I love Christmas. So long as it’s December first
I CELEBRATED my 50th lap around the sun this year and I have to admit, I love Christmas now, possibly more than any other time in my life.
I started a little ‘tit for tat’ with my neighbour last year with Christmas lights. He’d put up more, and I would return serve.
He eventually played a winning move, by getting his kids to hold up a sign that said ‘honk for the lights’, and can I say, his kids can stay up late.
Well played sir.
I duly hatched plans to go one better and much to the aggravation of my dear wife, I have been acquiring Christmas lights since Boxing
Day of last year, to enter this year’s ‘Light up the Fraser Coast’ Christmas Lights Trail.
I certainly don’t expect to be winning anything, but I am shooting for the ‘you’ll be able to see our house from space’ look.
Volume over substance could possibly be the best artistic expressional explanation.
There is one rule however, nothing before December 1st, under any circumstances.
Christmas decorations started going up in stores and shopping centres in early October and I have noticed a lot of people lighting up their houses and yards, well before December 1st.

Bay ideal for a convention centre
Your editorial on Nov 3 about the Brolga Theatre was spot on. I’ve been saying the same thing for years.
The district has been crying out for a new entertainment/ convention centre to accommodate the big acts. International and Australian performers.
Hervey Bay, with its growing population, is now the ideal location to host this centre.
My suggestion of position for the entertainment/convention centre is the council owned old pie hotel site Hillyard St, Pialba,
just off Main St. Would be an ideal site making it once again the real CBD of HB. With the new proposed council chamber virtually across the road would be great for the business hub.
A showcase of construction 5-6 story resort style development offering million dollar views of all the bay and surrounds would be an ideal international credit to the whole Fraser Coast, Qld and Australia.
Imagine this facility with commanding views with an outside BBQ beer garden, large auditorium for all sort of shows with added cocktail and piano bar. Also, restaurants, gift shops, specialty stores and
coffee shops and board rooms for seminars and meetings. Up above 5 star accommodation for those who want to stay and play or those on work seminars. A great option for all local around our district to book weddings, 21st, and all special occasions celebrated in a magnificent location at a reasonable price.
I truly believe this is an achievable proposal considering this site is available already. A positive approach by council could make it great. What a boost for the district and of course the local economy.

Brolga Theatre

Hi my name is Chris and I totally agree with you regarding the Brolga theatre.
I love going to live shows and the theatre, but we miss out on so much here in the bay.
I have been many times to Maryborough but the drive is horrendous, and as there is no public transport after six that is the only way to get there.
Conventions are huge money that we are all missing out on; look at the convention centre in Cairns. It is magnificent.
I can’t imagine any big companies thinking that Maryborough would be a much
irritates my rather defined sense of order and routine.
December is the month for everything Christmas.
RSL Carols by Candlelight, Christmas lights and Santa at the shops. At the risk of channelling the Grinch, November is simply not a Christmas month.
I was told by a friend the other day that the only rule is that there is no rule when it comes to Christmas. Perhaps it’s not an argument even worth having?

With respect to you Cheryl, you paint a very sweet and pleasant picture of the interactions you and your dogs have with others ... and I’m happy that you’ve never felt threatened or unsafe at any time ... however, for those who have - I can assure it’s a traumatising situation to find yourself in, and it’s obvious that Mr Grimsley at some stage has experienced this.

