Making Hervey Bay Home is an exhibition of Sabrina Lauriston’s photography. It features the portraits and stories of 30 migrants from a variety of cultural backgrounds. The exhibition will be launched on Thursday 18 March, in time for Harmony Day on Saturday 20 March. Susan Lewis of the Diversity Matters team said Making Hervey Bay Home was about celebrating the region’s cultural diversity. Making Hervey Bay Home was conceived and curated by Diversity Matters, a small volunteer group working within the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre’s multicultural support program, CAMS. The volunteers were looking for a way to highlight in a positive and thoughtful way the diversity of the Hervey Bay community and to celebrate

through funding grants from the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), the mayor Cr George Seymour and from Cr Zane O’Keefe, of the Fraser Coast Regional Council.” The project is funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund and is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Fraser Coast Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland. The exhibition will be open to the public for two weeks, starting from Friday 19 March. Visit the community centre reception for Covid-19 registration before proceeding to the gallery area. Bookings are also open for the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre’s Harmony Day celebration on Saturday 20 March. its vibrant multicultural nature. Thirty people were invited to participate, the only criteria being that they had been born overseas and now lived in Hervey Bay. Community Action for a Multicultural Society (CAMS) is a state government initiative and funds communitybased organisations to support greater inter-cultural connectedness through practical activities such as English lessons, assistance with accessing information and services and numerous classes and clubs to promote social inclusion. A book of the exhibition is also currently in production, set to launch at the start of the exhibition. It will be available to purchase for $20 through The Wandering Teapot Café in the community centre. “It is hoped that, by experiencing this exhibition, you will celebrate with us the richness of the cultural diversity which is so much part of the Hervey Bay community,” Mrs Lewis said. “We gratefully acknowledge the assistance given us

Boobs or bust at the Brave Hen HELPING women look and feel beautiful again after or during cancer treatment is the mission of mother and daughter duo Melissa and Jade Hirning. Their new shop in Urraween, The Brave Hen, aims to help women get back on their feet by offering a range of products for women who have undergone mastectomies, cancer treatment or are looking for high quality garments and accessories. This is Hervey Bay’s first store of its kind. “I want to help ladies rebuild their confidence after their treatment,” said owner Melissa Hirning. “We try to offer the quickest and best way to get women back on their feet. She explained the need to try and remove the stigma associated with mastectomies, “My great grandmother had a mastectomy when she was in her 70s, at a time when there was no support or help. I only found out about it a few years ago. I want to let women know they don’t need to be afraid or keep it to themselves.” Ms Hirning is a trained mastectomy bra fitter with five years’ experience of fitting from her previous store on the Sunshine Coast. She decided to set up the service after moving to Hervey Bay at the end of 2020, “I noticed there weren’t any services for the ladies who have been through mastectomies, lumpectomies and reconstruction; there is no other place women can go to feel themselves again.” Ms Hirning said going through cancer treatment

and the subsequent recovery was a daunting process that she was trying to ease, “I want to make women feel relaxed and comfortable by offering a personal fitting and reassuring service.” She added, “We offer private appointments outside our business hours for people that feel uncomfortable about the process.” Ms Hirning said her business partner and daughter Jade worked parttime as a qualified aged care and disability worker, giving her compassion and understanding in women’s bodies and health. Jade recently completed her fitter training. The shop stocks an

extensive range of products, including external breast prosthesis for women who have had mastectomies and partial prosthesis for women who have had lumpectomies. There are products for women experiencing lymphedemas, such as arm sleeves and compression bras. Other products include supportive bras for breast reconstructions, pocketed swimwear to hold prosthesis, turbans, headwear, kaftans, and sleepwear. They also hold a range of accessories such as clutch bags and candles. “The products are leading in their field. We’ve got the best to offer people.”

