RED Bike is a charity organisation that raises money for Mental Health, suicide prevention programs and Livin.org. by organising events, raffles and more, right here in Hervey Bay. Established in 2020, the signature Red Bike Charity Ride on K’Gari attracted twenty-five bikes and upwards of fifty overall participants. That inaugural event raised $13,000 for the local community. Last year, despite the challenges arising from COVID, more than $25,000 was raised. The hyper-local committee of Scott Gilchrist, Bernard Coppens, Brendon Jackson, Craig Taylor and Danielle Mares are focussed on making access to counselling a simple and easy process.
“We were very pleased to be able to present a cheque to the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre for $20,000 back in November, which has so far resulted in thirty-six counselling sessions for people within our community who might be doing it a little bit tough,” Danielle Mares from Red Bike said. “Issues such as change caused by COVID, family relationships, grief and loss, assistance with diagnosis, parenting, and school engagement were all supported as a part of the program and we still have a large scope left to assist more members of the community from that grant.” “The donation from Red Bike has allowed responsive counselling, sometimes within a day, to occur at crucial times when it is most needed.
“It is so welcomed in our local community and we cannot thank them enough for the support they are giving,” Tanya Stevenson, CEO Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre said. “Right now, everyone can support the Massive Red Bike Raffle, with more than $11,000 in prizes to be won. So many local businesses, more than fifty in total, have been enormously supportive of the event.” “Purchasing tickets is super easy, You can just use the QR code that is shown here in the newspaper or you can go directly to redbike.org.” The Massive Red Bike Raffle will be drawn at the Beach House Hotel on the 27 March at 3:00pm. You don’t have to be there in person to claim your prize if you win.

My Aged Care face-toface service launches SENIOR Australians in Hervey Bay can now access the aged care system more easily with the new My Aged Care face-to-face services being rolled out in the region. Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said an Aged Care Specialist Officer would be available at the Services Australia Hervey Bay Service Centre to provide senior Australians and their families with personalised support to assist them to navigate the aged care system. “Planning for aged care can be overwhelming for many older Australians and their families.” “Services Australia’s Aged Care Specialist Officer in Hervey Bay can provide in-depth information about aged care services, offering financial information, registration and referral for aged care assessments, and connecting senior Australians with local support services, social workers, interpreters and advocates.” “Having face-to-face service allows seniors and their families to sit down with a service specialist and talk through their aged care needs as well as other health and social services, all in the one location. “This new initiative builds on
the Coalition Government’s My Aged Care website and call centre, making it easier for senior Australians to make decisions about care as they age,” said Mr Pitt. Mr Pitt said he’d like to ensure that senior Australians in Hinkler have more choices and clear information when it comes to the services they access. He said he had written to Minister for Government Services Linda Reynolds when the announcement of this new service was made last year and requested that Hinkler be considered as a priority. The face-to-face service started in Bundaberg in February and now it is available in Hervey Bay. “Whether you’re looking
for help at home or you’re considering a move to residential aged care, Services Australia staff can assist you and step you through the process.” Customers can call the Aged Care Line on 1800 227 475 if they need to: • make an appointment to see an Aged Care Specialist Officer in their area • talk about aged care costs or update their financial details. For support to access Australian Government-funded aged care services, customers can: • go to myagedcare.gov.au • call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 • visit a service centre in their area to speak with someone face-to-face.

Pine tree residue could help power Queensland WITH petrol costs soaring and a new UN climate change report on the need to reduce emissions, USC-led research on the Fraser Coast points to the potential of producing bioenergy from harvest waste across SEQ pine plantations. Bioenergy produced from harvest waste across pine plantations could significantly reduce net carbon emissions and nurture an emerging industry, according to university research. The collaborative research through USC’s Forest Research Institute shows the potential environmental and economic benefits of replacing fossil fuels with bioenergy generated from the branches, tops of trees and stem wood left behind after trees are logged for mills. The paper led by Leanda Garvie, a USC accounting academic with a science background, has been published in the MDPI journal Forests, with co-authors Stephen Roxburgh from the CSIRO and Fabiano Ximenes from the NSW Department of Primary Industries. PhD student Ms Garvie said the Toolara-Tuan Forest Estate was the case study for the research, which used maths modelling to estimate the quantity of harvest residue available as a potential energy source, and the emissions
Leanda Garvie researching pine trees residue as fuel reductions that could be achieved. “Plantation forests are a great example of renewable biomass. As we regrow the forest, the trees draw carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere, produce timber products that store the carbon throughout their lifetime and can also be a source of a renewable energy replacing fossil fuels.” “We found large volumes of harvest residue currently available at the case study site, an important forest in SEQ’s softwood pine plantations estate which covers more than 100,000 hectares along the coast from Beerburrum to Maryborough, and at Bundaberg,” she said.
