FOLLOWING on from recent community consultation, Fraser Coast Regional Council has interpreted the results as a green-light to commence engagement with companies for a permit to further extend the e-scooter program. Turn it up. That’s a bit of laugh really. It is fair to say that the e-scooters have been mired in controversy since their introduction over a year ago and the twisted messaging of the Community Consultation process has little to quell that. Council’s carefully worded release of June 15th failed to notify that 48.9% of respondents
LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR Better use for oval
Hello my name is Christine and I live in Urangan Hervey Bay. I was reading your free paper as it is the only one we have now, and I took note of the photo of Seafront Oval. This is a blank canvas with nothing in it, not even goal posts, but we are going to provide free WiFi, so everybody is going to flock down there, sit in the middle of the oval and use the free internet? I think this is a totally useless piece of land that could be made really beautiful. Build it
and they will come. There is a park in Cairns called Munro Martin Park which was the same until Mayor Bob Manning decided to improve it. It is now visited by thousands of tourists every year. If you have not seen it go on the internet and have a look. Plant covered walkways, flower gardens and an amphitheatre where people can enjoy outdoor entertainment; there is no end to the use of this parkland. Hervey Bay has a beautiful stretch of beach and natural
did not think the e-scooters should remain and 11.9% were undecided, or in other words, didn’t care enough to prosecute a case for yes. Lets make this simple, 25% more people didn’t want them – than did. Fact. Why then, on the basis of just 39.2% of respondents thinking the e-scooters should remain, have they been given a pass mark? Surely the undecided don’t preference a yes vote? I live on the Esplanade and see the scooters strewn everywhere, every day. I have also seen so many near misses with pedestrians on the
walking path, that it’s just a matter of time. The e-scooters are an eyesore that serve little to no community benefit, and cherry picking numbers out of the Community Consultation process to sell it, is a farce. Tell me what you think.

bush land on most of it, also the Botanical Gardens is lovely but lacks creative colourful gardens, apart from the Orchid house. The city lacks a beautiful creative parkland and if this is where the city heart is going to be in the future we need to address this lack of a Central Park and utilise the existing green paddock so the tourists will come and remember not just a beach. I hope you find my comments constructive and Chris Benton useful.

Don’t forget our Sports Precinct
I was interested to see that Stirling Hinchliffe MP, Minister for Tourism, Innovation and Sport, Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympic and Paralympic Sport visited our region and spoke at a number of local events recently. Our Sports Precinct needs to be a priority investment for a number of reasons. Our growing population and the attraction of young families is a benefit for our local economy and
part of their evaluation of infrastructure includes recreation facilities. The benefits of sporting events such as the Touch Football carnival are unquestionable. Sporting groups such as netball finally have a home. Soccer teams say the surface is a joy to play on. But, if the Minister believes that the current facilities are enough to attract national or even world-class athletes to use, we are not looking ahead with an Olympic Games only ten years away. Children and teenagers will
f
be identified in the coming years as future talent for these games yet we provide facilities that can be so much more. The foundations have been laid, let’s not leave the facilities as is for too much longer while Bundaberg is progressing their sports offering so much more.

LETTERSTOTHEEDITOR Golf Day. I wasn’t particularly aware of the work done by Fraser Coast Mates or its origins here in Hervey Bay, but the day was absolutely sensational. It was such a large crowd of people, all participating in great natured community spirit. My hats off to the organisers behind this event and to Fraser Coast Mates as an organisation. Bringing people together to talk about mental health is so important to the fabric of society. Thank you Fraser Coast Mates.

Budget bashing unwarranted
I have been amazed at the level of social media commentary attacking the Council around its recent announcement of rate increases for the new financial year. Inflation is running at close to 6% and surely we cannot think that Council can continue to deliver the same services and better, for less money. The increase in rates is well below the inflation rate. This is all happening at the same time that house prices
have increased upwards of 20% over the last twelve months. All of us are balancing a household budget and we know how much more things are costing, just to get the same thing. Hervey Bay is seen as a boom town and if we want that to continue, we should be getting right behind our leaders, rather than banging on about it behind a keyboard.

Excellent service deserves a shout out
We recently purchased a new vehicle from Wide Bay Motor Group. Like many other people waiting for a new car, it was many months from when we first placed the order. The sales consultant was brilliant and kept us informed the entire time and when it came time to pick it up, he made sure that we were given a really thorough hand over. I know it is very easy for people to complain when the level of service they receive is below their expectations and all too often, great service goes unnoticed. Well done to the team at Wide Bay Motor Group. I will
f certainly be recommending to all of my friends.

