Launch of Hervey Bay/ Maryborough For Yes Campaign
The “Hervey Bay/ Maryborough for Yes” campaign is pleased to announce the launch of its activities to support the Yes vote in the upcoming referendum on constitutional recognition for Australia’s First Nations people. The aim of the group is to disseminate accurate information to enable informed voting in the referendum later this year.

I RECENTLY had the pleasure of attending the Fraser Coast Mates Golf Day at the Hervey Bay Golf Club.
In my line of work and business interests, we are always attending something, sponsoring something or lending our marketing and editorial skills to a worthy local project.
That is what the community spirit is like in Hervey Bay.
This was the seventh Fraser Coast Mates Golf Day, and we had the absolute pleasure of being the major sponsor with our business, Prime Agents. More than 200 golfers turned out for a hit, and over 100 women enjoyed the day inside the Flourish tent.

Members of the community living on Butchulla/Badtjala land in the Hervey Bay/ Maryborough area are being asked to come together to support the Yes campaign. This grassroots group will work together with the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community in the lead up to the referendum. The nonIndigenous community are being asked to come together in response to the generosity of First Nations people to walk together and accept the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
The local group is working with the national Yes23 campaign, which offers a
united movement to support an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.
The local Yes23 group will be hosting activities and events in the community that will provide opportunities to discuss the issues regarding the Voice to Parliament.
The group invites all people in the Hervey Bay/ Maryborough area to get on board and help make this important change happen at the upcoming Referendum.

Disaster of Proposed Council Building
As many other like-minded concerned ratepayers, I wish to add my worries regarding the proposed “Taj Mahal” Council building around the already busy Main Street and Torquay Road intersection. There are a number of reasons why this development should be seriously reconsidered: Site; Parking;
A similar thing is happening right here in Hervey Bay now, as we become a migration attraction city that sits in the top five nationally. There are so many incredible hyper-local projects in our city, like Fraser Coast Mates, Dunga Derby, Red Bike, the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre; the list is a long one.
As we all benefit from the growth that Hervey Bay brings, we must ensure that we maintain our sense of community and our connection to the grassroots events and initiatives that rely on our support to provide the valuable work they do.
Every great city maintains the diligence to continue to think small when that matters the most. We have an envious community spirit in Hervey Bay. Long may we protect that.

Area is already a congested traffic disaster.
We are currently and will continue to pay increased rate charges. (10 million dollars from the Government is only a drop in the ocean of debt). Current council building is fine where it is - easily accessible and plenty of parking. Library does need to be rebuilt (not the bandaid solution currently in place!) Needs to be near the University. Talking to locals and reading letters to this paper confirms that my concerns are widespread. Please Councillors listen to
the people. Why not put it to a vote?

Centre? Maryborough with their flooding problems needs one more than Hervey Bay.
Expand the Council Administration Building in Tavistock Street where there are five acres and plenty of room to coordinate a disaster situation if necessary and plenty of parking in the surrounding streets and on the five acres to accommodate the extra cars and emergency vehicles and equipment that Main Street just doesn’t have.
There is no need for a new library, so it can stay where it is and expand there. There is land in front of the library and behind it for the library and the university to expand.
The Council and a Federal Government Grant is spending millions on repairing the roof of the library, so that’s one problem already fixed. As I have said before the 40 million dollars does not have to be spent on a new Council office, the plan says that it is to be spent on revitalisation of the CBD.
Why not use it to build the community use spaces. The good people of Maryborough are already upset about the amount of money the Council spends in Hervey Bay compared to Maryborough.
When the amalgamation happened, Maryborough was debt free and could spend their money on what the
ratepayers of Maryborough needed. They could have applied for their own Federal Grants and Funding.
This is a Council administration building we are talking about. The concept design is out of place with the surrounding buildings, current library, Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, university and open spaces, which are all single storey except for the university which is two storeys.
There are to be Council offices built in Maryborough, and that cost must be taken into consideration also. Council must stop their excessive spending and start thinking more carefully about what and where to spend the rate payer’s money that benefits all areas on the Fraser Coast.
The new library and Council administration building does not do this as it will only benefit mostly Hervey Bay residents. What about the over 60 towns and localities that are included in the Fraser Coast Regional Council areas that need funding for their needs? How will they benefit from over 100 million dollars of their rates being spent in Hervey Bay?
Even with the 40 million of Federal funding, the final amount for the build will cost the Council 100 million dollars with increased costing.
If the Council has already spent money and needs to be repaid, then that is better than 100 million dollars of rate payer’s money being spent on a building for ratepayer paid workers to go to work in and people to borrow books and use the internet. Sorry, I just can’t agree on this one with you.

