SOME of our readers may remember a piece I wrote last year about a young woman in our community … Nikita Falconer. Eighteen months ago, the 32-year-old mother of two received the news that she had breast cancer at a stage 4 level. That’s enough to rock the world of the most mentally and physically strong person; to give them rise to ask, why me, it’s not fair. Rather than dwell on the hand that was dealt to her, she displayed amazing courage to observe what was going on around her and identify the needs for more equipment at the Forbes Cancer Clinic, located at St Stephens Hospital. She planned and executed an epic event at the Beach House Hotel last year and raised more than $130,000 to fund a second cold
LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR High-rise development should be welcomed
As a ratepayer in FCRC who lives and works in Melbourne, but has family in the FCRC - it is my express opinion that high-rise development should be welcomed in Hervey Bay and Maryborough. The Council has a significant volume of accumulated investment in the infrastructure being provided to the many communities within the FCRC zone. The lifecycle costs of such infrastructure is significant in terms of planning, project delivery, operations, maintenance, renewals
(reinvestments to maintain service delivery standards) and replacement at the end of life, generally with something better - in terms of sustainable operations and size - to meet future demand of a growing community and holiday destination. Therefore the Council needs developers to invest in the region to provide additional rates of income to cover the increasing cost burden of supplying and maintaining community infrastructure. Otherwise, this cost burden will need to be shared by the existing ratepayer base meaning significantly higher future rates for all households. To achieve a balanced

She did it. You can read more about that in the story on page 21. So many people will be the beneficiary of her kindness and foresight. I believe it gave her purpose during a dark period in her life and I am sure this is a story that might be familiar to many of our readership base. Things don’t always go the way we want them to and the longer I have the privilege of being on this earth, I wonder why bad things happen to good people.
They say adversity amplifies who you are in thoughts and character. You would have to agree that is the case with Nikita. The flow on benefits to people who will be visiting the Forbes Cancer Clinic are immeasurable. You could form the opinion that the equipment would have been purchased anyway, because that is a huge health facility with an endless budget. I can tell you.. it wouldn’t have been. In a world adorned with kindness, compassion thrives, bonds strengthen, and hope flourishes—transforming each moment into a brighter, shared existence. Perhaps the best news out of all this, is Nikita is cancer free on her most recent scans, which is amazing news.

outcome - and a broader community acceptance of change - I propose that Council consider providing a rate increase cap (maximum of 4.5 to 5% every budget) to all existing ratepayers - on the basis of supporting Council to increase the rate base through multi-residential development approvals as well as normal residential and commercial development across the Fraser Coast Region. Good Change conversations always start with WHY- and then progresses to “What’s in it for me”. It is time to broaden the conversation and reduce the focus on the negative argument - primarily driven by a resistance to change
movement.

Following the excellent Publisher’s Point of View regarding the controversial high rise in Torquay I am prompted to make a few points. We have just spent five days in a high rise in South Brisbane, about 16 stories high, but too difficult to count. We met hardly anyone in the corridor, lift nor foyer, really a bit lonely. The apartment was excellent, but from our spacious balcony it was difficult to avert ones gaze into the other apartments across and below us.
So, despite the height, one loses one’s privacy. Rather than a background sound of cicadas and frogs with occasional bats which we appreciate in Hervey Bay, we had the background sound of air conditioners. Over the years, on our boat in Urangan marina, it was quite infrequent that we got the impression that many people were actually in residence in the various surrounding apartment blocks. So one wonders about how many nights-per-year apartments are actually occupied at present in Hervey Bay, similarly what will the daily occupancy be in the proposed Torquay high rise. I agree with your columnist,
Glen Winney, that so many of the buildings on the Esplanade are dated and not very attractive to tourists. Personally, I favour the appearance and tastefulness of the present 6/7 story apartment buildings spread along the Esplanade from Buccaneer Drive, Urangan to Beach Road, Pialba. As for the controversial proposal for a high rise at Torquay, I am a bit reserved, indeed intimidated, that a developer, having already paid $10 million for the site, $400,000 on development application and could be prepared to pay another $500,000 legal fees. One should be pleased that a developer has an interest in Hervey Bay, but I favour a plan that has charm, complements the general character of the area and fits in with those features that distinguish Hervey Bay from rival regions in South East Queensland.

