International visitors bring a sigh of relief to many

AFTER almost two years of being closed to the world, Australia has opened the international borders to all fully vaccinated visa holders, breathing a sigh of relief for many in the tourism industry on the Fraser Coast. From 21 February, the country welcomed the return of tourists, business travellers, and other visitors to the country, the start of a revitalisation to a sector that experienced a downturn due to the virus and the loss of foreign visitors. Kingfisher Bay Resort General Manager David Hay is confident of the prospects for the region with the return of international visitors. “The Fraser Coast has so much to offer. Not only will this generate increased visitation for us here on the island, but it will provide that much-needed boost for so many other operators across the region, which is fantastic,” said Mr Hay. “Kingfisher Bay Resort has always been a drawcard for backpackers and international travellers – K’gari is a true bucket list destination for people right across the globe.” “This is a momentous year for us too – Kingfisher Bay Resort is turning 30, and to welcome international visitors back again is the perfect way to kick off the celebrations.” After a challenging two years for the tourism operator, Mr Hay is looking forward to the benefits of having international visitors back. “We, like so many operators throughout Queensland and across the country, have

experienced critical staffing shortages. “Naturally our operational capacity has been impacted; the frequency of island tours, to our food and beverage outlet hours, however we’re looking ahead and are ready to welcome international travellers and working holidaymakers alike, back to paradise on K’gari,” said Mr Hay. For travel agency Helloworld Travel Hervey Bay, Manager Joe Minnegal welcomes the easing of restrictions but thinks it will take about 12 months for the travel industry to return to pre-pandemic levels of business. “We have definitely received more enquiries and bookings for tours in the future, but people are still hesitant to make international travel plans for the near future,” said Mr Minnegal. He explained that travel agencies get paid when people take their trips; he hoped people would start to feel confident to travel sooner rather than later. Helloworld Travel Hervey Bay made major business changes during the pandemic, reducing hours and staff taking different jobs, including the manager taking a full-time truck driving job to help pay the bills. “We’ve been very fortunate to have a good landlord for the shop to be able to keep operating; a lot of agencies have shut their doors and are working from home.” Mr Minnegal said people have learned over the past two years that going through

THE HERVEY Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) is calling for sponsors at the next Community Ideas Pitch Night. The unique event, established as part of the Fraser Coast Community Social Plan, has served as a launching pad for some remarkable projects making a real difference in the community. It exists to foster innovation and encourage grassroots ideas that address real issues in our community. HBNC invites local businesses to invest in this project’s future by becoming prize sponsors for the next event, on Tuesday, 22 March at the Hervey Bay Community Centre. Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre CEO, Tanya Stevenson, said the goal of the Pitch Night was simple but profound. “It’s an event that recognises how many amazing ideas are out there in our community that don’t quite have the finances, resources or awareness to really get going,” Ms Stevenson said. “Some amazing projects, including Hope in a Suitcase, Outreach Doctors, Bite the Blue and the Bub Hub got their start or took their next big step at Pitch Night.” Hope in a Suitcase took out the Judges’ Choice award at the November 2020 Pitch Night. This project’s goal was to ensure all Hervey Bay children going into foster care have a suitcase full of age and gender-appropriate belongings

Fraser Coast competes on the national stage TWO of the Fraser Coast’s iconic attractions and one of its signature events have been announced as finalists in national awards. The Hervey Bay Seafood Festival has cemented its ‘must attend’ status with mature-age visitors after being named as a finalist in the national Grey Nomad Awards in the 2021 Best Grey Nomad Festival or Event category. In announcing the finalists, Grey Nomad judges described the long-running Seafood Festival as combining “the three things that mature-age travellers love most – good food at a reasonable price, a social drink, and appropriate entertainment.” First held in 1998, the festival's organisation changed hands to Fraser Coast Tourism & Events in 2021. The 2021 Hervey Bay Seafood Festival, held waterside at Seafront Oval, showcased an array of specialty ‘Signature Seafood’ stalls hosted by some of Hervey Bay’s most renowned restaurants. Awards Director Kim Morgan said the Grey Nomad Awards provide credible information that helps guide visitors in their choices of where to visit, stay and play. She said that the ongoing uncertainty that faced tourism businesses throughout last year made it especially challenging for them to face each day with confidence and the unwavering customer focus necessary to be recognised in these Grey Nomad Awards. “This means we especially want to acknowledge the tremendous commitment that the festival organisers and other finalists demonstrated