myself, would appreciate the opportunity to go the beach and not have himself or his dog feel threatened or approached by others.
The ‘boisterous, and energetic’ ones (as you so aptly put it), are at times the very problem -allowed to run at a dog whose temperament is unknown to them - dogs who may be reactive, anxious and not wanting any interaction. Respect others and their need for space. It’s not that difficult!
Being on an unleashed beach does not entitle anyone to simply let their dog loose to harass others who wish to be left alone.
It may potentially be an innocent interaction ... with disastrous results.
So maybe you should take a moment to try to understand another side to the story.
While I allow my dog off leash, and knowing he ‘needs his space’, I avoid any potential confrontation by immediately leashing him when another dog approaches and giving ample room until they have walked past each other, and then he is taken off the leash again.
It’s a pity other dog owners didn’t do the same.
My dog is not vicious nor aggressive and has never attacked another HOWEVER ... he has been attacked twice on the unleashed beach, sustaining facial and other injuries,
including a tom ear, requiring Veterinary treatment resulting in approximately $400 worth of expenses ... and Council did nothing!
The most recent incident was a pack of four dogs who were approaching me, playing rough with each other as they walked along the beach and with their owners.
I instantly leashed my dog and attempted to avoid a potential incident by giving a wide berth and allowing generous room to pass without incident, but the dogs pursued me and crowded my dog. The larger dog snapped at my dog’s face twice, causing my dog to react, before the owner came over and restrained him.
And the owners answer? “I’m so sorry .. .! didn’t think he’d ever do that to another dog,” which heightens the need for dogs to be leashed or, at bestcontrolled when other dogs are simply trying to walk by or be avoided.
You just don’t know the other dogs’ history.
Do I want to see leash free areas abolished? Absolutely not ... but stricter controls and consequences need to be enacted so everyone gets to enjoy their time at the beach.
To be able to access these beautiful unleashed beaches in our area is a privilege - not a right. and respecting others ‘space at the beach’ - is just common courtesy.
Only when everyone abides by the common sense rules without feeling entitled, then maybe everyone can have the opportunity to feel safe, and the threat of eradicating the off leash areas can be avoided.

Poor health system experience
My recent experience with our health system is not a good one, I’m afraid. While I was able to get an appointment with my doctor on 20 September 2022 without any delays he asked me if I would like to use the ‘Public’ system or the ‘Private’ system.
The private system being the faster option. Being a selffunded retiree, I said I would pay extra for the private system for quicker service. Well, was I wrong!!
The MRI Scan at a Hervey Bay Radiologist was a 6 week wait. The Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist in Bundaberg, I was referred to, has a 6 month waiting period!!
I would certainly hate to be waiting to see someone in the ‘Public’ system!
Our Cities of Maryborough, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay have definitely grown faster than our health system can cope with.

A hole new ball game
START practicing your swing golf gurus because the region’s best mini golf course is set to open soon, and will look epic!
The announcement came as the Mini Golf Hervey Bay Facebook page was launched recently, highlighting the start to Stage 1 of the project being built by the Hervey Bay RSL on the corner of Bideford and Truro Streets in Torquay.
It was clear by the hundreds of positive comments and shares on the Facebook page that the course is set to fill a void in the region when it comes to entertainment for locals and tourists alike.
Hervey Bay RSL CEO Jason Lynch said that was always the intention for the long-awaited project.
He said the 2500sqm course
was modelled off the very popular Maroochy River Mini Golf at Bli Bli and will feature an additional 800sqm reception area, licensed café and space for a whole lot of family fun.
The shaded 18-hole course will have the added challenge of a creek running through the course, landscaped humps and hollows, water features, sand traps and lights for night games.
The mini golf will be open seven days a week.
“Seeing the excavators break ground on the site this week means that the development is now in full swing,” Mr Lynch said.
“Our vision was to bring an attraction to Hervey Bay that gives families and businesses
something different to do in the region, and I believe the mini golf will definitely fill that void.
“It’s not just about tourism. It’s also about giving businesses somewhere different to hold corporate events and functions, and we’ll have an area for children’s parties too.
“There will also be special ‘pro’ days where putt-putt enthusiasts can bring their own putter to play.”
Mini Golf Hervey Bay is expected to open in mid-2023.
Stage two of the development will see 14 townhouses built and Stage three will include a 32-bed motel.

