I would like to congratulate the Queensland Health Service for the way they maintain the lift in the Cancer Care building NOT.
This lift has been out of order at least five times in the last six months and this has caused people with enough problems to stress even more.
People have been trapped in the said lift and needed to be rescued by emergency services and this adds to their trauma.
I would like to say that this is no way an attack on the staff

Youth crime, and crime in general, is a highly contentious topic in our community right now. Incidents of hooning, break-ins, theft, vandalism and even more tragic outcomes are becoming all too common.

However, it is difficult to comprehend the negativity directed at the dedicated men and women who serve in the blue uniform.
We must remember that they are not the lawmakers, and I am confident they too feel disillusioned by the situations they often face.

Our Hervey Bay officers are ordinary mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters—with families of their own.
Their job requires them to confront abnormal and often dangerous situations during every shift and then seamlessly transition back to their everyday lives.
These officers frequently face attacks from those they are trying to help, threats from individuals intent on causing harm, verbal abuse and even being spat on, all while witnessing unspeakable tragedies.

This lack of diversity and innovation is disheartening.

It would be wonderful to see more live music venues, late-night cafes, clubs, and other entertainment spots where people of all ages can unwind and enjoy themselves after dark.
A thriving nightlife scene could provide opportunities for local artists and musicians, create jobs, and foster a greater sense of community. Moreover, it would make Hervey Bay an even more appealing destination for tourists looking for a complete holiday experience.
I hope that local businesses and community leaders can come together to explore ways to enrich our nightlife.
With a bit of creativity and investment, Hervey Bay could offer something for everyone, day and night.

STATE Government Development and Infrastructure Minister Grace Grace recently announced that work would soon begin on a new master plan for Urangan Harbour. This plan aims to provide a blueprint to guide decision-making, development, and investment to support a sustainable maritime industry.
Minister Grace recognised Urangan Harbour as a strategic maritime asset and a gateway to the Great Sandy Marine Park and K’gari (Fraser Island) World Heritage Area.
She stated that the planning process would officially begin in mid-2024, with public consultations expected in early 2025 and the final master plan document anticipated by late 2025.
The master plan will outline future land use intentions and redevelopment opportunities, ensuring the Harbour’s role in the region’s economic growth.
The process will incorporate community and stakeholder feedback, high-level technical investigations, background research, and the latest Recreational Boating Demand Forecasting.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads, which owns Urangan Harbour, will partner with Economic Development
Queensland to deliver a master plan that also considers the broader harbour precinct.
This initiative is highlighted in the Wide Bay Burnett Regional Plan as a key contributor to tourism and economic development in the Fraser Coast region.
Minister Grace emphasised Urangan Harbour’s significance as a key tourism and maritime destination, with the potential to become a central hub within the Fraser Coast region’s tourism sector.
She noted the underutilised land around the harbour and the potential for economic redevelopment, particularly leveraging Hervey Bay’s status as a Whale Heritage Site.
“The strategic master planning of Urangan Harbour will be the first step towards its revitalisation,” said Grace.
“It will attract new investment in residential and commercial land uses, further developing Urangan Harbour’s role as the region’s home for whale watching, boating enthusiasts, and recreational fishers.”

Adrian Tantari emphasised the harbour’s critical role in tourism as the gateway to Hervey Bay’s Whale Heritage Site.
He highlighted the importance of providing all-tide deep-water access to recreational boaties from far and wide.