“In the Toolara-Tuan Forest Estate alone, the modelling identified up to 8,000 dry tonnes of harvest residue that could be available to generate bioenergy each year. “If that material was burned or processed to replace coalfired electricity, it could reduce emissions by more than 20,000 tonnes each year.” The results found that forest residue bioenergy would be a viable alternative to traditional energy sources, offering substantive emission reductions, with the potential to contribute towards renewable energy and emission reduction targets in Queensland. Ms Garvie, who is supervised
by USC Professor of Forestry Operations Mark Brown, said the research would be valuable to other Australian regions exploring the viability of developing local bioenergy industries to produce electricity, heat or transport fuel. “Currently, there is some use of mill waste to generate bioenergy in Queensland’s commercial forestry industry, but our study found that this could be expanded to include large quantities of harvest waste which is in plentiful supply,” she said. “There is strong industry interest and a ready market, and the technology to achieve this scale is already well established in places such as Europe. She said the research was the first time that FullCAM – a national tool for calculating and reporting Australia’s carbon emissions to the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory – had been used to assess forest residue bioenergy at a project level in Queensland. The next stage of her PhD into the social and economic sustainability of harvest residue bioenergy will involve surveying experts and stakeholders to identify the key drivers and trade-offs for forest bioenergy in Queensland.
THE FIRM WORDS with Melissa Guilfoyle
Feminism
The Oppression of Men or the Advancement of Women? OFF the back of International Women’s Day which was on the 8th of March, I thought it was important to reflect on why we celebrate women and how far we have come. The word Feminism has both positive and negative connotations attached to it. Some perceive it as the advancement of women to the detriment of men, while others perceive it to be the advancement of women to equalise rights between the genders. The former is a Radical Approach, the latter is mainstream (Liberal) feminism. While there is a spectrum of Feminist movements in all political spheres, Liberal Feminism is by definition the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of the equality of the sexes. Some of the rights that we have today were based on feminist movements championing women over the years - The right to own property (1897), the right to vote (1902), the right to be elected into Parliament (1943) the right to drink in a public bar (1965), the right to work in Government if they were married (1966). Feminism is not saying men
should not have rights to anything women have fought for. Feminism is not saying that women should be considered a priority for anything before a man is considered. Mainstream feminism is saying that women should be considered equally. Some affirmative action has been taken to encourage women into positions that they have traditionally been overlooked for due to unconscious bias or simply the lack of opportunity – such as on Boards. It is not encouraging unqualified people to fill a position to “meet the quota”, it is not saying men cannot do the same job, it is encouraging women to be part of decision making, representing a demographic that had been historically overlooked. So, the next time someone asks you if you are a feminist, remember that a mainstream feminist encourages women to be considered equal and does not encourage the oppression of men – it is not seeking to take away men’s rights, but rather to ensure that women have them. If you think that you have been discriminated against based on your gender, please contact The Firm to make an appointment with a Solicitor.

