FRASER Coast Mates, proudly announced on R U OK Day a partnership with Mental Awareness Foundation to bring Australia and New Zealand’s biggest mental health walk to Hervey Bay. Walk For Awareness Day, Sunday 10 October, is recognised for bringing people together in a friendly environment where mental health issues can be discussed openly with friends, family, and supportive strangers. It’s based on the belief that matters surrounding suicide should be talked about, not shut away. The annual event draws thousands of walkers every year to celebrate the beginning of Queensland Mental Health Week. Fraser Coast Mates are delighted to partner with the significant event and will livestream the Brisbane event on the big screen at Seafront Oval as part of the occasion. President of Fraser Coast Mates, Darren Bosley, said, “Fraser Coast will be one of the first regional locations to have joined this wonderful event and we need our region to participate, showing how strongly we support mental health initiatives.” Former NRL player and Fraser Coast Mate Darren Senter said they hoped this would be the springboard for regular monthly group walks, similar to the popularity of parkrun. Fraser Coast Mate Tracey Messer said, “The event is not

Fraser Coast Mates - Tracey Messer Darren Senter & Darren Bosley only for men or women, but for the whole community to join.” “The biggest point about this is to get the community together and let them know that we are all here for each other, and we want to encourage them to talk to each other,” said Ms Messer. Ms Messer said they wanted to try and prevent youth suicide by creating these walks as a possible preventative measure. “Young people maybe experiencing things they don’t know how to deal with. As the older generation, I feel we have a responsibility to pass on what we know.” The walk was chosen as it’s a low impact exercise proven to improve mental wellbeing. Mr Bosley said, “Everybody has a story, but on the surface, nobody sees it. So as a public, we have got to stop being judgmental and consider what everyone is going through.” Ms Messer used the analogy of carrying a large ball of cheese to describe our troubles; it is too hard to get through as

one little mouse but shared as a group we can get through it together and lighten the load. Mr Senter added, “You’re not a burden; we’re here because we want to listen and connect.” “Sadly, the average daily number of suicides in Australia has increased from 8 to 9 since the start of COVID-19,” said Mr Bosley. This year the walk will be nine kilometres to highlight the number that needs to reduce. The event will feature a range of local mental health service stalls set up on the oval for people to approach and connect with easily. Participants are encouraged to join either the whole nine or a shorter five-kilometre walk or just as long as they feel benefits them. Walk for Awareness will start and finish at Seafront Oval in Pialba on Sunday 10 October, starting at 8am. Registration for the event is $35 and includes a t-shirt. Torquay renovations bring fresh vibe LOUNGE and gaming are taken to a new level at the Torquay Hotel with the completion of its muchanticipated stage one renovations. Publican Darren Carter said he was happy to offer the new and vibrant spaces for the community to enjoy and encouraged people to come and check out the renovations. The renovation, completed by Dean Stringer Carpentry, includes a complete rebuild and extension of the gaming room and a new lounge bar. “There’s more room in the gaming room than the old one so people can have more space to social distance with the machines spread out a bit more.” Mr Carter said they had planned to do the upgrades for a while but were delayed from starting due to COVID. The renovations started in February and went smoothly apart from the budget blowing out to over one million dollars, said Mr Carter. The hotel was impacted by COVID but decided to keep all its staff on during the challenging period as Mr Carter has a strong family focus and wanted to support

thankful of the patrons with their patience and support they have shown us while being half shut; they still came down in droves, and we really appreciate that.” Situated on the Esplanade overlooking the markets and beach, the prime beer garden and public bar will receive a makeover in the new year. There are no plans for the

second level of the building at this stage. In February 2022 Mr Carter will celebrate running the family-owned and operated independent hotel for 20 years. He hopes it will continue to be a local family favourite institution in the Hervey Bay community for many more years to come.