Changes to building required There has been so much talk in the media about climate change and the price of electricity. Fuel is at an all-time high and it seems very easy to blame everything that is happening overseas. Why doesn’t government look to make some fundamental reform in terms of building approvals across the country? Imagine where we may be able to take things, if every home or commercial building application must include mandatory solar power that feeds back into a battery storage facility. Yes this will cost more in the short term for the owner, but in the overall scheme of things it will just be a small increase in the mortgage amount. Until we start looking at real change in terms of creating our own self performing power, the problem is only going to get bigger.

From 18 July over a few weeks, there will be changes to garbage and recycling routes across the Fraser Coast to improve efficiency with fewer truck movements on our roads which helps cut greenhouse gasses. The kerbside collections for about a third of residents will change as rubbish and recycling collection routes are
adjusted to keep pace with housing growth. “Council’s waste collection contractor, Cleanaway, has reviewed its routes and schedules to ensure our growing community continues to receive a reliable and efficient service,” Cr Zane O’Keefe said. Residents affected have been notified by direct mail or email and a reminder tag
placed on their bin. There will be a two-week transition period where bins will be collected on the new day as well as the old day just to make sure no one is missed. Humpback Highway opens to traffic
THE FIRST of more than 40,000 humpback whales are arriving in the Bay on an annual 5,000-kilometre Humpback Highway road trip. Hervey Bay’s official whale watching season was opened last week by Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe. “We’re giving the Humpback Highway a priority green light for the 2022 whale watching season,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “Frolicking humpbacks are an awe-inspiring part of the great Queensland lifestyle our visitors love. “With humpback numbers growing by 10 per cent, local whale tourism operators say this season is shaping up as one of the biggest. “It’s terrific to hear some operators are taking bookings from overseas in a sign of growing international traveler confidence. “The Palaszczuk Government is already stoking pentup overseas demand for Queensland holidays with tourism marketing on four continents world-wide. “More domestic and international visitors are seeking out unique ecotourism experiences and whale watching is on just about every bucket list.”
Photo credit: Tourism and Events Queensland Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said almost a third of all visitors to Hervey Bay went humpback whale watching. “Every year, 25,000 Hervey Bay visitors have a whale-ofa-time on a whale watching adventure,” Mr Tantari said. “Whale watching supports local jobs, accommodation and transport providers, cafes, restaurants, hotels and other world-class tourism experiences. “We’re one of the best places in the world to see humpbacks perform and one of the planet’s first Whale Heritage Sites.” Fraser Coast Tourism and Events CEO Officer Martin Simons said Australia’s first commercial whale watching boat tours started in 1987 at Hervey Bay.
“This region was instrumental in setting up a sustainable code for whalehuman interactions, since copied around the world,” Mr Simons said “Whale watching experiences in Hervey Bay are different from all others because whales come into the warm, shallow waters of the Bay to rest on their journey from the Antarctic to the northern tropics. “It’s the largest mammal migration in the world. “Here the whales are relaxed, and the mothers take time to train their calves, sometimes pushing them right up to boats. “The whales are as interested in the boats as visitors are in them.” Prime whale watching season is from July to October.

New home for the Police
Minister for Police Mark Ryan and Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari with Hervey Bay police officers PLANNING for the new Hervey Bay Police station will begin this financial year with a record $3 billion police budget. “Included was $100,000 in the police budget for planning for a new $14 million facility,’’ Minister for Police Mark Ryan said while in Hervey Bay for the announcement. Mr Ryan said the budget includes a further commitment to delivering 2025 extra police personnel in Quneensland over five years and a major investment of new and upgraded infrastructure and high-tech equipment to support our world-class police. The Minister was joined by the Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari and Police Assistant Commissioner Brian Connors. Mr Tantari said a new police station was a big win for the Hervey Bay electorate.
“Since being elected 20 months ago, I have been pushing for this new station and it is great to get the ball rolling,’’ Mr Tantari said. “This is about community safety, building infrastructure, ensuring better services and securing good jobs for our future.’’ North Coast Region Assistant Commissioner Brian Connors said the replacement station would help meet the growing demand for policing services across the region. “The Wide Bay region continues to grow in population and demand for policing services continues to rise,” Assistant Commissioner Connors said. “With a growing police workforce, it is important that we have suitable accommodation facilities to carry out their duties, servicing
the local community. “The replacement facility will significantly enhance policing operations in Hervey Bay.” Queensland Police Union President Ian Leavers said it was appropriate for police to have modern facilities and equipment. “Police Stations like Hervey Bay are a real hub for the community and we know locals take great pride in knowing the police who work around the clock providing assistance to them have a workplace that suits their needs, is secure for both officers and people visiting the station. "Hervey Bay is a growing community and the investment from the government in redeveloping the police station will ensure police are working in a fit-for-purpose facility that has the ability to cater for future growth.”

