GOFUNDME, the world’s leading fundraising platform, recently revealed Australia’s most generous towns (based on donations per capita) for 2021, in its annual Year In Giving report. Hervey Bay was named Australia’s most generous town, followed by Mackay and the NSW town of Wagga Waaga, which made the top 10 list for the third consecutive year. Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said he was thrilled Hervey Bay had been named the most generous town in Australia and was enormously proud of local residents. “Hervey Bay has long been renowned as an attractive and affordable tourist destination, but this news highlights we are also a kind and caring community,” he said. “The magnitude of this achievement cannot be underestimated, particularly when you consider Fraser Coast residents have among

the lowest average weekly household incomes in the country. So while we earn less, we give more. “With all the challenges communities have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is wonderful and inspiring to see that Hervey Bay residents have continued to dig deep to help others in need.” Regional Manager for GoFundMe Australia, Nicola Britton, said the close-knit nature of these towns means calls for support are answered quickly and generosity can spread rapidly. She said the generosity shown by millions of Australians who donated or launched fundraisers on GoFundMe in 2021 showed that the true Aussie spirit of backing those in need was stronger than ever, despite economic uncertainty. “The top two most generous towns are also some of the hardest hit areas in

Help develop the K’gari Waste Strategy

K’gari Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy workshop FRASER Coast Regional Council is developing a Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy for K'gari (Fraser Island), which aspires to protect and conserve the world-heritage and cultural values of the island, through sustainable waste practices. The Strategy will be developed in partnership with key stakeholders such as the Butchulla elders and island tourism operators to ensure a holistic and co-ordinated approach is taken. “The strategy will guide the allocation of funds and the timing of projects to improve waste management and resource recovery from the island. It’s about providing clear direction to ensure waste is managed to minimise environmental impact, and to protect the island,” Councillor David Lee said.

“The island is a major tourism and recreation hotspot and we don’t want it smothered under a layer of rubbish. “Waste services for the residents in the villages are coordinated by Council while the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service looks after services for the thousands of tourists who flock to the island each year. “The new strategy aspires to achieve a fit for purpose waste and resource recovery service that will improve on current practices and align with both Butchulla lore (what is good for the land comes first) and the Fraser Coast Waste Strategy 2019-2029.” This project received grant funding from the Australian Government under the Australian Heritage Grants Program 2020-21. A consultation group, which

includes representatives from the Butchulla people, residents, the tourism industry, groups providing services, operations, or maintenance of the island has been formed and met for the first time in December. Council is also calling for feedback from visitors and Fraser Coast residents through a survey that can be found on Council’s Engagement Hub www.frasercoast. engagementhub.com.au/kgariwaste-strategy. The survey closes on 25 January. Signs will be placed at the barge ramps to let residents and visitors know the survey is underway and to provide a quick link to the online survey. It is anticipated that the final strategy will be presented to Council for adoption in August 2022.

Airport runway project wins national award

THE HERVEY Bay Airport runway renewal has taken out the ‘Corporate Project of the Year Award – Large Regional Airport’ at the National Airport Industry Awards 2021. Australian Airport Association Chief Executive James Goodwin said the awards recognised the many and varied achievements of the sector, with 86 airports and service providers nominating in what has been an incredibly challenging year. “Despite navigating the most difficult period the sector has faced in living memory, Australian airports have taken the challenges in their stride and continued to adapt and innovate,” Mr Goodwin said. The Hervey Bay Airport runway renewal project, undertaken by Fulton Hogan for the Fraser Coast Regional Council, was completed four months ahead of schedule and included an upgrade of the airport runway and replacement of the airfield lighting. “Congratulations to Fulton Hogan for the award. They put in a mammoth effort to ensure that the Hervey Bay

project went smoothly and did not cause any disruptions to airport services,” Fraser Coast Regional Council Deputy Mayor Darren Everard said. “It was the first major upgrade of the Hervey Bay Airport since the runway was lengthened to allow for the introduction of jet services in 2005. “The works were vital to ensure the airport continued to meet the national standards to service residents and visitors to the Fraser Coast. “The project provided a big boost to local businesses with up to 150 full-time and contract staff working at the airport during each shift, including local contractors, with materials and equipment also sourced from local suppliers.” Fulton Hogan built an onsite batching plant that produced 300 tonnes of asphalt an hour, which meant they could use two paving machines and crews at once. “The project, which began in July was originally scheduled to finish in March 2021 but was largely completed by early