FOR THE first time, an international campaign to raise awareness of the impacts of blood cancer on the lives of people across the globe will be held throughout Blood Cancer Awareness Month, this September. The movement will see public monuments around Australia and worldwide glow red when the Leukaemia Foundation joins forces with international counterparts to fuel the global fight against blood cancer while incidence and mortality rates continue to climb worldwide. Here in Hervey Bay a ‘Light the Night’ event will be held on Saturday 16 October from 5.30pm at the Scarness Jetty for those who have experienced blood cancer. Hervey Bay’s Leukemia Foundation founding member, Elaine Gamer, said the public

Leukemia Foundation’s Elaine Gamer and Fay Frame prepare for the annual Light the Night event are welcome to join the symbolic lantern ceremony. “The lighting of lanterns symbolises the hope for a future free of blood cancer and the support of a community that understands the darkness blood cancer brings to our lives.” Ms Gamer said the event would be led by a bag piper playing Amazing Grace as he leads the participants down the jetty and back. After the ceremony, the group will have a meal together at the Beach House Hotel. Ms Gamer said anyone interested in raising awareness of blood cancer or supporting the organisation is welcome to attend. Participants are encouraged to bring their lantern but can request one if needed by calling Elaine Gamer before the event. Phone 0409 637 207. People carry lanterns of different colours to represent

their position, “Supporters of the organisation carry a blue lantern; people that are patients carry a white lantern and people that have lost someone carry a gold lantern.” Ms Gamer was instrumental in establishing the Leukemia Foundation in Mount Isa, the Sunshine Coast and then in Hervey Bay ten years ago. Her experience of losing her teenage daughter to Leukemia over a long ten-month battle gave this determined woman a mission to improve the lives of people going through the same illness. Her daughter stayed alive to attend her Year 12 formal in 1979 and passed away a couple of days later. “Just before she passed away, she opened her eyes and she said, ‘Mum, remember when all this is over to help Leukemia patients’, so she gave me a job and I have been doing that ever since,” said Ms Gamer. Ms Gamer told the Advertiser

there wasn’t a lot of support back then for families going through blood cancer. Since then, with thanks to Ms Gamer’s dedication and effort over the best part of four decades, the Leukemia Foundation can provide free accommodation and emergency support for families going through the experience. This is just one example of the many positive outcomes Ms Gamer has been involved with through the Leukemia Foundation. Ms Gamer was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 2018 for her service to community health. Blood Cancer Awareness Month, now in its 11th year, is an international initiative contributing to a global movement putting blood cancer on the map, helping to build awareness and understanding of every type of blood cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.

Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari A FOUR-year $52.2 billion infrastructure pipeline, including 53 projects across the Wide Bay and Burnett, to stimulate job creation and further grow our economy is underway by the Government. Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said the Queensland Government Infrastructure Pipeline (QGIP) included projects in transport, renewable energy, health, education, and water security. “The Government’s infrastructure pipeline includes upgrades to Hervey Bay Nursing and Allied Health facility and a new water police facility.” Member for Maryborough Bruce Saunders said the pipeline, was a key part of the region’s Economic Recovery Plan. “Thanks to our strong health response, we’re in the best possible position to create more jobs in Maryborough and across the Wide Bay,” Mr Saunders said. “The population in Wide Bay and Burnett is expected to

grow by 15 per cent to 347,827 by 2036. “Queensland’s new infrastructure pipeline includes over 50 projects to meet the needs of our growing region. “This includes projects like a new Queensland fire and emergency services complex in Maryborough, supporting construction jobs and improving services.” Deputy Premier and Infrastructure Minister Steven Miles said the pipeline includes more than 1000 projects in delivery and planning across Queensland. “In 2021-22, $14.7 billion is being invested, with more than 60 per cent being spent outside Greater Brisbane,” Mr Miles said. “Last financial year, we delivered 93 per cent of our capital program budget. “In dollar terms, this is one of the best performances over the last decade and a notable achievement given the disruption caused by COVID-19.” Mr Miles said QGIP brings

