Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour testing out a mobility scooter GET your motors running … the 2021 Mobility Scooter/ Wheelchair Convoy will be held on Saturday, 4 September. Participants can register from 8am on the day at Scarness Park on the Esplanade. The convoy will travel down the shared cycle/walk path along the Esplanade to the All Abilities Playground and then turn back to Scarness Park for a celebration. “The aim of the day is to promote the safe use of mobility scooters and wheelchairs,” Fraser Coast Regional Council Seniors Liaison Officer Julie de Waard said.

“These vehicles are very important; they enhance people’s independence and mobility.” The convoy also promotes awareness of scooters and wheelchairs using footpaths across the region. Participants will attempt to improve on the Australian Record for the longest mobility scooter/mobility vehicle convoy, which was set a couple of years ago. “The Australian record stands at 80 scooters and wheelchairs in a convoy,” Ms de Waard said. “The convoy, even though it has a serious message, is also

a bright and happy event with participants encouraged to decorate their vehicles.” There are prizes for the best decorated vehicle; the largest group (participants from the same facility such as a retirement village or nursing home) and best decorated hat.” Participants can either register on the day, or to make the process faster, pre-register by contacting the Halcro Street Community Centre on 4194 2441. At Scarness Park there will be entertainment and food available after the convoy.

COVID-19 puts brakes on students’ racing fun again STUDENTS from Carinity Education Glendyne have vowed to “keep on pedalling” despite the Fraser Coast Technology Challenge human powered vehicle race being cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. A team from the small special assistance school in Hervey Bay was set to compete in the 24-hour endurance race in Maryborough on September 1012. Unfortunately, it is the third straight year Carinity Education Glendyne students will be unable to race. In 2018, the first team from Carinity Education Glendyne participated in a human powered vehicle race, piloting an old, borrowed vehicle. However, over the next two years the team’s racing ambitions have stalled, firstly due to having no vehicle in 2019 and then because of COVID-19 in 2020. After their eight-hour race in Benaraby earlier this month

was cancelled due to a COVID lockdown, the school’s team – dubbed ‘Team Velocity’ – was back on track and training for the Maryborough race. “Students in our human powered vehicle program are understandably very disappointed that COVID has put the brakes on yet another race, especially after all of last year’s scheduled races were cancelled due to the pandemic,” Team Velocity manager Tracey MacDonald said. “Our team environment has created a unique bond across several age groups of students, some of whom have faced barriers to education. Their leadership skills, team goal setting, teamwork and selfregulation has developed over the year.” Team Velocity has been buoyed by the support of Fraser Coast businesses Sign Doctor and Wilcox Bikes and the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City.

“The project helps students to feel confident, learn about themselves, be dedicated to a task, and experience a sense of achievement. Their parents get to see what their children are capable of when given the opportunity,” Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City President Elizabeth Beer said. Although Queensland students north of Gympie were not affected by the SEQ lockdown, schools have taken a cautious approach, with Maryborough State High School not confident about staging a Covid Safe 24hour race and overnight camping on the school’s grounds. Event organiser, Fraser Coast Tourism & Events, examined alternative venues at the Maryborough Showground, Aldershot and at Urangan but none were suitable at short notice even for an eight-hour event and the decision was taken to cancel the event.

“It’s tough on those teams which have been training for months for the premier human powered vehicle event in Queensland, but in the end we just ran out of options and a decision was made in support of student health,” said FCTE general manager, Martin Simons. In a normal year the race attracts up to 150 teams from through Queensland and interstate, bringing more than 2000 people to Maryborough, boosting the local economy. The Tech Challenge is part of the Queensland seven-event Pedal Prix Super Series held at racetracks throughout the state, with Maryborough the only street event. “We want to thank everyone for their hard work over the past few months in trying to make this event happen and ask that we now all look forward to staging another great event in 2022,” said Mr Simons.

