Hervey Bay is now classified as DPA following an application to the Coalition Government’s “exceptional circumstances” review. Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said the successful application means medical practices in the Hervey Bay catchment – which includes Howard and Burrum Heads – have more opportunity to provide additional GPs. “Having enough doctors is fundamental to any community and that’s even more true when you live or work in a regional place like Hervey Bay,” Mr Pitt said. “For people of all ages, from babies to the elderly, being able to see a doctor when you have an illness or injury is important
to your health and wellbeing. “This change gives local GP practices a larger pool of doctors to recruit from, which should make it easier for clinics to secure more doctors for Hervey Bay. “The DPA classification identifies regions where people find it harder to see a doctor, based on the needs of the community. “Although the classification is updated each year, my office has been contacted about delays in getting in to see a GP and medical practices have faced difficulties in recruiting doctors to the area.” Mr Pitt said while the DPA classification does not guarantee a doctor, it allows medical practices in DPA catchments to recruit doctors subject to location restrictions, such as those who trained overseas. Students who have accepted a Commonwealth Supported Place in an Australian medical course in return for
a commitment to work in a regional, rural and remote area at the end of their studies must also work in a DPA. Federal Regional Health Minister, Dr David Gillespie said he set up the review process to ensure that an area’s DPA status was based on contemporaneous information, supported vulnerable patient cohorts and was responsive to significant workforce and population changes. The exceptional circumstances review applications were considered by an independent working group, which made recommendations to Minister Gillespie. As well as changes to the health workforce or services, the review considers demographics, and more up to date data which was not available at the time of the previous DPA update. The DPA indicator has been in place for three years, helping prioritise access to
doctors for underserviced rural areas. The Bundaberg region has had DPA status since 2019. It is one of many Australian Government initiatives to address the maldistribution of the medical workforce and encourage doctors under location restrictions to work in regional, rural and remote communities.

HERVEY Bay’s new pump track is planned to be at the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct with community consultation on the proposal coming soon. Cr Jade Wellings said the Council recognised that pump tracks were becoming popular recreation facilities across the country with a recent feasibility study highlighting there was demand for pump tracks in the region. “A pump track is a circuit of rollers, banked turns and jumps designed to be ridden by generating momentum by up and down body movements, instead of pedalling or pushing,” she said. The proposed tracks in Hervey Bay and Maryborough will include three distinct sections to cater for beginners, intermediate and experienced users. Cr Wellings said, “Council would like to see the Hervey Bay pump track built at
the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct in Nikenbah, subject to community consultation on a revised Sports Precinct Master Plan in early 2022. For Maryborough, there are two proposed options ANZAC Park and Brendan Hansen Park. “The tracks would be a great outlet for locals, as well as another feature we could use to attract visitors to the region. Competitions have started, and a number of councils host annual events. “Red Bull started the Pump Track World Championship in 2018. In 2019, the Championships were expanded as a series of 26 events across 22 countries including Australia while a Queensland events company wants to set up competitions. “Council is determined to support an active and healthy community through providing parks and open spaces that are

enjoyable for people of all ages and abilities. “We are excited to be developing these new facilities to bring locals and visiting families together.” Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said the Queensland Government was investing Council $1.3 million through the successful Works For Queensland Program to design and build the tracks over the next three years. “The region has received almost $65 million for community infrastructure projects through the jobcreating Works for Queensland program that is benefitting people in the Fraser Coast region,” Mr Tantari said. Free training and courses for veterans
TAFE Queensland Defence Solutions Project Manager Garry Hargreaves with TAFE Queensland Defence Force Project Officer Paul Copson FREE TAFE training and apprenticeships will be available for hundreds of Australian Defence Force veterans moving to civilian careers with the introduction of the new Defence to Civilian Success Training Program. TAFE Queensland Defence Solutions Project Manager Garry Hargreaves encouraged Hervey Bay veterans to take up the opportunity. “Not only is this program an important step in supporting local veterans to reintegrate into the civilian workforce, but it’s great news for the Hervey Bay community, who will benefit in gaining the broad range of valuable skills our veterans have to offer.” Mr Hargreaves said the key to the program’s success is that our Defence Force Project Officers have transitioned from defence into civilian careers themselves and are eager to help others in the same position. “Our TAFE Queensland Defence Force Project Officers have the ability to understand the unique skill sets obtained throughout a career in defence and how they transfer into civilian careers,” Mr
Hargreaves said. “They also have the ability to speak both the defence language and the language that our employers and industry speak. Not being able to translate this language has often been a barrier for many veterans as they embark on new careers post defence. “TAFE Queensland has previously seen some outstanding outcomes through a similar program called the Transition to Civi Street Program which launched in 2020 and has approximately 250 veterans successfully transitioned into new training and employment career paths. “Since the launch of the Premiers new Defence to Civilian Success Training Program late last year over 30 veterans throughout the state are already on their way to new civilian careers having been placed into training pathways through TAFE Queensland,” he said. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has committed $1.1 million in funding to support up to 300 Queensland veterans into different careers through the new program. “Our servicemen and
women have given so much to Australia, and this funding will help open more doors in the next chapter of their lives when they decide to transition from the ADF,” the Premier said. “Veterans bring a wealth of skills and experience, and my Government - with the support of TAFE Queensland - will help them capitalise on their abilities when they leave the military.” The funding will also be used to promote the training program to veteran and for a new mentorship program to support veterans with employment in the Queensland public service. Minister for Training and Skills Development Di Farmer said it would provide a good training ground for veterans. “Training and apprenticeships through TAFE Queensland provide a wonderful foundation for people of different ages and skillsets to move forward with their lives in rewarding careers.” TAFE Queensland Defence team can be contacted by emailing defence@tafeqld. edu.au or by phone on 07 32440155.