together the current capital program and adds a planning pipeline that details proposals that are in the planning stage and still subject to further consideration. “Providing early visibility of potential future infrastructure projects, in addition to the delivery pipeline of funding increases industry confidence in Queensland as a place to invest,” he said. “We are leveraging more investment in Queensland and driving jobs growth as part of our economic recovery.” The draft strategy sets out the Queensland Government’s approach to connecting regions and creating liveable communities with essential services and infrastructure. Queenslanders are encouraged to have their say on the draft 20-year State Infrastructure Strategy (SIS) now open for consultation. Young Greenies rewarded SANDY Strait State School has been rewarded for sustainability by Coles with a schoolyard ‘buddy bench’ made from 98% recycled plastic. Boozy hobby becomes serious new business WHAT’S the next step to appreciating your favourite drink? Make and sell it yourself of course! This was the thinking behind Engineer Kane Macready’s new hobby turned business venture as he launches Spirit Collective this month, making and selling rum and gin. The idea came during the COVID lockdown last year as Mr Macready enjoyed a quiet rum and wondered what it would be like to make his own. He was encouraged by the new artisan producer liquor licence announced earlier this year and took action. He’s one of four in the Wide Bay who have applied for this new licence with about 100 craft brewers and artisan distillers from across Queensland who have applied for Queensland’s first new liquor licence in eight years. Spirit Collective will launch it’s first gin this month, aptly called Gin Number One – Origin. Mr Macready said gin was fast to make, but rum took two years to age. He described Gin Number One as sweet, cool and refreshing with predominate notes of cinnamon and cloves, “It's traditionally a spicier gin than others on the market, and it seems it seems to me that people like this one.” He said there were 14

was not planning to quit his career. Mr Macready said he was looking forward to making small batches for people to try, tweak and then make available to the public. “I can tailor-make things through trial and error to see if it it tastes good.” He plans to supply a few restaurants locally and hopes to sell at markets and events such as Food n Groove.

The new liquor licence requires him to produce at least 400 litres a year, which he admits could be challenging. He can produce no more than 2500 litres a year under the licence. Mr Macready said the business was called Spirit Collective as he was hoping to include other artisan distillers under the label once they arranged their own licence. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman said, “There is a buzz growing around Queensland’s boutique alcohol scene – giving locals and tourists alike the chance to sample quality craft beer or spirits in some of the state’s most popular drinking spots, as well as some unique locations in rural and regional Queensland.” “With the licence also comes the added opportunity to sell craft beers or spirits from other artisanal producers, as well as Queensland wines.” “We want to support our craft brewers and distillers to continue to grow their business and create more jobs for Queenslanders as we continue our plan for economic recovery.” Spirit Collective has a Facebook page. Community grant keeps gymnastics jumping for joy

The Wide Bay Gymnastics Club recently received a $10,000 community grant from The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program, to host gymnastics classes in primary schools around the Fraser Coast. Most specifically, the gymnastics club is using the funds to offer primary school students the chance to learn gymnastics for free either at the club or at school, if they have the equipment. Wide Bay Gymnastics Club President Justin Baker explained the full scope of the support and how wide it was able to reach. “The grant was able to allow us to engage with six or seven local schools and over time, we hope to increase that to ten. These are primary school kids, principally in the Prep to Year three group” “It’s 100% free for kids to take part in and for schools to get involved with. It is an amazing springboard for kids to engage with the sport. We have around 300 members of The Wide Bay Gymnastics Club and a lot of people are not certain

how to get involved or where to start’. The club has been running in the region for 30 years and moved to its current premises in Walkers Road, Urangan in 1996. Prior to this, the club operated out of the old Great Hall in Pialba with only limited classes on offer. With the opening of its own purposebuilt centre, the support of volunteers and guidance of master coach Heinrich Gogoll, the club developed a program that now caters for people of all abilities and ages. “Gymnastics is fun, develops strength, flexibility, coordination, listening skills, selfesteem and confidence, social interaction, encourages goal setting and is great for general fitness” Justin said. The Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants program is part of the RSL’s ongoing commitment to the local community. The program is designed to provide financial, in-kind and fundraising opportunities to local not for profit organisations struggling to gain support.