November 2020, through the use of two crews per shift,” Cr Everard said. “Two crews laid 45,000 tonnes of asphalt for the project. The major work involved overlaying the runway pavement and rejuvenating the taxiway and aprons to both the terminal used by commercial flights and to the industrial aviation precinct. “Lighting upgrades were mainly carried out during the day while the runway upgrade occurred at night to minimise the impact on commercial passenger flights. “It’s fantastic to see Fulton Hogan recognised on the national stage with a prestigious award for the work they did to successfully deliver the Hervey Bay airport runway renewal project.” The $24m Hervey Bay Airport runway renewal project was supported by a $9.19 million grant through the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund and was identified as one of the key projects in the Hinkler Regional Deal.

Bird Man of the Boat build for WA Bay passes at 92

WILDLIFE guru Alan Peebles, aka the Bird Man of Hervey Bay passed away peacefully in Hervey Bay Hospital on 3 January. He died after a sudden and serious infection in his arm. Alan is best known for painting 103 bus shelters with beautiful native birds which were around Hervey Bay for years. The influential local also created a two-kilometre walking track with the help of his cousin Sandra through the dense bush at the Pi’ri Reserve at Booral. The Park is dedicated to him with a sign named Peebles Rest. Alan’s daughter Karen Frith remembers the many ways Alan contributed to the Hervey Bay community. “He was a communityminded person and did much to contribute to his local community.” “He used to give his time to give wildlife talks at the local

library and nursing homes in Hervey Bay.” “Alan was a handyman. He would try his hand at fixing anything.” “He loved the outdoors, wildlife and birdwatching. He was an avid AFL footy fan and loved his team Essendon.” She explained how he was a determined and strong survivor, “He survived tuberculosis as a child and he survived a fatal shark attack when the swimmer next to him was taken and died on the Gold Coast in 1957.” The self-taught painter and writer painted the bus shelters in Hervey Bay and contributed to the local newspapers. “And loved to dance at the Hervey Bay Boat Club!” “He will be missed,” said Ms Frith. A memorial service will be held in Alan’s memory at Peebles Rest at a date to be confirmed.

BtB Marine was selected to supply a beautiful pair of identical twins – two eight metre jet boats destined for workboat duties in the Western Australia ports. BtB Marine General Manager Chris Hough proudly explained, “These workboats are powered by turbo charged Yanmar diesel engines coupled to Hamilton jet propulsion units. The Yanmar and jet combination has delivered a 30 knot top speed fully loaded (33knots lightship), and they easily do a cruising speed of 21knots at around 2,500rpm”. Designed by Naval Architects Australia, the 800LB’s almost looked too good to be called workboats on their rollout from the BtB Marine workshop, but their finish inside and out is still both simple and practical. “With a three-stick manual control system, (throttle, gear and bucket controls), manoeuvrability of these is about the best of any I’ve built,” Chris says. “Once you get used to it, they are superresponsive – they are as good, if not better, than any other setup you can power this kind

of boat with, in my opinion.” “BtB Marine has always come from a philosophy of looking at innovative ways to build and operate ecologically sustainable vessels,” said Chris. “Safety, reliability and practicality are paramount issues for vessels in remote locations. Our vessels have been performing remarkably for many years in many locations around Australia and right throughout the Pacific Island Nations”. The Australian Marine industry recognised btB Marine’s innovation skills and boat building capability in 2020. The company won two major national marine industry awards; “The Australian Marine Industry Award for Innovation” and the AusMarine award for the “Best Multi-Purpose Workboat”. BtB Marine built the twin line handling boats in Hervey Bay for Jetwave Marine in Western Australia, where their port support duties will include line handling and dive operations in Fremantle and Port Headland.