Ms Hirning stressed, “It’s not just a store for cancer patients; it’s for all women.” “Any woman can wear our products. It’s just an extra lining in the bras that are usually made of a cooler fabric to help with sweating.” When asked about the name of the store, Ms Hirning said, “We chose the name The Brave Hen as we as women refer to ourselves as chickies or an old chook so it’s giving the word association with what we do. People don’t need to brave to come here.” “We want to help unruffle those feathers.” The Australian Government provides a reimbursement of up to $400 for each prosthesis every two years after breast cancer surgery to help with costs. The Brave Hen is located at 4/13 Medical Place Urraween, near the hospital. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9am to 3pm, Saturdays 9am to 12pm with the option of booking personal appointments out of regular hours any of those days.

‘Road Hog’ captain Chris Ferrier in 2020 Dunga Derby BIGGER and better seems to be the way as the 2021 Dunga Derby season gets started. “Wow! What an amazing start to 2021 for Dunga Derby,” said Dunga Derby Event Coordinator Andrew Coppens. “We officially opened registrations on the 23 January 2021 for the Fraser Coast and sold all available spaces in 13 minutes!” Mr Coppens said all 55 relay positions are filled, and 12 sponsors have already signed up. “The feeling of excitement was electric at our ‘Welcome Night’ held on the 19 February

with new and previous teams. We unveiled our new ‘Road Hog,’ a 1999 Holden Statesman. All attending were very impressed with the design that paid homage to the previous Road Hog.” Chris Ferrier from All Pool Servicing, who captains the Road Hog, became a Rally Partner by donating $5,000 towards the new Road Hog vehicle costs while the crew from Team Childers donated $500. Fundraising events have been coming in thick and fast, and there are varied events. “We had a successful ‘Dunga

Dash’, and our weekly ‘Meat Tray’ raffles have just started again, which raised over $14,000 last year for Rally for a Cause,” said Mr Coppens. Fundraising events planned have something for everyone with a cocktail party, trivia night, professional development course for nurses, barefoot bowls, and everything in between. The ‘Greased Monkeys’ organised a ‘Dunga in Day’ fundraiser last weekend, “The sold out event was a great way to experience a small taste of what Dunga is all about.” “The ‘Greased Monkeys’

Virtus Global Games is the pinnacle event for athletes with an intellectual impairment to compete in elite sports. It is specifically designed to be conducted every four years, in the preceding year to the Paralympics. Ethan will compete at State Championships in April.

DEDICATION, hard work and a great athlete and coach relationship have led to breaking and holding national athletic records for Hervey Bay young achiever Ethan Parry. He may have the physical and intellectual impairment of Down Syndrome, but it has not stopped 16 year old Ethan from giving his best and going from strength to strength in his sporting class. Ethan broke the Australian national record for his class (T21) in long jump, in the recent Gary Brown Shield in Brisbane, recording a distance of 3.62m, smashing the previous record of 3.52m. Coach Stix McGavin said

it was an awesome feeling to see the work they had put in behind the scenes pay off. Facebook affects What's On WHAT’S not down, publications in print! Like millions of other Australians, small business owner Kim Parnell of What’s On Fraser Coast, the region’s premier events listings source, was shocked to discover no news content on Facebook recently. She said she went on to the What’s On Fraser Coast Facebook page early in the morning to check overnight messages and saw the words ‘No posts yet!’, coinciding with the morning news on tv stating Australian publishers were no longer being shown on Facebook. A lot of small businesses who rely on Facebook to communicate with a wide audience found their pages wiped with no warning as Facebook reacted to the Government’s proposed Media Bargaining Code. “I was one of the lucky ones; for some reason my other pages What’s On Hervey Bay and What’s On Maryborough QLD were not affected, even though one of them was set up in the same way, as a media/news business.” Frustration was the main feeling Ms Parnell experienced as she tried to work out how to deal with the situation. “It takes years to build a business and a reputation. I pride myself on delivering what I promise. But COVID and then the Facebook shutdown have shown me that things can happen that are out of your