HBRSL COMMUNITY
Grant to assist community play
FRASER COASTERS Wheelchair Basketball has received a grant for $1,000 to help cover the cost of their upcoming Wheelchair Basketball Community Challenge. ‘Community organisations, businesses, school and other community groups are encouraged to join in the fun and participate in Wheelchair Basketball for the very first time’ Michael Oxley Head Coach and Manager of Player Pathways said. ‘This is a fantastic way for members of the broader community to come along and try wheelchair basketball. Maybe take themselves out of their comfort zone’. ‘It’s going to be a great fun day and we are really calling on the community to become involved. It assists to break down barriers and exposes people to a greater awareness of the sport and the athletes that play it’. There are currently around twenty
regular wheelchair basketball players in Hervey Bay, who are looking to grow the sport. Each year they participate in regional competitions involving Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Brisbane. Hervey Bay is also home to State Championship players and an Australian under 25’s player. ‘The sport is relatively new to our area and the group have been in existence since 2019. The Wheelchair Basketball Community Challenge is a great way to showcase the talents and most of all, to have a laugh and a bit of fun along the way’. The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program is part of the RSL’s ongoing commitment to the local community. The program is designed to provide financial, in-kind and fundraising opportunities to local not-for-profit organisations struggling to gain support.
Mission to shave the world THE MAIN ‘shave week’ for the World’s Greatest Shave took place last week, with locals participating in the event to raise awareness and vital funds for the Leukemia Foundation to further lifesaving research and support families facing blood cancer. Councillor David Lee took up the challenge by shaving to a number one length and colouring his hair bright blue. “I haven’t had my hair this short since I was in the army about 30 years ago!” He was challenged to dye his hair by a local Tai Chi group member who said they would donate more if he coloured his hair. The Leukemia Foundation event took place in the Stockland Shopping Centre, attracting many onlookers. The group raised over $1000 on the day. Cr Lee said he wanted to support the worthy cause in its mission to eradicate all leukemia deaths by 2035. “Late last year I was ill; it wasn’t leukemia or cancer and anything like that, but I’ve done a lot of reflection since that time about how there is bad luck sometimes and serious illness can take you out.” “I’m fit and well again and I’m in a position now to be able to make a constructive contribution to raising funds.” The former health worker said he had many years of nursing people with leukemia and understood its impact on
Cr David Lee joins Bayside Christine College Principal Brian Grimes people’s lives and jumped at the opportunity to get involved this year. Cr Lee was joined by the Bayside Christian College’s new principal Brian Grimes in the shaving event. According to the Leukemia Foundation, more than 110,000 people are living with the devastating impact of Australia’s second most diagnosed cancer. Over 50 Australians are told every day they have blood cancer with 15 people losing their life to blood cancer daily. Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are types of blood cancer. They can develop in anyone, at any time, at any age.
“It’s basically a deformity in the bone marrow, it generates abnormal cells which deplete the white blood cell count and of course, white blood cells are absolutely critical for fighting infection,” said Cr Lee. Money raised through campaigns such as World’s Greatest Shave allows the Leukaemia Foundation to offer expert support and fund leading-edge research to make a change for Australians facing blood cancer. Online book club for locals
FRASER Coast Libraries members can join a new, free, online book club and watch live video chats between authors every month following the launch of Ben’s Book Club. Brisbane author Ben Hobson will chat with authors whose books will be available to library members to read as an eBook, or listen to as an eAudiobook, for free via the Libby app. Cr David Lewis said the launch event would feature Queensland-born writer Maryrose Cuskelly and her novel The Cane, a story about the disappearance of a 16-yearold girl in a north Queensland sugar town. He said the real-life disappearance of Mackay girl Marilyn Wallman in 1972, while riding her bike to school, made a lasting impression on the author. “Maryrose has already written about Marilyn’s disappearance and the way it percolated through her childhood and now has created this fictional story dealing with some of the same themes,” Cr Lewis said. “Unlimited numbers of Fraser Coast Libraries members can borrow The Cane as an eBook or eAudiobook simultaneously through our Libby app and then join the author talk online on March 22 – all for free.” Cr Lewis said he was delighted that Libby had launched the online book club

Surf Life Saving champ reflects on 50 years service
A LIFE of service and dedication to Surf Life Saving has provided a Hervey Bay man with half a century of memories and proud moments that he is thankful for and urges more people to get involved. Robert Garland signed up to be a Nipper at the tender age of 11 years old in 1969 on the Gold Coast, becoming one of the first Queensland Nippers.