this past year,” Ms Morgan said. The Seafood Festival is joined by the Gallipoli to Armistice Memorial as a finalist in the 2021 Grey Nomad awards. The Memorial was a gold winner of 2020 Australian Street Art Award in the Best Monument or Memorial and is vying for gold in the 2021 Best Grey Nomad Trail category after proving to tourism leaders that it provided an exceptional experience for visitors. Silver winner in the 2020 Australian Street Art Awards in the Best Street Art Trail in 2020, the Maryborough Mural Trail has again been shortlisted in 2021 in the Best Street Art Trail section, with the 39-mural trail hoping to go one better this year. Commenting on the Street Art competition, awards

director Liz Rivers said, “Investing in outdoor art as a visitor attraction is also clever economics, as the art is typically less expensive to create than more traditional tourism attractions and the pay-off is handsome,” Ms Rivers said. The judges congratulated Fraser Coast Tourism & Events on a successful year of operation despite the hurdles, saying “older grey nomads in particular are drawn to Australian military stories, and the fact that you have reinforced the highly interactive ‘see, hear, feel’ elements of this trail mean it is a wonderfully emotive and educational mustdo experience.” Winners in all categories of both the Australian Street Art and the Grey Nomad Awards will be announced on Friday 4 March during an online celebration.

MORE trees are being planted along the Maryborough-Hervey Bay Road boundary of the Augustus Estate as part of a beautification and noise blocking project. “Staff from Council’s Natural Environment Team are undertaking the work in response to a petition from residents to help cut road noise,” Cr Jade Wellings said. “The planting includes about 480 small trees and shrubs along the fence line of the development. “The species selected are endemic to the region, are low to medium in height so they will not grow tall to block sunlight reaching solar panels or shade pools; they will attract wildlife; are hardy pest and disease resistant and drought tolerant.” The project is one of a number across the region undertaken by Council staff. “The natural environment is one of our most precious assets,” Cr Wellings said. “As part of our commitment to the environment, Council supports activities that protect, repair and maintain our community reserves.” Two other projects completed by the Natural Environment Team will improve the quality of stormwater water runoff reaching Hervey Bay. The first project was building a bio basin on the corner of Colyton and Bideford Streets, Hervey Bay. The bio basin catches

stormwater from the nearby streets and filters out pollutants and nutrients from the water. “The Council team planted more than 6,000 natives (tube stock) plants into the bio basin which will help filter excess pollutants and nutrients and improve the quality of water flowing into the Pulgul Creek catchment,” Cr Wellings said. Just down the road, 150 advanced native trees were planted in the Raward Road drainage system. “The trees will form corridors and links to nearby vegetation,” Cr Wellings said. “As they mature, the plants will self-seed and contribute more plants to the area which will increase habitat for native animals and help filter

nutrients from stormwater in the drainage system.” The tree plantings are part of the Council’s commitment to building better communities by maintaining the unique natural environment and lifestyle of the Fraser Coast. “Council has a commitment to plant 100,000 trees by 2030,” Cr Wellings said. “Trees absorb carbon dioxide and provide oxygen, improve air quality, conserve water, preserve soil and support wildlife. “Planting 100,000 trees will provide environmental benefits and make our region a more attractive place to reside and visit.” Since the program was introduced in 2019 Council has planted 43,677 trees.

Lend a hand for Clean Up Australia Day

FRASER Coast residents, schools and community groups are urged to get in quick and sign up for the country’s largest community-based environmental event, Clean Up Australia Day (Sunday March 6). Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said there were 47 clean up events hosted across the Fraser Coast in 2021 with 5,660kg of rubbish collected. “Those wanting to get involved this year should log on now to the Clean Up Australia Day website www. cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/ to register their event,” he said. “All community-based participants receive a free ‘Clean Up kit’ containing gloves, bags, sunscreen and other resources, with packs for individuals, families, or groups available. “In appreciation of the community’s effort, Council will also provide some awesome giveaways to all