control, you just have to dig those heels in and face every challenge head on!” Ms Parnell said she contacted Sam Gould from Gould Social Media to assist her through the debacle, “I didn’t have to do anything else as Sam lodged an enquiry and a request to get my page, What’s On Fraser Coast, reinstated. Then it was just a waiting game.” Ms Gould said she spent countless hours communicating with Facebook to assist several businesses have their pages reinstated after being mistakenly taken down. She received the following message from Facebook in her early communications (which they also publicised in 2020 when the new laws were first proposed), “Australia is drafting a new regulation that misunderstands the dynamics of the internet and will do damage to the very news organisations the government is trying to protect.” This message highlighted the complex nature of the issue. Ms Parnell said she realised how much she relied on Facebook for her business through the hurdle, “I use Facebook to promote local events, I offer this as a free service to the community, a few posts are ‘paid posts’, but not many.” “As you can imagine this takes many hours to compile as the events also go on our webpage.” “It was frustrating for me but I was able to divert all events

Local author Tony Matthews launches his new book on the forgotton heroes of the war THEY wanted neither fame nor glory. They were men and women, many of them civilians, whose compassion for others manifested itself in many hidden ways. Not one of them believed that they would one day have to choose between saving others’ lives or saving their own. In his well-researched new book, Quiet Courage, Forgotten Heroes of World War Two, Hervey Bay author Tony Matthews describes some of the most compelling stories of heroism of the war. Quiet Courage tells the individual stories of astonishing acts of courage and self-sacrifice, which have now largely been lost to history. “I became interested in researching and writing a book like this after discovering a small, very tattered book titled: The Daily Telegraph History of the War which had been published in 1943”, Mr Matthews said. “This book, which I purchased for forty cents at an op-shop, gave a few brief details, taken directly from news headlines of that period, which described some of the heroic actions of just ordinary people who had, at that time, recently carried out astonishing feats of bravery.”

Mr Matthews said many of these people might have only been acknowledged briefly at the time, “I believed that they deserved better than that and decided to research their stories in full and to give them the recognition which is richly due to them.” Mr Matthews’ new book includes stories of some of the most spontaneously courageous men and women of the Second World War. They came from all walks of life – farmers, businessmen, teachers, nurses or farmhands. One chapter describes the story of Margaret Anderson and Vera Torney, two young Australian nurses who found themselves on the deck of the ship Empire Star as waves of Japanese aircraft bombed the vessel and sprayed the decks with machine-gun fire. At this very moment, both nurses, displaying unbelievable gallantry, used their bodies to protect the patients under their care. The decks of the ship were being shredded with bullets, but these two nurses completely ignored the danger to themselves so that they could protect those most in need. A chapter with the unusual title of: Look Up at Sparrowfart tells the incredible

story of an Australian, Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Anderson, V.C., and his men. It describes the heroic withdrawal to the small Malayan village of Parit Sulong, one of the most poignant and courageous actions of any war. Another chapter tells James Ward’s story, the New Zealand pilot who diced with death by walking out onto the wing of his burning bomber at 13,000 feet in a desperate attempt to save his aircraft and his crew. “When we look at acts of great courage, we should ask ourselves how would we have reacted in the same circumstances,” Mr Matthews said. “If we think and hope that we might have acted courageously, then we automatically set a bar for ourselves for which we should reach when we actually find ourselves in that difficult and dangerous situation.” Quiet Courage – Forgotten Heroes of World War Two is a book about thoughtfulness, intelligent actions and an enviable bravery capacity. Business owner Craig Singleton is very proud of the achievement, “It’s been a long journey and the business is now bigger than ever!” The long history started with two couples; Trevor and Diane Manual, and Malcolm and Kerry Austin. It was located on Old Maryborough Road where Hervey Bay Glass Glazing and Screens are now. “Trevor manufactured the fibre-glass eskies, some of which are still hired out! They don’t make ‘em like that anymore!” Said Mr Singleton. After two years, Trevor and Diane sold the business to George and Noelene Prior who moved the business to its current location at 8 Boat Harbour Drive, after purchasing the premises. “It’s been here ever since and has certainly seen some growth,” said Mr Singleton. The site sold to the current