Meet Ian Moore, 82, Hervey Bay’s oldest taxi driver. Mr Moore has been a taxi driver for 63 years, 22 of those in Hervey Bay, with no plans to slow down any time soon. “I heard a report a while ago that the oldest taxi driver in Australia was 105 years old so I’m going to try and beat that.” The oldest taxi driver in Queensland retired last year at age 90 in Mackay; Mr Moore thinks he will easily beat that. “I have no illnesses at all, nothing,” said the clear spoken driver. Mr Moore believes the secret to living a long and healthy life is to keep working and be active, “I grew up on rural farm and worked from daylight until dark and always worked hard.” “Most of the people I grew up with who retired at 65 are all gone; the body is not used to doing nothing. USC Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Helen Bartlett said the one-year diplomas, with applications now open, would offer choice and flexibility for those wanting to take the initial step towards gaining tertiary qualifications to achieve their career goals and enhance their job prospects. “This suite of undergraduate diplomas aligns with workforce demand and regional priorities and reflects USC’s commitment to offer the

very best higher education opportunities for our Fraser Coast community,” Professor Bartlett said. Online diplomas in Education (Early Childhood), Education (Primary) and Business will be also available to Fraser Coast students in 2022. Each diploma comprises eight undergraduate subjects, and students who successfully complete them can choose to exit with a standalone qualification or apply for up to a year’s credit towards a USC undergraduate degree. “As well as having the option to gain university-level knowledge and foundational skills to help secure employment in their desired fields, the diplomas will also help students realise their own

strengths and capabilities for further higher education,” Professor Bartlett said. “For those who decide to continue their academic journeys, and who meet the necessary requirements, there is a smooth pathway to advance towards gaining a degree.” Applications are also open to study degrees in Nursing Science, Primary Education and Social Work and enrol in the university’s bridging program Tertiary Preparation Pathway at USC Fraser Coast in 2022. WATER parks have reopened for another summer of family fun! WetSide Water Park on the Hervey Bay Esplanade at Pialba was closed during the colder months while Maryborough’s new SplashSide was closed for maintenance for four weeks. “WetSide is a fantastic place to keep cool and have fun with something for everyone. There are water slides, a water play arena, TotSide for under 5s play and a Fountain Light Show on Saturday nights that is a sight to behold,” said Deputy Mayor Darren Everard. “WetSide has proven a very popular attraction taking out multiple awards through TripAdvisor and it was recently voted number one in the Wotif Top 10 Amusement Parks and Water Parks in Australia.” WetSide opens seven days a week from 10am to 5pm

during Queensland school holidays. During school terms, the facility is open from 10am to 5pm Wednesday to Sunday (closed Monday and Tuesday). The popular light show at WetSide, in which the fountains in the main arena are illuminated with coloured lights and music, operate from 7pm every Saturday. Maryborough’s SplashSide water playground in ANZAC Park was closed while new anti-slip and antigraffiti coating was applied throughout the facility. “SplashSide is a fabulous facility for families that includes a range of interactive water features, all-inclusive play equipment as well as shelters, barbecues and new toilets,” Councillor Daniel Sanderson said. “While we’ve received a lot of positive feedback about SplashSide, we also had concerns raised about the

slippery surface, which is why we commissioned an independent company to do slip tests. “This testing found that some areas of SplashSide were more slip resistant than others, which meant that new layers of grit and anti-graffiti coating needed to be applied. He said after the work was completed, additional testing was carried out earlier this month with positive results, enabling SplashSide to re-open in time for the school holidays. SplashSide opens seven days a week from 7.30am to 7pm during the warmer months, except Thursdays. It is closed every Thursday morning for maintenance and inspections, re-opening at 1pm. Entry to both WetSide and SplashSide is a free, however there is a cost of $6.70 for 10 rides on the waterslides at WetSide with ticket sales closing at 4.30pm daily.

