RALLY FOR A CAUSE is a community charity proudly raising funds to support families and individuals affected by life-limiting medical conditions or have had their lives disrupted by circumstances beyond their control. Starting on the Fraser coast in 2015, Rally for a Cause has raised over $1.3 million for families and individuals in the Fraser Coast region and has assisted over 106 recipient families with much needed equipment and/or financial support. The work of the charity is made possible by funds raised through the DUNGA DERBY, a car rally that sees up to 55 team vehicles from the Fraser Coast, up to 30 teams from the Sunshine Coast and approximately 300 people take part in a 4 day adventure travelling from the Coast to the Country. In the lead up to the derby the teams will fundraise with loads of events throughout that time everything from raffles, gala dinners, sportsman luncheons, barefoot bowls to BBQ’s! The local communities will be buzzing with activity and businesses are encouraged to get behind the event, sponsoring teams and their vehicles (the Dungas!)

GORGEOUS gowns sitting in the back of cupboards are getting a new lease on life for teenagers heading to their high school formals with a new community project to help families with the exorbitant cost of the events. ‘The Gift of the Gown Wide Bay’ is a service offering donated formal wear for high schoolers to use at no cost to the families. The free hire project has been started in the Wide Bay by grandmother and mother of three, Sharon Graham as a desire to see every girl who wanted to attend formal have access to a beautiful dress, regardless of their family’s income. “Over the years I have seen the struggle that families go through with the expense of a formal,” said Ms Graham. Ms Graham said, “I have known of kids who haven’t attended their formal because they just are not able to afford it; I would hate the thought of any young person in our

She said she gratefully welcomed all formal related donations, including gowns; shoes; clutches; jewellery; hair accessories; new make up and perfume, and suits and accessories for boys. “I have also been blessed with offers of services for hair make up and nails; if you are able to offer a service or discount, I will work with you to ensure it gets where it is needed.” She said she saw the idea had been doing well on the Gold Coast and decided to get in touch with program organiser Carol Millar for advice on how to set it up here, “Carol was wonderful in helping me get the program up and running it here.” Ms Graham said all formal wear would be dry cleaned before being hired out. The program will be available from the end of May. People will be able to make bookings for personalised appointments through the ‘Gift of the Gown – Wide Bay’ Facebook Page.

community not attend formal due to expenses.” Ms Graham has collected around 200 formal dress in all colours, styles and sizes with the hope to gather close to 700. The collection of formal wear is available to all Year 12 students in the Wide Bay area struggling with the associated costs. Currently operating from her home in Childers, Ms Graham said the location is central enough to cover Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Bundaberg, Childers and surrounding areas. “I’ve had a woman contact me from Brisbane saying she was keen to travel to Childers for a dress!” Ms Graham said she was overwhelmed with the support she has received from the community, “This program wouldn’t be possible without the support and donations that have been given so generously by our community.” “Every item I have has been donated with love.”

Council caravan park revamp LARGER sites and dogfriendly spaces are among the key features of a $17m plan to redevelop the four beachfront caravan parks operated by the Fraser Coast Regional Council. In a recent meeting, Council adopted master plans for the Burrum Heads and Scarness Beachfront Tourist Parks. “The infrastructure and services in the parks were designed for a different era and have reached the end of their working life,” Cr Wellings said. “The master plans were developed in consultation with holiday makers so we could understand their needs and aspirations. “Funding for the redevelopment of the four beachfront caravan parks has been included in Council’s long term Capital Program with the works to occur over the next five years, starting with Scarness where work is already underway.” As part of the development of the master plans, surveys were made available online and emailed to more than 3100 guests who had previously stayed at either Burrum Heads or Scarness Beachfront Tourist Parks. Comment was sought through articles on the Caravan Parks Association of Queensland’s Let’s Go Caravan and Camping website, the Fraser Coast Chambers of Commerce, mail outs to residents and businesses adjacent to the parks and at Fraser Coast Visitor Information Centres. Under the master plans, the number of sites at the Burrum Heads and Scarness parks will be cut by up to 30% to allow for bigger sites. “Making the sites larger, and offering dog-friendly spaces,
will improve our ability to attract more users across the year which will offset losses from the reduction in sites,” Cr Wellings said. “We are listening to the feedback we have received. Visitors want larger sites to accommodate the increase in travelling families who require larger caravans and therefore more room.” The master plans were developed by SGL Consultants and include implementation plans to stage the works. The Pialba and Burrum Heads parks were considered the most suitable for allowing dogs, subject to having appropriate terms and conditions in place. The consultants recommended that the western end of the Pialba park, which had no direct adjacent neighbours, was suitable for dog-friendly sites. At Burrum Heads, the consultants recommended that dog-friendly sites be restricted to the southern section of the Park, particularly those adjacent to the supermarket and vehicle service lane. The report recommended against dogs at the Scarness and Torquay parks because they are in areas where there is greater public activity which increased potential for dogs to bark. As a response to a rise in safety concerns of visitors to the Pialba caravan park Cr Wellings told the Advertiser the Council would be looking at ways to improve security for that park in particular. “Recent events and the negative publicity it has got have started a really good conversation for us in Council,” said Cr Wellings. “Council is upgrading all four