That sounds like a summer to me Summer is the quintessential season for picnics by the beach and cricket in the park, family gatherings at the playground, sausages on the barbeque and a beer or two in the esky. To most this may seem like a right of passage, a tradition, an inherent part of our weekend routine in the summer months – picnic lunch at the beach or along the esplanade with good friends and a bottle of champagne. However, what many people are not aware is that drinking alcohol in any public place – including designated barbeque areas - is illegal, unless it is a designated ‘wet area’. A ‘wet area’ is defined as an area that is ‘identified by local council to allow the consumption of alcohol in a public place, normally for a particular occasion’ – such as New Year’s Eve Fireworks and Food n Groove. The Council may designate an ongoing wet area (for example a park with barbeque facilities), but to do so, it has

to advertise the decision in a local newspaper and erect signs to identify the park and specify the area, days and times for liquor consumption. After conducting some enquiries, it is unlikely that there are any designated wet areas in Hervey Bay. This means that if you would like to have a few beers and a barbeque at the public facilities, you cannot. Maybe it is time to debate whether we should have some ongoing wet areas in places like parks with barbeque facilities? There are obviously still laws around conduct in public following the consumption of alcohol (see section 10 of the Summary Offences Act - a person must not be drunk in a public place) that would continue to serve to control behaviours in relation to public drinking. SCHOLARSHIP incentives of up to $60,000 are set to bring new students to Fraser Coast and Gympie to study at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s regional campuses this year. Applications are open for Destination Australia Scholarships, with successful students receiving up to $15,000 each year, for up to four years, to complete USC degrees in Nursing Science, Primary Education and Social Work, or a PhD in the field of environmental or marine science. USC has again been successful in securing scholarships through the latest round of the Federal Government initiative, designed to attract and support students to study in regional locations. USC Pro-Vice Chancellor (Engagement) Professor Joanne Scott said the scholarships provided generous financial support for those who might not otherwise

take up higher education without help with study and relocation costs. “We’ve already witnessed the difference this program has made to more than 30 students who started undergraduate degrees and PhDs at USC Fraser Coast and Gympie over the past few years, with the help of a Destination Australia scholarship,” she said. Professor Scott said three PhD candidates who received first-round scholarships were now engaged in exciting local research with global impact, providing new insights into whales, turtles, sharks and endangered sawfish. “We are pleased to be able to offer another further Higher Degree by Research scholarship this year to continue to expand USC’s research capacity in marine ecology at Fraser Coast, which is directly aligned with the region’s priorities.” At USC Fraser Coast, scholarships are also available to full-time students enrolling

in a three-year Bachelor of Education or Nursing Science, or a four-year Social Work degree. At Gympie, new students studying full-time in Nursing Science are eligible to apply. Professor Scott said successful applicants would have the opportunity to benefit from high-quality teaching, learning and research opportunities, while experiencing the wonderful lifestyles the two regions offered. “The Destination Australia initiative also adds to our regional communities by bringing new people to the area, who can go on to contribute their skills, knowledge and research to help meet local needs.” Funds from the scholarship can be used to help with relocation costs, rent and household bills, groceries, textbooks and other study needs. WELL-KNOWN local businessman Shane Bradbury would often go for a walk in his lunch break with a few friends, just to get out of the office and breath the fresh air. If someone wasn’t able to show up though, the reason to not go became all too easy. “Life is busy and things get in the way, but I really enjoyed the walk and didn’t want to go on my own. “Facebook or Google must have heard me because it wasn’t too long before a post about The Man Walk came across my feed,” Shane said. The Man Walk provides an opportunity for men to get together to walk, talk and support each other in a regular and healthy way. With its roots in Kiama, a coastal town in NSW, the walk provides an environment that is positive, supportive and inclusive, with no pressure and no barriers to entry; just an opportunity to walk, talk and support.

