Misunderstanding of new council building

I write to clear up some misunderstandings about the revitalisation of the Hervey Bay City Centre.

We need a new library as the current one is less than half the size it should be to meet national standards.

A bigger library in a new location means the university can expand, and that means better education outcomes for our local students.

The new building will include a new Council Administration Centre, providing centralised community services and bringing hundreds of staff together in one location.

That will be a boost for local businesses and means the current inadequate Council site in Tavistock Street can instead be used for much needed new housing.

More than three quarters of the new city centre development will be community space, including offices for study and business activities, along with an outdoor public plaza where there could be events, markets, live music, a pop-up cinema, and reading lounges.

This important project provides a once-in-ageneration opportunity to create jobs, grow the local economy and drive business investment.

I agree totally with the other correspondents about how beautiful living in Hervey Bay is and how friendly everyone is.

On that note I want to bring to the attention to the residents of Hervey Bay about the Fraser Coast

Cockburn (Executive Manager, Planning and Growth) in an open Q and A format on the new town planning scheme and what this means for you.

Now – here’s the thing.

Under normal circumstances, I’d sooner fly to the moon than plug a paid event in this column.

But your local council has the greatest direct impact on your day-to-day life and in my experience, it’s the area of government that residents generally pay the least attention to. Being properly informed about the dynamic future of the city you plan to buy in, build in, invest in or retire in, is uber wise.

Relying solely on information from your friendly local property developer or social media moderator, and treating it as the gospel,

Council’s decision to allow the downsizing of lot sizes in our region, some as small as 450sqm.

The Council are allowing developers to determine the smaller lot sizes. Have a look around at the new developments going in and you will see how small the lot sizes are.

This is totally detrimental to our region, and will change the landscape of our beautiful area forever.

The social impacts will be catastrophic, already we are witnessing increased crime rates in Hervey Bay, and the social impacts of people living so close together will be monumental.

I’m plenty guilty of getting stuck into Council when we share differing views, but I strive to ensure it’s from an educated and experienced position on the actual subject matter.

I’ll be attending this event to sharpen up my understanding of our great city’s future.

If you see yourself in this city for the next ten years, this is the perfect opportunity to gain that coalface horizon.

I applaud the FCPIA for organising this event, and the key Council operatives attending on the day, for providing this essential educational platform.

Housing Crisis

Sorry, but I am in agreement with the three Councillors who I gather from your article, opposed this new law.

If it is for all the homeless why refer to them as family and friends when they are likely to be complete strangers and how many homeless people are we talking about?

Any person worth their salt would help “family and friends” without this new law and without council permission to put them up in their home or a caravan for as long as they needed it.

What happens under their laws to the people after six months??

Sorry mate, back on the streets.

Those people willing to undertake this well intentioned act and of course those with a caravan, will have to bear the cost of the extra water, gas and electricity.

No compensation from the council.

In your article Page 15 it states “and this is one way

Council can help”. Really?

By asking the rate payers to look after the homeless with no incentive to do it?

A lot of people are doing it tough, the cost of living is out of control and our rates will go up again this year, as will the mortgage rates.

If council is really concerned about the homeless perhaps they should shelve the new admin offices and build a place for them.

I wonder how many of the eight Councillors who voted on this new law are inviting the homeless to stay at their place?

Council got 5000 signatures and eight Councillor votes, maybe they should have asked some of the other 57,000 people who call Hervey Bay home. Lindy

Turning a blind eye

For years governments elected by us have turned a blind eye to public housing!

Worse, they have sold off what public housing there was and we were no better, I’ve heard people say “no Commission Housing” thank you, it drags the area down.

So we now are faced with our councils “new local law change’, allowing people to squat on the front or back lawn of their friends or neighbours.

Will the water, power and sewerage systems cope?

Who will monitor the time these squatters stay?

Can our roads sustain more

parked vehicles? Has our council really given this any thought?

Just think how much public housing could be built with the $60 million of ratepayer’s money to be spent on the new council chambers.