Buy Local proving popular RESIDENTS and businesses are being encouraged to keep supporting Council’s Buy Local campaign with new statistics showing more than $61,000 worth of local gift cards have been bought in the past seven months. Mayor George Seymour said the Fraser Coast Gift Cards – the cornerstone of Council’s Open for Business Buy Local campaign - were now accepted at 180 businesses across the region. “Buying local is the best way for people to support Fraser Coast businesses, it’s great for local jobs and great for our local communities,” he said. “Every $100 spent locally provides at least a $180 benefit to the local economy through the multiplier effect so that’s why we’re urging everyone to get behind this campaign and support local businesses. “Of the $61,000 in cards bought, $34,000 has been redeemed so there is still $27,000 in the community ready to be spent.” The program, which has been running since December 2020, encourages residents and visitors to shop locally to help build a stronger united Fraser Coast business community. “When we delved into the statistics, we found that more than $18,000 has been spent in participating Maryborough businesses, with $14,500 being spent in Hervey Bay businesses and just over $1,000 spent in participating Tiaro businesses,” Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said.

Scholarship sees nursing dream become a reality UP TO 100 Queenslanders will be given the support to create a better future for themselves through education and training, with applications for TAFE Queensland’s scholarships now open. Recipients awarded scholarships will receive up to $5,000 to study any TAFE Queensland qualification from any study area in 2022, from a certificate III through to an advanced diploma or bachelor degree. There are two types of scholarships available – merit scholarships, which are aimed at supporting people who have demonstrated strong levels of achievement to advance their careers, and access and equity scholarships, which are designed to help students battling social or financial hardship. Hervey Bay resident Sherrie Schembri, 38, is among the list of Queenslanders who have been able to pursue their career goals in 2021, after receiving an access and equity scholarship last year. The mother and devoted wife is now on track to fulfil her lifelong dream of becoming a nurse, with Mrs Schembri due to graduate from TAFE Queensland’s Hervey Bay campus with a Diploma of Nursing at the end of this year. Dave Lack from Dave’s Dried Meats will use his grant to upgarde his business website SMALL businesses in Fraser Coast have two weeks to go until they can submit their applications for a $5000 regional only round of the popular Business Basics grants program. The guidelines to prepare the application became available online on 25 August before the grants open for applications at 9am on Wednesday 8 September. “The Business Basics grants, aimed at sole traders and small businesses with a turnover of up to $300,000, are designed to help businesses in Fraser Coast increase their core capabilities and ability to adopt current best practice,” said Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer. “They can be used for activities such as training and coaching, website development and upgrades, and strategic marketing.” Dave’s Dried Meats based in Hervey Bay was one of the businesses to receive money in the first round of Business

Basics that opened earlier this year. Owner David Lack got the taste for biltong after he grew up across the street from some South Africans and got into making his own as a hobby that has now turned into his new business. “I’ve been selling my product at some Nikenbah Markets with good reviews and bought a website domain with the aim of selling online as well,” Mr Lack said. “I tried to build my own website, but it was a bit too clunky. So this $5,000 Business Basics grant will be a great help to get that up and running.” Member for Maryborough, Bruce Saunders encouraged local businesses to get ready to apply. “We know that the first round of grants went really quickly, so it’s important to get your application ready to go,” Mr. Saunders said. Mr Farmer said, “While it was fantastic that there were so many people ready to go with

strong applications, the last round was oversubscribed so it’s running again exclusively in regional Queensland.” The grants are a part of the government’s Big Plans for Small Business Strategy and the $14.2 billion COVID-19 Economic Recovery Plan. The Seagulls have had ongoing support from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program over a number of years, with the funds helping to keep sports affordable for local families. “For us, we focus on making participation more attainable for our players,” the Seagulls committee said. “Rather than one particular project, the very kind support of the Hervey Bay RSL allows us to subsidise the cost of playing, for over 400 players across over 20 teams. “Shorts, socks, registration are all made more affordable by the community grant. “Insurance is a huge cost now and we have a defined focus on access to the sport at an affordable level.” The committee all agreed the uniqueness of the support given to Seagulls by the Community Grants Program was the provision of both a cash and voucher component. “This has allowed us to use vouchers to