volunteer groups which register on the CUAD website. “Once your event is registered with CUAD, Council’s Waste Education Officer will contact you by email to organise supplies and giveaways. “If you haven’t registered your event and want help to get started, please feel free to contact Council on 1300 79 49 29 and ask to speak to our Waste Education Officer.” “In the past two years, there has been a significant increase in single-use plastics, alongside unprecedented numbers of face masks, takeaway coffee cups and food packaging littering our footpaths, parks and beaches,” Clean Up Australia Chairman, Pip Kiernan, said.. The recent removal of more than two tonnes of rubbish from K’gari Fraser Island beaches following Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth highlighted the need for Clean Up Australia Day on the Fraser Coast, Cr Everard said.

Members and volunteers from Zero Co, a sustainable start-up, Ocean Crusaders, a waterway clean-up crew and local tour guide, K’gari Adventures cleaned up the rubbish which had built up along the coastline. “It’s not just the coastline that is being affected. Litter is building up in many of our favourite parks and outdoor areas,” Cr Everard said. The four-week short course, ‘Life Below Water: Conservation, Current Issues and Possible Solutions’, has been developed by the University of the Sunshine Coast through FutureLearn, a global social learning platform that delivers online study from the world’s leading universities. Throughout the course, USC experts will guide participants as they take a deep dive into learning about earth’s underwater ecosystems. Presenters include Hervey Bay’s Associate Professor Kathy Townsend, who leads global research into sea turtles, manta rays and the impacts of plastic ingestion in marine life, and Dr Christofer Clemente, who specialises in the relationship between form, function and ecology of living and extinct animals. “Across just three hours each week of interactive, self-directed study, anyone anywhere in the world with an internet connection can learn about the form, function and evolution of aquatic animals, with a focus on how they have adapted to survive,” Dr Townsend said. “Participants can develop

NEWSINBRIEF Dog owners urged to pay rego

Fraser Coast dog owners are being urged to ensure they have paid their registration renewal and kept their pet’s details up-to-date. Cr Paul Truscott said Council issued just over 20,000 dog registration renewals late last year and about 2,000 dog owners were yet to respond. “Registration reminder notices were issued to 3,000 dog owners in January and so far, about 2,000 have not contacted Council,” he said. “We urge pet owners who have received a reminder or might have changed address and not received a notice or reminder, to contact Council, especially if you no longer have your pet.” All dogs must be registered, desexed and microchipped unless an approved exemption applies. Dog owners found with an unregistered dog are liable for the $275 fine. “We all lead busy lives and sometimes dog owners forget to update registration details with us when they move or their pet passes on,” Cr Truscott said. “It is important those details are kept up to date with Council and the group which holds your pet’s microchip data. “Registered dogs can be reunited with their owners very quickly if they are found wandering or are taken to the pound. “It is harder to reunite dogs with their owners when they are unregistered or not microchipped, or the information on the microchip is out of date. “And remember, if you have a new dog, registration is free the first time you register your animal in the Fraser Coast region.” Dog registration fees help pay for animal management staff; as well as provide education programs

and facilities such as the two pounds, fenced offleashed areas and free doggy doo bags that are placed in dispensers along the foreshore and puppy playgrounds. “In the last 12 months Council received more than 6,000 animal related requests, including almost 600 complaints about barking dogs and nearly 600 reports of wandering dogs,” Cr Truscott said. Meals on Wheels has received a $20,000 grant from the Government’s Stronger Community Program to purchase new cold room condensers. Meals on Wheels Fraser Coast Community manager Maria Daye said the cold room condensers were reaching the end of their viable life span and needed replacement. “Any outage to these cold rooms would have a major impact on our operational capabilities, and continuity of our operation is imperative to service the community members who rely on Meals on Wheels for the provision of meals,” Ms Daye said. “Many of the frail, disabled and older members of the community rely on Meals on Wheels for the provision of daily meals for their welfare and wellbeing and with this service many of these community members are also able to remain within the security of their own homes.” Meals on Wheels Fraser Community was established in 1968 when 12 meals were

We all hate ‘feeding the bin’ on a Sunday night,” said Steph.

