Bikers spread cheer in record breaking Toy Run

OVER 400 motorcyclists and participants joined forces to bring Christmas joy to more than 500 Fraser Coast families in need this year. The Independent Riders Annual Toy Run, held on 5 December, was recordbreaking after a successful drive to gather toys and donations reached over $44,500, a significant jump on last year’s $28,000. The large convoy toured from the Brolga Theatre in Maryborough and ended at the Hervey Bay Sports Club. Michael Tucker, Independent Riders Australia director said it was amazing to see such fantastic community support and so many people involved in the event. This was the eighth year Independent Rider have organised the event. From September each year the group have stalls at shopping centres to gather donations. Once the gathering is complete, several worthy organisations are presented
with toys, food/meat vouchers, passes to aquatic centre, wildlife sanctuary and much more. Some of these organisations include Centacare Maryborough, Trauma Assist Fraser Coast, Burrum Heads Neighbourhood Centre, Act4kids Maryborough, Community Housing Emergency Assistance Maryborough, Fraser Coast Family Networks, Kids Comfort Zone and the Children’s Ward at the Hervey Bay Hospital. Event coordinator Julie Bellert said the event was a great example of community organisations, businesses and individuals coming together to help those in need. “No one will argue that the last 18 months or so have been pretty rough for families, children as well as local business. “With this in mind we made a commitment to help as many as we could from this year’s Fraser Coast Toy Run,” said Ms Bellert.
The pair also thanked Ken Diehm, the CEO from Fraser Coast Regional Council for volunteering his time to this event for the third year and MACE Widebay for their understanding and suppor. Mr Tucker said the event also announced Siobhan Ogden as the Disability Ambassador of the year. Siobhan won the art competition that was held as part of the event. As the event was evolving, Mr Tucker said they would probably create the Disability Ambassador awards as a separate event in the future to give it the attention it deserved and to show that people with disabilities can be involved in major events. Mr Tucker said the benefits of being involved with the Toy Run were far reaching as it also gave purpose and meaning to people who may suffer mental health issues something positive to focus on. “I love the feeling of making a difference,” said Mr Tucker.

THE COMMUNITY Bank Hervey Bay is excited to announce their support to an initiative that will bring safe overnight accommodation to the homeless in the Fraser Coast Region. The local community bank has confirmed at their recent AGM a $100,000 investment towards a mobile converted bus that aims at providing homeless people with a safe and comfortable overnight environment in a partnership with sleepbus. Each sleepbus is a refurbished coach that will provide accommodation for up to 20 people each night. Individual sleep pods are climate controlled, in twin cabins, with a lockable door and toilet. Pillows, sheets and a quilt are included. With overnight security and CCTV surveillance, free-to-air TV, and a USB charging point, everyone is looked after. Sleepbus is the brainchild of Simon Rowe, who now manages eight sleepbuses across Australia, providing more than 1,000 people a week with much-improved sleeping arrangements. Simon understands the feeling of being homeless. In his 20s, he found himself evicted from his rental and lived in his car for four months. Now, after a successful business management career, his devotion to this cause is "hands-on" as he oversees the full refurbishment of each bus. He states, "a sleep can change everything." Tim tells the story of a homeless person who visited the branch regularly and only recently died suddenly, "This really affected our staff... “Our organisation wanted a project that the entire staff were emotionally invested in also." After going virtual last year, the 2022 Sandcastle Competition will be held live on the shore at Scarness Beach near the pier on Saturday 8 January from 3pm to 7pm. Everyone is invited to participate in the fun, all for a worthy cause. In its seventh year, the event acts as a fundraiser for the Cancer Council. Organiser 13-year-old Monique Bailey and her mother Charmaine are excited to put on the popular event. “It’s such a fantastic family fun day out on the beach,” said Monique. “There’s a wonderful sense of

