YOUR wastewater system is a vital aspect of your home, but all too often, buyers engage a pre-purchase inspection with a building and pest inspector, unaware that the wastewater system is not generally included in that service.

Buying your next home is an exciting time and whilst you make sure all of the things you can see, tick the boxes for you, what about the things you can’t see.

To find out if the property you are looking at purchasing is serviced by the Council Sewage System, check the rates notice under Utility Charges there will be a fee charged. Most aerated treatment plants require quarterly servicing starting at a yearly cost of $300.

Removing or replacing a failed system can cost in excess of $15,000 - many systems that require replacement have infrastructure in place that make replacement difficult such as landscaping, driveways, sheds, overhead power lines.

Poor access, setbacks from established infrastructure and land size can also limit

your options of the size of system you are able to install so this may also affect your future plans eg adding on a bedroom/granny flat or swimming pool/shed.

Any proposed lifestyle options should be discussed at the time of the booking of the wastewater pre-purchase inspection.

Torch and pitchfork brigade still coming for new $100M Council headquarters

WAY back in August of last year, I expressed my unequivocal support for the new Council development in the Hervey Bay City Centre as a fantastic landmark initiative.

My view on that has not changed at all. I just don’t get the backlash that has remained so consistent.

The thing that has surprised me the most has been the unrelenting pushback towards this project on forums and social media.

In my time in Hervey Bay, I have not seen such a visceral reaction to a Council initiative, with the possible exception of the sports precinct, which ironically is now recognised as one on the best projects Council has undertaken.

It’s website “niaa.gov. au” gives all the details. It is funded with $2 billion annually.

Good Morning, this is just to say a big thank you for your support in advertising our garage sale last weekend, it was a great success.

The money raised will allow us to update equipment, help cover the cost of running the shed as well as making donations to charitable organizations during the year.

This is a once in a generation opportunity to reshape our city centre in Hervey Bay, to create jobs and to drive economic growth and investment.

Hundreds of jobs will be created, and local businesses will reap huge benefits during and after construction of the new Council building.

More than three quarters of the development will be community space, and the current Hervey Bay Library is only half the size it should be. The new one fixes that.

There is currently an absence of vibrancy and economic activity at Pialba that would be expected and indeed is necessary for a successful City Centre. The project fixes that.

I have to agree with Marie Brown (March 9). Something needs to change in relation to the use of e-scooters.

While visiting recently with our son and his family, our 3 year old grandson was knocked over by an e-scooter ridden by a lad about 14. It happened on the footpath near the Urangan Pier.

The child sustained grazes, bruising, a bump on the head and a big fright but luckily

It could have been much worse. The lad accelerated instead of slowing right down near pedestrians and after the accident, did not stop.

We observed many riders during the week, one was no more than 8 or 9, and most were very respectful of other path users.

One problem, as I see it, is the quietness of the vehicle (perhaps they need a bell like bikes) and the other I s the age of the drivers.

I feel no one younger than 16 should have access - at 16 most young people are learning the road rules for their L plates, so have some

idea of what is required to ride safely.

Hopefully, someone smarter than I, will work out a safe way forward for everyone.

YES, infrastructure, the right sort of infrastructure is needed.

Hervey Bay has never had a CBD and never will have, a past lack of town planning has seen to that.

The current site of our council chambers, not only has room for a new building, but will not increase traffic congestion in an already congested area.

Of all the sites available for the new council chambers, the corner of Main St and Torquay Rd would have to be the worst. Time our council and the regions developers, look to the future, not their hip pockets.

Dear Mr Editor. I would just like to say what a breath of fresh air it is to be able to express an opinion in a Letters to the editor section of a newspaper, something that I’ve missed since the Fraser Coast Chronicle scrapped its printing machine and went online.

A lot of letters are regarding the proposed Council administration Centre development and are against it, I AGREE WITH THEM what a complete waste of money, Fraser Coast ratepayers don’t want to be financing the next major development in Hervey Bay let somebody else have that pleasure.