According to the National Food Waste Strategy Feasibility Study, Australians waste around 7.6 million tonnes of food each year, which equals about 312kg per person. That’s the equivalent of approximately one in five bags of groceries going into the bin at a cost of $36.6 billion a year. The water used to grow

that wasted food is around 2600 gigalitres, five times the volume of water in Sydney Harbour. Dan and Steph run restaurant EAT with Dan & Steph. The couple were runners-up in 2020’s MKR Rivals series and in 2021 hosted their own show on Channel 7 “Travel and Eat with Dan & Steph”.

HELPING to reduce landfill while raising funds will be made much easier for the team at the Burrum District Community Men’s Shed thanks to a $2600 Hervey Bay RSL Community Grant. The group are taking part in several recycling programs at their Howard shed and needed three concrete slabs to be laid before erecting some much-needed garden sheds. The sheds will assist with multiple storage and access needs, particularly for the recycling program. “We are celebrating 10 years in the community this year. We have up to 30 men here at any time, enjoying mateship and learning new skills in the process,” said President John Laffin. The primary goal of the organisation is to provide a safe, friendly and healing environment for men who might be experiencing bereavement, social exclusion, depression or suffering from other life changing events. It gives participants a chance to get together with other blokes and tinker with

tools, which often makes them feel like they have a purpose. “We make Possum Boxes, Micro Bat breeding boxes and we take on a lot of minor repair jobs that are just too small for local commercial trades to be bothered with,” Mr Laffin said. “It provides a great service for the community and assists us to stay active, which is vital.” New members are always welcome to join in the fun. KINDY families, educators and older community members that volunteer as part of the intergenerational program at the C&K East St Kindy can all feel safer with the addition of a new external defibrillator at the centre. Thanks to a Rapid Response Grant from the Council, the kindy was able to purchase the potentially life-saving device. Anna Murphy, Co-Director and teacher at C&K East Street Kindy said they were very pleased to have the addition for the health and safety of their community. “For many years we have wanted to have seniors from our local area in the kindy as part of our kindergarten program.” “Last year we participated in the Moving Moments program, an intergenerational playgroup where seniors engaged with the children.” “The program had so many

benefits for all involved, and we want to continue to offer such a program again this year.” Ms Murphy said having the defibrillator meant peace of mind for all visitors to the centre. “We have lots of elderly people coming and visiting, and lots of families that are in all the time, so it's something that we have been thinking about for a while. We feel that having the defibrillator will be an extra measure for our first aid.” The centre is very grateful for the Council grant to purchase the device, which costs over $2200. Councillor David Lee presented the defibrillator to the centre and said the Council is always supportive of initiatives that keep the community safe. “You wouldn’t think there would be many people at risk at a kindergarten for

young children, but like any community group you get people of all ages with chronic conditions attending,” said Cr Lee. Cr Lee applauded the centre for fulfilling a duty of care to the stakeholders and the users of the facility. “We are a community kindergarten run by a committee and rely on our families and the community for donations and resources,” said Ms Murphy. The defibrillator will be located next to their first aid kit in the main room. The kindy is located next to a public park that local residents walk through. Ms Murphy said if the situation ever arose where they need to use the defibrillator on the public in the park, they would be able to help. “Hopefully, we never have to use it on anyone,” said Ms Murphy.

Pipework to temporarily shut Denman Camp Road at Cupania Way

Denmans Camp Road between Boundary Road and Cupania Way in Hervey Bay will be closed for a fortnight as work on a major new eastwest road connection moves to the next stage. This section of road will be closed while water mains and sewer mains are relocated as part of the Boundary Road extension. The Boundary Road and Denmans Camp Road intersection will remain open during these works. It is anticipated that the work will take 14 days, weather permitting, from 25 February to 11 March, with detours via Boundary Road, Tavistock Street and Colyton Street to be sign-posted directing traffic around the