Entrants are encouraged to preregister online but can also register on the day. All entries will be posted on Facebook later that evening, and the winner will be announced after that. Each year the event raises approximately $1000 for the Cancer Council; it has raised roughly $7000 over its seven years. “She’ll be right” won’t save your life at the beach
LIFE Saving Queensland are urging young people to consider their personal risk when heading to the beach. This summer at the beach, “She’ll be right”, won’t save your life. Surf Life Saving Queensland are pleading with young beachgoers to consider that the risks they don’t take will ultimately make them safer. Surf Life Saving Queensland’s 2021 Coast Safe Report revealed that of the 20 people who tragically lost their lives on Queensland’s coastline last year, 75% of those people were between the ages of 20-49 years old. In addition to this alarming statistic, the average age of people rescued last year was 24 years. Hervey Bay’s Surf Life Saving Club president Darren Everard wants people to be
aware of essential safety tips to reduce their risk when heading to the beach. “We encourage people to swim between the flags at all times as you never know when there will be a moment that assistance is needed.” “We are asking people to remember the Key Safety Tips for Summer 2021/22:” 1. Swim at a patrolled beach between the red and yellow flags – surf lifesavers or lifeguards are there to help if you get into trouble 2. Wear a lifejacket if you are going boating, rock fishing, or on watercraft 3. Avoid alcohol and drugs while undertaking water activities 4. Always supervise children on, in and around water at all times “The beach is a happy place for so many of us

Welcome back ‘New Year’s Eve by the Beach’, taking place at Bill Fraser Park in Torquay on Friday 31 December, from 2pm – 8pm. The free non-ticketed event will be action packed with family fun activities, food vendors, market stalls, and the highly anticipated fireworks display brought to you by Bendigo Bank. Eventgoers can expect to dance the night away with
live entertainment by local musicians Andrew Copland, Jon Vea Vea and the Hervey Bay Pipe Band to open. “Say farewell to 2021 while listening to the musical stylings of Andrew Copland and Jon Vea Vea, browse through the market stalls or book a table at one of the restaurants along the Esplanade at Torquay. The Hervey Bay RSL Pipe Band will be kicking off the afternoon festivities from 2pm at Bill Fraser Park, with a family-friendly firework display launching at 8pm thanks to our sponsors Bendigo Bank,” said event Torquay Progress Association Event Organiser,

Members from the Hervey Bay Barfly Club presented donations to several local organisations SEVERAL Fraser Coast residents and local organisations were very grateful last week as the Hervey Bay Barfly Club made some generous donations in time for Christmas. A large group gathered at the Beach House Hotel for the presentation of donations and awards as part of the Barfly Club’s annual Christmas party and AGM. The club donated just over $5000 to the Hervey Bay Hospital Auxiliary for the purchase of medical ‘Bed Scales’. Other recipients of the annual donations were Trish and Josie from ‘Guardians of the Homeless’. They were given $3000 for their ongoing effort to support homeless people in Hervey Bay. These women collect cans for cash to purchase items for the
homeless as well as providing a regular twice weekly breakfast. The Barfly Club also donated $2000 in vouchers and some Christmas packs with life essentials to residents in need. Over $3000 in prizes were given away on the day as part of their annual giant Christmas raffle. Prizes included a holiday voucher and $250 Visa Card from Ingenia Lifestyle; a sunset cruise from Whalesong, a joy flight from Mark McMurtrie of River Heads Pharmacy (and pilot), as well as over a dozen minor prizes all donated to the Club from Hervey Bay Businesses. President of the Hervey Bay Barfly Club, Ken Stanton said the club raised money by conducting raffles at the Beach House Hotel every Saturday afternoon at 1pm. “The Club was founded in
2001 by six ex-servicemen wishing to assist individuals and families in the Fraser Coast area, who, through no fault of their own, had fallen upon hard times,” said Mr Stanton. He said the club of approximately 50 members made an impact by flying under the radar and donating to local organisations and residents in need. Since the club started, they have donated over $300,000 to approved Fraser Coast residents and other worthy organisations said the president. Mr Stanton was very appreciative of the tireless effort from the volunteer members of their club and wanted to thank them for providing this service to the community.

