WEEKS after a decision was made in the Fraser Coast Council to hold an annual vote on the Deputy Mayor position, a new Councillor has been elected for the role. After four years in the role, Darren Everard has been replaced by Division 3 Councillor Paul Truscott. “I’m very grateful to have been elected to this position of Deputy Mayor by my colleagues,” said Cr Truscott. “I have been in the role of Councillor for six years now and I love serving the people of our region and representing them to our Council.” “I would like to take the opportunity to thank my colleague and friend, Councillor Darren Everard for his time and service as Deputy Mayor to our region. “Darren’s done a great job and I thank him for his hard work in the role. It should be noted too that Darren has served the longest term as Deputy Mayor, with four years, so I’ve now got big shoes to fill.” The Council has adopted a system where the Deputy Mayor’s position will be reviewed annually, allowing different Councillors to fill the role and gain new and different experiences while serving the region. “I work well with our Mayor, George Seymour, my colleagues, Councillors and our state and federal members. I’m looking forward to stepping up to the plate to give

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour with new Deputy Mayor Paul Truscott and Councillor Darren Everard. it my best and continue serving our region. “We live in one of the best places in the world, it’s a great region to serve.” Cr Truscott told the Advertiser that he had arranged to undertake some training to improve his skills to work as efficiently as possible with the new responsibilities. “Now that I have been appointed to the position, I believe that I can bring to this role my passion and enthusiasm, dedication, and the various experiences I’ve gained throughout life and over the last six years as Councillor.” Following the vote, Mayor George Seymour congratulated Cr Truscott and thanked Cr Everard for his work in the role over the past four years. Cr Everard also offered his congratulations to Cr Truscott and thanked the Council for their continued support.

“Reflecting back on the past two years of this term, I have relished the responsibility of Deputy Mayor (or the Spare Mayor) of a near $3 billion operation and I have respected the position and upheld the responsibility bestowed in me.” “I personally think I have developed and matured as a leader in what I would say are unprecedented times. I have at all times endeavoured to be respectful, empathetic & balanced while allowing everybody to have their say.” “Thank you to the members of the community who have welcomed me to many community gatherings and meetings over this period of time, your support has been appreciated.” “Now it is all about the future and I look forward to continuing to get on with the job of building a better Fraser Coast.”

Youth walk for climate action

Hervey Bay’s youth led Walk For Climate Action group. Photo credit: Elizabeth Pohlmann YOUTHFUL exuberance, colourful banners and locals passionate about climate action were seen marching along the Hervey Bay Esplanade last Friday as they joined the global climate strike movement. Fraser Coast representative of Australian Parents for Climate Action (AP4CA) Bianca Sands and her 12 year old daughter Iluka Clifton organised the event, attracting around 40 people. The walk was attended by a diverse range from toddlers to grandparents, with students from Urangan State High, Sandy Straits State School, Fraser Coast Anglican College, St James Lutheran College and homeschool students in attendance. The youth-focused strike ended at the Hervey Bay Sailing Club for a shared breakfast with local businesses supporting the movement. Operation Underground café provided two for one coffee deals and Go Natural donated fruit.

Participants carried Climate Action Now signs to raise awareness of why climate action is important. The event was in solidarity with the School Strike 4 Climate movement, inspired by activist Greta Thunberg. Iluka said they joined millions of other people worldwide in raising awareness about climate change to show the community and politicians that they care about the earth and the future. “Taking action on climate change is vitally important; without it, we have a very uncertain future with more and more catastrophes like the severe flooding seen around QLD recently,” said Iluka, who attends Urangan State High School in Year 7. “The School Strike 4 Climate movement is centred around young people because we will inherit the impacts of this crisis without having caused it.” “We must take action to protect our planet, our plants,

animal species and our futures.” Eight year old James said, “It’s important to care for our environment...To stop planet earth overheating and have a good future.” Ms Sands said the strikers are calling on governments to commit to no new coal, oil and gas projects; 100% renewable energy by 2030 and creating more opportunities for a fossil-free world. “This next decade is a critical time, science is telling us that there is still a window of opportunity to be able to change the trajectory, but action is needed now.” Ms Sands said Iluka was fortunate to be surrounded by inspiring locals and developed a passion for the environment by spending a lot of time appreciating the natural environment and ocean. Iluka has been involved in many projects including litter collection, advocating for reducing plastic, planting trees and her small business Buzznut the Bee selling wax

products. Ms Sands said she believed it was important for youth to have a voice. Iluka was named Fraser Coast’s Young Citizen of the Year in 2021. As this is Iluka’s first year in high school, she didn’t feel confident to organise a school strike said Ms Sands, so they decided to hold this community inclusive event, supported by Australian Parents for Climate Action group. AP4CA is a national organisation supporting local groups in organising and empowering parents and all who care about children to advocate for a safe climate; Ms Sands started the Fraser Coast group in December. “They’re intelligent, considered people in their actions, and it’s a really lovely way for parents to get involved.” “Coming together to consider how we can advocate for safer climate and environmental protection is something a lot of parents are keen to raise their voice on but not necessarily know how to do it; AP4CA is a great support.” Ms Sands said the strikes were vital timing before the federal election. Another national day of youth-led climate action is planned for 29 April. To find out more on how to get involved with the local group visit www. ap4ca.org/fraser_coast