She said the director was currently working with the management company of the caravan parks for interim security solutions at the Pialba caravan park. “We urge visitors to lock their things up, no matter what caravan park they’re staying at, no matter where they are because it’s a thing that happens everywhere and it’s something we should all be more diligent about.” “Opportunistic thieves are

For the past 12 years we have offered an annual vision screening program to most schools in Hervey Bay. All grade 1 & grade 4 students are offered FREE screening by Richard Watt Optometrist. About 1,000 students per year take part in the program and all recieve a report. Those who fail the test recieve a recommendation for a full eye examination by a behavioral or developmental optometrist who is active in that industry and interested in children’s vision. We do not receive any subsidies, we do it because we care about eye health.

HERVEY House was filled with beaming faces on Thursday, April 29, where over 30 not-for-profit organisations, sporting groups and individuals received a share of over $200,000 at the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants presentations. Community Engagement Office Sarah Bailey Wilkinson said the grants celebrate and support individual achievements and those charities doing incredible work in the Hervey Bay region, with many unable to stay afloat without the RSL’s financial support. “We know how tough it is for local not-for-profit groups, community groups and individuals, to get assistance and they are the ones that are serving the community and volunteering their time for the betterment of the region,” Mrs Bailey Wilkinson said. “The program was developed to ensure financial grants are spread amongst a range of deserving applicants through the supply of not only donations but in-kind donations and the use of the club’s facilities.” The most substantial grant awarded on the day was $30,000 to the Fraser Coast Chaplaincy Program. The RSL Bay Alley and RSL Bub Hub & Playground, as part of The Neighbourhood Hive, received $10,000 to help establish a ‘messy’ community space where locals can try something new, connect with
All RSL grant program recipients were awarded at a recent presesentation at the RSL’s Hervey House like-minded people. Tanya Stevenson, Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre CEO said, “We are so thankful to Hervey Bay RSL, along with other Fraser Coast businesses and community groups, for supporting our exciting new venture, The Neighbourhood Hive.” “This support is crucial to making this ‘messy community centre’ a reality and we can’t wait to start welcoming members of the community in.” “Bay Alley will be an outdoor laneway space, perfect for casual meetings, networking and youth-focused events and the Bub Hub will be a space where young families can borrow essential items for babies, including cots and strollers.” “The Neighbourhood Hive is accelerating towards its grand opening on 7 May, when it will become a hub for innovation,
learning and skills sharing, right in the heart of Hervey Bay,” said Ms Stevensen. Fraser Coast Mates was successful in a $9,600 grant towards costs for a Content Coordinator role with the aim of increasing communication across its social media and website. The organisation was formed in 2016 by a group of local business people concerned by the rise of debilitating mental health issues and rising suicide rates, especially in men across the region. Fraser Coast Mates President Darren Bosley said, “We have an opportunity as a community to provide an environment to reduce the stigma to speak up and encourage conversations. We underestimate the power of having good communication and focussing on being a good listener...it can save a life.” “There is never enough support for the growing
rates in suicide but we also know everyone responds differently to the variety of treatments available; that road to recovery will possibly have setbacks but for those who need our support, let’s seek out the many options and constantly check in with your mate.” Other recipients include $5300 to Hervey Bay Touch Association, $3000 to Meals on Wheels Fraser Community, $4450 to Pialba Bowls Club, $3000 to Cosmos Netball Club, $500 to the Hervey Bay Parkinson’s Support Group, $500 to Hervey Bay Art Society, and many more. Mrs Bailey Wilkinson also gave special thanks to patrons who support the club because while they’re having a good time out, they are also helping to give back to the Fraser Coast Community through these grants. “Whether you’re in the

Taking care of land and sea together CELEBRATING the earth and keeping our marine park clean was the aim of a volunteer group who cleaned up Weenandin (Round Island) recently. Jacqui and Wil Hikuwai from Hervey Bay Eco Marine Tours honoured Butchulla Land and Sea Country by donating their time and resources by arranging a free event for volunteers to clean up the island. A boatload of about 26 people aged between five and 78 years went over to the tiny island, located about 15 minutes offshore, on the morning of Australia Day. “We decided to do it on Australia Day because it’s always a bit of an uneasy day for some and we did not want to make money out of Butchulla country on this day so we decided to do something a bit more positive for country,” said Ms Hikuwai. She said they collected 50 bags of unnatural growth on the island, including weeds such as prickly pear, “We cleared a lot of it; it was fantastic.” “It was such a good day; the vibe was amazing, it was brilliant.” “I was so proud of the Hervey Bay community and the spirit displayed; people were all getting along with each other, laughing and having a bit of fun; it was beautiful.”