“Mum got a bit sick and tired of me at home. She said you're going to go down and do some Nippers down the beach.” A decision he has not regretted, said the Hervey Bay Surf Club member who was given the honour of life membership in 2014. “Becoming a life member was a very proud moment.” “I think I've done in all close
to nearly 40 years of patrols over a 50 year span,” said Mr Garland. He moved to Hervey Bay in 1992 and joined the Outrigger Canoe Club, where his passion for the surf was reignited; he joined the Hervey Bay Surf Club in 1995. “It was only a small outfit then after being reformed in the 80s.” “My kids got involved for a

He said the facilities had expanded to accommodate the first aid area, office, plethora of training, competition and rescue equipment and space for the everpopular bar. “We’ve got a significant demand on our resources with 150 plus Nippers on a regular basis and about 50 senior members competing at some level.” He said the club had evolved to become a reliable community emergency service. “We cover from Point Vernon to Urangan on the beach and then beyond the call to people like Marine Rescue. “In the case of emergencies, we're a second responder with emergency equipment, Local icon, Robert Garland has been serving witht the Surf Life Savers for we've got a lot of skills over 50 years across surf lifesaving. who get swept out after a little lifesaving.” “It's not just doing beach swim.” “I often quote vigilance and patrols; there's rescue and you There may not be deaths, service as a lifesaving motto, know, radio and community but Mr Garland said, “Behind that's over 100 years old. engagement. that, there are literally Mr Garland encourages “We're good at that stuff, it’s hundreds of preventions.” anyone interested in getting what we're trained for.” “We do a lot of first aid involved with the iconic Mr Garland said he was with people who sprain institution's many aspects to very thankful that Hervey Bay their ankles, step on shells come down and have a look. is generally a very safe place and rocks or get hit with “You don’t have to commit for people in the water but stingrays.” to a lifetime of service, but of attributes the low dangers to Mr Garland said he loved course, we’d like everyone to the safety precautions in place being a part of a bigger be as committed as possible.” by the Surf Club. “It is a passion and a “We probably do about three network with long-standing traditions and many diverse demand on you if you want to rescues a year.” roles. take it on.” “There’s a zero drowning “There’s a sense of “We are in charge of people’s goal across Australia for surf camaraderie and tradition lives; wherever there’s water lifesaving, unfortunately that’s doing patrols.” there’s a hazard and a risk of not always achieved but in He appreciated the club's people drowning.” Hervey Bay we average three historic ties to the Navy and “Come down on a Saturday rescues a year. marine heritage. afternoon from 3 o’clock and “They’re not the traditional “We’ve got a background join our Saturday afternoon surf beach rescues; we do a lot out in the deeper waters, of beach flag patrols at drink session and you can get even though it’s shallow in the Anzac Cove; a lot of returned to meet members there or the bay but there are a lot of kite servicemen came back to Sunday morning where we surfers, catamarans, people Australia and started surf have the Nippers.

Scooting to safety with lowered speeds
ROADS and footpaths will be safer in Hervey Bay for commuters as the Government rolls out new measures to better regulate electric scooters. A suite of new actions to help ensure e-scooter riders, cyclists, motorists, and pedestrians can safely share spaces will include stronger laws like lower speeds on footpaths, mandated safety measures, a safety education campaign and clearer signage and markings. The reforms have been prompted by the upswing in the use of e-scooters across the state, “The rising popularity of e-scooters is a clear sign they aren’t going to disappear,” the Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said. In addition to privately owned e-scooters, Hervey Bay has seen a dramatic rise in e-scooters use since the introduction of the first ride-share commercial trial started last year, with e-scooters seen all over the city. Mr Bailey said the reforms would see speed limits slashed on footpaths to 12 kilometres an hour. “We are seeing far too many injuries in e-scooter users that are the result
of speeding and many pedestrians feeling unsafe on footpaths,” said Mr Bailey. “Our footpaths are there for everyone so e-scooter riders will need to slow down on footpaths to 12 km/h in future.” The reforms will explore tougher laws to give police better tools to enforce speed limits and drink riding will also be further explored to crack down on rogue e-scooter riders endangering others. Police Minister Mark Ryan said the Queensland Police Service would be part of a new Personal Mobility Device Safety Reference Group. “We know many people do the right thing, and our officers do a great job at policing dangerous behaviour already,” the Minister said. “But with new rules and regulations, we will be better equipped to keep the public safe.” Virginia McComish, manager of Bird e-scooter rentals in Hervey Bay