“When I found the Man Walk, I thought it was exactly what I needed and I bet a heap of other blokes would love it too. “I found out through my enquiries that there are over 80 different walks across Australia. I was fairly insistent in my approach to them, and they decided to appoint me as the Man Walk – Manbassador for Hervey Bay.” The first weekly walk here in Hervey Bay took place on 9 September with six guys taking part and concluded at the end of 2021 with a record 22 involved. “It is a structured process to make it easy for anyone to become involved.” “We walk every Thursday from 6:00am from the Hervey Bay Surf Club and head east to the jetty, and every Tuesday we walk west from the Surf Club, starting at 5:15pm. “We go for about an hour and cover around 5.5klms.” While it’s not Usain Bolt

pace, the walk is brisk to get the heart pumping as exercise is recognised as a key drive for mental health fitness. “It’s open to all ages and all fitness capabilities.” “We have had a lot of people join who are maybe past playing sport through age or injuries, and it just provides an outlet for them.” “A lot of people have seen our Man Walk shirts and found us on Facebook, which is the best way to join the group and get all the details about our walks. “We also encourage people to just rock up and start.” “We are a great bunch of blokes who enjoy a laugh and a chat; it’s not too serious, and it’s an awesome way to connect and stay accountable to a fitness and mental health plan.” Everyone is welcome to take part in the Man Walk. Get ready for Australia Day! Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club used a Council grant recently to purchase a new IRB outboard motor. FORTY-SIX volunteer organisations across the Hinkler region will receive a share of the Government’s $20 million Volunteer Grants round, to support the crucial role that they play within our community. The 2021 Volunteer Grants provide organisations with grants of $1,000 to $5,000 to help purchase equipment, training, and background screening checks for their volunteers. More than 8.7 million volunteers across the country give their time freely to support their communities. Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt recently announced $125,350 in funding for community organisations from across Hervey Bay, Burrum Heads, Bundaberg, Apple Tree Creek and Buxton. “I know the important role

volunteers play in keeping community organisations up and running, and I know the hard work of local volunteers continues to strengthen our community,” Mr Pitt said. “I’m proud of the work undertaken by community organisations in Hinkler supporting individuals and families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and recovery. “Volunteering comes in many shapes and sizes, from being a committee member, helping out at the school tuckshop, being a referee or official, or turning up to help out whenever your club or organisation needs a hand. “I want to thank all volunteers for their time and dedication and would encourage everyone to consider volunteering if you have some time to give.”

The Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club used a Council grant recently to purchase a new IRB outboard motor. “Our IRB’s (Inflatable Rescue Boat) is a diverse piece of equipment that is used for, surveillance patrols along the Hervey Bay shoreline, rapid ocean rescues, search and rescue operations and a support vessel for other organisations including VMR and Water Police,” said a spokesperson on the Surf Club’s Facebook page. “The new outboard will increase the capacity and performance of our IRB, ensuring we are capable to respond to any situation when our community requires it.” Mr Pitt congratulated all the organisations in the region which had been successful in the 2021-22 Volunteer Grants Program.

A FUN day at the Hervey Bay and District Tennis Association, in Colyton Street, Torquay is one of four 2022 Australia Day events to be sponsored by the Fraser Coast Regional Council this year. Each year many people take the opportunity of the new year to make resolutions. How are your New Year’s resolutions going? The Advertiser spoke to personal trainers Josh Hoodless from LIFT (Lifestyle Individual Fitness Training) and Ali Bennett from Allied Fitness to get their perspective on how to stay on track. Mr Hoodless said one of the ways to keep resolutions afloat is to “set realistic goals that are more long term for the whole year”. “Motivation is not key. Motivation is the thing that gets you to start something, it’s having a routine, goals and accountability that are the key to keep it going.” He suggested creating a regular routine and sticking to that such as aiming for three activities a week to keep consistency. Mr Hoodless is a firm

