Urraween Reservoir wins excellence award THE UPGRADE of the Urraween Reservoir with its floating roof and liner replacement was named one of the state’s best public works projects by the sector’s peak body, the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia Queensland (IPWEAQ), at their recent annual conference in Cairns. The Fraser Coast Regional Council received the Innovation and Sustainability in Water award for the Urraween Reservoir - Floating Roof and Liner Replacement project. IPWEAQ CEO Leigh Cunningham said the annual excellence awards recognised the success of infrastructure and engineering projects and the people who deliver them across the state. “The project highlights how public works engineering is improving our communities and growing our economies through every aspect of our lives, from transportation and water supply to road safety and recycling, to recreation at football stadiums, parks and walking trails.” The project involved a year of planning, trials, and teamwork to ensure water security when the largest water reservoir in the network was taken offline for three months to reline. The project team showed significant innovation in the configuration, testing and ongoing operation of a system to bypass the reservoir for

The award was due recognition of the skills and dedication of the Wide Bay Water team, Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said. The replacement of the floating roof and liner was part of a multi-million project undertaken by Wide Bay Water to improve the efficiency and performance of the supply of water supply to Hervey Bay. “Through the upgrade of pumps and pipework, Wide Bay Water has catered for population growth and saved money by cutting electricity costs,” he said.

“The new booster pumps will enable us to use available pressure in the existing trunk water supply system from the Takura Reservoir to transfer water directly to the Ghost Hill Reservoirs, thereby cutting power costs. “There will also be a bypass to allow flow from Takura Reservoir to Ghost Hill Reservoir by gravity during low demand periods.” In the 2021/22 budget, Council allocated $37.1 million for water, waste and sewerage capital works projects. The award was among 30 projects and people to win at the awards.

Hands on heart and in clay for the ‘Lest We Forget Poppy Project’ REMEMBRANCE Day is a time of reflection and acknowledgement of the physical and mental sacrifices people make in protecting our country during conflict; this sentiment has driven the ‘Lest We Forget’ Poppy Project Hervey Bay. A group of nine local artists are creating 1443 ceramic Flanders poppies to be displayed as part of Anzac Day services at the Light Horse Memorial, Freedom Park in Hervey Bay 2022. This number represents the total number of names listed on the Light Horse Memorial and the Pialba Cenotaph and the visual art installation, covering more than 50 square metres to recognise the service and sacrifices made by all military people. A ceramic poppy art installation in London by Paul Cummins and Tom Piper inspired the concept; however, the design used is unique to the Hervey Bay group. Last week the group held a poppy-making event at the Pialba Bowling Club with 26 invited local representatives, including the mayor, councillors, school principals, veterans’ groups and emergency services, which will be sold then displayed on Anzac Day next year. All money raised will go to Mates4Mates, an organisation that supports current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force members and their families who have been impacted by their service. Bayside Christian College new buiding gets full marks

SENIOR students at Bayside Christian College have a place to call their own with the completion of their new school building. In just over seven months from when the first sod was turned on the building site, the new senior students’ building, S Block, was officially opened recently. The much-anticipated building contains eight classrooms for the senior students at the growing school. Bayside Christian College principal Noela Ensbey previously said, “Bayside Christian College began in 2018 with 38 students and over the last four years it has grown to 490 students; last year we had our first cohort of Year 12s go through.” The senior students were using the TAFE campus until the building was completed. The official building opening was attended by Principal Noela Ensbey, Deputy Principal David Proudlove, wellbeing coordinator Marissa Francis, head of school Andrew Priaulx, Fraser Coast Councillor David Lee, school captains Chloe Howe and Jessica Zabodal as well as other staff and parents and friends of Bayside Christian College. The transition from primary school to secondary school can be challenging. Initiatives such as our Year 7 information evenings, orientation days, buddy program and Spirit Week all assist new students to enter an environment which is welcoming. Spirit Week takes students out of the classroom to engage with one another, build new relationships across all year levels, and challenge themselves with activities requiring them to think differently and to be inspired.

Uniting the old and young

Seniors and preschoolers at East St Kindy are enjoying the Moving Moments intergenerational playgroup HERVEY Bay’s young and old have sown seeds of connection as part of an intergenerational playgroup. Lutheran Services’ Moving Moments program has connected seniors with young learners at C&K East St Kindy in Scarness through an inclusive and inspiring arts and crafts program, music and dancing. Most recently, the children at C&K East Street Kindy planted seeds and filled a bird bath with donated and freshly decorated items from their senior friends. Hervey Bay Moving Moments participant Rae McCrea said she loves interacting with the children. “I love that every day is different, and we get to take part in all sorts of exciting activities, whether that be play-based learning, building forts or blocks or enjoying the outdoors. There truly is never a dull moment, and so many wonderful connections are made.” The mother of two and grandmother of nine said, “Encouraging and sharing time

connections give seniors a real sense of purpose. They have so much to offer that is valued by the teachers and children alike. “Friendships flourish between the kids and seniors, and the parents get involved too, it’s a lovely experience for everyone involved. Landcare is a national notfor-profit organisation with groups all across the country with the common aim to revegetate both private and public land, manage invasive weeds, and access local resources and knowledge as it relates to flora and fauna biodiversity. Mr Johansen said the first step for the new group is to get people together who are interested in making a difference to the environment. “There’s a lot of land here that could benefit from being weeded and revegetated to absorb carbon from the atmosphere.” “The more trees we can put in the more carbon they absorb.” His philosophy is simple, “We borrow the planet off tomorrow’s children and it’s up to us to look after it; that’s what I believe and work towards.” “I’d like to get the group up and running as soon as possible.” He encourages all to “Come along and learn about nature!” The knowledgeable retiree has a strong background in