A WHEELCHAIR scooter heading up the highway is not something you see everyday. Last week you may have witnessed Bevan Kearsley riding into Hervey Bay on his contraption as he endeavours to travel the length and breadth of Queensland with a mission to raise awareness and funds for spinal research. Mr Kearsley, from Greenslopes in Brisbane plans to do the journey over 23 days. Almost 30 years ago, the qualified ‘chippy’ was involved in a motorbike accident. In seconds his life changed forever and he was left living with paraplegia, permanently using a wheelchair. Thrown many challenges in life, Mr Kearsely has always bounced back and put others first. Despite his accident, his love of motorbikes has never waned. One day over a few drinks with family he came up with the idea of jumping on a 150cc wheelchair scooter and hitting the road. With an aim to help others, Mr Kearsley will be raising money for spinal research through the not-for-profit Miller Chase Foundation. “After retiring I was looking for something to do. I wanted to raise funds for a good cause and a cause I could relate to. I’ve had the wheelchair scooter for a few years now and it was just there gathering dust. One day I ripped the

The keen motocyclist will also be helping to map Queensland for other people living with a disability. Using Spinal Life Australia’s free online resource, Accessible Australia, Mr Kearsley will leave reviews and upload

photos, which helps others to plan ahead before travelling and find accessible places and experiences. “My aim is to give people with disability the confidence to explore more of Australia and to influence more businesses to consider people with disability as customers.”. Eager to continue his travels next year around the rest of Australia when border restrictions hopefully relax, Mr Kearsely’s goal is to raise $100,000 for spinal research. Wildlife Queensland Fraser Coast members discover natural wonders and history on their bushwalks HERVEY Bay has many beautiful parks dotted throughout and along the Esplanade as a group of local bushwalkers are discovering each month. Wildlife Queensland Fraser Coast Branch members recently explored Paraweena Park in Point Vernon and discovered a park full of natural wonders and history. The group was joined by local park activist Peter Duck, who explained the significance of several plants and some of the park's history. Mr Duck explained the Council’s Draft Management Plan devised in 2005 and about the park care work by Friends of Parraweena Park, a Council Community Environmental Program. The park adjoins a property that was once a bird sanctuary owned by the Cook family. Parraweena meaning ‘parrot’s nesting place’, was the name given by the Cook family when they established the park between 1950s and 1980s. The

family were instrumental in preserving and enhancing this public land. In those decades, Australia was becoming more aware of land clearing, so Council reduced mowing over the decades, thus allowing natural regrowth. In addition, the Cooks undertook various replanting projects. Not only has Parraweena Park matured but other parks in Hervey Bay and Maryborough have too, leading to their greater use and public appreciation. One of the walkers, Frank Ekin enjoyed the experience of learning about the region, “When we first visited Hervey Bay in 1976, we were thrilled by the wonderful camping grounds by the foreshore; the remnant vegetation of trees and the Rainbow Lorikeets all added to our memorable visit. “Little did we imagine that we would settle in this region, and little did we imagine the struggles that would ensue to preserve small areas of

the natural environment that makes Hervey Bay unique.” Mr Ekin said some of the intriguing natual marvels in the park were explained, such as Melaleuca dealbata, a threatened species, slow-growing with little regeneration. Other plants and their environmental benefits highlighted during the talk included the Tuckeroo, Burny Vine, Forest Grape,Hoop Pine, and the Kurrajong. A few examples of classic Queensland trees, Ironbark, Bloodwood, Blue Gum, Moreton Bay Ash and Rock Fig thrive there also. “It is an enormous credit to local residents at Point Vernon, who combined with the Friends of Parraweena, that the park survives and thrives.” “Parraweena Park shows how remnant native vegetation and development can coexist, though it does require local volunteer effort,” said Mr Ekin.

