from 1945 on display, thanks to the Army Museum South Queensland,” he said.
“This is the ultimate exhibition for sport, history and art lovers, celebrating the significance of rugby league within the Fraser Coast community.
“Council is keen to ensure the community has opportunities to appreciate arts, heritage
and cultural diversity, and this is certainly one of the more unique exhibitions to be displayed at our gallery.”
Curated by the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery’s Llewellyn Millhouse, the show features commissioned artworks from Joel Barney, Shane Jacob, Ashley Nixon, Phillip Piperides, Phoebe Paradise, Jack Rodgers, Teho Ropeyarn, Erika Scott and David Spooner.

The other new exhibition opening at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery this month is Gordon Hookey: A MURRIALITY, which presents perspectives on historical and contemporary issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through sculpture, printmaking, video and large-scale painting.
The exhibitions are on display from 9 June to 27 August 2023 at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery. The gallery is located at 166 Old Maryborough Road in Pialba and is open Tuesdays to Fridays from 10am to 4pm and on weekends from 10am to 2pm. Entry is free.

Serving up new sponsorship for tennis tournaments
AFTER a bumper three years of incredible tennis, the Fraser Coast Regional Council has renewed their sponsorship agreement with the Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association for another three years.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the sponsorship agreement for three events a year including the Seniors Tournament held on 16 – 18 June would draw almost 1000 participants and spectators.
“This three-day event is popular with both locals and visitors. About 170 people from outside the Fraser Coast are expected to travel here for this event, which is a huge economic boost for the region,” he said.
“As a result, the Fraser Coast
benefits from the increase in visitors who support our accommodation facilities, cafes, restaurants and other businesses. The region also benefits from the exposure to a wider audience.”
This Sponsorship also includes the Open Tournament being held 14 – 16 July and the Junior Classic 20 – 22 September. In total these events will host around 400 participants and 500 spectators.
The sponsorship deal is part of a Council focus on bringing events, athletes and artists to the region, and create connected communities through our places, spaces and people.
“We want to provide
opportunities for locals to be involved in the sporting and cultural activities that people in capital cities take for granted,” Cr Seymour said.
“Seeing people perform at the elite level inspires others. The events also contribute to our region’s cultural, social and economic development.”
Under the sponsorship deal, Council provided $3,000 to the tennis association to stage the tournament for three years (2023, 2024 and 2025).
Being able to stage events, especially national ranking events, is fantastic, Association President Geoff Arnell said.
“The events will bring elite players of all ages to the region to compete,” he said.

Our own Ethan Parry takes on the world
THE SIXTH edition of the Virtus Global Games took place in Vichy-France recently, and our own Ethan Parry featured in the largest sports program ever for that organisation.
Virtus is the brand name of the International Sports Federation for athletes with intellectual impairment and is a founding member of the International Paralympic Committee.
“It was an amazing experience to head over to France and compete,” Ethan said.
Thousands of athletes from Europe, America, Asia, Africa, and Oceania performed across ten main sports and is the highest level of competition anywhere in the world for athletes with an intellectual disability.
This is the second time Ethan has competed at the Virtus Global Games, having been involved in the original
Brisbane Games in 2019.
Ethan competed in the 100m, 200m, long jump and the tri-event, which also included shot put.
He was awarded the bronze medal in the long jump, as well as fifth in the tri-event. If not for a foul in the long-jump of the tri-event, he could have placed silver or bronze.
Before Ethan headed off overseas, the community spirit of Hervey Bay was on display with a fundraiser for his event travel and expenses.
“The cost for Ethan to travel to the Virtus Global Games was over $8,000, and the community really supported Ethan to get there,” Ethan’s mum Gail said.
“Presently there is no funded pathway for athletes with a disability like Ethan’s to get to the Paralympics, which would unlock Athletics Australia funding for him to train and compete around Australia and across the world.”
“We are hoping that will change as the Brisbane 2032 games approaches and Virtus are pushing for the inclusion of II2, the classification that Ethan competes under.”
Ethan only started his athletic journey in 2019 and has immediately made a huge impact, competing against fellow athletes well into their thirties.
He trains up to eight times a week here in Hervey Bay at the athletics fields, at Snap Fitness and Allied Fitness.
“Ethan is only a second away from placing in the 100m and 200m events. He is really striving to improve.”
“Being accepted and included is really important to Ethan, and he has thrived and grown so much as a person since starting his athletic career.”
“He has found a place where he is happy. He loves athletics, training and competing.”

