ANOTHER year of publishing is over for the Hervey Bay Advertiser. This will be our last issue until we return on January 12th.

What a year it has been.

On a personal note, I celebrated twenty years this year as an independent newspaper owner with the help of an amazingly dedicated team. Life in the newspaper game took a right angle turn mid-year when a global shortage of paper forced a 50% increase in the cost of newsprint stock.

Fortunately, we escaped the worst of that, and our stable valued advertising clients supported us through this challenging period.

Please think ahead

Following the last letter I sent to you, I have received some interesting comments about the need for a worthwhile performing arts centre in Hervey Bay.

It seems that the official comment surrounds the fact that in Maryborough there is the Brolga Theatre.

That is so, and it does provide good facilities in Maryborough, but that is not Hervey Bay where there is a large population of people who either can’t or don’t want to travel at night to the

southern theatre.

No consideration is being given to the elderly who have the time and will to attend performances or to the young who have no transport ability to travel that far.

There is no regular public transport at night when most performances are held.

An enhancement for Hervey Bay would be the building of a convention centre capable of being used as a multi-purpose venue.

As a destination for conventions, Hervey Bay is a most desirable venue. And, I will repeat, we have a very good quality and active

performing arts sector in this city, but they cannot perform in a quality venue in Hervey Bay. Civic leaders, please think ahead, not in the past!

As much as it annoys plenty of folks when others put up decorations and lights before 1st Dec, I however love doing it early and usually in November when the urge comes knocking.

Being a part of the community and giving back to local charity, sporting and not-for-profit groups is something we are very focused on, and we have achieved a lot in that space this year. Our readers have also engaged with us in a far greater way over the course of 2022, with a high increase in our Letters to the Editor contributions and social media comments. Producing engaging content is invaluable to the reader experience, and we are always searching for new initiatives to generate discussion.

Close to 600,000 copies of the Advertiser were printed this year, with more than 2,500 pages of content.

We made the decision a long time ago to only use recycled newspaper, and our printing partners at News Corp participate in a vigorous planet first program.

We have many goals for the new year, including a new interactive online reading platform and regular daily updates to our web content.

Most of all however, we will be making sure we stay true to our philosophy of reporting the good news that happens in our community.

Hervey Bay is an amazing place to live and work, and it is a privilege to spread that word every fortnight.

To all of our valued readers and advertisers, have a great Christmas, and we will see you next year.

Putting Pitt in his place

On the issue of insufficient specialist services in Hervey Bay, particularly cardiac specialists, Mr Pitt says, “…it’s time the Labor Government acted by

implementing a basic change to the way exemptions are granted for specialists to be approved to work in regional areas.”

One would think that this issue has only arisen in the past six months.

Surely Mr Pitt could and should have raised his concerns with the Health Minister while he was still in government or even with the other secret squirrel Health Minister.

The shortage of specialist services in this area isn’t new.

The only thing new is Mr Pitt’s need to find an issue to latch onto and take focus

away from the previous government’s ineptitude on this and many other fronts.

Super Sleepbus

I wish to congratulate everyone associated with the recent approval for the Sleepbus to be introduced to Hervey Bay as per the article in your newspaper 1st December, 2022.

Homeless numbers are only growing and there are no signs this will reduce in the future as there is a shortage of housing and no indication this problem

will improve.

The homeless is a problem we ignored for too long and we must consider many solutions as there will not be one initiative that fixes this.

I congratulate Cr Jade Wellings in her persistent efforts in addressing the homeless issue and putting forward options that wont please everyone. We cant be critical of ideas without providing an alternative and I cannot help thinking this is

so true when people want to attack her proposal of using caravans as part of the overall conclusion.

I understand Sleepbus has been introduced in many cities across Australia and more recently Maroochydore. Nobody suggests this is the answer to the overall problem, but this gives 20 people a safe and secure sleeping quarters that typically is unavailable to them. A few more initiatives like this and we are definitely

improving our lifestyle that we acknowledge just how lucky we are.

I see the Community Bank Hervey Bay has funded this project which is wonderful to see and we should recognise a local business giving back to the community that supports them. I hope the sleepbus is sustainable in our community and that we embrace this as a caring community should.