Rubbish Art cleans up big in prizes
YEARS of collecting washed up ocean rubbish from around Australia and a creative eye has proved profitable for Heather Johnston at this year’s Fraser Coast Waste to Art competition.
Ms Johnston took the top spot of Category 1 (Over 18) at the competition with her 2.5m fish sculpture, ‘Marine Debris Debi’.
After spending much of the year caring for her mother who passed away four weeks ago, Heather returned to create the art in just three weeks.
“I was waking up at 5am in the morning to work on it, sewing and moulding the chicken wire,” she said.
Ms Johnston who usually works with water colours said Debi was a passion project.
Category 2 (12-17 years) was won by friends Tilly Stewart and Alyssa Rose.
Their work ‘Deforestation a Losing Battle’ was created at school with the materials sourced from home and opportunity shops.
Coined by the girls as Garry the Gullah, their sculpture is composed of half metal and half paper materials. Despite this being the first work that the pair created together, they
said they worked well with no arguments.
Tilly said it was important for people to rethink waste and how to minimise their environmental footprint.
“I think it is very important for young people around the world to think about their environmental impact as we face climate change and our world is deteriorating as we speak,” she said. “People need to understand the implications of their actions.”
Alissa said the highlight of the competition had been the artistic process of creating the work.
The Waste to Art exhibition is open until 8 January 2023
at Gatakers Artspace in Maryborough.
Community members are encouraged to check out the more than 150 artworks and place a vote for their favourite to win the People’s Choice Award.

Major upgrade progresses at Bunnings Intersection
A MAJOR upgrade to one of Hervey Bay’s busiest road intersections is progressing as part of the $59 million Bunnings development on the corner of McLiver Street and Main Street.
Cr David Lee said the work would improve traffic flow through the intersection of Main Street and McLiver Street near the Pialba Aldi and Stockland Shopping Centre which often experienced significant congestion with traffic backing up into the Stockland car park.
“The Bunnings development has given us an opportunity to work collaboratively with a number of landholders and businesses to achieve a substantial upgrade to the Main Street and McLiver Street intersection,” he said.
A traffic analysis of the intersection determined that a
left turn slip lane from McLiver Street (from the Stocklands/ Aldi shopping centres) into Main Street would help alleviate congestion issues and improve the efficient operations of the traffic signals.
Cr Lee said Bunnings, as part of its development approval, was required to build a new right turn lane into Main Street from McLiver Street (westbound), to improve traffic flow at the intersection.
“Council has completed detailed design work for an intersection upgrade to the western side of McLiver Street. This work will start after the Bunnings intersection works are completed,” Cr Lee said.
“Council is continuing talks with neighbouring landowners to acquire land to undertake its portion of the project –adding the slip lane to improve
the flow of traffic leaving the Stockland Shopping Centre and Aldi.
The project includes:
• An extra right turn lane from McLiver Street (westbound) into Main Street;
• Construction of left turn lane from Main Street into McLiver Street (eastbound);
• Construction of left turn lane from McLiver Street into Main Street (northbound);
• Extension of the right turn lane into Stockland and Aldi in Main Street (southbound);
• Extension of right turn lane into McLiver Street from Main St (northbound);
• New right turn lane into Bunnings in McLiver Street;
• New left turn lane into Bunnings in Main Street;
• New roundabout at the intersection of McLiver Street and Davis Drive;
• Inclusion of extra pedestrian leg on the traffic signals.

MAX Employment’s Cutting Edge Timber Program

timber industry contributes $3.8 billion to the state economy and employs 25,000 Queenslanders including thousands in the Wide Bay area.
The Cutting Edge Timber Program connects candidates from MAX Employment and other job providers from around the region with pre-employment screening interviews and medical checks followed by a timber industry focused training program.
During the three-week training course, participants complete a certificate of attainment in FWP20316 Certificate II in Saw Milling and Processing while also familiarising themselves with timber processing mills in the Maryborough area.
After experiencing unemployment for eight years, participant Josh (pictured) joined MAX and shortly after enrolled in the program. He is now working with DTM and enjoying stable employment for the first time.
“We’re pleased to be working collaboratively with Austin at the Local Jobs Program, the local timber industry and other job providers to give locals sustainable job opportunities and career paths,” says MAX
“We’re looking forward to continuing to connect up to 30 suitable candidates with career opportunities in the timber industry,” says Mr Papas.
The combination of customised pre-employment training and input from DTM combine to give the new recruits the best chance of long-term success.
Upon completion of the program, participants are either offered employment with DTM or will take away tangible and transferrable skills
for wood process operator roles at other local mills which MAX Employment has solid relationships with.
A range of career progression opportunities are available in the timber industry.
Up to 30 participants will be given access to the training and employment opportunities during the rollout of the initiative.
Places are limited. The next intake of 10 participants will start on 14 November 2022 with applications open for the final intake, expected to start in late January 2023.