With reference to L. Sternberg’s letter concerning the rejection of the Hervey Bay Art Society by the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery, I would like to support everything she has said, but would also like to add that it has not only been the Art Society which has been rejected, but, with very few exceptions, the entire local art community, in order to turn a beautiful (and no doubt very expensive) art exhibition space into a depressing political soapbox.
It seems ridiculous to me that local artists, regardless of the high quality of their work, now have to take that work to a gallery in another town. The Fraser Coast Council needs to be held responsible for this happening. Shame on you.

Comfort Kitchen statistics
HBNC’s free weekly community meal, Comfort Kitchen, has experienced a steady rise in numbers so far in 2023.
A total of 228 meals were served in January, 243 in February, 289 in March, 273 in April and 362 in May.
This comes after a very busy end of the year for Comfort Kitchen, with 402 meals served in November and 343 in December.
HBNC continues to provide other forms of relief, including making non-perishable food items and toiletries available through the Bless Box. Items are donated by community members, local businesses and organisations.

Building demolished for city centre revamp
A VACANT building on the corner of Main Street and Torquay Road in Pialba has been demolished ahead of the installation of underground power and the construction of the new Hervey Bay Library and Fraser Coast Regional Council Administration Centre.
Deputy Mayor Denis Chapman said the Australian Government was partnering with Council through the Hinkler Regional Deal to build a vibrant community hub in the heart of Hervey Bay.
“The new development in the Hervey Bay City Centre will feature a public plaza, a larger library over two levels, a Council Administration Centre incorporating a Disaster Resilience Centre and flexible community spaces that can be booked day and night,” he said.
“This project is a once-ina-generation opportunity to reshape the Hervey Bay City Centre, to create jobs and
drive economic growth and investment.

Game-changing Jobs Ready program extended
THE FRASER Coast Jobs Ready program has been extended for another year after a successful first 12 months assisting local jobseekers and employers.
In its first year, more than 100 residents accessed the free four-week jobs training program and more than half subsequently gained employment.
One participant Warren Hutch said he was thrilled by the quality of teaching during the intensive course.
“Before coming to this program, I thought it was ‘just another one of those programs’, but I soon realised this wasn’t the case,” Warren said.
“This is the best program I’ve ever been to, and I think there should be more.
“The staff gave me so much confidence, helped me through adversity and better yet, helped me land my dream job.”
Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Jade Wellings said the Jobs Pathways Program aimed to enhance participants’ job readiness by boosting confidence to help participants gain and retain jobs.
“It focuses on improving job-seeking skills, writing resumes and application letters, interview skills and how
to apply in person and online,” she said.
“While the Fraser Coast has one of the highest unemployment rates in the state, feedback from the business community indicates many are planning to offer new jobs in the near future.”
The Jobs Pathways Program is free, open to all ages and runs for four weeks, three days per week – Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 9am – 2pm. Participants will be provided with a light
breakfast and lunch.
The Jobs Pathways Program will run until June 2024.

State Budget delivers big build for Hervey Bay
THE PALASZCZUK Labor Government will build a big multi-storey car park at Hervey Bay Hospital to increase accessibility, convenience and reduce unneeded stress for patients, families, and visitors.
At a recent announcement with the Queensland State Treasurer, Cameron Dick MP the Member for Hervey Bay, Adrian Tantari said, “This commitment is great news for the Hervey Bay community with $60 million to be allocated from this year’s 2023-24 State Budget to build a new multistory car park.
“This project will nearly double the amount of car parks currently available and will support the Palaszczuk Government’s $82.3 million total spend expansion of the Hervey Bay Hospital in this year’s budget.
“A new multi-storey car park at the Hervey Bay Hospital will relieve a lot of stress for people who are already going through challenging times with their health, or the health of someone they love.
Mr Tantari said, “The new investment is another example of how the Palaszczuk Government invests in the Hervey Bay community’s growing needs around health.