$1 million program to get at-risk locals job-ready THE HERVEY Bay Neighbourhood Centre is proud and excited to introduce LIFT (Local Industry Futures Training) - a new program aimed at helping vulnerable people find their passion and purpose. At its heart, this new service, funded by the Federal Department of Social Services, is a job-readiness training program, but it’s so much more than that. It’s a chance for Hervey Bay residents to find their purpose and take meaningful steps towards the job or career of their dreams. Through a network of events, training and coaching opportunities, LIFT aims to break the cycle of long-term unemployment. This will be achieved through: Youth Assistance Program (YAP) for 16 to 18-year-olds Industry Ready Training for 18 to 35-year-olds Local Learning Network – workshops aimed at teaching new skills and encouraging community engagement HBNC CEO, Tanya Stevenson, said LIFT gets right to the heart of what neighbourhood centres are here to do. “LIFT is all about taking a proactive approach to building positive and resilient communities,” Ms Stevenson said. “We know the Hinkler

electorate region has some of the worst unemployment and youth unemployment rates in the state. “There is no easy fix to this but something needs to be done to turn the tide. “Simply telling people to ‘get a job’ is not enough. Often, people who are caught in the cycle of long-term unemployment lack jobreadiness skills that could be considered basic or fundamental. “The training and employment coaches, youth assistance officers and other team members employed through LIFT will work with job-seekers to build these skills, helping them gain and maintain employment.” The program has already created six new local jobs, with a team leader, training and employment coaches and youth assistance officers joining the HBNC team. LIFT is delivered through The Neighbourhood Hive,

HBNC’s learning and innovation hub. It is made possible by $1,118,616 of Federal Government funding. LIFT adds to HBNC’s growing suite of job training services, including The Wandering Teapot social enterprise and Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) hospitality training. HBNC Operations Manager, Christian Berechree, said the organisation was taking a strategic approach to getting at-risk young jobseekers ready for work. “Hospitality is one of our region’s biggest employers, so it makes sense to train jobseekers in the skills they need to get them the jobs that are out there,” Mr Berechree said. “Using our established café, kitchen, catering and venue hire functions, we can provide a full hospitality training experience through our community hubs.”

Whale of a recovery

ONE of the most majestic animal recovery stories has been confirmed with the removal of the humpback whale from Australia’s threatened species list, and Hervey Bay whale conservationists are very pleased. Director for Australian Operations of Pacific Whale Foundation Andrew Ellis said it was great news and validation that the conservation efforts had paid off. He said they had supported the initiative to remove the whales from the endangered list by submitting a public submission. Pacific Whale Foundation (PWF) has been studying and researching whales for many years. “The (whale) population has had one of the most incredible recoveries of any marine population of wild animals over the last 30 odd years,” said Mr Ellis. “It’s been amazing how they’re recovered since whaling stopped here in Australia in 1979. The population has gone from as low as 300 to upwards of 25,000.” “Without the people power that has put whales at the forefront of people’s minds, this would not have happened.” “It’s certainly a good thing to remove them from that list but we are proposing ongoing research into the animals continues as they face incredible threats to their population; the main ones are climate change and plastic pollution, and we’re concerned with how that may affect the whale population.” “We’ve already seen a lot of change in fish stocks, and we know the change in water temperature will impact the whales as well as it may affect

Pacific Whale Foundation Australia Director Andrew Ellis their food source.” “It may also affect their migratory times….there are predictions of a shift towards the poles; whales may not travel as far north as the ocean warms.” Mr Ellis said there were several different research projects happening in Hervey Bay. One of PDW’s focuses is studying mother and calf pods that come into the Bay, using drone technology. He said they use measurements to assess feeding rates and calf weight gain. Their new research involves studying dolphins. Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley said that while international protections remain firmly in place to prevent any form of whale hunting, the strength of the humpback whale population meant that the independent Threatened Species Scientific Committee no longer regarded them as endangered or vulnerable.

“This is not about removing safeguards for humpbacks, which are still a protected migratory species, but it is a recognition of the success of the outstanding conservation efforts that are in place,” Minister Ley said. “Australia is a world leader in whale conservation, and we will continue to work through the International Whaling Commission to promote whale conservation and maintain the global moratorium on commercial whaling. “Our removal of the Humpback from the threatened species list is based on science and sends a clear signal about what can be achieved through coordinated action. It is a message of hope for the welfare of a number of species.” The decision to remove the Humpback whale from the threatened species list follows a public consultation process and detailed assessment by the independent Threatened Species Scientific Committee.

Bay to host Nashos 50th anniversary event HERVEY Bay will host the National Servicemen’s Association, commonly known as ‘Nashos’, State Conference later this year with extensive planning underway. President of the Hervey Bay Branch Brian Barker, said it was quite an honour as it marked the 50th anniversary of conscripted servicemen’s ‘last intake’. Compulsory military service existed in Australia after the Second World War from 1951 to 1972. Out of 114 Queensland branches, Hervey Bay won the vote to host due to Mr Barker holding the honour of being the only surviving registered Nasho from the last intake in 1972. “There are only ten birthdays under me who completed national service, who got called up and I can’t find any of them,” said Mr Barker. Mr Barker explained the infamous ‘birthday ballot’ used to call up the servicemen; randomly numbered marbles were drawn from a barrel representing birth dates. “The ages of people now who did national service range from 88 to my age which is 70 in a month or so,” said Mr Barker. According to the Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA), 63,735 men were called up between 1964 and 1972. Of these, 15,381 served in Vietnam and another 150 in Borneo. Of these, 212 were killed