The money put aside for this edifice would be better spent on existing infrastructure such as increasing the water holding capacity for our areas, we are heading into an El Nino phase now so dry times ahead and water restrictions are imminent with the increasing holidaying population.

Why not keep the existing council premises and just tidy them up a little (new carpet maybe and a paint job) it is just an administration centre after all where the paperwork is done and the councillors can have their meetings, a lot of council services are performed by private enterprise now such as building certification and engineering.

When you think about it

Maryborough is the central hub of the Fraser Coast council area, and having already decided to build a new council premises there, why not make that the main centre for local government.

To mayor George and your fellow councillors, please note an election is not that far away, do you really want placard wavers in your face at election time because of such a stupid decision.

Be aware myself and others are salivating at the thought of banking the salaries that you councillors receive.

Hervey Bay white elephant proposal

This new building proposal for council and library is putting it mildly bizarre. The mathematics don’t add up, cost out of site...indulgence at the least. Which genius came up with so called forward thinking...more like a handbrake moment. Yes, council officers are centrally located at the moment, how much cheaper option would be supplying a free bus service for all parts of the Bay? Sure if required new structures could be accommodated on existing site at a fraction of the cost. This site is large enough thanks to appropriate forward thinking. Allowing plenty of parking, and in a plan, if required, allow for further height when necessary. Building bigger footing and load efficiency for extra floors in the future. Future forward thinking is required but with a balanced approach. Already council wants to reduce speed in Main Street, this is before the white elephant is even built. Access for all with a balanced approach is required, not reactionary approach. How do you fight dumb, simply put, you can’t because they don’t know they are.

Boundary Road extension reaches half-way point

A MAJOR new east-west road connection through Hervey Bay has reached the half-way point.

Cr Denis Chapman said with the Fraser Coast growing rapidly, extending Boundary Road would help reduce traffic congestion and take pressure off Boat Harbour Drive.

“The Boundary Road extension will provide alternative and improved access to the Hervey Bay city centre, major shopping centres, tourist destinations and the medical precinct,” he said.

“While the most recent works have occurred in Grevillea Street in Kawungan, the focus shifts next week to the area of Boundary Road between Tavistock Street and Denmans Camp Road.

“The initial works in this area will include replacing a drainage culvert east of Maree Street, pavement widening on the northern side of Boundary Road and the construction of a raised priority crossing.

“These works will require a full road closure of this section of Boundary Road for ten weeks, weather and construction conditions permitting, with detours to be in place. Denmans Camp Road will remain open.

“We thank everyone in

advance for their patience during construction and urge motorists to please follow the traffic control advice for this and any road project.”

Cr Chapman said while wet weather had slowed the progress of the project, particularly in the early stages, the project was now half way through with completion expected by March 2024.

“This is a project that has been decades in the making, and it will set us up for decades to come,” he said.

“It includes the construction of a dual lane two-way road along the vacant road reserve between the roundabout at the Urraween Road and Kawungan Way intersection, connecting to the intersection at Boundary Road and Denmans Camp Road.

“It will include new traffic

lights at the intersections at Grevillea Street and Denmans Camp Road., with concrete shared pathways provided on both sides of Boundary Road and on-road cycle lanes also included.”

The $30 million Boundary Road extension project is being funded by the Australian Government ($7.7 million) as part of the Hinkler Regional Deal initiative, the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme ($3.1 million) and Fraser Coast Regional Council.

A vision to reshape the streetscape in City Centre

MORE trees and outdoor dining, pop-up events and prioritising pedestrians are among the key features in a vision to reshape the streetscape in the Hervey Bay City Centre.

Fraser Coast Regional Council have released the ‘Hervey Bay Placemaking and Public Realm Vision Document’, which builds on the 20-year master plan for the city centre.

Cr David Lee said the public realm vision document emphasised making walking the natural choice and ensuring the city centre was slower and safer for everyone.

“Raised zebra crossings have been proposed in the short term near the Main Street/ Torquay Road roundabout with the ultimate long-term design solution to be traffic lights at this intersection to slow down cars and prioritise pedestrians,” he said.