Innovative breast cancer treatment in Hervey Bay
BREAST cancer patients in Wide Bay and regional Queensland are benefiting from innovative and advanced cancer care technology and clinical research closer to home. Dr Emilia Dauway, a surgical oncologist specialising in breasts and oncoplastic surgery, offers a groundbreaking procedure at Hervey Bay Hospital. The first surgeon to introduce the technique in Australia, Dr Dauway uses Magseed localisation instead of traditional hookwires when performing breast surgery. Dr Dauway said the Magseed marker was a game changer in terms of providing patients access to a more accurate and less invasive method of removing impalpable breast lesions. “The Magseed marker is a tiny stainless-steel seed, the size of a rice grain, that is implanted in a patient’s lesion to precisely mark the breast cancer for surgical removal,” Dr Dauway said. “It can be inserted into the lesion up to 30 days prior to surgery and allows the patient to go straight into the theatre on the day of surgery, minimising delays and enhancing the patient experience. “Traditionally, a hookwire has been implanted by a radiologist to help guide a surgeon to the lesion, which increases the number of procedures on the day of surgery and the patient’s time in hospital. “Using a Magseed marker offers a simple and more precise solution that can be inserted weeks in advance of surgery and can often be completed in a matter of minutes. “It also uncouples the risk of additional procedures on the day of surgery affecting
Dr Emilia Dauway brings groundbreaking cancer care technology to Hervey Bay scheduling, which can understandably cause some patients to feel higher levels of anxiety.” Dr Dauway said Magseed surgery resulted in significantly less likelihood of a mastectomy, preserving as much breast tissue as possible, and had the same survival rate as complete breast removal. “I use a handheld magnetic sensing probe that makes a beeping noise when it gets near the seed, allowing for a more targeted approach and helping to facilitate breast preservation,” she said. “The survival rate is the same for lump removal followed by radiation as breast removal. “If we reduce the number of mastectomies, we can also reduce the number of reconstructions.” Dr Dauway, described by her peers as a pioneer in oncoplastic surgery, has also contributed extensive research to peer reviewed scientific journals, and continues to do so in Hervey Bay. She was recently invited to present at the prestigious Royal Australasian College of Surgeons’ Annual Scientific Congress on ‘providing tertiary care in the regions’ during the breast cancer scientific session. “The innovative breast cancer surgery and technology that we are performing in Wide Bay is unique, and we have more
cases and experience than tertiary centres in other states,” she said. “And the great work we are doing in this space doesn’t happen without a great team. “Our nurses have had the opportunity to learn a new method and are excited by the work, and they take pride in the difference they are making in helping women with breast cancer.” Dr Dauway said women did not have control over having a diagnosis of breast cancer, but she strongly believed they could choose how they prefer to respond to that diagnosis and treatment. “That’s why I have a strong focus on educating and empowering women to make informed health treatment decisions and providing access to cutting-edge treatment options in regional areas,” she said. “As a trained yoga and mindfulness instructor, I also believe in not only removing cancer but restoring the entire patient physically and mentally.” Dr Dauway was also awarded ‘Inspirational Woman of the Year’ in 2019 by the Regional Queensland Women’s Association for holistic approach to surgery and the work she’s doing with regional women through her non-profit organisation, Restore More.
Do you feel your rights are being respected? Are your family members supportive, or do they create stress in your life? customised HARVEY – an AIpowered, talking HR-V – as the ultimate road trip companion in a bid to enable young people to reimagine Australia by road. Martin Simons, Chief Executive at Fraser Coast Tourism & Events said the partnership with Honda Australia and HARVEY’s tour of Hervey Bay was a great opportunity to showcase the region’s assets as a multidimensional drive destination. “We are one of Australia’s most pristine, big nature destinations with World Heritage-listed K’gari-Fraser Island, known internationally for its rugged beauty with half the world’s perched lakes and rain forest hundreds of years old growing out of the sand. “The region is also surrounded by marine parks and in 2019 was selected as the first Whale Heritage Site in the world. It is also the major jumping off point to the Southern Great Barrier Reef and boasts one of the world’s most unique military wreck dives (ex-HMAS Tobruk) just off the coast.
“Our partnership with a globally renowned brand like Honda is a massive plus for the region, which is growing as both a domestic and international tourist destination.” Belinda Cusworth, General Manager Customer Experience at Honda Australia said the launch of HARVEY and partnership with Fraser Coast Tourism was an exciting moment for them as it was an opportunity to highlight how the HR-V can support their desire for adventure and travel. “For many Australians, their car is often an extension of their personality and we wanted to bring this to life through HARVEY. “Meanwhile, as many tourism regions have been hard hit by recent events, from the pandemic to floods, we wanted to showcase how HARVEY – and the all-new HR-V – can be the ultimate travel companion with all the bells and whistle – spacious interiors, Honda SENSING safety suite, smart connectivity, and a hybrid engine.”