Local goods still deliver LOCAL grocers not affected by COVID supply shortages In times of uncertainty, it is great to know you can still rely on locals to supply the goods. While the nation is struggling to keep supermarket shelves stocked due to COVID affected staffing shortages and supply issues, thankfully, our local Hervey Bay butchers and fresh produce shops are not affected and are operating as usual. Scotty Reid, owner of Scotty’s Mad About Meats in Pialba said he’s pleased more people are turning to the local supplier, “We haven’t been affected by COVID supply issues as we try to source most of our meat locally.” “We get a lot of our meat from Gympie or Biggenden, and we haven’t had any trouble with deliveries and staff shortages.” “We’ve gotten more customers recently that used to buy meat from the big supermarkets. I think people realise that the quality of meat from the butcher is better and the service is a big thing too.” “It’s always good to support local greengrocers, bakers and butchers as you’re helping a whole chain across the board of local workers and families.” Joep Dekker, owner of Fraser Coast Fresh Produce said he had noticed a significant change in customer thinking as more people are aware of the benefits of buying from local suppliers. “I think people are looking

as NSW and Victoria potato farmers. Regarding delivery issues facing the large supermarkets, Joep said that was not an issue for them as they have a truck to go and get the produce themselves. “Some of the nationals have big distribution centres that rely on a lot of trucks and people; they have had a lot of people that were sick, knocking the whole supply chain out.” “People have been panic buying also, which has created another issue with stocking shelves. For us, we can just order more and pick it up ourselves.” He urged people not to panic buy as there is plenty to go around if you buy from local suppliers. Gary Richards, owner of Whale City Butchery confirmed the benefits of supporting local
greengrocers and butchers, “We care about our customers and are happy to talk to people about their needs and cooking tips; it’s part of our service.” He said they had not had any issue with supply, “We’ve got back up because we’re a warehouse; we have a large freezer and cold room, the only one in Hervey Bay.” “We care about our longstanding customers; we supply to the two hospitals and nearly all the aged care facilities in Hervey Bay, so I make sure I don’t run out.” He said they had seen a rise in customers since shortages in the supermarkets. They also offer carpark pickups as the front door is only a few feet away. “People would be better off if they went to their local butcher and fruit and veg supplier, both financially and quality-wise.”
In 2021 more than 100 complaints were made to the state’s independent corruption watchdog, the Crime and Corruption Commission, about corruption in procurement and the spending of public funds. In the last 5 years, public officials have been dismissed and even jailed for corruption, local Councils have been disbanded, and new laws have been introduced, creating heavy penalties for corrupt practices and misuse of public resources. Government Tenders and Projects are subject to the principles of probity. Any awarding of a tender is subject to scrutiny of the public, interested parties and government agencies with a view of ensuring they have evidence that they meet probity requirements. Probity is one of the most important concepts in government administration. It translates to mean “the quality of having strong moral principles; honesty and decency” and colloquially means the decisions of any government agency must pass the “pub test”. Before a government body is allowed to spend funds on products and services, it has to go through a transparent and competitive process that would ensure it meets probity