“Proposals also centre around making Main Street pedestrian friendly and developing a well-lit, ramped pathway or an external lift near the Main Street/Esplanade roundabout to improve wheelchair access.

“It’s all about making the city centre a destination rather than a thoroughfare.”

Cr David Lewis said underground powerlines would allow more street trees and other plantings to provide shade, cool the environment and reduce carbon emissions.

“The vision document proposes adding a lane and covering the section of the mobility corridor that will link the new library and administration centre with a new car park near the old library,” he said.

“This would provide all users better, safer, well-lit, allweather access.

“Activating Freedom Park, new paving and landscape treatments, footpath dining, and pop-up events with food vans in the Torquay Road car park are all part of the vision

to create a lively, inner-city hub with places to stop and sit, get a bite to eat and catch up with family and friends.

“These proposals go hand in hand with creating a new outdoor public plaza on the corner of Main Street and Torquay Road where there could be events, markets, live music, a pop-up cinema, and reading lounges.

“Hervey Bay has come of age and grown from the days of being a series of small, seaside villages.

Artists explore the human and animal relationship

THE HERVEY Bay Regional Gallery will showcase two new exhibitions which examine our relationships with other species.

Cr David Lewis said the Fraser Coast had a colourful and vibrant cultural life, and the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery was helping to enhance that through its exhibitions and public programs.

“Our Fraser Coast Arts and Culture Strategy seeks to ensure that indigenous cultures are respected and celebrated, while also encouraging creativity and engagement across the community,” he said.

“The two new exhibitions opening at the gallery - The Dingo Project: Wongari and Fernando do Campo: To companion a companion –firmly align with our Arts and Culture Strategy.

FRASER Coast Regional Council is collaborating with local youth groups, services and agencies to host a jam-packed week of free fun activities for 2023 Youth Week!

Set to be bigger than ever before, this year’s Youth Week will be chockfull with annual favourites but also a host of new events.

Mayor George Seymour said Council was proud to be expanding Youth Week offers.

“We are excited to host events in Howard and Bauple this year, which will focus around Laser Skirmish” he said.

“Council hopes this will be a wonderful opportunity

to allow young people to celebrate closer to home.

“This year will also see the introduction of two new events in Maryborough, Borough Beats and Day in the Park, which will both be held in ANZAC park.”

With eight diverse events held between April 11 and 15, 2023 there will be something for all young people aged 12 to 25 to engage with.

“By co-ordinating these activities, we show our youth that they are important to us, they are valued, and they make a valuable contribution to our communities.

Dog registration inspection program has commenced

FRASER Coast dog owners have been praised for their good behaviour with 21,899 dogs re-registered this year.

Cr Zane O’Keefe encouraged dog owners who were yet to register their dogs to do so as soon as possible.

“Council issued just over 21,000 dog registration notices in late September and about 2,000 owners are yet to respond.”

To ensure that the Council’s records are up to date the annual dog registration inspection program commenced on 27 March 2023 and will run through to the end of September.

The inspection program will start with the owners who have not returned their paperwork.

“Sometimes people get lost in the system because they move house, or unfortunately their pet passes away, and they forget to contact Council to update their details,” Cr O’Keefe said.

“If you have registered dog and didn’t receive a registration notification pleased contact Council as soon as you can so we can ensure your details are up to date.”

Council staff and contractors conducting the inspections will visit homes across the region between 7am and 5pm Monday to Saturday.

While officers hope to complete the inspection without having to enter a property, they do have power under the Animal

Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 to enter a property.

Cr O’Keefe said registering animals had benefits for owners.

“If an animal is found wandering or is taken to the pound, registered dogs can be reunited with their owners very quickly,” he said.

“It is important those details are kept up to date with Council and the group which holds your pet’s microchip data.

“And remember, if you have a new dog, registration is free the first time you register your animal in the Fraser Coast region.”