School holiday recycling centre tours offered

FRASER Coast residents wanting to learn more about what happens to what goes in their yellow recycling bin can sign up for a free tour of the region’s recycling centre in January.

Cr David Lee said more than 11,000 tonnes of material was collected from kerbside recycling bins on the Fraser Coast in 2021/22.

“The tours of the Material Recovery Facility (Recycling Centre) will give residents a better understanding of what they can put in their recycling bin and where it ends up,” he said.

“On the tour, residents will learn some tips and tricks to make recycling easier at home and to help cut contamination.

“Items like glass jars, paper, steel and aluminium cans can go in your yellow recycling bin. Council has an A – Z Recycling Guide on its website with the complete list.

“Putting the wrong thing in the recycling bin could spoil a truckload of recycling which then has to go to landfill.”

Cr Lee said free tours offered during National Recycling Week last month had proven extremely popular and the upcoming tours were being scheduled for the school holidays to allow both adults and school aged children to attend.

“Recycling is good for the environment, good for the economy and good for the local community,” he said.

“The top three recycling rules to remember are – take the lids off jars and bottles, rinse your containers and never bag it.”

The free tours of the Material Recovery Facility in Dundowran will run on 17, 18 and 19 January 2023 from 10am to 11.30am each day.

Bookings for the tours are essential as places are limited, and attendees must wear closed-in shoes.

New e-scooter hire business coming to Hervey Bay

FRASER Coast residents and visitors will be able to continue to rent e-scooters for short trips around Hervey Bay with Council set to provide Beam Mobility with a 12-month commercial permit.

Cr Daniel Sanderson said e-scooters had proven to be a popular mode of transport during an initial trial in Hervey Bay, particularly for 18 to 24 year old residents travelling to and from work.

“E-scooters offer a low cost, environmentally friendly transport alternative and also lead to a reduction in traffic,” he said.

“In July 2021, Council approved an application from international share-ride company Bird for a trial of a commercial e-scooter service in Hervey Bay.

“The trial saw more than 50,000 rides taken in the first six months and provided a

boost to the local economy, with many residents and visitors trying and enjoying using the scooters.

“Council recently called for interested companies to submit an expression of interest for an e-scooter hire commercial permit on the Fraser Coast, taking into account feedback we received during the trial on issues such as rider behaviour, parking and the use of helmets.

“To ensure acceptable public health and safety standards are met, Council decided to allow one commercial permit for shared e-scooters for up to 250 devices in Hervey Bay.

“The tender evaluation panel has recommended Beam Mobility as the preferred operator as they were assessed as the most capable of addressing community concerns. The commercial permit will be valid for 12 months, with the potential for

two one-year extensions upon review.”

The e-scooters are managed through computer programming and are “geofenced”, which ensures the devices are speed limited and cannot be taken outside of the designated areas.

Commercial e-scooters for hire will be limited to Hervey Bay at this stage, with the Bird trial to cease and Beam Mobility to start operating instead within weeks. Council will work with Beam to consider a potential trial in Maryborough in the future.

New Queensland Government laws around e-scooter use took effect on 1 November, which provide for lower speeds on footpaths, increased fines for dangerous offences and mandated bells in addition to helmets and lights. More details are available at www.qld.gov.au/streetsmarts

Builder for Hervey Bay City Centre development

A NATIONAL construction company that has developed major government, commercial, health, retail and entertainment projects will be appointed as the building contractor for the next stage of the new Hervey Bay Library and Fraser Coast Regional Council Administration Centre.

Cr Denis Chapman said the Australian Government was partnering with Council through the Hinkler Regional Deal to build a vibrant community hub in the heart of Hervey Bay.

“This is a once in a generation opportunity to reshape the Hervey Bay City Centre, to create jobs and drive economic growth and investment,” he said.

“The appointment of Hansen Yuncken as the building contractor is an important step in the delivery of this project, with detailed design underway now and construction expected

to start next year and be completed in 2025.”