welcomed the firmer laws regarding clearer signage, “People follow signs; we’re used to driving and following signs, it’s not hard.” She said she was in a riding group that promoted safe riding practices for all. Regarding the reduced speed

people and even say gday with usually a grunt or angry look. I will continue to scoot it’s actually nicer to scoot to work than drive
Margaret Jobbings: I am a walker. I don’t ride the scooters but I think these new rules etc, are a little too late. These measures should have been foreseen and put in place before the scooters became available. We are very fortunate here as we have the mobility corridor and a good esplanade path that is well maintained, but I have witnessed some really dangerous behaviour by the scooter hirers. Kathryn Rodda: I really dislike seeing them dumped all over town. These are expensive things and being treated like rubbish. I also
Natalie Hertrick: We purchased 2 of our own recently, we both scoot to work on them weather permitting. I do think on the esplanade there should be speed limits of 12 kms an hour for not only scooters but bicycles both electric and normal along with mobility scooters. I travel from Urangan to Main Street for work and I’ve had more delicate moments with mobility scooters and pedestrians , I think due to the fact I’m on a scooter and the bad reputation the minority has given them. I always slow to under 10kms when passing
limit to 12 kilometres per hour, Ms McComish was not as supportive, “I think they should cut the speed to 15 not 12.” The current e-scooter speed limit in Hervey Bay are 25 kilometres per hour in most areas and ten kilometres
May Mulhare: I am 80 and our new game when out and about is ‘spot’ the scooter. I think they look like great fun but I also fear there will be some bad accidents with them. Neica Hall: On Sunday night we saw 2 young girls on one scooter, no helmets riding on the road. I think it is only a matter of time until someone dies or is very seriously injured. Collette Fackrell-Taylor: I reckon they’re brilliant. Just a shame some misuse them
per hour in highly populated areas such as around the Urangan Pier, the Esplanade at Torquay and Scarness, the All Abilities Playground and WetSide. Bird e-scooters are on a six month Council approved commercial trial, ending at the end of March. Ms McComish was optimistic about the future of the ride-share business, “It’s been an incredible turnout. The good far outweighs the bad and the business is highly profitable.” “Without a single doubt, there’s more demand than there is supply for it.” The fleet currently comprises 300 e-scooters, with plans to expand to 500. The Advertiser was curious what the community thought about the e-scooters hire trial and gathered feedback through Facebook. The post garnered the most engagement, with over 300 people commenting on how they felt. Tallying up responses revealed an
overwhelming acceptance of the e-scooter hires. Still, concerns were raised around safety, misuse and damage, and many people felt they were an eyesore being left all over town. Many people suggested changes such as penalties for damages and the introduction of docking stations to park the e-scooters. Ms McComish said part of the trial was to identify hot spots where they are commonly picked up and dropped off. She said they were using that data and working with Council to identify the best places to install permanent docking stations. Other plans include new expanded premises incorporating a retail store and repair workshop, a first for the region, and holding community events. Ms McComish said they planned to run events and offer more for the younger generation. “We want to keep the community happy; because of the success of the business, we are able to give back to the community.”
Wendy Newton: They are a pain left lying about everywhere and the ones using them don't care much about pedestrians they can be very dangerous
Josh Peaker: I was saying to someone just the other day how great that it is and how accessible it makes the whole town to younger kids, some don’t have $900 to buy a scooter but they might have a spare $20/week they could use to get around. When (eventually) this town stops turning into a sea of houses and the council get productive about small business, it’s a perfect way for some friends to ride to/from/between a bunch of different activities on offer for kids. Hopefully the activities distract the ones that are bored and destroy things like this.
Emma Ruffe: I understand why people like them, and i know a lot of people use them to get to and from work, but I cringe everytime someone flies past the playgrounds on them. There have been so many accidents from people stepping out and not being seen by the riders. If it was a small child, I dread to think what would happen. The esplanade paths have too many hidden bends and turns. Maybe keep them but not to be ridden on the Esplanade footpath?
Renae Eichner: They’re fantastic, would be a massive loss if they disappear as they’ve become a bit of a go to now.