Dog registration fees help pay for animal management, training programs and provides for improved access to dog-friendly open spaces.”

Owners found with an unregistered dog are liable for the $287 fine, as well as the cost of registration.

If you have not reregistered you pet, or your pet’s details have changed, especially if it has passed away, please contact Council on 1300 79 49 29 and talk to a Customer Service Officer.

A NEW initiative to raise funds for this year’s Dunga Derby event has been a real success in their first attempt last month being completely booked out.

Danni’s Pink Spanners Workshop is aimed at females to learn all the necessary maintenance and repair requirements for cars without seeking help.

The idea has come from Danielle Close, who works for Reel Diesel Services, where she was able to demonstrate and explain practical steps the ladies can use with their vehicles.

The first of the monthly workshop was very popular; they covered a number of topics to provide women drivers with better knowledge

of vehicles. Some of these included when preparing to purchase cars, understanding the importance of tyre pressures, how to change a tyre themselves and even demonstrating the vehicle going on the hoist, preparing it for an inspection underneath.

“One lady spoke of not having her vehicle motor running and therefore completely draining her battery,” says Danni who believes the ladies will be surprised at how much they can do to look after their cars.

The workshop ends with a question and answer session leaving the ladies with the confidence they needed to be better equipped in the future.

The workshop is free with a gold coin donation for a BBQ

breakfast. All funds go towards Team 43 Breast Intentions and Team 52 Coast Busters in this year’s Dunga Derby.

This event raises funds that go to the Rally for a Cause Charity, which supports families and individuals affected by life-limiting medical conditions or who have had their lives disrupted by circumstances beyond their control.

Market day a huge success for Fraser Shores residents

FRASER Shores 2 recently held a much-anticipated market day, attracting a huge crowd to the complex.

Denise Lewis, a resident of Fraser Shore and a member of the organising committee, heralded the day as a huge success.

“This was our very first market day. It has been on the card for a while, but Covid got in the way and spoiled our plans,” Denise said.

“We have had smaller events in the past, but this is the largest thing we have done.”

Across the village, which is home to more than 280 residents, a strong community

feel was brought to the ambitious project.

“It was an opportunity for those who are particularly crafty to make and sell goods and also a great chance for a lot of residents to de-clutter.”

“The event was covered on Channel 7 and we erected posters on the outside of the village on Nissen Street. It was also featured on a lot of social media pages.”

“Once the first one hundred people came through the door, we stopped counting. It was a wonderful day.”

The market day will now be planned as an annual project for Fraser Shores, given the

success of the inaugural event.

“Ideas for the next event are already flowing and the residents are still buzzing about it.”

“We planned this event for months in advance and had so many volunteers assisting us. The sense of accomplishment was amazing for the residents and gave us all something to look forward to and focus on.”

“The next day we held a morning tea feedback session to understand how we could improve the market Day in the future, as well as an opportunity to thank stall holders and volunteers.”

Award for Wastewater

A LOCAL family-owned business based in Hervey Bay specialising in wastewater treatment systems for both domestic and commercial applications for non-sewered properties have been named the second highest agent for Taylex Tanks at a Conference.

Coastal Wastewater Specialists (CWWS) owners Priscilla and Brett Howard said this was a great achievement not only for the CWWS team, but also the Wide Bay region with the recent housing growth in the last few years. Priscilla said “we are not plumbers that ‘do wastewater’, we are wastewater specialists that are plumbers”.

They do encourage people

pre-purchase inspections properties in evaluating the wastewater and septic systems so that they can budget accordingly.

“Wastewater and septic systems are not normally covered under standard building and pest inspections” says a spokesperson for the company.

“This is a critical part of your home and when it stops working it is a case of toilets not flushing, showers backing up and effluent overflowing.”

The two largest growth areas for wastewater systems for the business has been Gympie and Hervey Bay.

Increasingly, wastewater, stormwater and rainwater are being seen as recyclable

resources rather than as disposal problems.