Cr David Lewis said the building would include an expanded library over two levels, a new public plaza, and flexible spaces that could be booked for meetings or events both day and night.

“The new Library and Council Administration Centre will be a place to support learning and innovation, and a place where the community can come together to socialize and benefit from centralised Council services,” he said.

“More than three quarters of this development will be dedicated to community space.

Cr Zane O’Keefe said Hansen Yuncken had a strong track record of delivering major projects, such as the Hervey Bay Hospital Emergency Department redevelopment and the University of Sunshine Coast Moreton Bay Foundation building.

and Council Administration Centre (incorporating a Disaster Resilience Centre) is a commitment under the Hinkler Regional Deal.

The project is estimated to cost around $100 million, and is funded by a $40 million

Australian Government commitment through the Community Development Grants Programme, Council’s general revenue, land sales and borrowings.

New Strategic Housing Issues Paper released

LOCAL law changes

for caravans in backyards, providing incentives for renting to vulnerable people and investigating options for shared accommodation are just some of the recommendations made in the updated Strategic Housing Issues Paper.

Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre has partnered with a host of local service providers to produce version two of the Strategic Housing Issues Paper, which aims to identify and offer solutions to housing and homelessness issues in the region.

said.

“Housing and homelessness services in both the Fraser Coast and Bundaberg Regional Council areas have significant concerns regarding the current lack of affordable housing and increasing cases of homelessness across the Wide Bay Burnett region,” Tanya said.

“It is envisaged that homelessness will continue to escalate for the Wide Bay, impacting on our economic opportunities, unless multiple strategies are implemented to provide a variety of housing options.

New eco burial option to start 2023

FRASER

will now be able to opt for a natural burial at the new Nikenbah Natural Cemetery.

A natural burial is a funeral that seeks to make as little impact upon the environment as possible and to return a body to the earth in as natural a way as possible.

At its November meeting, Fraser Coast Regional Council adopted an updated Cemeteries policy to include guidelines around Natural Burials.

Mayor George Seymour said the facility would be ready to accept burials in early 2023.

“This new burial option is a

result of community requests,” he said.

“While natural burials were not an option previously, the updated policy now allows for the natural burial cemetery on the Fraser Coast.”

The Nikenbah location was identified as the most suitable option for the new cemetery due to soil composition and the natural vegetation at the rear of the site.

“While we are not yet selling plots at the facility, people can contact Council customer service to put their name down on a register of interest,” Cr Seymour said.

A natural burial must be prepared without chemical preservatives (that is, it must not be embalmed), and must be contained within a 100% biodegradable coffin, or shroud.

Coffins, caskets and fittings must be made of cardboard, wicker, seagrass, bamboo, sustainably grown, and untreated timber, or other materials that facilitate rapid biodegradability.

Shrouds must be made of natural fibres such as wool, silk, bamboo, hemp, linen or cotton.

Ashes must be contained in a 100% biodegradable container.

Fraser Coast pools to open longer in school holidays

THE HERVEY Bay and Maryborough Aquatic Centres will be open for longer on weekends and WetSide Water Park will be open seven days a week during the Queensland state school holidays.

Fraser Coast Regional Council Director Development and Community Gerard Carlyon said more staff would be available to work at Council’s aquatic facilities over the summer school holidays.

“A shortage of lifeguards has meant our two pools have been closing at noon on weekends, and the water slides and Aqua Ninja course have been operating half a day each day on the weekends,” he said.

“With the Learn to Swim classes pausing over the school holidays, we will have more staff available, while we also have new lifeguards coming on board following our successful

‘Try Then Apply Day’ recruitment drive.

“The new recruits all require training though and it will be some time before they can move up from being entry level lifeguards to supervisors, which means we may need to revert to reduced hours again after the school holidays.”

Mr Carlyon said Aqua Ninja had proven popular since opening at the start of the month, and Council was looking forward to the new attraction opening longer over the school holidays.

“The Aqua Ninja course is the first of its kind in Australia and it’s fantastic to see how it has been embraced in its first month of operation with 726 rides taken so far, which will only increase as we open for more hours,” he said.