owners 15 years ago at about the same time that the business expanded further into large event marquees, staging and lighting. In 2004, the business passed on to Linda and Guntha who further expanded operations. In 2011 Delux sold to Dale and Cath McMillan, who also operated TFH (Temporary Fence Hire). Current business owners Craig and Alison Singleton took over in February 2017. They made the decision to stay in the area after being retrenched from accounting jobs and said they haven’t looked back. “It’s the 2nd best decision we ever made…after escaping Brisbane and moving to the area!” said Mr Singleton. Mr Singleton attributed the long running success of the business to a good attitude and a friendly outlook, “These have certainly put us in good stead over the four years we’ve been here.” Not without challenges, Mr

Singleton said they needed to adapt their business model to the changing times and obstacles such as COVID. “COVID wasn’t kind to us last year, but we used the opportunity to expand and focus on other areas of the business that were always pushed to the back shelf. In a couple of years’ time, we’ll look back on 2020 and be glad that it occurred (in a business sense!)” He said they implemented new measures such as a redesigned website and focussed on their marketing, “We'd never had the time to devote to these areas previously so having the time was sort of a blessing in disguise!” To celebrate the business milestone, the owners held a morning tea with previous owners in early March. “These days only 5% of businesses last 5 years and Delux Party Hire has certainly broken this record with many more years ahead of it!”

A NEW interpretation centre was launched last week on K’gari (Fraser Island), to enhance environmental awareness and conservation efforts on the world’s largest sand island. The K’gari World Heritage Discovery Centre, located at Kingfisher Bay Resort, is a joint initiative of USC and SeaLink Fraser Island in partnership with the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation and is supported by Fraser Coast Regional Council. SeaLink Fraser Island Group General Manager David Hay said it was a collective cultural endorsement for the destination, acknowledging support from the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation and Fraser Coast Council. “We took it upon ourselves to develop this centre, ensuring visitors could have a greater understanding of Fraser Island’s profound environmental significance, and in turn, encouraging those to champion its preservation”, Mr Hay said. “We have a long-standing relationship with USC, as the majority of our Resort Rangers are graduates of the university; therefore, this project presents opportunities for further research”, he added. island’s World Heritage listing back in 1992. Visitors can learn about the vegetation, such as rainforests growing from sand and pristine freshwater lakes, paired with the unique wildlife that inhabit this diverse landscape. The Centre also features imagery of the landscape from the island’s resident photographer and tour guide, Peter Meyer, who has lived through many changes over a couple of decades. Following a challenging year for the island destination, the

launch marked Phase One of the Discovery Centre's exciting completion, with an additional four-step expansion planned. Mr Hay said the team are actively seeking funding to further develop the facility, with features including a range of interactive and immersive digital displays. Not only will the Discovery Centre provide high quality interpretation for guests, but it will also offer an educational resource and versatile space for visiting schools or leisure groups.

First anniversary highs RESIDENTS at Roshana Parklands Aged Care were delighted to celebrate the first anniversary of ownership by Roshana Care Group last week. Celebrations included live music, delicious food and drinks, and a display of vintage cars. Roshana Business Manager Sam Jayatilake said it was a great feeling to reach this milestone, “Roshana is a whole family, and we all feel great about the achievement.” It was a double celebration for resident Edith Mattherson as she celebrated turning 100! Christine Jones, a resident living in a villa, with her mother in the attached nursing home said, “I feel Roshana are really focussed on caring for everyone here in this complex; they’ve got a lovely attitude and want us all to be a family.” It has been a year of changes for the company that took over the facility last year at the pandemic's height from previous owners Torbay Lifestyles & Care Group. “It’s been a challenging year with the pandemic. All of our residents are vulnerable so Parklands staff had to put in their heart and soul to protect them from the pandemic, and they’ve been very successful in doing that,” said Mr Jayatilake. “Overall, it has been a great year. There have been many difficulties, but we have overcome them.”