NICKNAMED the ‘humpback highway,’ Hervey Bay’s annual migration of humpback whales is a spectacular sight, showcasing the remarkable recovery of a once-threatened species. Beyond the breathtaking breaches, there’s much more happening beneath the surface.
Dr Owen Coffee, Strandings Coordinator for Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service, highlighted the significance of this migration saying the first whales should be seen soon as they embark on their annual journey into warmer waters.
The whales spend months in the cold southern waters to fatten up before heading north to breed and birth in warmer waters.
“When hunting stopped in the sixties, the humpback population was around 500. It has now increased to over 30,000,” Dr Coffee noted.
This incredible conservation success story draws thousands of visitors to Hervey Bay for whale-watching tours each year.
“Seeing whales breaching from a tour boat or the beach is an exhilarating moment that can leave people breathless,” he added.
Boaties in Hervey Bay share the waters with these 40-tonne mammals during migration. Whales can surface unexpectedly or even nudge boats out of curiosity, making it essential for boaties to remain vigilant.
Observing approach limits and understanding that whales are on the move at all times, even at night, can help reduce risks.
In addition to humpbacks, our waters are home to a variety of other whale and dolphin species. From January 2021 to December 2023, strandings for 15 different species were recorded along the Queensland coast. While humpbacks are the
most famous, other species like sperm whales, false killer whales, pilot whales, Bryde’s whales, and minke whales also navigate the Queensland waters. Tragically, strandings sometimes occur, such as the 2013 stranding of a pod of killer whales near Wide Bay.
“During the annual migration, keep a lookout for whales and observe approach and speed limits,” Dr. Coffee advised.

NAVIGATING footpaths in Hervey Bay and Maryborough is set to become easier for pedestrians with disabilities, parents with prams, and elderly citizens, thanks to the introduction of new mobility maps.
Fraser Coast Regional Council has engaged with Briometrix to undertake a comprehensive “mapping” process.
This project involves a survey team, including trained Wheelchair Users (pilots), utilising innovative technology to gather data on footpath conditions, accessibility to public transport, parking, and amenities.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said these new mobility maps will help our most vulnerable to find the best footpath, shared pathway, or trail, giving those with limited mobility the confidence to take a journey that they might not previously have done.
“The project surveys approximately 95km of footpaths and assesses access to more than 500 locations including bus stops, toilets, parking bays, clubs, tourist attractions, retail centres, food outlets, accommodation providers and entrances to council facilities,” said Cr
Seymour.
“Paul Crawford, a local resident of Fraser Coast who uses a wheelchair, has undertaken the mapping of paths in Hervey Bay and Maryborough, aiming to help improve accessibility.
“In Hervey Bay, mapping included areas such as the Boat Harbour Marina, coastal walking paths along the Esplanade to Point Vernon, paths to the shopping precinct on Main Street and further along as far as Eli Waters Shopping Centre.
“This key information is then used to create an online “Mobility Map” that will soon be accessible to the community, helping people to plan safe outings using our pathways.
“This project has become a nationally recognised award-winning project on the Sunshine Coast, and we look forward to the same success on the Fraser Coast.”

FRASER Coast’s creative community is invited to participate in the inaugural Hervey Bay Film Festival.
This event aims to showcase local and international talent and encourage community involvement in the arts.
The festival will feature movie screenings on Thursday, September 12, from 5-8 pm at Bigscreen Cinemas.
The festival will culminate in an awards evening on Saturday, September 21, in the Fraser Room at the Boat Club.
The film festival is calling for entries in various categories, including feature fiction, feature documentary, series (single or multiple episodes), and short films made in Australia and internationally.
Filmmakers, screenwriters, and photographers are encouraged to submit their work. Submission fees are $15 per student and $20 for nonstudents, with a deadline of September 6.
Festival Director Nigel Squires stated, “We want to support and promote locallymade films, pilots, and trailers to encourage investment towards full production and distribution.”

SKATERS, scooter and BMX riders will soon be able to test their skills on a new pump track being built in Hervey Bay.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said works for Hervey Bay’s first pump track are underway on vacant Councilowned land in Pialba between the PCYC and Council’s Library on Old Maryborough Road.
“A pump track is a circuit of rollers, banked turns and jumps designed to be ridden by generating momentum through up and down movements instead of pedalling and pushing,” he said.
“Pump tracks are becoming popular recreational facilities across the country. Our Maryborough pump track opened last year with great interest, so it will be exciting to see this new facility come to life in Hervey Bay.
“The new track will cater for beginners, intermediate, and experienced users. The section for juniors and beginners provides a simpler, slower rider flow, whereas the more advanced sections have corners, jumps, and other challenging features.”
The works include the construction of a new asphalt BMX pump track, associated earthworks, electrical works,
including lighting and CCTV security and basic landscaping.
The pump track is expected to be completed and open to the public by July.