HONDA Australia has partnered with Fraser Coast Tourism & Events (FCTE) to showcase the very best of Hervey Bay, putting the Fraser Coast region on the list as a must-see destination for Aussie travellers with the launch of its all new Honda HR-V in Hervey Bay, aptly named Harvey. A Honda spokesperson said the partnership had come at a time when Australians were hoping to shake off their cabin fever and embark on domestic travel adventures. It is forecasted that the number of Australians heading off on domestic overnight trips will surpass 2019 levels, with 124 million and 132 million trips made by the end of 2022 and 2023, respectively. The company’s newest small SUV has been completely reimagined for 2022 with new and improved features across premium aspirational design, technology, and unequalled versatility in both petrol and self-charging hybrid variants. FOR JUSTIN Watts, it was a matter of when, not if he would strap on a firefighter’s helmet, pick up a hose, and answer the call for help from those in need. Queensland Fire and Rescue Service’s (QFRS) newest firefighter has been deployed to the Wide Bay, as a life-long dream became a reality recently when he graduated from the Queensland Combined Emergency Services Academy (QCESA) at Brisbane. “From a young age I have always had an interest in being a firefighter and I joined as an auxiliary firefighter when I was 18 years old,” Justin said. “It is one of those things I have always wanted to do in my life. The other jobs I have had were opportunities that arose, but this career is something I have wanted to do for myself. “I was an auxiliary firefighter in Charleville in my hometown from 2003 before transferring to Hervey Bay in 2014 and continuing as an auxiliary there.”
It was a family business for Justin, whose uncles also served their state as firefighters, and it was that close connection that inspired his interest in emergency services. A butcher by trade, Justin completed an electrician apprenticeship with Ergon 15 years ago, with the past eight spent working on high voltage powerlines in as a Lines Distribution Mechanic in Maryborough and Hervey Bay. If that work wasn’t high voltage enough, bubbling away in the background was Justin’s firefighting career where he learned the ins and outs of station and equipment maintenance, road accident rescues and house fires. A transition to a permanent firefighter role was inevitable. “The 16 weeks of learning at QCESA was next level, the knowledge and skills you need to be on top of is a lot more in depth, particularly the theoretical side,” Justin explained. “The training was quite intense, so it was beneficial
to have some knowledge of the role due to my auxiliary firefighting background just to stay on top of it all.” Justin’s aware as a QFRS permanent firefighter, he’ll play a crucial role in the front-line response to emergencies and disasters in the Wide Bay, but his local knowledge and previous experience will hold him in good stead. “I still get a few nerves, but I have responded to jobs before which will be helpful. I have not been exposed to all types of emergency situations, but it will be handy to get a few jobs under my belt with my new crew,” he said. “It is nice to live and work in the same area and I have been doing that with my former job. It is great to stay local and contribute to the community in this role, responding to people in need. If you are interested in a rewarding career with QFRS, head to qfes.qld.gov.au for more information.

Can’t get any fairer on regional buses How to solve TECHTALK
PUBLIC transport fares will be standardised across all regional areas in Queensland from July with the intent of delivering greater convenience to travellers with a more consistent fare structure. The Advertiser contacted Wide Bay Transit to check how the Fraser Coast would be affected. A spokesperson from Wide Bay Transit said the fares on the Fraser Coast would not be increasing and zones would stay the same as changes were made in December 2019. Locals can expect to continue seeing the familiar bus drivers. School transport fares will also be aligned with the new fare and zone structures. Translink Deputy DirectorGeneral Sally Stannard said the move would also see current qconnect bus networks become Translink-branded. Buses will start to have the Translink branding on them this year and early next year. "Operating under the Translink brand will bring a number of benefits which will be seen by customers, including access to integrated journey planning and Translink's 24/7 contact centre (13 12 30)," Ms Stannard said.
common printer problems
Wide Bay Transit Managing Director, Murray Priebbenow keeking up his bus driving skills "The journey planner, MyTranslink app, and contact centre are used extensively by SEQ customers, and I am pleased our regional customers will be able to access these tools.” Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the change followed a review of fares and zones across regional Queensland. “Right now, fares and zones differ across all regional areas and we want to introduce a more equitable zone structure across regional Queensland – similar to what is in place in South East Queensland," Mr Bailey said. "Once the consistent fare
and zone structure has been introduced to these regional areas, the progressive rollout of Smart Ticketing will be able to begin. “Right now, the Palaszczuk Government is delivering a new Smart Ticketing system across the state, which will for the first time allow Queenslanders to use their credit, debit and go card or smart device to pay for public transport. “To ensure this integrates with the current system, we’re installing new readers across our train, bus and ferry fleet state-wide.