THE GOODS Wheel, or as many like to call it ‘The Ambulance Wheel’, will return again for this year’s Christmas Festivities. The event will run for two weeks from Saturday 17th December to Sunday 1st January 2023 (excluding Christmas Day) at The Stage on the Scarness foreshore.

The Hervey Bay Local Ambulance Committee (LAC) continues a tradition that has been providing families much joy for almost 70 years. Locals and visiting families on holidays have congregated on the Scarness Foreshore for decades. The Hervey Bay Goods Wheel stands as one of the last public operating wheels in Australia.

The pandemics interrupted

the annual event in 2020 and last year had social distancing practices in place. This year chairs and blankets are encouraged.

Jo-Anne from the LAC said the funds raised would go towards very importance equipment for the local Ambulances. This year they have purchased Raizer Lift Chairs that help get patients off the floor.

“Our paramedics have such physically demanding roles that any help we can provide is important. Getting patients off the floor can be very challenging and this equipment has put the patient’s comfortability a priority.”

Lift Chairs has been very well received by Ambulance staff with the region having a high number of multi-storey complexes. The LAC aim is to purchase more specialised equipment which will provide safer support for patients and staff members.

The Ambulance Wheel is for all ages with tickets remaining are 50c each.

The winning ticket holders can choose their own prize from the huge range on display. They are aiming for approximately 30 spins each night, with prizes to suit everyone.

It starts Saturday 17th December at 7pm with a special visit from Santa Clause on Christmas Eve.

Australiana comes to life at Pialba Plaza Mural

PIALBA Plaza’s playground has come to life with a background that replicates a unique outback experience, as well as the more familiar scenery of K’Gari Island and Fraser Coast waters.

The artist responsible for this colourful addition is Paul Petterson.

Mr Petterson is a well know local artist that is responsible for many known local creations including the mural at the Hervey Bay Information Centre.

Mr Petterson was contacted by the Pialba Plaza centre management and commissions to bring a 70-meter wall to life.

With the aim to provide children with a colourful

environment that reflects the different Australian environments and our wildlife.

After some convincing from his wife that he could achieve this enormous project, his connection to nature had the chance to be projected on the biggest screen available.

“I love the Australian landscape. I love the diversity of what our country offers. In particular, Fraser Island is a special place to me,” Mr Petterson said.

After 250 hours over a ten-week period, 160 square metres of the wall has been transformed to take you to many Australian destinations.

The mountain ranges, rock walls, island coastlines and wildlife commonly associated

with this nation.

This new addition provides a background for children that connects with their imagination.

Mr Petterson also invited popular Butchulla artist Aaron Henderson to include Indigenous artwork and storytelling that adds the local heritage to this iconic wall.

“Aaron has something very special and significant to our land,” Mr Petterson said.

Paul has lived in Hervey Bay since 1990, and his experiences have made him appreciate the diversity and colour of our region.

“I wanted the children to see what is in our backyard once you explore it.”

“There is so much to choose from,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said.

“Choose a haircut, a night out at a hotel or club, a book to read over the holidays, bling, a spa session or a visit to the Chiropractor.

“It doesn’t matter who you are buying for; picky aunts and uncles or the grandkids, there is something for everyone.”

Fraser Coast Gift Cards are the cornerstone of Council’s Open for Business Buy Local campaign, which was introduced in response to COVID-19, Mayor George Seymour said.

“Buying local is the best way for people to support Fraser Coast businesses, it’s great for local jobs and great for our local communities,” he said.

“Every $100 spent locally provides at least a $180 benefit to the local economy through the multiplier effect

which is why we’re urging everyone to get behind this campaign and support local businesses.”

Businesses from Tiaro, Maryborough and Hervey Bay are involved in the program.

The card has lured some shoppers into Fishos’ Tackle World.

“We support any program that encourages locals to shop locally,” Fisho’s Tackle World manager Dane Radosevic said.

“Keeping money in our local economy helps create jobs to keep locals employed.

The gift card program, which has been running since December 2020, encourages residents and visitors to shop locally to help build a stronger united Fraser Coast business community.

“We’d love even more local

businesses to get involved,” Cr Seymour said.