Beware of mosquitoes in wake of floods and heavy rain
Residents are being urged to take precautions against mosquito-borne illnesses in the wake of the recent severe weather and a public health alert about Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV). The public health alert was issued by Queensland Health following the detection of a human case of JEV in Queensland. Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said residents could take simple but effective steps to minimise the risk of mosquito bites. “Applying insect repellent, wearing loose clothes to cover arms and legs and wearing closed-in shoes can significantly increase protection against mosquito bites,” he said. “This is critical for people who may need to clean-up in and around their properties affected by recent rainfall and flooding because standing water allows mosquitoes to breed in large numbers. “Residents should check stored goods which may provide a breeding site, like pot plant
containers, buckets and other equipment stored around sheds.” Cr Paul Truscott said some of the most common mosquito-borne illnesses are Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus, though these are only some of what can be spread by a mosquito bite. He said most people infected with the JEV virus are asymptomatic, but it can cause fever, headaches and rashes. Cr Everard said, “Council will be using larvicide treatment in breeding areas to reduce mosquito numbers and will be using residual barrier treatments in select sensitive locations such as schools, community halls and high use areas.” “This treatment, which can be an effective control method for up to eight weeks, is done on the exterior of buildings using low toxicity chemicals and would occur outside business hours where possible. “Over coming weeks, Council officers will be continually assessing and reviewing treatment locations and reapplying treatments as necessary.” Cr Truscott said most mosquito bites would result in no issues or symptoms, but it was important people speak with their doctor if they experience body aches, diarrhoea, headaches, fever, feelings of nausea, or any other notable symptoms. For more information about mosquito borne diseases and prevention, visit https:// www.health.qld.gov.au/public-health/topics/ infection-control/mosquito-borne-dengue
Super size grants to help community organisations
The new Gambling Community Benefit (GCBF) annual ‘super round’ is now open for not-for-profit and community groups to apply for funding. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman said unlike other rounds of the grants program that have grants of up to $35,000 on offer, this ‘super round’ is providing grants of up to $100,000 to go towards projects that benefit local communities across the State. “I want our community organisations to ‘think big’ and apply for large projects that will make a real difference in their communities,” Minister Fentiman said. “Already our grants have supported local sporting clubs in regional areas to build new facilities, domestic violence support services to reach more women and families and PCYCs to upgrade equipment. In 2022, there will be four rounds of GCBF funding – one round offering grants from $500 to $100,000 and the other three rounds offering grants from $500 to $35,000. Please visit the Gambling Community Benefit Funding program website for more information. For any questions about an application or using your grant, contact cbf@justice.qld.gov.

Bay man named shadow player for World Cup HERVEY Bay local, Neil Bradshaw has been selected as a shadow hockey player to compete at the Masters Hockey World Cup in the Over 40 Men Division. The news was announced by the Hockey Australia Masters Committee (HAMC) following the Masters Invitational Event in Sydney. The tournament is scheduled for 12-21 August in Nottingham, England. Mr Bradshaw said he was excited and surprised when he was named for the younger category than he would normally play. “I didn’t have a lot of hope of being chosen as it was the younger category, and you’re competing against guys... about nine years younger than me.” “It’s a good feeling to have recognition at that level.” Mr Bradshaw, the General Manager of Hit 101.7 and Triple M radio stations, was originally selected in 2019 to compete in the 2020 World Cup in the Australian Over 45 team (his correct age group) but COVID threw a spanner in the works for the games going ahead. “It was then moved to 2021 and Hockey Australia told us the team would stay the same.” COVID prevented the 2021 games from going ahead and a new selection process took place in February this year in

Neil Bradshaw named as shadow hockey goal keeper for World Cup Sydney. While they were in Sydney Hockey Australia announced the Over 45 team would not be competing due to safety concerns of playing that tournament in South Africa. At this point, Mr Bradshaw put up his hand to be considered for the younger team. Mr Bradshaw has been playing hockey for around 35 years, playing at state and national levels. He said his greatest achievement was being chosen to be a part of the squad to play the World Cup in 2020, “It was such a big buzz because we were in WA and had just finished the national titles…we were on our way to the airport when they called me with the news.” Although skill is a huge factor in his hockey achievement, Mr Bradshaw said perseverance and commitment to the game helped. “As a kid, I never got
picked for a rep team in Maryborough, let alone anything else…the first time I was selected for anything was when I was about 40 years old.” “Hockey for me is a great outlet, I love the team environment and challenging myself to compete.” Mr Bradshaw said while he was very excited to be announced as a shadow player, there is no guarantee he will be attending the tournament in the UK. He said it was a waiting game to see if someone pulled out to enable him to take their place. Several factors will determine if players pull out, such as being available for three weeks and having the funds to cover the approximately self-funded $5000 travel expenses to attend. Mr Bradshaw will compete in the state titles in April and hopes to be selected for the Queensland team to compete in the nationals in September.