Everybody loves good neighbours NEIGHBOURHOOD and community centres in Hervey Bay will receive a share of the State Government’s record investment in neighbourhood and community centres in the 2022-23 State Budget. Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said this funding would mean more services and support would be available for people living in Hervey Bay. “Thanks to this significant funding commitment, annual operational funding for Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre will increase by $126,780 in 2022-23,” Mr Tantari said. “This additional funding will allow the centre to hire new staff, buy equipment and deliver additional services and support for people who need it most – including those experiencing domestic and family violence, social isolation and loneliness, homelessness, and financial stress.
“For vulnerable people in our community, this support can be life-changing.” “I’m sure this news will be welcomed by the hard-working staff and volunteers at our local centre, along with the wider community.” The 2022-23 State Budget includes a total of $115.8 million over four years for neighbourhood and community centres across Queensland. This includes $51.8 million to increase the minimum operational funding for each of the 127 State Government-funded Neighbourhood centres to $230,000 per annum, up from around $124,000. Mr Tantari said the Palaszczuk Government is committed to funding high quality community services for Queenslanders such as seniors, people with disability, families, First Nations people and young people. “In the 2022-23 State Budget the Palaszczuk Government is

providing an additional $125.6 million funding over four years to increase the delivery of vital community and social services for Queenslanders in need,” he said. “Community services, such as neighbourhood and community centres, provide valuable supports to the Queenslanders who use them. “The Palaszczuk Government’s support for these services in Hervey Bay is another example of the government’s commitment to increasing the social and economic wellbeing of Queenslanders.” Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch said that neighbourhood and community centres are the cornerstones of communities. Ms Enoch said the Queensland Government was committed to helping young Queenslanders experiencing or at risk of homelessness to find safe, secure and affordable housing.

VVAA gives back Men’s Shed helps build
THE VETERANS Advice and Social Centre at Freedom Park in Pialba is in the process of transferring the responsibility of the centre from the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia (VVAA) Hervey Bay SubBranch to the Veterans of Australia Inc (VOA) resulting in several community donations through the restructuring. VVAA Hervey Bay decided at its last General Meeting to donate some funds to other like-minded organisations on the Fraser Coast. Community Flights received $500, Operation Hard Yakka received $500, and Riding for Disabled (RDA) received $250. Emma Brown, Treasurer and Secretary of Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Hervey Bay Sub-Branch said VVAA Hervey Bay chose to donate to these worthy organisations as their values aligned. “Riding for the Disabled was donated funds to assist them in their provision of support to physical and intellectually disadvantaged people through riding and supporting horses,” said Ms Brown. “Riding for the Disabled is also hoping to be able to provide support to First Responders and Veterans volunteering with the

Community Flights provide free-of-charge aircraft transport for patients and carers to non-emergency medical treatment and services. “VVAA Hervey Bay was more than happy to donate funds to help Community Flights continue their service,” said Ms Brown. Operation Hard Yakka, run by Bob Davis at Susan River Homestead, was chosen as a recipient to help continue to run its Military Style Youth
Diversion Training Program. “Representatives from VVAA Hervey Bay have attended some of the recent graduations and Bob, who is ex Army, is providing a program that not only helps the youth who are participants but has been helping Veterans who are coming on board as Trainers.” “VVAA (QLD) – Hervey Bay was pleased to be able to provide some funds to hopefully help Bob continue to run this service,” said Ms Brown. The Veterans Advice and Social Centre in Freedom Park, Pialba is open from 9am to 12.30 Monday to Friday for Veterans to drop in and socialise or receive compensation or welfare advocacy advice.
MEN’S Shed members from Gayndah, Mundubbera and Biggenden gathered at the Burrum District Community Men’s Shed recently for a day of ideas exchanging and sharing. Burrum District Community Men’s Shed president John Laffin hoped this would be the first of many meetings with other sheds in the Wide/ Bay Burnett district. “The meeting was proposed so that we could swap ideas on projects to the benefit of all, while enjoying morning tea and lunch with like-minded men,” said Mr Laffin. “The visitors were entertained with a display of our CNC Laser Engraver working thanks to the perseverance of our Vice President Vic Blizzard, and our 3D printer was demonstrated by Craig.” As a memento of the occasion the President of Gayndah Men’s Shed, Evert Klasson, was presented with a plaque replicated from their shed logo made by our Vice President Vic on our CNC machine. Following the demonstration of the 3D printer, visitors were invited to watch Peter use the pantograph to engrave a piece of timber with the name of

Mr Laffin said they highlighted the support from the Fraser Coast Regional Council to all in attendance, in particular for the funding received in the 2021-22 Community Monthly Grants Round 1. This grant money was used for increased security, additional workspace and air conditioning of the meeting room. “At the end of a very enjoyable and rewarding gathering, President Evert, of the Gayndah Men’s Shed invited our members to visit