Mayor and Nashos Patron George Seymour with Hervey Bay Nashos at this year’s Nasho Day in February serving our nation. “One day they’re a shop assistant, the next day they’re fighting for their lives in Vietnam,” said Mr Barker. To acknowledge the 212 Nashos who paid the ultimate price, the Hervey Bay memorial in Freedom Park will be expanded this year. The height of the monument will be doubled with a roll of honour added around the bottom, thanks in part to a DVA grant and support from Wide Bay Stone. It will be unveiled as part of the State Conference in September. Nashos have been fundraising by selling pins and doing sausage sizzles to help pay for the $5800 monument, as well as to help the servicemen in times of need. “If our members are sick and go to the hospital, we will help them out,” said Mr Barker. “We want to make sure the soldier who has done his time has nothing to worry about.” “We’re all volunteers…

we do this so the soldiers get comradeship, mateship, and no worries.” Mr Barker said the association needs funds to continue to help service these community members in emergencies. “Some of these men are living on their own and the only thing they’ve got is to come to our monthly meeting.” The Hervey Bay Nashos were recognised recently by winning the prestigious Ryan Peter Award 2021 at the Nashos AGM in Brisbane. “We were voted best Queensland branch for the effort we have been putting in; help we’ve been giving each other; showing comradeship.” The Hervey Bay Branch currently has 66 members and welcomes any Nasho to join. The group meets on the fourth Wednesday every month at the Hervey Bay RSL. For anyone interested to donate funds, there is a donation box at the RSL.

Hundreds involved in proposal

A HERVEY Bay teacher had her breath taken away when she was proposed to recently in the most romantic way. Jess Roth, a Year 2 teacher at Yarillee State School was taken up in a helicopter joy flight by her partner Tom Rudd, a butcher at Kawungan Quality Meats, in what she thought was a belated surprise birthday gift. The flight turned out to be the biggest surprise of her life. Original plans had gone awry when the helicopter planned for her birthday was cancelled due to the bad weather a few weeks earlier. “Tom told me there was another surprise coming for my birthday, but I had to wait until the weather cleared, that was all I knew,” said Ms Roth. On the day of the proposal, she still had no idea about the well-kept secret her partner and Yarilee School Principal Sharron McMorrow had been planning for months. “It was my first time being on a helicopter, so I think the excitement of that and then the thought of, ‘I wonder if he could propose’…just went out of my mind,” said Ms Roth. As the helicopter flew over Yarillee State School Ms Roth noticed the children all on the oval and wondered what they were doing. On closer inspection, she saw the children were all formed to spell the words ‘Marry Me’. “It was such an exciting day!” “The kids made a special moment even more special; Tom knows how important my job is to me.”

Mr Rudd said he was confident of her response as they were ready to move forward in their relationship after being together for about a year. Principal McMorrow said, “I was absolutely over the moon when Tom asked me (in November 2021) if I could help him to propose to Jess.” “He told me that Jess had shared with him some time ago that it would be her dream to have children involved

in her wedding proposal.” “Tom then came up with the idea of taking her on a helicopter flight and asked if I could help him by involving the children. So we came up with the idea of spelling out the words “Marry Me” while the helicopter flew by.” “The challenge was preparing for the event without letting the secret out,” said Ms McMorrow. The principal enlisted the help of the school technician with a drone to try it out. “We went up to the top oval one morning (way away from where Jess teaches) and practiced making a large letter “M” and put the drone up so we could see if it looked ok. After a lot of playing around, we finally made a letter that looked OK.”

In the middle of the day the principal and two deputies painted the large letters ‘Marry Me’ on the oval. “The original plan was to have the children in Years 2 and 3 fill the letters but we quickly realised that we needed more children to cover all letters.” “It was then that the children became aware of what was happening and there was a big buzz of excitement.” “So we put a call out to all of our teachers and classes in years 1-6 to come out and lend a hand, which they all happily did without any practice or forward planning.” “I have a fantastic team of staff and children here at Yarrilee and they all came together in a very short period of time before the helicopter flew over. “It was quite beautiful, for when they found out she said “yes” they all cheered, throwing their hats up in the air and started hugging each other.” “It was magic!” “As a school community, we consider ourselves so very lucky to have been able to share such a special event with Jess and Tom.” “There just seems to have been so many tragic events dominating the headlines of late, and to celebrate something so positive and magical I think has captured the hearts of our school community and beyond,” said Ms McMorrow. “I am so grateful for how much support Sharon has shown jumping onboard; Tom couldn’t have made it happen without her support in organising it,” said Ms Roth.

Action and excitement at the Historical Village

THE ‘BIGGEST day ever’ at the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum takes place on Saturday 7 May, for its Antiques and Handcrafts Fair. Historian and Museum President John Andersen said the day is planned to be a very special day full of many exciting features. The annual fair is modelled on the popular BBC TV show Antiques Roadshow, “People can bring their treasures and have them appraised by registered valuers,” said Mr Andersen. This year there will be extra special events that Mr Andersen is thrilled about. The day will feature an official presentation of a recently acquired historic 1935 Caterpillar bulldozer used during the timber logging on K’gari (Fraser Island). Mr Andersen said getting the bulldozer was very significant

and took around seven years for National Parks and Wildlife to finally agree and arrange for it to be transported from the island to the museum. “When the Government heard about the launch, they wanted to get involved and are sending the Environmental Minister for Queensland to officiate the presentation,” said Mr Andersen. The day will also be the official opening of a new maritime display at 10am, opened by Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour. Another highlight of the day will be fashion parades of vintage clothing through the decades at 10.30am and 2pm. The stalls have been expanded this year too, “Anyone is welcome to book a stall and sell your goods so long as it’s historic or collectible. This year we’re also bringing in handmade craftwork.”