The rents for these public houses would have been a constant income for our region, while alleviating to some degree the public housing shortage.

New Sea Bar 469

I recently celebrated my 50th Birthday party at an RSL venue - the Sea Bar 469 - and it was a better party than I could have imagined for myself!

The staff went out of their way to make sure I had the best venue to hold my ‘BACK TO THE MUSIC’ themed party, complete with Karaoke and dancing.

At first, the party didn’t look like it was going to happen due to my need to Karaoke and dance into the night... but thanks to amazing RSL staff, particularly Damien Siegid from ‘The Clubhouse Hervey Bay’ and RSL Management, who went out of their way to find me a suitable venue.

The venue was stunning and just the perfect backdrop to the retro theme.

The food was just right, at the right price and they even organised a package that included a bar tab!

Restaurant - was magical and even more so as I was able to have the whole place for my party!

I noticed the restaurant made the front cover of the Advertiser on January 12th, just a few days after my party and I was so glad!

The staff (sic) made the evening!

Warm and friendly customer service and any issues were handled calmly, successfully and without me even knowing there was any issues!

A big thankyou to the RSL management and staff for excellent customer service - my birthday party was a dream come true for me and my guests!

Single Tickets –Brolga

I’m curious if other people have had the same problem when trying to book one ticket at the Brolga Theatre? Having chosen my preferred seat I receive a pop-up message informing me I cannot have my choice because it will leave a single seat.

It’s bad enough solo travellers have to put up with ‘single supplements’ at hotels etc without having yet more restrictions.

QPAC doesn’t have this policy. I’d have thought regional venues would want to encourage patrons.

New website is making it easier for small businesses

SMALL businesses in Southern Queensland can get support at the click of a button through a new one-stop shop website offering free financial counselling and wellness coaching.

Launched last week, the new Small Business Financial Counselling Service (SBFCS) Southern Queensland website makes it easy for small business owners to access assistance if they’re experiencing money problems or mental health and emotional wellbeing stress.

SBFCS Southern Queensland Chief Executive Officer Ross Leggett said many small business owners in Southern Queensland have been doing it tough over the last few years and it’s important they can easily access the support needed to get back on track and achieve their business goals.

“The new website offers easy to understand information about our free financial counselling and wellness coaching, together with allowing business owners to request an appointment with their local Small Business Financial Counsellor or Business Wellness Coach.”

“We know small business owners are busy during

working hours, so we’ve made it simple to request an appointment on our website at a time that’s convenient for businesses,” Mr Leggett said.

Our Small Business Financial Counsellors can help businesses get their finances back under control, including assisting with business goal setting, action plans, improving cash flow, commercial lease negotiations, creditors, dispute resolution services and accessing financial support.

Hervey Bay’s very own Married At First Sight

DANIEL Hunjas was a Hervey Bay local up until moving to the Gold Coast with his expanding business ventures four years ago.

“Life has been equally both challenging and rewarding. Almost every aspect of my life has gone through some kind of change… mentally, physically and spiritually.

“I semi-retired two years ago and now enjoy a lot more free-time. I live a very active beach lifestyle and I’m always looking for that next adventure” Mr Hunjas said. Hervey Bay pump track site chosen

A PARK behind the current Hervey Bay Library and the University of the Sunshine Coast’s local campus has been earmarked as the site for a pump track in Hervey Bay.

Cr Jade Wellings said Fraser Coast Regional Council recognised that pump tracks were becoming popular recreation facilities across the country with a recent feasibility study highlighting the demand for pump tracks in the region.

“A pump track is a circuit of rollers, banked turns and jumps designed to be ridden by generating momentum by up and down body movements, instead of pedalling or pushing,” she said.

“Now that Council has decided on a site, we will start the concept design phase and hold community engagement sessions soon to help finalise the design.

“The aim is to have the community engagement phase completed by the end of June so designs can be created and the facility built in the 2023/24 financial year.”

Council secured a $1.3 million Works for Queensland grant from the State Government to build pump tracks in Maryborough and Hervey Bay.