requirements. That competitive process has to be fair, honest and decent. It could be obtaining three quotes from different suppliers, or it could be an open tender published to the community to bid for. Whichever the process, if that process cannot pass probity reviews, then the decision is open to appeal by interested parties. There are often layers of the process so that a decision to purchase does not lie with just one person. In most circumstances, multiple people, committees, and authorised delegates are involved to ensure the power does not rest with one individual. If there are allegations of misconduct regarding the spending of public monies, a complaint can be made to the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) in Queensland. The CCC’s duty is to investigate allegations of corruption. Probity is a means of managing corruption risk, as an independent probity auditor will come in and review the process and make sure the adequate controls are in place, and the proper considerations have been given to decision making. THE HERVEY Bay Netball Association has benefited from a $4,500 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant, to assist in fostering the future Netball champions of our region. With the specific purpose of providing scholarships to talented young players, the program will ease the cost burden on lower income families. Hervey Bay Netball Records Officer Joanne Cook said it was important for the club to be able to offer an inclusive program that gives every young player the chance to represent Hervey Bay. “Sometimes that can be difficult from a financial perspective for some families,” she said. “This grant is allowing us to support kids in every representative age bracket that we have. “Fees to participate in the representative program can be as much as three times more than the regular season and include travel and
accommodation. “We wanted to make sure that we had the ability for talented young netballers to put their best foot forward, without the concern of the cost. “We cannot thank the Hervey Bay RSL enough for their support.” Spanning Under 11’s to Under 17’s, training for the older rep cohort has already begun for 2022 with junior trials scheduled for March. The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program is part of the RSL’s ongoing commitment to the local community. The program is designed to provide financial, in-kind and fundraising opportunities to local not-for-profit organisations struggling to gain support.
A GROUP of local musicians have joined forces and drawn attention from the community for their live performance in what appeared to be a bus shelter. Naming themselves the Bus Stop Boys, the newly formed foursome decided to have a jam session overlooking the Arkarra Lagoons in Dundowran in a shelter very reminiscent of a bus shelter. Group organiser Ken Sutton said they chose that location as it was convenient and pleasant to be outside. “We played about 20 songs; it was a lot of fun, and we want to keep doing it.” It was their first jam session in what they hope will be the start of a successful band
formation. The band comprises Ken on guitar (and banjo); Cecil Porter plays the ukulele (and drums); Shane Cornish, also a member of Hardings House band, plays the drums; and Rolf Schlomm plays the banjo and sings. Cool Country Social Music Club brought Rolf, Ken and Cecil together. Rolf is semi-wheelchair bound and relies on his NDIS carer and band drummer Shane to drive him around. Their next jam session will be from Rolf’s garden gazebo before hitting the stage at the Torquay Markets. Ken described the band’s style as Hill Billy. “I am also a singersongwriter; I’ve had a CD out
and been on the radio, so in the future we may play our original songs, but we will start with covers.” They plan to each get a busking licence to allow them to open their guitar case to accept tips and play in public places. When asked if a bus stop tour of Hervey Bay was on the cards for the band, Ken said it depended on if there would be Council permissions required. Why not have entertainment for the public at bus stops? Maybe swings would be good too! Look out for this new band, possibly popping up in other mini music venues around town.

The new Rapid Sand Bagger, used during the recent flooding event can fill one sand bag every three seconds THE QUEENSLAND Rapid Relief Team (RRT) swung into action as the recent floods approached the centre of Maryborough. RRT’s brand new ‘Rapid Sand Bagger’ was deployed for the first time, churning out more than 6,000 sandbags to help local businesses and residents protect their homes and shop fronts from the rising flood waters. RRT Director, Lester Sharples, said he was pleased RRT could support the community. “I’d firstly like to thank the SES, RFS, Fraser Coast Regional Council and local community volunteers for the amazing work they have done…,” Mr Sharples said.
“It’s times like these when you see what communities are made of – and Maryborough showed such a strong spirit of support and mateship. “I’d also like to thank our RRT volunteers for coming out and supporting the emergency services, local businesses and residents as they fought these floods. “A whopping 100 tonnes of sand was used, and our team also dished up more than 1,000 hot meals to the emergency workers and locals displaced by the floodwater.” The new Rapid Sand Bagger can spit out one sandbag every three seconds and can be deployed across the east coast of Australia, supporting local emergencies services when
disaster strikes. “We are happy that we could provide some assistance in a small way for the community and the region is in our prayers as they now commence the difficult task of clean up and recovery.” The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church established RRT in 2013 to express its principles of care and compassion. It is staffed by Church volunteers who provide catering services at a range of charitable events and emergencies. Globally, the RRT has more than 14,500 volunteers and operates in Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, the United States, Canada and Germany.