Adrian Tantari said the Miles Government had provided a $1.3 million grant to Council through the Works for Queensland program to design and build pump tracks in Hervey Bay and Maryborough.
Cr Seymour thanked the Queensland Government for providing funding for Hervey Bay’s first pump track and thanked local residents for having their say on the design of the new track.
“The planning process
identified this previously under-utilised park as the best site for this facility as it’s located between the University of Sunshine Coast, the Council Library, Condy Park Kindergarten, Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), and the Mary to Bay Rail Trail.
“Part of the park will still be available for events and there is still room for the University of Sunshine Coast to expand.
The tender for the Hervey Bay pump track was awarded to local company JAC Civil Pty Ltd, which also assisted in delivering the Maryborough pump track last year. Council also opened a smaller pump track at Tiaro last year.

From 10am to 4pm, Bellert Park on Steley St in Howard will transform into the mystical market full of hard to get supplies, quirky gifts and a market event with a twist.
Organiser Wayne PinaRoozemond (also known by his Pagan name Sargolais) said, “It’s difficult for a witch to buy supplies at Coles and the powdered newt sells out fast in the witches aisle at Woollies; that’s why we’ve created our own Witches Market!”
The market will feature stalls
offering handmade natural products, knife and sword work, gothic fashion, jewellery, crystals, candles, healing balms, runes, cards, wands, altar products, tarot readers and spirituality and selfdevelopment course information to name a few.
Stallholders are travelling from as far as northern NSW and from past Bundaberg.
The day is more than a market day; it’s an event and experience that Mr Pina-Roozemond that has become an annual fixture for the Fraser Coast calendar.

THE ANNUAL River Heads Rocks event, a boutique music and camping weekend set in the scenic Fraser Coast RV Park is set to take place from 19th to 21st July.

SEVEN high schools across the Wide Bay region gathered at the Hervey Bay PCYC to compete in May’s annual Science & Engineering Challenge.
The event, designed to encourage students to pursue studies in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), brought together young minds eager to showcase their skills and ingenuity.
Run by the University of Newcastle, this national event sees participation from schools all over Australia.
For the Wide Bay challenge, the University of the Sunshine Coast played a crucial role in coordinating the schools, while the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City handled the venue, catering, sponsorship, and volunteer coordination.
Volunteers from Rotary Clubs of Hervey Bay Sunrise, Maryborough Sunrise, Maryborough City, Downer EDI Rail, Hard Yakka – Susan River, and the Howard RSL were instrumental in making the event a success.

THE LIVEWELL Hervey Bay podcast recently sat down with Kirsti Kee, a volunteering retiree of the Fraser Coast.
The focus of this podcast was to explore the latter part of working life and transitioning into retirement but continuing to remain connected in the community.
Kirsti concluded her teaching career and entered retirement approximately 12 years ago. Since then, she has made a significant transition into community service, dedicating her time and skills to various volunteering opportunities. Her commitment to helping others has allowed Kirsti to remain actively engaged in the community, bringing valuable experience from her years as an educator to her new role as a volunteer.
“I wanted to give back to the community and link up with key groups that align with my interests of education and social interaction,” said Kirsti.
“Therefore, I moved straight from the working world into the world of volunteer.”
“Currently I am actively involved with the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, Rotary Hervey Bay Sunrise and the Chairperson at Fraser Coast Anglican College.”
“The important thing to understand is what you want to give back to. Sometimes volunteering within the community in the field you know makes it feel comfortable and safe.”
“But on the other hand I think retirement can give you the
opportunity to find something different and the time to try something new.”
“We need to put strategies in place to make sure we don’t fall into the trap of isolation.”
“There is a misconception that when we retire, we are going to have a life where we walk on the beach, play with the dog, read a book etc.”
“Truth is, you can only do so much of that.”
“We need human contact and interaction with other people.”
“Find things you like doing. If you’re a couple do things together but you also need to find things you enjoy doing outside of that.”