Ms Hikuwai said they posted about the free event on the Eco Marine Tours Facebook page and were overwhelmed with the responses; they needed to create a waiting list. “It was such a great community involvement; people came over with their kids helping too.” The Hikuwai’s provided a free sausage, drinks and boat ride to the volunteers. She said the Council supplied gloves and bags, which they distributed on the day. “Some had a swim afterwards because it was a hot day.” Ms Hikuwai said they clean the island each time they visited, “but we think it needs a big clean about every three months.” She said people sometimes visit the island and leave cans and bottles which washes out to the ocean. “I would love to see people take a bit more responsibility

Meet national champion swimmer THE FUTURE looks bright for Hervey Bay’s national swimming age champion, Xavier Metcalfe. Determination and drive saw the 14 year old take home gold in the recent 2021 Australian Age Championships on the Gold Coast and becoming the Australian Boys 14 year old Age Champion. The Fraser Coast Anglican College student said it felt very special to win the 1500 metre freestyle race, “To be honest, I didn’t think I was going to win a gold medal; I was feeling pretty confident about placing.” He described the gold winning race by saying, “A massive PB (personal best) came out of nowhere and it got me a gold medal!” This was Metcalfe’s first national competition where he swam in eight races and received a silver medal for 800 metres freestyle. “I train all year round; except for a break at the moment, I usually do about nine, one and a half to two hour sessions a week.” He said, “I do a bit more training than the others as I’m a distance swimmer as well.” “I’ve always been interested in swimming.” When asked about the secret of his success in doing so well, he said, “Dedication to training and listening to the coach. Preparing for the race is very important.” He said he felt very fortunate
Meet the Australian Boys 14 year old Age Champion, Xavier Metcalfe to have such great support from his coach, parents and friends, “Even my teachers have been supportive with assessments.” “I want to take swimming as far as I can, even if it’s not to be professional, I’ll keep swimming even if it’s just for fitness.” He said one of the highlights of competing in the Gold
Coast recently was getting to know his competitors from different states. “Being on the Gold Coast was good because it was right next to the beach.” “I think dedication and your love for the sport is really important in succeeding and training alongside friends as well,” said Metcalfe. Metcalfe has been swimming
with coach Marcus Elder since he was six years old. Mr Elders said, “It’s a fantastic achievement; I’m really happy for him.” “He’s worked very hard for a number of years to get to the level that he’s at the moment.” “He was very trainable from an early age; he’s easy to train as he understands his body and when we need to make changes to techniques, he picks them up quickly and he’s a willing worker.” “He happily does the work and doesn’t have to be pushed too much.” He said it was the first time in a while that the club had won medals at the national championships, motivating the rest of the kids in the club. Mr Elder said Amy Daddow and Alix Woods from the Fraser Coast Swim Club joined Metcalfe and set several personal bests in the Age Championships. All three made qualifying times for next year’s event. Proud mother Kyleigh Piggford-Metcalfe said, “Xavier has always been driven in everything he does, whether it’s school, music or other sports.” “Very proud of his achievements and happy for him. It’s everything you train for and it doesn’t always happen.” She said she hoped he got the most out of everything he wanted to achieve and had no regrets for the future.