Brisbane Bullets Summer Camp for Basketballers

FRASER Coast basketballers will have access to professional coaching and skill’s development when the Brisbane Bullets host a Summer Camp in Hervey Bay in January.

Hervey Bay Basketball President Matt Baker said the camp, taking place on Sunday 15th January 2023, would cater for players aged five (5) to adults and all levels of experience.

Mr Baker said he was excited to have the Brisbane Bullets visiting the region and

players could look forward to developing new skills on the court while meeting new friends.

“This exciting summer camp comes on the back of recent news of funding for a new stadium from Fraser Coast Regional Council, which is expected to start construction mid to late next year.

Car salesman, personal banker, COVID clinic administrator, employment sector business development officer, DJ, Dad – it’s as though the 32-year-old’s varied career and experiences were all preparing him for the moment he walked through the doors of Jobs Fraser Coast in April this year.

Jobs Fraser Coast is funded by the Queensland Government to support and develop a skilled, sustainable workforce for the region, and Jared – as its project officer –is the man tasked with much of that weighty responsibility.

“In the employment sector, it’s great when you can fill a vacancy – but it may not always be long lasting,” Jared said.

“Here, I’m getting the

chance to make a longer-term difference on a bigger scale and actually build something.”

With the support of the Fraser Coast Regional Jobs Committee, Jared has been the driving force behind a number of initiatives that are starting to pay dividends and create real and steady changes in the local employment landscape.

One of these is the Fraser Coast Jobs Commitment, which connects secondary students to local job and training opportunities through presentations and onsite industry tours.

“Making an impact at local schools has been a massive thing for me,” Jared said.

“We’ve been able to connect quite a number of students to jobs and apprenticeships.”

The marquee event that Jared has really been able to hang his hat on, is the recent

Fraser Coast industry & Careers Showcase, which is now planned to be an annual affair.

Held at the Maryborough Showgrounds in October, it brought together more than 80 businesses and support organisations with well over 2,000 students and jobseekers, and had one clear goal – to get people of all ages into a job or on a pathway to a career.

Outside of major events and initiatives, you can find Jared all about town, whether he’s helping to link local jobs programs with suitable employers, networking, leading school tours – or, outside work, spinning the decks under the guise of DJ Crooksy.

“I call it the many hats of Jared!” he says with a laugh.

“But I wouldn’t have it any other way.“

NEW Fraser Coast library cards

by local children who entered the Design a Library Card Competition will be available next year following the announcement of the finalists and winners this week.

Mayor George Seymour congratulated Luca Baker, Harpah Mitchell and Matthew Boulton on their winning designs in the 0-5 years, 6-12 years and 13-17 years age categories respectively.

“We love encouraging the creativity of youngsters in our community and were delighted to have more than 135 entries in the competition,” Cr Seymour said.

“We were also happy to involve the wider community in choosing the winners with more than 415 votes cast by the public to choose the finalists in the three age categories.”

Cr Seymour said the finalists included Skye Sullivan and Poppy Hunt-Morris in the 0-5 years age category;

Taylor Berthelsen and Amelia Nesterowich in 6-12 years; and Taelah Rowe and Jaguar Welch in 13-17 years.

A presentation ceremony was held at Hervey Bay Library on Monday, November 28, where the Mayor presented finalists with certificates and the winners also received $50

gift cards.

“Thanks to everyone who took the time to create a design and enter the competition,” Cr Seymour said.

“The new cards are being ordered and will be available at all five Fraser Coast Libraries

branches in Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro, Howard and Burrum Heads next year.”

Fraser Coast Libraries receives financial assistance from the Queensland Government through the State Library of Queensland.

THIS is a question FCPIA is constantly being asked. Who are the inspiring leaders in Hervey Bay looking at the big projects for our future growth? Who is fighting for better facilities and infrastructure?

Over recent months this question is getting louder as our leaders get quieter. The question keeps being asked as it appears Hervey Bay is lacking infrastructure direction and passionate leadership who are fighting for our future. It is feeling like average is acceptable and “don’t rock the boat” is the main agenda.