the RSL Club for a myriad of additional fundraising activities, assisting the club to raise more valuable funds. “Local sport is the backbone of the community and provides our kids with not only a health and fitness outlet, but a pathway into more expansive levels of competition beyond our region.” A great example of members achieving great things is the story of J’maine Hopgood, a local Hervey Bay Seagulls junior who progressed through the junior grades with the Penrith Panthers, while completing a carpentry apprenticeship. He was selected for the QLD U20s Origin side in 2019 and swapped the building site for the NRL bubble when he signed an NRL development contract. He made his NRL debut for the Panthers’ this year. The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program is part of the RSL’s ongoing commitment to the local community. The program is designed to provide financial, in-kind and fundraising opportunities to local not for profit organisations struggling to gain support.

A FIRST for Hervey Bay, disabled people now have a dedicated activity hub to call their own. Lotus Studio, part of the Australian Lifestyle Solutions Support (ALSS) NDIS service providers, opened its Urangan doors to the public a couple of weeks ago with an overwhelmingly positive welcome. Service Coordinator, Meagan Larson said she was inspired to set up the space as she saw a need for a safe, creative and social space for people with disabilities to come together. “I had been a support worker in the past and often thought there just really isn't a lot that we can do as support workers with our clients.” “It has been a dream of mine to have a space that was safe and friendly for like-minded

people to come.” Ms Larson is very pleased to see her vision finally come to life. “This is a welcoming space for support workers and their clients to come and learn new skills while building friendships and finding joy.” Ms Larson said she wanted to normalize the lives of people living with disabilities as much as she could by offering a range of creative activities including painting workshops, candle making, soap making, rock painting, scrapbooking and wheelchair yoga and dancing to name a few. The studio has created a diverse program of activities but they are open to evolving and tailoring the space to suit the needs of the participants. The studio welcomes

Butchulla voices unearthed AN INDIGENOUS USC PhD student is taking on the complex task of bringing to light the history of Queensland’s First Nations people that has been hidden in state archives in a bid to amplify their voices in historical narratives. Butchulla woman Rose Barrowcliffe was recently appointed by the State Government as the inaugural First Nations Archive Advisor at the Queensland State Archives. “I'm excited that my home state recognises the important role that archives have to play in truth-telling,” Ms Barrowcliffe said. “Queensland has many diverse First Nations people, so it will be a challenge to the current archival practice to honour their many histories and priorities. “There are many records in our state and national archives that have documented the lives of Indigenous peoples, but there has long been a focus on sectioning off archives into ‘Indigenous’ and ‘nonIndigenous history’. “We need to look at archives with fresh eyes to find stories that are recorded but haven't been part of history.” USC Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Helen Bartlett congratulated Ms Barrowcliffe on her historic appointment, which is an extension of her doctoral research at USC which aims to highlight the stories of the Butchulla people, the

The group were inspired to assist the Suitcase of Hope organisation after listening to Hervey Bay’s coordinator Kathryn Rodda give a talk to the bowlers on the plight facing many of these young children in the region. “It touched our hearts and then we went into action and asked our fabulous community and bowlers for donations,” said bowler Marrilyn Kerr. “We took up collections, received cash donations and held an auction at Urangan Bowls Club which raised $2000.”

