FRASER Coast employers and job seekers will be able to use a free on-line job matching platform tailored to the local job market with the launch of the Fraser Coast Jobs Hub. “While the Fraser Coast has one of the highest unemployment rates in the State, feedback from the business community indicates many are planning to offer new jobs in the near future,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. “The new Fraser Coast Jobs Hub, launched by Council, will be one of the tools local businesses and local job seekers can use to match jobs and applicants. “We believe that by offering a free option for business to advertise, more vacancies will be advertised leading to more employment in the region.” More than 100 organisations including Councils and state governments across Australia, are using the platform and posting good results. “We see some of the main benefits as improved connection between job-seekers and employers,” Cr Seymour said. “It will open the range of jobs available; jobs that would not have previously been advertised because of advertising costs. “Community organisations and jobs network providers will be able to use the platform to help job seekers to source jobs that match their skill sets, while students will be able to lodge their CVs to find local

Council is partnering with the Australian Government through the Hinkler Regional Deal to breathe new life and opportunities into the Hervey Bay City Centre, Cr David Lee said. “The revitalisation of the Hervey Bay City Centre will transform it into a primary destination, a popular destination, a cultural and creative precinct, with diverse food, dining, social and shopping experiences on offer,” he said. “The plan has been developed with community input from two rounds of consultation which has helped us understand and refine how, together, we can create a more
vibrant, green, and inclusive city centre. “The community feedback, coupled with learnings from previous master plans, has led to the development of a Master Plan which will act as a catalyst for change. The plan offers a picture of what the future looks like, but more importantly, how we get there. “A revitalised City Centre will ensure Hervey Bay has a flourishing local economy and can compete at a state and national level for new business and industry, tourism expenditure and skilled workers. “The plan sets out how we can celebrate the best of our region, our city and our community, while embracing our natural coastal advantages and relaxed outdoor lifestyle. “It sets the vision for developers and Council to

Summit to headline Small Business Month
SMALL business marketing expert Tim Reid will headline the Small Business Month activities on the Fraser Coast. The events include the Fraser Coast Business Summit to be held on April 22 at the Beach House while four free online forums will be held in May (Small Business Month). The events have been organised by the Fraser Coast Regional Council in conjunction with Regional Development Australia Wide Bay Burnett. “Small business is the backbone of our economy,” Councillor Darren Everard said. “They are doing it tough with COVID, floods and supply shortages. “These events are part of our effort to help small businesses regain their feet, as well as offering a chance to network with other Fraser Coast businesses.” Small business marketing guru and podcaster Tim Reid will be the guest speaker at the Fraser Coast Business Summit to be held on Friday, April 22 at the Beach House Hotel. More than 270 people attended the Business Summit last year to hear from David Koch, Cr Everard said. ‘Timbo’ Reid hosts Australia’s number 1 Marketing podcast- Small Business Big Marketing Show. The podcast has been

LifeFlight gets a critical care doctor
A CRITICAL care doctor will now be based at the RACQ LifeFlight Rescue base seven days a week to boost the service’s capacity to transport critically ill patients thanks to a $1.1 million investment over three years from the Federal Government. From car accidents to heart attacks to premature births, RACQ LifeFlight Rescue exists to save lives and serve the community by providing rapid response aeromedical care - at no direct cost to the patient. Fraser Coast is the highest user of LifeFlight’s service in Queensland; it carried out 271 missions in 2020. LifeFlight Chief Medical Officer Dr Allan MacKillop said the Critical Care doctor will work with an existing QAS Flight paramedic to complement each other’s skillsets. “The addition of a Critical Care doctor to Bundaberg is a natural progression for the base and will further enhance our already exceptional aeromedical service to the region,” Dr MacKillop said. “We are very grateful for the funding commitment from the Morrison Joyce Federal Government. “This would not have been possible without the support and donations from the community - particularly from Ron and Fay Simpson, who were instrumental in kicking off the project.” Federal Regional Health Minister Dr David Gillespie said the Bundaberg based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue service is the only emergency helicopter-based service
Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt and Federal Regional Health Minister Dr David Gillespie in the region and provides aeromedical transfer services for regional and remote communities. “It was great to meet the LifeFlight team during my recent visit to the Bundaberg LifeFlight facility,” Dr Gillespie said. “I heard loud and clear that having a critical care doctor available seven days a week at the Bundaberg base will substantially boost Bundaberg RACQ LifeFlight Rescue’s capacity to provide support to critically ill patients in the region, and it will complement the Royal Flying Doctors Service - also based in Bundaberg. “Every person in Queensland
should have equal access to free emergency aeromedical care, and that’s what this funding helps provide for rural and remote communities.” Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said he was proud to deliver the funding that he had been campaigning for. “I know the local community has been working hard to get a doctor on board the chopper and it just reinforces that we live in a region filled with people wanting to give back to the community.” Mr Pitt said Bundaberg Base’s aeromedical footprint covers 34 different locations in Queensland, from Hervey Bay, Kingaroy, Gladstone, Barcaldine and beyond.