Our political leaders appear to be more interested in their social media accounts and their likeability these days, rather than being passionate about big projects or making tough financial decisions.

When someone tries to do something inspirational with projects like the sports precinct or the council chambers, social media critics and fellow politicians seem to focus all

their energies trying to pull the idea down for their own gain and the community’s loss.

FCPIA is one group that doesn’t want to stand on the sidelines and wants to work for a better Hervey Bay. Our professional members spend hundreds of hours of volunteered time meeting with government departments trying to make sure Hervey Bay’s infrastructure, planning and spending is going to help create a better future in line with our increasing population.

Recently we had another community blow with the loss of the State touch football event. Maybe this is because Council was working in silos and not involving the broader business community in securing this event.

This appears to be in sharp contrast to Maryborough over the years. Maryborough has strong community spirit and fights as a united group for projects and funding, and punches well above its

weight as a city of its size.

On the other hand, Hervey Bay still seems to have the small-town mentality. Our leadership is not stepping up and fighting for big ticket items like convention centres, sports facilities, better health services, roads and infrastructure, and events to match our population growth.

We are just not working cohesively as a city and our leaders are not passionately fighting for better city outcomes. This doesn’t stop with the politicians. It goes for business leaders, community leaders and organisations as well.

We challenge more groups to step up, be vocal and work towards better outcomes and become passionate about big projects. It’s time we showed leadership as a city to match our population size.

Hervey Bay’s love story of a lifetime

ALBY and Agnes Thurland of Urangan will celebrate their 70th Wedding Anniversary together in January, and what a life they have lived.

Agnes turns 90 years of age on January 2nd and Alby turns 91, the very next day.

As I was privileged to find out during my chat with them, this is a love story forged on family, hard work and respect, spanning almost 80 years.

To understand this story, we have to go way back, prior to the second World War.

Alby and Agnes came from two very different family backgrounds.

Agnes was raised in a very tight knit traditional family home, Alby was raised by his father, from the age of five.

Alby had one brother and two sisters, and as was the way of the times, his clothes were all hand-me-downs.

This was never more apparent than the day he ventured into town from the fields on which they lived, with a gaping hole in his backside.

The destination was a church youth club.

The year was 1944 and this was the very first time he saw Agnes as he proceeded to walk around with his back to the wall, to save her from seeing his bum sticking out.

Agnes noticed Alby too and it wasn’t long before a smile and a wave turned to a conversation.

It was not long after that Alby was convinced, he was going to marry Agnes and duly asked her the same.

“I told him he was getting too serious, we were just kids, not even 16. I said, come back in five years and we can talk about it then,” Agnes

“I was working twelve-hour days and just not getting ahead in life so I told Agnes I wanted to move our family to Australia and start a new life. I hitchhiked across London to the Australian Embassy to put my case forward. They gave us 22 days to sell everything and be ready to go.”

Those who came to Australia under this scheme are best known as the Tenpound

in Brisbane’s notorious Boggo Road Jail.

“One year, not that long after we had been in Australia, we took a holiday road trip up north and happened upon Hervey Bay. I remember how much of a beautiful place it was and I caught a great fish off the pier.”

“We knew then that this would be the place that we would retire.”

Family road trips were something that Agnes and Alby did often.

“We knew there were a lot of places in Tasmania that had been named after old places in England so we decided to take the long trek down there in the old Holden and cross Bass Strait on the ferry to get there,” Alby said.

“As we were driving around, we stopped in at a local pub that shared the same name as my dad’s local watering hole in England, so we couldn’t pass it by.”

This is where fate stepped in.

“When I went inside, there sitting at the bar, was my brother that I had not seen for twenty-four years. It was like a day had not passed; just incredible.”

Agnes and Alby eventually settled in Hervey Bay to retire.

With that, Alby went off to war.

Over time Alby was discharged and ever the one to seize an opportunity, he went straight to Agnes, in uniform and crutches, which I am told was equal parts necessity and for the sympathetic effect.

The day before Agnes turned 20, they were married.

“Around this time, my brother had decided to leave England to come to Australia and I lost

When asked about the secret to a long and happy life together, particularly as they head towards their 70th Wedding Anniversary together in January, their answer was simple.