Community first focus for new Torbay Chief Executive When Christine Lilley was appointed as the new CEO for Torbay Lifestyle and Care, it was a homecoming of sorts.
It wasn’t the previous eight and a half years she had already served at Torbay as the Finance and Administration Manager, but more so how proud she was to be appointed to the CEO’s position of such a long-standing community organisation. A community in which she grew up. She went to primary school and high school here. A move saw a completion of her education and university, with a pathway to becoming a Chartered Accountant. Already knowing the business intimately certainly placed Christine in the perfect position to succeed the previous CEO, however her impressive body of work across many different senior positions was vital in her selection. With distinct business units stretching across independent retirement living with 159 villas, 134 residential aged care beds which includes respite and a specialist twenty-nine bed dementia care unit, today’s Torbay is an expansive care provider. By any measure, Torbay is a large business. A far cry from the original donated land back in the 1970’s and the raffles that were held to raise funds for construction. That was the genesis of the very first aged care facility in Hervey Bay. Since that time, generations have made Torbay their home. When you add the commercial building company Torbay Constructions to the mix, whose work stretches all over the region, you begin to get some sense of the operations under her gaze. ‘We have just over 200 staff here as well as a vitally important team of volunteers that assist with the residents. Torbay is a 24/7 business’. Christine said. ‘One thing that we have always been extremely passionate about, is supporting local business. Torbay injects tens of millions of dollars into the Hervey Bay community and we strive to have a buy-local policy, whenever that is possible’ ‘Overall, our roots resonate our goals for the future, providing friendly family based care, making sure our residents are provided the best possible care and being a key stakeholder in activities offsite and out in the general community. That is what is important to us’. It is from speaking with Christine, that her passion for the role is absolute and being mum to a bubbly four year old, only further underpins her multi-tasking nature. ‘I absolutely love what I do and I want people to know and understand how much Torbay considers itself to be a long term part of the community. That brings me great joy and we will strive to continue that vision’

SCHOOL SPORT: The annual Fraser Coast Anglican College Rugby 7’s and Netball carnival was held last weekend, with schools from around the state converging on the Hervey Bay campus. The annual and former Fraser Coast sporting event of the year has moved to a Friday to allow more schools to attend and compete. It also allows the school’s students to watch some quality sport. Twenty-four teams from as far away as Central Queensland and the Gold Coast competed in the rugby tournament this year. “This tournament allows schools developing rugby the opportunity to start the season and play several teams at a similar level,” Fraser Coast Anglican College’s David Brown said. In the Fast Five netball competition, twelve teams attended with a boys’ team from Bundaberg, for the first time. “Having the boys team come in has

TG’s Child Care Blends in Indigenous Program for a Sustainable Future with Beach and Bush Kindy Activities TG’s Urangan has been incorporating Butchulla culture into our curriculum. This consists of fortnightly Beach and Bush Kindee Excursions where the children get to explore and listen to stories from the Butchulla culture on their walks. Butchulla’s three lores also align beautifully with TG’s sustainability values (social, economic and environmental).
The 3 Butchulla Lores are: 1. What is good for the land comes first. 2. Do not take or touch anything that doesn’t belong to you. 3. If you have plenty, you must share.