GROWING up in regional Queensland, Jonathon Heeley was better known as the ‘Coke can kid’. When he has born 12 weeks premature at Brisbane’s Mater Mothers’ Hospital in 1992, Mr Heeley was Queensland’s smallest baby, weighing only slightly more than a can of Coke at 374g. Just turned 30 at the start of this month, the one-time Australian Guinness Book of Records titleholder for the smallest premature baby survivor, remains Mater’s smallest surviving baby. Given a five per cent chance of survival at birth, Mr Heeley remained in hospital for five months after he was born, with his mother Gail travelling from Maryborough to see him every few days. His first bath was in a kidney dish. “I feel so lucky to live every day,” Mr Heeley said. “It’s so surreal and sometimes scary to think back on how Gail Heeley with her tiny newborn in 1992 small and fragile I premature babies was. to breathe.” “I’ve had quite a Mother Gail normal experience Heeley, 66, said growing up without giving birth to any health issues. her only child I would hope to was an emotional say my birth has rollercoaster. paved the way for “On the what doctors can do Jonathon Heeley was the same size as a Coke can when he discharge paper, now to save other was born and was given a 5% survival chance I remember premature babies.” reading ‘future Mater Mothers’ unknown’,” Ms Heeley said. Celebrating whales
THIS year the family friendly, Hervey Bay Whale Festival will take place on Saturday and Sunday, 30-31 July in a new look format across the various locations in Hervey Bay. The Whale Parade and Family Day will kick off the Whale Festival on Saturday at Seafront Oval, showcasing Live entertainment, information and food stalls, market vendors and children’s entertainment. The family day commences from 11am on Saturday, wrapping up at 5pm, while the popular Whale Parade begins at 2.30pm from Frank Street. Anyone wishing to join the parade must register their interest before 25 July. Hervey Bay’s traditional Blessing of the Fleet at the Great Sandy Straits Marina to herald the start of the 2022 whale watching season will now be held as a Blessing ceremony at the annual Paddle Out for Whales event at Torquay Beach on Sunday 31 July. Harbour blessing not possible this year The Great Sandy Straits Marina operators were not able to provide the necessary approvals for the traditional Blessing of the Fleet ceremony
to go ahead in the harbour this year and because of the tight harbour docking area at other marina complexes within the harbour precinct, these areas were also unsuitable for the event. With the harbour unavailable and because of the shallowness of the Bay close to the shoreline, it was not possible to involve the whale boats in the
blessing event this year. Holding the 2022 Blessing ceremony as part of the very significant Paddle Out for Whales will keep the tradition alive while further negotiations take place in the hope that the marina is available in the future, said General Manager Martin Simons. The Blessing is a centuries old tradition believed to have originated in Mediterranean fishing communities to ensure a safe and prosperous season for all vessels.
Paddle Out for Whales will be held on Sunday 31 July, with registrations open from 8am outside Torquay Beach Sailing Club. The Blessing Ceremony will be held on Torquay Jetty at 9.30am during the Paddle Out. The event kicks off with a yoga session sponsored by the University of the Sunshine Coast in Ernie Organ Park, followed by entertainment with Jon Vea Vea, Welcome to Country and the traditional minute’s silence as representatives from the Whale Watching Fleet drop flowers into the water marking the significance of humpback whales to the Fraser Coast community. Registrations open from 8.30am with participants paddling out into the shallow, turquoise waters on their stand-up paddle boards, kayaks and floatation devices from 9.30am. The sacred Aloha Mai E chant, presented by Leandra Gurbiel, will also take place in honour of the whales and their significance to the region. Members of the whale watching fleet will join the new Blessing ceremony, while a mobile Visitor Information Centre pop up trailer will be on site to take bookings for whale watching tours.