Poly melter creates lightweight bricks
FRASER Coast Regional Councillor David Lee said the amount of polystyrene recycled in the region had more than doubled in the last financial year.
“In 2021/22, Fraser Coast residents recycled 21 tonnes of polystyrene; that’s a mountain of material that was diverted from landfill,” Cr Lee said.
“That’s a lot of space that has been saved, and the more space we can save the longer we can keep the Saltwater Creek Road landfill operating.
Polystyrene can be taken to the recycling shed at Council’s Nikenbah transfer station and the Maryborough landfill. It should not be placed in the yellow lid recycling bins that are collected from in front of your house.
The polystyrene collected by Council is fed into a machine that shreds and melts it.
It is then formed into bricks ready for resale.
“The bricks are sold, and the material is used to create other products such as picture frames and boards,” Cr Lee said.
More than 600 tonnes of items were diverted from landfill to be reused or repurposed through the Nikenbah and Maryborough tip shop over the last year.
“If items are not in resellable condition, we salvage whatever we can at our recycling shed before disposing the rest to landfill,” Cr Lee said.
“While a lot of things can be recycled, not all of them
can go in the recycling bin; some, like paints and oils, broken electrical items and polystyrene packaging, should be taken to a transfer station or landfill site,” Cr Lee said.
“Most of the items that can be recycled can be disposed of for free at the Council transfer stations and landfill.
“There is a charge to dispose of fridges, freezes and air conditioners to cover the cost of degassing and processing the refrigerant.
“There is also a cost for tyres to cover the cost of shipping them to a processing plant near Brisbane.
“But other items such as steel, green waste up to 1 tonne and paper are accepted for free.

New footpaths a boost for school students
GETTING to school will be a little easier for students attending the Hervey Bay Special School or the Kawungan State School thanks to a footpath installed by the Fraser Coast Regional Council.
The work was one of several footpath projects across the Fraser Coast that have been completed, are underway or about to start.
“As part of the project, about 430 metres of a 1.3m-wide concrete footpath has been installed on the southern side of Frangipanni Avenue and on the western side of Eugenia Way between Grevillea Street and Oleander Avenue,” Cr David Lee said.
The project also included the installation of a refuge island crossing point in Frangipanni Avenue.
“The project was identified as part of Council’s Active Travel Strategy,” Cr Lee said.

The $205,000 project was partially funded under the State Government’s Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme and undertaken by Council’s workforce.
Projects in Maryborough and Burrum Heads will cover the replacement of worn-out footpaths and new footpath projects.
Council has a huge footpath network, Cr Denis Chapman said.
“In the current financial year, Council has allocated $1.6m
to building new footpaths and bikeways and $593,000 to replacing worn-out footpaths,” he said.
In Burrum Heads, a 100m section of the existing paved footpath along the Esplanade adjacent to the Burrum Heads Boat Ramp carpark towards Ross Street will be replaced with a 1.3m-wide concrete footpath.
The $90,000 project will be undertaken by Council’s workforce.
In Maryborough, the 110m section of footpath on the western side of Saltwater Creek Road between Ellis Street and Nuneaton Street is also being replaced.
The section was identified for replacement as part of Council’s annual footpath inspection program.
The $120,000 project is being undertaken by Council’s workforce.