THE CONSTRUCTION
of the Hervey Bay City Centre community hub, a key project of the Hinkler Regional Deal, has advanced with the start of excavation for the basement car park.
This $108.7 million initiative, supported by $40 million from the Australian Government and additional funds from Fraser Coast Regional Council, is progressing well under the guidance of national construction firm Hansen Yuncken.
Hansen Yuncken has engaged twelve local businesses, with the latest contracts awarded to Wide Bay Scaffolding, Meales Wide Bay Concrete Pumping, Wide Bay Crane Hire, and Neumann Steel. These new engagements, valued at over $3 million, complement previous local contracts worth over $12 million, providing a significant economic boost to the Fraser Coast region.
Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, Kristy McBain, emphasised the project's impact, stating, “Regional communities deserve high-quality community infrastructure and multipurpose spaces that can bring them together, which is why we’re partnering with Fraser
Coast Regional Council and injecting $40 million towards this transformative project. This hub will have a huge impact in Hervey Bay – and it’s fantastic to see local contractors front and centre of this work.”
The hub, located at Main Street and Torquay Road in Pialba, will feature a Disaster Resilience Centre, a two-level expanded library, a public plaza, and flexible meeting and event spaces. More than 75% of the development will be community space, serving as a central point for learning, social interaction, and accessing council services.
The project, including the creation of foundation and basement wall piles, is currently focused on excavating
the basement car park, which will provide 68 spaces. Additionally, the council is extending nearby parking and exploring more on-street parking options. Completion is slated for mid-2026.
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Denis Chapman encouraged local business involvement, stating, “This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform the city centre, create jobs and drive business investment.

LOCAL Hervey Bay GP Dr Nick Yim has been elected as President of AMA Queensland in a major win for our region.
With an ethos of service above all and a calling to make a difference on a broader scale, Dr Yim has been Vice President and Chair of the Council for the past two years.
Well known throughout the Hervey Bay community, Dr Yim is passionate about all facets of medical care for not only his patients but all patients throughout Queensland. Brisbane born and bred, Dr Yim trained and worked as a pharmacist before entering medicine.
He knows that healthcare is of vital importance to all members of the community, from preventative care to the ability to see your GP on a regular basis if you need it, all the way through to hospital safety, ambulance ramping, the best use of government funds and Medicare reform.

“Serving as Vice President for the past two years has been an immense privilege, allowing me to advocate for both patients and the profession,” Dr Yim said.
“Our community is confronting numerous challenges, including escalating clinical workloads, an aging population, and the ongoing rising cost of living. To address these issues, it is crucial to ensure proper access to specialist services.
“This will enable our patients to receive the necessary care within their local area when they need it most. By prioritising the availability of these services, we can better support the health and well-being of our community.
“Our goal must always be to provide timely, high-quality care that meets the diverse needs of our residents, ensuring they do not have to travel far for essential medical attention.”
Dr Yim will be speaking to the key policy makers at every level of government, lobbying for the right channelling of funds.
“There is a misconception that health in Queensland is a State Government issue, but it is actually all levels of government. From a local government perspective here in Hervey Bay, we can offer preventive health programs, more exercise parks and so on. Local government can also advocate to the State for additional funding.”
“We all know that the State Government is responsible for public health and hospitals. There is always a lot of talk in the media about ambulance ramping, but ramping is a symptom of limited flow through the healthcare system.”
AMA Queensland will closely examine the next state budget and will scrutinise the promises and policies of both political parties in the upcoming months.
“In Australia, we unfortunately tend to have the healthcare system a little backwards.”
“The most expensive portion of healthcare is hospital-based care. Whether it be treating patients for major surgery, cancer, chronic disease, palliative care, the costs are very high and very labour intensive.”
“However, if we can keep people well, they don’t need to access those services. This is where the Federal Government needs to invest in an appropriate primary health care system, they are not doing that, in fact the funding is getting less and less.”
Attracting more doctors into general practice, to live and work in regions like Hervey Bay, will also be a major focus for Dr Yim.
“Growing regional cities and towns require more doctors to meet the healthcare demands of their expanding populations. Attracting doctors to these areas ensures residents can access timely and convenient medical care. To achieve this, the government must implement incentive programs that make relocating to regional communities more appealing for doctors.”
“These programs could include financial incentives, housing assistance, and professional development opportunities.”
“By making it easier for doctors to move to and settle in these regions, the government can improve healthcare access, enhance community health outcomes, and support the sustainable growth of regional cities and towns.”
“I will be doing everything I can, to move the dial for all people in Queensland, when it comes to healthcare.”