Walk the Talk Shell’s Way in purple THE SECOND annual Walk the Walk Shell’s Way on Saturday 7 May will mark the start of this year’s Domestic and Family Violence (DVF) prevention month. The event aims to raise community awareness of DVF and to send a clear message that violence in families and homes will not be tolerated. A five-kilometre ‘United Against Violence’ walk or run around Seafront Oval will be included as part of the experience. Keona Ellis, one of the event organisers said, “We encourage you to walk the talk; to put your words into action and show that you mean what you say by actively doing it yourself.” Walk the Talk is in honour of Shelly Howden, who spent many years of her life advocating for domestic and family violence prevention within the Hervey Bay community said Ms Ellis. Michelle Howden, better known as Shelly, passed away in 2020 aged just 44. She was a senior project officer with the Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and is remembered as someone who worked for the betterment of indigenous people and for advocating for DVF prevention. “We're trying to continue her legacy and walk in her footprints and, and really keep her spirit alive in the community,” said Ms Ellis.
As an Aboriginal woman herself, Ms Ellis said she understood the importance of honouring those that have passed. “When our ancestors pass away, we must honour them by showing people the impact of not having them around.”
Other features of the event include informative stalls on the services available for DVF victims in our community, live entertainment, a smoking ceremony, jumping castles, free sausage sizzle, traditional dancing, and face painting. The Walk the Talk team have