CRIME & PUNISHMENT Utilitarianism & Retribution

What is the purpose of punishment? Preventing Harm? Rehabilitating offenders? Or giving offenders their “just desserts”? Restorative justice is focused on the impacts of crime on the community and finding a way to contribute to fixing the wrongdoing. Sometimes this might be in the way of a payment of restitution, or it may be something like victim/offender mediation – where the parties can get together in a safe space to discuss the impacts of the offending so that the offender can gain some insight into their actions and consequences. Section 194 of the Penalties and Sentencing Act 1992 (the Act) gives power to the Court to make an order for restitution. Rehabilitative justice looks to identify and address the causes of the offending and change the patterns of behaviour that have contributed to the offending. This may often be undertaking a drug diversion program or be integrated into sentencing such as parole conditions. Section 9(b) of the Act gives power to the Court to provide conditions in the court’s order that the court considers will help the offender be rehabilitated. Retribution is the oldest theory of punishment based

on concepts of vengeance and responsibility – “An eye for an eye”. This is generally the theory of punishment that society ‘expects’ as an outcome when they are wronged. However, the issue with retribution is, what is just and fair with consideration to all the circumstances? The Legislation sets out the maximum penalties for each type of offence against the State and Commonwealth. However, there is a wide spectrum of penalties that can be imposed depending on the individual circumstances and what is hoping to be achieved by imposing the penalty. Without knowing those individual circumstances, it is easy to sit back from our armchairs and say, ‘that sentence wasn’t harsh enough’. However, unless you know the reasons for the sentence, or the purpose in which the sentence was given, then it is a little hard to judge. This is why Magistrates and Judges are appointed – to consider all the elements and determine what is appropriate to achieve general and specific deterrence. The next City of Love, in the Bay? HAVE you seen the padlocks adorning the Scarness Jetty and wondered why they were there? The Advertiser was curious and put a call out to the community through Facebook asking if these padlocks symbolised the unbroken love people have for someone, like the famous love locks in Paris or other cities around the world. The responses from the Hervey Bay community may surprise you. Firstly, what is a love lock? A love lock is a padlock couples place on a bridge, fence, statue, or installation to commemorate their indestructible bond. The padlocks are often engraved with the couple’s name and the date, and its key is thrown away (maybe into the water underneath) to symbolise unbreakable love. The love lock tradition supposedly dates back to a Serbian World War One romance tale. In recent years, its popularity could be attributed to the 2006 bestselling Italian novel-turnedfilm, Ho Voglia di Te (“I Want You”) by Federico Moccia. In the book, a couple affixes a love lock to Rome’s Ponte Milvio bridge to declare their love unbreakable. Since then, enamoured sweethearts have been doing the same around the world. The most famous love locks bridge, Pont des Arts in Paris draws in lovers far and wide. Its sheer popularity and

thousands of locks was blamed for the collapse of part of the bridge in 2014. They were all removed in 2015, resulting in a ban on locks being placed altogether. A lot of authorities treat it as vandalism and remove them. However, some authorities embrace them, and use them as fundraising projects or tourist attractions. Regardless of the background behind the tradition, people continue to

want to express their love, and Scarness Jetty appears Sharon Sullivan’s love lock to be an attractive location for this expression.

ANARRA to the Rescue

To educate more people about rescuing and caring for native wildlife, ANARRA (Australian Native Animals Rescue and Rehabilitation Association) is hosting two workshops in Maryborough on Saturday 25 September. Orientation workshop starts at 10 am, followed by Primary Care of Wildlife workshop. ANARRA is a non-profit

community organisation with a base on a 100-acre property at Glastonbury Paula and David Rowlands have established a purposebuilt facility with suitable enclosures for the care and rehabilitation of native wildlife; kangaroos, wallabies, possums, gliders, birds, koalas, echidnas, flying foxes and reptiles. ANARRA members are trained to rescue and care for native wildlife and to assess an animal to determine the most appropriate action once it’s rescued. Paula is the group’s mentor, having over 30 years of experience as a wildlife rescuer and carer. Since the beginning of August, Paula has received 25 kangaroo and wallaby joeys due to their mothers’ being hit by a car. Numerous birds, koalas, possums and gliders have also been rescued – most have survived, but some were not so lucky. Each workshop costs $10 for the public or free for ANARRA members. THE ANNUAL Fraser Coast Joey’s Mini World Cup returns to Hervey Bay from Sunday 26 September to Friday 1 October. The week long football tournament will showcase over 60 teams from across the country demonstrating exceptional skill and competing for glory at the Nikenbah Sports Precinct. Once again there will be three scholarships up for grabs for those selected who demonstrate tournament sportsmanship and show potential to be a future representative player. The scholarships include an all-expenses paid football tour to play and be coached in Germany. Due to the current climate, the scholarships will roll