She had a strong understanding of the market and when we were willing to lower our asking price, she encouraged us to hold strong, thankfully she did. Jana was able to secure a buyer for our asking price. Even contacting our buyers realestate agents who were selling their property, to make sure that all would go smoothly. She loved our property and showcased it well. She even gave great advice for the purchase of our next property which was through a different realestate agency. Not your typical mothers, celebrated MOTHERS can come in all forms. To celebrate this year’s Mother’s Day, we would like to acknowledge the contribution foster mothers play in caring for the children at risk in our community. Foster care mothers and fathers provide respite, emergency, short and long term care for children who can’t live with their own families. The Advertiser interviewed two foster mothers to share their perspectives on mothering these children. Rachael Brookes, biological mother to four children and foster mother to countless children over the past six years, said she loved knowing that their family has been able to offer a safe place for children in need. Ms Brookes said at one point, they had nine children in the house for about 18 months; last year they had seven foster children. “The longest we’ve had a child is four years; they are still with us and will be for quite some time.” Their family takes children spanning from a few days up to a few years. She said she is advocating for the foster care system to allow people to eventually adopt the children on a permanent basis in Queensland. “It’s a goal that lots of foster carers have; to be able to adopt the children, but the closest we can get to it is permanency carer orders.” The former school teacher said, “We build these lovely bonds with these children; they become just like our own, and we want to see the best for these children and know they’re being raised in a safe home and loved.” Ms Brookes said she was inspired to become a foster carer from her own positive experience of being cared for by a foster carer.
“When I was 14 years old, a lovely lady took me in and I did my final high school years with her; she became a very big part of my family and is a grandmother figure to my own children now.” “No matter what trauma someone has been through, if someone is there for them; to help guide and give them a safe environment and love, then it can make a big difference to their lives,” said Ms Brookes. “Being a foster parent is not all sunshine and roses; it’s probably one of the most difficult jobs I have done,” said Ms Brooke. She said one of the biggest Foster mothers Rachael Brookes and Kathryn Rodda children far outweigh the challenges. challenges was dealing One of the rewarding experiences with the strict rules in place by the Ms Brookes experienced was watching department of child safety and the a child’s confidence grow at school, restrictions is places on the families. “At first she was very down on herself “It can take a lot of time to get permission to allow kids to participate and had low self worth but it was amazing to see her step up, stand in activities and unfortunately, in front of her school and become sometimes they miss out if it’s classed a school leader; it still gives me as a high risk activity.” goosebumps.” “We all have the same goal of “The effort, hours, tears, tantrums reunifying a child if it’s possible and and everything that went into that if safe, so they can go back to their snowballed as she became more birth families and have support they involved in school activities that she need but the journey to get there is never thought she could or would do.” challenging.” “It was special to be able to watch As expected, there are challenging her share that experience with her behaviours of the children to deal biological parents as well; they were with, “Every behaviour is a need; it’s invited.” just finding what that need is; for the She said the experience has been most part it is security.” beneficial to her family as a whole too, “Kids will act out, and you think “It has taught my children empathy they are pushing you away but and compassion for difference; they actually they are testing you to see will stand up and fight for the right of whether you’ll stay.” the kids, even if it’s only at home!” The rewards for caring for these
Kathryn Rodda and her family have been foster carers for the past four years for mainly babies and toddlers. “We love children and have always had a heart to help children,” said Ms Rodda. “We have three children of our own and when they were old enough, we decided it was time to do fostering; we do it as a whole family.” “You’re giving a child a safe place, and you’re giving them a family that will love them and keep them safe and what we class as a normal life.” She said it had been mostly a positive experience for her family but there have been times where the children have clashed, “Sometimes these kids have trauma histories and challenging behaviours so it can be tricky, but it teaches compassion and understanding.” She said her own children have benefitted a lot from the experience as well as being great helpers, “They have been teaching the foster children how to talk to each other nicely and how to play games.” “My children have learnt other skills too; I have a 15 year old boy who changes nappies without being asked!” She said, “My kids understand that other kids are not as fortunate in their upbringing as they are.” She said the reality of caring for kids with trauma history and how they react to situations has been quite different from what she was expecting. Ms Rodda explained that some of
these children had not had bonding experiences with their biological parents even at an early age and had trouble forming attachments to their new foster families. “It amazes me how important cuddling and rocking babies and toddlers in those first few months is for setting them up for the rest of their lives.” She said her biggest surprise from their experiences was realising how much of an impact lack of affection had on a child, “We often think it takes years of neglect to have an effect, but it can be just a short time to cause issues later on.” Ms Rodda said in the future they would like to help teenage mums break the cycle of foster care by teaching parenting skills to these young mothers. “I don’t think fostering is for everyone; I think you have to have a heart for it but I do believe that everyone can help in some way.” She said people could become respite carers to help relive the full time carers, “They know they can’t do it full time but they’re willing to open their homes to help other carers out; to give them a break and refresh, which is very important,” said Ms Rodda. People interested in becoming these kinds of short-term respite carers still need to complete training and go through an approval process. There are other ways for people to become involved without going through the approval process. Ms Rodda said the foster carers always welcomed cooked meals and grocery vouchers, “Especially when taking on a new child; having someone drop off a meal can be very helpful.”