“Just have love and respect for each other. Support each other even when you don’t agree and never go to sleep on an argument that isn’t settled.”

Mark Wilson Born to sing

MARK Wilson has a caring nature and, in his thirties, decided to leave the world of banking and brokerage behind to become a teacher.

With a mortgage, a wife and four kids, he hit the books and went to university full-time to make his dream come true.

“I love helping kids with special needs in the athletic arena. I currently teach at Maryborough Special School,” said Mark.

Mark was born at the Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital in 1972 and two years later was adopted and taken to New South Wales, where he grew up in a childhood that was far from idyllic.

There were many dark times to overcome, but there were also some beautiful moments too. Mark met his wife Colleen when they were both teenagers, and they have been together ever since.

In fact, the couple have recently celebrated their twenty-ninth wedding anniversary.

Mark’s passion has always been singing and performing. He would have loved to become a full-time performer. His accomplishments are not to be sneezed at, having won the World Karaoke Championship in Finland in 2006 and appearing on Australia’s The 100 back in

2019.

Mark said, “My grandmother would always encourage me to sing. There are tape recordings of my voice from as young as four years old. I have the tapes now, and I am incredibly grateful for them.

“Music is a great healer and gives me a place to escape. Music also enables me to be the real me in every way, shape, and form. I feel very much connected to music, and in many ways, it has been my saviour.”

Musically, Mark’s biggest fear was the fear of failure.

“The fear of failure has always been a personal demon of mine. But you shouldn’t let

fear stop you from living your dreams. Our dreams are real and deserve to be recognised.

“I was always afraid that I would let people down. I would live in constant doubt about my abilities and overthink things. But the whole experience was amazing. I would never have thought I would win the world title; it never even entered my mind,” said Mark.

With his wife, Colleen, by his side helping to weather any storm, this duo can do anything. They have four kids as well as four gorgeous grandkids that Mark is incredibly proud of. Mark

credits Colleen for helping him to become who he is today. His immediate family have also taught him how to love.

“Because of my past, I think that I have always struggled with the trusting and loving part of a relationship. My family have given me that, and I am so grateful to them,” said Mark.

“People often see me as the joker of the group, the class clown; I don’t know if people truly know the real me. The only ones who know me inside out are those in my small circle.”

His advice to children who are experiencing identity issues

or struggling with life is never to give up.

Allow yourself to laugh and to cry, to feel the emotions. But never let these emotions stop you from living life and achieving the things that you wish.

One day, Mark would like to write an autobiography or have someone else write a biography about his life with its many twists and turns. The good, the bad and the ugly.

For the first time in a long time, Mark feels ok about himself and who he is. He is ready to tell his story.

Cycling Schoff brothers not slowing down

CYCLING: It has been a busy few weeks for cycling brothers Harry and Oscar Schoff, who have travelled the region competing in different events.

In November, competing at the Anna Mears Velodrome, Harry riding with Tom Loadsman from the Balmoral club, claimed third place in the 160 state Madison race as he competed in the A and B track series.

Oscar travelled to Bundaberg to compete in the Bundaberg Cycling Spectacular, securing a few podiums in the under-15 races while racing off scratch.

Harry was then named to the 2023 Scody Racing Balmoral junior elite team to race in a team environment around southeast Queensland next year.

“It will be a great experience and education, and I hope to gain valuable knowledge and hopefully post some good results by the end of the year,” Harry said.

They returned to local Fraser Coast racing on the weekend to compete in the Wide Bay Toyota Crit series racing in the fourth race, with Harry finishing second behind series

race.

Preparation is now underway for Oscar, who will attend the Anna Meares Velodrome in Brisbane for the state titles before heading to Melbourne for Australian Junior Track Series races.

Harry is focused on training over the next few weeks as

he prepares for the national championships in Ballarat, Victoria, to be held between January 4-7.

“It will be interesting to see how I go training over the Christmas period, but I am ready to give the nationals a good shot,” he said.

It is shaping into a busy and successful 2023 for our two rising cycling stars.