Long Day Care and Kindergarten • Licensed for 75 places • Children aged six weeks to six years • All day long from 6.30 am to 6.30 pm, Monday to Friday • 52 weeks per year
Learning about indigenous culture is part of identity building for the children. They realise how they are all connected to their culture, their past, their community, and to their environment. When the children see how people took care of each other and their environment in the past, they naturally learn how to go forward to make a better future for their planet and their communities. NEWSINBRIEF Good grass growing weather With about 800 parks, gardens and recreation areas to mow and maintain, Fraser Coast Regional Council staff are working hard to stay ahead of the grass. The recent rain and warm weather means the grass is growing - rapidly, Fraser
Coast Mayor George Seymour said. And while the rain makes the grass grow, it also makes the ground soggy which slows mowing efforts. “We have to wait for the soggy areas, especially floodhit areas, to dry out otherwise the mowers bog up the ground damaging the turf and leaving a mess,” Cr Seymour said. The Council has 79 outdoor parks and garden staff to
maintain more than 800 parks, gardens and recreation areas across the Fraser Coast. On the ground the Council has 40 ride-on mowers of various sizes in the mowing fleet. “We also use contractors to slash roadsides and some of the larger open areas,” Cr Daniel Sanderson said. “Even then it takes about four weeks for the staff to make one circuit of the
region’s parks. “Staff are also trying to clean up flood damage. “While staff are going their hardest to get around, some parks may not be as manicured as they are normally. “If your park is overgrown then I apologise, but we are doing our best. “The parks are on a mowing schedule and we physically cannot get around any faster.”

A PART OF YOUR COMMUNITY
Pride and gratitude at the forefront of growth
IT HAS been amazing to take a moment to sit back and reflect on the evolution of our business. Since the commencement of Wide Bay Motor Group in August 2009, it has been a journey of enormous pride and gratitude. The pride we feel is borne out of our progress as an organisation. Implementing and adopting a guest centric culture at the core of what we do, has been fundamental to our ability to grow and to achieve our collective ambitions. It has helped attract a superb calibre of people to our operation. People who share our values; people who have been willing and able to contribute to our efforts to be a better place to do business; people who appreciate the importance of engaging and contributing back to our community; people who are here for far more than a weekly pay packet. This in turn, has helped attract the very best type of business that we could wish to engage in, repeat and referral business which now forms a very large component of our annual sales results. Committed people in are in each and every division, some learning and growing, some at the very pinnacle of what they do, proudly representing our company every day and who at some point have made a conscious decision to come and work for Wide Bay Motor Group. Through their efforts, we have seen multiple prestigious industry awards bestowed upon our business. In 2022 alone we have enjoyed yet another Mazda Master Dealer Award (4th consecutive year), acknowledged as the best Provincial Mazda Dealership in Australia. This weekend in Brisbane we will be presented with ‘Excellence Awards’ from Toyota Australia for our performances in Parts Sales;
Guest Experience; Marketing and Business Management. In a few short weeks, in line with the conclusion of the Japanese financial year we shall better understand our achievements with Mitsubishi and their National Distinguished
Dealer programme and we are feeling confident about our performance this year. We feel thankful for the brands we represent and our relationships with our business partners that allow us to consistently enjoy unmatched new vehicle market shares locally. We feel gratitude too for being able to practice business in the Fraser Coast region, where we enjoy incredibly high levels of loyalty from our many and varied customer bases. In 2022, we will complete 26,000 jobs in our Service workshops, including retail servicing, repairs, warranty work and recalls. In Sales, we will manage more than 10,000 sales enquiries to generate 2,600 vehicle deliveries, even under dramatically reduced production volumes from the motor manufacturing plants overseas. This year we will also see our Parts Department receipt, process and dispatch in excess of $7M of genuine parts and accessories to our trade, panel and internal customers. The sheer volume of Customer interactions required to achieve these numbers means we need a very capable staff contingent to deliver great outcomes. I acknowledge that this year, just like last year and the one before, and despite our very best intentions, that not every transaction will be executed to our desired standard. However, what is important is a genuine commitment from all to deliver a great Customer experience accompanied by a desire to improve year on year. We understand that the Customer experience journey has no destination. There is no ‘perfect’ but we want to always strive to deliver to the very best of our ability and do better today than what we did yesterday. That really is a tribute to the team I work with.