over into 2023 if travel is unavailable in 2022. In addition, 42 players from across all categories, will be selected to receive $1000 and the opportunity to join the 2022 Joeys All Star team to travel to Germany to play football and be coached. Five of the teams’ coaches will also be selected to join the trip and will receive a $1500 subsidy to join. After postponing the event in 2020, event organisers, participants and locals alike are excited to see the event go ahead in 2021. “Originally 112 teams were booked for the 2021 Joey’s Mini World Cup and unfortunately this number has decreased due to COVID-19 restrictions and effects it has

had on football clubs. It was a great shame to lose our overseas teams, Germany and New Zealand, and the majority of our NSW teams. However, these teams have all put up their hands to join us in 2022,” said event organiser Heinrich Haussler. Urraween Road - West of Hospital Tour de Bay riders set off on the 100km Centurion bike ride CYCLING: The tenth annual Tour de Bay charity cycle ride was held last weekend. Over 150 riders from around the Wide Bay region took part in several distances. In perfect spring morning conditions, the riders started and finished at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre. The centurion – a 100-kilometre ride began with The Biking Bruiser – a 50-kilometre ride followed half an hour later. The Scenic Cycle – a 25-kilometre ride began before the Walk, Ride and Scoot – a 5-kilometre event got underway. The Hervey Bay Neighbour Hood Centre runs the event, and Chief Executive Officer Tanya Stevenson and staff were on hand to support the participants on their rides and runs. “This event raises money for youth mentoring, and it

doesn’t receive any funding from the government, so it is all down to locals delivering and participating in assisting in raising funds.” The ride will raise approximately $15,000.

Special watering times on the Fraser Coast that were introduced to allow gardens to be watered earlier in the

afternoon will end on 30 September. Mayor George Seymour said level two water restrictions took effect on the Fraser Coast in March, which meant the use of sprinklers and irrigations systems was only permitted three nights a week and limited the hours during which gardens could be watered with a hand-held hose. “The Fraser Coast has not had enough rainfall over the

past 16 months in our dam catchment, with level two water restrictions introduced to help reduce water consumption,” he said. “Council received requests from the community, particularly elderly residents, to reconsider the times for when hand held hoses were permitted as it gets dark earlier during winter. “We listened to that feedback and allowed hand held hoses with a water efficient nozzle to be used between 4pm and 8am the next day instead of between 6pm and 8am the next day. “Those special watering times are coming to an end on 30 September 2021, with watering gardens with hand held hoses to again only be permitted between 6pm and 8am the next day. “We encourage Fraser Coast residents to continue to watch their water use, particularly outdoors, to help delay the need for even tougher water restrictions. “It might be mulching your garden, using a swimming pool cover or checking regularly for water leaks – every little bit helps and every drop counts. By being water-wise, you not only save water, you also save money on your water bill.” More information about Fraser Coast’s current level two water restrictions is available at www. frasercoast.qld.gov.au/waterrestrictions

Level Two water restrictions currently in place include: • Hand held hoses are permitted between 4pm and 8am the next day but must have a water efficient trigger nozzle (changing back to between 6pm and 8am from 30 September 2021); • Irrigation systems (sprinklers, drippers, soaker hoses) are permitted on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays between 6pm and 8am the next day; • Washing windows and cleaning paved or concrete surfaces, external walls or public facilities is permitted at any time but only with a water efficient, high pressure device (eg gerni); • Boat motor and trailer flushing is permitted at any time for a maximum of five minutes at a low water flow; • Filling of swimming pools, spas and water features is only permitted between 6pm and 8am and must be monitored at all times; • Vehicle and boat cleaning is permitted at an time with handheld hoses (fitted with a water efficient trigger nozzle) and • Water tanks connected to or topped up by drinking water supply are subject to the current water restrictions.