Urangan Arrows raised a total of $6000 for Hervey Bay’s ‘Suitcase of Hope’ over a twoweek span recently. Started last year in Hervey Bay, the mission of ‘Hope in a Suitcase’ is to provide children entering foster care and/or outof-home care, something to call their own, aiming to send them a message that they are important and cared for by the community. The bowling group will use the money to purchase new suitcases full of new personal belongings for the many children that enter foster care each month, often with only a plastic shopping bag of bare necessities for their new life. “We hope our donations of beautiful, packed suitcases of new clothes, books, toiletries,

a small game and a soft toy will be the first step in helping the children feel loved, worthy, and remind them that they do matter. “We want to empower them for the journey ahead and equip them for their future,” said Ms Kerr. “All goods purchased for the children will come from local businesses.” Ms Kerr said the Urangan Arrows president, Syd Fox and herself started the ball rolling and the club members showed such generosity particularly as most of them are pensioners or self-funded retirees. Golf ball as a message from beyond the grave CALL IT serendipitous, but to one daughter on the Fraser Coast, the discovery of her lost father’s special golf ball from 12 years ago could be considered a message from the spirit world. The mysterious golf ball of keen golfer Lance Mills was discovered during building of the new Ingengia Lifestyle community in Urangan, the former Eagles Nest Golf Course. Ms Mills said the golf course was her father’s happy place where he spent a lot of time with his mates and family. This ball was his proud, lucky ball from achieving a hole in one in 2012. “He wouldn’t stop talking about this hole in one; he was a tall tale teller, and he loved talking about this ball.” Ms Mills said when the ball went missing, she suspected her larrikin of a father hid it under the hole or tee afterwards so he could always claim to beat his opponents to getting in the hole first. Ms Mills said she was so pleased to live in a place with such a great community spirit where people want to connect. When does a joke become a “Dad joke”? When it becomes a(p)parent

In the lead up to Father’s Day, we have been having some fun at the Firm telling our best ‘Dad’ jokes. But what is a Dad according to the Law? There have been a few key judgments on this issue, as a Dad is not always necessarily the biological father of a child and vice versa. According to the Law, there are several mechanisms that make you a parent at law, and DNA is only one part of that. Generally, this is only an issue determining the Father, although not always. Setting aside the issues that can arise in adoption, surrogacy and artificial contraception, at Law you can be considered a father if you are a man, and any of the following apply: 1. The mother gave birth to a child and you were married to her (or de facto) at the time. 2. You are named as a father on the birth certificate of the child. 3. If you were separated from the child’s mother but had lived with her at any time

in the 44 weeks prior to the child being born and ending 20 weeks before the child was born. 4. If you were married to the Child’s mother, separated, and then resumed the relationship for three months or less, and the child was born within 44 weeks of the end of the last period, but after you were divorced. If you dispute parentage, you can get a DNA test to confirm whether you are the Father. This needs to be a Legal paternity test. But DNA is not the only factor the Courts consider in determining who is a Father. They can also consider intention and conduct. It can be complicated and unique to every situation. Unfortunately, “Teller of the best Dad Jokes” does not make the list of criteria, even if we think it should. The organization operates two legal programs – the Wide Bay Burnett Community Legal Service (WBBCLS) and Seniors Legal and Support Service (SLASS). Both programs have moved from their former Torquay Rd home to the community centre at 22 Charles St, Pialba. It is a time of change for the service, with the move coinciding with a name change. The service was previously known as Taylor Street Community Legal Service,

with the name changing to better reflect its service delivery to the whole Wide Bay-Burnett region. WBBCLS is an independent and non-profit community organisation which provides quality legal advice to the disadvantaged across Wide Bay region. The services does so by offering free and confidential legal advice, referral and education. Meanwhile, SLASS offers free legal and support services for older residents of the Wide Bay-Burnett region concerned about elder abuse, mistreatment or financial exploitation. HBNC Operations Manager,