Following a review of multiple sites across greater Hervey Bay, Council decided that Fraser Coast Park was the best site for the facility.

Fraser Coast Park is located between the University of Sunshine Coast, Council Library, Condy Park Kindergarten, Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) and the Mary to Bay Rail Trail.

“The pump track will promote active use of the space and encourage activity outside of normal business hours,” Cr Wellings said.

“The planned construction of a carpark near the facility in conjunction with the new Council administration, library and disaster resilience centre will also support the pump

track facility and provide additional passive surveillance of the site.

“Part of the park will still be available for events and there is still room for the University of Sunshine Coast to expand.”

The proposed tracks in Hervey Bay and Maryborough will include three distinct sections to cater for beginners, intermediate and experienced users.

“Council is determined to support an active and healthy community through providing parks and open spaces that are enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities,” Cr Wellings said.

“We are excited to develop these new facilities to bring locals and visiting families together.”

Have your say on local law changes

FINES for illegally parking in a spot reserved for a person with a disability could more than double and regulated parking areas would be updated under proposed changes to Fraser Coast local laws.

Fraser Coast residents are being asked to provide feedback on proposed changes covering a broad range of issues including waste management, parking, fire safety and shopping trolleys.

Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott said the proposed changes to the local laws come after community consultation and feedback.

“Council is responsible for making and enforcing local laws on issues not governed by state or federal laws,” he said.

A proposed amendment to Local Law No. 7 (Waste Management) 2018 would prevent the disposal in bins or other rubbish facilities of previously omitted material such as radioactive waste.

“The amendments would

also clarify the onus of providing appropriate waste containers in serviced premises and restrict the time bins could be left on the kerb to 24hrs before or after a scheduled collection,” he said.

The proposal to amending Local Law 5 (Parking) aims to update the regulated parking areas to reflect additional, extended and existing parking areas and increase the penalty for parking in a spot reserved for a person with a disability.

The change would increase the fine from $287 to $575.

The online surveys are open until 11:55 pm on Wednesday March 1 with mailed responses accepted until the close of

business on Thursday, March 2. The Engagement Hub website also include a document library with copies of the current local laws and the proposed changes in detail.

The proposed changes to Local Law 3 (Community & Environment) would:

• avoid duplication with Queensland State legislation by removing designated smoke free areas, prescribed swimming pool standards and noise provisions;

• add new identified local pests;

• simplify regulations on the lighting of fires to make it easier to understand;

• increase penalties for repeat offenders with overgrown or unsightly allotments;

• increase penalties for shopping centre retailers who repeatedly fail to ensure trolleys remain within their precinct;

• broaden the definitions of a fire hazard, a community safety hazard, and building appearance to better clarify the intent of the law, and;

• make minor administrative and readability amendments as required.

Members embracing free library services

FRASER Coast residents are embracing the many free services and resources available at local libraries with membership rising from 41,722 in 2021 to 45,327 in 2022.

Cr David Lewis said it was fantastic to see that about 40 per cent of the population were now Fraser Coast Libraries members with membership growing by about 8 per cent in 2022.

“It’s such a wonderful service and it’s really heartening to see so many people taking advantage of our five libraries across the region,” he said.

“As well as books, libraries offer toys, DVDs, magazines, CDs and jigsaw puzzles for borrowing.

“On top of that, libraries have free wifi and desktop computers for use, as well as eBooks and eAudiobooks for borrowing online. We even have our own Fraser Coast Libraries app.

“As a result of community feedback, the libraries have also launched a new free film streaming service called Beamafilm, which can be accessed with any library membership from the comfort of home or mobile devices.”

Cr Lewis said popular programs such as Rattle and Rhyme, Under 5 Time, STEAM, film screenings and wildlife talks were all restarting this month, while the annual Lines

in the Sand program of inspirational events for readers and writers would be expanded across the region this year.

“2023 promises to be an exciting year in our libraries with the Playtime Passport for under fives recently rolling out, the Design a Bookmark competition launching in March,” he said.