Lifestyle cafe helps keep Bay seniors on their feet AN EXCITING new cafébased healthcare concept is helping Hervey Bay seniors, who have recently experienced a fall, regain their confidence and strength so they can get back, and stay, on their feet. An initiative of the Fraser Coast Falls Prevention Service, the Lifestyle Café, which incorporates the Active at Home program, launched at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre this month for seniors over 65 and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 50. The Fraser Coast Falls Prevention Service is a collaboration between Central Queensland Wide Bay Sunshine Coast PHN, Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service, Queensland Ambulance Service and Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre. STEAMfesta Robotique workshops have arrived with a spark of something different and a robot-shaped edge for creators on the Fraser Coast. Competitive robot builder Harley Wolfe has joined the STEAMfesta creative team to share his passion for the sport and his belief that science and engineering are a lot more fun than it’s made out to be. Whilst Harley’s work now includes support for lifesaving machines in hospitals, it’s still the excitement of building fighting robots that drives him to experiment with new winning ideas. Originally from Rockhampton, Harley said it was his single-minded passion to build a better robot that first led him to a career path in mining where he apprenticed as a Heavy Diesel Fitter before becoming a robot technician and entering the world of industrial robot services. “When I was a youngster, I remember watching Robot Wars U.K. and their 700kg House Robot ‘Sir Kill-a-Lot’, and thinking I want to make that, so what do I need to learn…everything! “Physics, engineering, electronics the whole shebang! As Cyber Security Awareness Month draws to a close, small businesses are being encouraged to check their cyber fitness and reduce the risks of working online with a new toolkit from Business Queensland. The Cyber Security SelfHelp toolkit, helps small businesses better manage the cyber security elements of running their business. Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer said Cyber Security Awareness Month was an ideal time for a business health check to identify the risks and implement regular activities to boost cyber fitness. “Technology plays an important role in business today and can be used to improve efficiencies and productivity, but it also carries risk,” Minister Farmer said. “Due to COVID-19, more and more businesses are communicating, working and offering services online. “According to small business cybersecurity specialists Cynch, in the past year two out of five Australian small businesses have suffered from an online security incident which can cause significant disruptions. “Small businesses don’t need other interruptions right now, so making sure you are

cyber safe should be a high priority for business owners. “The Australian Cyber Security Centre Annual Cyber Threat Report 2020-21 says Australians made more than 67,000 cybercrime reports totalling more than $33 billion last year – small businesses made a higher number of reports than the previous financial year, each losing an average of almost $9000. “Queenslanders reported 30 percent of all cybercrimes.” Minister Farmer said there were simple things all businesses could do to avoid incidents like phishing scams and password attacks. NEWSINBRIEF Funding to build stronger communities Community groups and not-forprofit organisations can submit an Expression of Interest now for a share of $150,000 in grants for small capital projects and equipment upgrades. Expressions are open for Round 7 of the Stronger Communities Programme which provides grants of between $2500 and $20,000. “Community groups contribute so much to our local community, making them better places to live, work and

raise a family,” Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said. The program will support up to 20 projects. “This type of investment brings people together by strengthening social connections, building community participation and delivering a brighter and more vibrant future for communities,” Mr Pitt said. “More than 60 projects right across the Hinkler electorate have received funding through previous rounds of the Stronger Communities Programme. “Projects have included upgraded

kitchens, a portable BBQ trailer, shade sails and marquees, air conditioning in a community hall, a community run café, a wheelchair accessible bus, new equipment, improved disability access, upgraded changing rooms, little libraries, and many more.” Grant funding will be available for up to 100 per cent of eligible project costs except for local governing bodies where grant funding will be up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs. Following the EOI process, a community panel will identify potential projects and make

recommendations. Only applicants invited to apply by their MP will proceed to the formal application process. TRIATHLON: One of the Fraser Coast’s signature sporting events, the Hervey Bay 100, is only days away, with athletes flooding to the Fraser Coast. The 2020 event was named the Fraser Coast’s Event of the Year in 2020. The organisers believe this year’s event will only be better yet again. An entire weekend of action, including the Hervey Bay 100, 50, Barge to Beach and Super Saturday, have added a Hundy Crit to the program. The crit will run along the Esplanade between Apex Park and the Beach House Hotel on Saturday afternoon. “We are determined to add to an outstanding event. We

don’t aim to be the biggest triathlon event, just the best,” organiser spokesman Jeff Morris said. The Hundy team believes they need to create an event that attracts competitors and spectators to the event and has them return to stay and visit the Fraser Coast. “This event shows people how good the Fraser Coast is,” Morris said. This year’s event includes a quality field, including Olympian Ash Gentle, who recently won her eighth Noosa Triathlon. Hervey Bay’s Kirra Seidel will also be a race favourite with the two-time winner in the men’s Simon Hearn. The inaugural winner in 2021, Steven Schofield,

will also race again in his hometown event. “It would be great to present our Whale Tail trophy to one of the locals,” Morris said. The organisers can’t thank the community volunteers enough for getting involved in the event. “Rotary, Urangan State High School and all of the other groups add to the event, and we are thankful for their support,” he said. He understands that the event does impact the community with road closures. “I just want to thank the wider community for their understanding about the inconvenience this causes,” he said.