Mix table tennis and badminton and you get the new....pickleball IT MAY have a silly name, but this new sport has developed a serious following around the country and in Hervey Bay. Pickleball is a low impact paddleball sport that combines badminton, table tennis, and tennis elements. Games are played with two or four players using solid paddles to hit a lightweight ball over a net. The sport shares features of other racket sports; the dimensions and layout of a badminton court, with a net and rules similar to tennis. The sport has had a gradual introduction into Australia since 2015. Invented in the US in the mid-1960s as a backyard children’s game, pickleball has spread worldwide and arrived in Hervey Bay last year. Hervey Bay pickleball player and state gold medalist Sue Brooks said she loved that it’s more of a strategy game than a power game. She said there were so many benefits for people of all ages and abilities. “There’s less running than tennis because you’re on a smaller badminton size court and it’s a very social game.” “We have people in their 70s playing as it’s kinder to the body than a lot of other sports.” “We started playing in Hervey Bay over a year ago then COVID hit and we had to stop

Hervey Bay pickleball champions for a while.” The players were excited to start playing again at the end of the year and went from strength to strength in a short amount of time. Several Hervey Bay pairs competed in the July Queensland Pickleball Championships in Brisbane, scooping several medals. Pickleball and PCYC manager Brendan Lee said he would love to see the game grow in Hervey Bay and Australia. “It’s in a growth phase in Australia with Queensland leading the way with around 1100 registered players so we are at the pinnacle of pickleball in Australia, and most of the top-level players come from Queensland.” As one of the younger players

Store manager Gabrielle Kidd said, “I am so excited to be part of the Neighbours Aid Organization and the opening of their new Pialba store; becoming part of the local community affecting change to one life at a time.” Neighbours Aid was founded on the Sunshine Coast in 2002 and has now arrived in Pialba. Eighteen years and seven stores around southeast Queensland later, the organisation’s op shops have raised over three quarters of a million dollars for six projects throughout the 3rd world last year. RESIDENTS are invited to have their say on a Council policy recognising residents who celebrate their 100th birthday by planting a ‘centenary tree’. Mayor George Seymour said the recognition practice was initiated by the former Maryborough City Council, which introduced the planting of a tree in a public park to celebrate the milestone, and had since been expanded to include all areas of the Fraser Coast region. “Planting a tree to commemorate the 100th birthday of a Fraser Coast resident is becoming very popular, with more than 10 trees planted in the Hervey Bay Botanic Gardens and the Elizabeth Park Rose Gardens in Maryborough this year alone,” he said. Cr Seymour speculated that the significant increase in the number of people turning 100 in the past couple of years suggests that there was a baby boom as men returned from World War I. “With the increasing popularity of planting centenary trees, Council is looking to adopt a formal policy and is inviting the community to have their say on the protocols and application process,” he said. The dedicated Headspace program assisting locals in Hervey Bay experiencing mental illness into work will be extended to help more young people secure employment opportunities. Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said the Hervey Bay Headspace site would continue to run the successful Individual Placement and Support Program to address barriers preventing people with mental illness from finding and keeping a job. “The Coalition Government will re-invest in this program to boost local mental health and employment services in Hervey Bay,” Mr Pitt said. “By integrating educational and workforce support with clinical mental health services, we are helping our young people secure employment opportunities. “Mental illness should not be a barrier to pursuing a fulfilling career and the Individual Placement and Support Program will continue to ensure young people have access to the tailored support they need to thrive in any workplace.” The Coalition Government will invest $1,054,560 in the Hervey Bay Headspace to continue delivering the local initiative until 2024. The Hervey Bay Headspace is one of 24 existing locations

being extended, in addition to 26 new sites across Australia delivering the program. Minister for Families and Social Services Anne Ruston said the onset of mental illness in young people can significantly affect their ability to transition from study to work. “This investment will provide ongoing local career assistance hand-in-hand with clinical support to help young people with mental illness enter the workforce and reach their full potential,” Minister Ruston said. Nationally, the ongoing and expanded Individual Placement and Support Program will allow more than 6,000 Australians under the age of 25 experiencing mental illness to access a range of specialist vocational and employment support services.

Classrooms can go into the running for a visit from rugby league legend Johnathan Thurston with Get Ready Queensland’s 2021 schools’ competition. Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development, Local Government, Infrastructure and Planning Steven Miles encouraged all primary schools to enter the competition, which helps students learn about natural disasters and how to prepare for them in a creative way.