Cr Lewis said volunteers played a vital role in our local libraries, contributing 5920 hours of work across the five branches in 2022.

“Our volunteers do a magnificent job on a range of tasks including reshelving library books and resources, providing family history research assistance, toy cleaning and preparing free activity packs for the public,” he said.

“The top 10 most borrowed items in these collections reveal that Fraser Coast readers and film watchers favour crime, mystery and thriller stories, along with a sprinkling of family drama, Australian tales and comedies,” he said. Dream comes true for Rally Raffle Winner

KEVIN Crosby from Hervey Bay had a dream that he would win the Raffle For A Cause Toyota Landcruiser 300 Series GXL.

Kevin had already purchased a raffle ticket as he did every year.

With a few weeks remaining for the major prize to be drawn, he decided to trust his dream and purchase another ticket. That was the lucky ticket.

Mr Crosby received the phone call on the day of the draw that left him speechless. He was the new owner of a Toyota Landcruiser valued at $114,000.

“I just had this gut feeling I was going to win…….I was stunned when I got the call” he said.

Kevin was celebrating his 73rd birthday on the day he received the prize.

The ex-builder has had his fair share of tough times throughout his life. He lost his first wife to Cancer and then his second wife to Meningococcal.

He asked for no sympathy and has since found a new life in Hervey Bay for the last 15 years.

Carinity and Fraser Coast churches come together to assist vulnerable families

VULNERABLE people on the Fraser Coast will be supported by a new church initiative funded by Queensland not-for-profit, Carinity’s Collaborative Community Projects.

Eight Baptist churches in Maryborough, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich, Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast have been awarded grants through the second round of the Collaborative Community Projects program.

Almost $500,000 in funds will be allocated to fund eight new projects and continue support for 10 existing projects who received multi-year commitments of support in the inaugural round of Collaborative Community

Projects in 2022.

The second round of Collaborative Community Projects funding recipients include Maryborough Baptist Church.

Maryborough Baptist Church will establish a local Creating Opportunities and Casting

Hope (COACH) mentoring program.

The COACH program helps to empower those facing disadvantage and build resilience through one-to-one mentoring.

Hervey Bay Baptist Church was awarded Collaborative Community Projects funding last year, to also facilitate and host the local Creating Opportunities and Casting Hope (COACH) mentoring

program.

Brett Maunder from Carinity said the Collaborative Community Projects help to relieve and mitigate disadvantage, promote connectivity for vulnerable people, and increase the strength of local neighbourhoods.

“These sustainable ventures range from holistic community hubs providing a range of outreach services to grass-roots activities like ensuring people doing it tough can continue to access affordable food,” Brett said.

“It is truly exciting to see the range of support that Queensland Baptist churches are providing to vulnerable members of our community.”

Heckels has recently returned from the trip of lifetime aboard the Young Endeavour.

The Scheme began when the training ship STS Young Endeavour was given to the people of Australia by the United Kingdom as a Bicentennial gift in 1988. Since then, the program has provided challenging and inspirational training voyages for more than 14,000 young Australians.

“Having the opportunity to take the voyage on the Young Endeavour was an amazing adventure,” said Alistair Heckel.

“I not only learnt how to sail the ship, how to lead and inspire others, but also how to work together as a team.

“I got to meet some remarkable people and explore

spectacular parts of Australia that many others never get to see,” Alistair said.

“I didn’t need to have any sailing experience, we were taught everything that we needed to know.”

“I went in prepared to face my fears and to push myself out of my comfort zone and discover how I could rise up to challenges.”

“The voyage was a lot of fun, but it’s not a relaxing holiday.

“You’re stepping into a new world at sea and we were required to be an active member of the crew and contribute to the voyage.”

Swim club recognised at Good Sports Awards

FRASER Coast Swimming Club has been applauded at the Good Sports Awards at Parliament House in Canberra (February 16th), after being named runner-up for the 2022 Good Sports National New Club of the Year award and 2022 Good Sports QLD Club of the Year runner-up. The national Good Sports Awards celebrate Australia’s best community sporting clubs and volunteers, for their commitment to building healthy and inclusive club environments, and their work with the Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program in tackling topics like alcohol, illicit drugs, smoking, mental health and safe transport.