Service excellence recognised and rewarded AN EYE for business efficiency and customer satisfaction has been recognised in Sjuul Gorissen as she was awarded the 2021 Verena Fletcher Award for Service Excellence. The Client Relationship Manager of Vivere Homes received the prestigious award thanks to her efforts in improving in-house systems within the building company. The Advertiser spoke to Ms Gorissen to see what her plans were for the future and how the award would impact her life in the service industry. She said the $3000 bursary prize would be beneficial for her to continue her studies. Ms Gorissen is currently completing a double diploma in Marketing and Communications. “I’m not 100% sure how I will spend the money just yet. I’ll probably use it to help finish my current studies.” When she completes her studies, she said she will reassess her future and may study Interior Design or something similar. Since joining the family business two years ago, Ms Gorissen has improved the company’s in-house systems, boosting efficiency and client satisfaction. “When I started here, they had just started becoming super busy, and the business grew quite quickly.” “They didn't have a lot of
processes in place , and they didn't have anyone really taking care of their clients as well as they would have liked, so I took on that role.” Ms Gorissen is the first point of contact for clients at Vivere Homes during their building journey. She maintains schedules, processes and sub-trade staff to ensure the smooth running of the daily business. For these reasons, she was nominated and recognised for her effort. Ms Gorissen said she loved the service industry and working with people, “I enjoy helping people achieve what they want.” “There's also something rewarding about doing someone’s dream house, especially the day when you hand it over.” From a total of 25 nominees,
Ms Gorissen was selected along with finalists Harmony Wilson from Trauma Assist Wide Bay and Ann Glasson from Riviera Resort for their hard work and attitude towards customer service. The Verena Fletcher Awards are a great opportunity for businesses to recognise the efforts and value of striving for customer service excellence. The annual award is open to everyone on the Fraser Coast. It celebrates the memory of former Hervey Bay Chamber of Commerce executive Verena Fletcher, who died of a severe asthma attack in 2015. Along with her husband Gavin, Verena Fletcher took great pride in delivering service excellence through their Coffee Club franchises in Hervey Bay, acting as role models by supporting their staff while juggling busy family life.

Sarah Neisler of Hervey Bay and Chloe Cassidy of Maryborough were among USC Fraser Coast’s latest cohort of students to graduate recently. “Studying Social Work felt like a calling,” said 24-year-old Sarah, who began her new role as a social worker at the Bundaberg Base Hospital after completing the Bachelor of Social Work. “I chose to study Social Work as I wanted to make a positive change to those in my community who were struggling,” the former Urangan State High School student said. “Additionally, I grew up watching my parents, who are both educators, make a difference by helping people learn and grow. “Through my role as a hospital social worker, I am able to assist those
whose social and emotional experiences are affecting their health and wellbeing, advocate for patients and their families without a voice, and promote access to services and support.” Sarah chose to study at the Fraser Coast so she could live at home with the support of family and friends. She said the experience felt like one of kind, “I met some of the best people in my life...” “During my time at university, I was taught the importance of researching, actively learning new things, asking questions and, most importantly, working as a team. “I learned the importance of social work theories and how they can be implemented into real-life situations with a different lens to my own.” For Chloe, 25, studying Social Work on the Fraser Coast gave her the opportunity
to remain close to family and friends while studying her chosen degree and continuing her full-time role as an administration officer at Fraser Coast hospitals. Chloe said after seven years working in hospital administration, she was inspired to make a career change and enrolled in a Bachelor of Social Work in 2017. It is now a case of working in the same hospitals, but in a new challenging and rewarding role as a social worker, after gaining the position soon after completing her final placement. “The highlight for me was the opportunity to make a number of life-long friends and enjoy the laid-back and supportive atmosphere of the Fraser Coast campus, and I enjoyed the flexibility to complete some online subjects”.