Retired rugby league great Cameron Smith will be a guest speaker at the first Advertiser Club event AFTER fifteen years of bringing some of Australia’s highest profile celebrities to Hervey Bay, the highly supported local business networking club, The Indy Foundation was a casualty of COVID last year. Hervey Bay Advertiser publisher Malcolm Quinn, the founder of the Indy Foundation in 2006, is excited to be re-launching the concept again for 2021/2022. “When we launched The Indy Foundation in July of 2006, our ambitious project centred around supporting the community through a series of celebrity events over the course of the year, as well as providing our valued advertising clients with a complete solution to meet their advertising, entertainment and networking needs, in one innovative weekly bundle”. “The next ten years became a whirlwind ride with some of Australia’s highest profile sporting, business, political and entertainment figures calling Hervey Bay home, at least for one night”. By the time The Hervey Bay Independent was acquired by APN News and Media in 2015, the Indy Foundation
had well and truly delivered on its community focus, with over $850,000 raised for local charity, community and notfor-profit groups, through cash and in-kind donations. “Whilst we had sold the Hervey Bay Independent in 2015, we retained management over the Indy Foundation experience for the next five years, right up until its closure last year,” Mr Quinn said. “News Corporation took over ownership of The Hervey Bay Independent in late 2017, at a time when the community benefit of the Indy Foundation had reached a staggering $1M since its inception.” Mr Quinn said, “It was important work, and they grew the membership base during their tenure, which was a great result. I would also like to acknowledge the support of News for the re-launch”. “Between 2018 and 2020, we worked closely with News Corporation to launch a further ten client club’s attached to regional newspapers, just like The Indy Foundation, all over the country; it all started here in Hervey Bay.” “That community benefit was reaching $1M a year.
Fifty magical events a year entertaining 10,000 people. The movement was growing”. Surge in searches
Fraser Coast librarian Kellie is one of several staff waiting to assist people in their family history searches EXTRA time at home during the COVID in 2020 saw a surge in requests for people to start researching their family history. Statistics compiled by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages (RBDM) show family history purchases soared by 22 percent over the course of the year said Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman. “Last year we saw a spike of almost 40 per cent in purchases of family history from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, the biggest request was for images and death registrations,” Ms Fentiman said. Queenslanders can also access images or copies of certificates for births that took place more than 100 years ago and for marriages that took place more than 75 years ago. “History is literally at our fingertips. With the rise of genealogy sites such as Ancestry.com and social
media, Queenslanders are able to research their family history easier and faster,” Ms Fentiman said. “Queensland started compulsory registration of life events – births, deaths and marriages – in 1856, but holds some records dating back to 1829.” Searches through RBDM are free but there is a small cost for images of documents and historical certificates. Information about family history searches can be found at www.familyhistory.bdm.qld. gov.au/ Fraser Coast Libraries also encourages residents to use the free materials and services available to explore local history and research their own family origins. Regional librarian Tara Webb said there was a wealth of information people could access online through the libraries website www.frasercoast.qld.gov. au/libraries and YouTube channel www.youtube.com/c/
FraserCoastLibraries “Everyone can see amazing old photos in the libraries’ V Gallery; watch black-andwhite video footage filmed by Channel 7 between 1965 and 1975 and hear locals share their experiences of the past,” she said. “Our physical local history collection includes maps, plans, manuscripts, newspapers, books and more. “Staff can help guide people through the items we have available.” Ms Webb said anyone looking into their family tree had special access to the library edition of Ancestry.com from home until June 30. “People also have the option of coming into Hervey Bay library where volunteers are available to help them research their ancestors. “Hervey Bay Family History Association volunteers are ready to lend a hand from 9am until 2.45pm each Monday to Saturday.”

THE FIRM WORDS with Melissa Guilfoyle
It is better that ten guilty persons escape than that one innocent suffer The Blackstone Ratio is a principle underpinning the law in Australia and many other Countries that have foundations in British common law. This is commonly associated with the principles of the presumption of innocence, which places the burden on the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. This is incorporated into the Universal declaration of Human Rights, which we have accepted here in Australia. This is a topic that causes plenty of debate, but this is my take on it from the perspective of a Solicitor that practices in Criminal Law. The Blackstone ratio means that as a society, we value the protection of innocence more than we value the punishment of guilt. Protecting innocence includes ensuring that the entire process, from the investigation, the execution of search warrants, the arrest and to the Court has been undertaken strictly in accordance with the Law. My job is to make sure that the process is followed, that the process is fair and that the correct information is placed before the Court. It is the Judge and/or Jury who determine firstly whether someone is
– Blackstone Ratio
guilty beyond a reasonable doubt and secondly, what the appropriate punishment should be if they are found or plead guilty. Whilst you may hear someone say “they got off on a technicality”, there are no ‘technicalities’ in a criminal process. If a step has been missed, or not followed properly, there is a risk that an innocent person could inadvertently be punished. The rules are in place to protect the innocent, not to provide a ‘loophole’ for guilt. We as a society have determined that a breach of those protections of innocence is more manifestly unjust than any guilty person that may avoid punishment because the rules were not followed. In my role as a Defence Lawyer, my job is fundamentally to protect innocence. Where there is an admission or finding of guilt, then it is my job to help the Court to determine the most appropriate punishment based on all the facts and circumstances and in accordance with the Law. If you have been charged with a criminal offence and you need some advice, call The Firm to book in a consultation with one of our Solicitors.