To book a stall, call the museum office on 4128 4804. The event will feature vintage cars, a monster raffle, a large auction at 11am, souvenirs and all the permanent museum displays. “There are many reasons to come along and enjoy the day, with plenty of eats and things to do for the kids.” “As a museum, I think our duty is not only to preserve all of the exhibits that we have for the future but also as a tourist attraction and for locals to come along and see things,” said Mr Andersen. Thanks to sponsorship from the Council, the entrance price is only $5 per adult this year; kids are free. The Antiques and Handcraft Fair will be held at the Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum at Zephyr St, Scarness from 9.30am to 3.30pm on Saturday 7 May.

“I Will Reunite Our Community and be a Strong Voice for You in Canberra!” Kristie Nash, UAP Hinkler Candidate I’m Kristie Nash and I’m your local United Australia Party candidate for Hinkler in the 2022 Federal election.

Why am I running?

I believe in a people’s government, where the people come first. The current Government has forgotten about the everyday person. And it’s time for a change! Voting for me guarantees that I can help rebuild the democratic nation we once loved.

This election is extremely important! Voters are feeling betrayed by politicians they once trusted and are looking for a strong and credible Member for Hinkler that considers their voice; - that person is me – Kristie Nash! My vision along with The United Australia Party is clear, our principles are focused on a strong economy, affordable living, and freedom for all Aussies.

Why vote for me?

My greatest strengths are my caring heart, I genuinely listen, and my fighting spirit is unwavering. I believe in a true democracy based on conservative values and I will scrutinise Government policies to ensure they do what is best for the people because your future hopes are important to me! I’m not a career politician, in fact, the main reason I’m standing for parliament is that the community urged me to be their advocate. I don’t come with baggage and I don’t owe anyone any political favours. My loyalty is to the people of Australia and the electorate of Hinkler.

USE YOUR VOTE EFFECTIVELY ON ELECTION DAY!

VOTING THE SAME AS WE ALWAYS HAVE WILL GET US MORE OF WHAT WE DON’T WANT!

My Commitment to You • I’m passionate about our agricultural, tourism, manufacturing and hospitality sectors, and the opportunities they offer to our region. • I will advocate for our farmers with strong federal policies such as the development of an ethanol industry which offers another revenue source for our farmers and provides an

environmentally friendly fuel which can be used in our existing cars. • I strongly support a 20% tax concession for people and businesses who live and work in our regional communities. • I will champion policies to get our businesses booming again and initiatives to reduce our energy costs. • We, the United Australia Party have sensible policies to reduce the $1 Trillion national debt. • I will seek a review of the Cashless Debit Card, and fight for real policies to address the increase in suicide rates, mental health issues, homelessness, job losses and financial hardships brought on by Government mandates. I, Kristie Nash and the UAP team will return people’s freedoms.

Key UAP Policies: • Cap interest rates on home loans to 3% • Cap fuel prices by freezing the excise

• Get everyone back to work - End vaccine mandates • Increase the age pension by $150 per week • Reduce energy prices • Solve labour shortages for our businesses and farmers • 20% tax cuts for businesses & employees in regional areas • Bring our national debt under control

About Me I’ve run businesses in e-commerce and consulting services, so I know what life is like in the REAL world. My mother was a schoolteacher and my father a manufacturing worker, so I certainly didn’t come from a privileged background. As an adult, I’ve always contributed to my local community by supporting those in need.

Gallery needs helpers Securing our water future BUILDING a ‘water grid’ connecting the Hervey Bay and Maryborough water schemes and a desalination plant would help provide long term water supply security for the Fraser Coast, a planning report prepared for Council has found.

Lenthalls Dam Hervey Bay Regional Gallery is set to open shortly and needs volunteers YOU DON’T need to know about art to be a volunteer at the Hervey Bay Regional Gallery. The refurbished gallery in the centre of Hervey Bay is scheduled to open in April and new gallery director Ashleigh Whatling is looking for volunteers to ensure visitors have the best experience possible. “You don’t need to be an artist or have a particular skill,” Ms Whatling said. “While we’d like to match the skills of volunteers with projects, there are a variety of tasks ranging from being on the front desk and welcoming people to the gallery to helping enter data to bring the information on our collection up to date.

“People with cabinet making or carpenter skills might like to help out with the unboxing and installation of exhibitions; or former teachers might like to help guide school groups through the gallery and run activities at events. “Whatever your skill we can find a place for you.” Unfortunately, the group of dedicated volunteers at the gallery dwindled when the gallery was closed for the refurbishment works. “We’d love to hear from previous volunteers. We have missed them and would love to see them come back,” Ms Whatling said. A bonus for volunteers is that they get to see the new exhibitions first as they help install the displays, and as they

learn about the exhibition to be able to answer questions from visitors. “Our aim is to have a get together before the refurbished gallery opens in April so the volunteers can meet the gallery team and each other,” she said. Volunteers help Council on several projects across the region. Volunteer groups include Community Environment Program, Friend of the Cemetery, Friends of the Brolga, Friends of the Fraser Coast Libraries, Gatakers Artspace and the Maryborough Story Bank. More information on how to become a volunteer is available on the Council webpage www.frasercoast.qld.gov.au/ community-services-volunteers

At a recent meeting, Council endorsed the ‘Fraser Coast Water Supply Security Strategy – Planning Report’ as a guiding document for future investment in the regional water network. The report was prepared by engineering company Cardno. “Council recognises that water is our most valuable resource, with water security planning revisited every five to seven years to ensure the latest data and technology is considered,” Councillor David Lee said. “This study has reassessed all the options for future water supplies, the costs, and when they will be required to ensure the community has continued water security. It also considered community expectations around the frequency and level of water restrictions.