opening,” said Mr Jayatilake. The new café created a focal point for the residents and their families to gather socially and build a sense of belonging. Facility Manager Deserae McGill described the highlights since she started, “In the eight months I have been here we have grown as a team.” “Not only have we increased our occupancy, all of the village

is now full, and the nursing home facility is about 85-90% full, and we have constant enquiries.” “We’ve opened things that were not here previously, such as an onsite laundry; a chef that cooks beautiful meals every day; we’ve opened the café; we have a small chapel, and we’re slowly developing all those nice things that make it a home.” She added, “We’re very soon to open our dementia wing with a small eight bed unit that will be very homelike.” There are also plans to add a bus service for the convenience of the residents said Mr Jayatilake. Ms McGill said,“We’re super proud as we have just been through our three year accreditation, passing the new aged care standards; a great accomplishment for our team.” Resident John Ashdown said, “In the last four months, there have been considerable changes for the betterment of all the residents and people like me who have hypertension.” The Roshana Care Group has been providing the services of Aged Care, Mental Health Care, Retirement Living and Independent Living since 2001 in Western Australia and more recently in Queensland. Up and away, new flights to the Bay! NEW Jetstar flights are scheduled to touch down from May 26 for a whale-of-a-time in Hervey Bay. Member for Hervey Bay Adrian Tantari said Jetstar would fly into Hervey Bay three-times a week direct from Sydney. “To have a direct airlink with Australia’s biggest city is fantastic news for Hervey Bay tourism,” Mr Tantari said. “Jetstar’s direct flights are perfectly timed with Hervey Bay’s whale watching season. “This is a massive bonus for our regional city; for our tourism, for our small business owners and for the Hervey Bay community, at a time when it is most needed.” “This outcome is estimated to stimulate our local economy to the tune of around $8 million annually and create a further 67 jobs.” “Hervey Bay will be exposed to the biggest potential Australian market with an estimated 50,000 people per annum moving between the two cities.” Mr Tantari attributed the great outcome to the forward thinking Palaszczuk Labor government that has continued to keep Queensland and the Hervey Bay electorate safe and strong. Book captures youthful interpretation of the Bay ART students have helped the Fraser Coast Regional Council capture the ‘Streetscape Character of Hervey Bay’. The results of their work have been collated in a free coffee table book which is available from various outlets including Fraser Coast libraries, Hervey Bay Historical Village and Museum, and Council’s Customer Service Centres. The book came out of a Council project to identify the built character of Hervey Bay in order to evaluate levels of protection within the Fraser Coast Planning Scheme. “The character of Hervey Bay differs from other Queensland towns and is worth preserving, especially as it has shaped our sense of identity,” Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said. “The streetscapes, heritage and character areas are mapped in the Heritage and Neighbourhood Character Overlay within the planning scheme. “Certain types of development in these places are assessed to ensure they are appropriate and conserve the character or qualities of these places. “The housing styles and development of Hervey Bay are rich and varied. “While there are a few surviving examples of

Fraser Coast Regional Council resolved to consider including $1.3 million across the 2022/23 financial year for pump track facilities in the two cities at a recent meeting. Council also accepted the Pump Track Feasibility Study 2021 prepared by ROSS Planning which investigated potential sites, track layout and costings. “Council will now consider setting aside $400,000 for a facility in Maryborough, and $900,000 for an facility in Hervey Bay,” she said. “The location of the tracks will be determined after further investigation of potential sites.”