Baycrest resident’s 100 years of memorable moments
FROM mistakenly signing up to become a nurse and being caught in a rowboat in an ocean whirlpool to experiencing Cyclone Tracy in 1974 – it’s safe to say Bolton Clarke Baycrest resident Dorothy Gardner’s century has been anything but dull.
“I’d wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl, so I signed up when I was 18 and went to the Lister Hospital in Mackay,” Dorothy said.
“Up until then the third operation I saw I was quite good, but this time the doctor was operating on a stomach. I thought ‘I’m starting to feel sick’ so I got myself out of there and I decided I didn’t want to be a nurse and changed my mind completely!”
After changing her career path, raising her four children and caring for her husband Edward for many years, Dorothy made the move to Darwin on her own.
“When I was widowed, the government sent me to relearn office work and that’s what I did until I was 60 and started travelling on my own.
The night Cyclone Tracy hit, Dorothy was in her studio apartment, which was three floors up, taking shelter under her mattress.
“When daylight came, there were no walls, no ceiling, I had been blown metres across my apartment into the kitchen and the mattress had blown away!”
She managed to get out of Darwin and travel down to

Brisbane in a cargo plane the following week.
Dorothy eventually followed one of her daughters to Hervey Bay where she now resides at Baycrest Retirement Village with family all over Australia to keep up with including six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and three great, great grandchildren.
“I didn’t think I would be here for this long – I have been here for six years now.
“I am so happy here because I can do what I want, when I want,” she said.
Dorothy’s 100th birthday was marked with a tree planting ceremony with the Fraser Coast Council and an afternoon tea with her family and friends.
THE 16TH of June this year was an ordinary Friday for many in Hervey Bay, yet one resident celebrated a milestone that very few achieve.
Alan Henry Williams celebrated a hundred years on our precious planet that he celebrated in style in Hervey Bay with family and friends travelling from as far as Amsterdam and Bali.
The day was also significant as he was joined by his wife Joan, enjoying over 78 years of marriage.
Alan recalls in 1944 saying to Joan mere weeks before he was shipped off to New Guinea during World War 2,
“We have only known each other for nine months, but if we don’t get married now, we will probably never see each other ever again.”
The centenary milestone was enjoyed with a three course luncheon at The Boat Club, followed by a tree planting ceremony the next day at the Botanical Gardens with his two sons, Geoffrey and Gary. Alan has had a lifetime love of fishing that extends to oystering, crabbing and all things to do with the sea. He built by hand in the garage under his house a marine ply speed boat with his sons and a tribe of friends learning how to water ski behind.
Alan and Joan share a love of amateur theatre, founding the Ballina Players in the 1950s which they oversaw the building of the Players own theatre that is still thriving today. He also is a Life Member of the Ballina Golf Club as a past President. We asked Alan what the secret is to living so long.
“All of the above, but especially fishing and home brew,” said Alan. He has spent all his adult life striving to perfect the art of the home brew.

ANDREW Sadler is wellknown around Hervey Bay, renowned for his great coffee, warm heart, and delightful sense of humour. I have had the pleasure of knowing Andrew for several years, and we have shared countless laughs together. Born nearly sixty years ago in Wellington, New Zealand, Andrew fondly refers to himself as a “South Sea pom” and a Hurricanes boy.
Reflecting on his upbringing, Andrew shares, “I grew up with a single mother. It was a tough life but a good life. I had everything I needed and attended excellent schools.” Andrew’s mother, a professor
of English, instilled in him the value of money and emphasized the importance of good manners—a quality he believes is lacking in many children today. Andrew is also very close to his father and spent school holidays with him, accumulating more frequent flyer points than most kids ever dreamed of.
As a child, Andrew was driven by his passion for sports and immersed himself in a variety of disciplines, from rugby union to volleyball and athletics. However, when it came to choosing a career path, Andrew initially lacked a clear direction. He ended up becoming an apprentice chef
and pursued his studies to become fully qualified. Andrew went on to serve as a head chef at various establishments but, over time, grew bored.
In 1987, Andrew moved to Australia and ended up working alongside a friend to establish pubs in Brisbane.
Since then, Andrew has had just about every role within the hospitality industry, with one of his least enjoyable experiences being a bouncer at a nightclub. Wearing the uniform seemed to attract drunk troublemakers eager to pick a fight.
A little-known fact about Andrew is the fact that he used to scuba dive. One day while diving, he collided head-on

with a shark as he emerged from a narrow rock hole. Both the shark and Andrew were equally startled. A moment he will never forget.
The worst thing that Andrew has experienced was losing his mother to cancer. Witnessing her decline and being unable to protect her was incredibly difficult. It took time to recover from the emotional impact, and work served as a temporary distraction. Nights were particularly challenging as they allowed for reflection.

Andrew eventually trained as a barista under the tutelage of a close friend, a former Australian second-place Barista Champion. He spent countless hours practising the art of loading shots and preparing milk and honed his technique while working in catering and cafes. Eventually, he and a friend opened a small café in Sydney, where they were brewing and serving an impressive 60 to 80 kilograms of coffee per week.
Nearly nine years ago, Andrew made the decision
to move to Hervey Bay after having visited the area for the past three decades. After trying a few coffee shops, he decided there and then to open his own coffee shop here where he could create a haven for coffee enthusiasts. FX of Coffee was born. His first full-time employee, Lavina, remains an integral part of his team to this day.
Andrew and Lavina have a devoted following of customers whom they have come to know as ‘family.’ They both look forward to welcoming them all back when they open at their new location on Fraser St in early July.