Sleepbus service for homeless to run from Pialba carpark
A NEW sleepbus offering overnight accommodation for the homeless and vulnerable will operate nightly from a carpark on the Esplanade in Pialba as part of a six-month trial of the service.
Hervey Bay Bendigo Community Bank and sleepbus have joined together to convert a bus into a safe, mobile sleeping space for up to 20 people each night.
Branch Manager for the Community Bank Tim Evans said, “We are very proud to be giving back to the community with a sleepbus as the homeless crisis is a real priority for Hervey Bay.”
The sleepbus includes climate controlled individual sleep pods with sheets, linen and a pillow included, along with a lockable door and toilet. It also includes overnight security and CCTV surveillance, storage for belongings, a place for pets, and a twin cabin for overnight volunteers.
The Hervey Bay sleepbus is due to be delivered and start operating in January 2023.
Cr Jade Wellings said the housing crisis had left many people without a roof over
their heads and the sleepbus was a fantastic initiative to help those sleeping rough.
“It is important that governments at all levels work together and work with businesses, charities and individuals to address the challenging housing issues confronting our community,” she said.
“Council congratulates the Hervey Bay Bendigo Community Bank and sleepbus for providing this service, which will do so much for those in our community who have so little.
“This is about getting people off the street and offering an immediate, first stop, cost effective solution for our society’s most vulnerable,
catching them early until they can get back on their feet.”
At a meeting on 23rd November, Council approved the carpark at Apex Park in Pialba as the site for the bus to operate from on a nightly basis from 8pm to 8am, subject to a six-month trial period.
During the day, the sleepbus would return to its depot to be cleaned and reset.
The sleepbus organisation is a registered not-forprofit charity that currently provides services in Canberra, Maroochydore and Queanbeyan, with further services planned for Sydney, Melbourne and Byron Bay.

Boob choir is simply joyful
BORN of the intention to meet once a week for companionship and finding comfort in song, has resulted in the formation of the ‘Soul Sisters’, for local women facing the challenges of breast cancer.
Instigated by well know local singing teacher Twila Whittingham, the concept was born quite unexpectantly.
“It was an inspiration that popped up in my meditation not long after I was diagnosed with a precancerous tumour,” Twila said.
“I have been teaching people to sing for over 40 years and bringing choirs together to 35 of those.
“This is in fact the first adult choir I have assisted in putting together, as my background is predominantly with children.”
“Once I had the idea, I contacted Megan Lynch, our
Breast Care nurse here in Hervey Bay.
“She quickly became the ‘soul’ driver who spread the message amongst the cohort of ladies in our region, facing the same challenges.”
“We get together once a week and our singing sessions are packed with enthusiasm, joy, laughter and beautiful song.”
“It is music therapy, not a purist choir. We generate smiles.”
“Of the 35 vibrant joyous women who are a part of the choir, most have never performed before.
“The common thread is that they have all been touched in some way by Breast Cancer, either themselves or indirectly.
“Some have fought their battle, while some still have the battle of their lives ahead.”

ON A beautiful block of land in the peaceful suburb of Wondunna, you will find Lisa Paxton surrounded by her gorgeous dogs, Snickers and Bundy and about ten chickens somewhere out the back.
It is a far cry from her childhood, growing up in the outer suburbs of Sydney with her younger brother.
Lisa, her husband guy, and their youngest daughter Brontie, who is nearly eighteen, have called the suburb home for the last four years.
“Brontie is nearly eighteen and has recently graduated from high school. She has her whole life in front of her.
“I am very proud of the
young woman she has become,” said Lisa.
Lisa’s oldest daughter Britney has a family of her own and lives on the Gold Coast.
Lisa and Guy met each other at a family member’s engagement party back in Sydney and got along well. That was twenty-one years ago.
After coming to Hervey Bay a few times to visit Guy’s brother, the two decided to make the move and bring their family to Hervey Bay as they thought that it was a beautiful place to live.
Lisa is a support worker and works for herself. She loves her job and loves helping people,
and embraces the many challenges that come with this kind of work.
The last ten years have been difficult for the Paxton family. Nine years ago, Lisa was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Lisa says, “I was due for my regular scheduled check-up, nothing more.
“I had no reason to be alarmed as I had no pain or symptoms and was feeling well.
“Unfortunately, after an ultrasound, a cancerous lump was found in my left breast.
“The news was a huge shock as no one in my family had ever had breast cancer.