AS CHRISTMAS approaches and schools close down for the year, the Hervey Bay VIEW Club was very aware of the financial strain incurred by disadvantaged families in January when families have to prepare children for the school year ahead. During the last few months of 2021, The Smith Family charity asked members to help by donating to ‘Joyspreaders’ essential school requirements. The Joyspreaders collect school supplies such as reading resources, Let’s Count Packs, Smart and Inspire, Mentorship, Primary and High School Packs to name a few. “Some of our members have been making special bags to hold the donated items to be sent to the Smith Family,” said VIEW member Bev Cornwell. “We are all very aware that a good education is so essential for all children no matter what background they are from to succeed in life and build a solid foundation for future career opportunities.” These bags and their precious contents are given to the Queensland branch of the Smith Family to distribute to children sponsored by VIEW Clubs throughout the state. “The Hervey Bay VIEW Club

Toy raffle bonanza at the Hervey Bay RSL The Hervey Bay RSL is spreading some Christmas cheer early with their legendary giant Christmas Toy Raffle taking place on Sunday, December 19. New sub-specialty delivers care closer to home WIDE Bay residents with conditions affecting their joints, muscle and soft tissue are receiving quality care closer to home with a new rheumatology specialist outpatient service now in place. The outreach model, which aims to improve health outcomes through better access to care, is a collaboration between Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS) and Metro North Health. Wide Bay Hospital and Health Board Chair Peta Jamieson said the Board welcomed the partnership with Metro North Health to provide more equitable access to care in the Wide Bay region. “For some time now, we have been working towards improving access to highquality, safe healthcare
throughout Wide Bay, in line with our strategic direction to ‘deliver more care locally’,” Ms Jamieson said. “The Board and I are thrilled that residents in Wide Bay now have enhanced access to public rheumatology services without having to travel outside of the region for care,” Ms Jamieson said. “Patients with a rheumatologic disorder are often suffering from severe and chronic inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, which results in pain, swelling, stiffness and sometimes loss of function. “Providing a service within our region will greatly improve their quality of life, provide a much less stressful and painful experience and reduce the financial and social burden of travelling to Brisbane for care.”
WBHHS Chief Executive Debbie Carroll said the new rheumatology specialist outpatient service was being delivered through an innovative combination of in-person and technology-enabled care. “Each month, rheumatology specialists from The Prince Charles Hospital along with Professor Geoff McColl from the University of Queensland, will travel to Hervey Bay Hospital to hold a full day outpatient clinic for residents across the Wide Bay region,” Ms Carroll said. “In addition, a telehealth clinic will be delivered three times a month at Hervey Bay Hospital, a pilot site for Wide Bay, to help to reduce waiting times and support faster diagnosis and appropriate treatment. “The specialists will
provide a range of diagnosis and treatment services and management of conditions such as arthritis, inflammatory connective tissue disease and other musculoskeletal disorders. “More than 600 patients and in many cases their carers or escorts, who ordinarily would have had to complete a round trip to Brisbane for a rheumatology consultation, can now be seen locally – I’m delighted these patients and their families will experience
financial, emotional and psychological savings. “The new outreach service also presents local training opportunities, particularly for students of The University of Queensland who are receiving training through the Rural Clinical School.” Ms Carroll also took the opportunity to acknowledge and thank CheckUP Australia, a not-for profit organisation, who has generously agreed to fund charter flights for our specialists for three months.
“This generous support will ensure no disruptions to patient appointments due to travel, particularly with the risk of commercial flight changes and/or cancellations due to the ongoing impacts COVID-19,” she said.” Metro North Health Executive Director Medicine Stream Jeffrey Rowland said the team were pleased that there was now an excellent specialist rheumatology service providing care closer to home.

Bay’s Futsal champions selected to play in Fiji FIVE young Hervey Bay futsal champions have been selected to travel to Fiji as part of Queensland’s elite team. Malakai Yeatman, Lucas Mills, Will Coppens, Tom Raxach and Harrison Haigh were selected in their respective age groups to represent Queensland Country in the recent National Futsal Championships in Brisbane. Their teams were made up of players from Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Bundaberg and Mackay. Futsal Queensland Country Coordinator Peter Souvlis said it was a fantastic achievement for the boys, “They’re great boys who have progressed in leaps and bounds.” “It doesn’t matter if they go to Fiji but being selected has been a huge honour for them and their schools,” said Mr Souvlis. Malakai’s mother, Carmen Yeatman said, “Malakai and the U9 Queensland Country team were undefeated throughout the tournament. They had a very intense Grand Final where Malakai was fortunate enough to score the golden goal in overtime. The team were excited and honoured to be the first Queensland Country team to take home the gold medal.” “Additionally, Malakai was nominated by opposing teams’ coaches and officials and has been selected to be part of the