Community minded youth rescue echidna THE RECENT flooding in our region was devastating for many people, property and animals. Still, it was also a time to shine as a community brought together to help each other in times of need. One such story involved two 12-year-old boys, a plastic paddling pool and the desire to help clean up the environment. Ryan O’Keefe and Rhyley Brunckhorst's efforts were in the spotlight recently as their heroic efforts to rescue a stranded echidna drew
attention on social media. The 12-year-old friends were cleaning up the beach at Urangan after the floods had flushed a lot of debris onto the Hervey Bay beaches when they spotted the helpless echidna. The echidna, affectionately named Russell by its rescuers, was stranded on a sandbank several hundred metres from the shoreline. Onlookers Kerry Spencer and her husband Nathan noticed the boys in the distance. Nathan waded out to help the
boys safely carry the echidna in a plastic shell-shaped paddling pool with their t-shirts. “Not the usual thing to be rescuing off the middle sandbank at Urangan - a very wet, sandy and tired echidna! Poor little fella must have been washed out in the floodwater. He was still alive and seemed ok though!” said Kerry. She said the animals' skin was very wrinkly, a sign of being in the water a long time. Wildlife carers were called to bring the animal safely

Grants of up to $50,000 are now available for primary producers, small businesses and non-profit organisations affected by the flooding associated with ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth from 7 – 10 January in the Wide Bay-Burnett region to help communities get back on their feet. The grants are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland governments under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) and will be available to eligible applicants in the Bundaberg, Fraser Coast, Gympie, North Burnett and South Burnett local government areas. Minister for Emergency Management and National Recovery and Resilience Senator the Hon Bridget McKenzie said the activation of extraordinary grant assistance under the DRFA was imperative to allow primary producers, small business owners and nonprofit organisations to help overcome the damage. “We have reports that hundreds of primary producers had their crops wiped out, infrastructure damaged or destroyed and lost livestock as a result of ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth,” Minister McKenzie said. “Agriculture is a major
industry in the Wide BayBurnett region. The flood has impacted the horticulture, cotton, sugar cane, grain, livestock and dairy sectors, so these extraordinary assistance grants of $50,000 will be a welcome boost to help primary producers get back on their feet. Acting Premier and Minister responsible for the Queensland Reconstruction Authority Steven Miles said small businesses and nonprofit organisations who have felt the wrath of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth can also access grants of up to $50,000 to assist with their recovery. “Primary producers and small businesses are the lifeblood of regional communities so it is imperative we support them in crisis and give them the help they need as they work to restock, replant, repair and recover,” Mr Miles said. “It’s estimated the impact of the floods is into the millions of dollars for small businesses. More than 70 businesses have been directly impacted by the floods in the Wide Bay and Burnett region. Their next production (after ROUGH:From Zero to Go), Long Gone Lonesome Cowgirls, directed by veteran director Marjolijn Dudgeon, will be a feast of sassy wit and poignant heart-felt truths laced with country and western songs delivered with verve and gusto accompanied by a live onstage band. Set in a little far Western Queensland town in the late 1960s the feel-good play follows the fortunes of two young women as they navigate the complicated twists and turns of marriage and life in those times. Vicki is a committed, church-going Catholic and a young, happily married mother of a toddler. Rae is a young barmaid who, after seven weeks of a whirlwind marriage to a rodeo rider, finds herself abandoned in a strange town. As their unlikely friendship grows, both have to face the reality of their lives and at significant moments in the play each finds separately and together solace and expression through the songs of some of the greats of that time: Patsy Cline, Loretta Lyn, Tammy Wynette, Hank
Williams and Gene Pitney. Vocal director Gunilla Myren is well known in the music scene of the Fraser Coast as a music teacher and runs her own successful music studio. She has also been the vocal director for most of the Macabre Theatre musicals and is generous in lending her expertise to so many other musical endeavours. Gunilla is forming the small band that will play on stage and intends to play the keyboard in the band so we are guaranteed a wonderful musical experience. Marjolijn has recently directed Death in a Minute, Shakespeare in Love…and Out, and Tea at Five as well as having some classics such as Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Crucible and Cosi, amongst others. Food n Groove cancelled The final Fraser Coast Food ‘n Groove event for
the summer season, planned for Friday, February 4 at Seafront Oval, has been cancelled due to community safety concerns as Covid-19 case numbers steadily increase. Fraser Coast Tourism & Events has been monitoring the current Covid-19 surge in Queensland thoroughly and note that since cancelling the January Food ‘n Groove event, cases in the Fraser Coast have risen from 272 cases on January 5 to 1,016 cases on January 15 (statistics provided by the Queensland Government can be found here). Queensland Health modelling suggests cases will continue to rise for the next few weeks, peaking in late January or early February. Keeping the Fraser Coast community safe is the number one priority for the region and FCTE has decided it would be irresponsible to go ahead with this event during the current climate. The February 4 event was the last planned Food ‘n Groove Friday for the 20212022 summer season with future dates for events to be held later in the year not decided at this stage.