followed by an operation, chemo, radiation and then five years on a hormone blocker as my cancer was hormone positive.
“After all of the treatment and check-ups, I was given the all-clear.”
But that wasn’t the end of it.
Lisa continues, “Then, Last December, I was told that the breast cancer had come back, but this time it was in the other breast.
“I have now had all the treatment, so am hoping that the cancer is gone.
“I am still having immunotherapy every three weeks and am on hormone blockers again, this time for ten
years.”
Other than the weight gain caused by medication, one of the hardest things to overcome for Lisa was the hair loss, not once but twice.
Before cancer, Lisa had long hair and equates losing it to almost losing her identity. The second time her hair grew back, it was grey, which took some getting used to.
Lisa tries not to dwell on the difficult and dark times and keeps herself busy.
She also exercises when she can, so most mornings, is out walking.
“I am just living life. I enjoy water aerobics, going to the beach and taking the dogs for
“I wouldn’t mind learning photography and maybe a bit of art. I look forward to trying new things and ticking a few things off my list.
“The biggest advice that I can give someone who has recently received a cancer diagnosis is to look after yourself.
“It is all about self-care. Make sure you have a good network of friends and family around you and try to stay as healthy as you can.
“All these things will help with your mental health too.
“To all those men and women out there - Get your breasts checked, don’t put it off. It could save your life!”

Red Dragons Boat Club
THE FRASER Coast Red Dragons Boat Club is a small, all-inclusive club paddling in the beautiful, sheltered waters of the Fraser Coast, on the foreshore of Scarness beach.
In 2019 after competing at National Level in Canberra a small group of regional dragon boat paddlers from the Fraser Coast came together to form a regional paddling group to encourage and promote healthy physical activity and social interaction through the sport of dragon boating.
With support from the Fraser Coast Regional Council the Fraser Coast Red Dragons became an incorporated entity in October 2020.
Club members come from very diverse backgrounds and share both a love of
paddling both socially and competitively.
Our club values a strong community spirit and we have developed mutually beneficial partnerships with other paddling clubs like the Fraser Coast Outrigger Canoe Club. Our partnership promotes sharing of club resources, supports each clubs’ organised events (regattas, social paddling events) and in paving the way for the community groups to access and participate in both sports.
With 42% of our members being Veterans, the club has a deep interest in promoting the psychological and physical health benefits of paddling in alleviating illnesses associated with service life and in reducing depression, anxiety, chronic pain and importantly
in enhancing self-regard.
The Red Dragons alongside the Fraser Coast Outriggers have aligned to develop paddling programs to improve the lives of Veterans.
The Fraser Coast Regional Council has been instrumental in providing the club with the beginnings of a home base at Scarness as well as in the awarding of community grants that have allowed the club to delivery its services to the community.
With the support of Councillor David Lee, the club is working together with the Fraser Coast Regional Council to establish a permanent club base at Scarness.

No silent night at Seafront Oval
IN 1937, popular radio presenter for 3KZ Norman Banks was walking through the streets of St Kilda, Victoria when he spotted an elderly woman whose face lit up while singing carols alone on Christmas eve.
The scene gave him an idea: what if, rather than singing carols alone, people could come together, ensuring no one spent Christmas Eve by themselves? The event would be called ‘Carols by Candlelight’.
The Australian tradition is well and truly alive in Hervey Bay with a 7000-strong crowd expected to come together for the annual Hervey Bay RSL Carols by Candlelight on December 10.
The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program has supported the much-loved event for many years and organiser Luke Strochnetter couldn’t be more thankful for
this year’s grant of $12,000 to help cover running costs.
“We are truly grateful to have the support of so many local businesses including the Hervey Bay RSL,” Luke said.
“The Hervey Bay RSL have been the main supporters of The Hervey Bay Carols by Candlelight for over 10 years and we simply wouldn't be able to continue this much loved tradition without their support.
“This event is fully run by volunteers so to have support from the Hervey Bay RSL allows us to make the event as successful as possible.”
The event is presented by the Hervey Bay Christian Ministers Association and organised by 360 Degrees Marketing and truly promises a night full of festive favourites with the carols program starting with live entertainment on stage before 5pm with the main program
running from 6pm-8pm.
The program will be filled to the brim with traditional Carols, fun festive songs, singers and musicians from the community, and all of your favourite Christmas singalongs.
We are also expecting a very special guest from the North Pole.
The evening will also finish with the Prime Agents Fireworks Finale that will be nothing short of spectacular.
Gates open from 4.30pm with the main program commencing at 6pm.