focusing too much on what not to do can be harmful, we are human after all and balance is necessary, he said. Ms Bennett said she noticed the regular pattern happening each year, “The first couple of weeks in January are our busiest times at Allied Fitness and then the rush quietens after that.” “I tell all clients to write down their goals on a piece of paper or in a journal; goals are about 70% more accomplishable if written down in front of you.” She also suggested working out with someone else whether it is a buddy or a personal trainer, “It gives you the extra motivation and push to keep going; you don’t want to let that person down by cancelling on them.” “It is more achievable if you can commit to working out with someone else.” When it comes to making a resolution and sticking to it, finding internal motivation may be the best way – and you don’t need to wait for January to roll around.

The Multi Award Winning Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum features 27 historical buildings housing over 12,000 exhibits from the Fraser Coast region. The exhibits include a fullyfurnished slab cottage, built in 1898; the Goodwood Railway Station; the first Dundowran Hall; the original Dundowran State School; a fully equipped blacksmith shop; cane harvesting machinery; horse drawn buggies shed; petrol driven washing machine, Maheno Shipwreck display

and Hervey Bay's original Methodist Church, built in 1901 to name a few. Mr Taylor said the not-forprofit organisation is run thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, “We are always looking for more volunteers to help keep the place going. We especially need volunteers to work in the welcome reception and we love getting ex teachers who enjoy talking to visitors about the exhibits.” He expressed the importance of preserving our local history, “This place is for the whole community to be able to look back. We don’t want these old artefacts going to the tip and forgotten about.” “We have been lucky enough to rescue several old photos, magazines and historic artefacts that would have been lost forever.” The Australia Day at the Village event runs from 9.30am to 3.00pm on 26 January. Strength and a new career focus after stroke STROKE survivor Kelli Berghofer considers herself one of the luckiest people alive and intends to ‘give back’ to those who helped her when she needed it most by dedicating her life to a career in nursing. The Hervey Bay motherof-two has just completed her final semester of Nursing Science at USC’s Fraser Coast campus, a degree she began as part of her challenging physical, mental and emotional recovery from a stroke, aged 38. “I chose nursing because if it wasn’t for the support and care that I received, I may not be here to share my story,” said Kelli, a former school administration officer who lost movement down her left-hand side following the stroke. “You never really know just how strong and resilient you are until adversity hits. It completely changed my outlook on life,” she said. “With this in mind, I found the courage to leave my permanent job to pursue my degree.” Kelli, who was recently accepted into Queensland Health’s Registered Nurse Graduate Program, said her proudest educational achievement was completing her first university degree at age 41, achieving final grades of distinction and high distinction. “I am doing something for myself in seeking a career, as

The seller brought it down from Maryborough and as he was putting it together on my front lawn my neighbours came over to introduce themselves and invite me to dinner.” Before Hervey Bay Ashleigh was the Senior Curator Visual Art and Design at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery (QVMAG) in

Launceston. She has two masters – one in Art History, and one in Museum and Curatorial Studies from the University of Adelaide, and a cat Frank she rescued as a 6-month-old kitten. Bird day special birthday 1 January 2022 was particularly special for bird watcher John Knight; it was his 90th birthday. For John, there could be no better way to celebrate his 90th birthday than by birding with 30 fellow birdwatchers. After two hours of bird spotting at Mungomery’s Vine Forest in Dundowran, John was only too happy to cut and enjoy his birthday cake and share it with the Birdwatchers. John has led the Birdwatchers of Hervey Bay for twenty-six years; with a near one hundred percent attendance at the weekly birding outings. Around 25 enthusiasts meet at different sites in Hervey Bay and Maryborough each week. John has introduced hundreds of local people to birding, an interest that can be enjoyed at any age and at any place. Kept fit and well by his bird-watching interests, John will continue to lead the birdwatchers. Online portal cutting red tape for small business