THANKS to a People of Post grant, the generosity of the community and the efforts of Hope in a Suitcase, children entering foster care on the Fraser Coast will continue to receive a warm welcome to their new journey in life.
Hope in a Suitcase received a grant of $2000 which they will use to purchase suitcases and duffle bags for children entering foster care; many of whom are experiencing mental wellbeing challenges.
Australia Post has awarded grants to more than 150 grassroots community and not-for-profit groups across Australia through its annual People of Post grants.
The People of Post initiative sees Australia Post team members, including Posties and Post Office workers, nominate local not-for-profit community initiatives that support some of Australia’s most pressing social issues in the areas of: mental health, disaster support and resilience, Indigenous children’s literacy, and environmental sustainability.
Kathryn Rodda, Hope in a Suitcase coordinator said, “This grant is amazing. We receive so many beautiful and generous donations of the
items we pack into the cases, but often we need to buy suitcases.”
The mission of Hope in a Suitcase is to provide children entering foster care and/ or out-of-home care, with something to call their own as they continue on their path in life.
“We love when community groups, schools, children/ youth groups and organisations get involved in supporting us.”
“It’s so important to teach the younger generation about compassion and supporting others in our community,” said Mrs Rodda. Since beginning in
November 2020 on the Fraser Coast, Hope in a Suitcase has delivered hundreds of suitcases full of new belongings such as clothes, toiletry items, blankets, cuddly toys, toys, books, crafts, activities, hair accessories, and “love” to children entering or in foster care.
People can donate items throughout the year to the Bendigo Bank in Hervey Bay and Riverside Christian College in Maryborough.

TRACY Flint is Brisbane-born and bred and proud of it! She grew up in Banyo on the North side of the city and completed her schooling at Banyo High.
Despite not being a straight-A student, she loved her school years, but chose to enter the workforce after graduation rather than pursuing university, as she was unsure of her career path back then.
As the eldest of three children, Tracy recalls a wonderful childhood and treasures the friendships she made during those years, some of which have lasted a lifetime.
She particularly remembers the annual holidays in Hervey Bay and being able to walk across the road to go fishing with her dad. Hervey Bay has remained a special place to Tracy.
Her first car, a yellow Escort, holds amusing memories, as it had
a mechanical problem and whenever it overheated the car stopped which resulted in many breakdowns. It also turned out to be a way to meet boyfriends as they had to pull over and help the damsel in distress.
Now fifty-two, Tracy exemplifies the value of life experience over formal qualifications and says you can’t learn life experience.
Her first job was as an account assistant at Australian Window Furnishings in Enoggera. Tracy was there for a few years until she had a chance conversation with someone who came into reception. This led her to join Compass Airlines, where she worked until the business’s unfortunate collapse.
Despite the challenges, Tracy regards her time at Compass as some of the best years of her life, it was also where she met her husband thirty
years ago.
The couple have a strong connection that has endured, despite the loss of their son Jordan at twenty-one weeks which was one of the most significant and painful experiences of Tracy’s life. Somehow, the experience brought her and her husband closer and led them to support Treasured Bears, a charity in Victoria that provides comfort to parents who lose children by giving them a teddy bear to walk out of the hospital with, so they are not walking out empty-handed.
Tracy values the empathy and understanding she was shown, recognising it as a gift despite the sorrow. This year marks their thirtieth wedding anniversary.
The couple now share their lives with Molly, a rescued Doberman who is three years old. Seeing the transformation from a dog suffering
at the refuge to a joyful companion has been a source of immense satisfaction to them both.
Travelling has been another highlight for Tracy, who loves meeting people from diverse cultures. She has visited several English-speaking countries, including England, Canada, and the United States, cherishing the connections made during these trips.
Tracy says, “The moment they hear that Australian accent people just gravitate towards you. I love meeting new people and find the whole experience exciting”.
Five years ago, Tracy and her husband moved to Hervey Bay. Seeking new ways to connect with the community, she joined the ‘Hervey Bay Rocks’ group, where she paints and hides rocks for others to find, bringing smiles and spreading
kindness.
This hobby has proven therapeutic for Tracy, her creations have travelled as far as the Czech Republic.
Additionally, Tracy is the treasurer of the Hervey Bay Cake Decorating Group, another outlet for her creativity and a way to forge new friendships.
Since last December, Tracy has worked at Akama Resort, enjoying the interactions and listening to the stories of happy holidaymakers from all over the world.
Tracy’s colourful hair and bubbly personality leave a lasting impression on everyone she meets. She believes in spreading kindness and joy, making Hervey Bay a better place with every smile and friendly hello.