The Hearts of Purple smartwatches are proven to give high-risk domestic abuse victims the urgent help they need. “Across Australia, police are called to attend domestic violence incidents on average once every two minutes.” Local data shows at least one DVO is breached every single day of the year. The violence can be physical, emotional or coercive such as cutting finance, monitoring movements, or isolating the victim from friends and family. New technology such as these smartwatches is making a difference. Hearts of Purple ultrasmartwatches can stream live video at the touch of a button to Hearts of Purple monitors who record it and send it to the police for help. There are other buttons on the watch to alert the team, check in or declare an emergency with fall detection signalling a piercing siren. “Join us to celebrate and honour Aunty Shell’s advocacy and put your best foot forward in the battle to eradicate Domestic and Family Violence in our community.” Walk the Talk Shell’s Way will be on Saturday 7 May from 10am on Seafront Oval. Preparing for the Easter Bunny
As you may remember from my article last year, Rabbits in Queensland are outlaws! Queensland is the only state to keep an area free of rabbits by maintaining a rabbit-proof fence and controlling rabbit populations in the area. Department of Agriculture and Fisheries advise that Rabbits are Australia’s most destructive agricultural and environmental introduced animal pest, costing up to $1 billion annually. This is governed by Queensland’s Biosecurity Act. The Easter Bunny may be even more sinister than that. He sneaks into your house in the middle of the night, while you are asleep (s421 Criminal Code -Entering Premises) and leaves a trail of footprints (s469 Criminal Code - Wilful damage), and leaves a Calling Card of little chocolate eggs to let you know he has been there (sounds like the makings of a bad horror film really). The Easter Bunny (much like Santa) may have some defences available to him being; entering the premises was consented to (albeit by the children of the house); the trail of
footprints was not intentional; and the easter eggs are a gift rather than a calling card. There is no defence for breach of Biosecurity laws. It is predicted that the Easter Bunny will spend approximately $1.5 billion on food and chocolate in preparation for his activities over the weekend. This may make up for his behaviour as well as that of his wild counterparts’ destruction of the environment. Hopefully this year the Easter Bunny applied for his Biosecurity permit so that he can enter the State of Queensland Lawfully and visit the many tourists we are hoping to have in order to get our Tourism Industry back up on its feet. Otherwise, we at the Firm are still waiting for Easter Bunny’s permanent residency application under the Biosecurity Act so that we can have a reasonable excuse to have chocolate eggs delivered every month! Saving Lives at Sea
THE Volunteers Marine Rescue Hervey Bay work behind the scenes in the radio room 365 days a year, 12 hours a day, and the highly skilled skippers and crew are faced with everything from simple activations to life and death scenarios. Also behind the scenes are the Admin and Events Teams busily keeping the organisation’s business running and raising much needed funds. The squadron operates from its base at Urangan Boat Harbour, with an operational area inside Fraser Island from Stewart Island in the Great Sandy Strait to Long Shoal situated approximately 14 NM NNW of Sandy Cape and across to Theodolite Creek, just north of Woodgate. The volunteers were called out over 400 times in 2021 alone for rescues and medical evacuations. The Hervey Bay RSL recognised many years ago that the professional rescue service was invaluable to the Fraser Coast and supported the cause by donating $1500 a month from the Hervey Bay RSL Community Grants Program. With the rising cost of fuel, the committee will now extend that grant to $2000 a month, giving the service an extra $6,000 a year. The $24,000 grant will help cover the cost of fuel, activations, training, and the cost of maintenance on the rescue vessels, including Rescue 1 – a new
12-metre, $1.4 million purpose-built rescue boat that was delivered to VMR in August last year. The total of fuel alone for all three vessels has been more than $50,000 for the first half of this financial year. Fraser Coast boaties can also help the service stay afloat by becoming a member for just $90 a year. The free service of logging on with Marine Rescue Hervey Bay through VHF radio or telephone provides peace of mind that VMR know where you are on the water. VMR will always render assistance to boaties whether they are members or not, but on-water membership can save money through two frees assists to a value of $500 per year if you break down or get in trouble. If you aren’t a member and need help, a bill will be sent out to help cover the cost of the not-for-profit organisation’s service. Kingfisher Bay Resort celebrates ‘The year of 30’ 2022 marks thirty years since the sustainably developed Kingfisher Bay Resort officially opened its doors on K’gari (Fraser Island); a milestone year that is shared by the 30th anniversary of the island’s UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1992. To commemorate the occasion, and in keeping with a long-lasting connection to K’gari, leading tourism operators Kingfisher Bay Resort, Eurong Beach Resort and Fraser Explorer Tours have unveiled a full rebranding across their businesses. The island’s flagship ecotourism accommodation, Kingfisher Bay Resort has retained its founding name, however, features a new islandinspired logo with accent fern and signature forest green colour. Eurong Beach Resort, along the east coast’s famed 75 Mile Beach, will now trade as ‘K’gari Beach Resort’. This is mirrored by Fraser Explorer Tours, which will now operate as ‘K’gari Explorer Tours’. The move follows the World Heritage Area within the Great Sandy National Park, along with the surrounding waters being renamed in September last year, to ‘K’gari’ - the original Butchulla people’s name for the island, which translates to ‘paradise'. Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation (BAC) Director Christine Royan said her