With a full-time job already potentially lined up with a local day spa, Jesse is undoubtedly proud of his trailblazing achievement and excited about showing his talent to not only the Fraser Coast community but also further abroad.
“I’ve always wanted to get into makeup as I had been doing costume makeup for events, parties and gigs so I thought it made sense to take the next step and become professionally qualified as a beauty therapist, “ Jesse said.
“And it made sense to go with TAFE Queensland because the course has been
fantastic with its very practical approach, hands-on training and engaging work.”
So impressed was Mineral Earth, a local day spa, by Jesse’s training and talent that even before he completed his TAFE Queensland course, he was offered a job there.
In celebration of his good fortune and success, Jesse is eager to encourage others to consider pursuing a career in the beauty industry especially given the many other industries in which students can apply their skills, such as retail, healthcare and social assistance.
“I would definitely recommend this course as it’s a great starting point careerwise, and it gives you a taste of potentially everything that’s involved in the industry,” Jesse said.

Council’s vision for a promising future
Budget focuses on service delivery and planning for growth
FRASER Coast Regional Council’s 2023/24 budget focuses on efficiently delivering essential services while planning for growth, Mayor George Seymour said today.
Cr Seymour said that with inflation above seven per cent in Queensland and government grants to Council being reduced by $5 million, this year’s budget had been very challenging.
“As every household or business knows, everything is costing more. This year Council’s electricity costs increased by almost $3.5 million while the cost of building a kilometre of road has almost doubled,” he said.
“We also have less money coming in with both the Financial Assistance Grant and the waste levy rebate we receive from governments being reduced.
“Despite these challenges, Council remains focused on delivering essential services like water, waste and roads as efficiently as possible, while also planning for the future to meet the unique needs of our growing community.
“For the past five years, Council has kept general rate rises below inflation, and this year the rate rise will again be below inflation.
“Council has worked hard to deliver a financially sustainable budget that keeps the general rates increase to 4.9 per cent, which is 2.5 per cent below the Queensland inflation rate (7.4 per cent).
“The $75 infrastructure levy has been removed and added to the general rate, and we have made changes to ensure multiresidential properties now pay their fair share.
“For residential homeowners on the minimum general rate, the average increase to their total bill – including water and wastewater charges - will be about $4.41 per week.”

Key highlights of the Council’s 2023/24 capital works budget include:
• $39.1 million for roads, bridges and drainage;
• $56.9 million for water, waste and sewerage;
• $40.5 million for major projects, including caravan park upgrades, the Hervey Bay City Centre revitalisation and a new basketball facility;
• $8.1 million for parks, pools and playgrounds;
• $3.3 million for arts, cultural and community venues; and
• $1.3 million for footpaths and bikeways.

“We’re delivering new and improved roads, upgrading the water and sewerage networks and treatment plants, and investing in recreational facilities like parks, pools and sporting fields to maintain and enhance our region’s lifestyle,” he said.
“It’s about embracing the Fraser Coast way of life and creating connected communities through our places, spaces and people.”
“Council has sought to limit rate rises by examining how we can be more efficient in our operations through a range and level of services review,” he said.
“We’re spreading the cost of new infrastructure, such as new and upgraded water and sewage treatment plants, over several years through strategically timed borrowings while deferring projects where we can.
“Council will continue to support our local community groups and those in need through our grants programs, and pensioner and other concessions, valued at about $4 million.”
“While there are multi-million-dollar infrastructure projects, there are also smaller works that make a big difference. There are replacement bridges at Gundiah and North Aramara, and new equipment for the Tiaro Water Treatment Plant, to name just a few examples,” Cr Seymour said.