PETER Geddes, aged 62, recently performed his Black Belt test, achieving a very high standard in front of his 7th Dan Master, his classmates, his wife, and his family.
Master Michael Landas from Close Quarter Combatives commented, “This achievement marks Hervey Bay's first male Black Belt in our Over 50’s program. Peter has been training tirelessly for over three years now and never misses a class.”
Peter’s grading process involved a series of rigorous tests. He displayed all his patterns, engaged in six rounds of sparring, demonstrated all forms of set sparring, and executed multiple wood and roof tile breaking demonstrations. His skills were further tested with knife defence techniques, complex kicking and punching combinations, street selfdefence scenarios, and a demanding fitness component.
On the assessment day, Peter was promoted to the new position of Assistant Instructor, which will eventually lead to him becoming a full Instructor/ Sensei under CQC.
Landas, a World Ranking 7th Dan Black Belt, praised Peter, saying, “Peter received
this honour due to his high level of skill, his extensive knowledge of the art, his ability to communicate and teach this knowledge to those below, and his consistent respectful conduct.”

The centre is proud to announce another Over 50’s Beginners Course for anyone wishing to give martial arts a try. This course is designed to introduce older adults to the benefits of martial arts, including physical fitness,

First home buyer’s success – low deposit
This week, we have 2 first home buyers settling on a $619,000 house and land package in our local suburb of Eli Waters. We took advantage of current Government incentives including the $30,000 QLD First Home Buyers Grant (FHOG) and the Government’s First Home Guarantee Scheme. By showing some consistent and up to date rental history in lieu of ‘Genuine savings’, we were able to obtain finance for them with just
a $10,000 total cash deposit. Our Go Further Finance brokers were able to assist with the paperwork involved in loan application and in obtaining Government grant and scheme approval. Spotlight! Lending policy of the fortnight
Lending policy refers to the set of guidelines, rules, and criteria that a financial institution or lender follows when determining whether to approve a loan to a borrower.
Today’s policy: Genuine Savings
Genuine savings refers to the requirement set by lenders for borrowers to demonstrate the ability to save funds over time, usually 3 months or more. It is used to show the borrowers ability to put funds away in a consistent manner in the same way they would if they were repaying a loan.
An alternative for ‘Genuine savings’ is a rental ledger. This is a document which provides evidence of consistent rental payment made as a tenant and can be considered in place of cash savings when applying for a loan.
First Home Guarantee.
The First Home Guarantee is an initiative by the Australian Government that helps eligible buyers purchase their first home sooner. Usually, first-home buyers with less than a 20% deposit need to pay lenders mortgage insurance (LMI). Under the scheme, eligible buyers can buy or build a new home with a deposit between 5-20% without paying LMI
Who is eligible?
To be eligible you must:
• be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
• be over 18 years old
• buy by yourself or with one other person
• Not have owned residential property in Australia for at least ten years
•
• have earned $125,000 or less in the last financial year as a single, or $200,000 or less combined income as a couple
• have 5% available in funds (from any source)
• live in the property