roadworks. Fraser Coast Regional Councillor Denis Chapman said the Boundary Road extension would provide alternative and improved access to the Hervey Bay city centre, major shopping centres, tourist destinations and the medical precinct. “This massive road project - being delivered by local civil construction company SGQ – will provide a significant boost to the local economy, generating employment for 89 people during its construction,” he said. “It will fill in the missing link between Urraween Road and Boundary Road with a 1.9km, four lane, dual carriage way. “With the region’s population forecast to reach 150,000 within 20 years, an improved eastwest connection will cater for growth, reduce traffic congestion and take pressure off Boat Harbour Drive, Hervey Bay’s primary eastwest link.” Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said with the influx of people moving to the region throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the need for reliable transport routes for residents, freight, and local businesses, had increased. “Congestion on Boat Harbour Drive has grown over the years and once the extension of Boundary Road is complete, it will give local residents that important

alternate route ensuring Hervey Bay’s road network is ready for continued growth,” Mr Pitt said. “Some of the key outcomes of the Hinkler Regional Deal are improved liveability for residents and road safety, which this project will provide for Hervey Bay locals. Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister was pleased to see work on the project progressing. “The Palaszczuk Government has contributed over $3 million towards this important project, which is creating jobs and building a better Boundary Road,” Mr Bailey said. “Hervey Bay continues to grow as more people choose to live in Queensland, and it’s road projects like this that will ensure our roads keep up with that growth.” The project also includes new traffic lights at the intersections at Grevillea Street and Denmans Camp Road. Concrete shared pathways will be provided on both sides of Boundary Road with on-road cycle lanes also being included. Total cost is estimated to be about $26.5 million, which also includes design and project management costs, cultural heritage monitoring, service relocations, landscaping and revegetation. The project is being funded by the Australian Government ($7.7 million) as part of the Hinkler Regional Deal

initiative, the Queensland Government through the Transport Infrastructure Development Scheme ($3.1 million) and Fraser Coast Regional Council ($15.7 million). The project started in November 2021 and it is anticipated that works will be completed in June 2023, weather permitting. More details about the project, including a flyover animated video, is

High tides flush more debris onto beaches

The high tides in the past few weeks have flushed more debris out of the Mary River and Burrum River catchments which it is likely to make its way onto Fraser Coast beaches.

Council urges people to remain cautious in and around our beaches as flood debris may contain contaminants. Large logs and other debris are also washing onto Fraser Coast beaches and these can pose a risk to the safety of swimmers and other water users. Beach clean-up activities are continuing and moving around the affected Fraser Coast beaches as tides allow.

PT Sessions to support mental health becomes a walk in the park

HERVEY Bay’s Man Walk group are taking their fitness and mental wellbeing aspirations up a notch to include personal trainer (PT) sessions. The inclusive group of men who walk and talk each week to support each other decided to add in weekly 45-minute outdoor fitness sessions on Seafront Oval to help improve their fitness and mental wellbeing. Shane Bradbury, Hervey Bay Man Walk ‘Manbassador’ said, “There’s a fair bit of research that says the more fit and active you are, and the more you participate in the community, the better your mental wellbeing is as well.” Mr Bradbury wanted to dispel the myth that people in the group have a mental illness, “We’re trying to promote wellbeing and prevent people from suffering.” Since starting the Man Walk group about five months ago, Mr Bradbury said he has had already dropped some kilos, his blood pressure has lowered, and he is generally feeling better. He said he is also enjoying connecting with people in the community that he wouldn’t normally, “It’s been wonderful meeting some great people.” The PT Sessions complement the walks with specialised instruction and motivation from professional personal trainer Michelle Evans from

Ms Evans said she is happy to support the aim of Man Walk as she leads the group through the outdoor training sessions on a Monday evening. She said the sessions are targeted to all fitness abilities, “These training sessions will include a variety of different styles of exercises from cardio to core and strengthening.” “The sessions will help improve overall strength, fitness and reduce stress.” “The benefits from training are endless; they will be leaving feeling energised, have improved sleeping patterns and the feeling of getting fitter - all whilst being outdoors, training in the sea breeze of the

The Man Walk group meet at the Hervey Bay Surf Club in Torquay on Tuesdays at 5.15pm and walk west towards the Beach House Hotel in Scarness, and on Thursdays from 6am they head east to the Urangan Pier. They walk for about an hour and cover around five kilometres with about 20

regular participants. The brisk walk provides an environment that is positive, supportive and inclusive, with no pressure and no barriers to entry; just an opportunity to walk, talk and support each other. “We are a great bunch of blokes who enjoy a laugh and a chat; it’s not too serious, and it’s an awesome way to connect and stay accountable to a fitness and mental health plan.” Mr Bradbury encourages anyone interested in joining either the Man Walk or the PT Sessions to join the Man Walk Hervey Bay Facebook group. Treasure seekers of all abilities unite