Individual project highlights in the 2023/24 Council capital budget include:
• $27 million towards the Hervey Bay City Centre revitalisation, which includes undergrounding powerlines and starting construction of the new Library and Administration Centre incorporating a Disaster Resilience Centre;
• $20 million to complete the new Material Resource Recovery Facility (recycling centre);
• $11.5 million to complete the Boundary Road extension;
• $10.2 million to redevelop the Scarness, Burrum Heads and Pialba Caravan Parks;
• $9 million to upgrade the Maryborough landfill;
• $6 million for the Teddington Water Treatment Plant sludge dewatering project;
• $5 million in recovery and repair works following the 2022 floods;
• $4.6 million to upgrade the Hervey Bay Aquatic Centre;
• $3 million for the new Howard Sewage Treatment Plant; and
• $2.8 million for the new basketball facility at the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct.
Upgrade for busy Kawungan intersection
Fraser Coast motorists travelling through a busy intersection in Kawungan will have a safer and smoother journey following an upgrade to the existing roundabout.
Cr David Lee said a range of works would be carried out at the McLiver Street and Davis Drive intersection starting this month, with the current temporary roundabout to be replaced.
“With Hervey Bay growing rapidly, there is more traffic on the roads, and the intersection of McLiver Street and Davis Drive is getting particularly busy as it is near the new Bunnings store,” he said.
“The intersection upgrade will include a new permanent single-lane roundabout, the replacement of a water main, line marking, footpath alterations, pavement reconstruction, asphalt resurfacing and concrete islands.
“The new roundabout and intersection upgrade will ensure
motorists are required to slow down, making it safer for those who travel through and live in this area.”
Cr Lee said Council’s workforce would start on the $800,000 project in early July, with completion expected by October this year, weather and construction conditions permitting.
“The works will require a full closure of Davis Drive for traffic entering from McLiver Street with detours to be in place,” he said.
“There will be a one-lane, two-way traffic flow in McLiver Street between Main Street and Tenimby Street under manual traffic control during the day and automated traffic lights at night.
“We apologise for the inconvenience while the upgrade is underway, and thank everyone in advance for their patience as Council works to make this important intersection safer for the community.”

FRASER Coast Regional Council has adopted the recommendations of a “range and level of services review” in this year’s budget to improve the organisation’s effectiveness and efficiency.
Cr David Lee said Council had spent more than a year examining what services it could and should deliver to meet community needs while ensuring its ongoing financial sustainability.
“Council funding from government grants is reducing while, at the same time, we have increased costs and demand for services as our community grows,” he said.
“That’s why we’ve put all our services under the microscope to consider what we should maintain at current levels, what we should increase, what we could reduce and where we can be more efficient.
“The recent decision to consolidate our network of waste facilities is an example of that.
“By closing four of our 11 waste facilities, we can still provide a high level of community service while saving ratepayers almost half a million dollars a year and ensuring the remaining facilities operate more efficiently.”
The new five-year Corporate Plan adopted by Council outlines four organisational priorities, which also underpin the range and level of services review. These are:
• Effectively managing and maintaining assets;
• Better planning for the future;
• Providing focused service delivery and
• Maintaining financial sustainability.

“The decisions we are making now will help us move from a deficit budget this year to a balanced budget in coming years without overburdening the community.
“It’s all about balancing the needs of the present with the needs of the future to ensure our region can continue to flourish.”