Pitt pushes petition for heart doctors
THE WIDE Bay region, encompassing Hervey Bay, is home to 204,000 people, and is currently facing the threat of having only one interventional cardiologist to care for people having heart attacks.
Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said with over 1,700 patients from the Wide Bay last year alone receiving cardiology care when three interventional cardiologists practised locally, it is expected that wait lists will blow out and patients are likely to be air lifted to Brisbane for urgent heart surgery, putting lives at risk.
“At a cost to taxpayers of around $20,000 per patient air lifted, it’s time the Labor Government acted by implementing a basic change to the way exemptions are granted for specialists to be approved to work in regional areas,” Mr Pitt said.
“The Wide Bay has an ageing population, in a lower income area that has high rates of cardiac disease. All three of these factors combine to prove that we desperately need to attract and retain local cardiologists here in the Wide Bay.”
“When you have a heart attack, time is of the essence.
Patients need to be wheeled into an operating theatre, not into an ambulance to have them airlifted to a hospital down south just because we can’t get cardiologists due to a technical issue with the way workforce shortages are calculated.”
“I have launched a petition calling on the Federal Health Minister to make urgent changes before patients in this region are adversely affected.”
“This issue was recently brought to my attention by local cardiologists who provide crucial cardiac care to numerous patients through
both the Wide Bay Hospital Health Service and private hospitals in the region,” Mr Pitt said.
“If a specialist no longer bills in that area, their provider number remains active, so on paper it looks like there are sufficient specialists in the region.”
“Without this change, the future of Cardiac care in the Wide Bay region is at risk, and patients could be at risk, which is simply unacceptable.”

CRICKET: Hervey Bay hosted a doubleheader in round seven of the Fraser Coast Senior Cricket competition.
Cavaliers and Ausrocks faced off on Allan Embrey Oval, with Ausrocks winning the toss and sending Cavaliers into bat.
Cavaliers lost opener Aaron Jackson, early for four runs before settling down to bat out the 40 overs and make the total of 4/239.

Millie Jackson, Tallen Gunn and Grace Wright will represent Country in the Queensland Interbranch Championships at Bilinga on the Gold Coast.
The three young surf lifesavers gained selection to the Country team after outstanding performances at the Northern Australia championships.
Hervey Bay Surf Lifesaving Club coach Tony Grima believes they will perform well over the weekend.
“Millie and Grace have been there before, and it is the first time for Tallen. They have
plenty of talent and have been training well, and I believe they should all be aiming for top five positions,” Grima said.
He knows they face tough opposition against the Sunshine and Gold Coast competitors, but that good results are achievable.
“They are proving that someone from our little club can represent at a higher level and give the younger competitors something to strive for,” he said.
Having experienced the championships last year, Grace Wright is excited about the carnival.
“It is pretty cool to represent my club and the country team, and after last year, I know it is fun, and I believe I should be able to finish in the top five,” Wright said.
It is a similar story for Millie Jackson, and after stumbling in the sprints last year, she is ready to improve.
“I want to do my best and hopefully make it to the finals,” Jackson said.
For Tallen Gunn, he is ready to soak in the experience.
“It is a big confidence boost to make the team, and I am ready to go out and have some fun and do my best,” Gunn said.