“As all parents know, our children are great at motivating households and schools to take action, and the Get Ready Queensland program gives students the information they need to better prepare their families and schools for severe weather events,” the Deputy Premier said. “Being prepared can be as simple as knowing your local risks, updating your emergency plan, packing an emergency kit, getting to know your neighbours and tidying up the yard.” Teachers can select a range of activities from the Get Ready Queensland website including worksheets, a snakes and ladders style board game and online challenge for students to complete. To enter, teachers need to take photographs of students completing the activities and submit online. Get Ready Queensland Ambassador Johnathan Thurston said the Get Ready program helped Queenslanders to protect themselves and loved ones in times of disaster. “I can’t wait to visit the winning school and talk with students about the disaster risks in their area and the steps they can take as a family and school community to prepare for them. Secret lives of dingoes HOW does a wongari spend his time on K’gari? According to amazing footage captured by a camera collar, he eats midgym berries, goes for long walks in the bush and on the beach, visits a township and spends plenty of time with his mate. In a world first, the Department of Environment and Science (DES) has released stunning footage downloaded from the camera collar which was fitted to the adult wongari (dingo) in May. Ranger in Charge Linda Behrendorff said the tracking collar captures 30 seconds of footage every 15 minutes and provided crucial insight into the movements of wongari around the island. “The camera and tracking collar, developed by LOTEK, has uncovered the secret lives of wongari on K’gari (Fraser Island),” Ms Behrendorff said. “This is superb footage and shows us where the wongari goes, how and where he finds food and water and gives us an intimate view of the time he spends with his mate.” “For almost a month, the camera collar captured footage of the wongari and tracked him travelling hundreds of kilometres throughout the northern part of the island. “We can see him and his mate loitering at the Orchid Beach township and being photographed by residents or visitors. “There’s a scene where he’s eating berries in the bush and fish on the beach and another

scene where he’s eating alongside his mate in bushland. “The vision shows the wongari and his mate high in the dunes and looking down on the beach, running through the bush, around inland water bodies, along the tracks and waking up in the morning together.” “We have never seen anything like this before, and it shows that wongari are opportunistic feeders, taking advantage of any food source they find.” Ms Behrendorff said the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) fitted two tracking collars to two wongari following several incidents at the Orchid Beach township. “Tracking collars are one of a number of management techniques we use to monitor wongari after increased risks of negative interactions or incidents with residents or visitors to the island,” she said. “It’s obvious from the footage that the tracking collar doesn’t cause issues for the wongari, in terms of feeding, moving about the island and interacting with his mate. “The collar features an inbuilt drop-off mechanism that releases after a set period of time, which allows rangers to track it and retrieve it. “Since 2011, QPWS have regularly used tracking collars on K’gari regularly to monitor the movements of

wongari to help us develop better management programs, including people management. “The use of tracking collars is approved by an independent Animal Ethics Committee, and they are used around the world to assist wildlife authorities to manage animal/human interactions.” QPWS remains committed to working closely with the Butchulla Peoples in the management of K’gari’s iconic wongari and its World Heritage renowned natural and cultural values.

Visitors to K’gari are reminded to be dingo safe:

• Young children must be kept within arm’s reach at all times; • Walk in groups; • Camp in fenced areas where possible; • Do not run. Running or jogging can trigger a negative dingo interaction; • Never feed dingoes; • Never store food or food containers in tents; and • Secure all rubbish, fish and bait; • Walk with a stick

AFL: The Hervey Bay Bombers have completed the 2021 regular Wide Bay AFL season undefeated, even though they did not play the final round. The Bombers were scheduled to play Across the Waves last week, but ATW has forfeited the match due to not having enough players to field a team. It is an interesting decision considering that their reserve grade team has a bye in the final round. The forfeit by ATW is not

favourable for the Hervey Bay Bombers. They last played a competitive match on August 7 and will not play until the grand final on 4 September. Bombers coach Darren Baldwin was extremely disappointed with ATW’s decision to forfeit. “It is out of our control, and we will conduct an intra-club game to get some match fitness,” he said. Across the Waves will play Bay Power this week in the preliminary final at Norm