PEOPLE with disabilities are about to get a new outdoor activity with a difference. Hervey Bay’s first allabilities metal detecting group is getting set to provide a fun and exciting activity for people interested in exploring the region with like-minded people. Disability support worker Catherine Cooke recently had the idea to start the group after speaking with a disabled man who enjoys metal detecting but thought it could be more fun to turn it into a social outing group. “I thought it seemed like a great idea to get people together and possibly find a bit of treasure!” “I don’t expect to find gold, but we all love the excitement of finding little things.” Ms Cooke said metal detecting is quite mindful and relaxing but would also like to add an element of social inclusion to it. She said it was a COVID safe activity, being outside. “A lot of indoor activities have closed up since COVID, so I started thinking outside the box a little for activities to do as a support worker that would not cost a lot.” Ms Cooke said she would supply a couple of metal detectors to other participants who needed them but hoped people would eventually buy their own.

Ms Cooke said if anyone owns private land suitable for fossicking and are happy for them to use for metal detecting, please get in touch with her. “We will have a bit of fun and learn something new in a nonstressful environment.” The group is suited to people with disabilities with their support carers or anyone interested in joining such a group. Level heads needed The Queensland Government is proposing costly changes to the national building code, but ﬁrst they need to stop and think of the impacts.

The major changes to the national building code relate to Accessible Housing and Energy Eﬃciency, but the Queensland Government is not fully measuring the impact. It’s true that future provisions are needed for the elderly and people with disabilities, and to ensure more sustainable homes into the future, but the beneﬁts won’t be realised if not introduced properly.

Best tennis players coming for Hervey Bay’s Open FRASER Coast tennis players will be able to tap into their Special K and Ash Barty when the Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association hosts a round of the Australia Ranking Points Tournament in March. Thanks to a sponsorship deal between the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association, the association has been able to stage Australian Ranking Points Tournaments for the

past three years. “After the success of Kyrgios and Kokkinakis, dubbed Special K, and Ash Barty at the recent Australian Open we are expecting a big contingent of players and spectators,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. “Their wins on home soil at the Australian Open have sparked a renewed interest in tennis.” The sponsorship deal is part of a Council focus on bringing events, athletes and artists to

the region. “We want to provide opportunities for locals to be involved in the sporting and cultural activities that people in capital cities take for granted,” Cr Seymour said. “Seeing people perform at the elite level provides inspiration to others.” “The events also contribute to the cultural, social and economic development of our region.” Under the sponsorship deal, Council provided

$2,000 in cash and $1,000 in in-kind support to the tennis association to stage three tournaments a year (Open, Seniors and Junior) for three years (2020, 21 and 22). “These events have attracted players, family and supporters from across the state to the Fraser Coast,” Cr Seymour said.

“As a result, the region benefits from the increase in visitors who support our accommodation facilities, cafes and restaurants and other businesses. The region also benefits from the exposure to a wider audience.” Being able to stage events, especially national ranking events, is fantastic,

Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said more than 600 students were in the Bay for the championships. “It is a pleasure to welcome back the event and welcome a new crop of athletes to the region,” said Cr Everard. It was the 10th consecutive year that the championship event had been held in the Bay. The event’s culmination was the naming of the Queensland Schools Triathlon team. “The Fraser Coast is gaining a reputation as a destination to stage major events,” Cr Everard said. Wide Bay was well represented across all of the races over the weekend. Joey Vella was the only Wide Bay athlete to compete in the senior boy’s category. “Finishing eighth in the

race put me in contention for Queensland team selection,” Vella said. Hervey Bay’s Pepe Pavey and Charlie Andersen were pleased with their efforts in their final school’s triathlon event before finishing school at the end of the year. “Having raced with these girls Dylan Smith over the last couple of years, we have seen everyone grow up and to finish your last one with your best mates is all I could have asked for,” Pavey said. Dylan Smith competing in the intermediate race, was up against some boys a year older finished seventh, which was a remarkable effort. Smith had limited training in the lead-up because of injury, but it would not stop him from giving it his all to attempt to

make the team. “I just did my best, and you have to go with what you have got, and I ended up the seventh today,” Smith said. The selected Queensland team athletes will have a distinct advantage and knowledge of the course at the national titles. The championships will be held in Hervey Bay in September.