KEY RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE REPORT: • Adopt a ‘Level of Service’ for the frequency and duration of water restrictions that meets community expectations; • Develop a demand management strategy to reduce water use per person; • Design and build a treated water interconnector (a water grid) between Maryborough and Hervey Bay by 2026 at an estimated cost of about $31m; and • Design and build a desalination plant capable of supplying 7.5 megalitres a day of treated water by 2036 at an estimated cost of $45m.

AIR CONDITIONING COMMERCIAL REFRIGERATION ELECTRICAL SPLIT SYSTEMS DUCTED AIR CONDITIONING

“The report found that a water grid and a desalination plant, combined with the continued use of water restrictions and the development of a demand management strategy, would ensure a secure, reliable and affordable water future for the Fraser Coast.” Cr Lee said extensive community consultation was undertaken as part of the study, including the establishment of a dedicated web page on Council’s Engagement Hub and the formation of a community engagement panel. “There were 191 responses to the online survey as well as feedback collected from information stalls at markets in Hervey Bay and Maryborough,” he said. “The results indicated that 57% of community members and 63% of panel members who completed the online survey were willing to have Level 2 water restrictions introduced every year to cut demand. “However, the community did not want higher levels of water restrictions as often, with the report recommending Level 3 water restrictions only occur once every five years and Level 4 water restrictions be limited to once every 40 years.”

During the investigation, Cardno also considered connecting to new surface water sources such as Paradise Dam, the Mary River scheme, Tinana Creek and Mary River Off-stream storage options; as well as taking groundwater from K’Gari (Fraser Island), raising Lenthalls Dam, and purified recycled water. However, the report found a Hervey Bay to Maryborough treated water interconnector and a desalination plant were the options that delivered the greatest benefit to the community in achieving the level of service objectives. Cr Lee said, “By connecting our two service areas into a single network, water can be pumped both to and from Maryborough and Hervey Bay.” “It will mean we would have a more resilient and efficient water supply network, as it would mean more use of the region’s water collection, treatment and storage assets.” “The report found that Fraser Coast residential water consumption is about 240 litres per person per day on average, compared with about 156 litres per person per day in southeast Queensland,” he said. “This shows there are opportunities for us to work with the community to reduce demand and use water more efficiently in our workplaces, homes and on our lawns and gardens. “It’s all about how we balance demand and costs to ensure we have a safe, reliable and secure water supply for all residents of the Fraser Coast now and into the future.” The Fraser Coast Water Supply Security Strategy – Planning Report will be available for viewing on the Council’s website at www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/ securing-water-future and www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/policiesand-publications

NEWSINBRIEF Pedestrian crossing improves safety It will be easier for students, parents, and teachers to reach the Pialba State School and Hervey Bay High School thanks to the installation of a new pedestrian crossings. “Work has started on a project to install the raised crossing in Watson Street,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. “The $437,000 project is part of Council’s Active Travel Strategy which aims to continually improve the safety of pedestrians as they move

around the region and are partly funded through the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants program. “Encouraging people to get out of their vehicles is an important part of our strategy for the region to minimise its carbon footprint and also helps improve the health of residents.” The project includes replacing the existing paved footpath along Beach Road from Watson Street to the Esplanade with a 2.5m wide concrete path and a raised concrete priority crossing over Watson Street. Transport and Main Roads Minister

Mark Bailey said investing in bikeriding projects was delivering positive benefits for local communities. “We know that, on average, every dollar we invest in bike-riding infrastructure will return nearly five dollars in economic benefit to Queensland with improved health outcomes, reduced traffic congestion, and lower transport costs,” Mr Bailey said. “That’s why the Queensland Government has committed $252 million in funding over the next four years to support and encourage bike riding across the state, including

projects across the Fraser Coast region, to improve facilities for locals and tourists alike.” Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari MP said it was important that as Hervey Bay grows, the local community embraces active transport options like cycling to move around our great environment. “I am pleased programs like the Queensland Government’s Cycle Network Local Government Grants Program are making Hervey Bay safer and more accessible to pedestrians,” Mr Tantari said. “This project will improve the

liveability of Hervey Bay and surrounds whilst providing an outlet for people to keep fit and healthy and enjoy our great region.”

Powering community groups Hervey Bay AFL & Cricket Club and Pialba Bowls Club were among nine community groups across the Hinkler region to share in over $65,000 of Government grants to help increase energy efficiency and reduce their power bills. Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt congratulated the successful local not-for-profit groups which received a grant from the Powering Communities Program. “Energy bills are often one of the biggest overheads for community organisations, and these grants have been a welcome boost,” Mr Pitt said. “These groups and organisations play an important role in our community. The more they can save on running costs, the better they can focus on meeting the needs of our local community. “Whether it’s…the Hervey Bay AFL and Cricket Club fostering a love of sport and physical activity, these groups can achieve more with lower power bills. “The Powering Communities Program provided funding of between $5,000 and $12,000 to install solar panels, replace lighting with LEDs, upgrade air conditioners or more energy efficient equipment like fridges and freezers. Applications for grants under the program opened in March 2021. Each Federal MP, with the assistance of a committee representing the local community, nominated projects and invited groups to apply for the grant funding. Hervey Bay state high schools to share the dignity HERVEY Bay State High School and Urangan State High School are among the four Fraser Coast schools to receive a Dignity Vending Machine, which provides access to free sanitary products at school. Hervey Bay State High School Principal Julie Learoyd said it was fabulous news that the school was a successful recipient of the initiative. “We are very happy to receive a Dignity Vending Machine for our school as an important extra support for our students and families, in addition to our existing programs to provide groceries and uniforms in cases of genuine need,” Ms Learoyd said. “One of the biggest barriers for young students is ‘having to ask’ for sanitary products, so the Dignity Vending Machine will provide dignity and privacy by allowing students to access what they need in a discrete way without having to ask someone.” Education Minister Grace Grace said the Palaszczuk Government was investing up to $2.5 million in a partnership with the Share the Dignity charity to provide 120 state and non-state schools across Queensland with a Dignity