Is ‘rock star’ whale Migaloo back? WHALE watchers along the Australian coastline have been excited by a possible sighting of the famous elusive, white humpback whale, Migaloo a few weeks back. Migaloo’s official social media accounts stated that a white whale had been spotted. Macquarie University marine scientist Vanessa Pirotta said a whale that could be Migaloo was spotted off Cape Schanck in Victoria on April 9 — but whether it was definitely him was a "million-dollar question". Migaloo was first spotted in 1991, near Hervey Bay, and has fascinated people the world over since then as they hope to see him on his annual migration to the warmer northern waters. While the whale season usually does not kick off until July, some early whale sightings have been reported in NSW already, raising the question of whether they’re coming early this year. Queenslanders are being encouraged to keep their eyes peeled as humpback whales make their annual migration along the east coast, with many of the state’s national parks the perfect viewing platform. Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said more than 25,000 whales are expected to swim past Queensland from now until November as the whales travel from and return to the southern ocean. “Whales will be here to calve
and breed, so it’s important that you give them space,” Ms Scanlon said. “Our national parks are a great way to see the annual migration but also give them the room they need – it’s part of the reason why we’re investing more than $50 million to upgrade them. “For example, Hervey Bay, in the Great Sandy Marine Park, is a sheltered bay where whales can spend weeks between August and November with their young calves. Ms Scanlon encouraged families over coming months to book accommodation right along the Queensland coast, experience local attractions and make time to see the whales along the coastlines of Queensland’s national parks. “Not only is it a great way to spend time with the family
– you’re also helping to inject more than $2.6 billion into the economy and support 17,240 jobs at a time when we need them most.” Department of Environment and Science Senior Marine Scientist Dr Justin Meager urged boaties in particular to be wary of whales migrating and to be safe when heading out onto the water. Humpbacks swim along the coast day and night at this time and can surface without warning, and are known to nudge boats and also to slap their tails when close to vessels, or leap out of the water when breaching. “Department of Environment and Science wildlife officers and marine park rangers will be out and about as the whales arrive in Queensland waters reminding recreational boaties
and commercial tour operators that while wildlife watchers celebrate, it’s also a time for boaties to exercise great care.” “We want to protect these beautiful marine mammals, but we also want to protect our boaties – humpbacks are unpredictable, up to 40-tonne mammals and you don’t want to get in their way.” Dr Meager said special regulations and restrictions applied when whales migrated in Queensland waters, with details at https://environment. des.qld.gov.au/wildlife/ animals/discovering-wildlife/ watching-marine-mammals/ rules Penalties apply for noncompliance. From now, be attentive and you may be lucky enough to spot the rare white whale this year!

Sous chef Travis Mares with Black Bear owner Dan Mulheron TRAVIS Mares has cooked meals for English royalty, worked with celebrity chefs, and run kitchens across Australia. He has returned to Hervey Bay to work as sous chef at Black Bear, the popular restaurant in Torquay owned by My Kitchen Rules winners Dan and Steph Mulheron. Ten years into his culinary career, Mr Mares has worked in every state and territory of Australia except Tasmania. “It’s that camaraderie that I missed from my childhood that I love. It makes you feel like you’re wanted.” The chef believes he wouldn’t have developed the taste for his chosen profession if not for the support he received from attending Carinity Education Glendyne special assistance school at Nikenbah as a young teenager. Coming from a broken family and a “quite disruptive” home life, Mr Mares found
solace and “a sense of purpose” in the school’s kitchen. “When you’re in a kitchen, and even when we were students at school, it feels like a small family working together as a team,” Mr Mares explained. “I had a lot of mentoring at school and I chose the right path. I learned really quickly that life’s a lot better when you’re working towards your goals. “Towards the end of school, they would ask you what you wanted to be, and I said, ‘I want to be a chef. I want to be a young Gordon Ramsay’.” Carinity Education Glendyne Principal Dale Hansen, one of Mr Mares’ mentors at school, said hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment gives students a head-start with their future career in hospitality. “Having a working commercial kitchen enables
students to experience working in the industry, giving them the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to pursue a career in hospitality,” Mr Hansen explained. “The students can gain first-hand skills using modern cooking equipment commonly used in workplaces such as cafés, hotels, resorts and fastfood outlets.” Mr Hansen said while most students “have the aptitude to cook” some are initially apprehensive about studying hospitality. “When they realise hospitality is one of the largest employment pathways in Australia, and a skill and trade that can take them to all corners of the globe, it becomes desirable,” he said. After graduating as the Dux of his school, Mr Mares completed his apprenticeship as a chef in Uluru where he prepared meals for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

What is wastewater? Wastewater is everything produced from your bathroom, laundry, kitchen and toilet. If you don’t get a bill from council for sewage then you are using an onsite wastewater system. Your wastewater system may be a septic tank with trenches, a treatment plant with sprinklers, a sand filter, a worm farm etc. Generally speaking there will be tank (sometimes more than one) to collect the wastewater, some form of treatment (this is where you may have aerators/pumps/floats/alarms) and then a method to dispose the treated effluent either below the surface (trenches/subsurface irrigation/garden beds) or above ground (sprinklers). Just like council has to maintain their municipal treatment plants, you, as the homeowner are responsible for maintaining your onsite treatment plant. This responsibility is set down in State and Local Laws and includes:
Regular Servicing
Keep in mind that this is a big-ticket item (worth around $10K or more). Just like a car – if you don’t service it and look after it then its not going to last the time it should. This is usually done quarterly or annually depending on the system type.
Repairs
Your service agent will tell you when things need to be fixed.
Maintain It
Don’t change it. Installing a wastewater system requires council approval –the system and disposal is designed – its marked on your plan and then its installed as per the plan. Much
like a house or a shed – you cannot simply decide later on to move it/reduce it/build over it/change it without prior approval. An impact sprinkler may spread the wastewater further but is not legal! Replacing your purple sullage hose (that you ran over with the mower) with green garden hose is also not allowed. A failing wastewater system can result in complaints from neighbours, action by council and may even affect the sale of your home. Homebuyers should consider a pre-purchase inspections on the wastewater system – this is not generally included in the usual building & pest. There are many stories of new home owners, moving in, only to find out that the system has completely failed and they find out that they can’t even flush the toilet or have a shower without effluent backing up. This can