Free program to Men walk, talk and wear bright assist businesses t-shirts to raise awareness with staffing
LOCAL businesses wanting assistance with how to recruit and keep staff are encouraged to sign up for a free Fraser Coast Regional Council program starting in August. The Business Manager Program has been developed as part of Council’s Hervey Bay Jobs Ready Program, funded by the Australian Government’s Department of Social Services. Cr Jade Wellings said Council was keen to ensure the Fraser Coast had a strong, resilient and diversified economy that supported growth and long term jobs. “The Fraser Coast has traditionally had a high number of people looking for work, yet at the same time businesses struggle to find and retain employees with the right skills,” she said. “Under the Hervey Bay Jobs Ready Program, Council is delivering a regular three-week jobs training program to upskill, build job readiness and provide intensive support to unemployed people aged 35 years and under. “We are now also offering a Business Manager Program
from 2 August, which will focus on assisting business owners and business managers. “The program will feature guest speakers sharing insights about effective staff recruitment and retention strategies and will provide opportunities to network and collaborate with other local businesses. “The program will help business owners and managers work on their business, instead of in their business.” The Business Manager Program will run from 2 August to 1 September at the Hervey Bay Jobs Ready office at 1/65 Main Street in Pialba. Limited spaces are available with the program running for four hours a day, one day a week over five weeks, with participants having the option of attending on a Tuesday or a Thursday. Two more rounds of the Business Manager Program will be held in early 2023. Kindness really does work A NEW charity has formed to help people doing it tough. Kindness Works provides breakfast, essentials, bedding and friendship to local people living rough and collaborates with other local community services such as WeCare2, Hervey Bay Headspace, Transformations Ltd, J&T Supporting Homeless and Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre to name a few. Free breakfast is offered each week where relationships with people in need are formed that then may move onto supporting and empowering those people achieve goals. Kindness Works ties together two Baptist Church initiatives established over the past 18 months, the COACH program and StreetWorks. COACH (Creating Opportunities and Casting Hope) is a family mentoring program to support families referred by chaplains and guidance officers, through challenging life situations to improve their life. A trained coach walks beside a family as they work towards a goal and can be a confidant, shoulder to cry on and cheerleader for the parent. Jo Lambden, secretary of Kindness Works said sometimes they help young mums with discipline of their children or getting them off
John Dearden, volunteer leader, handing over a swag, one of 20 the Fraser Coast Regional Council funded for StreetWorks. devices as an example. StreetWorks, supports people living rough and homeless in the Torquay foreshore area. Volunteers started offering breakfast to these people once a week. The number of attendees grew from 15 to around 30 by the end of 2021. “These are long term homeless and people living rough, so they’ve often got chronic health issues.” “Some people need new teeth, a hip replacement or help into rehab.” “Small steps such as cutting back on cigarettes or help managing to pay a mobile phone or get glasses to read may not look much to an outsider but these small wins can make a big difference in a person’s life,” said Ms Lambden. “We try to understand their strengths and what they can contribute to the community they’re a part of and empower
them.” With the growth of the community support, Ms Lambden said the next step for the group is to establish a permanent safe space in the Torquay area for people to come for breakfast and friendship for five days a week. Ms Lambden said they are focussed on the Torquay area as several older people don’t have transport. WeCare2 and J&T Supporting Homeless support people in the Scarness and Pialba areas. To help raise funds to continue providing these services, Kindness Works will hold their inaugural Celebration Fundraiser, an entertaining evening on October 7 at the Baptist Church from 6-8.30pm. New ‘Urangan Pier’ mural FCTE Visitor Services Manager, Karen Rasmussen, has been hard at work the past couple of months coordinating the newly erected visitor seating area and locally curated ‘Urangan Pier’ themed mural at the Hervey Bay Visitor Information Centre. “After seeing the success of the silo trails throughout regional Australia I saw an opportunity to develop a public art trail in Hervey Bay to encourage more visitors to the Fraser Coast. “Public artworks are a cultural expression of a community, they offer a shared vision of identity. “The silo trails of inland
Australia confirm that public art opens doors to tourism through social media and a desire to be inspired,” said Visitor Services Manager Karen Rasmussen. With a plan to create a vibrant and welcoming road frontage, the team engaged local artist Paul Petterson to develop a mural paying tribute to the iconic Urangan Pier including life above and below the waterline. The mural highlights the region’s hero experience, whale watching with a humpback whale and her calf featured prominently. “Our new mural embraces Hervey Bay’s identity and celebrates our World Whale
Heritage site status,” said Ms Rasmussen. To accompany the mural a visitor seating area has also been created to provide a welcoming place for visitors to stop and take a break, so they can plan their activities and admire the new backdrop. FCTE encourages all visitors to snap a selfie or family picture and share on social media. Hervey Bay Visitor Information Centre is located at 227 Maryborough Hervey Bay Rd, Urraween. All are welcome to come along to admire the new artwork.

NEWSINBRIEF Refurbishment Policy to stimulate business
Fraser Coast businesses have been given more help to refurbish their properties. “Under the Refurbishment Concession Policy, Council will provide rates concessions to property owners who have to close their business to undertake extensive refurbishments to heritage buildings, character buildings and other significant buildings,” Cr David Lee said. The policy endorsed will cover the wastewater charge, water access charge, waste management charge and general rates for the services not in use for the period of the business is closed said Cr Lee. “Council decided that as commercial businesses are not eligible to apply for Council’s Financial Hardship Policy, we needed a policy to encourage owners wishing to improve significant buildings in key areas to undertake the works. “The refurbishments will in turn ensure our commercial precincts are clean, tidy, vibrant and welcoming, which also creates confidence in the business sector and stimulates further investment and economic development.” Applications can be lodged with Council at any time
and will be assessed by the Refurbishment Concession Assessment Panel which can recommend concessions ranging up to 100% each for: • wastewater charge • water charge • waste management utility charge • general rates “Council is committed to encouraging owners to maintain and improve their premises so that buildings continue to attract businesses and investment and attract visitors and new residents to the region,” Cr Lee said.
Women’s recreational fishing network launched
The State Government has launched a new social media network to encourage more women to take up fishing. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said the government had launched the new Women in Recreational Fishing (WIRF) Program to develop leadership, promote knowledge sharing and showcase activities for women in fishing in Queensland. “The WIRF Program creates a ‘safe space’ for women of all ages, skill levels and cultural