Starting a food and beverage business is now a piece of cake thanks to an online, ‘one-stop-shop’ portal that’s also helping new residential construction companies nail their regulatory requirements. Business Launchpad now covers 93 per cent of Queensland and takes a lot of the red tape and guesswork out of setting up a business. Minister for Employment and Small Business Di Farmer said the Palaszczuk Government was committed to making it easier to do business in Queensland. “That’s why the new Business Launchpad offers a one-stop shop online tool for small businesses to easily locate that required action list, instead of having to search multiple websites from a range of government agencies. “We’ve consolidated the licences, permits and other important regulatory information from all three levels of government and a prefill tool saves having to repeatedly enter the same information each time you start a new application.” Current Launchpad operators include Bundaberg, Cairns, Diamantina Shire, Fraser Coast, Gold Coast, Logan, Mackay, Moreton Bay, Noosa, Redland City, Scenic

New collar standards to identify regulated dogs To keep the community safe, regulated dogs must wear a specific type of distinctive red and yellow striped collar. Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said previously regulated dogs had to wear a distinctive collar, but the appearance was not specified and there were inconsistencies across different local government areas. “From 1 January 2022 all regulated dogs in Queensland must wear a collar that has red and yellow angled reflective stripes,” Mr Furner said. Regulated dogs include restricted breeds, declared dangerous dogs and declared menacing dogs. Restricted breeds are dog breeds that are not permitted

Some basic rules to follow include:E-scooter riders must wear an approved bicycle helmet at all times! Things that go bang; tips to help your pet cope this storm season Have La Niña’s storms got your furry friend feeling stressed? An animal expert has weighed in on how to get through those dreary days and how to tackle fireworks. Bureau of Meteorology have called it: Australia is in for a wet and stormy summer. This gloomy forecast caused by seasonal weather event, La Niña – might have you feeling bummed out about the missed beach days, but chances are your pet might also be feeling down about the stormy shift, whether it’s a little stress or downright terror. Dogs might show you they’re not coping by shaking, panting, freezing, or even running away. Fear signals can be subtler in cats, but often involve hiding until the storm passes. But it’s important not to feel

helpless with all these triggers– with a bit of patience and care, there are ways you can help them get through it. Animal ecologist Dr Joy Tripovich, a UNSW Science research fellow with an interest in animal behaviour, welfare and sensory ecology, said these panicked reactions can be completely normal. “Storms are quite loud, explosive and can happen unpredictably. For an animal, that's quite scary,” she says. Storms aren’t the only things sparking fear in our pets, though. Fireworks also involve explosive noises and flashing lights, and Dr Tripovich says they’re one of the mostreported causes of fear in our pets. But while a fear of storms and fireworks might be natural for your pet, it doesn’t have to be the norm. NEWSINBRIEF Hervey Bay U3A Program For U3A Hervey Bay, the end of 2021 meant the start of planning for Semester 1, 2022. The wide range of courses offered last year will continue along with some new offerings. The complete list is now available on the Hervey Bay University of the Third Age website - www. u3aherveybay.net/uni/courses. html The courses offered by U3A are tutored by volunteers. Some courses run throughout the year while others just run for a few weeks. Sign on day will be held at the Hervey Bay RSL on 1 February

between 10am and 12 noon. This will be an opportunity to meet the tutors, learn more about particular classes and complete membership requirements. Classes for 2022 will start back at USC in Hervey Bay on 28 February. U3A is a not for profit international organisation whose focus is life-long learning. Each chapter is an autonomous association whose members are, in the

main, retired or at least semi-retired individuals aged 50 and over. There is no university requirement or other prerequisite to enrol in any of its courses. Membership of U3A Hervey Bay is $30 per year, which entitles members to enrol in as many courses offered throughout the year as well as those provided by U3A Maryborough and U3A Howard, under a reciprocal arrangement with those groups. Information days will be held at the Stockland Shopping Centre on Thursday 20 and 27 January. Membership forms and payment is also available online.