We live, work and play here and appreciate the importance of maintaining high levels of business standards and practices. “We support the local community through local charities, sporting clubs and musical groups.” Priscilla and Brett said maintaining effective wastewater treatment was also important. “It is critical in protecting the health of your family, neighbourhood and water ways. “Poorly treated wastewater can lead to odour, ponding and faecal contamination of waterways and dams.” Call the friendly team to arrange a service on your wastewater system today.

Pialba centre competition winners announced
Competition Junior Winner Robbie Weger with Cr Wellings TERESA Saunders from Pialba and Robbie Weger, 9, from Torquay have been announced as winners of the Pialba Town Centre Master Plan Competition that aimed to get more people involved in the planning process. Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said that as part of Council’s Pialba Town Centre Master Plan project, $500 prepaid VISA cards were offered as prizes in two categories – Senior (over 18 years of age) and Junior (under 18 years of age). The Senior category winner was chosen at random from people who completed an online survey. Junior category entrants were judged by Cr Everard and Cr Wellings on illustrations that depicted how they would like to see the town centre look in the future. “We had a fantastic response with about 500 people entering the competition,” Cr Darren Everard said. “It was great to see so many
people get involved in this type of project, particularly the younger ones because it’s mainly about these guys.” Cr Jade Wellings said the project was about building a ‘Hervey Bay for the future’ and Robbie would be part of that future. “Robbie has identified that our Pialba town centre is currently old, slow and busy,” she said. “His winning drawing shows that he would like to make our town centre fun and more modern. “He has put in so many trees and more shops, as well as a bike track, so he has considered active travel. “Robbie has also put some car parking in, so he has also considered that maybe everyone may not want to take a bike or walk.” Robbie, a Kawungan State School student, said he entered the competition because he thought the Pialba Town Centre needed to be more
exciting and fun. When asked what he would buy with his $500 pre-paid VISA card, Robbie said: “I don’t know. I’ll figure that out later.” Possibilities, with his mother Selina Weger’s approval, include iPhone games and football boots for the new season starting soon. “And I’m going to share some money with Lucas (7). He is my brother and did a drawing as well.” Selina said her family was “super excited” about Robbie winning the Junior competition. Senior category winner Teresa Saunders thanked Council and the Australian Government for the opportunity to complete the online survey, which aims to provide guidance on what the future city heart might look like. Teresa also is yet to decide how she will spend her $500 pre-paid VISA card. Cr Everard said Council was partnering with the Australian Government through the Hinkler Regional Deal to breathe new life and opportunities into the Pialba Town Centre. “The new master plan will be a critical decision-making tool and plan for Hervey Bay’s future, which is why we are seeking input and insights from the community and key stakeholders.”

Secret Z Force unit gets national recognition DID you know that the world’s largest sand island, Fraser Island, was the secret training ground for special commando troops during World War II? The covert Z Force Unit was formed by the Australian Government in 1942 on Fraser Island for its seclusion and because the island's varied and challenging terrain lent itself to both jungle and amphibious training. The Z Unit was formed in response to the rapid Japanese invasion of the Pacific area, to organise agents and missions into enemy occupied areas in the South West Pacific. The most famous mission carried out by members of the Z Unit was a raid on Singapore Harbour in 1943 when fourteen men sailed from Western Australia in the Krait, a small, captured Japanese fishing vessel, to successfully destroy 40,000 tons of enemy shipping. The operation was codenamed Jaywick, and the Krait vessel returned to Australia without loss of life. This famous operation was given national recognition last week in the Australian National Maritime Museum. The museum acquired a collection of significant objects associated with Lieutenant Hubert Edward ‘Ted’ Carse and Operation Jaywick recently via auction in London. The Captain and navigator of the Krait, Lt. Ted Carse RANVR, was a graduate of the Royal Australian Naval College and at one time in charge of commando training on Fraser Island. The objects, a faux Japanese flag, medals and knife, are of great national significance to Australia and draw attention to the importance of the secret Z Forces. “These are objects which needed to remain in Australia and will now be added to the National Maritime Collection to form an important part of the Krait narrative.” “The objects are historically significant physical representations of the heroism