Development of The Hervey Bay Resort
I have recently read your column for the development of the Hervey Bay Resort and find that there is some information that has either been conveniently left out and not mentioned in the hope it would not affect the vote by the Council. However, during the 1990s the then Hervey Bay City Council conducted a referendum/vote within Hervey Bay to set the building height limit for the Charlton Esplanade, the result being a height limit of six (6) stories. The residents of Hervey Bay at that time have spoken and that, as I understand it this decision cannot be altered without another vote. How do I know? I voted, along with many other current residents of the Bay. In the past there have been, I believe some developments that may have been approved that exceed this limit. How can this happen? Those
elected need to obey the letter of the law and not make inappropriate decisions. Why don’t we have daylight saving, a referendum was conducted and the result was NO, governments cannot change this. What is the answer? Progress is needed in moderation along the Charlton Esplanade and must meet the needs of those who live here. Therefore, go back to the people and conduct another vote and see what the majority want. Councillors are elected by the residents and need to listen to what they say, but I doubt it.

Fraser Coast residents now have another opportunity to have their say on a development application for a hotel and residential apartment complex at 408 – 412 The Esplanade in Torquay. Fraser Coast Regional Council Acting CEO Gerard Carlyon said the public notification process had restarted this week after there was a technical error from the applicant in the initial process. “The applicant has chosen to reopen the public notification process until 31 January 2024,” he said. “There have already been about 1500 public submissions about this development application and there is no need for anyone who has already made a submission to make another one. “The reopening of the public notification process does, however, provide an opportunity for anyone who missed the chance to have their say in the first round last year, or those who were advised their submissions were not properly made, to make a submission by 31 January 2024.” Mr Carlyon said this development application was one of about 300 currently being assessed by Council. “Under the Planning Act,
the development application process is driven by the applicant. Council’s role is to assess and respond to whatever applications are made,” he said. “This particular application includes hundreds of pages of documents and studies, along with 1500 public submissions so far, so a formal report and recommendation from Council officers isn’t likely to come before a Council meeting for a decision for several months.” Mr Carlyon said Councillors were required to take an unbiased approach to assessing reports presented to Council meetings and Councillors were yet to officially see any of the formal documents, studies and public
submissions. “Under the Local Government Act, if a Councillor was to express an opinion now either for or against the application, it may mean they would then have a conflict of interest and may be unable to vote when the formal report comes before Council in the next three to six months,” he said. Regional Art Gallery goes from strength to strength
ABOUT 20,000 people have visited 17 exhibitions featuring 123 different artists at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery since it reopened in April 2022 after a major renovation. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said the gallery was developing new local audiences and establishing itself as a landmark cultural attraction for Queensland, interstate and international visitors. “The Fraser Coast has a colourful and vibrant cultural life, and Council is keen to ensure our community has opportunities to appreciate its arts, heritage and cultural diversity,” he said. “Our gallery team is committed to sharing art within our community and has produced 68 public programs and hosted more than 60
school and group visits since the reopening in 2022. “More than half the visitors to the gallery are local (52 per cent), with 22 per cent Queensland visitors, 19 per cent interstate visitors and seven per cent international visitors. “It’s interesting to note too that more than half (54 per cent) of those visiting since April 2022 had never visited the gallery before. “Through art, we can better understand the world around us and how we are all connected. “I hope residents and visitors enjoy spending time in the gallery and are inspired, engaged and challenged by our 2024 exhibition program.” Cr Seymour said the 2024 program centres on storytelling
with diverse exhibitions ranging from the history of South Sea Islander labourers in the region, to the innovative use of recycled waste water in sustainable timber plantations, to the unconventional beauty of suburban architecture. “The 2024 program develops and promotes the arts in the region by celebrating established Fraser Coast artists and platforming the next generation of creative talent,” he said. “Through partnerships with leading national institutions, local artists’ work will be complemented by cutting-edge art from the rest of Australia and the Asia Pacific.” For more information on the 2024 program and the current exhibitions, go to www.hbrg. com.au