Kingfisher Bay Resort General Manager David Hay said there was no better time to unite their brands. “K’gari is the reason we’re all here – collectively, we connect visitors with this incredible destination, and we felt this year, in line with the World Heritage anniversary, it was the perfect opportunity to embrace this wonderful name change on the island directly across our businesses.” Kingfisher Bay Resort has
a long-standing relationship with the BAC and are currently working together on a new cultural initiative, set to further enhance the Australian Indigenous experiences for visitors to the destination. This follows the 2021 opening of the K’gari World Heritage Discovery Centre – a joint initiative by Kingfisher Bay Resort, the BAC, University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) and the Fraser Coast Council, to heighten awareness of the destination’s environmental significance, and in turn, encourage conservation. Stretching 123 kilometres, K’gari is the largest sand island in the world, recognised for its outstanding universal natural values when it achieved UNESCO status, becoming Queensland’s fourth listed World Heritage environmental area at the time. “For us, it’s not solely about celebrating how far we’ve come over these past three decades, it’s what actions we’re taking moving forward,” said Mr Hay.

Jack Dempsey, Bundaberg Region Mayor is contesting the Hinkler seat BUNDABERG Region Mayor and former Liberal National Party minister Jack Dempsey will contest the seat of Hinkler as an Independent at the 2022 Federal Election. In a statement, Mr Dempsey said he would take leave as Mayor after the election is officially called. Mr Dempsey, who served as police minister from 2006 to 2015 during the Newman government said, “I’m standing as an independent candidate for Hinkler to achieve positive change.” “Hinkler is the food bowl of Australia and with positive change, we’ll become the nation’s capital for agricultural technology and bio-energy.” Mr Dempsey said his policy priorities would include

LOCAL artists and arts groups looking to develop skills, stage exhibitions or events can submit applications for Fraser Coast Regional Arts Development Fund grants now. “The RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and Fraser Coast Regional Council,” Cr Phil Truscott said. “The fund promotes the role and value of arts, culture and heritage as key drivers of a diverse and inclusive community and strong regions. “Previous grants have helped stage puppetry workshops and create puppets for a theatre production, a workshop for Fraser Coast spinners and weavers and a storytellers guide to Heritage Maryborough. “The RADF grants ensure that the Fraser Coast has a rich and vibrant arts community.” For information on grants visit www.frasercoast.qld.gov. au/grants-and-awards. Jaden was asked to be a part of the JC Action Sports Team visiting schools across Queensland doing demos from the custom build truck with a ramp, promoting positive messages for youth. With aspirations of becoming a pro scooter rider, Jaden is on track to making his dreams a reality.

WITH agile and risky moves, two Hervey Bay brothers have taken the state by storm with their scooter riding skills and crazy tricks and are ready to compete nationally. Jaden Hardy, 17 took out first place with Jedd, 13 taking out second place in the recent Australasian Scooter Association (ASA) QLD State Championships in Brisbane. These results have qualified them to compete in the National Titles in Melbourne in May where they will be amongst hundreds of the nation’s best riders as well as competitors from New Zealand. Proud mother Marjo Hardy said, “This is a huge achievement for two local Hervey Bay boys who placed first and second in Brisbane considering there is no longer an indoor skatepark in Hervey Bay.” She said she her prayers were answered when the winners were announced. “It’s especially great news because at half time Jaden was rolling around, did a tail whip, fell and pulled a muscle in his back and I thought ‘oh my gosh’ but he went on and landed every single trick.” “Jedd also got the prize for the most improved rider of the season,” said Ms Hardy. Ms Hardy said the boys, who attend St James Luthern College, have been practicing almost every day at either the local skate parks or on their