Fraser Coast Swimming Club was recognised at the Awards for inspiring positive change and going above and beyond in making its club healthy and family friendly.

Grants provide boost for sporting groups

EQUIPMENT to better irrigate athletics fields on the Fraser Coast, solar panels and renovations to dressing rooms and toilets will be funded under grants from the latest round of the Fraser Coast Regional Council 2022-23 Sport and Recreation Capital Assistance Grants.

Under the Sport and Recreation Capital Assistance Grants scheme, community organisations can apply for one-off funding to develop infrastructure that assists in the growth and engagement of sport or active recreation in the Fraser Coast region.

“Sport and recreation activities are vital to improve the health and wellbeing of the Fraser Coast community and these grants help ensure the long-term sustainability of community sport and active recreation groups,” Cr Daniel Sanderson said.

“While sport keeps us physically active, it also keeps us socially connected. It is where lasting memories are made and fond friendships formed. Supporting local sporting groups through this grants program is part of Council’s plan to build better communities together.”

The applications are considered by a panel of assessors that comprised of a Councillor, Council officers and an external community representative.

There were $85,149.81 in grants in this round distributed across the Wide Bay region with Hervey Bay receiving:

• Hervey Bay Pickleball Club, court fencing, $10,000;

• Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association, solar panels, $7,631.81;

• Wide Bay Gymnastics Club, concrete footpath and mobility access, $7,918.

Grant helps cheerleaders reach new heights

THEY flip, jump, stunt and tumble and now Braydoch Scott and Denman Hampton will fly their way to The Global Dance and Cheerleading Games in Hawaii this May.

The two Hervey Bay athletes have been selected to compete at the invitation-only four-day event where only a few cheerleaders from around the country were chosen to represent Australia.

They will compete against the best of the best in every country, nation, level, and style!

A $1500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant awarded to both athletes will help pay for their flights, accommodation, competition entry fees and event insurance.

The two formed a dynamic duo in 2019 when they started training together at Asgard All Stars.

The powerhouse performance they have been producing ever since has led them

“Denman has worked very hard balancing both school and training, coming home from training at midnight and then getting up for school the next day,” Monique said.

While balancing school and training Braydoch has also been working parttime to save enough money to attend the competition.

“This is a unique sport and requires hours of dedication and training. They have both put years into becoming incredibly versatile, strong athletes and this is shown by their acceptance into Australia’s International Level 4 squad,” Kelly said.

The RSL grant has got both boys dream to compete in Hawaii across the line.

DEREK Ingham has loved reptiles for as long as he can remember. Growing up on a farm could be harsh, but it gave him plenty of opportunities to observe and look out for these coldblooded, scaly creatures. Little did he know that he would end up working with them.

“I remember that when it was hay baling season, I would run ahead and turn over the bales of hay where the snakes would hang out. I would shove them with my work boots, so they moved along and escaped before my father got there and killed them. I was always looking out for the reptiles, even then.

Derek was born in 1962 in

Bairnsdale, East Gippsland, Victoria. He has two siblings and says he had a happy but hard childhood. His dad was a timber worker, so he worked away all the time and was only home on weekends for most of Derek’s young life.

“I loved my dad. He tried his best to earn as much as possible to look after his family.”

During his school years, Derek played baseball and did ballroom dancing. “My mother always wanted someone to dance with when she went to country dances, and as dad would not dance, I was it.”

Derek left school when he was fifteen and got an

apprenticeship as a panel beater as his dad could not afford to keep him in school. He has had many jobs since, from a spray painter to a Zookeeper, and even had his own business in the marine craft industry creating beautiful timberwork on the boats –which was where he got to meet Tom Cruise. Meeting him was what prompted Derek to take up acting.”