Skaters, scooter and BMX riders will be able to put their skills to the test on new pump tracks that are set to be built in Hervey Bay and Maryborough. Building the tracks has been driven by Councillor Jade Wellings. “I learnt of pump tracks recently on a 12-month lap around Australia with my family,” Councillor Wellings said. “In many of the top tourist destinations we came across a pump track, most of which seemed to be recent additions by the local councils. “My 5-year-old loved to ride his bike on them, my 3-yearold loved to ride her scooter and my 14-year-old brother loved to ride his skateboard on the track. “These facilities were extremely popular and friendly to all age groups and were a massive drawcard for the

Fraser Coast residents are being encouraged to help shape the region’s water future. Cr David Lee said Council

was seeking community input as part of the development of a new water supply security strategy aimed at ensuring the Fraser Coast has a resilient water supply into the future. “Our water supplies rely on rainfall,” he said. “Dams are monitored daily by Wide Bay Water and managed carefully to ensure there is enough water during periods of prolonged dry weather. “The strategy will reassess options available for future water supplies, and when they are required. “Council also wants to understand how residents feel about increasing water security through the use of water restrictions. “It’s about how we balance demand and costs to secure our water future, with a secure water supply essential to support industry, agriculture and population growth.” Cr Lee said a community panel had been established earlier this year and Council was now surveying the wider community via its Engagement Hub website. “I encourage everyone to jump online and take the survey,” he said. “It only takes a few minutes to complete and includes a number of questions around the frequency and duration of water restrictions and options for improving water security across the Fraser Coast. “This is your chance to help shape the Fraser Coast’s

355 reasons that Australia’s triathlon capital is Hervey Bay

Start of last weekend’s Ultra 355 triathlon event in Hervey Bay TRIATHLON: Hervey Bay once again shouted to the world that it is the triathlon capital of Australia after running the inaugural Ultra 355 triathlon event. Over 50 hard-core triathletes hit the water, roads, and the Hervey Bay region's pathways in hot and humid conditions. The three-day event included the first day of a five-kilometre swim from Scarness Park along the Hervey Bay coastline to the Urangan Jetty, followed by a 100-kilometre bike ride. On day two, the athletes competed in a 200-kilometre time trial on their bikes, completing two circuits of the day one bike leg before a

50-kilometre run on day three. Every athlete who competed was a winner. Rachel Matthews finished ahead of Carmen Atkinson and Annette Eastwood in the women's category. Richard Thompson finished ahead of Shane Kent and Nick Quinn. Course coordinator and Fraser Coast local Jeff Morris believes the event once again proved Hervey Bay is the only place to hold triathlons in Australia. "Athletes from all over Australia competed in the best location in Australia, and Fraser Coast once again showcased itself to the world,"

Morris said. The event was the first in a four-race series across the world, with races in Mexico, Uruguay, and Canada. The next race is in Cozumel, Mexico, between April 9-11. Fraser Coast residents will not have to wait long for the event to return, returning in August later this year with the same format held between 21-23rd. "We understand that events like this, while great for promoting the region, also impact the community. We will be conducting consultation with stakeholders to receive feedback on what can be improved," Morris said.

Industry forum to dissect the property boom INDUSTRY body, The Fraser Coast Property Industry Association is throwing open its doors to welcome members of the public, and non-association members, to a special Property Industry Forum on Wednesday 24 March 24. Bringing together a host of industry experts and stakeholders during what is widely reported as a charging Fraser Coast property

market, the event will pose a question: Are we in a property boom or a property crisis? FCPIA President Glen Winney said the lunchtime event was timely and important to everyone. “We are in the midst of a once-in-a-generation boom right now, in a hugely buoyant post COVID-19 environment that nobody saw coming.”

“It is vital as a region, at every level from local government down, that we are not shackled by what we had planned to do this year or next.” “The game has changed. We have to be nimble and adapt to the very positive but unforeseen circumstances we find ourselves in”. “There is always immense social impact associated with a property boom, both

positive and negative; we want to be able to ride the positive wave for as long as possible, to be the region of choice for new residents to call home.” “But we have to be cognisant about immediately pivoting for change, particularly in the areas of rental vacancies, works programs and addressing skilled labour shortages. We can make this boom last

longer if we get out in front of it now, and we can”. “One thing we do know when you have a panel of property experts, you are going to get diverse views on what the future holds and how we get there.” “Property growth is on everyone’s lips right now, and this is a fantastic opportunity for residents to gain a greater understanding of what is happening at the coalface