THE MILES Government is thrilled to announce that Wide Bay’s frontline medical workforce will be bolstered by the addition of 28 new junior doctors in 2024. Wide Bay remains a key hub for regional medical training, as the 28 new medical interns, including 12 in Hervey Bay and Maryborough, join Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS). Notably, three of them hail from Hervey Bay, solidifying the region’s influence in healthcare. The new recruits will gain a valuable hands-on learning experience working in WBHHS regional hospitals over the next 12 months, under the guidance and supervision of senior clinicians. The new interns at Hervey Bay Hospital commenced with an eight-day orientation program to familiarise themselves with the local hospitals, their services, and procedures. Over the year, they will then undertake rotations in key areas including medicine, surgery or orthopaedic surgery and emergency medicine, along with the opportunity to rotate to other specialised areas such as obstetrics and
gynaecology, anaesthetics, mental health, and paediatrics. The Miles Government is committed to bolstering Queensland Health’s workforce having invested $40.6 million in the 2023-24 budget to attract and employ more staff. “I’d like to congratulate these highly valued junior doctors on their appointment within the world-class Queensland Health system,” said Acting Health Minister Mark Ryan. “Starting a hospital internship is a major milestone for any doctor and marks the start of what will hopefully become long and successful careers providing healthcare for the community.” Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said, “It was fantastic to meet with Hervey

THE HERVEY Bay popup library will continue operating for another month while cleaning and minor maintenance are completed at the refurbished library building on Old Maryborough Road. Fraser Coast Regional Council CEO Ken Diehm said Council had hoped to reopen the refurbished Hervey Bay Library building in early February, but that had now been pushed back a fortnight. “A pop-up library has been operating at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery for the past six months while the library building’s roof and air conditioning were replaced and other minor maintenance
occurred,” he said. Mr Diehm said they had planned to close the popup library and reopen the refurbished library building in early February. “However, we need to do some cleaning in the refurbished Hervey Bay Library building and have some finishing touches to do before the building can reopen. “That means the popup library near the gallery will now stay in place until Saturday 17 February with the Old Maryborough Road library building reopening on Tuesday 20 February. “Council apologises for the inconvenience and thanks our
library members and staff for their continued patience and understanding. “Hervey Bay Library programs have been operating at alternative venues in recent months and that will continue where possible. We encourage everyone to check the Libraries’ page on Council’s website for the timings and locations of events and programs. “It’s also important to remember that our other four library branches at Maryborough, Howard, Burrum Heads and Tiaro continue to operate as normal.”

Local plumber warns of unlicensed tradies
GUARANTEED Plumbing owner Heath Wilson has been in the trade a long time, and he has seen a lot of changes in the service industry. But it is the advent of unlicensed tradespeople and the cost they can leave behind when things go wrong, that he believes is becoming a more prevalent and worrying trend for homeowners. “Late last year I was undertaking some insurance inspections on behalf of insurance companies, inspecting some leaking bathrooms,” Heath said. “I had two in one day, where the shower bases were leaking, due to substandard waterproofing. Both bathrooms were less than twoyears old.” “These are not inexpensive to repair and both homeowners had engaged handymen who were neither insured or licensed to carry out the work undertaken.” For homeowners, this can be a minefield and end up costing them a lot of money, as there is no insurance to remedy the issues. “When a customer places a claim with their insurance company, it is vital that they verify the work being

That was, they will be insured if something goes wrong.” “Finally make sure you get three quotes for all renovation or larger work. If something is way too cheap, and sounds too good to be true, it often is.”

Achieving a black belt at the age of 68 ON DECEMBER 4, 2023, the martial arts community in Hervey Bay buzzed with excitement as Ms Shona Baigent, a spirited 68-yearold, made history at CQC Martial Arts. With the radiant glow of accomplishment on her face, she proudly posed for a photograph, wearing the symbol of her dedication - a newly earned Black Belt in Taekwondo. Under the guidance of the esteemed World Ranking 7th Dan Master Michael Landas, Shona embarked on a remarkable journey of self-discovery and martial prowess. As a member of CQC Martial Arts, renowned for its expertise in Close Quarter Combatives, Shona specialized in the art of Taekwondo, becoming a shining example in their over fifty’s program. Shona’s achievement marked a milestone for the Hervey Bay club, as she stood as the first individual to attain a Black Belt. A testament to her unwavering commitment, she dedicated 3.5 years of relentless training to reach this
pinnacle. “It was a big achievement, Martial arts has helped me physically and mentally,” Shona said. The arduous grading process she undertook included a rigorous display of Patterns, six rounds of Sparring, Set Sparring, Wood and Roof Tile Breaking Demonstrations, Knife Defence, Kicking and Striking Combinations, Street Self Defence, and a demanding fitness component. In the wake of her success, Master Michael Landas expressed pride in Shona’s determination and skill. He announced plans to launch Over 50s Adult Starter Courses commencing this year, welcoming individuals

The Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum’s 50th birthday will be recorded in history thanks to a $2530 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant. The grant will cover the cost of publishing two double page features in the Hervey Bay Advertiser leading up to the milestone event on March 16, 2024. Museum President John Andersen said the special features will cover stories and photographs celebrating the golden anniversary of Hervey Bay’s iconic village and its journey to becoming one of the best museums in Queensland. Plus, photos and stories on the phenomenal changes Hervey Bay has experience in the past 50 years. On March 16, 1974, a crowd of about 1000 people gathered at the gates of the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum for its grand opening with two buildings, damper cooking and a model aircraft display. At the time, Hervey Bay was in the State Electorate of Isis so having State Government Member Jim Blake conduct the opening ceremony was certainly special. John said the crowd in attendance could have never imagined what was in store for the museum, and Hervey Bay, 50 years on. “The museum has grown to include a large area of land, over 25 buildings,
tens of thousands of priceless exhibits, an educational and research centre, and repository for the largest and best-preserved photographic record on the Fraser Coast,” John said. “The 50th Birthday celebrations will of course be a big event to celebrate.” The golden anniversary will also be etched in history with a special 200-page publication set to be released at the day of celebrations on Saturday, March 16, called “50 Historic Years”. The first 300 families through the gate will receive a complimentary copy valued at $40. The book features snippets of history from 1974 to now with the region’s hospitals, schools, roads, building and progress all recorded for generations to come. Join in the celebration at the museum on Saturday, March 16, from 9am with lots of free activities organised for the day. Vistors are encouraged to come dressed in period costume or as a 1960s-70s style guru. The winner of the ‘Design a Museum Flag’ will be revealed on the day. LAST year we wrote about Nikita Falconer, an incredibly brave woman, who has used the hand dealt to her to make a difference for other local cancer sufferers. The young mother of two young girls was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. Nikita was lucky enough to have access to the cold cap machine. Think of a helmet that pumps super cold liquid around your head to stop the chemo from taking all your hair. But there was a problem. There was only one machine in Hervey Bay, that just two women could share at any time. Nikita was having none of it. She planned and executed an epic event and raised more than $130,000 to fund a second cold cap machine and then some. spend money where it was really needed,” Cherry Spross manager of Forbes Cancer Centre said. “Cold caps help give patients their dignity and staff feel this is important while receiving treatment. If you look well, you feel better. Now up to
four people can use a cold cap machine at one time.” “New chairs were purchased at over $8000 each to give every patient the same comfortable chair to receive treatment in. Some of the older more basic chairs are quite uncomfortable to sit in for hours at a time.” “The blanket warmer was also purchased in order to keep patients warm as chemotherapy and the air conditioning can make patients very cold. This has been a welcomed addition to the Forbes Cancer Centre.” “Nikita has made a life-changing contribution to the comfort of patients when they come for treatment. It has helped to provide more holistic care and allowed us to look after patients’ emotional well-being through positive physical appearance. U3A Connecting Seniors HEALTHTALK Weight loss, the common to Lifelong Learning New Year’s Resolution HAVE you ever heard the phrase “I’m retired but I’ve never been busier in my life, I don’t know how I found the time to go to work?” These are people who have discovered the joy of being involved in an activity that stimulates their mind. Research has shown that keeping the brain active, doing interesting things and making new friends are important for helping older people maximise their chances of continued independence into the future so, change your life today and learn something new for the sheer pleasure. A great way to achieve this is to join University of the Third Age. Whether you are “Lusting for languages “or “Hysterical about history” this is the organisation that will fulfill all your needs. Founded in Toulouse, France in 1972 and in Queensland since 1986, U3A is demonstrably making a very substantial contribution to society by helping its members to remain healthy and active for longer, thus lessening the strain on our already overstretched health system. U3A Hervey Bay aims to provide programs of learning for mature people who are in
complete or partial retirement, in the 3rd age of their lives, under a broad philosophy of ‘life long learning’. Courses are many and varied and a full list is available on the U3A Hervey Bay website, www. u3aherveybay.net. In 2024 courses on offer include Memoir Writing, Italian Language, British History, Yoga and much, much more. Classes are usually around two hours long and the emphasis is on friendly, fun learning. Most tutors are drawn from the membership and give their time and energy to share their knowledge and skills with the members.