Vending Machine. “Access to sanitary products and misplaced stigma around periods should never be barriers to learning,” said Ms Grace.

Bay Adrian Tantari said that as a father of a daughter, this is a great initiative for Hervey Bay students that gives access to sanitary products at school when needed. “The Palaszczuk Government has invested in safeguarding dignity for students who menstruate,” he said. “The availability of the Dignity Vending Machines will ensure that menstruating students will have access to sanitary products when

needed.” Founder of Share the Dignity, Rochelle Courtenay, welcomed the announcement of the successful schools. “Imagine a world where menstruation is not a barrier to education. I am so proud to see the installation of Dignity Vending Machines in Queensland schools to ensure students can easily access period products when they need them. “I am also excited to be able

to educate boys and girls on menstruation with Period Talk, our menstruation education program, which will help us create long term change and guide us towards a future where period is not a taboo word.” The first four Fraser Coast schools selected to receive a machine are Aldridge State High School; Hervey Bay State High School; Maryborough State High School; and Urangan State High School.

MANAGING a volunteerrun community theatre is so much more than providing opportunities for actors to be on the stage. Thanks to a grant to purchase new computers, the theatre can offer contemporary solutions and opportunities to work in a more digitised world. Hervey Bay’s Z-PAC Theatre has been offering the Arts community a progressive and creative outlet by providing the community with quality performances and entertainment for decades, but behind the scenes, over the past year, the management committee has been working hard to streamline processes and updating all management systems. The theatre received a grant of almost $5000 from Councillor David Lee and Mayor George Seymour’s discretionary funds towards purchasing a set of laptop computers for the management committee. “The theatre has upgraded its technological infrastructure, which means that we now operate in a digital space and have a far greater digital presence than we used to,” said President Katie O’Neill. The theatre has upgraded its website, show booking system, members portal, and all document handling is now cloud-based. “The computers allow us to work together as a management committee and communicate with each other;

Cr David Lee (centre) with some of the 2021 Z-PAC Committee it is all part of our digital linked infrastructure.” “But broader than that is that we wanted to create equal opportunity and a bit of equitability, with people being able to go for roles and work in roles so that they weren't dependent on the technology that they could afford themselves.” “We wanted to make sure that anyone could apply for a role in the management committee and had the tools and equipment they needed to do the role effectively without worrying about their personal budget,” said Ms O’Neill. Councillor David Lee said he was very supportive of the grant as he understood the benefits the theatre offered to the community and wanted to see it sustained into the future. “The theatre is an important part of our community; it adds value and offers a diverse

range to our community’s cultural offerings.” With a background in Law, Cr Lee said he was encouraged to get involved in acting as non verbal body language is essential in communications too. “I see theatrics as a really important skill; it’s good for people to get out, and it’s really good for people to develop confidence by getting up on the stage and memorising lines and projecting your voice,” said Cr Lee. Ms O’Neill added that the theatre is more than just a place of entertainment, “It’s a hub for people of like minds to connect; it creates social connection and opportunities for people of any age to learn a variety of new skills.” “It increases the wellbeing infrastructure of the community that we live in.”

Relish the day at the region’s biggest food and wine festival The Relish Food & Wine Festival returns to the Mary River Parklands and Queens Park, Maryborough for a delicious day of regional produce, impressive sessions and demonstrations – an afternoon of live entertainment with your beverage of choice in hand. The region’s most diverse foodie festival will take place on Saturday, 4 June 2022 between 10am and 5pm. An impressive entertainment lineup will be announced in the following weeks, including the list of celebrity chefs providing cooking demonstrations in the Food Lover’s Marquee. FCTE general manager Martin Simons said Relish was a fantastic event showcasing the region’s food and wine offerings. “The venue on the banks of the Mary River bathed in winter sunshine, with room for families to spread out and take in the festival vibe, is an event not to be missed. “Relish has been an important signature celebration on the Fraser Coast calendar since 2013 and has grown from strength to strength. “We have listened to public feedback and this year we have adopted an expanded festival footprint to include both Queens Park and the Mary River Parklands, taking the best of both locations into the full seven-hour program”.

SESSIONS RETURNING The 2022 program will include the return of ticketed sessions along with an event, ‘Paint & Sip’ hosted by Gin & Gesso in the gardens of Portside Café and Restaurant. Returning this year is local fine-dining restaurant, Odyssey Bistro with their session ‘Odyssey Food & Cocktail Journey’ showcasing some of the Fraser Coasts’ regional farms and distilleries, with the aim of creating the perfect food and drink pairing. MKR celebrity chefs, Dan and Steph Mulheron will introduce festivalgoers to their Pigs, Pots & Pinot creation – a celebration of the couple’s favourite food and wine. Session guests will enjoy a unique three-course meal curated and hosted by the celebrity couple. “We are thrilled to be showcasing what our region has to offer at Relish 2022!