AUSTRALIA'S largest and longest-running GPS windsurfing event, 2022 SurfFX Burrum Windfest, returns with a big splash in May. From Wednesday 27 April until Tuesday 3 May, Burrum Heads will welcome about 120 of Australia’s top windsurfing competitors from all over the country and overseas to compete. Organiser Geoff Ringe said he was so pleased to see the festival returning to normal after Covid prevented many competitors from joining last year and the event had to be cancelled in 2020. Starting in 2009, the festival is slowly returning to its pre-Covid popularity and Mr Ringe hopes to see it continue to grow. He said the event was a
great drawcard for Hervey Bay as it pumped money into the economy through accommodation bookings and meals in restaurants and cafes during the weeklong event. “It’s great for the town because we pick a time when it’s between school holidays and after Easter when things quieten down a bit; it pushes a lot more money back into the town and everybody needs that these days,” said Mr Ringe. “I think this event will get much larger.” On a personal note, Mr Ringe said he loved the festival as it provided an opportunity to do the sport he loved and a chance to compete against some of Australia’s best windsurfers. “I love being out on the water, and the competition gives us something to look
forward to.” Competitors wear GPS devices to track their distance and speeds which are uploaded to a global database for competitors to compare speeds and times with riders from around the world. “The competition is really fierce, there’s no doubt about that.” He said the event was an exciting spectacle for onlookers to watch, especially with the kite foils lifting out of the water, “It is quite an amazing sight to see.” “People can wander out to the sandbar and get a closer look.” For anyone interested to know more about the event or to join the sport, visit the WindWanderers Facebook Group.