So if anyone wishes to volunteer as a tutor and pass on their knowledge then please contact our Course Coordinator.” Annual membership is $30. JUST like that 2023 is behind us as we enter 2024. As the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, many of you would have had a resolution or two. They may have included “Quit smoking”, “Pay off the credit card bill”, “Take more time off” and many on the Fraser Coast would have embarked on a journey towards a healthier lifestyle, armed with a newfound determination to shed those extra kilos. Unfortunately, many of these New Year’s resolutions for weight loss tend to falter within the first few weeks or months. How to improve your chance of success?

FRASER Coast Regional Council has partnered with dirtgirlworld and Get Grubby TV to roll out a free environmental education program to local early learning centres, family day cares and primary schools. The Get Grubby program is a set of teaching materials for educators to guide children to get outside, get grubby, connect with nature and make better environmental choices. Cr Zane O’Keefe said the program was built around concepts that families value. “We know that early childhood educators and schools are always looking for practical and fun ideas and activities that encourage getting to know nature,
inspire great recycling, support growing food and celebrate ‘reducing’,” he said. “This educational material is championed by ABC kid stars dirtgirl, scrapboy and Costa the Garden Gnome.” The fun learning materials include videos, songs, printables, games and hands on activities. There are 10 units in the program, with most coinciding with world events such as World Environment Day and National Recycling Week. There are lots of fun activities to choose from on each topic including games, crafts, quizzes, music, videos and drama. For more information on the Get Grubby Program

NATALIE Alexander shares her story filled with diverse experiences, from a childhood in a small town to a career in law and advocacy for domestic violence victims. Her journey reflects resilience, compassion, and a commitment to making a positive impact. Natalie was born in Parkes, New South Wales forty-two years ago and has lots of fond childhood memories of crabbing and yabby catching with her older brother in the town’s dam. Sadly, her brother has since passed, but she remembers how close they were and describes those times as a lot of fun. Before the kids came along, Natalie’s mum was a nurse, and her
dad was a police officer but in the early 80s, when the kids were born, her parents stepped down from their careers and set up a general store instead. At the time there were no takeaway shops in town, so her mum and dad put in a pizza oven which was very successful. When Natalie was about eight, the family moved to Newcastle, and later, she got into hospitality. By nineteen, she took a bold step, moving alone to Sydney and working at the Balmain Tigers Leagues Club. However, it was her father’s influence that eventually led her to join the police force in December
2003, driven by a desire to help people and a passion for justice. Reflecting on her police academy days in Goulburn, Natalie recalls the question posed to recruits about their motivation for joining the force. For her, the desire to help people remained a driving force throughout her ten-year career. Policing, she describes, is a tough gig and highly stressful, with exposure to traumatic incidents ranging from fatal accidents to domestic violence and everything in between. “The trauma that you are exposed to is horrific. In every job you go to you are dealing with people who are at their worst. But it was great to be

She engaged in numerous diplomas and completed a Bachelor of Laws, while her kids were little, studying part-time over five years while managing a wedding business called Stylish Weddings. Post-graduation, she pursued a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice and is currently on the path to becoming a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.
Natalie has lived in Hervey Bay for a decade and chose the location for its weather. She is a divorced mother of a thirteen-year-old son and a ten-yearold daughter and currently, works remotely. Her work takes her to Western Queensland, where she passionately assists women and children facing domestic violence. After recently losing her mum, the experience prompted her to reflect on life’s purpose and the legacy one leaves behind. “You think about your life purpose and about how you would like to be remembered. It is important to be giving, loving, and kind and to chase
your goals.” Natalie works hard and appreciates where she is at. Her biggest life lesson is to listen to your gut. Intuition is there for a reason, so listen to it. Natalie says her life would be very different if she had listened to hers. Amid personal and professional achievements, Natalie cherishes her moments of solitude, sharing her life with a toy poodle named Princess, a guinea pig called Fluff Ball, and a cat named Speedy. Election officials play a critical part on the front-line during elections, helping millions of Queenslanders to have their say about who they want to represent them in their local communities. The thousands of casual roles on offer will cover work before, on, or after election day on 16 March 2024. Electoral Commissioner Pat Vidgen said applications are welcome from Queenslanders from
all backgrounds and in all parts of the state. “The ECQ’s state-wide team of election officials are everyday Queenslanders from all walks of life,” he said. “We’re recruiting now for the Council elections on 16 March 2024, so if you’re interested in helping to deliver democracy on the ground and help people in your community to have their say, then one of these roles might be a great fit for you.” “You’ll be paid for your work with us, have the opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills, all while getting the chance to see democracy in action.”