Being around like-minded local producers who have a passion for food excites us,” said Steph, a co-owner of Eat at Dan and Steph’s and a Fraser Coast Tourism Ambassador. Portside Café and Restaurant will host ‘Champagne High Tea’ for those looking to enjoy elegant, handcrafted sweets and sandwiches paired with a glass of champagne, espresso coffee and looseleaf tea selection. With views overlooking the Mary River and Queens Park, festivalgoers will learn from “Portside Mary” about the origins and etiquette of the High Tea in a heritage listed setting. Festivalgoers can pre-order a ‘Cheese and Charcuterie’ platter from Maryborough’s own specialty deli, MAD Providore. The single serve platter includes a selection of cheeses, charcuterie, antipasto, fruit & nuts; only

available by pre-ordering. It wouldn’t be a Relish Food & Wine Festival without the ‘Blues and Brews Cruise’ and ‘Twilight River Cruise’ hosted by the Hervey Bay Boat Club. With various sessions, the ‘Blues and Brews Cruise’ will meander along the Mary River while serving craft beers, a selection of wines or a refreshing alcoholic ginger beer. Guests are encouraged to enjoy the soulful entertainment and tuck into the included cheese tasting platter. The ‘Twilight River Cruise’ will chaperone festivalgoers back to Hervey Bay on a threehour cruise, offering chilled beverages and the sights of a Fraser Coast sunset. FOOD VENDORS WANTED The Fraser Coast Events team is on the lookout for market and food vendors. Labor candidate throws in hat for Hinkler seat

FORMER army captain Jason Scanes has been announced as the Federal Labor candidate for the seat of Hinkler. Understanding the importance of leadership, Mr Scanes told the Advertiser, “Putting the needs of others first is what service to country and community means.” He aims to deliver a better future for the people of Hinkler. “My proven service to our community means I will always be on your side,” said Mr Scanes. The ex-serviceman grew up in a working-class family, a farming family in western NSW. At age 18, he enlisted in the Australian Regular Army and rose through the ranks from Digger to Warrant Officer before being selected for commissioning to the rank of Captain. Mr Scanes served on multiple operations, most recently in Afghanistan, and has been awarded numerous awards, including the Army Commendation Medal from the United States. As a Fellow of the Institute of Managers and Leaders, Mr Scanes continues to actively serve the community including as a member of the QLD Premier’s Wide Bay Burnett Fraser Coast Regional

Jason Scanes Community Forum Group and Veteran Advocate and Ambassador to the ‘Aussie Vets for PTSD’ charity. He believes his commitment and dedication to the community demonstrates his understanding of the importance of earning a fair day’s wage, delivering proper funding for our hospitals and schools, and creating secure local jobs. Mr Scanes equally understands that the rising costs of living is creating a

barrier for people to access good healthcare and housing across the Hinkler electorate. Announcing Labor’s newest candidate, Queensland Senator Anthony Chisholm said Mr Scanes would be a strong voice for Hinkler in Canberra. “I know Jason, and I know he will ensure his community get a better future by delivering secure jobs, access to health care and better access to education and skills,” said Senator Chisholm.

On the ball … Fraser Coast former Deputy Mayor Darren Everard, Alec Wilson Senior Technical Manager Central Region Football Queensland and Brisbane Roar CEO David Pourre check out the fields at the Fraser Coast Sport and Recreation Precinct. QUEENSLAND’S premier football team, the Brisbane Roar, will visit the Fraser Coast for a training camp and an exhibition game in August. “The regular visits by the Roar help build our reputation as a premier regional Queensland football hub,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. “The games are also a great treat for local football enthusiasts.” The club was extremely pleased to return to the Fraser Coast, Brisbane Roar CEO David Pourre said. “We have a very strong relationship with the Fraser Coast Regional Council and young players through the Skills Training Centre we have set up here.”

The exhibition game, which will be free to watch, will be very popular, Cr Seymour said. “More than 3,000 spectators turned out to watch the previous fixture,” he said. The Roar will play a Wide Bay team made up of topranking players from the Fraser Coast league. “The game and the training camp have many benefits for the region. It is an opportunity for Fraser Coast players to access top-of-the-line coaching and mentoring from the Roar as well as focussing attention on the facilities at the Fraser Coast Sport and Recreation Precinct,” formerr Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said. The visit is part of a threeyear sponsorship agreement between the Roar and the

Fraser Coast Regional Council. Under the agreement the Brisbane Roar has established a Skills Training Centre at the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct to help develop talented footballers between Gympie and Mackay. “By attracting state and national teams and fixtures to the Fraser Coast, Council helps develop the skills of locals through coaching clinics, mentoring programs, participation in exhibition matches and just being able to watch games involving elite athletes,” Cr Everard said. “The visit is also an opportunity for sporting clubs to attract members and increase community participation in sport.”