THE TERM Hooning refers to reckless and dangerous behaviour on public roads. The Legislation says this can include:
• dangerous driving
• careless driving
• driving without reasonable consideration for other people
LAST month the members of local car enthusiasts’ group, Conrodders Hot Rod and Custom Club Inc, came together to present a cheque for $8000 to local charity Community Flights Hervey Bay.
Community Flights is a not-for-profit registered charity with the mission to "close the gap to healthcare access" for regional and rural Queensland patients.
They provide free-of-charge aircraft transport for patients and carers to non-emergency medical treatment and services.
Community Flights was founded and is directed by local businessman Mark McMurtrie. Mark is highly
passionate about helping his community in particular with health related issues.
As owner of River Heads Pharmacy Mark has become well known to much of the wider community for his unique service and humour. He has taken an enormous amount of time out of running his business to give to this charitable incentive and needs as much support as the Hervey Bay locals can offer.
The Conrodders Hot Rod and Custom Club were therefore keen that the proceeds from this years annual North Coast Campout car show, held each year over Easter at the Maryborough Showgrounds, would go
towards Community Flights’ much needed program. The clubs ensured they had a group of hot rod and collectible cars on display with the cheque presentation.
Conrodders President, Brian Jacombs, was particularly pleased to thank the Club Members for their hard work, the public for their great turnout on the weekend and especially the club’s major sponsors for their support including Fraser Coast Regional Council, RSL Hervey Bay, MCD Aviation, Shannons Insurance, Bruce Saunders MP, Bob Jane Tyres, Autopro and Inspiration Paints.
• driving in a way that makes unnecessary noise or smoke
• racing or conducting speed trials on a public road. The legislation was designed to act as a deterrent from people engaging in dangerous behaviours that put lives at risk. The penalties imposed are strict, along with mandatory sentencing in some circumstances, and the offences are somewhat
broad and subjective. Even something as simple as playing your music too loud can be deemed as a hooning offence.
Each type of hooning offence carries different impound, immobilisation and confiscation penalties. Depending on the seriousness of the offence— you can be issued an infringement notice, a notice to appear in the Magistrates court or you may be arrested.
For certain types of hooning offences, your car can be impounded for up to 90 days and could even be confiscated at the end of legal proceedings.
There is a process for applying for early release of your vehicle if you think that the penalty is unreasonable
in the circumstances. You can make an application to the Commissioner of Police for the early release of your vehicle if you can prove that:
• not having your vehicle is causing you severe financial or physical hardship
• the cause of the offence has been corrected—for example, the vehicle has now been modified to comply with safety standards
• you are the vehicle owner and the offence happened without your consent
• the impoundment or immobilisation was unreasonable.
The application must be made to the Commissioner of Police through the Queensland Police early release of an impounded vehicle application form. You should also provide any documents that can back up your application.

Local triathlete tackles Ironman Cairns race

Geltch has recently competed in the gruelling Ironman Cairns with some big goals in his sights.
The Ironman Cairns is world recognised as one of the most spectacular courses in the world while providing a fitness challenge that will test the fittest in the country.
The event consists of a 3.8km swim, followed by a 180km bike ride and finishing with a marathon distance run of 42km.
Troy prepared for his fourth Cairns event with very different circumstances to his previous attempts. He is now a father of two that juggles his own business and family life
balances with over 15 hours a week of training.
“The lead up to Cairns has been my most challenging as it’s the first time I’ve had to find a healthy balance,” said Troy.
He completed the race in 10th position in his 3039 years age group which achieved one of his goals of qualifying for the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii.
“I’m currently not quite up to the standard that I want to be when I face the world’s best. When I one day line up in Kona I want to be in form to compete and not just participate.”
Troy feels we are “blessed
to live in a triathlon Mecca with our protected coastline, running paths, trail running and mountain biking network and safe cycling roads.”
He encouraged people to reach out to Hervey Bay Triathlon Club and enjoy the sport as he attempted his first Ironman Cairns seven years ago in “footy shorts and on a borrowed mountain bike.”
Troy’s story is even more inspiring losing over 50kg prior to his first event. The two year transformation that started with running led to his triathlon training. He feels anyone can learn the sport and the health benefits have changed his life.