backgrounds to network via a Facebook community,” Mr Furner said. “This network will encourage women to participate in recreational fishing activities, share knowledge, stories, tips, get the right equipment and promote events such as the WIRF Leadership program to develop female role models within the recreational fishing community. More information about WISA is available at www. womeninseafood.org.au.
More harmful plastics given the punt
The sunshine state is set to ban plastic microbeads, polystyrene packing peanuts and plastic-stemmed cotton buds by 1 September 2023 with the Palaszczuk Government unveiling its proposed five-year roadmap to phase out harmful, singleuse plastics. Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon said the mass release of lighter-thanair balloons will also be banned next year, while new minimum standards will be introduced for heavy plastic bags requiring them to be tested for reusability and the ability to be recycled once they’ve reached the end of
their lifespan. The five year roadmap comes off the back of new survey results, which showed 91 per cent of Queenslanders backed further bans on single-use plastics, as well as consultation with peak retail and environment groups. “Single-use plastics are problematic, and Queenslanders have made it clear they want to give more of them the punt,” the Minister said, kicking off Plastic Free July. “They don’t breakdown, they fill up our dumps and they kill wildlife. The State Government phased out single-use lightweight shopping bags in 2018 and last year banned a number of single-use plastics food products like straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, unenclosed bowls, and expanded polystyrene (EPS) takeaway containers and EPS cups. The aim is to phase out other problematic single-use plastics including disposable coffee cups and lids. “That’ll begin with getting to work straight away on replacements for coffee cups through an Innovation Challenge – with further details to be announced soon – to get Queensland businesses working on the alternatives we need.

Sea snake set free, with baby
TWO olive sea snakes have been released into the ocean off Hervey Bay following a tipoff, a live birth, an investigation and a seizure. A member of the public contacted wildlife officers and alleged a sea snake had been captured illegally from the Great Sandy Marine Park and was being kept in a tank at a business in Hervey Bay. Wildlife officer Chris Heckathorn said during the investigation, wildlife officers were surprised to discover the sea snake had given birth whilst in captivity, and both snakes were seized. “The Department of Environment and Science would like to thank the person who provided the information about the snakes,” Mr Heckathorn said. “A lot of our compliance activity is based on tip-offs from members of the public, and we get a surprising number of reports about people unlawfully capturing native wildlife without a relevant permit. “Most of these involve freshwater turtles or snakes, presumably because it is relatively easy to find turtles in public lakes, or pythons in scrub land or at residential houses. “This incident was certainly
unique as I have never dealt with the illegal possession of a sea snake in my eight years working with the department. “The fact that the snake gave birth whilst in captivity added further intrigue to our investigation, and we were able to successfully release them at the location where the adult was caught. Under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, capturing native animals from the wild without a relevant permit is prohibited. “The maximum penalty for unlawfully keeping an olive sea snake is $13,785, and wildlife officers can issue a $689 on the spot fine. “People should be aware that corals, marine plants, and all species of reptiles, birds and mammals are prohibited to be taken from Queensland’s Marine Parks. “Anyone with information about the illegal trade of native plants or animals should call 1300 130 372, and all reports are investigated.”

The Hervey Bay Hurricanes men’s team with an impressive win under their belt
Hervey Bay & Maryborough win in CQBL competition
BASKETBALL: Fraser Coast teams have started the 2022 CQBL competition with impressive wins over fancied rivals. The fifth year of the regional basketball tournament features teams from Maryborough, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg and Gympie playing off in a home and away format in men’s and women’s with a final to decide the winner. In the first round of games, Hervey Bay hosted the 2021 grand finalists, the Gympie Comets, at the Hervey Bay State High School. The young Hervey Bay women’s team was no match for the experienced Comets going down 67-54.
Hervey Bay coach Jill Stephenson was pleased with the team’s efforts in the first match. “I am so proud of their effort, and even though we were outsized by Gympie, we had the confidence to go out against them, Stephenson said. She believes the team has the skill and needs to improve its intensity. The men’s game was a win to Hervey Bay 83-48 over Gympie, with player/coach Trevor Sauvageot having high hopes for the season ahead. In Bundaberg, the Maryborough Magic defeated the Bundaberg Bulls in the men’s game 80-76 to upset the
home team. In the five years of the tournament, it is the first time that the Bundaberg team has been beaten. An inexperienced Maryborough women’s team could not match the experienced Bundaberg Bears, going down 64-37. Coach Deb Alloway believes they can only improve. “It was a promising start with good effort, and we will improve as the competition continues,” Alloway said. The tournament continues next week with Maryborough travelling to Gympie while Hervey Bay will travel to Bundaberg.