GET out your pink tutus and dress ups for the Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday 8 May as the community comes together for the 25th anniversary of this nationwide event. In Hervey Bay, hundreds are expected to unite as they run, jog or walk along the Esplanade from the Urangan Pier for the Mother’s Day Classic to celebrate and honour those affected by breast cancer and raise vital funds for research. Proceeds go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for research to improve outcomes for those affected by breast cancer. Co-organiser of the Hervey Bay event, Councillor Jade Wellings said the event was not only a fun day, but the money raised for breast cancer research was saving lives. “This year we’ve got a local ambassador on board who has been through breast cancer.” Cancer survivor and Mother’s Day Classic Ambassador Gemma Lightbody is a mother of young children and believed she wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for some the breast cancer research. “The drugs that saved her life weren’t around 20 years ago; if she had this cancer 20 years ago, she would be dead,” said Cr Wellings. Ms Lightbody shared her experiences of living through breast cancer and undergoing
chemotherapy in a series of videos shared on the Mother’s Day Classic Hervey Bay Facebook page. More than three women under 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer every day, and one will die each week, according to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia and sadly, eight Australians die from it every single day. Together we can improve the lives of those diagnosed with breast cancer now and in the future. Almost 1.5 million Australians have participated in the Mother’s Day Classic over the past 24 years, making it Australia’s largest fun run and walk for breast cancer research. The Mother’s Day Classic Foundation supports the NBCF’s goal of zero deaths
from breast cancer by 2030. There is still so much work that needs to be done to ensure that women can live free of breast cancer in the future. In the 24-year history of the Mother’s Day Classic, almost $40 million has been donated to fund game-changing breast cancer research. Mother’s Day Classic Hervey Bay is on Sunday 8 May from the Urangan Pier, starting at 7.30am and finishing around 9.30am. Participants can join either a five or ten kilometre walk or run. Kids can also join a ‘Junior Dash’ two kilometre event. There will be a large raffle held with many prizes donated by local businesses. Entry costs $35 for adults, $26 concession and $20 for kids. FOR ANYONE wanting to make a difference in the lives of school students, the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre’s Youth Mentoring Program is looking for volunteers to join their team. The program offers mentoring support for school students to build their confidence and well-being. It is aimed at school students aged between seven and 17 years old who are having trouble at school by pairing them with a trained Volunteer Mentor. HBNC CEO, Tanya Stevenson, said the Youth Mentoring Program was about building positive mentoring relationships. “Our incredible volunteer
mentors work with students to offer a sounding board, listen and help with goal setting,” Tanya said. This referral-based program involves the mentors visiting students one to two times per week at school and providing support by listening, assisting with goal setting and helping them to recognise their strengths. Mentors then develop their strengths and act as an advisor for their ideas and problems in positive, constructive and respectful ways to help them achieve their goals in all aspects of life. Youth Mentoring Coordinator, Rowena Allen, said she was always looking for appropriately skilled mentors
to get involved. “This is a unique volunteering opportunity and one that offers the chance to make a real, one-on-one difference in a young person’s life,” Rowena said. COMMUNITY support for the Burrum District Community Men’s Shed continues to grow as shown by the awarding of funding in the latest round of RSL Community Grants. The group was granted $2600 to provide concrete slabs for garden sheds which will be used to store bins for their Cash for Cans program. The Cash for Cans initiative has been a major fund raiser for the group with support from three local caravan parks and the community. An off shoot of this exercise has seen the group participate in the Lids4Kids project where the caps from hundreds of plastic bottle are collected, washed and then “dropped off” at collection point in Hervey Bay. The collected plastic bottle lids are melted down into 3D printer filament to make prosthetic limbs for children. “This worthwhile project sees the tops going to a good cause
and not landfill,” said Burrum District Community Men’s Shed President John Laffin. “Once again, we have to thank Fraser Coast Regional Council for their belief in and support of our shed’s aims and ideals in promoting Men’s Health in a way that is unique to Men’s Sheds, skill sharing and good old fashioned mateship,” said Mr Laffin. “We would like to record our appreciation for funding received in the Rapid Response Grants 21-22, Round 3 to purchase additional tools and equipment.” The Monthly Community Grant Round 1 provided funding for the dividing wall in the new woodwork shed and the garden shed to house additional CNC equipment. This funding will allow the creation of new opportunities for educational and leisure activities that support the development of new skills, encourage social inclusion
and provision of increased assistance to other local notfor-profit groups and charities who deliver community support services to the region. With the new woodwork shed erected, thanks to a grant from the Community Gambling Benefit Fund, the “fitting out” of the shed can progress, making room for additional machines such as wood lathes and scroll saws. “These machines have been under-utilized because of the lack of space in our original shed.” “Members can now participate in a variety of additional activities including woodturning and the challenging Intarsia using the scroll saws. “We in turn support other Community Groups and where possible local contractors are used in any of our projects. HERVEY Bay’s Brianna Holston took out the Jani-King In-Service Rising Star Award at the recent Busy Bees Excellence Awards for childcare in Brisbane. The Busy Bees Excellence Awards recognise and honour the most important part of the Busy Bees nationwide organisation; its people. The Jani-King InService Rising Star Award recognises an individual who has been with Busy Bees for less than 12 months and has made a significant impact at a Busy Bees Service since the beginning of their Busy Bees journey. Open to any role type at a Service, this award shines a positive light on the dedication, motivation, skills and culture that this individual brings to the team, children and families at the Service, and identifies a shining star with a strong future career pathway at Busy Bees. In front of more than 200 peers, Brianna Holston, from Fraser Coast Busy Bees childcare centre, won the prestigious award. Brianna, 18, who attended Urangan State High School, first came to Busy Bees at
Fraser Coast in 2021 as a student placement while she was studying her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care at TAFE Queensland, Hervey Bay campus. “When I was looking for placement, I was amazed with how Busy Bees looked. Mel (Melanie Gapes, Service Manager) was the nicest, most welcoming person to speak to and I immediately felt comfortable,” Brianna said. “When Mel told me that I had won the award for “Rising Star” I was shocked and lost for words. “I thought ‘why me out of everyone at Busy Bees’, I just couldn’t believe it. “Walking up on stage I was nervous, but once I received the award and listened to what others had said about me, I felt
proud of myself. “It was an amazing experience and just shows how supportive and uplifting my team is – always bringing out the best in each other. I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am without them.” Melanie Gapes, Service Manager, Fraser Coast Busy Bees said, “As a student in our Service, Bree was very calm, friendly and approachable. Intersection upgrade The intersection of Pulgul Street and Moolyyir Street at Urangan will have an upgrade thanks to funding through the Black Spots Program.
The $550,000 project will involve installing a single lane roundabout, including pedestrian refuges on minor legs with ramps and footpath connectivity to existing footpaths, on/ off ramps for cyclists, upgraded street lighting and improvements to sight distance and delineation. The Black Spot Program funds safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at locations where a number of serious crashes are known to have occurred, or are at risk of occurring. Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said, “These projects wouldn’t be delivered without the community’s vital input to identify problems areas on our local roads.” “Anyone can nominate a dangerous intersection in your local area – maybe it’s an intersection you pass
through every day on your way to drop the kids off at school, or on your way to work. I encourage all residents and motorists in the region to nominate projects for future funding rounds.” To nominate a black spot, visit investment.infrastructure.gov.au/ funding/blackspots.
Tinnanbar Road upgrade Residents and visitors travelling to Tinnanbar will soon have a smoother journey with work underway to seal 1.4km of Tinnabar Road, the main access to the seaside village fronting the Sandy Strait. The Council awarded the contract for the $1.13 million project to local company JAC Civil.
The work includes improving about 1.4km of the road, starting at the Cooloola Coast Road intersection, to Rural Collector standard with an 8m wide bitumen seal. “It is anticipated that the work will be completed by August, weather permitting,” Cr Daniel Sanderson said. “Council has a huge focus on improving our road network. “In the budget this year about a third of the capital works budget almost $50 million – was allocated on roads, bridges and drainage.” The project is the first of four stages to seal the road into Tinnanbar, Cr Daniel Sanderson said. Funding to complete further stages will be considered as part of future budget deliberations said Cr Sanerson.