All systems go for Torquay’s local networkconnected battery
TORQUAY residents are set to enjoy the benefits of Energy Queensland’s local networkconnected battery after it was officially opened this month.
The 4MW/8MWh battery was built next to Ergon’s Torquay Substation, on Emerald Park Way, Urangan. The battery is now fully energised and is in the final stages of testing ahead of its full commissioning.
The local network-connected battery will store the excess solar from approximately 1,000 customers during peak solar export times and return that in the evening during peak load periods, putting downward pressure on power bills.
Local network-connected batteries are connected at the zone substation and when combined with other network initiativessuch as orchestrated customer loads like EV charging, hot water systems, and distributed energy resource management, plus dynamic customer connections, LV pole top batteries, and dynamic operating envelops – will support Queensland achieving the 70% renewable target by 2032.
Local State Member Adrian Tantari believes Queensland residents are world leaders when it comes to using rooftop solar and Hervey Bay locals playing a leading role in the state.
“This battery will help to smooth out the electricity demand, which is not only good for the security of the network, it also puts downward pressure on wholesale electricity prices, which contribute to household bills, plus it makes environmental sense,” said Hervey Bay MP Adrian Tantari.
“Solar systems are on more than 40 per cent of homes here in Queensland, and these local network-connected batteries are another game
changer that will deliver energy security, affordability and sustainability for Queenslanders.
“By basing this battery in our community, where there are large volumes of roof top solar, it means the renewable energy here will be generated locally, stored locally, and then used locally.
“With this battery project we’re aiming for a win-win-win scenario that achieves the energy trifecta for communities throughout the state – affordability, security and sustainability.”
The Minister for Energy, Mick de Brenni, believes that as the state progresses toward its renewable energy target, batteries and other storage options will become increasingly important.
“The Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan is all about a future of cheaper, cleaner and secure energy for Queenslanders, powering good jobs in new regional industries,” Mr de Brenni said.
“We’re building the Queensland SuperGrid, Australia’s largest, to transport renewable energy and power industry and households.
“Local network-connected batteries will play a key role in supporting households and businesses to install more rooftop solar, putting more downward pressure on bills and easing the cost of living.”
Energy Queensland’s Executive General Manager, Operations, Paul Jordon, believes this will create jobs for the state economy.
“This battery is an important piece of Queensland’s Energy and Jobs Plan, as it will generate and support direct and indirect jobs in
these communities,” Mr Jordon said.
“This local network-connected battery program will also help to maximise the exports from roof top solar in this community now, and well into the future.
“The battery will also support the Queensland Energy and Jobs Plan targets of 70 percent renewable energy by 2030, and Net Zero Emissions by 2050.
“Plus, it will also help support the electricity network during periods of extensive flows of electricity in two directions due to demand.”
“This battery will store excess renewable
energy produced by solar PV systems during the day and discharge it in the evening when electricity demand is typically higher.”
Stage one of the local network-connected battery project saw five network-connected batteries built at Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Toowoomba, Townsville and Yeppoon.
Stage two is currently under way and will see 12 new batteries located in Cairns (Gordonvale and Kewarra), Townsville, Mackay, Emerald, Mundubbera, Gladstone, Howard, Toowoomba, Raby Bay, Bribie Island and Morayfield.

How does a vibrant CBD help with mental health?
LAST week we had renowned demographer Simon Kuestenmacher in Hervey Bay. Simon presented on the future opportunities and challenges for our city.
LOCAL golfing professional, Chris Taylor, has recently played what is recognised as one of the greatest golf courses in the world – Pebble Beach in California USA.
The Hervey Bay based golfer was recently invited to play in the Perry Parker Invitational which sees players from all over the world playing for a total prize money of over $70,000. The Invitational also raises funds for charities in the Bleeding Disorder community.
Chris received his invite due to a very successful season playing in the Australian Legends Tour now that he qualifies for the 50 years and over age popular events. The Australian tour is now being
recognised as one of the most competitive seniors tours in the world behind the USA based Champions Tour and European Tour.
“It’s been something I’ve been wanting to do is play some overseas tournaments and the invite came directly from Perry so I jumped at the chance”, says Mr Taylor.
Chris travelled with three other Hervey Bay Golf Club members and played some of the best courses in the world renowned golf region including Spanish Bay and Spyglass Hill Golf Courses.
While he finished midfield amongst an international class of players, he was pleased to see another fellow countryman,
previous Australian Open winner Peter Fowler being the eventual winner of the Invitational. Fowler is currently competing at the highest level for seniors on the Champions Tours and a multi winner on the European Seniors Tour.
Mr Taylor feels it is a good time for him to aim high with the seniors events. “I’m always looking to better myself and at 52 years of age, I’m certainly on the younger side compared to most of the players”.
If anyone is interested in playing Pebbles Beach Golf Course, almost $1,000 Australian Dollars will cover green fees and cart hire.
One of the facts that astounded me was that we have a 13% mental health issue compared to a 10% State average. This is unusual as a lot of the mental health issues are in our youth.
Simon also explained that the aging population have a lot of mental health issues around loneliness. Because we are so decentralised as a city, the elderly don’t have a sense of place. This is where a vibrant CBD is important.
CBD centralisation in Hervey Bay concentrates essential services, businesses, and amenities in the central business district, offering several benefits for mental health. It improves accessibility to healthcare, government offices, libraries and shopping centres, making it easier for
individuals, especially those with mental health concerns, to access the support they need. The bustling CBD encourages social interaction, reducing isolation and fostering a sense of belonging.
Economic opportunities generated by a thriving CBD led to job creation, enhancing financial stability and overall mental well-being. Incorporating green spaces and parks within the CBD provides access to nature and outdoor activities, reducing stress and improving wellbeing. The vibrant CBD creates a sense of place and identity, promoting community pride and cohesion.
While CBD centralisation contributes to a supportive urban environment, it is important to address mental health comprehensively through accessible services, community support, and awareness initiatives. CBD centralisation alone cannot solve all mental health issues,
but it plays a role in creating a thriving and mentally beneficial city.
This insight made me look at the new Council library/ chambers and community building in a whole new light. It has highlighted its importance, not only in economic terms, but in the health and wellbeing of our community. What Simon’s presentation has done for me is to reinforce that Council is absolutely making the right decision in moving forward with this building.
Well done to Council and the Councillors for the vision to block out the minority of knockers and make decisions for the greater good of our fantastic city Hervey Bay. This is a legacy project for all involved.