him and his team.” The boys have been selected to play in the 2022 Nationals in January as well as being invited to attend a 10-day tour to Fiji next year. Futsal is a football-based game, variation of minifootball played on a hard court, smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors. It has similarities to five-a-side football and indoor soccer.
Six men buried alive for over six years HOW could they possibly survive? Hervey Bay author Tony Matthews has done it again, bringing to life an astonishing story of survival to emerge from the era of the Second World War. Mr Matthews said he unearthed the story while researching another project, “It was when I was writing River of Dreams, A History of Maryborough & District. “At that time I was literally reading every single edition of a newspaper (the Maryborough Chronicle), that had been published from 1861 until the mid-1990s, and that is when I found a single-column report about the discovery of the trapped Germans.” He said the news of the event was dwarfed by the main stories of Soviet spy defectors at the time; the trapped Germans story was buried

100 trades jobs up for grabs
Queensland Government builder QBuild is opening applications for 100 trades jobs, including 20 apprenticeships, in key locations across the state including Maryborough.. Minister for Public Works Mick de Brenni said advertising was opening to fill 100 jobs in centres including Atherton, Bundaberg, Cairns, Kingaroy, Maryborough, Rockhampton, Thursday Island and Toowoomba. The 80 qualified trades jobs include plumbers, painters, electricians, carpenters and refrigeration mechanics. The latest round of recruitment is part of the Queensland Government’s Rebuilding QBuild initiative which will see 300 tradesbased staff, including 60 apprentices, employed in the three years to August 2022, Mr de Brenni said. “For this next apprentice intake, we will specifically encourage young Queensland women to consider hard-hat
careers. “Right now, 16 per cent of QBuild’s apprentices are women. “That’s even better than the National Women in Construction target of 11 per cent. “QBuild provides decent, well paid, and secure employment. “At this time of year, it is also important to remember the role QBuild plays during a disaster. “QBuild staff are among the first on the ground, completing repairs and building works to get communities back on their feet.” “QBuild is today once again renowned as a major training ground for the next generation of blue-collar trades in Queensland,” Mr de Brenni said.

Residents are being encouraged to have their say on options for a playground upgrade at the popular ESA Park on the Esplanade at Point Vernon. Cr David Lewis said the ESA Park playground was popular
for family gatherings and children’s parties. “ESA Park is named after ESA Foundation which is dedicated to the promotion of continuing education and to altruistic activities that make a positive difference in the world community,” he said. “The park contains a playground, barbecue and toilet facilities and easy access to the beach and tidal rock pools. “Due to the popularity of the playground and its exposure to the ocean, the equipment now requires an upgrade. “Council wants residents to help choose the replacement equipment. “We have two design options and would like to hear your feedback.”

Graffiti Grannies Josie Street and Robyn Golby with some of their handiwork HERVEY Bay is in full festive spirit with the addition of colourful knitted and crocheted sleeves adorning trees and bollards in Pialba along the Pialba Maryborough Road near Main street. The crafty culprits responsible are a group of seven known as the ‘graffiti grannies’ from the A Touch of Craft group. For the past eight years, the group have been wrapping trees and bollards at Christmas time to give people something colourful to look at during the holidays. Group organiser Josie Street said “I think it brings a lot of joy and smiles to the community and their kids.” “It’s great to bring excitement to the festive season,” said Josie.
The labour of love project takes many hours of preparation, measurements and creating throughout the year. Each piece can be reused about two times before the colours start fading. Group member Robyn Goldby said each bollard took around 40 hours of work but said the rewards were worth it, “It makes you feel good to bring joy.” The women said they have received so many positive comments from the eyecatching display near the traffic lights. Passer-by Carol Dobson said, “I think it is absolutely awesome. I’ve lived here for five years and have never seen anything like this before moving here.”
The craft group spent four hours installing the display at the start of December and plan to take them down on 2 January. Yarn-bombing of trees was an initiative suggested at a Council meeting eight years ago, “We got a group together and have been doing it every year since.” A Touch of Craft group also knit, crochet and sew handmade items for Hervey Bay’s Comfort Zone, Hervey Bay Hospital wards and for homeless people. The group met every Monday from 9am to 12pm at The Seachange Resort Hall, 34-56 Elizabeth Street, Urangan and always welcome new members to join them.