McLean Oval. Local cynics believe the forfeit is a ploy to slow the Bombers juggernaut down and save players for this week’s preliminary final. Bay Power did not follow a similar course when they played Brothers Bulldogs in Bundaberg. The Hervey Bay Bombers reserve’s team also finished the season undefeated. The club has also established the Roar regional training program. “Brisbane Roar is a proud Queensland club and we are extremely pleased to be returning to the Fraser Coast this year,” Brisbane Roar CEO David Pourre said. “We have a very strong relationship with the Fraser Coast Regional Council which continues to deliver great outcomes for young boys and girls through the Skills Training Centre.” The exhibition game, which is free to watch, will be very popular, Cr Seymour said. “While it was cancelled last year due to COVID-19, more than 3,000 spectators turned out for the 2019 event,” he said. The local team will be chosen from the Wide Bay Premier League – representing the best players in the league. In 2019 the Wide Bay team was up one-nil at half-time before the Roar fought back for a 4-1 finish. “The game and the training camp boosts the region by giving Fraser Coast players access to top-of-the-line

Queensland’s premier football team, the Brisbane Roar, will visit the Fraser Coast for a training camp and an exhibition game on Saturday 28 August. “The regular visits by the

coaching and mentoring from the Roar as well as focussing attention on the fantastic facilities at the Fraser Coast Sport and Recreation Precinct,” Cr Seymour said. The visit is part of a threeyear sponsorship agreement between the Roar and the Fraser Coast Regional Council. Under the agreement the Brisbane Roar has established a Skills Training Centre at the Fraser Coast Sports and Recreation Precinct to help develop talented footballers between Gympie and Mackay. “By attracting state and national teams and fixtures to the Fraser Coast, Council helps develop the skills of locals through coaching clinics, mentoring programs, participation in exhibition matches and just being able to watch games involving elite athletes,” Cr Daniel Sanderson said. “The visit is also an opportunity for sporting clubs to attract members and increase community participation in sport.”

With less than 150 days to Christmas, now is the time for community groups to apply for a Fraser Coast Regional Council grant. “A number of grants are open for community groups to stage events, festive season (Christmas and New Year) events and for festive season decorations for our smaller

townships,” Cr Paul Truscott said. “Changes to the guidelines that were introduced to make it easier for groups to gain a grant in recognition of the effects of COVID-19 have been maintained. “In recognition that fundraising efforts have been hampered and membership numbers may have declined because of COVID-19, Council has lowered the amount of cash or in-kind contribution a group has to put towards a project to qualify for a grant. “We want to make sure clubs, groups and communities continue to function and provide the range of events and facilities that make the Fraser Coast such a vibrant, fun and safe community.” Council’s Community Grants officer is available to assist groups to develop and submit applications to the Community Grants Program. SOFTBALL: Hervey Bay Softball’s representative players and coaches received a coaching session from Softball Queensland High-Performance coach Fabian Barlow last weekend. Barlow was in attendance to prepare the Hervey Bay teams and coaches as they get set for the state championships. Hervey Bay Softball Association President Donna Jenkins believed the visit could only improve the players and the association. “He has coached at the elite level and has a lot of knowledge to impart. Just changing some little aspects of the player’s techniques and giving the coaches pointers

will sharpen us at the state championships and beyond,” she said. Barlow was pleased to be able to attend Hervey Bay and offer his support to the association. “It is great to provide some support and assist in preparing the coaches and the players,” he said. Barlow believes it also allows him to view the standards of players and coaches in the regions. “The region has produced

some outstanding players, and it looks as if they are continuing down the same path,” Barlow said.