Do you feel your rights are being respected? Are your family members supportive, or do they create stress in your life? Are any of the following scenarios happening to you? • Being told that you can’t make any decisions for yourself because you have had a diagnosis of dementia. • Being pressured into entering a nursing home when you’re not ready. • Being frightened to voice your needs/concerns. • Carers or family members borrowing money and not paying you back. • Adult children moving in with you and refusing to pay rent. Lieutenant Hubert Edward ‘Ted’ Carse led the successful Jaywick operation onboard the captured Japanese fishing vessel of our forces in War World II. They will join other iconic objects from the Krait and Operation Jaywick in the Collection,” said museum Director and CEO Kevin Sumption. The purchase was possible due to the Australian Government’s support through the National Cultural Heritage Account and museum Foundation through the generosity of the families of Ted Carse's brothers. The Hon. Paul Fletcher MP, Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts said, “Artefacts of this nature provide a valuable opportunity to explore and enhance our understanding of the past.” “This is an opportunity not only to preserve but also to showcase objects of historical significance that reflect Australia’s experience in the Second World War.” “The MV Krait is on loan to the Maritime Museum from our colleagues at the Australian War Memorial and forms a proud part of our floating fleet,” said Mr Sumption. He said visitors to the museum could learn about the heroism of Z Force and Australian forces in World War II as part of the museum’s permanent Action Stations experience and Navy gallery. A total of 909 men camped at
the Fraser Commando School at North White Cliffs, on the western side of the island, and underwent specialist training for what turned out to be some of the most successful raids of the war. The men were taught how to survive in the jungle, unarmed combat techniques and methods of silent killing. They learned how to operate all weapons, including the silent Welrod pistol, a sub machine gun with silencer, and the killing knife. They became expert in using small party tactics, plastic explosives, timing devices and booby trap pressure switches. More than 260 operations behind enemy lines were undertaken. Some are still classified on the secret list. It wasn't until after the war that the bravery and daring of the men who trained on the island became publicly known. The Z Unit was given the cover name of Services Reconnaissance Department (SRD) a nondescript name for a very active group of agents. Some of the remnants of the special commando camp can still be seen at the North White Cliffs site on Fraser Island, just a short walk from Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village. It is believed some of the buildings were dismantled and sold to locals in Hervey Bay. Look out for a shed or two around town!

Australian Life photography competition 2019 finalist, Nic Walker - Betoota Races 2018 ONE of the country’s most prestigious photography competitions is inviting casual camera buffs and professional photographers from all over the country to take part in its 18th year. The Australian Life photography competition highlights life in Australia through the lens of photographers across the nation, from the epic to the intimate to the harsh and the fragile. The annual competition run by City of Sydney offers a $10,000 cash prize and the opportunity to feature in an outdoor gallery in Hyde Park, Sydney. A selection of 28 finalist images, and the stories behind
each photograph, will feature in the gallery that will launch on 16 September. For the first time, there will be a People’s Choice award – a $5,000 Olympus professional pack will be presented at the closing of the exhibition on 10 October. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the muchloved competition was an opportunity for photographers to share their most engaging images from the past year that portray Australian life beyond the icons. “Everyday occurrences, fleeting moments, unusual places, diverse cultures, celebrations and natural or artificial environments are the kinds of images we want to
see,” the Lord Mayor said. “What life is like in Australia and what it means is different for everyone and it’s always intriguing to see people’s unique perspectives captured in an image. A panel of judges, including National Geographic photographer, Michaela Skovranova and Magnum Photo Agency member, Trent Parke, will select the final 28 images. The 2021 winner will be announced at the opening of the Australian Life exhibition. Entries close at midnight on Friday 25 May. Read more at artandabout. com.au

TRIATHLON: The Hervey Bay Triathlon Club recently announced Kirra Seidel as the new club coach. The Sunshine Coast triathlete has recently moved to the region with her fiancé Jaryd Hamilton. While already training several local athletes, she jumped at the chance to take on the role with the Tri Club. “I have been close with most of the team members for a while now and wanted to take the opportunity to be more involved,” she said. She believes she brings a lot of experience to the role, having raced competitively for over ten years. “I feel that with my experience and having different
coaches, I believe I have a feel for what people want and what they need,” Seidel said. Seidel will work closely with Brian Harrington to familiarise herself with the athletes and the club. “I am looking forward to working alongside Harro and learning the ropes from him as well; he is one of the best coaches, hands down,” she said. She will sit in on his sessions, learning how and what he does. Harrington will continue to look after most of the elite juniors. “I just want to get the kids heading in the right direction and enjoying the sport,” she said. Seidel’s long-term goal is to
create a platform for people to engage in the sport. “The sport brings so much to the community, it is such a fun family event, and they can compete at every level,” she said. The Hervey Bay Triathlon club executive believes she will be able to help grow the club long-term. “It is part of our succession planning. It also creates opportunities for our senior members to work with Kirra to design training plans and set targets,” a club spokesman said. For further information about the Hervey Bay Triathlon Club, visit their Facebook page or website for details.