ASHLEIGH Manley is an Australian master watercolourist and has held solo exhibitions globally. He has also called Hervey Bay home for the last decade.
In May 2013, Ashleigh and his wife Kate visited Hervey Bay and went for a stroll along the Urangan Jetty, mesmerized by the vibrant hues of the sunset. On their way back to their lodgings, they passed by an empty shop with a phone number in the window. Overlooking the same picturesque jetty they had just walked along. Ashleigh decided to dial the number, and within a remarkably short span of three days, they had packed their belongings and relocated to Hervey Bay. It
was an instant and profound connection—a love at first sight that led to the birth of Ashleigh Manley Studio Gallery.
Ashleigh was born in Melbourne but grew up in the Eastern Suburbs of Adelaide and describes his childhood as wonderful. His dad was a painter but sadly passed away when Ashleigh was about eleven years of age. However, with the unwavering love of his mother and grandparents, Ashleigh found his way through the difficult times. Recalling his early influences, Ashleigh fondly remembers watching his mother paint, as she was not only an artist but also an avid collector. Witnessing her artistic
endeavours ignited his own passion for painting.
When Ashleigh turned eighteen, he became a Christian. Seeking guidance for his life’s purpose, he asked God for direction, and painting emerged as the resolute answer. Since then, Ashleigh has remained dedicated to his craft, continuously exploring his thoughts, ideas, and diverse means of artistic expression. For him, painting is an avenue of introspection and a profound exploration of one’s inner world.
Ashleigh said, “It’s just one of those things, sometimes the door opens, and you just step in. I have always loved painting because you are exploring your thoughts and ideas and different

Forty years ago, Ashleigh coincidentally owned an art gallery in Adelaide adjacent to a clothing store owned by a woman named Kate, who specialised in manufacturing formal wear. Destiny played its hand, and Ashleigh and Kate crossed paths, eventually leading to their union in marriage. They later relocated to the Gold Coast, where they resided for twenty years. During this period, Ashleigh served as the artist in residence at Sanctuary Cove, creating captivating paintings of various golf courses. The challenge of capturing the intricacies of composition and design in these settings fueled his artistic spirit.

Now all these years later, their studio gallery is firmly established along the Esplanade in Urangan. The shop combines Kate’s love of fashion and Ashleigh’s love of art. While Kate doesn’t manufacture anymore, she imports clothing from Italy and has a beautiful collection.
After fifty-three years of painting, Ashleigh has an extensive inventory of artwork.
At the age of seventy-three, he reflects on life’s challenges, particularly the passing of his younger brother last year. The sudden loss was deeply distressing as he was fit and healthy. In the face of such tragedies, Ashleigh’s faith becomes a pillar of strength, fostering personal growth and
resilience.
Ashleigh takes great satisfaction in contributing to his community. Every fortnight, he engages in an artistic endeavour at Bayside Transformations. Where he encourages others in their visual exploration, offering support on their creative journeys. Additionally, he cherishes the moments spent with his daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren who reside in Adelaide, frequently returning to visit them.
Living in Hervey Bay is regarded by Ashleigh as an immense blessing. He holds a profound appreciation for the incredible surroundings this place offers, truly recognising its awe-inspiring beauty.