Find a Frog in February

Find a Frog in February library talk FROGS are endearing, nonthreatening and relatively easy to observe. Many are key indicators of a healthy environment. The Find a Frog group encourages people to take an interest in this animal group by joining the team to ensure a healthy frog population. The Find a Frog in February citizen science program is now in its 6th year and has been busy building up community awareness of frogs and their needs, and helping people to monitor one or more sites every year during February. “The Mary River catchment is home to over 40 frog species; nine of these are listed as threatened or have disappeared – that’s nearly a quarter!”

said a spokesperson from the group. “Frogs are easily affected by changes in the air, water and land. Collecting information on their whereabouts and the habitats they use means we can better manage the environment to protect them into the future.” All people in the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Gympie and Fraser Coast council regions are invited to get out and about to find frogs and submit their sightings and recordings, now and especially in February. “FFF frog finders have contributed to our knowledge of 31 species from 550 locations (over 8300 records!) Every record counts – even common species like the

green tree frog as the famous ‘toilet frog’ can be affected by changing environmental conditions too.” This year the group are introducing the use of the iNaturalist phone app to submit records - join the ‘Find a Frog in February’ group and submit your photos and recordings of calling frogs. Neighbourhood Centre looks back on their impact HERVEY Bay Neighbourhood Centre’s CEO Tanya Stevenson reflected on the impact the Neighbourhood Centre had in 2021. Ms Stevenson said as year drew to a close, she was proud of what the organisation had achieved in 2021. “Annual reports may not be everyone’s favourite reading material of choice and AGMs aren’t often the first choice for a fun night out. “They are, however, an important way to reflect on what we have done and our impact on the community. “When I read our 2020-2021 Social Impact Annual Report, I don’t just see a document full of facts, figures and case

studies; I see a story of how our nearly 500 staff and volunteers have impacted the families and individuals we support.” “I see the many ways HBNC, in partnership with other service organisations, has contributed to making the communities of the Wide Bay Burnett more positive and resilient ones.” She said one of the major highlights of the year was opening of The Neighbourhood Hive – a unique new “messy” community centre, set in an expansive industrial warehouse. “Thanks to the support of Bradnams and our many local

business sponsors, we have transformed this space into something entirely new for the community. A total of 8788 trips were provided to clients over 65 through our TransComCare transport service.” “Among many achievements and exciting community events, our Community Development team helped deliver the vital Strategic Housing Issues paper, highlighting the housing crisis in our region and offering solutions.” The Wandering Teapot generated more than $100,000 in revenue, with 100% profits going to training young people at risk and supporting the selffunded, life-changing programs like youth mentoring. “We also supported three trainees to gain their hospitality certification and move into full time employment.” Community Action for Multicultural Society (CAMS), welcomed more than 800 people to Culture Caf events, introducing and celebrating the many cultures that call Hervey Bay home. Community Navigators supported 440 clients to find the help and solutions they need, while the Local

Hervey Bay Neighbourhod Centre CEO Tanya Stevenson Learning Network facilitated 60 workshops, delivered by volunteers. Our Youth Mentoring Program delivered 665 hours of support, while Play With Your Kids delivered 415 hours of play-based activities to our youngest community members. A total of 8667 hours of support was delivered to families through the Intensive Family Support program, while Bay Families contributed 1238 hours of family support. Reconnect supported 69 youth clients who were experiencing or at risk of homelessness, Skilling Queenslanders for Work helped 19 people to find jobs while Our Voice supported more than 48 young people into work. “Our legal services, Wide Bay Burnett Community Legal Service, and Seniors Legal and Support Service

(SLASS) continued to deliver free legal advice and education throughout the region.” Meanwhile, our tenancy advice service, QSTARS, provided 2772 hours of individual advice and information to clients. The Cashless Debit Card support program helped 431 people with advice and information. Meanwhile, about 10,000 people received general advice and referral through the Hervey Bay Community Centre reception. “I want to conclude by saying again how proud I am, not just of the organisation’s achievements but of every team member who has contributed to them.” “I want to offer a particular thanks to our volunteers, who give up their time to help make our community stronger.” “Here’s to achieving even more in 2022!”