NEWSINBRIEF Dog registration inspection program starting soon Fraser Coast dog owners have been praised for their good behaviour with less than 10 per cent of owners yet to reregister their pets. “Council issued just over 20,000 dog registration notices last year and about 3,000 owners did not respond, but after we sent out reminder notices recently, there are now only 1750 unpaid registrations,” Cr Zane O’Keefe said. Council approved the annual dog

registration inspection program to start on 4 May and run through to the end of October. Council staff and contractors conducting the inspections will visit homes across the region between 7am and 5pm Monday to Saturday. While officers hope to complete the inspection without having to enter a property, they do have power under the Animal Management (Cats and Dogs) Act 2008 to enter a property. Cr O’Keefe said registering animals had benefits for owners. “If an animal is found wandering or is taken to the pound, registered

dogs can be reunited with their owners very quickly,” he said. “It is harder to reunite dogs with their owners when they are unregistered or not microchipped, or the information on the microchip is out of date. “It is important those details are kept up to date with Council and the group which holds their pet’s microchip data. “And remember, if you have a new dog, registration is free the first time you register your animal in the Fraser Coast region.” Owners found with an unregistered

dog are liable for the $275 fine, as well as the cost of registration. Dog registration fees help pay for animal management staff; as well as provide education programs and facilities such as the two pounds, fenced off-leashed areas and free doggy doo bags that are placed in dispensers along the foreshore and puppy playgrounds. If you have not reregistered you pet, or your pet’s details have changed, especially if it has passed away, please contact Council on 1300 79 49 29 and talk to a Customer Service Officer.

New playground for River Heads New equipment will replace aged equipment in the Bingham Park playground beside the River Heads Hall with the existing playground to be removed from its current location and a new one installed to the east. “Youngsters get such joy going to the park,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. The $72,000 project will involve removing the existing playground from its current location and installing a new one to the east. It is expected take five weeks to complete from start of April, weather permitting. “The project is part of our regular asset replacement program which has also allowed us to do some remodeling to improve the function of the open space around the hall,” Cr Seymour said. “By moving the fenced playground, we will create an open area in front of the hall entrance that can be used for ceremonies and events such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. “The park equipment was showing its age and requiring more frequent maintenance; trees had lifted the playground fencing and the slab for the basketball hoop had been damaged by vehicles accessing the hall or setting up for functions in the grounds. “The changes are a win-win for the local community. Children will have a new playground while there also be a better open space for local ceremonies and events.” The project also includes the installation of a new all-abilities accessible drinking fountain adjacent to the existing shelter and playground.

At its meeting this week (Wednesday, March 23), Fraser Coast Regional Council awarded a $1.25 million tender from Kellogg Brown and Root Pty Ltd to design the project. “Hervey Bay is continuing to grow. To accommodate the growth, there is the need to increase the city’s capacity to treat sewage, including the recycled water reuse system,” Councillor Darren Everard said. “Currently the Pulgul sewage treatment plant performs well, but it is running at about 90% of its design capacity. “The proposed plant upgrade will increase the treatment capacity to 10 megalitres a day to a Class A recycled water quality. “This is a great opportunity to embrace the latest wastewater treatment technology to ensure we have the best environmental outcomes available.” The Hervey Bay catchment is anticipated to grow by 12,400 dwellings by 2031. The project is part of Council’s commitment to ensuring the region’s treatment systems operate at the highest standard. New GM at Port City Autos underpins local first

WHEN Gavin Fletcher was appointed General Manager at Port City Autos at the start of the year, it was the dream job for the self-confessed car nut. His first foray into the motoring world came by way of the Holden dealership in Gladstone. He was operating a motel at the time with his wife Verena, and she suggested he might benefit from doing something more during the day. He walked across the road to apply for the job, as a new car salesperson. He said no, I don’t sell cars. Verena sent him back to say yes. That was the beginning of a seventeen year-long pedigree in the car industry that he took to immediately. You could say it was his calling. “When I first entered the industry, I had a sales manager that took me under his wing and showed me how to deal with people, in an old school mentor way; how to put myself in the customer’s shoes and how to solve a problem for them. “That is the type of outlook I have here, where we train for maximum customer satisfaction and we execute that.” “With knowledge comes confidence.” Despite having worked for some of the region’s largest selling brands, he will be the first to tell you, he was not the most qualified applicant for the General Managers role at Port City Autos. “Applications came in from all over Australia for the position here and you would expect that to be the case. “Hervey Bay is a booming area and offers exceptional lifestyle opportunities. “I didn’t know it at the time, but the new

owner here was looking for something different than just a gleaming resume,” Gavin said. “Port City Autos has recently changed hands to become a family-owned business with a real focus on culture and supporting the local community. “I was already working on staff here, so I penned a note to the new owner Michael Gleeson, outlining some visions for the future here. “It wasn’t an application, it just came from a place of wanting to truly help someone who was investing in the town I love.” “He offered me the job, which says volumes for the passion he has for local first and establishing a new future for not

only Port City Autos but other business interests they are looking to bring to the city.” Gavin believes the biggest asset in business is people skills; and that is especially prevalent today with the younger generation. “You have to move with the times and provide not just an amazing experience for customers but also for your staff and team members.” “I am so excited and energised for this new chapter in my professional life. “I am fortunate enough to have a wonderful network of people in Hervey Bay and when you get the opportunity to help drive a growing business like this one, it’s a great journey to be on.”

NEWSINBRIEF Hot Rod and Custom Car Show

After missing two years because of COVID and then the town being flooded twice this year, the Maryborough and Hervey Bay car club communities are looking forward to this year’s Conrodders Campout and Hot Rod show to be held on the Easter weekend 15 to 17 April. A large collection of Street Rods and Customs will be attending for the Friday and Saturday closed events followed by a Public Show and Shine on Easter Sunday at the Maryborough Showgrounds. Organisers said there would be hundreds of beautiful collectible vehicles on display and in attendance over the weekend and at the main event The Campout will also be held at the Maryborough Showgrounds. Proudly supporting Riding For the Disabled Hervey Bay and Maryborough charity. For more information visit www.conroddersherveybay.org.au