Derek has an impressive resume as an extra/feature extra in over thirty productions, including Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge and X-Men Origins “Wolverine”.

“Being an extra isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But the end result is worth it. Seeing

yourself on tv or in the theatre gives you a buzz.”

Derek met his wife Karen at a wedding 40 years ago. They were both part of the bridal party. A few years later, they became husband and wife. Derek doesn’t think that he could have got through life without her.

After doing some reptile shows to help a mate out and then later managing a zoo, the opportunity arose for Derek to start their own touring show called Croc Stars. They had snakes, turtles, crocodiles, and lizards. Karen knew nothing about reptiles but learnt quickly, and Derek had found an outlet for his acting. The duo owned Croc

Stars for sixteen years and did thousands upon thousands of shows. Several times they had even bought the show to Hervey Bay. They loved the area, so moved here in 2016.

Derek’s life came crashing down three years ago when his mum passed away.

“I was in the hospital with a major blood clot. The doctors didn’t think I would make it. While I was in the hospital, my mother was in the hospital too.

“Apparently, mum tried to talk to me before she died, but I was unconscious, and unfortunately, mum passed away before I got to speak to her.

The doctors do not know why I got the clot. So, I

am on permanent blood thinners, which have their own unpleasant side effects.

“Since mum died, my mental health has declined. I have since been diagnosed with Major Chronic Depressive Disorder. Every day is hard. It doesn’t mean I don’t want to do things, but whether I carry them out is another thing. I also suffer from anxiety at times too.”

Derek ventures out when he can and volunteers for the 9th Battalion Ceremonial Guard with Karen, which they both find very rewarding. When Derek was in his late teens, he was in the army reserves for four years and is very proud of that fact.

Davis steps into president’s role

FOOTBALL: The KSS Jets are under the leadership of a new flight leader this season, with Gena Davis stepping into the role of president.

Formerly the vice president, she moves up to replace Josh Hobbs.

Lions sighted on the Fraser Coast

AFL: The Brisbane Lions are the latest professional sporting code to visit the Fraser Coast, with players Josh Dunkley, Jaxon Prior, Harry Sharp, and James Tunstill spending the last two days in the region.

They join the Queensland Reds and Brisbane Roar, who have visited the region over the past few months.

The players engaged with schools, community, and community groups during their short stay on the Fraser Coast.

After flying in last Monday morning, they attended local schools in the region before holding a community clinic at Seafront Oval in the afternoon. The players then sat with

local club volunteers for dinner at the Hervey Bay RSL.

After waking up the following morning, the players joined the Men’s Walk and Talk Hervey Bay group for a walk along the Hervey Bay foreshore before returning for further school visits.

Lions off-season signing and Bulldogs premiership player Josh Dunkley believes these visits are important for regional centres.

“We look forward to getting out there to the wider community, and it is great to see so many people supporting the game and loving AFL football,” Dunkley said. He believes the best part of

playing football is being out there with your mates.

“To run out with 18 people on the weekend is the best fun during your week, and to be able to do that is special.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour agrees, believing these visits are essential for encouraging kids to participate in sports.

“For kids to see their heroes up close is very important for keeping them engaged in sports,” Seymour said.

After their visit, the Lions returned home to Brisbane to prepare for the upcoming AFL season with their first game against the Port Adelaide Power.

She stopped to have a chat after playing a pre-season trial against Doon Villa.

Davis wears many hats at the club, including FQPL player and junior coach.

After a couple of months in the role, Davis is enjoying the added responsibility.

“It’s been going well, and we have a lot of new players joining the club. Numbers are looking good, and we will be very strong,” Davis said.

She admits her biggest challenge has been finding her feet in the new role but was full of praise for the club’s committee.

“Our committee is amazing, and they have many skills, and everyone is willing to put their hand up to help,” she said.

The club has set goals to add referees to the Wide Bay and increase female

participation.

“We have girls coming in, and they just want to have a kick, and we just support them,”

She encourages anyone wanting to have a game this

year, either juniors or seniors, to call the club or come down and chat.