They believe that as a nation, Australia’s use of recycled water is low but increasing each year. The majority of this is used in agriculture, thus the general Australian community have very little experience with recycled water use.

Martin Ritchie began with the then named car yard Tarrant’s a week before Christmas in 1973. The fresh faced 15 year old, who had a passion for speedway, eagerly started his first day as a motor mechanic apprentice at the Maryborough business when “Hervey Bay was just a seaside town.”

That began a journey of seeing multiple ownerships of the business and a career that is recognised as one of Ford Australia’s longest

serving Master-Techs. His love of cars has seen his early apprenticeship launch his expertise to a Master-Tech level with constant training in technology that now includes Electric Vehicles.

“They are still motor cars, they now just have more power and fuel efficiency than ever before,” says Martin. He still carries the same passion and treats the cars he works on as if they are his own. His presence and the famous blue overalls will be sadly missed. Staff will gather for a farewell food and drinks night at the Westside Tavern.

Married for 39 years with

three children, the proud family man loves to share his passion with his son, who is also a mechanic.

“I don’t want to finish in a wheelchair; I’m still feeling healthy, so now is the time to enjoy the next part of my life,” says Mr Ritchie.

Proudly born and lived in Maryborough all of his life, and remarkably only ever lived in two homes in his 64 years – his father’s and his own. Martin now wants to spend some time on his house.

“I plan to take the caravan around Australia for 12 months, I’m just not sure when. We are not in a rush.”

SUE Murray was born in Melbourne in 1961 and has many memories of what life was like back then. She remembers the dunny man who used to come in his red truck to empty the outhouses. “My kids were mortified when I told them about him. But that was how life was back

In 1990, Sue went on a Contiki Tour for four weeks travelling around Europe. Nine travellers, including Sue, decided to return to London and get a house together. Sue stayed for two years and immediately picked up a job at Saxone Shoes at Charing

Cross. While there, she also worked in a sports store and taught Aerobics.

In 1992, she returned to Hervey Bay for three weeks and never left.

Sue has had a few jobs over the years, including working in a fruit barn, a lady’s gymnasium, a bank, and managing Sussan stores. For the last fifteen years, she has been the practice supervisor at Bayside Radiology, a role she loves.

In 2006, Sue became a Surf Life Saver and enrolled her kids in Nippers. “I love surf life-saving. The club is full of great people, and

I enjoy helping those on the beach. It is a great way to give back to your community”.

Growing up, Sue was also an avid water skier and loved to scuba dive.

Years ago, Sue headed out on the water at Queenscliff in Victoria for a dive experience. This trip would be remembered for all of the wrong reasons and is the stuff of nightmares.

Before entering the water, Sue was informed that two of the divers had gone down the dive rope to wait for her and her dive buddy. As the pair got deeper, Sue’s dive buddy panicked, so she had to take

her back to the boat.

“I went down the rope again but couldn’t see the divers. I looked around a bit but then couldn’t find the dive rope and got caught in the current.

“Finally, I began to surface but heard a boat motor, so I went down deep enough to not get hit. Then, I got washed through a rocky channel and bashed side to side in the current.

“When I did manage to surface again, there was not a boat in sight. I was alone in the middle of the ocean with no land in sight.

“I inflated my BC vest

and swapped to a snorkel to conserve my air. In those days, we didn’t wear a torch or have a whistle on our dive vests. I was floating about out there, trying to keep calm, and all I could think of was, is this how Harold Holt felt when he drowned and was never found?

“After what appeared to be ages, I heard a boat. I waved like mad to get their attention, and thank God, it worked.

“They had to lift me out of the water as I was exhausted and dehydrated, I was sobbing so hard. The boat crew were astounded.

“The other boat should have been searching for me, but they never did. I am just so thankful that I lived to tell the story”.

It took many years before Sue worked up the courage to dive again, but she gave it a go on our artificial reef with two great divers who never left her side, but it was never the same as Sue was too afraid.

Sue lives by the mantra, “never look behind you because you have been there and done that. Look forward to all that still awaits for you to discover and explore”.