FRASER Coast residents are invited to choose their favourite bookmark design from almost 150 entries in Fraser Coast Libraries’ Design-a-Bookmark competition. Mayor George Seymour said the People’s Choice Award was launched this year because library members had asked to see all of the entries. “As a cherry on top of being able to see all of the entries, we decided to ask people to vote for the one they liked best,” he said. “Entrants put in a magnificent effort creating their imaginative bookmark designs and we’re delighted to acknowledge each of them by displaying their artwork.” Cr Seymour said people could vote online or in-person at any of the library branches in Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro, Howard or Burrum Heads. “The four age-category winners will be chosen by Hervey Bay Regional Gallery
director Ashleigh Whatling, and all the winning bookmark designs, including the People’s Choice Award winner, will be professionally printed and available for free at our libraries,” he said. “The winners will also be presented with a $50 gift voucher.” In-person voting at library branches would close on Saturday, April 23 and online voting would close at 11.55pm on Sunday, April 24, he said. “I’d encourage everyone to go online or visit their nearest library branch to see all of the wonderful work by our creative library members and to cast their vote,” Cr Seymour said. SWIMMING: Five young swimmers from the Hervey Bay Swimming Club will travel to Adelaide this week to compete in the 2022 Swimming Australia Age Championships. Club president and coach Caleb Ryan believes the club should be proud to have five swimmers at this level. “It is the pinnacle for many of these kids,” Ryan said. He credited the hard work
and sacrifices they have made as the main reason for their success. “It proves that you can be rewarded if you work hard,” he said. Last Thursday, the
swimmers were presented with certificates and caps before their fellow club swimmers. The eight-day event began last week with the swimmers racing at different times throughout the week.

Breakaways and Hervey Bay Netball Association umpire Tasha Nichols will officiate at the championships. Nichols was umpiring at the Hervey Bay Netball Breakaways and Hervey Bay Netball Association umpire Tasha Nichols will representative officiate at the championships. carnival when she learned she had been selected. “I am super excited, and it hasn’t sunk in yet,” Nichols said. The fifteen-year-old has been umpiring for over four years and is currently a C badge level umpire. “My short-term goal is to get my B badge with the long-term goal to umpire in the Super Netball series,” she said. Nichols loves umpiring and believes it suits her personality. “I love doing it; I am a bit of a control freak,” Mentor Harley Micallef believes Nichols has the drive to go as far as she wants to in the sport. “She has had the confidence from day one and keeps progressing. She works harder than anyone I know,” Micallef said. Nichols will use the experience of the state championships to assist her in reaching her long-term goal in umpiring. “It is another gateway to go through to umpire in future championships,” She understands that she has not been able to develop without the assistance and guidance from many people. “I want to thank my mum, Harley, the Breakaways club and Hervey Bay Netball for their support,” said Nicols.