An eye for detail equates to an unparalleled customer experience WHEN we sat down to interview Geoff Wall for this instalment of Inside WBMG, it wasn’t long before the immortalised quote from one of Australia’s most loved films, ‘The Castle’ came ringing into our heads.

“Oh Steve, could you move the Camira, I need to get the Torana out so I can get to the Commodore. I’ll have to get the keys to the Cortina if I’m gonna move that Camira. Yeah, watch the boat mate.” That pretty much sums up the incredibly complex logistical exercise that faces Geoff and his team at WBMG each day. “I’ve been at WBMG eight years, starting as a pre-delivery fitter,” he started. “I was in Service, then pre-delivery in Maryborough, then went to Hervey Bay to look after the wheel alignment bay, back into Service again as a diagnostic technician and I am now the Pre-Delivery Manager for the Group,” Geoff said. Before then, Geoff built a career for himself with experience as a Lighting and Sound Technician at the Brolga Theatre; prior to that, he was a supervisor at the laminating plant of Hyne Timber; various mechanical stores; and he also ran his own business as a high-end home theatre installer for Stroud Homes, JB HI-FI and The Good Guys. “A typical work week for me now is around 50 hours, which is a distance from the one hundred-hour weeks I was working when I was in business for myself. That is the benefit of working in a highly organised and supportive environment like WBMG. You can get an awful lot done with the breadth of resources here.”

Wide Bay Motor Group’s Pre-Delivery Manager, Geoff Wall “To best explain the pre-delivery process, it involves everything from the time the car arrives at the dealership on a truck to the time it lands in the showroom and everything that happens in between that. “This includes checking the cars for damage in transit, full vehicle inspection, and allocating to what we call sub-lets such as window tinting,” explained Geoff. “Within our own pre-delivery area, we then allocate the vehicle to one of the four fitters we have here to look after our genuine accessories like bull

bars, trays, nudge bars, roof racks and more. “After that is all complete, it goes through an intensive detailing stage and is then sent up to the showroom, which signals our internal handover of the vehicle.” “Some days are busier than others. We would normally look after 14 to 20 new cars a day. Due to supply chain uncertainty around COVID, we have had an abnormal number of cars arrive in a short period of time, in fact, we booked in thirty-eight cars in one day recently.

“I am sure you can appreciate, once a vehicle arrives at the dealership, the customer wants that car in their hands as soon as possible.” Challenges with COVID related production disruptions have become second nature in many businesses across Hervey Bay and the same can certainly be said for WBMG and its pre-delivery hub. The well-publicised shortage of semi-conductors available to the motor manufacturers, together with logistics disruptions such as a trucking industry ravaged by COVID and heightened Australian

biosecurity enforcement have all had an impact. Thousands of cars were being held on boats at one stage, just floating on the ocean. “The team has done an absolutely amazing job to handle not only the dealership growth in terms of marketshare but also the bumps in the road that have come with the uncertain times. “In my immediate pre-delivery team I have four fitters, four detailers, and what we call a floater, which is my 2IC. Each has a very strong work ethic and an unwavering eye for detail.” "That is the most important thing. Each member is very particular in their own way. It’s a small shed and a lot of guys moving about at the one time, rotating up to sixty cars a day. It’s a lot of moving parts.” “With all of that said, there is an enormous feeling of team culture here at WBMG that starts at the top. “Everyone feels like they are on the same page and the level of comradery is felt across the whole business. That’s really vital for us to be as successful as we are.” Geoff’s passion for vehicles goes well beyond his day job, having owned over one hundred vehicles, many of which he built from the ground up, including the fabrication of his own parts. He has a history in drag and motor racing, with the odd bad bingle, that we didn’t delve too far into. However, it is fair to say that his technical and mechanical skills are second to none. Outside of work, Geoff prides himself on setting an example for his young family and ensures the values that he finds in important in life are passed on.
